Abstract
Vinorelbine (VRL), a semi-synthetic vinca alkaloid commonly used in humans with advanced lung cancer, reaches high concentrations in the lung tissue, has proven antineoplastic activity and a low toxicity profile in dogs. Treatment-naïve, client-owned dogs with a cyto/histological diagnosis of advanced pulmonary carcinoma, selected from a laboratory database and previously subjected to imaging, were enrolled in the study. Vinorelbine (15 mg/m2) was administered weekly for 4 weeks and then fortnightly until progressive disease was documented. Staging work-up was repeated by means of diagnostic imaging after the fourth VRL (i.e., 28 days) and monthly thereafter; response to treatment was evaluated according to the RECIST. Toxicity was graded following the VCOGC group. Ten dogs met the inclusion criteria. Partial response was documented in eight dogs. Median time to progression was 88 days (range: 7-112) and median survival time for all dogs was 100 days (range 7-635). The most common side effect was neutropenia. The main limitations of the study were the absence of histological diagnosis in eight cases and the limited number of treated dogs. VRL is well tolerated with an adequate toxicity profile and may be useful in the management of advanced lung tumours if used as a first-line treatment strategy.

Abstract
Canine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (PAC) resembles human lung tumors in never-smokers, but it is rarer than human pulmonary adenocarcinoma. Therefore, research on canine PAC is challenging. In the present study, we successfully established various novel canine PAC cell lines from a single lesion in a dog, including two parent cell lines and fourteen cloned cell lines, and characterized their cellular properties in vitro. Several of these cell lines showed epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-like and/or cancer stem cell (CSCs)-like phenotypes. We additionally assessed the sensitivity of the cells to vinorelbine in vitro. Three clonal lines, two of which showed EMT- and CSC-like phenotypes, were resistant to vinorelbine. Furthermore, we evaluated the expression and activation status of EGFR, HER2, and Ras signaling factors. The findings indicated that the cell lines we established preserved the expression and activation of these factors to varying extents. These novel canine PAC cell lines can be utilized in future research for understanding the pathogenesis and development of treatments for canine PAC.

Abstract
Simple Summary Cancer is a significant cause of suffering and death in domestic cats. In humans, an understanding of the genetics of different types of cancers has become clinically important for all aspects of patient care and forms the basis for most emerging diagnostics and therapies. The field of ‘oncogenomics’ characterises the alterations of cancer-associated genes that are found in tumours. Such a thorough understanding of the oncogenome of human tumours has only been possible due to a high-quality reference genome and an understanding of the genetic variation that can exist between people. Although a high-quality reference genome for cats has only recently been generated, investigations into understanding the genetics of feline cancers have been underway for many years, using a range of different technologies. This review summarises what is currently known of the genetics of both common and rare types of cancer in domestic cats. Drawing attention to our current understanding of the feline oncogenome will hopefully bring this topic into focus and serve as a springboard for more much-needed research into the genetics of cancer in domestic cats. Abstract Cancer is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in domestic cats. In humans, an understanding of the oncogenome of different cancer types has proven critical and is deeply interwoven into all aspects of patient care, including diagnostics, prognostics and treatments through the application of targeted therapies. Investigations into understanding the genetics of feline cancers started with cytogenetics and was then expanded to studies at a gene-specific level, looking for mutations and expression level changes of genes that are commonly mutated in human cancers. Methylation studies have also been performed and together with a recently generated high-quality reference genome for cats, next-generation sequencing studies are starting to deliver results. This review summarises what is currently known of the genetics of both common and rare cancer types in cats, including lymphomas, mammary tumours, squamous cell carcinomas, soft tissue tumours, mast cell tumours, haemangiosarcomas, pulmonary carcinomas, pancreatic carcinomas and osteosarcomas. Shining a spotlight on our current understanding of the feline oncogenome will hopefully serve as a springboard for more much-needed research into the genetics of cancer in domestic cats.

Abstract
A feral, domestic shorthair was evaluated for palliative treatment of a pulmonary mass with secondary pneumonia. Because of the patient's temperament and extent of the mass, tracheobronchoscopy, bronchial stenting, and biopsy were elected, followed by adjuvant radiation therapy. Stent placement across the malignantly obstructed bronchus permitted drainage and recruitment of the infected lung lobe. Uncomplicated radiation therapy, stent extension, and debulking due to tissue ingrowth were subsequently performed. Successful palliation was achieved for 323 days with subsequent progressive pulmonary and liver metastases.

Abstract
Surgical management of neoplastic disease is common in veterinary medicine. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has gained widespread acceptance by veterinary surgeons and is experiencing rapid growth and frequency of use. Many neoplastic diseases in the abdomen and thorax of dogs and cats can be treated as effectively with MIS as with traditional open surgery. Additionally, MIS allows for less invasive options for organ biopsy in cancer patients either for initial diagnosis or for staging to inform prognosis and treatment. Despite the recent increase in MIS, additional research is required to further characterize the benefits to oncology patients and to ensure that surgical oncologic principles and patient outcomes are not compromised by the use of MIS.

Abstract
A 10-year-old, intact female
Yorkshire terrier had multiple pulmonary nodules on thoracic radiography and
ultrasonography with no lesions elsewhere. Computed tomography (CT) and positron emission
tomography and computed tomography (PET-CT) using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) were
performed to identify metastasis and undetected primary tumors. On CT examination,
pulmonary nodules had a hypoattenuating center with thin peripheral enhancement,
suggesting ischemic or necrotizing lesion. In PET-CT at 47 min after intravenous injection
of 11.1 MBq/kg of FDG, the maximum standardized uptake value of each pulmonary nodule was
about from 3.8 to 6.4. There were no abnormal lesions except for four pulmonary nodules on
the CT and PET-CT. Primary lung tumor was tentatively diagnosed, and palliative therapy
using 2 mg/kg tramadol and 2.2 mg/kg carprofen twice per day was applied. After the dog’s
euthanasia due to deteriorated clinical signs and poor prognosis, undifferentiated
pulmonary adenocarcinoma was diagnosed through histopathologic and immunochemistry
examination. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study of CT and
PET-CT features of canine pulmonary adenocarcinoma. In this case, multiple pulmonary
adenocarcinoma could be determined on the basis of FDG PET-CT through screening the
obvious distant metastasis and/or lymph node invasions and excluding unknown primary
tumors.

Abstract
A six-year-old intact female Maltese dog weighing 3.8 kg presented with a history of mild lameness and swelling on both forelimbs. Radiographic and computed tomographic views revealed an extensive periosteal reaction in all four limbs and a large round mass on the right middle lung lobe. A total lobectomy was performed and pulmonary adenosquamous carcinoma was histologically confirmed. A diagnosis of hypertrophic osteopathy (HO) secondary to a lung tumor was made. Periosteal proliferation decreased significantly after surgery; however, there was evidence of dyspnea, mass recurrence, and periosteal reaction three months post-operatively. This is the first case report of pulmonary adenosquamous carcinoma with HO in a dog in which we describe clinical, imaging, surgical, and histological findings.

Abstract
The present study was performed to determine the morphologic change and selected molecular features of spontaneous lung tumors in cats examined at the North Carolina State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Thirty-nine primary lung carcinomas represented 0.69% of all feline cases admitted to the hospital. Most lung tumors were observed in aged cats ( P < .0001), and no sex predilection was found ( P < .4241). Persian cats with pulmonary carcinoma were overrepresented in the data set, at least 4 times more frequently than other breeds. The histologic tumor types included adenocarcinoma (64.1%), bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (20.5%), and adenosquamous carcinoma (15.4%). Metastasis was observed in about 80% of 39 cases, with decreasing order of intrapulmonary metastasis, intrathoracic carcinomatosis, regional lymph nodes, and distant organs, including digits. The size of the largest tumor mass was significantly associated with metastatic potential ( P < .001). Based on immunohistochemistry, more than 80% (20 of 24) of feline lung tumors were positively labeled with either surfactant protein A or thyroid transcription factor 1. Epidermal growth factor receptor mutant and p53 proteins were detected in approximately 20% (5 of 24) and 25% (6 of 24) of the feline lung tumor cases, respectively. Limited sequencing analysis of K-ras and p53 genes in 3 selected normal and neoplastic lung tissues did not reveal any alteration. Results indicate that primary lung carcinomas are rare but aggressive tumors in cats, thereby warranting further studies on molecular carcinogenesis.

Abstract
A 12-year-old fox-terrier dog presented with forelimb lameness of 3-weeks duration. Ultrasonography revealed a mass within the thoracic wall and osteolysis of the left third rib. A squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed by cytological examination of an ultrasound-guided fine needle aspirate of this mass. As a result of the diagnosis of neoplasia, the dog was euthanatized. Necropsy revealed a solitary expansile mass within the left cranial lung lobe, and a mass within the adjacent thoracic wall. Thickening of the pleura between the two masses was visible, although adhesions were not present. Histology of both masses revealed a well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first detailed description of direct invasion of the thoracic wall by a canine lung tumour.

Abstract
A 15-year-old, female Siamese cat presented with multiple cavitary lung lesions on thoracic radiographs. This was confirmed histologically to be a well-differentiated bronchioloalveolar carcinoma. To the authors' knowledge, this radiographic pattern has not previously been reported in association with bronchioloalveolar carcinoma in cats.

Abstract
Thoracic radiographs of nine cats with confirmed bronchoalveolar carcinoma (BAC) were reviewed retrospectively. Radiographic appearance of BAC was divided into three categories: mixed bronchoalveolar pattern, ill-defined alveolar mass, or mass with cavitation. In addition to these radiographic signs, all nine cats had evidence of some form of bronchial disease. Cavitary lesions were the most common finding (n = 5). In addition, three cats in this category had diffuse bronchointerstitial opacity and one cat had focal peribronchial cuffing. Five cats had either a mixed bronchoalveolar pattern with bronchiectasis (n = 3) or an ill-defined alveolar mass with peribronchial cuffing (n = 2). One cat had both a mixed bronchoalveolar pattern and a cavitary mass. Each of these nine cats had some form of bronchial disease (bronchointerstitial pattern, peribronchial cuffing, or bronchiectasis), which aids in the radiographic diagnosis of bronchoalveolar carcinoma and may represent airway metastasis.

Abstract
In the period 1993-1998, digital carcinomas in 64 cats were examined. In all animals primary complaints were painful digit(s). Eight cats had a primary squamous cell carcinoma which involved one digit or two adjacent digits of one leg. Fifty-six cats had metastases of a pulmonary carcinoma in the digits, and in general multiple digits of different legs were involved. In many of these cats metastases also occurred in other organs, including the skin and muscles. No primary sweat gland carcinomas of the digits were seen. Primary squamous cell carcinomas of the digits were characterized by cornification and the absence of PAS-positive cells, PAS-positive secretory material. Immunohistochemically, these neoplasms stained negative with the monoclonal antibody CAM 5.2 directed against Keratin 8 (K 8). The metastases of pulmonary carcinomas to the digits showed one or more of the following histological features: goblet cells, ciliated epithelial cells, PAS-positive cells or lakes, and/or a PAS-positive lining of luminal membranes and no cornification. Immunohistochemically, they showed positive staining for CAM 5.2 (K8). Thoracic radiographs from three cats with a primary squamous cell carcinoma showed no abnormalities, whereas all cases of metastases from a pulmonary carcinoma to the digits available for follow-up showed evidence of a primary pulmonary carcinoma on radiography and/or postmortem examination (25 out of 56). The conclusion of this study was that most carcinomas in the digits of cats were metastases of a primary pulmonary carcinoma (87.5%). Primary squamous cell carcinomas occurred infrequently. The prognosis of metastases of a pulmonary carcinoma in the digits is poor with an average survival time of 4.9 weeks, in contrast to 29.5 weeks in cats with a squamous cell carcinoma. These data stress the importance of taking thoracic radiographs of cats with digital tumours before surgical intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify possible prognostic factors for survival time in cats with a primary lung tumor after surgical excision. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective clinical study. ANIMAL POPULATION 21 cats with histologically confirmed primary lung tumors removed surgically. METHODS Medical records for cats treated between 1979 and 1994 at 14 participating veterinary referral hospitals were reviewed. RESULTS After surgical resection and recovery, 18 cats died from metastatic disease with a median survival time of 115 days (range, 13 to 1,526 days). Three cats were lost to follow-up at 119 days, 251 days, and 410 days after the surgical procedure. Contingency table analysis to determine if an association existed between clinical findings (breed, age, gender, body weight, clinical signs, duration of clinical signs, and radiographic findings) or histological features and survival time was performed. Only histological morphology of the primary lung tumor showed a significant association with survival time. Twelve cats with moderately differentiated tumors had a significantly longer survival time (median, 698 days; range, 19 to 1,526 days) than the nine cats with poorly differentiated tumors (median, 75 days; range, 13 to 634 days). CONCLUSIONS Surgical resection of a solitary primary lung tumor in cats is indicated. CLINICAL RELEVANCE A poor prognosis for long-term survival is warranted for those cats having a poorly differentiated primary lung tumor.

Abstract
Information has been presented to assist veterinary practitioners in obtaining and interpreting cytology specimens from the respiratory tract. The various cytologic techniques are rapid, economical, and relatively noninvasive. Cytologic examination of the respiratory tract may provide a definitive diagnosis or information for improved case management until more complex diagnostic procedures are performed.
