Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of psychological factors such as self-efficacy, illness-related fear, and intolerance of uncertainty on illness management and quality of life of patients who have epilepsy have important roles in understanding the health behaviors of individuals. AIM The present study was conducted to examine the relationship between self-efficacy, illness-related fear, and intolerance of uncertainty in patients who have epilepsy and to investigate the mediating role of illness-related fear in the relationship between self-efficacy and intolerance of uncertainty. METHOD This cross-sectional and correlational study had a descriptive design and was conducted with 150 epilepsy patients who met the inclusion criteria and applied to the neurology clinic of a university hospital. The study population comprised epilepsy patients who applied to the Neurology Clinic of a university hospital in eastern Türkiye between May 2024 and August 2024. The data were collected by using the Personal Information Form, Epilepsy Self-Efficacy Scale, Illness-Related Fear Scale, and Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale - Community Form. The Structural Equation Modeling and Bootstrapping Methods were used to analyze the study data. The study was reported following the STROBE Recommendations. RESULTS Based on the findings, self-efficacy was found to negatively affect intolerance of uncertainty about the illness (b = -0.384, 95 % CI [-0.462 to -0.306], p < 0.01) and illness-related fear (b = -0.449, 95 % CI [-0.544 to -0.344], p < 0.01). Also, illness-related fear was found to positively affect intolerance of uncertainty (b = 0.688, 95 % CI [0.586 to 0.789], p < 0.01). The indirect effect of self-efficacy on intolerance of uncertainty through illness-related fear (b = -0.309, 95 % CI [-0.444 to -0.210], p < 0.01) was found to be negative and significant and the total effect (b = -0.693, 95 % CI [-0.789 to -0.597], p < 0.01) was also negative and significant. Self-efficacy explained 34 % of the illness-related fear and 59 % of the total intolerance of uncertainty in the model. The estimated effects were calculated with 5000 repeated operations and were evaluated to be significant because the indirect effects did not include zero in the 95 % Confidence Interval. CONCLUSION The results of the present study showed that self-efficacy has a direct negative impact on intolerance of uncertainty in patients who have epilepsy and that fear related to the illness plays mediating roles in this effect.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to examine seizure self-efficacy and quality of life of children with epilepsy and to evaluate the relationship between these parameters. METHOD The study was conducted between November 2022 and November 2023 in the Pediatric Neurology Outpatient Clinic of a university hospital with 200 children aged 9-14 who met the inclusion criteria and accepted the study. The data were collected using the "Child Descriptive Form," "Seizure Self-Efficacy Scale in Children with Epilepsy," and "KIDSCREEN-27 Health-Related Quality of Life Scale". The data were evaluated using the IBM SPSS Statistics Standard Concurrent User V 26 statistical package program. Number, percentage, mean-standard deviation, median, minimum and maximum values, Cronbach's Alpha coefficient, Shapiro Wilk normality test, Independent Sample t-test, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Bonferroni test, Pearson correlation coefficient, linear regression analysis, Durbin-Watson value and normality of residuals Q-Q graphs were used in the evaluation of the data. A value of p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS It was determined that 53 % of the children participating in the study were male, and the median age was 12 years. The mean total score of the seizure self-efficacy scale was 3.13 ± 1.03, and the mean total score of the health-related quality of life scale was 89.83 ± 15.63. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the dimension of individual seizure control and total score of health-related quality of life and physical well-being, emotional well-being and social support, and peer dimensions (p < 0.05). A statistically significant positive correlation was determined between the effect of environment on seizure control and health-related quality of life total score, physical well-being, social support, and peer and school environment dimensions (p < 0.05). A statistically significant positive correlation was determined between seizure self-efficacy total score and health-related quality of life total score and physical well-being, emotional well-being, social support, and peer dimensions (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The study results reveal that high self-efficacy levels of children with epilepsy improve the quality of life of children with epilepsy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study focused on an online education program based on Individual and Family Self-Management Theory. PURPOSE The study investigated whether the education program affected adolescents' attitudes toward epilepsy, seizure self-efficacy, quality of life, and their parents' perceived nurse-support levels. METHODS The study is a single-blind, randomized, controlled trial. The study was conducted in the pediatric neurology outpatient clinic of a medical hospital between January 2021 and April 2022 in Konya. The sample consisted of adolescents with epilepsy (n = 36) and their parents (n = 36). The intervention group attended the education program in three main sessions, two weeks apart. The control group received routine education. Data were collected using a Child Demographics Form (CDF), a Parent Demographics Form (PDF), the Child Attitude Toward Illness Scale (CATIS), the Self-Efficacy Scale for Children with Epilepsy (SSES-C), the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), and the Nurse Parents Support Tool (NPST). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's chi-square test, Fisher's Exact test, independent samples t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Mixed design ANOVA analysis, Cohen's d, and 95 % confidence interval. This study adhered to CONSORT research guidelines. RESULTS The intervention group adolescents had a significantly higher mean of all scale scores than the control group adolescents. The intervention group parents had a significantly higher mean NPST score than the control group parents. CONCLUSION Healthcare professionals should organize theory-based online education programs for adolescents and their parents at regular intervals for the self-management of epilepsy in special situations, such as pandemics, where face-to-face education is impossible. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS The study revealed that, unlike existing cues that highlight the effectiveness of face-to-face education, online interventions will strengthen epilepsy self-management of children with epilepsy and their parents. In extreme situations where face-to-face education has to be postponed for a long time and in routine education interventions, it is recommended to plan and implement online education so that children with chronic diseases can maintain their self-management. Abstract
BACKGROUND Seizure-related self-efficacy is the belief individuals have that they can perform the necessary actions to cope effectively with their seizures. Determining, developing, strengthening, and maintaining the perception of self-efficacy in children with epilepsy facilitates the child's disease management and their ability to cope with it. This study aimed to assess the impact of epilepsy-related parental fears during the COVID-19 period on the seizure self-efficacy of their children. METHODS A total of 321 children with epilepsy and their parents participated in this descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional study. Data were collected through the Descriptive Information Form, the Seizure Self-Efficacy Scale for Children (SSES-C), and the Epilepsy-Related Fears in Parents Questionnaire (EFPQ). Descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, and mean scores, were used to analyze the characteristics of the children and their parents. The Shapiro-Wilk test was utilized to assess the normality of the scale data. Pearson correlation analysis examined the relationship between parents' epilepsy-related fears and their children's seizure self-efficacy, while multiple regression analysis determined the effect of parental fears on children's seizure self-efficacy. RESULTS The mean age of children included in the study was 12.65±2.37 years. Analysis revealed a strong and significant negative correlation between parents' epilepsy-related fears during the COVID-19 period and the seizure self-efficacy of their children. In the model created with regression analysis, The mean scores of parents on the short-term fears of parents about epilepsy of the EFPQ explained 85 % of children's seizure self-efficacy. The mean scores of parents on the long-term fears of parents about epilepsy of the EFPQ explained 85 % of children's seizure self-efficacy. It was determined that all of these variables together explained 85 % of the seizure self-efficacy of children with epilepsy. CONCLUSION The findings of the study underscore the importance of addressing parents' fears regarding epilepsy, emphasizing the need for healthcare professionals to be aware of and provide support for these concerns. Future studies should focus on interventions to enhance the seizure self-efficacy of children with epilepsy.

Abstract
PURPOSE Numerous inventories to identify felt stigma (FS) in people living with epilepsy (PLWE) have been developed. Past studies have mainly focused on the relationship between FS scores and clinical factors, making it challenging to delineate FS proportions and compare FS between groups. We aimed to integrate FS proportions in PLWE and compare them by continent. METHODS We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus. Among the identified studies, we chose the ones providing an FS proportion measured by Jacoby's Stigma Scale (JSS) and its revised version (JSS-R) in PLWE. We applied the random-effects model. RESULTS A total of 63 datasets from 47 studies were included. There were 29,924 PLWE, with 14,323 of them experiencing FS. The overall FS proportion was 48.4%. Of these datasets, 51 used JSS, and 12 used JSS-R. The FS proportions were 44.9% for the former and 62.1% for the latter, with significant heterogeneity. In the intercontinental comparison with 51 datasets employing JSS, the difference in FS proportions was insignificant: 51.2% in Africa, 47.2% in Europe, 35.4% in Asia, and 28.8% in the Middle East. Furthermore, the meta-regression revealed that the year of each primary study did not influence the FS proportion. CONCLUSION Among PLWE, FS proportions depended on the choice of a measurement tool. When measured using JSS, the FS proportion was 44.9%, while it was 62.1% when evaluated with JSS-R. Even though the FS proportions were integrated differently, no substantial differences were observed between continents.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Suboptimal medication adherence is common in people with epilepsy (PWE) and disproportionally prevalent among racially/ethnically diverse patients. Understanding reasons and risks of suboptimal adherence is critical to developing interventions that reduce negative health outcomes. This cross-sectional study characterized common barriers to medication self-management, prevalence of negative medication beliefs, and gaps in epilepsy knowledge among predominantly African American and Caribbean American PWE and examined their interrelationships. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty-three PWE (Age = 42.1 ± 13.2; 60% female; 79% Black; 19% Hispanic/Latino) completed validated self-report questionnaires about medication self-management, medication beliefs, and epilepsy knowledge. Correlations and t-tests examined interrelationships. RESULTS Four barriers to medication self-management were common, including not taking antiseizure medications at the same time every day, forgetting doses, not planning refills before running out, and spreading out doses when running low. More than half the sample believed medications were overused by prescribers. Nearly one-third believed medications were harmful, and nearly a quarter believed their antiseizure medications were minimally necessary with almost half reporting elevated concerns about negative consequences of antiseizure medications. Poorer medication self-management was associated with stronger beliefs that medications in general are harmful/overused by prescribers. Individuals who were "accepting" of their antiseizure medications (i.e., high perceived necessity, low concerns) were less likely to spread out time between doses when running low compared to non-accepting counterparts. Knowledge gaps related to the cause of seizures/epilepsy, chronicity of epilepsy treatment, and seizure semiology/diagnosis were common. Nevertheless, epilepsy knowledge was unrelated to medication self-management and medication beliefs. CONCLUSIONS In these PWE, the most prevalent reasons for suboptimal medication self-management were behaviorally mediated and potentially modifiable. Negative medication beliefs and misconceptions about epilepsy and its treatment were common. Results further suggest that interventions addressing negative medication beliefs will be more effective than knowledge-based psychoeducation alone to improve medication self-management in this patient population.

Abstract
PURPOSE We evaluated whether the relationship between general self-efficacy and depressive symptoms in patients with epilepsy differed depending on age, sex, and seizure status. METHODS This multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted on 299 adults with epilepsy, using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the General Self-efficacy Scale (GSES). We performed stepwise linear regression analysis and analysis of covariance with interaction terms. RESULTS The stepwise linear regression analysis showed that BDI scores were negatively correlated with GSES scores and positively correlated with age ≥ 40 years, unemployed status, recurrence of generalized or focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS or FBTCS), and antiseizure medication polytherapy. The final model explained 38.9% of the variance in BDI scores. The analysis of covariance revealed that the moderating effect of GSES scores on BDI scores was less in subjects who had seizure freedom for at least 1 year than in those who did not. In contrast, the moderating effect of GSES scores on BDI scores was greater in subjects who had an age ≥ 40 years and those who experienced GTCS or FBTCS during the previous year than in those who did not. The negative relationship between GSES and BDI scores tended to be stronger in men than in women, but it did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.098). All models were adjusted by significant factors in the linear regression analysis of BDI scores. CONCLUSIONS The negative relationship between general self-efficacy and depressive symptoms may be stronger in older patients and patients with poorer seizure outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review the evidence of felt and enacted stigma and attitudes toward persons living with epilepsy, and their determining factors. METHODS Thirteen databases were searched (1985-2019). Abstracts were reviewed in duplicate and data were independently extracted using a standardized form. Studies were characterized using descriptive analysis by whether they addressed "felt" or "enacted" stigma and "attitudes" toward persons living with epilepsy. RESULTS Of 4234 abstracts, 132 met eligibility criteria and addressed either felt or enacted stigma and 210 attitudes toward epilepsy. Stigma frequency ranged broadly between regions. Factors associated with enacted stigma included low level of knowledge about epilepsy, lower educational level, lower socioeconomic status, rural areas living, and religious grouping. Negative stereotypes were often internalized by persons with epilepsy, who saw themselves as having an "undesirable difference" and so anticipated being treated differently. Felt stigma was associated with increased risk of psychological difficulties and impaired quality of life. Felt stigma was linked to higher seizure frequency, recency of seizures, younger age at epilepsy onset or longer duration, lower educational level, poorer knowledge about epilepsy, and younger age. An important finding was the potential contribution of epilepsy terminology to the production of stigma. Negative attitudes toward those with epilepsy were described in 100% of included studies, and originated in any population group (students, teachers, healthcare professionals, general public, and those living with epilepsy). Better attitudes were generally noted in those of younger age or higher educational status. SIGNIFICANCE Whatever the specific beliefs about epilepsy, implications for felt and enacted stigma show considerable commonality worldwide. Although some studies show improvement in attitudes toward those living with epilepsy over time, much work remains to be done to improve attitudes and understand the true occurrence of discrimination against persons with epilepsy.

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the self-efficacy of patients diagnosed with epilepsy. This descriptive-correlational study was conducted between November-December 2020 with individuals diagnosed with epilepsy and living in the eastern province of Turkey. The sample of the study consisted of individuals diagnosed with epilepsy (101 persons) who were living in this province and agreed to participate in the study. According to the findings obtained from the study, the Epilepsy Self-efficacy Scale Total Mean Score of the individuals was found to be 226.38 ± 45.23. The scale does not have a cut-off point, and the total score that can be obtained from the scale varies between 0 and 310. An increase in the score obtained indicates high self-efficacy. It can be said that the self-efficacy levels of the sampled individuals are also high. It was found that there was a negative correlation between the first diagnosis age and the seizure management sub-dimension, and a positive statistically significant correlation between the age of the individuals and the age of the first seizure. The Epilepsy Self-efficacy Scale Total Mean Score of the individuals was found to be statistically high in those who received information regarding the disorder and used their drug/drugs regularly. It is suggested to conduct the study in larger groups. It is recommended to carry out studies to increase epilepsy self-efficacy.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to determine the self-efficacy levels of individuals with epilepsy and also compare individuals' self-efficacy with sociodemographic and epilepsy-related characteristics. MATERIAL AND METHODS The cross-sectional study was carried out with 200 individuals with epilepsy who were suitable for the inclusion criterias. Data were collected using patient information form which includes sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and Epilepsy Self-Efficacy Scale for evaluating epilepsy-related self-efficacy levels of patients. RESULTS The self-efficacy levels of the patients were moderate. Education, gender, occupational status, income, seizure frequency, regular use of medication, the number of drugs used, patient behavior following a drug-related problem, family support, the ability to obtain information about the illness, and hiding the illness from other people were significant factors determining scores on the epilepsy self-efficacy scale. CONCLUSION This study confirms the findings of previous studies that were conducted to determine factors affecting self-efficacy. In order to increase self-efficacy, the findings show that there is a need for social support, education of epilepsy individuals, and information and awareness in society.

Abstract
PURPOSE There have been little researches examining the role of family functioning on psychological outcomes in the field of adult epilepsy. We determined whether family functioning is correlated with felt stigma in adults with epilepsy. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, adults with epilepsy and their caregivers were recruited. Data were collected using the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES) III, the Family adaptation, partnership, growth, affection, and resolve (APGAR) questionnaire, the Stigma Scale for Epilepsy (SS-E), the modified questionnaire for episodes of discrimination, and the Beck Depression Inventory. Family functioning was measured by the caregivers. RESULTS A total of 273 adult patients and their primary caregivers were included. Multivariate logistic analyses showed that family cohesion and excellent family functioning were negatively correlated with felt stigma after controlling for confounding variables. Enacted stigma, depressive symptoms, and university education were also significant. Interaction between enacted stigma and family cohesion on felt stigma was significant (p = 0.049). Family cohesion was negatively correlated with felt stigma only in the patients with enacted stigma (p = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS Family functioning especially family cohesion may have protective effects against development of felt stigma in adults with epilepsy. Such protecting effects against felt stigma may be different according to enacted stigma. This understanding is helpful for developing effective psychosocial interventions to reduce felt stigma in patients with epilepsy.

Abstract
This study used a descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional research design to evaluate the effect of seizure self-efficacy of children with epilepsy on their perceived stigma of seizure. The study was conducted with 303 children with epilepsy. The data of the study were collected using "the Seizure Self-Efficacy Scale for Children" and "the Scale for Perceived Stigma in Children with Epilepsy". The mean age of the children included in the study was 12.65 ± 2.37. The correlation between seizure self-efficacy of the children and their perceived seizure stigma was examined; a strong, significant, and negative correlation was found. It is recommended that the awareness of all health professionals should be increased in approaching children with epilepsy and that self-efficacy and stigma should be addressed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is common and associated with reduced quality of life (QoL) in people with epilepsy (PWE). Although multiple studies have investigated the relevant predictors, the results have been inconsistent. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the risk factors that might increase the possibility of depression in this population. METHODS Medline, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase were comprehensively searched for cross-sectional studies on the occurrence of depression in PWE. A random effects model was used to calculate the pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Heterogeneity between the study results and the probability of publication bias were also assessed. RESULTS Fifty-one cross-sectional studies with sample sizes ranging from 36 to 1763 were included in this meta-analysis. The significant factors associated with an increased risk of depression were older age (odds ratio [OR]: 1.02, 95% CI: 1.00-1.04; p = 0.019), female gender (OR: 1.58, 95% CI: 1.30-1.93; p < 0.001), low education level (OR: 3.38, 95% CI: 2.86-4.00; p < 0.001), not being employed (OR: 1.61, 95% CI: 1.08-2.38; p = 0.019), poor antiepileptic drug (AED) adherence (OR: 2.84, 95% CI: 1.94-4.16; p < 0.001), polytherapy (OR: 2.25, 95% CI: 1.48-3.41; p < 0.001), stigma (OR: 2.22, 95% CI: 1.71-2.88; p < 0.001), and anxiety (OR: 2.21, 95% CI: 1.66-2.94; p < 0.001). A shorter epilepsy duration was significantly associated with a lower risk of depression (OR: 0.99, 95% CI: 0.99-0.99; p < 0.001), whereas marital status (OR: 1.07, 95% CI: 0.90-1.20; p = 0.684), economic level (OR: 1.01, 95% CI: 0.95-1.08; p = 0.684), age at seizure onset (OR: 0.99, 95% CI: 0.75-1.29; p = 0.912), and seizure control (OR: 1.03, 95% CI: 0.65-1.63; p = 0.900) did not increase the risk of depression. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis defined several factors related to an increased risk of depression in PWE and can contribute to better prevention and screening strategies for depression in this group. The mechanisms behind this comorbidity remain to be further investigated to determine individually appropriate and targeted interventions.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in stigma, disclosure management of epilepsy, and knowledge about epilepsy between patients with epilepsy who recognized and did not recognize the new Korean term for epilepsy. METHODS This was a cross-sectional, multicenter study. The Stigma Scale-Revised, the Disclosure Management Scale, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and a questionnaire assessing knowledge about epilepsy were used. The set of questionnaires had two versions, using either the old or new name for epilepsy. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used. RESULTS A total of 341 patients with epilepsy and 509 family members were recruited. Approximately 62% of patients felt some degree of epilepsy-related stigma. Mild stigma, severe concealment of epilepsy diagnosis, and increased knowledge about epilepsy were independently identified as factors associated with recognition of the new term in patients. Recognition of the new term was more prevalent in patients and family members with higher education, female family members, and family members having patients with younger age at seizure onset and shorter duration of epilepsy. There were no significant differences between the two types of questionnaires. About 81% of patients and 93% of family members had a positive attitude about renaming epilepsy. CONCLUSION The use of the new Korean term for epilepsy (cerebroelectric disorder) increased knowledge about epilepsy but did not reduce stigma and concealment of epilepsy diagnosis in Korean adults with epilepsy. Higher education may be an important factor for knowing the new term in patients and family members.

A structured questionnaire was utilized, which consisted of 3 parts: sociodemographic factors, disease characteristics, and an epilepsy knowledge scale - the Epilepsy Knowledge Profile-General (E.K.P-G) scale. There was a total of 108 patients, 43 males and 65 females with an age range from 16 to 63 years. The average score of the subjects in the E.K.P-G scale was 16.4/34 (48%). Twenty out of the 34 questions were answered correctly by less than 50% of the respondents. There was an overall poor understanding of the etiology of epilepsy. A higher E.K.P-G score was significantly correlated with higher levels of education, higher household income, controlled seizures for more than 2 years, and living in urban areas. On the other hand, there was no significant correlation between the level of knowledge and age, gender, marital status, occupational status, type of seizure, duration of epilepsy, source of information, number of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), and family history of epilepsy. In conclusion, the study showed a significant lack of knowledge about epilepsy among PWE at JUH. A public educational program is necessary in Jordan to educate PWE about their disorder.

Abstract
PURPOSE Epilepsy not only is a medical disorder characterized by seizures, but is also associated with stigma and a neurological disorder that affects quality of life. Insufficient knowledge and misconceptions about epilepsy that causes the development of negative attitudes towards patients with epilepsy increase the stigmatization and psychosocial problems and impact the quality of life. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between epilepsy knowledge, attitude, stigma, anxiety and depression, and quality of life within the framework of structural equation modeling. METHOD This research was carried out between May 2015 and May 2016 at the Epilepsy Outpatient Clinic of Istanbul University Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. The Epilepsy Knowledge Scale, Epilepsy Attitude Scale, Stigma Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and Quality of Life in Epilepsy Scale-10 (QOLIE-10) were used. To determine the relationship between the concepts, research hypotheses were created, and structural equation modeling was made. RESULTS Two hundred five patients were included in the study, 53.7% were women, and the mean age was 32.5. It was found that 72.2% had generalized seizures, and 46.3% had more than one seizure per month. According to our proposed model, knowledge had a moderate relationship with attitude (including stigma) (r = 0.50) that, in turn, had a strong relationship with mental health (r = -0.62) while a moderate relationship with quality of life (r = 0.45). Our findings revealed that proposed model accounted for 20% of the variance in quality of life and 39% of the variance in mental health (anxiety and depression). CONCLUSION Mental health and quality of life of patient with epilepsy are closely related to the knowledge, attitude, and perceived stigma of the patients. Therefore, educating/supporting patients can help increase the mental health and quality of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Epilepsy is a chronic disease with an increased risk of stigmatization due to psychosocial consequences of the seizures. Intuitively, one may well conclude that stigmatization would lead to depression in patients with epilepsy as well as in other patient groups with increased risk of stigmatization. Indeed, there are a few studies in support of this intuition. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between level of stigmatization and the severity of the depressive symptoms in our patients with epilepsy. METHODS This is a substudy of our main study, which aimed to develop a scale for the quantification of the stigma level in patients with epilepsy. The study included a total of 302 patients with epilepsy, who had at least a literacy level education and one-week-seizure-freedom. Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used to quantify depressive symptoms. The correlation between BDI scores and the Stigma Scale for Epilepsy-Self Report (SSE-SR) scores was evaluated. A regression analysis was done in order to parse out significant sociodemographic and clinical factors contributing to depressive symptoms. Statistical analyses were done using the Statistics Package for the Social Sciences software 24.0 package program. RESULTS We saw that 46.9% (n=139) of this population rated themselves as having at least mildly depressive symptoms with BDI (BDI>9). There was a moderate positive correlation between stigma scores and BDI scores (p=0.000, r=0.504), and 96.3% of highly stigmatized patients had at least mildly depressive scores, 73.9% of the nonstigmatized group had none or minimal depressive scores. Stigma scores (β=.51), gender, educational level, seizure frequency, and income level were the variables significantly affecting the BDI scores. Stigma score accounted for 26.2% of the variance in the BDI score. CONCLUSION This study shows that stigmatization of the patients with epilepsy leads to depression in those patients. Therefore, protection of the patients with epilepsy against stigmatization may also help to protect them from a concomitant disabling condition. On the other hand, detection for depressive symptoms in already stigmatized patients with epilepsy may unearth a treatable condition.

Abstract
Transitioning from paediatric to adult care can be a particularly challenging time for young people with epilepsy and research has shown that there are a range of factors which may influence a young person's ability to successfully cope with this difficult time. The following study aimed to explore the psychosocial characteristics of this transitioning population, as well as investigate how knowledgeable the young person and their parent/carer are of their own condition throughout transition. Young people with epilepsy were recruited from two specialist epilepsy clinics in the North West and allocated to one of three groups; Group 1 pre-transition, Group 2 transitioning, and Group 3 post-transition. Results found that the young person's knowledge increased significantly throughout transition, whilst parent/carer's knowledge decreased. In addition, anxiety was found to be significantly lower in Group 2 (transitioning group) compared to Group 1 (pre-transition) and Group 3 (post-transition) and a number of significant gender differences were also identified across the groups. The study highlights the importance of considering all relevant psychosocial factors, such as anxiety, gender and the degree of knowledge the individual holds of their own condition during the transition process in order to develop psycho-educational programmes and transition pathways.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to understand and describe the illness experience of married Korean women with epilepsy. METHODS Data were collected during 2015~2016 through individual in-depth interviews with 12 married women with epilepsy. Verbatim transcripts were analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological analysis to uncover the meaning of the illness experience of the participants. RESULTS The study results showed that the illness experience of married Korean women with epilepsy was clustered into a specific description of situated structure and a general description of situated structure. Six themes from 20 meaning units were identified: 1) Undermined self-esteem with stigma of being epileptic; 2) Limited social interaction; 3) Suffering sorrow as a 'disqualified being'; 4) Shuttling back and forth across the boundary between healthy and epileptic; 5) Desperate struggle to meet the expectation of given role; 6) Self-empowering through self-restriction and realization. CONCLUSION The findings from this study show that both the enacted and felt stigma of epilepsy impact on the life of married Korean women with epilepsy. Although the participants face social and interpersonal restriction and prejudices, they try their best to fulfill their role rather than to be cared for as patients. As the stigma and hardships of the participants are related to lack of knowledge, health professionals should focus not just on clinical intervention but also on providing targeted educational programs and counseling for these women to dispel the stigma of the disease and to increase their quality of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Perceived stress in people with epilepsy (PWE) is one of the major precipitants for seizures. We investigated the degree of perceived stress in PWE and its predictors. We also aimed to reveal the interrelationships among the predictors. METHODS This was a case-control study. Consecutive patients visiting a tertiary care epilepsy clinic completed self-reported questionnaires including the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Revised Stigma Scale (RSS), Korean version of the Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy (K-NDDI-E), Generalized Anxiety Disorder - 7 (GAD-7), and short forms of the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System - Sleep Disturbance (PROMIS-SD) and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System - Sleep-Related Impairment (PROMIS-SRI) scales. RESULTS The mean score of the PSS was significantly lower in patients with well-controlled epilepsy (WCE) and higher in those with uncontrolled epilepsy compared with controls. Although several factors including demographic, socioeconomic, psychosomatic, and epilepsy-related factors were associated with the PSS score, the strongest predictor for the PSS score was the K-NDDI-E score, followed by the PROMIS-SRI score, the GAD-7 score, and seizure control. Psychosomatic factors exerted both a direct effect on the PSS score and an indirect effect on the PSS score through seizure control. CONCLUSION Rapid detection and appropriate management of psychiatric and sleep-related problems in PWE may lessen stress and aid in preventing further seizures.

Abstract
PURPOSE Epilepsy is one of the most stigmatizing medical conditions. The purpose of this study was to examine the perception of stigma and factors associated with stigma. MATERIAL AND METHODS This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among patients attending an epilepsy outpatient clinic of a university hospital between February and October 2014. One hundred ninety-four patients who were over 18years of age, who were able to communicate, and who had a diagnosis of definite epilepsy constituted the study sample. Patients seizure-free for two years were excluded from the group. Three-item Jacoby's Stigma Scale was used to determine level of stigma, and Social Support Scale, Generalized Self-efficacy Scale, Epilepsy Knowledge Scale, and Epilepsy Attitude Scale were used to examine factors associated with stigma. RESULTS In total, 66 (34%) out of 194 subjects reported feeling stigmatized, with almost half of them (n=31) feeling highly stigmatized. Education, income, age at onset, seizure frequency in previous year, social support, and knowledge and attitudes towards epilepsy were significant factors determining scores on the stigma scale. It was also determined that stigma was associated with seeking help from mystics, disclosure of the diagnosis, and self-efficacy. CONCLUSION This study confirms the findings of previous studies that have identified the importance of both clinical and nonclinical factors in understanding the stigma of epilepsy. Findings support the need for social support, knowledge, and awareness to decrease the stigma associated with epilepsy.
