Food and nutrient intakes of French frequent seafood consumers with regard to fish consumption recommendations: results from the CALIPSO study

Dietary patterns in relation with nutritional outcomes and associated factors among adolescents: implications for context-specific dietary intervention for the Agrarian Community, Northwest Ethiopia

Introduction

Dietary pattern analysis allows us to characterize the dietary intakes of individuals rather than nutrient intake data and strongly predicts disease risks. The relationship between food intake and adolescents' nutritional health is not well understood yet. Therefore, this study aimed to generate evidence for context-specific dietary intervention for adolescents.

Objective

This study aimed to determine dietary patterns and their relationship with nutritional outcomes and identify the contributing factors among adolescents in the Agrarian Community of Northwest Ethiopia.

Methods

A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 622 randomly selected adolescents. Dietary data were collected over a 1-week recall period using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). After testing the basic assumptions, an exploratory factor analysis was conducted to determine the dietary patterns. Anthropometric data on weight and height were collected to determine the nutritional status using WHO Anthroplus 2010 software. A chi-square test was conducted to evaluate the effect of different dietary patterns on nutritional outcomes. A multivariable binary logistic regression model was used to identify factors affecting the dietary patterns of adolescents.

Result

Three types of dietary patterns, namely, traditional, mixed, and animal-source foods with traditional alcoholic beverage consumption were identified. These dietary patterns explain 58.64% of the variance in adolescent diet in the study setting. The burden of stunting was 15.12% vs. 11.21, 19.40% vs. 6.94, and 8.36% vs.17.97% among adolescents with lower traditional, mixed, and higher animal sources with alcoholic dietary pattern consumption habits, respectively (value of p <0.05). Adolescents who resided in low-land agroecology (AOR = 2.44; 95% CL: 1.24, 4.81) and had access to animal-source foods (AOR = 1.64; 95% CI: 1.04, 2.60) were associated with lower consumption of traditional dietary patterns. Similarly, adolescents who resided in low-land (AOR = 1.80; 95% CI: 1.18, 2.74) had formal education (AOR = 2.38; 95% CI: 1.35, 4.19) and had poor nutrition knowledge (AOR = 2.83; 95% CL: 1.55, 5.19) were associated with lower consumption of mixed dietary patterns. Moreover, adolescents residing in the high-land (AOR = 2.50; 95% CI: 1.37, 4.56) and being female (AOR =1.87; 95% CI: 1.27, 2.74) were significant factors associated with lower consumption of animal-sourced foods with traditional alcoholic beverage consumption patterns.

Conclusion

Multidimensional modifiable factors were explored that could be targeted for public health interventions for the identified dietary patterns. Integrated and multifaceted dietary intervention approaches are needed to promote healthy diets and discourage the consumption of unhealthy diets to reduce undernutrition in the study area and similar settings.

Exploring barriers to diversified dietary feeding habits among adolescents in the agrarian community, North West Ethiopia

Introduction

Adolescence is a critical and neglected age group of the population in any form of nutritional intervention. A comprehensive study that assesses barriers that influence their diversified feeding habit is not well investigated in qualitative approaches. Therefore, this study was conducted to fill this gap by providing evidence on exploring barriers to diversified feeding habits of adolescents in the agrarian community, North West Ethiopia.

Objective

The aim of the study was to explore barriers to diversified feeding habits of adolescents in the agrarian community, North West Ethiopia.

Methods

A phenomenological qualitative study design was conducted among adolescents in the age group of 10-19 years, and adults in the age range of 25 to 64 years (representatives of farmers, agricultural, health, and education sectors). We conducted 24 in-depth interviews (12- adolescents, 4-health, 2- agricultural extension, 3-education, and 3-farmer representative) among purposively selected community groups. In-depth interview guides and observation checklist were utilized for data collection. The audio-recorded qualitative data were transcribed word by word into English. Finally, the translated data were exported to ATLAS ti version 7.1 software for thematic analysis based on inductive content analysis. All coded quotations, including memos written throughout the coding process, were then analyzed to identify themes inductively.

Results

Dietary habit of adolescents in the study area was predominantly plant-based cereals with low protein, vitamins, and mineral contents. Adolescents have limited consumption of fruits, vegetables, and animal source foods. Adolescents with these feeding habits had suboptimal intake of micronutrients and proteins, which are crucial for their rapid growth stage. Individual-level barriers, family-level influence, dietary tradition of community, agricultural practice (poor agroforestry practice of the community, and poor agricultural practice to produce year-round diverse food items), and week multi-sectorial collaboration for nutritional intervention all influenced adolescent dietary habits.

Conclusion

Multiple layers of barriers influenced the diverse dietary habits of adolescents in the study setting. These multiple and interconnected influences ranged from individual level to multi-sectorial collaboration. Nutritional interventions should be implemented at the individual, family, agricultural, and multi-sectorial levels to improve adolescents' diverse dietary habits.

Investigating microplastics and potentially toxic elements contamination in canned Tuna, Salmon, and Sardine fishes from Taif markets, KSA

Microplastics (MPs) have been documented in different foodstuffs and beverages, that could affect human health due to their ingestion. Furthermore, seafood contamination with MPs puts pillars of food availability and utilization at risk. The present study investigates MPs and toxic elements pollution in commercially canned fishes from Taif governorate markets. Seven different canned fishes’ brands were used in the present study from different manufacturer countries and purchased from Taif markets. Tissue samples were digested by 10% of KOH; then, dry filters were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy to detect MPs. Filtrates were used to detect any potentially toxic elements by inductively coupled plasma. Different MPs were detected in edible tissue, such as canned Tuna contaminated with nylon, 1,2-polybutadiene, and ethylene vinyl alcohol. Sardines contain ethylene vinyl alcohol and poly(vinyl stearate), but Salmon does not have any MPs. Different elements were present in the selected samples in the decreasing order of Al > Se > Zn and traces of As and Sb. Canned fishes were contaminated with MPs and potentially toxic elements. This contamination could be a warning of the potential health risks with the long-term exposure. Therefore, it is recommended to include micro-, meso-, and even nanoplastics in the guidelines of testing food safety management systems.

Microwave-Assisted Digestion Procedures Using Diluted Oxidant Mixture for Elemental Analysis of Crustaceans by MIP OES

The aim of this study was to evaluate three digestion procedures using a diluted oxidant mixture of nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide, and water for determination of Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, and Zn in shrimp and crab samples from Northern Brazil by microwave-induced plasma optical emission spectrometry. The efficiency of the digestion procedure was evaluated by comparing the residual carbon content, residual acidity, and elemental concentrations obtained in the samples. Digestion procedure 2 (4 mL HNO₃ + 4 mL H₂O₂ + 4 mL H₂O) was chosen due the adequate residual carbon content (5.85%) and low residual acidity (2.94 mol L^-1). The recoveries obtained using the certified reference material (DORM-4) varied from 90 to 105%. High contents of K and Mg were found in the studied crustaceans. Also, it can give an excellent contribution to the recommended daily intake of Cu and Zn, indicating that these foods can be considered a good source of these minerals for the human diet.

Fish, a Mediterranean source of n-3 PUFA: benefits do not justify limiting consumption

Fish is an important source of energy, high-quality proteins, fat, vitamins and minerals. Within lipids, n-3 long-chain PUFA (n-3 LC PUFA), mainly EPA and DHA, play an important role in health promotion and disease prevention. In contrast to the potential health benefits of dietary fish intake, certain chemical pollutants, namely heavy metals and some organic compounds, contained in seafood have emerged as an issue of concern, particularly for frequent fish consumers and sensitive groups of populations. The present review summarises the health benefits and risks of fish consumption. n-3 LC-PUFA are key compounds of cell membranes and play an important role in human health from conception through every stage of human development, maturation and ageing. DHA has a major role in the development of brain and retina during fetal development and the first 2 years of life and positively influences neurodevelopment, mainly visual acuity and cognitive functions. n-3 LC-PUFA are also effective in preventing cardiovascular events (mainly stroke and acute myocardial infarction) especially in persons with high cardiovascular risk. By contrast, there is convincing evidence of adverse neurological/neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants and young children associated with methylmercury exposure during fetal development due to maternal fish consumption during pregnancy. Dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls present in contaminated fish may also develop a risk for both infants and adults. However, for major health outcomes among adults, the vast majority of epidemiological studies have proven that the benefits of fish intake exceed the potential risks with the exception of a few selected species in sensitive populations.

Intakes and adequacy of potentially important nutrients for cognitive development among 5-year-old children in the Seychelles Child Development and Nutrition Study

OBJECTIVE

To assess the nutritional adequacy of Seychellois children in relation to nutrients reported to be important for cognitive development.

DESIGN

Dietary intakes were assessed by 4 d weighed food diaries and analysed using dietary analysis software (WISP version 3·0; Tinuviel Software, UK). Individual nutrient intakes were adjusted to usual intakes and, in order to investigate adequacy, were compared with the UK Estimated Average Requirements for children aged 4-6 years.

SETTING

Children 5 years old were followed up as part of the Seychelles Child Development Nutrition Study (SCDNS), located in the high-fish-consuming population of Mahé, Republic of Seychelles.

SUBJECTS

Analysis was carried out on a sample of 229 children (118 boys, 111 girls).

RESULTS

Children consumed a diet of which fortified cereal and milk products contributed the most to nutrient intakes. The majority (≥80 %) of children met requirements for several nutrients important for child development including Fe, folate and Se. Adjusted dietary intakes of Cu, Zn, iodine, niacin and vitamin A were below the Estimated Average Requirement or Recommended Nutrient Intake. Mean adjusted energy intakes (boys 4769 kJ/d (1139·84 kcal/d), girls 4759 kJ/d (1137·43 kcal/d)) were lower than the estimated energy requirement (boys 5104 kJ/d (1220 kcal/d), girls 5042 kJ/d (1205 kcal/d)) for 88 % of boys and 86 % of girls.

CONCLUSIONS

Nutrition was adequate for most children within the SCDNS cohort. Low intakes of some nutrients (including Zn, niacin and vitamin A) could reflect nutritional database inaccuracies, but may require further investigation. The study provides valuable information on the adequacy of intakes of nutrients which could affect the growth and development of Seychellois children.

A risk–benefit analysis approach to seafood intake to determine optimal consumption

Seafood provides n-3 long-chain PUFA (n-3 LC-PUFA), vitamins and minerals, which are essential to maintain good health. Moreover, seafood is a source of contaminants such as methylmercury, arsenic and persistent organic pollutants that may affect health. The aim of the present study was to determine in what quantities seafood consumption would provide nutritional benefits, while minimising the risks linked to food contaminants. Seafood was grouped into clusters using a hierarchical cluster analysis. Those nutrients and contaminants were selected for which it is known that seafood is a major source. The risk–benefit analysis consisted in using an optimisation model with constraints to calculate optimum seafood cluster consumption levels. The goal was to optimise nutrient intakes as well as to limit contaminant exposure with the condition being to attain recommended nutritional intakes without exceeding tolerable upper intakes for contaminants and nutrients, while taking into account background intakes. An optimum consumption level was calculated for adults that minimises inorganic arsenic exposure and increases vitamin D intake in the general population. This consumption level guarantees that the consumer reaches the recommended intake for n-3 LC-PUFA, Se and I, while remaining below the tolerable upper intakes for methylmercury, Cd, dioxins, polychlorobiphenyls, Zn, Ca and Cu. This consumption level, which is approximately 200 g/week of certain fatty fish species and approximately 50 g/week of lean fish, molluscs and crustaceans, has to be considered in order to determine food consumption recommendations in a public health perspective.
