Abstract
BACKGROUND Retained placenta (RP) is a prevalent disorder in cattle with many health-related and economic costs for the farm owners. Its etiology has not been clarified yet and there is no definite therapy for this disorder. In this study we conducted RNA-seq, hematologic and histologic experiments to survey the causes of RP development. METHODS Blood samples were collected from 4 RP and 3 healthy cows during periparturtion period for hematological assessments followed by placentome sampling within 30 min after parturition. Cows were grouped as RP and control in case the placenta was retained or otherwise expelled, respectively. Total RNA was extracted from placentome samples followed by RNA-sequencing. RESULTS We showed 240 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the RP and control groups. Enrichment analyzes indicated immune system and lipid metabolism as prominent over- and under-represented pathways in RP cows, respectively. Hormonal assessments showed that estradiol-17β (E2) was lower and cortisol tended to be higher in RP cows compared to controls at the day of parturition. Furthermore, histologic experiment showed that villi-crypt junctions remain tighter in RP cows compared to controls and the crypts layer seemed thicker in the placentome of RP cows. Complete blood cell (CBC) parameters were not significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSION Overall, DEGs derived from expression profiling and these genes contributed to enrichment of immune and lipid metabolism pathways. We suggested that E2 could be involved in development of RP and the concentrations of P4 and CBC counts periparturition might not be a determining factor.

Abstract
The complex etiology and pathogenesis of retained placenta (RP) bring huge challenges for researchers and clinical veterinarians in investigating the pathogenesis and treatment schedule. This study aims to investigate the pathogenesis of RP in dairy cows by plasma metabolomics. As subjects, 10 dairy cows with RP and 10 healthy dairy cows were enrolled according to strict enrollment criteria. Imbalanced antioxidant capacity, reduced Th1/Th2 cytokine ratio, and deregulation of total bilirubin (T-bil), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and reproductive hormones were shown in dairy cows with RP by detecting biochemical indicators, oxidation and antioxidant markers, and cytokines in serum. Plasma metabolites were detected and analyzed by a liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) system coupled with multivariate statistical analysis software. A total of 23 potential biomarkers were uncovered in the plasma of dairy cows with RP. The metabolic pathways involved in these potential biomarkers are interconnected, and the conversion, utilization, and excretion of nitrogen were disturbed in dairy cows with RP. Moreover, these potential biomarkers are involved in the regulation of antioxidant capacity, inflammation, and autocrine or paracrine hormone. All of these findings suggest that an imbalance of these potential biomarkers might be responsible for the imbalanced antioxidant capacity, reduced Th1/Th2 cytokine ratio, and deregulation of reproductive hormones in dairy cows with RP. The regulation of metabolic pathways involved in these potential biomarkers represents a promising therapeutic strategy for RP.

Abstract
Embryonic mortality (EM) is a major factor limiting reproductive efficiency in cattle, and despite negative connotations related to reproductive performance, prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) is capable of being released by the uterus by Day 30 of gestation. Therefore, the objective was to evaluate differences in PGF2α release after an oxytocin challenge between cows with high circulating concentrations of pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) vs low PAG because of the association of increased PAG concentrations with pregnancy success. At Day 30 of gestation, pregnant cows were divided into oxytocin treatment (OT; n = 13) and control (CON; n = 12) groups. Treatment cows were further subdivided by circulating PAG concentration (high PAG, n = 7; and low PAG, n = 6). Blood samples were collected every 30 min beginning 1 h before oxytocin administration and continuing for 4 h. Prostaglandin F2α metabolite (PGFM), progesterone, estradiol-17β (E2), and PAG concentrations were quantified. The peak concentration of PGFM occurred 2 h after oxytocin injection in treatment animals and returned to baseline levels by 4 h. No correlations were observed between PAG and PGFM, progesterone, or E2 concentrations (P > 0.05). There was no difference in initial or final PGFM concentrations between groups (P > 0.05). Progesterone and E2 concentrations decreased in cows after treatment of oxytocin (P < 0.05); however, only progesterone returned to basal concentrations by the end of the sampling period. In summary, cows with high vs low PAG concentrations at Day 30 of gestation have a similar PGFM response to oxytocin challenge.

Abstract
Retention of fetal membranes (RFM) in bovines not only lowers fertility and productivity but also leads to significant economic loss to the dairy farms. The present study compared peripartum progesterone, estradiol, cortisol, Prostaglandin F2 metabolite (PGFM) and relaxin concentrations in crossbred cows with normal parturition (NP) and with RFM. Blood samples were collected from 33 dairy cows at weekly interval from 30 days prepartum till 7th day before calving, followed by every alternate days till calving and 1st and 2nd day postpartum. Significantly higher plasma cortisol concentrations was observed between day 3 prepartum and day 2 postpartum in RFM cows (n=6) compared to NP cows (n=6). Plasma estradiol level was significantly lower in RFM group than in NP group on the day of calving while progesterone concentrations did not differ between the groups. In RFM cows, PGFM level was significantly lower on day 1 and day 2 postpartum compared to NP cows. On the day of calving and on day 1 postpartum, relaxin concentration was significantly (P<0.05) higher in NP cows compared to RFM cows. The ROC analysis, commonly used for development of diagnostic threshold value, revealed that cows with cortisol concentration above 7.35 ng/ml and PGFM concentration below 1,072 pg/ml on day-1 were associated with 5.99 times higher risk of RFM. It may be inferred that peripartum plasma cortisol and PGFM concentrations may be useful for identification of crossbred cows at the risk of developing RFM.

Abstract
In bovine placentomes, the inflammatory response is considered important for the detachment of the fetal membrane from the caruncle after parturition. Glucocorticoids, a trigger of the onset of parturition, facilitate functional maturation of placentomes via prostaglandin (PG) and estrogen production in cattle. This study investigated how exogeneous glucocorticoids, which exert immunosuppressive effects, affect placental inflammation at parturition. Placentomes were collected immediately after spontaneous or induced parturition. Parturition was conventionally induced using PGF2α or dexamethasone or with a combination of triamcinolone acetonide and high-dose betamethasone (TABET treatment). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) array analysis indicated that 9/13 C-C motif chemokine ligands (CCLs) were upregulated > two-fold in spontaneous parturition, with CCL2 and CCL8 being highly expressed. The expressions of CCL2, CCL8, C-C motif chemokine receptor 1 (CCR1), and CCR5 in caruncles were significantly higher in spontaneous parturition than in induced parturition. Although the clinical dose of dexamethasone did not influence the expression of these CCLs and CCRs, TABET treatment increased CCR1 expression. CCL8, CCR1, CCR2, and CCR5 were localized in the caruncular epithelial cells. CCR2 was also localized in the epithelial cells of the cotyledonary villi. This study is the first report to reveal the disruption in CCL and CCR expression in bovine placentomes at induced parturition. Enhanced glucocorticoid exposure for the induction of parturition may upregulate CCR1 expression in placentomes, but the treatment does not adequately promote CCL expression. Additionally, immunohistochemistry suggested that the CCL-CCR system is involved in the functional regulation of maternal and fetal epithelial cells in placentomes at parturition.

Abstract
In the latter half of gestation in the mare, progesterone concentrations decline to near undetectable levels while other 5α-reduced pregnanes are elevated. Of these, 5α-dihydroprogesterone and allopregnanolone have been reported to have important roles in either pregnancy maintenance or fetal quiescence. During this time, the placenta is necessary for pregnane metabolism, with the enzyme 5α-reductase being required for the conversion of progesterone to 5α-dihydroprogesterone. The objectives of this study were to assess the effects of a 5α-reductase inhibitor, dutasteride on pregnane metabolism (pregnenolone, progesterone, 5α-dihydroprogesterone, 20α-hydroxy-5α-pregnan-3-one, 5α-pregnane-3β,20α-diol and allopregnanolone), to determine circulating dutasteride concentrations and to assess effects of dutasteride treatment on gestational parameters. Pregnant mares (n = 5) received dutasteride (0.01 mg/kg/day, IM) and control mares (n = 4) received vehicle alone from 300 to 320 days of gestation or until parturition. Concentrations of dutasteride, pregnenolone, progesterone, 5α-dihydroprogesterone, 20α-hydroxy-5α-pregnan-3-one, 5α-pregnane-3β,20α-diol, and allopregnanolone were evaluated via liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Samples were analyzed as both days post treatment and as days prepartum. No significant treatment effects were detected in pregnenolone, 5α-dihydroprogesterone, 20α-hydroxy-5α-pregnan-3-one, 5α-pregnane-3β,20α-diol or allopregnanolone for either analysis; however, progesterone concentrations were increased (P < 0.05) sixfold in dutasteride-treated mares compared to control mares. Dutasteride concentrations increased in the treated mares, with a significant correlation (P < 0.05) between dutasteride concentrations and pregnenolone or progesterone concentrations. Gestational length and neonatal outcomes were not significantly altered in dutasteride-treated mares. Although 5α-reduced metabolites were unchanged, these data suggest an accumulation of precursor progesterone with inhibition of 5α-reductase, indicating the ability of dutasteride to alter progesterone metabolism.

Abstract
15-Hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (HPGD) plays a key role in prostaglandins (PGs) catabolism. Its expression and activity appear to be regulated by progesterone (P4). We investigated the HPGD mRNA-expression and protein localization in placentomes and interplacental uterine sites throughout gestation (Study I), and after fetal membranes retention (RFM) compared with normally delivered fetal membranes (DFM) (Study II). Furthermore, we analyzed the influence of aglepristone (AP), dexamethasone (GC) or cloprostenol (CP), on HPGD expression in bovine placentomes (Study III). Tissues from late gestation (D272) and at normal term (NT) served as controls. HPGD was highest in all sites at the beginning of pregnancy and at (NT). Following induced parturition HPGD was lower after (AP) and (GC) compared with (NT), and was similar in RFM and DFM. Placentomes stained primarily in fetal compartments; interplacentomal signals were observed in endometrial glandular and luminal epithelium. Results indicate that HPGD may play a role during establishment and termination of gestation.

Abstract
Postpartum diseases are common in dairy cows, and their incidence contributes to reduced fertility and increased risk of culling, making their prevention and management extremely important. Reproductive efficiency has a major impact on economic success of any dairy production unit. Optimizing reproductive efficiency contributes to overall efficiency of production units, minimizing environmental impacts and contributing to sustainability of food production. Additionally, control of reproductive diseases is important for maintenance of health and welfare of dairy cows; for minimizing use of antibiotics; and ensuring a wholesome, safe, and nutritious product.

Abstract
Retention of fetal membranes (RFM), where the fetal placenta is not expelled within 8-12 hr after calving, lowers bovine productivity and fertility, resulting in significant economic loss to the dairy industry. Several risk factors that predispose an individual to RFM are known, but a unifying pathogenesis remains elusive due to its multifactorial etiology. Fetal membrane separation and expulsion after parturition involves structural and immunological changes of the bovine placentome that are governed predominantly by steroid hormones and the prostaglandin milieu of late pregnancy and parturition. Maturation of the placentome, a gradual and concerted event of late gestation, is likely initiated by the up-regulation of fetal major histocompatibility complex class I in the interplacentomal region-which increases the apoptosis of binucleate and other trophoblastic cells, the degradation of collagen in the extracellular matrix by matrix metalloproteinases, and an influx of phagocytic leukocytes. Shear force further distorts the crypt architecture of the mature placentomes when they are forced against the fetus during the second stage of labor. Cotyledon dehiscence from the caruncular crypts is completed following fetal expulsion as a result of acute shrinkage of the cotelydonary villi as well as reduced perfusion to the caruncle; the secundinae is expelled by uterine contractions. A better understanding of placentomal maturation, intra-partum, and immediate postpartum changes of the placentome should help develop strategies for the treatment and prevention of RFM. The present review proposes a model of placentome maturation and separation of fetal membranes in the dairy cow.

Abstract
The objectives were to evaluate the effects of injectable vitamin E during the last 3 wk prepartum on the incidence of retained fetal membranes (RFM) and reproductive performance. Dairy cows (n=890), 390 Holsteins (132 nulliparous and 258 parous) and 500 crossbred Holstein × Gyr (199 nulliparous and 301 parous), from 3 dairy farms in Brazil were assigned to the study. In all 3 farms, from October to March, prepartum cows grazed tropical grasses and received 2 kg/d of a mixture of finely ground corn, soybean meal, and minerals and vitamins. From April to September prepartum cows received a total mixed ration composed of corn silage, finely ground corn, soybean meal, and minerals and vitamins. During the prepartum period, cows were fed 280 (farm 1), 390 (farm 2), and 480 IU (farm 3) of supplemental vitamin E per day, and throughout postpartum, cows were fed 370 (farm 1), 500 (farm 2), and 600 (farm 3) IU of supplemental vitamin E. Within each farm, cows were randomly assigned to remain as untreated controls or to receive 3 i.m. injections of 1,000 IU each of dl-α-tocopherol administered at 19.2 ± 4.3, 12.9 ± 3.3, and 6.2 ± 2.9 d before calving (VitE). Blood was sampled from 141 cows immediately before enrollment to determine the α-tocopherol and cholesterol statuses. Blood was also sampled and analyzed for concentrations of cortisol and nonesterified fatty acids in the last 3 wk of gestation. The serum concentration of α-tocopherol or α-tocopherol:cholesterol ratio did not differ between treatments and averaged 2.97 ± 0.10 μg/mL and 4.46 ± 0.16 × 10(-3), respectively. In total, 53.2% of the cows had an inadequate concentration of serum α-tocopherol based on the 3.0 μg/mL cut-off for adequacy. The risk of RFM decreased as serum α-tocopherol increased. Milk production did not differ between controls and VitE cows. Treatment with injectable α-tocopherol decreased RFM from 20.1 to 13.5%, decreased incidence of stillbirth from 14.9 to 6.8%, and tended to decrease death by 200 d postpartum. VitE cows tended to have improved pregnancy per insemination at first AI (36.7 vs. 30.1%) because of decreased pregnancy loss from 31 to 62 d of gestation (12.5 vs. 20.5%). Despite a similar insemination rate, VitE cows had 22% greater pregnancy rate than control cows. Cows receiving vitamin E had decreased circulating cortisol and nonesterified fatty acids around calving. In summary, when cows were fed limited amounts of supplemental vitamin E, 28 to 48% of the recommendations, prepartum supplementation with injectable α-tocopherol decreased incidence of RFM and improved reproduction.

Abstract
The contribution of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) to timely discharge of the placenta from bovine uterus at parturition is yet inconclusive, partly because of the presence of multiple MMP forms in situ. In the current study, the expression of different gelatinase subtypes on non-retaining placentas of Holstein cows was fingerprinted by using gelatin zymography. Different topographic regions on the placenta were measured separately, including the placentome-like structure and the fetal and maternal sides of interplacentomal placenta, all sampled from the central and peripheral areas of the placenta, respectively. The spontaneously ruptured umbilical cords were cross-sectioned as fetus end, middle and placenta end also for separate measurement. Body fluids including blood samples from the parturient cows, their neonatal calves and umbilical cord, as well as fetal fluids and the first colostrum were measured concomitantly. Results showed multiple forms of gelatinases subtypes in the placenta tissues and body fluids, including neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL)-MMP-9 complex, both the latent and active forms of MMP-2 and MMP-9; of them, the latent forms were much more abundantly and frequently expressed than the active forms. NGAL-MMP-9 complex was more prevalently present in the body fluids than in the placenta tissues. No distinguishable pattern of the expression of any gelatinase subtype was observed among the placentome-like structure, interplacentomal placenta and umbilical cord, or between fetal and maternal sides. Nonetheless, for interplacentomal placenta, proMMP-9 expression was higher in the central than in the peripheral area. In addition, proMMP-2 expression was higher in the rupture end (fetus end) than the placenta end of the umbilical cord. In conclusion, the current validated gelatin zymography detected a gradient proMMP-9 expression on the non-retaining placenta of cows in reverse to the proximity to the umbilical insertion point, and a gradient proMMP-2 expression on a section of the umbilical cord in reverse to the proximity to the rupture site, suggesting roles played by gelatinases in normal discharge of the placenta at term.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in plasma concentrations of estrone sulfate (E(1)S) and estradiol-17beta (E(2)beta) during the peripartum period (from day 10 prepartum to day 1 postpartum) associated with and without retention of fetal membranes (RFM) in Holstein-Friesian cattle (n=42). Plasma samples were analyzed for E(1)S and E(2)beta by ELISA. All parturitions were spontaneous and normal. Of 38 cattle delivering singletons, 29 had no RFM (singleton-normal group) and nine had RFM for more than 12 h (singleton-RFM group). Four cows gave birth to twins, and each twin had its own fetal membrane (FM). Two twinning cows expelled both FMs normally within 12 h (twin-normal group). In the remaining 2 twinning cows (twin-RFM group), the FM was expelled normally for one twin (first), while the FM of the other (second) was retained. There were no significant differences in the E(1)S concentrations or their increments from the concentrations on the preceding day between the normal and RFM groups of singleton cows on any peripartum day. The mean plasma E(2)beta concentrations on each day from day 10 to day 3 prepartum were significantly lower (P<0.05) in the singleton-RFM group compared with the singleton-normal group; however, on days 2 and 1 prepartum, the increments in the E(2)beta concentrations from the concentrations on the preceding days were significantly higher (P<0.05) in the singleton-RFM group than in the singleton-normal group. Thus, the plasma E(1)S concentrations just before parturition may not be associated with RFM. In the cows with RFM, the lower plasma E(2)beta concentrations that were found prior to day 2 prepartum may have been associated with immature placentomes, and the rapid rise in plasma E(2) beta within 1 to 2 days prior to calving may have produced asynchrony of placental and/or fetal maturation in relation to calving, thus resulting in RFM.

Abstract
The relationship between the mRNA expression of proteolytic and steroidogenic enzymes in bovine placentomes was examined. Caruncle and cotyledon tissues were collected every 6 hr after spontaneous parturition until the fetal membranes were released. Based on the time of fetal membrane release after parturition, the specimens were classified as follows: (1) the early group, in which the fetal membranes were released within 6 hr after parturition; and (2) the late group, in which the fetal membranes were released 6-12 hr after parturition. The placentomes from a slaughterhouse were additionally collected as samples for the examination of enzymes during the gestation period. The mRNA expression of steroidogenic enzymes in the cotyledon was observed to be higher than that in caruncle tissues; however, the mRNA expression patterns of P450scc and StAR tended to be similar in both placental tissues. On the other hand, although the expression levels of TIMP-2 mRNA in both caruncle and cotyledon tissues were similar, during gestation and postpartum the expression levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 mRNA were approximately 10 times higher in caruncle than in cotyledon tissue. Marked contrasting changes in mRNA expression patterns between pre- and postpartum periods were observed for MMP-2 and MMP-9 in caruncle tissues and for MMP-9 and TIMP-2 in cotyledon tissues. The present study provides the first evidence that MMP-2, MMP-9, and TIMP-2 mRNAs are expressed in bovine placentomes during the gestational and postpartum periods and suggests that these enzymes, in conjunction with steroidogenic enzymes, mediate fetal membrane detachment after parturition.

Abstract
The bovine intercaruncular uterine wall expresses steroid hormone receptors throughout pregnancy. Concentrations of specific hormones undergo massive changes during the peripartal period and modulate the synthesis of their own receptors. This is well documented for the placentome, but respective data concerning the intercaruncular uterine wall are completely lacking. Thus, intercaruncular uterine wall segments from cows (I) being 8 and 9 months pregnant (slaughtered cows) and (II) cows undergoing a premature caesarean section 269-282 days after artificial insemination (AI) with (IIa, b) or without (IIc) induction of birth with PGF(2alpha) agonist or (III) receiving a caesarean section during severe dystocia (n=6, 5, 5, 5, 6 and 4 animals, respectively) were studied. In four naturally calving cows (IV) endometrial biopsies were obtained within 30 min after the expulsion of the calf. All tissue probes were fixed for 24h in 4% formaldehyde, routinely embedded in paraffin, and cut at 4 microm. Progesterone receptors (PR), estrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha) and glucocorticoid receptors (GR) were assessed using specific antibodies and staining intensities were documented employing an immunoreactive score (IRS). PR, ERalpha and GR exhibited cell type- and location-specific distribution patterns. IRS for PR and ERalpha did not differ between groups. GR-IRS of endometrial stromal cells, however, were higher in animals undergoing premature caesarean section after induction of birth compared to animals slaughtered during month 8 or 9 of pregnancy or animals receiving caesarean section following dystocia. Results of the present study indicate that steroid hormone receptor amounts within the intercaruncular uterine wall do not (PR, ERalpha) - or in a tissue-specific manner (GR) only - change during the peripartal period, although respective hormones undergo massive changes during this period. This is in strict contrast to the placentome. Comparatively lower local tissue estrogen concentrations around term may be one cause for this difference.

Abstract
The chain of events leading to prepartal luteolysis in cattle is not yet fully understood. Prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha)) seems to be a major factor involved. However, only little information is available about the underlying regulatory mechanisms. Consequently, the expression of cyclooxygenase-II (COX-II) and 20alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (20alpha-HSD), an enzyme recently shown to be most likely responsible for the production of luteolytic PGF(2alpha) in the endometrium of cyclic cows, was investigated in bovine placentomes. Immunohistochemical methods were applied to placentomes from 17 pregnant cows between days 100 and 284, from three cows during the prepartal progesterone decrease (days 273-282) and from five parturient cows. COX-II was found in uninucleated trophoblast cells (UTC) from day 100 until parturition. However, between days 100 and 235 expression was only weak to moderate, focal and mainly restricted to the chorionic plate and adjacent basal parts of chorionic stem villi. In placentomes from a 270 and a 284 day pregnant cow, in which the prepartal decline of progesterone levels had not started yet, staining had substantially increased and extended to secondary and tertiary chorionic villi. In prepartal and parturient cows strong to intense staining was present in UTC all over the villous tree. Real time RT-PCR confirmed an extensive pre- and intrapartal rise of COX-II expression in bovine placentomes with a 70-100-fold increase of COX-II-mRNA levels. 20alpha-HSD/PGFS was widely expressed in UTC of chorionic villi. Like COX-II it was down-regulated in UTC differentiating into trophoblast giant cells. Immunostaining pattern did not change remarkably during the period under investigation, and 20alpha-HSD/PGFS-mRNA levels increased only 2.6-fold in the prepartal phase. Thus, in UTC PGF(2alpha) may be produced via COX-II and 20alpha-HSD/PGFS, but only COX-II may be substantially involved in the control of a putative prepartal placentomal output of luteolytic PGs, whereas 20alpha-HSD/PGFS seems to be expressed in a more constitutive manner.

Abstract
The cause of low fertility in dairy cows is multifactorial. Poor nutrition during the dry and early postpartum periods results in reduced glucose, insulin, insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I) and low LH pulse frequency with concomitant increases in beta-hydroxy butyrate, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and triacylglycerol. Cows must mobilize large lipid, but also some protein reserves, with a consequent increased incidence of such metabolic disorders as hypocalcaemia, acidosis, ketosis, fatty liver and displaced abomasums. The occurrence of milk fever and ketosis affects uterine contractions, delays calving and increases the risk of retained foetal membranes (RFM) and endometritis. The nutritional risk factors that cause RFM are hypocalcaemia, high body condition score (BCS) at calving and deficiencies in Vitamin E and selenium. The risk factors for endometritis are hypocalcaemia, RFM, high triacylglycerol and NEFA. Thus, metabolic disorders predispose cows to gynaecological disorders, thereby reducing reproductive efficiency. Cows that are overconditioned at calving or those that lose excess body weight are more likely to have a prolonged interval to first oestrus, thereby prolonging days open. Nutritionally induced postpartum anoestrus is characterized by turnover of dominant follicles incapable of producing sufficient oestradiol to induce ovulation due to reduced LH pulse frequency. High nutrition can also increase metabolic clearance rate of steroid hormones such as progesterone or oestradiol. Lower concentrations of oestradiol on the day of oestrus are highly correlated with the occurrence of suboestrus, thereby making the detection of oestrus in high yielding cows even more difficult. Nutrition also affects conception rate (CR) to AI. Cows that develop hypocalcaemia, ketosis, acidosis or displaced abomasums have lower CRs and take longer to become pregnant. Excessive loss of BCS and excess protein content of the ration can reduce CR while supplemental fats that attenuate the production of F2alpha can improve CR. The increased metabolic clearance rate of progesterone (P4), which decreases blood concentrations during early embryo cleavage up to the blastocyst stage is associated with decreased CRs. In conclusion, poor nutritional management of the dairy cow, particularly before and after calving, is a key driver of infertility.
