The incidence of sheep strike by Lucilia sericata on sheep farms in Britain: a simulation model

Evaluation of dicyclanil (CLiKZiN®) treatment for the early-season protection of ewes against blowfly strike

Protecting sheep against early season myiasis (strike) is a significant problem in northern temperate farming systems, where fully-fleeced ewes and early-season lambs approaching market weight, are at high initial risk. Here, the prevention of early-season blowfly strike in ewes was examined on matched commercial sheep farms in south west England, using a new formulation of dicyclanil (CLiKZiN(®) pour on) with a short withdrawal period of 7 days. The ewes on seven farms received a prophylactic treatment with dicyclanil (CLiKZiN 1.25% pour-on suspension) in April 2011; ewes on three control farms received no treatment. The lambs at all farms remained untreated. No adverse reactions to treatment were recorded. On the treatment farms no ewe strikes were recorded between April and June (10 weeks). On control farms, there were 16 strike cases in ewes over the same period, giving a cumulative incidence of 31 cases per 1000 ewes. On the treatment farms only one lamb was struck whereas at the control farms 10 lamb strikes were recorded. The data demonstrate that CLiKZiN was highly effective at protecting ewes against early season strike-challenge.

Faecal soiling and gastrointestinal helminth infection in lambs

The accumulation of faeces in the wool of the breech area (tail, perineum and anus) of lambs, known as faecal soiling, has been shown to be one of the major factors predisposing sheep to blowfly strike. However, the causes of faecal soiling of lambs in the UK are not clearly understood. Hence, in this investigation, the relationships between faecal soiling, gastrointestinal parasitic nematode infection and resultant diarrhoea were examined in a longitudinal study of 200 lambs at two farms in south-west England. Faecal egg counts, pasture worm burdens, faecal soiling and growth rates were recorded for individually tagged lambs over the summer of 2003. Grass growth and nutritional composition (protein and fibre) and weather data were also recorded over this period. Analysis using linear mixed models showed that faecal soiling was associated with higher strongyle-type egg counts, longer periods since worming, lower live-weights, female gender, lower faecal consistency and pasture quality. The data indicate that dag scoring, especially in mid- to late summer, could be used as a rapid, non-invasive technique for selecting animals, particularly lambs, with high faecal egg counts for selective drenching to reduce the incidence of anthelmintic resistance. Selective drenching of lambs with high dag scores would also be expected to aid in the control of blowfly strike.

Estimating the incidence of fly myiases in Australian sheep flocks: development of a weather-driven regression model

The blowfly, Lucilia cuprina Wiedemann (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is the primary myiasis (strike) fly of sheep in Australia. Most strike occurs in the anal-perineum area (crutch), but strike to the neck, shoulders, back and withers (body) is also important. Regression analysis was used to determine the extent to which the weekly incidence of flystrike can be explained by variations in fly abundance and/or recent changes in weather, pasture conditions or flock management. Strike and flock management data were collected by questionnaire surveys of 30-60 sheep properties in each of three major sheep-producing areas in southeastern Australia, namely, Gunning (southern New South Wales), Inverell (northern New South Wales) and Flinders Island (Bass Strait). After using simulation modelling to remove effects due to shearing, crutching and/or insecticide treatment, pasture growth index was found to be the most important explanatory variable affecting the incidence of all forms of myiasis. Others were average weekly air temperature, the amount and frequency of rainfall, relative humidity, dung quality index and a factor denoting seasonal effects. Together, these variables accounted for 48.4% of the variation in body strike, 56.8% of that in crutch strike and 51.9% of that in other forms of strike. Prediction was improved by the inclusion of additional lagged variables describing previous strike, fly abundance and fly activity. With these additions, the variation explained increased to 60.4% for body strike, 68.0% for crutch strike and 58.3% for other strikes.

Development and validation of a simulation model for blowfly strike of sheep

A comprehensive simulation model for sheep blowfly strike due to Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), which builds on previously published versions but also incorporates important new empirical data, is used to explain patterns of lamb and ewe strike recorded on 370 farms in south-west, south-east and central England and Wales. The model is able to explain a significant percentage of the variance in lamb strike incidence in all four regions, and ewe strike in three of the four regions. The model is able to predict the start of seasonal blowfly strike within one week in three of the four regions for both ewes and lambs, and within 3 weeks in the fourth region. It is concluded that the accuracy of the model will allow it to be used to assess the likely efficacy of new control techniques and the effects of changes in existing husbandry practices on strike incidence. The model could also be used to give sheep farmers advance warning of approaching strike problems. However, the ability to forecast future strike patterns is dependent on the accuracy of the weather projections; the more long-term the forecast, the more approximate the prediction is likely to be. When applied on a regional basis, model forecasts indicate expected average patterns of strike incidence and may not therefore be appropriate for individual farmers whose husbandry practices differ substantially from the average.

Myiasis in sheep in The Netherlands

In 1999, among 164 randomly selected Dutch sheep farmers, a questionnaire was carried out to estimate the prevalence of myiasis in sheep and to investigate factors associated with the occurrence of myiasis. The total number of sheep and/or lambs on the reference date 1 August 1999 was 12,200: 5243 ewes, 225 rams, 3393 ewe- and 3339 ram lambs. On 86 (52.4%) of the farms 349 (2.9%) of all sheep and/or lambs contracted myiasis, of which two died. Myiasis was seen significantly more frequently on farms with over 25 ewes compared to smaller farms. Cases of myiasis were detected from April to September, with a peak (47.1%) in August. Occurrence of myiasis was most frequently associated with hot and humid weather and was mainly observed (69.1%) in the area around the tail.Ewes and ewe lambs had significantly more myiasis when compared with rams and ram lambs. There was no relationship with tail docking, with breed, with the time of shearing, with the kind of soil (clay, sand, etc.), with the environment (bush, trees, water, etc.), with the type of treatment (pour on, dipping, spraying), the used insecticides (synthetic pyrethroïds, diazinon, cyromazin, etc.), the number of preventive treatments, the time of treatment or the number of observations on the herd (once a day, once a week, etc.).

Use of interpolated climatic parameters to predict risk of blowfly-strike in Queensland sheep flocks

The risk of blowfly-strike was investigated in 160 sheep flocks in Queensland, Australia. The association between blowfly-strike--measured by the use of pesticides in response to flystrike reported by flock managers during the period 1994-1997--and interpolated rainfall and temperature data was examined using survival analysis and stepwise regression. The statistical model explaining the most variation in risk of blowfly-strike included average maximum temperature and its second-order polynomial 4 months preceding flystrike. The model was validated using reports of blowfly-strike from 87 flocks during the period 1997-1999 (collected using the same method as for model construction) and interpolated maximum temperature data. Although there was overlap of 95% confidence intervals derived for model coefficients estimated using both construction and validation data sets, false-negative and false-positive misclassification percentages were 33.3 and 53.3%, respectively. False-negative misclassification was greater for flocks located in southern Queensland, and false-positive misclassification was greater for northern Queensland flocks.

Forecasting blowfly strike in Queensland sheep flocks

The occurrence of blowfly strike between 1993 and 1999, derived from the reported use of pesticides for flystrike control, was investigated in 247 sheep flocks in Queensland, Australia using autoregressive techniques. Although there was a small increase (0. 0016 per year) in flystrike incidence during the study period, this long-term linear trend was not significant (p=0.53). The occurrence of flystrike was best described by an autoregressive model that included flystrike in the previous 2 months: flystrike(t)=0.0170+0. 0392 flystrike(t-1)+0.3589 flystrike(t-2). Flystrike was associated with the southern oscillation index (SOI). The SOI is based on barometric pressure readings and is associated with periods of below- (negative SOI) and above-average (positive SOI) rainfall in northern Australia. Flystrike incidence was significantly (p=0.03) greater in months in which the SOI was positive. The strongest correlation (r=0.33) was found between flystrike incidence and the SOI 2 months previously. Using the SOI, the best-fitting autoregressive model describing flystrike was flystrike(t)=0.0238+0. 3033 flystrike(t-2)+0.0009 SOI(t-2). The incidence of flystrike was significantly (p<0.05) correlated with average monthly radiation (r=0.26), but not with average monthly maximum and minimum temperature, total rainfall, evaporation and vapour pressure. The best-fitting autoregressive model describing flystrike occurrence based on these variables was flystrike(t)=-0.0259+0.3610 flystrike(t-2)+0.0022 radiation(t). Results suggest that a useful early-warning system could be developed based on the correlation between flystrike incidence and the SOI up to 2 months previously. Such attempts to forecast flystrike may assist decision-making by wool producers with respect to flystrike control options, leading to more efficient control of blowfly strike in their industry.

The effects of oviposition aggregation on the incidence of sheep blowfly strike

The distribution of a parasite population within its natural host population can have a significant influence on the dynamics of both the host and parasite populations. The majority of parasite species are typically distributed in an aggregated manner within the host population, leaving most hosts lightly infected and a few hosts supporting very large parasite burdens. This paper presents a consideration of the effects of aggregation on the incidence of ovine cutaneous myiasis caused by the sheep blowfly, Lucilia sericata (Meigen). Using simulation analysis, the mechanisms causing larval aggregation are included in the model, allowing the consequences for control to be investigated. By explicitly incorporating host susceptibility, it becomes apparent that early in the season, strategies targeting the blowfly population may prove more effective in suppressing strike levels, whereas later in the season, treatment of the sheep population may be more beneficial. The analysis also shows that the greater the degree of aggregation, the fewer sheep that become struck and, hence, suggests that increasing the heterogeneity in susceptibility amongst a flock of sheep restricts strikes to relatively few sheep. Providing the highly-susceptible sheep could be identified, concentrating strikes on a low number of sheep would allow fewer sheep to be treated, leading to a more efficient means of controlling the blowfly population and suppressing strike.

The effect of farm management strategies on the incidence of sheep strike in Britain: a simulation analysis

A deterministic model is used to simulate the seasonal incidence of sheep myiasis (strike) on farms in Britain and to explore the effects of different farm management strategies on strike incidence. The model is based on two sub-components: the seasonal pattern of abundance of the primary agent of sheep myiasis in northwest Europe, the blowfly Lucilia sericata and the range of factors known to influence ewe and lamb susceptibility to strike. The results of these simulations show that familiar farm management strategies, such as shearing, reduction in scouring caused by endoparasitic worms and insecticide use can have an important role in the reduction of strike incidence in ewes and lambs. However, the effectiveness of these techniques can be highly dependent of their timing in relation to seasonal changes in blowfly abundance and the effects of temperature and rainfall.
