Abstract
An ethylenediamine dicarboxyethyl diacetamido-bridged bis(β-cyclodextrin) was firstly synthesized through the reaction of 6-deoxy-6-amino-β-cyclodextrin (NH2-CD) with ethylenediaminetetraacetic dianhydride. Then it was bonded onto the surface of silica gel SBA-15 to obtain an ethylenediamine dicarboxyethyl diacetamido-bridged bis(β-CD)-bonded chiral stationary phase (EBCDP). The structures of the bridged bis(β-CD) and EBCDP were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and thermogravimetric analysis, accordingly. The chiral chromatographic performances of EBCDP were systematically evaluated by separating 28 racemic analytes in the reversed-phase or polar organic mode, including eight flavanones, eight bolckers, five dansyl-amino acids, three DL-amino acids and four other common drugs. As a result, the relatively high enantioselectivity of EBCDP was observed in comparison with a native β-CD-CSP (CDSP). All selected analytes were separated on EBCDP, of which 20 analytes had resolutions up to baseline, 2'-hydroxyflavanone and arotinolol had resolutions up to 4.35 and 2.05 in about 30 min, respectively, whereas CDSP only separated 11 analytes with low resolutions (0.55~1.69). Moreover, EBCDP was able to utilize the complexation of the bridging linker (ethylenediamine dicarboxyethyl diamide group, EDTA-based) to realize direct separations of DL-amino acids with a mobile phase containing copper ion (Cu2+), which was similar to the chiral ligand exchange chromatography. Unlike the native cyclodextrin with small cavity (~242 Å3), the bridged bis(β-CD) combined two β-CD units with a bridging linker, having a well-organized "pseudo-cavity" as an organic whole to encapsulate more analytes, which made EBCDP have broad-spectrum applications in chiral separations.

Abstract
The separation of the enantiomers of several a-amino acids was studied on a new chiral stationary phase (CSP) which is based on the macrocyclic glycopeptide antibiotic eremomycin attached to silica particles. Retention and separation factors were determined under analytical conditions at ambient temperature for different mobile phase compositions. In order to evaluate the potential with respect to preparative separations the adsorption isotherms of D- and L-methionine were determined for one mobile phase composition applying the elution by characteristic point method. The isotherms were validated by comparing experimentally determined elution profiles with predictions based on the equilibrium dispersive model. Finally, the performance of the eremomycin CSP was compared with a commercially available CSP based on the macrocyclic antibiotic teicoplanin. After determining the isotherms of D- and L-methionine also for the teicoplanin phase, the equilibrium dispersive model was used for both CSP to identify optimal operating conditions. For the separation and conditions considered the new eremomycin CSP revealed a better performance compared to the teicoplanin CSP.

Abstract
A dynamic coating of the RP-18 carbon chain layers with the new chiral selector (S)-(-)-alpha,alpha-di(2-naphthyl)-2-pyrrolidinemethanol allowed the formation of a mixed chiral stationary phase that has been used in the separation of a selected set of amino acid racemates. Both a representative model and classification structure-property relationship studies have been performed in order to study the contribution of hydrophobic, bulky and electron-donating groups in the side chain of the chiral selector to the mechanism of chiral recognition.

Abstract
S-benzyl-(R)-cysteine (R-SBC) is a new chiral ligand-exchange stationary phase which has proved to be effective in the analytical separation of some natural and unnatural underivatized amino acids with fair to good separation and resolution factors. The dynamic coating of the RP-18 solid support with S-Benzyl-(R)-cysteine (R-SBC) gives rise to a stable and efficient chiral stationary phase (CSP) that has been successfully employed. The mechanism of chiral recognition is discussed and a molecular modeling study aimed at identifying molecular descriptors responsible for observed different behaviours of analytes upon different albeit closely related selectors is discussed.

Abstract
The application of a chiral ligand-exchange column (CLEC) for the direct high-performance liquid chromatographic enantioseparation of unusual secondary amino acids using D-penicillamine-Cu(II) complex as chiral selector is reported. The amino acids investigated were pyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid, piperidine-2-carboxylic acid, piperazine-2-carboxylic acid, morpholine-3-carboxylic acid, and thiomorpholine-3-carboxylic acid analogs. Chromatographic results are given as the retention, separation, and resolution factors. The chromatographic conditions were varied to achieve optimal separation. The elution sequence of the enantiomers was determined and in most cases the S isomer eluted before R.

Abstract
A simple spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of penicillamine and carbocisteine. The method depends on complexation of penicillamine with Ni, Co and Pb ions in acetate buffer pH of 6.3, 6.5 and 5.3, respectively, and carbocisteine with Cu and Ni ions in borate buffer pH of 6.7; 1-70 microg/ml of these drugs could be determined by measuring the absorbance of each complex at its specific lambdamax. The results obtained are in good agreement with those obtained using the official methods. The proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of these compounds in their dosage forms. Also, the molar ratio and stability constant of the metal complexes were calculated and a proposal of the reaction pathway was postulated.

Abstract
A kinetic spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of carbocisteine, ethionamide, thioctic acid and penicillamine based on the catalytic effect on the reaction between sodium azide and iodine in aqueous solution. Ten to 100 microg ml(-1) of carbocisteine and ethionamide, 0.1-1 microg ml(-1) of thioctic acid and 0.01-0.1 microg ml(-1) of penicillamine could be determined, respectively, by measuring the decrease in the absorbance of iodine at 348 nm by a fixed time method. The decrease in the absorbance in the first 5 min from the initiation of the reaction is related to the concentration of the drugs. The detection limits were 0.47, 0.71, 0.018 and 9.38 x 10(-4) microg ml(-1) for the four drugs, respectively. The proposed procedure was successfully applied in the determination of these drugs in pharmaceutical preparations and human serum.

Abstract
The indirect high-performance liquid chromatographic enantioresolution of beta-alkyl-substituted analogues of tyrosine, phenylalanine, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid and tryptophan is reported. (S)-N-(4-Nitrophenoxycarbonyl)phenylalanine methoxyethyl ester, a recently developed chiral derivatizing agent, was used for pre-column derivatization of the investigated analytes. The diastereoisomers formed were analysed under reversed-phase conditions. The effects of parameters such as the amount and type of the organic modifier and the type of the stationary phase on the resolution and retention of the derivatives were investigated. Chromatographic conditions were found for the separation of all four stereoisomers of each analyte.

Abstract
Three chiral stationary phases were examined for the enantio- and diastereoseparation of cycloaliphatic beta-substituted alpha-quaternary alpha-amino acids. Resolution of diastereomeric analytes is feasible with a chiral crown ether based column, whereas the separation of enantiomers, except for one pair of amino acids, could not be achieved. The two chiral stationary phases with the glycopeptide antibiotic teicoplanin and with the copper(II)-D-penicillamine complex, respectively, are, however, both very potent in the separation of the enantiomeric, as well as of the diastereomeric amino acids. A baseline separation of all four stereoisomeric forms in one chromatographic run was possible with the exception of one type of amino acid. The results of the method development are presented in this paper.

Abstract
The reversal of the elution order of cyclic alpha-amino acid enantiomers as a function of the temperature on a copper(II)-N,S-dioctyl-D-penicillamine ligand-exchange column is described. The thermodynamic parameters accounting for the retention and the separation of analytes were determined by means of van't Hoff plots. The influence of different chromatographic conditions on these parameters was investigated, showing little effect of the Cu(II) concentration in the eluent but strong influence of the organic modifier content on the separation. Further, the pH of the mobile phase was found to be a determining factor for the retention of the analytes. Based on these findings, a separation mechanism is postulated comprising the importance of complex formation for primary docking at the stationary phase, while hydrophobic interactions are crucial for chiral discrimination.
