Abstract
Fermentative Firmicutes species are key players in anaerobic digestion; however, their niche differentiation based on carbohydrate utilization in full-scale systems remains unclear. In this study, we investigated niche differentiation among four major Firmicutes classes using a genome-centric approach, reconstructing 39 high-quality metagenome-assembled genomes. Limnochordia and Clostridia exhibited the broadest substrate versatility, utilizing 24% and 18% of the predicted substrates, respectively. Although common substrates were shared, each class demonstrated unique substrate preferences driven by distinct functional and metabolic differences. Limnochordia and Clostridia possess unique carbohydrate-active enzyme families, such as GH177 and CBM91, which enable xylan and arabinan degradation. Bacilli were abundant with the GH1 and GH3 families, which are critical for cellulose degradation. Overall, the Firmicutes classes showed low overlap in substrate use and functional profiles, confirming significant niche differentiation. Our results demonstrate that Firmicutes occupy distinct dietary niches supporting insights into bacterial coexistence in anaerobic digestion systems.

Abstract
Agar production is accompanied by a large amount of wastewater, which threatens the ecological environment and wastes biomass resources. The high-value utilization of biomass resources in wastewater is one of the key factors in wastewater treatment. We investigated the conversion process and antifungal mechanism of large molecule polysaccharides in wastewater into small molecule substances with antifungal activity through anaerobic fermentation. The results indicated that anaerobic fermentation of GAW achieved inhibition rates of 91.06 % and 88.94 % against Alternaria alternata and Alternaria spp. 16S rDNA sequencing and metabolomics revealed that dominant species such as Blautia, Agathobacter and Sphingomonas converted polysaccharide into phenolic acids like procyanidin C and columbidin. These substances disrupted the integrity of fungal cells, leading to their death. The preparation of composite antifungal agents using fermentation products effectively inhibited cherry tomato spoilage and toxin production. This study provided reliable technical support for the reuse of seaweed waste resources.

Abstract
A key question in anaerobic microbial ecology is how microbial communities develop over different stages of waste decomposition and whether these changes are specific to waste types. We destructively sampled over time 26 replicate bioreactors cultivated on fruit/vegetable waste (FVW) and meat waste (MW) based on pre-defined waste components and composition. To characterize community shifts, we examined 16S rRNA genes from both the leachate and solid fractions of the waste. Waste decomposition occurred faster in FVW than MW, as accumulation of ammonia in MW reactors led to inhibition of methanogenesis. We identified population succession during different stages of waste decomposition and linked specific populations to different waste types. Community analyses revealed underrepresentation of methanogens in the leachate fractions, emphasizing the importance of consistent and representative sampling when characterizing microbial communities in solid waste.

Abstract
The rising global population and rapid industrialization have frequently resulted in a significant escalation in energy requirements. Hydrogen, renowned for its eco-friendly and renewable characteristics, has garnered substantial interest as a fuel alternative to address the energy needs currently fulfilled by fossil fuels. Embracing such energy substitutes holds pivotal importance in advancing environmental sustainability, aiding in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions - the primary catalysts of global warming and climate fluctuations. This study elucidates recent trends in sewage sludge (SS)-derived hydrogen through diverse production pathways and critically evaluates the impact of varying parameters on hydrogen yield. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of the breakdown of the hydrogen generation process from SS is provided, along with an assessment of its economic dimensions. The review culminates by illuminating key obstacles in the adoption of this innovative technology, accompanied by practical recommendations to surmount these challenges. This comprehensive analysis is expected to attract considerable interest from stakeholders within the hydrogen production domain, fostering substantial engagement.

Abstract
This study deals with energy and agronomic valorisation by anaerobic co-digestion with temperature and microorganism phase separation of sewage sludge, vinasse and poultry manure, with the aim of achieving an integral waste management, obtaining bioenergy and biofertilizer that returns nutrients to the soil in a natural way. The yields obtained were 40 mL H2/gVS and 391 mLCH4/gVS. The resulting effluent showed more than 98 % removal of E. coli and Total Coliforms, as well as total removal of Salmonella. The results obtained in the phytotoxicity tests showed that all the proportions studied had phytostimulant and phytonutrient properties, with 20 % having the highest germination index (GI) with mean values of 145.30 %. Finally, the agronomic trial carried out with strawberry crops (Fragaria sp.) showed that the addition of this biosolid has fertilising properties and can be used as an agronomic amendment, with an increase of 145 % in fresh weight and 102.5 % in dry weight, and fruit production doubled with respect to the control. The ANOVA statistical study corroborated that there were significant differences in crop growth when applying different proportions of biofertilizer in the fertilizer. Therefore, these results show that this technology is promising and would contribute environmentally, socially and economically to the transfer towards a circular economy model.

Abstract
The objective of this paper is to gain insights into the synergistic advantage of anaerobic co-fermentation of heat-treated sludge (HS) with food waste (FW) and heat-treated food waste (HFW) for hydrogen production. The results showed that, compared with raw sludge (RS) mixed with FW (RS-FW), the co-substrate of HS mixed with either FW (HS-FW) or HFW (HS-HFW) effectively promoted hydrogen production, with HS-HFW promoted more than HS-FW. The maximum specific hydrogen production (MSHP) and the maximum hydrogen concentration (MHC) of HS-HFW were 40.53 mL H2/g dry weight and 57.22%, respectively, and 1.21- and 1.45-fold as high as those from HS-FW. The corresponding fermentation was ethanol type for HS-HFW and butyric acid type for HS-FW. The net energy production from RS-FW and HS-FW was both negative, but it was positive (2.57 MJ) from 40% HFW addition to HS-HFW. Anaerobic fermentation was more viable for HS-HFW.

Abstract
Garden waste, one type of lignocellulosic biomass, holds significant potential for the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) through anaerobic fermentation. However, the hydrolysis efficiency of garden waste is limited by the inherent recalcitrance, which further influences VFA production. Granular activated carbon (GAC) could promote hydrolysis and acidogenesis efficiency during anaerobic fermentation. This study developed a strategy to use GAC to enhance the anaerobic fermentation of garden waste without any complex pretreatments and extra enzymes. The results showed that GAC addition could improve VFA production, especially acetate, and reach the maximum total VFA yield of 191.55 mg/g VSadded, which increased by 27.35% compared to the control group. The highest VFA/sCOD value of 70.01% was attained in the GAC-amended group, whereas the control group only reached 49.35%, indicating a better hydrolysis and acidogenesis capacity attributed to the addition of GAC. Microbial community results revealed that GAC addition promoted the enrichment of Caproiciproducens and Clostridium, which are crucial for anaerobic VFA production. In addition, only the GAC-amended group showed the presence of Sphaerochaeta and Oscillibacter genera, which are associated with electron transfer processes. Metagenomics analysis indicated that GAC addition improved the abundance of glycoside hydrolases (GHs) and key functional enzymes related to hydrolysis and acidogenesis. Furthermore, the assessment of major genera influencing functional genes in both groups indicated that Sphaerochaeta, Clostridium, and Caproicibacter were the primary contributors to upregulated genes. These findings underscored the significance of employing GAC to enhance the anaerobic fermentation of garden waste, offering a promising approach for sustainable biomass conversion and VFA production.

Abstract
Added-value chemicals production via food waste (FWs) valorization using open-mixed cultures is an emerging approach to replace petrochemical-based compounds. Nevertheless, the effects of operational parameters on the product spectrum remain uncertain given the wide number of co-occurring species and metabolisms. In this study, the identification of 58 metagenome-assembled genomes and their investigation assessed the effect of slight pH variations on microbial dynamics and the corresponding functions when FWs were subjected to anaerobic fermentation (AF) in 1-L continuous stirred tank reactors at 25 °C. The initial pH of 6.5 promoted a microbial community involved in acetate, butyrate and ethanol production, mediated by Bifidobacterium subtile IE007 and Eubacteriaceae IE027 as main species. A slight pH decrease to 6.1 shaped microbial functions that resulted in caproate and H2 production, increasing the relevance of Eubacteriaceae IE037 role. This study elucidated the strong pH effect on product outputs when minimal variations take place in AF.

Abstract
Anaerobic co-digestion (co-AD) of sewage sludge (SS) and food waste (FW) converts municipal organic waste into renewable energy, which plays an important role in achieving carbon emissions reduction. The existing anaerobic digestion (AD) treatment projects often have problems such as low organic conversion and unstable performance. SS and FW were used as raw materials to explore the effects of thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP) and mixing ratios on the dewaterability and rheological properties of the digestate. The results showed that co-digestion of FW and SS in a ratio of 1:1 obtained the highest biogas production (255.14 mL/g VS), which was 1.53 times and 14.5 times higher than that of mono-digestion of FW and thermal hydrolysis pretreatment sewage sludge (THSS), respectively. However, the dewaterability of this ratio deteriorated sharply after co-digestion, with a decrease of 54.92%. The groups containing a higher proportion of THSS had improved dewaterability after AD. The apparent viscosity and shear stress were reduced by co-digestion compared with mono-digestion of THSS and FW, indicating a higher flow property of the co-digestion matrix. After the Herschel-Bulkley model fitting, there were linear correlations between rheological indices and soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), and digestate dewaterability.

Abstract
Disposing of the enormous amounts of food waste (FW) produced worldwide remains a great challenge, promoting worldwide research on the utilization of FW for the generation of value-added products. Gasification is a significant approach for decomposing and converting organic waste materials into biochar, bio-oil, and syngas, which could be adapted for energy (hydrogen (H2) and heat) generation and environmental (removal of pollutants and improving the soil quality) applications. Employment of FW matrices for syngas production through gasification is one of the effective methods of energy recovery. This review explains different gasification processes (catalytic and non-catalytic) used for the decomposition of unutilized food wastes and the effect of operating parameters on H2-rich syngas generation. Also, potential applications of gasification byproducts such as biochar and bio-oil for effective valorization have been discussed. Besides, the scope of simulation to optimize the gasification conditions for the effective valorization of FW is elaborated, along with the current progress and challenges in the research to identify the feasibility of gasification technology for FW. Overall, this review concludes the sustainable route for conversion of unutilized food into hydrogen-enriched syngas production.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The global market for lactic acid is witnessing growth on the back of increasing applications of lactic acid for manufacturing polylactic acid. Indeed, the lactic acid market is expected to reach 9.8 billion US dollars by 2025. The new concept of meta-fermentation has been proposed in recent years as an alternative to fermentation with pure cultures, due to multiple advantages such as lower susceptibility to contamination, no need for sterilization of culture media or lower raw material costs. However, there are still challenges to overcome to increase the conversion efficiency, decrease formation of by-products and facilitate fermentation control. In this context, the purpose of the study was to develop a robust meta-fermentation process to efficiently produce lactic acid from the OFMSW, stable at pre-industrial scale (1500 L). To maximize lactic acid production, operating conditions (pH, HRT) were modified, and a novel bioaugmentation strategy was tested. RESULTS A LAB-rich inoculum was generated with LAB isolated from the digestate and grown in the laboratory with MRS medium. After feeding this inoculum to the digester (bioaugmentation), lactic acid accumulation up to 41.5 gO2/L was achieved under optimal operating conditions. This corresponds to more than 70% of the filtered COD measured in the digestate. The amount of lactic acid produced was higher than the volatile fatty acids under all feeding strategies applied. CONCLUSIONS The operating conditions that enhanced the production of lactic acid from mixed cultures were 55ºC, 2 days HRT and pH 4.8-5.7, with pH-control once a day. The bioaugmentation strategy improved the results obtained in the prototype without applying reinoculation. Lactic acid was the main product along with other carboxylic acids. Further improvements are needed to increase purity as well as lactic acid concentration to reach economic feasibility of the whole process (digestion of OFMSW and downstream).

Abstract
As food waste gets acknowledged as a global potential source of biomass, its valorization through anaerobic digestion becomes an attractive strategy. This work describes the state-of-the-art on the valorization of food waste by anaerobic digestion and the optimization of the process. The methodology used was a bibliometric and systematic review of the optimization of the process from 66 articles selected. Bibliometric mapping allowed us to identify that, until now, most studies have been focused on the: i) anaerobic co-digestion strategy in order to stabilize the process, ii) interest in the generation of biofuels to replace non-renewable fuels, iii) study of metabolic processes for a better understanding of the system iv) reactor design optimization and others facilities to increase process efficiency. The systematic analysis showed that the operational parameters has been extensively studied to optimize the process. Therefore, co-digestion has been the main strategy to improve the process. In this sense, knowledge of the substrate and co-substrate is extremely important to operate the reactors. For methane production, the ideal operating conditions indicated were: pH of 7, solids content between 4.0 and 15%, C/N ratio of 25, hydraulic retention time from 25 to 40 days and alkalinity from 2850 to 2970.5mgCaCO3/L. In addition, the ideal OLR will vary mainly according to operating temperature, number of reactor stages, and raw material characteristics. This review indicates trends and knowledge gaps that are important to guide new research on the anaerobic digestion of food waste, pointing out the potential advantages, optimization strategies, by-products of interest and challenges of the process. The results were used for the development of references of ideal operating conditions for energy production, being able to guide the design and operation of reactors.

Abstract
Organic waste has increased as the global population and economy have grown exponentially. Food waste (FW) is posing a severe environmental issue because of mismanaged disposal techniques, which frequently result in the squandering of carbohydrate-rich feedstocks. In an advanced valorization strategy, organic material in FW can be used as a viable carbon source for microbial digestion and hence for the generation of value-added compounds. In comparison to traditional feedstocks, a modest pretreatment of the FW stream utilizing chemical, biochemical, or thermochemical techniques can extract bulk of sugars for microbial digestion. Pretreatment produces a large number of toxins and inhibitors that affect bacterial fuel and chemical conversion processes. Thus, the current review scrutinizes the FW structure, pretreatment methods (e.g., physical, chemical, physicochemical, and biological), and various strategies for detoxification before microbial fermentation into renewable chemical production. Technological and commercial challenges and future perspectives for FW integrated biorefineries have also been outlined.

Abstract
Sewage sludge represents an important resource for reuse in the wastewater treatment field. Hence, thermophilic anaerobic digestion (TAD) could be an alternative technique to recover renewable resources from sludge. In the TAD biodegradation process, volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are the intermediate products of methanogenesis. However, the higher formation and accumulation of VFAs leads to microbial stress, resulting in acidification and failure of the digester. Therefore, several batch TADs have been investigated to evaluate the VFAs production from sludge and their impact on biogas generation and biodegradation efficiency. Three types of sewage sludges, e.g., primary sludge (PS), secondary sludge (SS), and mixed sludge (MS) were used as substrates to estimate the accumulation of VFAs and yield of methane gas. The system showed the maximum total VFAs accumulation from both PS and MS as 824.68 ± 0.5 mg/L and 236.67 ± 0.5 mg/L, respectively. The dominant VFA accumulation was identified as acetic acid, the main intermediate by-product of methane production. The produced biogas from PS and MS contained 66.75 ± 0.5% and 52.29 ± 0.5% methane, respectively. The high content of methane with PS-feeding digesters was due to the higher accumulation of VFAs (i.e., 824.68 ± 0.5 mg/L) in the TAD. The study also predicted the design parameters of TAD process by fitting the lab-scale experimental data with the well-known first-order kinetic and logistic models. Such predicted design parameters are significantly important before the large-scale application of the TAD process.

Abstract
Volatile fatty acids (VFA), the secondary metabolite of microbial fermentation, are used in a wide range of industries for production of commercially valuable chemicals. In this review, the fermentative production of VFAs by both pure as well mixed microbial cultures is highlighted along with the strategies for enhancing the VFA production through innovations in existing approaches. Role of conventionally applied tools for the optimization of operational parameters such as pH, temperature, retention time, organic loading rate, and headspace pressure has been discussed. Furthermore, a comparative assessment of above strategies on VFA production has been done with alternate developments such as co-fermentation, substrate pre-treatment, and in situ removal from fermented broth. The review also highlights the applications of different bioreactor geometries in the optimum production of VFAs and how metagenomic tools could provide a detailed insight into the microbial communities and their functional attributes that could be subjected to metabolic engineering for the efficient production of VFAs.

Abstract
Biohydrogen production through dark fermentation is very attractive as a solution to help mitigate the effects of climate change, via cleaner bioenergy production. Dark fermentation is a process where organic substrates are converted into bioenergy, driven by a complex community of microorganisms of different functional guilds. Understanding of the microbiomes underpinning the fermentation of organic matter and conversion to hydrogen, and the interactions among various distinct trophic groups during the process, is critical in order to assist in the process optimisations. Research in biohydrogen production via dark fermentation is currently advancing rapidly, and various microbiology and molecular biology tools have been used to investigate the microbiomes. We reviewed here the different systems used and the production capacity, together with the diversity of the microbiomes used in the dark fermentation of industrial wastes, with a special emphasis on palm oil mill effluent (POME). The current challenges associated with biohydrogen production were also included. Then, we summarised and discussed the different molecular biology tools employed to investigate the intricacy of the microbial ecology associated with biohydrogen production. Finally, we included a section on the future outlook of how microbiome-based technologies and knowledge can be used effectively in biohydrogen production systems, in order to maximise the production output.

Abstract
Antibiotic resistance (AR) is a global problem requiring international cooperation and coordinated action. Global monitoring must rely on methods available and comparable across nations to quantify AR occurrence and identify sources and reservoirs, as well as paths of AR dissemination. Numerous analytical tools that are gaining relevance in microbiology, have the potential to be applied to AR research. This review summarizes the state of the art of AR monitoring methods, considering distinct needs, objectives and available resources. Based on the overview of distinct approaches that are used or can be adapted to monitor AR, it is discussed the potential to establish reliable and useful monitoring schemes that can be implemented in distinct contexts. This discussion places the environmental monitoring within the One-Health approach, where two types of risk, dissemination across distinct environmental compartments, and transmission to humans, must be considered. The plethora of methodological approaches to monitor AR and the variable features of the monitored sites challenge the capacity of the scientific community and policy makers to reach a common understanding. However, the dialogue between different methods and the production of action-oriented data is a priority. The review aims to warm up this discussion.

Abstract
The purpose of this work was to determine the effect of initial pH on the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and hydrogen (H2) in the dark fermentation processes of kitchen waste. The study was conducted in batch bioreactors of working volume 1 L for different initial pH in the range from 5.5 to 9.0. The dark fermentation processes were carried out for 4 days at 37°C. Initial organic load of the kitchen waste in all bioreactors amounted to 25.5 gVS/L. Buffering of pH during the fermentation process was carried out with the use of ammonia contained mainly in digested sludge. The optimal conditions for the production of VFA and H2 were achieved at the initial pH of 8. Production of VFA and H2 in these conditions was, respectively, 13.9 g/L and 72.4 mL/gVS. The main produced components of VFA were acetic and butyric acids. The production of ethanol and lactic acid was at very low levels due to the high ratio of the volatile fatty acids to total organic content of 0.86. With the optimal initial pH of 8 the yield of CO2 production was 0.30 gC/gC. High initial pH value (above 8) extended the lag phase duration in the course of H2 production. The dominant groups of micro-organisms at the most favourable initial pH of 8 for the production of VFA and H2 were Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Spirochaetes and Waste Water of Evry 1 (WWE1) at the phylum level.

Abstract
Co-anaerobic fermentation (co-AF) of swine manure (SM) and apple waste (AW) has been proved to be beneficial for lactic acid (LA) production. In order to further improve the LA production, three important parameters, namely AW in feedstock, temperature, volatile solids (VS) of feedstock, were evaluated using Box-Behnken design and response surface methodology. The quadratic regression model was developed and interactive effects was found between the three parameters. Results showed that the maximum concentration, 31.18 g LA/L (with LA yield of 0.62 g/g VS), was obtained under optimum conditions of 60.4% AW in feedstock, 34.7 ℃, and 5.0% VS. At the optimum conditions, the solubilization of organic matter was enhanced compared with mono-fermentation of SM. Microbial community structure of the reactor diverged greatly with fermentation time. Clostridium and Lactobacillus were dominant bacteria in the fermentation process, resulting in a remarkably LA accumulation.

Abstract
In this study, the influence of distinct hydraulic retention times (HRT) and organic loading rates (OLRs) on fungal dynamics during food waste anaerobic digestion in immersed membrane-based bio-reactors (iMBR) were investigated. The organic loading rate 4-8 g VS/L/d (R1) and 6-10 g VS/L/d (R2) were set in two iMBR. T1 (1d), T2 (15d) and T3 (34d) samples collected from each bioreactor were analyzed fungal community by using 18s rDNA. In R2, T2 had the most abundant Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Chytridiomycota and Mucoromycota. As for R1, T3 also had the richest Cryptomycota except above four kinds of fungi. Subsequently, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Non-Metric Multi-Dimensional Scaling (NMDS) indicated that fungal diversity was varied among the all three phases (T1, T2, and T3) and each treatment (R1 and R2). Finally, the results showed that different OLRs and HRT have significantly influenced the fungal community.

Abstract
The effects of temperature (35 °C and 55 °C) and pH (uncontrolled, 7 and 10) on volatile fatty acid (VFA) yields from anaerobic codigestion of food waste, and thermal-hydrolysed sewage sludge were investigated in this study. The results revealed that optimal conditions for VFA production occurred at 35 °C at pH 7 and at 10 and 55 °C at pH 7. The dominant bacterial genera associated with VFA production significantly differed when the temperature and pH were altered, including Prevotella, Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium Megasphaera, Clostridium XlVa, and Coprothermobacter. A temperature of 35 °C at pH 7 favoured mixed acid-type fermentation, while a temperature of 35 °C at pH 10 and 55 °C at pH 7 favoured butyric acid-type fermentation. The maximal polyhydroxyalkanoate content accounted for 54.8% of the dry cell at 35 °C with pH 7 fermentative liquids and comprised 58.9% 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) and 41.1% 3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV).

Abstract
The use of landfill gas for power production is a very attractive option in tropical sanitary landfills mainly in developing countries, where the waste composition, water content, and the climate conditions are favorable to a fast depletion of waste organic matter and a robust short term biogas production response. In this paper, the results of long-term monitoring and methane extraction activities in a tropical landfill are presented, and the obtained results are analyzed taking into account the structure of the prokaryotic communities and the fugitive emissions through the temporary covers. It is shown that waste depletion by aerobic processes and fugitive emissions are probable related to the drop in the efficiency of the extraction system verified in the field and that the performance of the temporary covers is of paramount importance when implementing good practices of waste management in sanitary landfills. The fugitive emissions through temporary covers was estimated at about 12% of the methane production in the field, and the distance from drains and sampling depth were confirmed as having an influence on the environmental conditions for waste depletion and on the relative abundance of the bacterial communities.

Abstract
Bio-based production of materials from waste streams is a pivotal aspect in a circular economy. This study aimed to investigate the influence of inoculum (three different sludge taken from anaerobic digestors), pH (5 & 10) and retention time on production of total volatile fatty acids (VFAs), VFA composition as well as the microbial community during anaerobic digestion of food waste. The highest VFA production was ∼22000 ± 1036 mg COD/L and 12927 ± 1029 mg COD/L on day 15 using the inoculum acclimated to food waste at pH 10 and pH 5, respectively. Acetic acid was the dominant VFA in the batch reactors with initial alkaline conditions, whereas both propionic and acetic acids were the dominant products in the acidic condition. Firmicutes, Chloroflexi and Bacteroidetes had the highest relative abundance in the reactors. VFA generation was positively correlated to the relative abundance of Firmicutes.

Abstract
In this study, the influence of headspace pressure (HP; 20-100 kPa) and organic loading rate (OLR; 10-30 g/L) on H2 and volatile fatty acid (VFA) yield were investigated. The experiments were carried out in the semi-continuous mode, the main products in VFAs were ethanol and butyrate, which accounted for more than 75%. More than 79% generated H2 was consumed through homoacetogenesis pathway when HP was 100 kPa, and lowing HP could effectively promote the accumulation of H2 (increased by at least 2 times). Even though consumed H2 through homoacetogenesis was related to OLR and HP, the lower HP was more likely to reduce this part H2 consumption, especially under 10 g/L condition. As for acid production rate, both OLR and HP have a significant effect (p < 0.05). Maximum acid production rate was 489.86 mg-COD/g-CODdegrade·d-1when OLR was 20 g/L and HP was 40 kPa.

Abstract
The stability of fermentative hydrogen production from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) was evaluated in this work using a strategy of effluent recycling. Three pretreatment conditions were applied on the recycled effluent: a) no heat shock treatment, b) one initial heat shock treatment (90 °C, 30 min) and c) systematic heat shock treatment at the beginning of each fermentation. When a systematic heat shock was applied, a maximal hydrogen yield of 17.2 ± 3.8 mLH2/gVS was attained. The hydrogen productivity was improved by 331% reaching a stable value of 1.51 ± 0.29 mLH2/gVS/h, after 8 cycles of effluent recycling. This strategy caused a sharp decrease of diversity with stable co-dominance of hydrogen- and lactate-producing bacteria, ie. Clostridiales and Lactobacillales, respectively. For the other conditions, a sharp decrease of the hydrogen yields was observed showing the importance of applying a heat shock treatment for optimal hydrogen production with effluent recycling.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different inoculum ratio on the dark fermentation of kitchen waste in terms of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and H2 production. The experiments were performed in batch bioreactors of effective volume 1 L without pH regulation. The ratio between the DS and KW was being increased from 0.11 to 0.51 on a volatile solids (VS) basis, while the initial content of KW was equal to 34.1 g VS/L. Increase of the DS/KW ratio from 0.11 to 0.28 resulted in the rise of VFAs and H2 production. Further increase in the amount of added DS did not cause a significant change in the production of VFAs and H2. In the bioreactor with the DS/KW ratio of 0.28, the production of VFAs and H2 was equal to 16.0 g/L and 68.1 mL/g VS, respectively. Acetic and butyric acids were produced in the largest amount and their content, for DS/KW ratio of 0.28, were equal 37% and 43%, respectively. At the ratio of DS/KW above 0.4, the caproic acid content attained the level of 25%. Based on the DS and KW microbiological analysis, it was observed that dominant bacteria were Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Spirochaetes and WWE1 at the phylum level.

Abstract
Anaerobic digestion (AD) with thermal hydrolysis pretreatment has been attracted widespread attention in recent years due to its high efficiency. However, few studies focus on systematical comparison of the downstream AD processes for thermal hydrolyzed sludge and their corresponding microbial community compositions, especially on those at pilot scale and above. Thus, this study systematically compared the long-term performance and microbial communities of two pilot-scale anaerobic reactors for thermal hydrolyzed sludge digestion under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions. The results presented that mesophilic anaerobic digestion (MAD) showed a better performance of methane production than thermophilic anaerobic digestion (TAD). The hydraulic retention time (HRT) needed to be longer than 12 days in MAD while 20 days in TAD to achieve the relatively high methane production, which could be explained by that the ammonia nitrogen accumulation especially the free ammonia determined in TAD was higher than that in MAD at all HRTs, emerging an inhibition of methane yield in TAD. High-throughput Illumina sequencing results demonstrated a more diverse microbial community in MAD than that in TAD. TAD was mediated by a suite of thermophiles, such as Coprothermobacter and Methanothermobacter, while taxa harbored in MAD mostly belonged to Bacteroidetes and relatively broad types of methanogens. In addition, hydrogenotrophic methanogens were the predominant of archaea communities in both digesters probably due to the relatively high concentration of ammonia nitrogen.

Abstract
The development of anaerobic digestion (AD) for volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production from waste activated sludge (WAS) is arrested due to low hydrolysis and acidification efficiency. This study proposed to enhance WAS reduction and VFAs accumulation during AD process via bioaugmentation of acetate-producing bacteria. Four acetogens were firstly isolated from a temperature-phased anaerobic digestion (TPAD) system. The acetate production efficiency of different isolates ranged from 15.8 to 73.7 mg acetate/g TOC, in which the bacterial strain NJUST19 was found to be the most effective strain. The results of morphological, biochemical characteristics as well as phylogenetic analysis showed that the isolate NJUST19 was Gram-positive and rod-shaped, catalase-negative, nitrate reduction-positive, methyl red-negative and capable of starch and gelatin hydrolysis, for which the name of Clostridium sp. NJUST19 was proposed. The optimal culture conditions (i.e. initial pH and temperature) were evaluated for their effects on microbe growth of selected NJUST19, and the maximum acetate production was observed at pH 9.0 and temperature of 40 °C. In the case of modified TPAD system inoculated with Clostridium sp. NJUST19, total suspended solids (TSS) removal rate and maximum VFAs accumulation increasing to 35.3% and 4200 mg/L, respectively, which was much higher than that of control (21.9% and 2894 mg/L). These results indicated that Clostridium sp. NJUST 19 is capable of enhancing digestion efficiency with a great benefit for VFAs production, offering potential prospects for bioaugmentation of WAS anaerobic digestion.

Abstract
The effects of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) on the performance of food waste anaerobic digestion and the fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were investigated in thermophilic (TR) and mesophilic (MR) reactors. Results showed that nZVI enhanced biogas production and facilitated ARGs reduction. The maximum CH4 production was 212.00 ± 4.77 ml/gVS with 5 g/L of nZVI in MR. The highest ARGs removal ratio was 86.64 ± 0.72% obtained in TR at nZVI of 2 g/L. nZVI corrosion products and their contribution on AD performance were analyzed. The abundance of tetracycline genes reduced significantly in nZVI amended digesters. Firmicutes, Chloroflexi, Proteobacteria and Spirochaetes showed significant positive correlations with various ARGs (p < 0.05) in MR and TR. Redundancy analysis indicated that microbial community was the main factor that influenced the fate of ARGs. nZVI changed microbial communities, with decreasing the abundance bacteria belonging to Firmicutes and resulting in the reduction of ARGs.

Abstract
Butyrate is an important precursor for fine chemicals and biofuels. The aim of this study is to investigate butyrate production as affected by transition metal addition of food waste fermentation including, nickel, Raney nickel and copper particles. Performance of fermentation showed nickel particles achieved the highest butyrate concentration, 7.3 g/L, which was 38.5% higher than that in the control trial. Raney nickel also showed similar effect on the enhancement of butyrate production. However, increased dosage of transition metal particle addition led to decreased butyrate production. The theoretical link between metal-assisted dark fermentation and butyrate production was tentatively explored. Redox potential affected by nickel addition was assumed to be an essential factor for butyrate production. Microbial community analysis found Clostridium sensu stricto 11 may be the dominant functional species for butyrate production. The study demonstrates that development on transition metal catalyst may contribute to waste biorefinery for added value products/energy production.

Abstract
The acidification liquid of waste activated sludge (WAS) could be used as the additional carbon source of biological nutrient removal. Recently, the optimization of operating conditions for the acidification metabolites has attracted much attention. In this study, a three-factor Box-Behnken design (BBD) was applied to determine the relative importance of the various factors and the optimum operating during acidification using response surface method (RSM). The importance of the individual variables on the production of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) was suspended solids (SS) > shaking rate > initial oxidation-reduction potential (ORP). The increase on SS content led to a decrease on the acidification degree. Low SS could promote mass exchange and microbial activity. The maximum SCOD yield (9288.5 mg/L) was predicted under the optimum condition at 8.0 g/L SS, 144.0 mV initial ORP, and 60.0 r/min shaking rate. Also, the releasing of soluble protein and carbohydrate was calculated as responses. The individual effect of shaking rate and initial ORP had significant effect on soluble protein and carbohydrate releasing, respectively. This study would provide valuable information for increasing the efficiency of acidification.

Abstract
Anaerobic co-digesters are biorefineries for energy recovery from food waste and domestic wastewater via methane production. Nonetheless, the performance of this technology was not always satisfied due to the long chain fatty acids (LCFAs) generation from food waste. Micronutrient supplementation is an effective strategy that could be applied during the anaerobic (co-)digestion to further enhance the digestion efficiency while treating food waste. In this study, supplementing copper (as CuSO4 and CuCl2) at 10, 30, and 50 mg/L Cu2+ was selected to further enhance the methane production of anaerobic co-digester while treating food waste and domestic wastewater. Overall, with the supplementation of copper, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was over 90%, while higher methane yields (0.260-0.325 L CH4/g COD removed) were obtained compared to the control without supplementation (0.175 L CH4/g COD removed). For the cumulative methane yield, the highest increment of 94.1% was obtained when 10 mg/L of Cu2+ were added. The results showed copper as a cofactor of many microbial enzymes and coenzymes involved in the methane production further improved both methane production and COD removal efficiency. Meanwhile, the microbial community analysis verified the copper supplementation significantly changed the bacterial communities but with the limited effect on the diversity of archaea. Furthermore, since the anaerobic co-digester was not that much efficient on the nutrients removal, the effluent from the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was further treated by the anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (A2O) rector and the resulting effluent reached the satisfying quality in terms of COD, total nitrogen (TN), and NH3-N removal, meeting the regional effluent discharge limits.

Abstract
This study explored the potential of acidogenic fermentation of sewage sludge (SS) in an 80 L automatized pilot scale platform. A high-rate VFA production was obtained at HRT 5 d and pH 9, with a volatile fatty acid (VFA) yield of 336 mg VFA g-1 VS and a VFA productivity of 2.15 kg VFA m-3 d-1. During co-fermentation of SS with OFMSW, a reversible pH shift from pH 9 to pH 6, evidenced a higher acidogenic activity which promoted the butyrate metabolic pathway, with 13.97 g COD L-1 of butyric acid and a VFA peak 23.2 g COD L-1. The results show the degree of flexibility of mixed culture fermentation systems, where other pH control methods other than steady control could be used to enhance the fermentation process. Ultrafiltration was a feasible technology to obtain a VFA rich permeate where 12.3-26.6 g COD L-1 could be recovered.

Anaerobic Digestion Technology for Methane Production Using Deer Manure Under Different Experimental Conditions. ENERGIES 2019. Abstract
Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an important technology for the treatment of livestock and poultry manure. The optimal experimental conditions were studied, with deer manure as a fermentation material and mushroom residue as an inoculum. At the same time, methane production was increased by adding zeolite and changing the magnetic field conditions. The results showed that a 6% solid content was the best condition for producing methane. The optimal conditions for methane production were obtained by adding 35 g of mushroom residue to 80 g of deer manure at 35 °C. The addition of organic wastewater (OW) improved methane production. The result of improving the methane production factor showed that adding zeolite during the reaction process could increase the methane production rate. When the amount of zeolite was over 8% total solids (TSes), methane production could improve, but the rate decreased. Setting a different magnetic field strength in the AD environment showed that when the distance between the magnetic field and the reactor was 50 mm and the magnetic field strength was 10–50 mT, the methane production increment and the content of methane in the mixed gases increased.
