Abstract
In marine ecosystems, temperature regulates the energy metabolism of animals. In the last decades, the temperature increase was related to mass mortality events of marine ectotherms, particularly during high-energy investment for reproduction. In scallops, the mantle has been poorly investigated while this tissue covers more than 40 % of the body mass, contributing to the perception of surrounding environmental stimuli. Our aim was to assess the cellular and molecular responses linked to energy metabolism in the mantle of adult N. subnodosus facing acute hyperthermia during reproductive effort. Scallops collected in spring (late gametogenesis) and summer (ripe gonads) were exposed to a control temperature (22 °C) or acute hyperthermia (30 °C) for 24 h. In spring, increased arginine kinase (AK) activity together with increased pyruvate kinase/citrate synthase ratio (PK/CS) suggested an enhanced carbohydrate, pyruvate, and arginine metabolism to maintain the adenylate energy charge (AEC) in the mantle of scallops coping with acute thermal increase. In summer, animals decreased their AEC (5 %) and arginine phosphate pool (40 %) and increased their anaerobic metabolism as shown by enhanced activities of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and octopine dehydrogenase (ODH), respectively. The abundance of twenty proteins involved in energy metabolism (isocitrate dehydrogenase, ATP synthase subunit β), protein protection (cognate heat shock protein 70), and cytoskeleton (actins and tubulins) were affected only by season. These results underlie the role of the mantle of N. subnodosus in the seasonal responses of this tissue to thermal fluctuations during reproductive effort with possible implications for the physiological performance of scallops under heat waves in wild or harvest conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Carp fish, rohu (Labeo rohita Ham.) is important freshwater aquaculture species of South-East Asia having seasonal reproductive rhythm. There is no holistic study at transcriptome level revealing key candidate genes involved in such circannual rhythm regulated by biological clock genes (BCGs). Seasonality manifestation has two contrasting phases of reproduction, i.e., post-spawning resting and initiation of gonadal activity appropriate for revealing the associated candidate genes. It can be deciphered by RNA sequencing of tissues involved in BPGL (Brain-Pituitary-Gonad-Liver) axis controlling seasonality. How far such BCGs of this fish are evolutionarily conserved across different phyla is unknown. Such study can be of further use to enhance fish productivity as seasonality restricts seed production beyond monsoon season. RESULT A total of ~ 150 Gb of transcriptomic data of four tissues viz., BPGL were generated using Illumina TruSeq. De-novo assembled BPGL tissues revealed 75,554 differentially expressed transcripts, 115,534 SSRs, 65,584 SNPs, 514 pathways, 5379 transcription factors, 187 mature miRNA which regulates candidate genes represented by 1576 differentially expressed transcripts are available in the form of web-genomic resources. Findings were validated by qPCR. This is the first report in carp fish having 32 BCGs, found widely conserved in fish, amphibian, reptile, birds, prototheria, marsupials and placental mammals. This is due to universal mechanism of rhythmicity in response to environment and earth rotation having adaptive and reproductive significance. CONCLUSION This study elucidates evolutionary conserved mechanism of photo-periodism sensing, neuroendocrine secretion, metabolism and yolk synthesis in liver, gonadal maturation, muscular growth with sensory and auditory perception in this fish. Study reveals fish as a good model for research on biological clock besides its relevance in reproductive efficiency enhancement.

Abstract
Background The industrial revolution has resulted in increased synthesis and the introduction of a variety of compounds into the environment and their potentially hazardous effects have been observed in the biota. The present study was aimed to evaluate the potential endocrine-disrupting effects of chronic exposure to the low concentrations of bisphenol S (BPS) in male rats. Methods Weaning male Sprague-Dawley rats (22 days old) were either exposed to water containing 0.1% ethanol for control or different concentrations of BPS (0.5, 5, and 50 μg/L) in drinking water for 48 weeks in the chronic exposure study. After completion of the experimental period, animals were dissected and different parameters (hormone concentrations, histology of testis and epididymis, oxidative stress and level of antioxidant enzymes in the testis, daily sperm production (DSP), and sperm parameters) were determined. Results Results of the present study showed a significant alteration in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and relative reproductive organ weights. Oxidative stress in the testis was significantly elevated while sperm motility, daily sperm production, and the number of sperm in epididymis were reduced. Plasma testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations were reduced and estradiol levels were high in the 50 μg/L-exposed group. Histological observations involved a significant reduction in the epithelial height of the testis along with disrupted spermatogenesis, an empty lumen of the seminiferous tubules, and the caput region of the epididymis. Conclusion These results suggest that exposure to 5 and 50 μg/L of BPS for the chronic duration started from an early age can induce structural changes in testicular tissue architecture and endocrine alterations in the male reproductive system which may lead to infertility in males.

Abstract
In marine ectotherms, reproduction is an energetically expensive process that affects their thermal window tolerance. For most species, the impacts of hyperthermia during gametogenesis have still not been addressed. Our aim was to assess the metabolic response of adult Nodipecten subnodosus scallops to thermal challenges at early development (spring) and advanced gonad maturation (summer). Scallops collected in both seasons were exposed to acute hyperthermia (26 and 30 °C, 24 h), maintaining a group of scallops at acclimation temperature (22 °C) as a control condition. During the summer, relatively low activity of hexokinase (HK), as well as low levels of ATP and GTP were found in the adductor muscle, suggesting a shift in energy investment for reproduction, although arginine phosphate (ArgP) levels were higher in summer scallops. Hyperthermia (30 °C) induced an increased energy expenditure reflected by a transitory enhanced oxygen consumption (VO2) and relatively high activities of HK and arginine kinase (AK). Moreover, a slight decrease in adenylic energy charge (AEC) was partially compensated by a decrease in ArgP. An increase in nucleotide by-products inosine monophosphate (IMP) and hypoxanthine (HX) indicated a thermal stress at 30 °C. Some of the responses to acute hyperthermia were more pronounced at advanced maturation stages (summer scallops), indicating a possible lack of energy balance, with possible implications in animals challenged to global warming scenario.

Abstract
The eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) supports a large aquaculture industry and is a keystone species along the Atlantic seaboard. Native oysters are routinely exposed to a complex mixture of contaminants that increasingly includes pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Unfortunately, the biological effects of chemical mixtures on oysters are poorly understood. Untargeted gas chromatography-mass spectrometry metabolomics was utilized to quantify the response of oysters exposed to fluoxetine, N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, 17α-ethynylestradiol, diphenhydramine, and their mixture. Oysters were exposed to 1 µg/L of each chemical or mixture for 10 d, followed by an 8-d depuration period. Adductor muscle (n = 14/treatment) was sampled at days 0, 1, 5, 10, and 18. Trajectory analysis illustrated that metabolic effects and class separation of the treatments varied at each time point and that, overall, the oysters were only able to partially recover from these exposures post-depuration. Altered metabolites were associated with cellular energetics (i.e., Krebs cycle intermediates), as well as amino acid metabolism and fatty acids. Exposure to these PPCPs also affected metabolic pathways associated with anaerobic metabolism, osmotic stress, and oxidative stress, in addition to the physiological effects of each chemical's postulated mechanism of action. Following depuration, fewer metabolites were altered, but none of the treatments returned them to their initial control values, indicating that metabolic disruptions were long-lasting. Interestingly, the mixture did not directly cluster with individual treatments in the scores plot from partial least squares discriminant analysis, and many of its affected metabolic pathways were not well predicted from the individual treatments. The present study highlights the utility of untargeted metabolomics in developing exposure biomarkers for compounds with different modes of action in bivalves. Abstract
A multidisciplinary approach was applied to explore deeper knowledge about the reproductive biology and ecology of the green mussel (Perna viridis) by interlinking among ecological factors, ingested gut plankton, gonad fatty acid profile, and reproductive traits. Mussels were collected throughout the year from the coastal region of the Bay of Bengal of Bangladesh, and the histological analysis of 242 mussels revealed five stages of gametogenesis with an annual spawning season from January to April. The gonadosomatic index showed a strong correlation with the water quality parameters, ingested gut plankton groups, and gonadal fatty acids, and also displayed prominent effects of seasonality. In all datasets, we performed principal component analysis in which the first two principal components showed that seasonality explained >65% of the variability, and the multivariate spaces of seasonality corresponded to the gonad development. High salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll a, and plankton abundance in the water column were positively correlated with gonad development and the spawning of mussels. During the development stage, mussel ingested more plankton, particularly Bacillariophyceae and Pyrrophyceae, which were an important source of increased n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids content in gonads. Furthermore, gonads accumulated more lipids and saturated fatty acids during the mature and spawning stages, which were probably utilized during embryogenesis and early larval development as energy sources and constituents of the cell membrane. This research provides a model toward a better understanding of reproductive biological traits and how these traits are interrelated with the surrounding environmental variables of the green mussel, which would be helpful in marine aquaculture and the sustainable exploitation of the fishery resources.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neonicotinoid insecticides are widely used in the prevention and control of pests in agriculture and forestry, but they can also affect the development of nontarget economic insects. In order to determine the effects of trace acetamiprid on the development of reproductive system of silkworm, we studied the gonad development and endogenous hormone metabolism in silkworms exposed to trace acetamiprid. RESULT The silkworm showed mild poisoning symptoms after being exposed to trace acetamiprid (0.01 mg L-1 ). After 96 h of acetamiprid exposure, the body weight of silkworm was decreased by 7.67% and the ovary and fallopian tube were abnormally developed. The egg production in adults was decreased by 197 ± 29, and the egg weight was decreased by 0.52 ± 0.01 mg. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis showed that the relative expression levels of ovarian development-related genes Vg, Ovo, Otu, Sxl-S and Sxl-L were downregulated by 0.71, 0.77, 0.47, 0.67 and 0.88-fold, respectively. The transcriptional expression of ecdysone metabolism-related gene (EcR) in the ovary was downregulated by 0.46-fold while the expression of juvenile hormone-related gene (JHBP2) was upregulated by 1.36-fold. In hemolymph of acetamiprid exposed larvae, the content of ecdysone was reduced whereas the content of juvenile hormone was increased. CONCLUSION Trace acetamiprid may cause reproductive dysfunction in silkworms through regulating the metabolism of endogenous hormones. Our study provides a reference for elucidating the mechanism of acetamiprid-induced reproductive disorders in insects. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
This work evaluated the effect of dietary supplementation of probiotic, Pediococcus acidilactici and nucleotide (combined or individual) on reproductive performance including semen quality (motility and density) and egg indices (egg diameter, ovum diameter, absolute fecundity, relative fecundity, gonadosomatic index, hepatosomatic index, fertilization rate, and hatching rate) in goldfish (Carassius auratus). Fish (46.9 ± 2.15 g) were acclimatized and divided into eight experimental diets supplemented with P. acidilactici different concentrations (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3% diet) and nucleotides (0 and 0.5% diet) for 180 days. Female fish fed experimental diets showed significant differences in reproductive parameters as compared to control diet (P < 0.05). Combined diet (probiotic 0.2% and nucleotide) had the highest percentage and duration of sperm motility, absolute fecundity, and fertilization success as compared to other diets (P < 0.05). The significance of the results obtained herein underlines the importance of diet in the reproductive processes, supporting the hypothesis that feed additives could improve gamete quality.

Abstract
This study assessed the long-term toxicity of chlorpyrifos on survival and reproduction of Banded Gourami by using mortality, gonado-somatic index (GSI) and histopathological observations as endpoints. Adult fish were exposed to five different concentrations of chlorpyrifos (0, 15, 50, 150, 500 µg/L) in 15 PVC tanks for 15, 30, 45, 60 and 75 days. Results showed that all male and female fish died after 15 days of 500 µg/L chlorpyrifos exposure. No consistent significant effect was observed for both male and female GSI. Furthermore, results showed dose- and time-dependent histopathological alterations for both ovary and testes. The 60-d No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) for most histopathological alterations of Banded Gourami ovary and testes was 50 μg/L, while 60-d NOEC for mortality of both male and female fish was < 15 μg/L. The results show that the long-term exposure to chlorpyrifos not only affect the reproductive tissues of Banded Gourami at exposure concentrations but also cause their mortality. Future studies should evaluate effects at lower concentrations.

Abstract
Bisphenol A an estrogen-mimic endocrine disrupting chemical, used to manufacture polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins with toxic effects for male reproduction. Due to its toxicity, industries have started to replace it with other bisphenols. In this study, the toxicity of BPA analogues (BPB, BPF and BPS) was evaluated in a chronic study. We investigated whether the chronic exposure to low bisphenols doses affects spermatogenesis with outcomes on oxidative stress and male reproductive system. Male rats (22 day old) were exposed to water containing 0.1% ethanol for control or different concentrations of BPA and its analogues BPB, BPF and BPS (5, 25 and 50 μg/L) in drinking water for 48 weeks. Results of the present study showed a significant alteration in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and relative reproductive organs weights. Oxidative stress in the testis was significantly elevated while sperm motility, Daily sperm production (DSP) and number of sperm in epididymis were reduced. Plasma testosterone, LH and FSH concentrations were reduced and estradiol levels were high in 50 μg/L exposed group. These results suggest that exposure to BPA and its analogues for chronic duration can induce structural changes in testicular tissue and endocrine alterations in the male reproductive system.

Abstract
In order to evaluate the health of Plicopurpura pansa, a species considered vulnerable, a population of this gastropod living in proximity to the port of greatest cargo movement in Mexico was monitored seasonally during 1 year. Morphometric characteristics and sexual proportion were recorded. A macroscopic analysis was carried out to detect malformations and imposex; a histological analysis was performed to evaluate disseminated and gonadal neoplasias; the presence/absence in soft tissues of butyltin species (BTs) as possible contamination agents was also estimated. A total of 508 P. pansa specimens were collected. The largest specimens were obtained in winter. The coefficients of determination inside the port were low (R2 = 0.453). In general, there was a greater proportion of females than males throughout the year. Distinctive foot malformations (tumors) were recorded, but without signs of imposex. The histological examination confirmed the presence of disseminated neoplasias in the foot and gonads of P. pansa in the Port of Manzanillo. The comparative analysis of the morphological and histological features of the studied gastropod population allowed us to recognize impact patterns in relation to proximity to the port. There were high concentrations of monobutyltin (MBT) and greater abundance of tumors in heavier specimens; this was associated with port proximity zones. P. pansa could therefore serve as a sensitive bioindicator of environmental health in marine systems.

Abstract
The edible neogastropod Buccinanops cochlidium from Patagonia, Argentina, reproduces by means of egg capsules attached by the female to its own shell. Gravid females lay an outstanding mean of 500,000 eggs that nurse around 800 embryos, which hatch as crawling juveniles (4mm in shell length) after four months of intracapsular development. This reproductive investment could be expressed as the energy content (EC) estimated for the production of a complete egg mass (33.94±12.85 KJ), representing a conservative estimation of the total EC needed for an adult female to spawn, which is in average ∼12% of the total EC in gravid females. This high maternal investment allows a considerable offspring size, which confers them high survival chances. A translocation of energy stored in the foot during the oviposition season is shown in a relative decrease of ∼10% in the foot EC in respect of the total EC (61.8% in non-gravid females vs. 51.3% in gravid females). Gravid females showed significantly higher body wet mass/shell length index and higher total EC than non-gravid females (266.0±66.4 KJ vs. 184.3±69.6 KJ), suggesting that a body condition threshold is required for females to reproduce. These values represent an energetic surplus of over 40% of the total EC per individual when compared to non-gravid females. Protecting gravid females from fisheries would ensure the sustainability of the resource and must be taken into account when establishing fisheries policies.

Abstract
In this research, one of the most promising scallop species, smooth scallop (Flexopecten glaber) was studied. According to our findings, smooth scallop has beneficial micro and macro minerals, fat and carbohydrate just before the spawning. While the ratios protein, ash and water decreased from autumn to summer, ratio of crude fat increased till reproduction season in late spring and decreased in summer (P<0.05). In digestive glands, aluminum, bromine, cadmium, calcium, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, and zinc were detected more compared to adductor muscles (P<0.05). However; boron, magnesium and potassium were found more in adductor muscles (P<0.05) and there were no significant statistically differences in cobalt and lead (P>0.05). Most of the elements in the both tissues except K and Mg increased till summer. On the other hand, two of the most toxic metals, cadmium and aluminum were mostly accumulated in the digestive gland of smooth scallop. It is recommended that; digestive gland of scallops should be removed before consuming in terms of food safety. Besides, scallops are convenient to be processed, because of easy removal muscle tissue from internal organs.

Abstract
Incorporation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) as biofunctional compounds with feed is an effective way for gonadal maturation without any hazardous effects on animal health, and thus it is possible to save the vulnerable species from the danger of extinction. In the present study sperm quality, level of Ca(2+) concentration in serum, histological structure of the liver and developmental stages of ovary of an endangered fish species, Nandus nandus were investigated for the confirmation of the positive effects of PUFAs in reproduction and gonadal maturation. Fishes were collected from Brahmaputra River, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Treated group was fed 1% squid extracted phospholipid supplemented diet that was mixed with silver carp fish muscle where as controlled group was fed the same except phospholipid. For histology of liver and gonads, samples were dehydrated, cleaned and infiltrated, embedded in paraffin wax and sectioned. After that, the samples were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The photomicrographs of the stained samples were taken by using light microscope. In comparison with the control group, treated group exhibited higher gonadal maturation which resulted in spontaneous spawning. Treated female demonstrated advanced gonadal developmental stages in comparison with the controlled female during different months. During spawning season, lipid granules and normal morphological alteration were observed in case of treated fish liver, whereas less lipid granules with more histological alteration of liver were observed in control group. Serum Ca(2+) concentration in treated female was found significantly higher (P < 0.01) in contrast to the controlled female during the breeding season which was an indicator of the augment of estrogen secretion during ovarian maturation. Better sperm quality, early maturation of oocytes, less histological alteration of liver hepatocytes and spontaneous spawning performances of PUFA-treated fish were as a result of the efficiency of PUFAs in enhancing maturation. The experiment suggests that supplementation of dietary PUFAs improve the spawning performances of fish.
