Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the effects of Tai Chi training on depression symptoms and serum kynurenine metabolites in perimenopausal women and explore the mechanism of Tai Chi training in anti-depression. METHODS A total of 72 perimenopausal women with depression were randomly selected from Lishi District and divided into a Tai Chi training group (36 cases) and a control group (36 cases). At the same time, 36 perimenopausal healthy women were randomly selected as the normal group. The Tai Chi training group was intervened with 24 simplified Tai Chi exercises, and the depression self-rating scale was used to evaluate the depression status. The levels of tryptophan (Trp) and kynurenine (KYN) metabolites in serum were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection. RESULTS Before the experiment, compared with the normal healthy group, the depression self-rating scale scores, serum KYN and quinolinic acid (QUIN) levels, and KYN/Trp ratio of the control group and Tai Chi group were significantly increased (p < .01), and the serum kynurenic acid (KYNA) level was significantly decreased (p < .01). After the experiment, compared with the normal healthy group, the depression self-rating scale scores of the Tai Chi group were significantly decreased (p < .01), the serum KYNA content was increased (p < .01), the serum KYN and QUIN contents were significantly decreased (p < .01), and the KYN/Trp ratio was significantly decreased (p < .01). CONCLUSION Tai Chi training can significantly improve depression symptoms in perimenopausal women. The mechanism of Tai Chi training in improving depression symptoms in perimenopausal women may be achieved by regulating abnormal kynurenine metabolism.

Abstract
Sleep is a cornerstone of health, playing an integral role in both physiological and psychological functions. However, it is vulnerable to a variety of factors including menopause. According to available research, the onset of the menopause transition may not necessarily worsen sleep architecture and could even enhance it, leading to conflict between assessment of subjective and objective sleep complaints. This discrepancy highlights the complex relationship between subjective and objective sleep quality. Understanding this relationship remains challenging due to the limited number of longitudinal studies and small sample sizes. This review explores findings from both subjective and objective sleep assessments in menopausal women and examines the impact of menopausal hormone therapy on sleep quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence and severity of perimenopausal symptoms are typically associated with multiple factors, including demographic characteristics. The sociodemographic characteristics of women living in rural areas differ from those residing in urban areas, and it has been suggested that these differences could potentially influence the prevalence of symptoms experienced during perimenopause. OBJECTIVES To evaluate if perimenopausal women living in Spanish rural areas have a higher prevalence of perimenopausal symptoms and assess their influence on health-related quality of life. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 270 perimenopausal women residing in rural and urban areas. The participants completed the Cervantes Scale Short Version and Beck Depression Inventory 2. RESULTS Perimenopausal women in rural areas reported a higher incidence of perimenopausal symptoms and a lower perception of health-related quality of life compared to those in urban areas, as evidenced by higher scores on the total Cervantes Scale Short Version scale (33.2 (±16.2) vs. 26.4 (±18.1), p = .001). No differences in the Beck Depression Inventory 2 score were detected. CONCLUSIONS Perimenopausal women residing in rural areas of Spain reported a higher prevalence of perimenopausal symptoms and experienced a poorer Health-Related Quality of Life compared to those living in urban areas of Spain.

Abstract
Background The hormonal shifts and physiological changes during menopause, including perimenopause and postmenopause, significantly affect women's mental health, often causing depression and sleep disruptions. The objectives of this study are to estimate the prevalence of depression and sleep disturbances among perimenopausal and postmenopausal women and to find the associated risk factors. Materials and Methods In a community setting, 462 women aged 45-60 years were chosen from 23 clusters using probability proportional to size sampling. Sociodemographic information was collected through standardized surveys, whereas depression levels were measured with Beck's Depression Inventory-II and sleep quality with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 21. Results The prevalence of depression among the study participants was 33.3% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 29%, 37%), whereas poor sleep quality was found in 37% (95% CI: 36%, 39%). Factors such as low socioeconomic status (adjusted odds ratios [aOR] =1.64), recent negative life events (aOR =2.27), lack of social media usage (aOR =2.77), and being unmarried/widowed (aOR =2.1) were identified as independent predictors of depression. Living in urban areas (aOR =1.69), low socioeconomic status (aOR =1.96), and inadequate intake of fruits and vegetables (aOR =0.43) were identified as independent predictors for sleep disturbances. Conclusions This study highlights a notable burden of depression and sleep disruptions among menopausal women. Tackling these challenges necessitates accessible mental healthcare, educational workshops on stress management and sleep habits, nutritional guidance, and peer support networks. Incorporating these measures into health initiatives and policies holds promise for mitigating these concerns and enhancing overall well-being.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An association between the menopause and depression is widely reported. This review aims to determine the global prevalence of depression in menopausal women (this includes women in perimenopause and postmenopause). METHODS PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and PsycINFO databases were systematically searched from database inception until March 1, 2024. Studies with validated methods for assessing the prevalence of depression in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women were included. Two authors independently extracted relevant data. Random effects meta-analysis and Meta-regression analysis were performed using Stata software. RESULTS Total of 55 studies (76,817 participants) were included in the review. A random effects model was used to calculate pooled prevalence. The pooled depression prevalence in menopausal women was 35.6 % (95 % CI: 32.0-39.2 %), with 33.9 % (95 % CI: 27.8-40.0 %) in perimenopausal women, and 34.9 % (95 % CI: 30.7-39.1 %) in postmenopausal women. Subgroup analyses indicated that region, screening tool, study design, and setting moderated the prevalence of depression. Meta-regression indicated that smaller sample sizes and poorer study quality were significantly associated with a higher prevalence. LIMITATIONS There was a high degree of heterogeneity across the included studies. Only articles published in English were included. There was significant publication bias in this meta-analysis. There is insufficient information about many risk factors of menopausal depression in current meta-analysis. CONCLUSIONS Depression is common among menopausal women worldwide. To reduce the negative impact of depression on health outcomes in menopausal women, regular screening and the availability of effective prevention and treatment measures should be made available for this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the clinical and psychopathological features of affective disorders in women in the perimenopausal and early postmenopausal periods. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 90 female patients receiving inpatient psychiatric care for affective disorders, among them 41 patients were perimenopausal (group 1) and 49 were early postmenopausal (group 2). Clinical and psychopathological, psychometric (the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale - HADS, the Hamilton Depression and Anxiety Scales - HAM-D and HAM-A, the Hypomania Checklist-32 - HCL-32, the Bipolarity Index (BI), the Insomnia Severity Index - ISI, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index - PSQI) and statistical methods were used. RESULTS Symptoms of atypical (63.4%) and anxious (87.8%) depression predominated among perimenopausal patients, and melancholic depression (59.2%) prevailed in early postmenopause. Patients in group 1 had higher anxiety scores on HADS and HAM-A compared to group 2 (p=0.003 and p=0.01). At the same time, early postmenopausal women had higher depression scores on the HADS and HAM-D (p=0.001). ISI and PSQI scores in postmenopause were significantly higher than in perimenopause (p=0.001 and p=0.009). CONCLUSION The clinical features of affective disorders as well as severity and nature of the accompanying sleep disturbances vary depending on the stage of menopause, which must be considered when prescribing additional methods for examination and treatment of these disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Menopausal disorders include obscure symptomatology that greatly reduce work productivity among female workers. Quantifying the impact of menopause-related symptoms on work productivity is very difficult because no such guidelines exist to date. We aimed to develop a scale of overall health status for working women in the perimenopausal period. METHODS In September, 2021, we conducted an Internet web survey which included 3,645 female workers aged 45-56 years in perimenopausal period. We asked the participants to answer 76 items relevant to menopausal symptomatology, that were created for this study and performed exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses for the scale development. Cronbach's alpha, receiver operating characteristic analysis, and logistic regression analysis were used to verify the developed scale. RESULTS Approximately 85% participants did not have menstruation or disrupted cycles. Explanatory factor analysis using the maximum likelihood method and Promax rotation identified 21 items with a four-factor structure: psychological symptoms (8 items, α = 0.96); physiological symptoms (6 items, alpha = 0.87); sleep difficulty (4 items, alpha = 0.92); human relationship (3 items, alpha = 0.92). Confirmatory factor analyses found excellent model fit for the four-factor model (RMSR = 0.079; TLI = 0.929; CFI = 0.938). Criterion and concurrent validity were confirmed with high correlation coefficients between each of the four factors, previously validated menopausal symptom questionnaire, and Copenhagen Burnout Inventory scales, respectively (all ps < 0.0001). The developed scale was able to predict absenteeism with 78% sensitivity, 58% specificity, and an AUC of 0.727 (95%CI: 0.696-0.757). Higher scores of each factor as well as total score of the scale were more likely to be associated with work absence experience due to menopause-related symptoms even after adjusting for Copenhagen Burnout Inventory subscales (all ps < 0.0001). CONCLUSION We found that the developed scale has high validity and reliability and could be a significant indicator of absenteeism for working women in perimenopausal period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The menopause transition is a vulnerable period that can be associated with changes in mood and cognition. The present study aimed to investigate whether a symptomatic menopausal transition increases the risks of depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. METHODS This population-based, retrospective cohort study analysed data from five electronic health record databases in South Korea. Women aged 45-64 years with and without symptomatic menopausal transition were matched 1:1 using propensity-score matching. Subgroup analyses were conducted according to age and use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). A primary analysis of 5-year follow-up data was conducted, and an intention-to-treat analysis was performed to identify different risk windows over 5 or 10 years. The primary outcome was first-time diagnosis of depression, anxiety, and sleep disorder. We used Cox proportional hazard models and a meta-analysis to calculate the summary hazard ratio (HR) estimates across the databases. RESULTS Propensity-score matching resulted in a sample of 17,098 women. Summary HRs for depression (2.10; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.63-2.71), anxiety (1.64; 95% CI 1.01-2.66), and sleep disorders (1.47; 95% CI 1.16-1.88) were higher in the symptomatic menopausal transition group. In the subgroup analysis, the use of HRT was associated with an increased risk of depression (2.21; 95% CI 1.07-4.55) and sleep disorders (2.51; 95% CI 1.25-5.04) when compared with non-use of HRT. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that women with symptomatic menopausal transition exhibit an increased risk of developing depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. Therefore, women experiencing a symptomatic menopausal transition should be monitored closely so that interventions can be applied early.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated the factors associated with the high susceptibility of perimenopausal women to depression. METHODS A total of 66 perimenopausal women participated in this study. The Zung self-rating depression scale (SDS) was used to evaluate the intensity of depressive symptoms. The modified Kupperman index (KI) was used to assess common perimenopausal symptoms. Psychosocial factors were assessed via the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, attitudes toward menopause checklist, and metacognition questionnaire (MCQ). Levels of serum estradiol, testosterone, and progesterone were determined. RESULTS There were statistically significant associations between SDS standard score and the KI scale score (β = .361, p = .001), years of education (β = -.309, p = .005), and F3 cognitive self-consciousness score of MCQ (β = -.234, p = .032; adjusted R2 = .264, F = 8.759, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS High susceptibility to depression of perimenopausal women may be related to lower educational level, more severe perimenopausal symptoms, and altered metacognition.

Abstract
With the development of social economics and the increase of working pressure, more and more women are suffering from long-term serious stress and showing symptoms of perimenopausal depression (PMD). The incidence rate of PMD is increasing, and the physical and mental health are seriously affected. However, due to the lack of accurate knowledge of pathophysiology, its diagnosis and treatment cannot be accurately executed. By consulting the relevant literature in recent years, this paper elaborates the neuroendocrine mechanism of perimenopausal depression from the aspects of epigenetic changes, monoamine neurotransmitter and receptor hypothesis, glial cell-induced neuroinflammation, estrogen receptor, interaction between HPA axis and HPG axis, and micro-organism-brain gut axis. The purpose is to probe into new ways of treatment of PMD by providing new knowledge about the neuroendocrine mechanism and treatment of PMD.

Association of the Dietary Inflammatory Index with Depressive Symptoms among Pre- and Post-Menopausal Women: Findings from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2010. Abstract
During their lifetime, 20% of US women experience depression. Studies have indicated that a high Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) score is associated with high C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and depression. No previous study has compared the association of the DII with different measures of depression (e.g., somatic, cognitive) among pre- and post-menopausal women. We used data from 2512 pre-menopausal and 2392 post-menopausal women from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005−2010 database. We ran linear and logistic regression models to compare the association of the DII with survey-measured depression among pre- and post-menopausal women. We further assessed the mediation effect of CRP on the association of the DII and depression, using structural equation modeling. The odds of experiencing depression among pre-menopausal women was higher for all DII quartiles compared to the reference group (i.e., DII Q1), with an odds ratio (OR) of 3.2, 5.0, and 6.3 for Q2, Q3, and Q4, respectively (p < 0.05). Among post-menopausal women, only Q4 had 110% higher odds of experiencing depression compared to Q1 (p = 0.027). No mediation effect of CRP was found between DII and any of our depression outcome measures. Our findings suggest that lifestyle habits, such as diet, may have a stronger influence on mental health among pre-menopausal women than post-menopausal women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the severity and risk factors of menopausal symptoms in the middle-aged women in Gansu Province of China. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, a total of 7319 women (aged 40-55 years) attended the health survey in Gansu Province in China were enrolled. Information on demographics, menopausal status, reproductive history, and history of chronic diseases was collected via a structured questionnaire. Severity of menopausal symptom was evaluated by the Modified Kupperman Menopausal Index. Ordinal logistic regression model was applied to explore its risk factors. RESULTS A total of 7319 participants were included in present study, among them, 3606 (49.27%) had moderate or severe menopausal symptom. Compared with premenopausal women, perimenopausal and postmenopausal women have a higher mKMI score. We observed that older age, higher BMI, non-married status, longer duration of menstruation (≥ 7 days), number of pregnancy (> 3 times), longer duration of breastfeeding (> 12 months), peri- or post-menopausal status, and menopause hormone therapy was positively associated with menopausal symptom score, while higher level of family income, educational and physical activity, and history of gynecological, breast or chronic disease were negatively associated with the score. CONCLUSIONS Numerous factors were associated with the severity of menopausal symptom among the Chinese women. Because it was gradually increased with aging, more attention is warranted to manage the menopausal symptom.

Abstract
The quantity and quality of interpersonal relations (including participation in University of the Third Age-U3A) play an important role for women during menopausal changes. Women who have a social network are found to be more positive about menopause, and are less likely to be depressed. This case-control study aimed to analyze the relationship between participating in formal social groups and health status related to physical activity and climacteric and depressive symptoms. The study was conducted among 621 peri- and postmenopausal women aged 50-64 years. The women were classified into two groups: U3A and controls. The participants were selected using a multistage sampling method. The IPAQ (The International Physical Activity Questionnaire), Kupperman Index (KI), and Beck Depression Inventory were used for data collection. Significant differences between the groups were confirmed in the area of professional work (p < 0.001), free time (p < 0.001), and sitting (p < 0.05). The average KI score in the U3A group was higher (t-Student = 2.12, p < 0.05). Depressive symptoms were found in 43.49% of U3A women vs. 51.15% in controls (p < 0.01). We conclude that participation in formal social groups is associated with higher level of physical activity and reduced severity of both climacteric and depressive symptoms.

Abstract
The menopausal transition constitutes a phase of major biopsychosocial changes associated with an elevated risk for the development of depression. Perimenopausal depression is highly prevalent and usually characterized by core symptoms of a major depressive disorder combined with menopausal complaints such as vasomotor symptoms or other physical complaints. However, a distinct definition of the condition is lacking. The aim of this review is to portray the symptoms assessed in studies on perimenopausal depression in order to provide relevant information on the current understanding of this condition. A literature search was conducted using the databases PubMed, Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO. A total of 37 studies were included. Various assessment tools have been used to measure symptoms related to perimenopausal depression. Fifteen symptoms were identified. Depressed mood was assessed across all studies. Low energy or sleep disturbances, as acknowledged symptoms of a major depressive disorder, were surveyed in most studies. However, the assessment of menopausal complaints was rather heterogeneous. While vasomotor symptoms were often measured, other menopausal symptoms such as mood swings or pain were investigated less frequently. Sexual problems were only rarely assessed. Studies on perimenopausal depression regularly include the assessment of core symptoms of a major depressive disorder, but the assessment of menopausal complaints is inconsistent. While certain symptoms are commonly measured, others are not assessed. Such inconsistencies underline an ambiguous understanding of perimenopausal depression, which in turn affects the evaluation and treatment of the condition. Thus, the use of the existing guidelines on perimenopausal depression is recommended.

Abstract
The prevalence of depression in later life is higher in women than in men. However, the sex difference in the pathophysiology of depression in elderly patients is not fully understood. Here, we performed gene expression profiling in leukocytes of middle-aged and elderly patients with major depressive disorder, termed later-life depression (LLD) in this context, and we characterized the sex-dependent pathophysiology of LLD. A microarray dataset obtained from leukocytes of patients (aged ≥50 years) with LLD (32 males and 39 females) and age-matched healthy individuals (20 males and 24 females) was used. Differentially expressed probes were determined by comparing the expression levels between patients and healthy individuals, and then functional annotation analyses (Ingenuity Pathway Analysis, Reactome pathway analysis, and cell-type enrichment analysis) were performed. A total of 1656 probes were differentially expressed in LLD females, but only 3 genes were differentially expressed in LLD males. The differentially expressed genes in LLD females were relevant to leukocyte extravasation signaling, Tec kinase signaling and the innate immune response. The upregulated genes were relevant to myeloid lineage cells such as CD14+ monocytes. In contrast, the downregulated genes were relevant to CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Remarkable innate immune signatures are present in the leukocytes of LLD females but not males. Because inflammation is involved in the pathophysiology of depression, the altered inflammatory activity may be involved in the pathophysiology of LLD in women. In contrast, abnormal inflammation may be an uncommon feature in LLD males.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between prophylactic bilateral oophorectomy and use of antidepressants in women with a family history of cancer. METHODS Nationwide population-based cohort study using Danish National Registries including women oophorectomized due to a family history of cancer (n = 2,002) and an age matched reference group (n = 18,018). Analyses were stratified by age at time of bilateral oophorectomy and use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). RESULTS Women oophorectomized at age ≤ 45 years were more likely to use antidepressants from the first year after bilateral oophorectomy (OR = 1.34; 95 % CI: 1.08-1.65) compared to the reference group. Women oophorectomized at age 46-55 years and at age >55 years had no significantly increased use of antidepressants (OR = 0.90; 95 % CI: 0.68-1.18 and OR = 1.14; 95 % CI: 0.81-1.61). The increased use of antidepressants in women oophorectomized at age ≤ 45 years was limited to women treated with HRT (OR = 1.51; 95 % CI: 1.18-1.94) whereas women oophorectomized at age ≤ 45 years not treated with HRT had no increased use of antidepressants (OR = 1.03; 95 % CI: 0.70-1.51). CONCLUSIONS Women oophorectomized due to a family history of cancer at age ≤ 45 years were more likely to use antidepressants after bilateral oophorectomy. The increased use of antidepressants was limited to women treated with HRT. The study calls for further large-scale studies to understand how bilateral oophorectomy and concomitant HRT affects risk of depression in women with a family history of cancer.

Abstract
Depression in women is more common during perimenopause (the transition to menopause) than at other times in the life cycle. Symptoms of depression may be different in perimenopausal women compared to younger or older women, and are often dismissed as part of normal menopause. This is an expert narrative review. There are several evidence-based screening modalities which can be integrated into routine women's health visits, and can facilitate distinguishing between depression and normal perimenopausal symptoms. There is emerging evidence regarding the effect of hormonal changes on the development of perimenopausal depression and its optimal treatment, though critical research gaps remain. Obstetrician-gynecologists and other primary care providers play a vital role in the detection and management of depression in women. Providers caring for women during perimenopause have a unique opportunity to diagnose depression in their patients and identify appropriate treatment options.

Abstract
Depression can occur due to common major life transitions, such as giving birth, menopause, retirement, empty-nest transition, and midlife crisis. Although some of these transitions are perceived as positive (e.g., giving birth), they may still lead to depression. We conducted a systematic literature review of the factors underlying the occurrence of depression following major life transition in some individuals. This review shows that major common life transitions can cause depression if they are sudden, major, and lead to loss (or change) of life roles (e.g., no longer doing motherly or fatherly chores after children leave family home). Accordingly, we provide a theoretical framework that explains depression caused by transitions in women. One of the most potential therapeutic methods of ameliorating depression associated with life transitions is either helping individuals accept their new roles (e.g., accepting new role as a mother to ameliorate postpartum depression symptoms) or providing them with novel life roles (e.g., volunteering after retirement or children leave family home) may help them overcome their illness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Within the female life cycle, the perimenopause is considered as a critical period for the development of depression. Prevalence rates are particularly high during this phase. Perimenopausal depression is characterized by affective symptoms as well as menopause-specific somatic complaints. Currently, a variety of questionnaires are used to assess mood during the perimenopause. The aim of this review is to determine the instruments employed to assess perimenopausal depression. METHODS We searched the databases PubMed, Cochrane Library and PsycINFO for human studies investigating perimenopausal depression, and subsequently screened for the assessment instruments used to measure mood and menopause. A total of 37 articles were included. RESULTS Altogether, 14 different instruments were applied to assess mood during menopause. The CES-D was by far the most frequently used depression scale, appearing in 16 out of the 37 studies. The methods used to identify perimenopausal status and symptoms were inconsistent. LIMITATIONS Due to lacking information about data and methodology, a selection bias is conceivable. Additionally, a publication bias is possible. Finally, there is inevitable subjectivity in the screening process of a systematic search. CONCLUSIONS The assessment of depression in the menopausal transition is highly heterogeneous, reducing the overall comparability of study results. Furthermore, menopausal complaints are not sufficiently taken into account. Accordingly, the use of a menopause-specific depression scale is highly recommended in order to account for physical and mood-related symptoms in the menopausal transition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study analyzed the epidemiology and the risk factors of menopause syndrome (MPS) among Uyghur, Han, and Kazak women in Xinjiang. MATERIAL AND METHODS This was a cross-sectional study. The stratified-cluster random-sampling method was used. A total of 3382 women aged 40 to 60 years of age were included from Urumqi City, Kashgar City, Altay City, Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, Künes County, Mongolkure County, Tekes County,Talede town, Alemale Township, and Ulugchat County (Kashgar Prefecture) in Xinjiang Province. A questionnaire was used to survey the clinical characteristics of MPS. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the MPS risk factors among Uyghur, Han, and Kazak women. RESULTS Oral contraceptives, negative life events, and menopause stages can influence MPS in Han women. In addition, occupation, body weight, mental illness, drug or alcohol abuse, and income level also affect the MPS of Uyghur women. In contrast to Han and Uyghur participants, education, menopausal pattern (natural or artificial), reproductive factors, and smoking are risk factors of MPS in Kazakh women. CONCLUSIONS The menopausal stages and the risk factors for MPS are different among Uyghur, Han, and Kazak women.

Abstract
The relationship of depression with levels of serum inflammatory factors and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in patients with perimenopausal syndrome was analyzed to investigate the predictive values of risk factors for depression in patients with perimenopausal syndrome. A total of 73 patients with perimenopausal syndrome were selected, and divided into the depression (n=30) and non-depression (n=43) groups. Results showed that the self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS) scores in the depression group were significantly higher than those in the non-depression group (P<0.05). The serum BDNF level in the depression group was significantly lower than that in the non-depression group (P<0.05). The levels of serum inflammatory factors, including C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), in depression group were obviously higher than those in non-depression group (P<0.05). The correlation analyses of serum inflammatory factor and BDNF levels with depression showed that CRP and TNF-α were positively correlated with SDS score, while BDNF level was negatively correlated with SDS score. Logistic regression analyses revealed that menstrual status, chronic diseases, serum inflammatory factors (CRP, IL-6 and TNF-α) and BDNF levels had independent predictive values for depression in patients with perimenopausal syndrome (P<0.05). In conclusion, levels of serum CRP, IL-6, TNF-α and BDNF can be used as judgment indicators for the severity of depression.

Abstract
False memories are common memory distortions in everyday life and seem to increase with affectively connoted complex information. In line with recent studies showing a significant interaction between the noradrenergic system and emotional memory, we investigated whether healthy volunteer carriers of the deletion variant of the ADRA2B gene that codes for the α2b-adrenergic receptor are more prone to false memories than non-carriers. In this study, we collected genotype data from 212 healthy female volunteers; 91 ADRA2B carriers and 121 non-carriers. To assess gene effects on false memories for affective information, factorial mixed model analysis of variances (ANOVAs) were conducted with genotype as the between-subjects factor and type of memory error as the within-subjects factor. We found that although carriers and non-carriers made comparable numbers of false memory errors, they showed differences in the direction of valence biases, especially for inferential causal errors. Specifically, carriers produced fewer causal false memory errors for scripts with a negative outcome, whereas non-carriers showed a more general emotional effect and made fewer causal errors with both positive and negative outcomes. These findings suggest that putatively higher levels of noradrenaline in deletion carriers may enhance short-term consolidation of negative information and lead to fewer memory distortions when facing negative events.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Women are believed to be more vulnerable to develop a depression or depressive symptoms during the perimenopause. Estimates from individual studies are heterogeneous and hence true risk estimate is unknown. OBJECTIVE This study investigated the risk on clinical depression and depressive symptoms during the perimenopause when compared to other female hormonal stages. METHODS We performed a meta-analysis of 11 studies identified in Pubmed, Web of Science and the Cochrane library (up to July 2015). Studies were included when the perimenopause was defined according the criteria of Stages of Reproductive Aging Workshop (STRAW). The outcome measures were Odds Ratio's (OR) on depression diagnosis and depressive symptoms and standardized mean difference (Hedges's g) in depression scores during each menopausal stage. RESULTS The odds to develop a depression were not significantly higher during the perimenopause than in the premenopause (OR=1.78 95% CI=0.99-3.2; p=0.054). A higher risk was found on depressive symptoms during the perimenopause as compared to the premenopause (OR=2.0, 95% CI=1.48-2.71; p<0.001) but not compared to the postmenopause (OR=1.07, 95% CI=0.737-1.571; p=0.70). There was a higher symptom severity of depression in the perimenopause when compared to the premenopause (Hedges's g=0.44, 95% CI=0.11-0.73, p=0.007). The odds on vasomotor symptoms and depression were 2.25 (95% CI=1.14-3.35; p<0.001) during the perimenopause. LIMITATIONS Time interval in measuring the depressive symptoms was different in studies. Menopausal symptoms possibly may have confounded our results by increasing the scores on depression questionnaires. Publication bias needs to be considered. CONCLUSION The perimenopause is a phase in which women are particular vulnerable to develop depressive symptoms and have higher symptom severity compared to the premenopause. There are indications that vasomotor symptoms are positively related to depressive symptoms during menopausal transition.

Abstract
By 2022, the number of survivors is expected to grow to nearly 18 million. Therefore, addressing acute and chronic negative sequelae of a cancer diagnosis and its treatments becomes a health imperative. For women with a history of breast cancer, one of the common goals of treatment and prevention of recurrence is to reduce circulating concentrations of estradiol, especially in women with hormone receptor positive breast cancer. Hormone deprivation after a diagnosis of breast cancer impacts physiological targets other than in the breast tissue and can result in unwanted side effects, all of which can negatively impact quality of life and function and cause distress. Symptoms that are most strongly linked by evidence to hormone changes after cancer diagnosis and treatment include hot flashes, night sweats, sleep changes, fatigue, mood changes, and diminishing sexual function, including vaginal atrophy (decreased arousal, dryness and dyspareunia), infertility, decreased desire and negative self-image. Weight gain and resulting body image changes are often concomitants of the abrupt onset of treatment-induced menopause. The purpose of this chapter is to briefly review what is known about the advent of premature menopause in women treated for breast cancer, menopausal symptoms that are exacerbated by endocrine treatments for breast cancer, and the associated concerns of hot flashes and related menopausal symptoms, sexual health and fertility issues. We will discuss limitations in the current research and propose strategies that address current limitations in order to move the science forward.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Subsyndromal depression (SSD) is considered as a predictor for future depressive disorders, however whether white matter abnormalities are involved in the high-susceptibility of women to depressive disorders during perimenopause is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate fractional anisotropy (FA) in the white matter of the whole brain in perimenopausal women with SSD using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). METHODS In a cross-sectional study, 24 perimenopausal women with SSD and 24 other age-, education-, and body mass index-matched healthy women underwent DTI. A voxel-based analysis was used to elucidate regional FA changes at a voxel threshold of p < 0.001 with an extent threshold of k > 127 voxels (p < 0.05, AlphaSim correction). Subsequently, correlation analyses were performed between mean FA values in significant brain regions and plasma estradiol level. RESULTS Compared to healthy controls, women with SSD exhibited significantly lower FA values in the left insula, while higher FA values were observed in the left ventral lateral thalamus and left and right brainstem in the midbrain. In subjects with SSD, the mean FA value in the left insula was positively correlated to plasma estradiol levels (r = 0.453, p = 0.026) (uncorrected). CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate altered microstructures in white matter of the insula and subcortical regions may be associated with the high susceptibility of perimenopausal women to depressive disorders. Estrogen may modulate the white matter microstructure of the insula.
