Adherence to the healthy Nordic diet is associated with weight change during 7 years of follow-up

Associations of food motives with red meat and legume consumption in the population-based DILGOM study

PURPOSE

To improve human health and environmental sustainability, red meat consumption should decrease and legume consumption increase in diets. More information on food motives, however, is required when developing more tailored and effective interventions targeting legume and meat consumption. We aimed to examine the associations between food motives and red meat and legume consumption, and whether these associations differ between different subgroups (gender, age groups, marital status, education, BMI).

METHODS

Ten food motives (health, mood, convenience, sensory appeal, natural content, price-cheap, price-value, weight control, familiarity and ethical concern measured with Food Choice Questionnaire) were studied in 3079 Finnish adults in the population-based DILGOM study. Food consumption was assessed with Food Frequency Questionnaire. The adjusted estimates from multivariable regression models are reported.

RESULTS

Higher relative importance of natural content (β = - 0.275, 95% CI - 0.388; - 0.162) and ethical concern (β = - 0.462, 95% CI - 0.620; - 0.305) were associated with lower red meat consumption, and higher appreciation of sensory appeal (β = 0.482, 95% CI 0.347; 0.616) and price-cheap (β = 0.190, 95% CI 0.099; 0.281) with higher red meat consumption. Higher importance of health (β = 0.608, 95% CI 0.390; 0.825) was associated with higher legume consumption, and higher appreciation of convenience (β = - 0.401, 95% CI - 0.522; - 0.279), price-value (β = - 0.257, 95% CI - 0.380; - 0.133) and familiarity (β = - 0.278, 95% CI - 0.393; - 0.164) with lower legume consumption. The associations of particularly ethical concern, weight control, sensory appeal and mood varied according to gender, age, marital status or BMI.

CONCLUSION

The development and implementation of actions to decrease red meat and increase legume consumption should focus on several food motives across different subgroups.

Different carbohydrate exposures and weight gain-results from a pooled analysis of three population-based studies

BACKGROUND

The role of carbohydrate quantity and quality in weight gain remains unsolved, and research on carbohydrate subcategories is scarce. We examined total carbohydrates, dietary fiber, total sugar, and sucrose intake in relation to the risk of weight gain in Finnish adults.

METHODS

Our data comprised 8327 adults aged 25-70 years in three population-based prospective cohorts. Diet was assessed by a validated food frequency questionnaire and nutrient intakes were calculated utilizing the Finnish Food Composition Database. Anthropometric measurements were collected according to standard protocols. Two-staged pooling was applied to derive relative risks across cohorts for weight gain of at least 5% by exposure variable intake quintiles in a 7-year follow-up. Linear trends were examined based on a Wald test.

RESULTS

No association was observed between intakes of total carbohydrate, dietary fiber, total sugar or sucrose and the risk of weight gain of at least 5%. Yet, total sugar intake had a borderline protective association with the risk of weight gain in participants with obesity (RR 0.63; 95% CI 0.40-1.00 for highest vs. lowest quintile) and sucrose intake in participants with ≥10% decrease in carbohydrate intake during the follow-up (RR 0.78; 95% CI 0.61-1.00) after adjustments for sex, age, baseline weight, education, smoking, physical activity, and energy intake. Further adjustment for fruit consumption strengthened the associations.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings do not support an association between carbohydrate intake and weight gain. However, the results suggested that concurrent changes in carbohydrate intake might be an important determinant of weight change and should be further examined in future studies.

Determining the effective factors in predicting diet adherence using an intelligent model

Adhering to a healthy diet plays an essential role in preventing many nutrition-related diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to predict adherence to the prescribed diets using a hybrid model of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and the genetic algorithm (GA). In this study, 26 factors affecting diet adherence were modeled using ANN and GA(ANGA). A dataset of 1528 patients, including 1116 females and 412 males, referred to a private clinic was applied. SPSS Ver.25 and MATLAB toolbox 2017 were employed to make the model and analyze the data. The results showed that the accuracy of the proposed ANN and ANGA models for predicting diet adherence was 93.22% and 93.51%, respectively. Also, the Pearson coefficient showed a significant relationship among the factors. The developed model showed the proper performance for predicting adherence to the diet. Moreover, the most effective factors were selected using GA. Some important factors that affect diet adherence include the duration of the marriage, the reason for referring to the clinic, weight, body mass index (BMI), weight satisfaction, lunch and dinner times, and sleep time. Therefore, applying the proposed model can help dietitians identify people who need more support to adhere to the diet.

Association between overall diet quality and postmenopausal breast cancer risk in five Finnish cohort studies

There is limited evidence for any dietary factor, except alcohol, in breast cancer (BC) risk. Therefore, studies on a whole diet, using diet quality indices, can broaden our insight. We examined associations of the Nordic Diet (mNDI), Mediterranean diet (mMEDI) and Alternative Healthy Eating Index (mAHEI) with postmenopausal BC risk. Five Finnish cohorts were combined including 6374 postmenopausal women with dietary information. In all, 8–9 dietary components were aggregated in each index, higher total score indicating higher adherence to a healthy diet. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate the combined hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for BC risk. During an average 10-year follow-up period, 274 incident postmenopausal BC cases were diagnosed. In multivariable models, the HR for highest vs. lowest quintile of index was 0.67 (95 %CI 0.48–1.01) for mNDI, 0.88 (0.59–1.30) for mMEDI and 0.89 (0.60–1.32) for mAHEI. In this combined dataset, a borderline preventive finding of high adherence to mNDI on postmenopausal BC risk was found. Of the indices, mNDI was more based on the local food culture than the others. Although a healthy diet has beneficially been related to several chronic diseases, the link with the etiology of postmenopausal BC does not seem to be that obvious.

Towards a More Sustainable Nutrition: Complementary Feeding and Early Taste Experiences as a Basis for Future Food Choices

The concept of sustainable nutrition considers different fields: from human health to environmental, economic and socio-cultural aspects. Currently, in Europe, the diets that reflect the assumptions of the sustainable diet are the Mediterranean Diet and the New Nordic Diet. They both encourage the consumption of vegetable, organic and minimally processed foods, as well as regional, seasonal and Fair-Trade products, reducing the ecological impact of the production chain. These eating habits could be established starting from the prenatal period and from infancy during the complementary feeding stage, aiding children to accept of a more variable diet in terms of flavor, taste and texture. In particular, the positive parental role model is an effective method for improving a child’s diet and behaviors. Two healthy plates representing a sustainable diet in early infancy, at 6 and 24 months, are here proposed, in line with the “Planetary Health Diet” approved by the EAT-Lancet Commission. Our work aims to highlight how a sustainable diet is possible since infancy, since the introduction of solid foods.

Association between social jet lag, quality of diet and obesity by diurnal preference in Finnish adult population

The evening type has been associated with unhealthy behaviors and adverse health outcomes, such as unhealthy dietary habits and obesity. Misalignment between biological and social rhythms, referred to as social jet lag (SJL), has been considered to explain these outcomes, because evening types are more prone to SJL. However, the existing evidence has been inconsistent and SJL by diurnal preference has hardly been examined. We examined the associations between SJL, the quality of the diet, and the prevalence of obesity by diurnal preference. This dataset included 6779 Finns (55% women, aged 25-74 years) from the National FINRISK 2012 and DILGOM 2014 studies. Diurnal preference was assessed with a shortened version of the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). SJL was calculated with the sleep-corrected formula (SJL_sc). SJL was divided into three groups by the degree of SJL (<1h, ≥1h but <2h and ≥2h). The dietary intake was assessed with a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and the quality of the diet with the Baltic Sea Diet Score. Body weight, height, and waist circumference (WC) were measured, and the body mass index (BMI) was calculated (kg/m²). Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) followed by Bonferroni multiple comparison post-hoc tests and logistic regression models were used to analyze the differences between the lowest and the highest SJL groups by diurnal preference. In the highest SJL group (≥2h), there were more evening types than morning types (7%-points, p < .001). Overall, those in the highest SJL_sc group were on average younger than those in the lowest SJL_sc group (p< .001). Also, those in the highest SJL_sc group tended to have lower adherence to the Baltic Sea Diet compared to the participants in the lowest SJL_sc group, but this difference reached significance only in morning types (p = .006). Furthermore, morning types in the highest SJL_sc group had higher BMI and WC compared to the morning types in the lowest SJL_sc group (BMI, p = .016; WC, p = .012). In conclusion, evening types had on average more SJL than morning types, but the degree of SJL was associated with the quality of the diet and obesity only in the morning types.

The Nordic diet and the risk of non-communicable chronic disease and mortality: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies

We aimed to investigate the association between adherence to the Nordic diet (ND) and the risk of chronic disease. PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science were searched to February 2020 to find prospective cohort studies. The relative risks (RRs) were calculated using a fixed-effects/random-effects model. The certainty of evidence was rated using the GRADE approach. Thirteen prospective cohort studies with 930,153 participants were included. The RRs for the highest compared to the lowest category of adherence to the ND were 0.78 (95%CI: 0.69, 0.87; I² = 51%, n = 6) for all-cause mortality, 0.78 (95%CI: 0.74, 0.83; I² = 70%, n = 4) for cardiovascular mortality, 0.86 (95%CI: 0.80, 0.93; I² = 83%, n = 4) for cancer mortality, 0.88 (95%CI: 0.79, 0.98; I² = 3%, n = 3) for stroke, 0.80 (95%CI: 0.68, 0.95; I² = 47%, n = 3) for myocardial infarction, and 0.90 (95%CI: 0.82, 0.99; I² = 33%, n = 4) for type 2 diabetes. There was an inverse linear association between the ND score and the risk of mortality, and an inverse monotonic association for type 2 diabetes. The certainty in the estimates ranged from very low to low.

Associations of the serum metabolite profile with a healthy Nordic diet and risk of coronary artery disease

BACKGROUND & AIM

A healthy Nordic diet (HND) rich in wholegrain cereals, berries, vegetables, and fish, has been associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, but the molecular links remain unclear. Here, we present the application of nontargeted metabolic profiling based on liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to identify metabolites that would potentially reflect the adherence to HND and their relationship with the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD).

METHODS

From a Finnish population-based prospective cohort (Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study; KIHD), we collected 364 baseline serum samples in 4 groups: 1) 94 participants with high adherence to HND who developed CAD during the follow-up of 20.4 ± 7.6 years (cases), 2) 88 participants with high adherence who did not develop CAD during follow-up (controls), 3) 93 CAD cases with low adherence, and 4) 89 controls with low adherence.

RESULTS

Indolepropionic acid, proline betaine, vitamin E derivatives, and medium-chain acylcarnitines were associated with adherence to HND after adjustments for age, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), physical activity, and total cholesterol. These metabolites also correlated negatively with blood lipid profiles, BMI, insulin, inflammation marker high-sensitivity C reactive protein (hsCRP), smoking, and alcohol consumption, as well as positively with physical activity. Predictors of CAD risk included several lipid molecules, which also indicated lower adherence to HND. But, only the associations with the plasmalogens PC(O-16:0/18:2) and PC(O-16:1/18:2) remained significant after adjusting for age, smoking, systolic blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, and WHR. These plasmalogens did not correlate with any investigated risk factors of CAD at baseline, which may highlight their potential as novel predictors of CAD risk. Interestingly, the metabolic profile predicting CAD risk differed based on the adherence to HND. Also, HND adherence was more distinct within CAD cases than controls, which may emphasize the interaction between HND adherence and CAD risk.

CONCLUSIONS

The association between higher adherence to HND and a lower risk of CAD likely involves a complex interaction of various endogenous, plant-, and microbial-derived metabolites.

Association of Baltic Sea and Mediterranean diets with frailty phenotype in older women, Kuopio OSTPRE-FPS study

Purpose

To evaluate the association between Baltic Sea diet (BSD) and Mediterranean diet (MED) with frailty.

Methods

This was a secondary analysis on the osteoporosis risk factor and prevention–fracture prevention study on 440 women aged 65–72 years. Frailty was ascertained with the presence of 3–5 and prefrailty 1–2 of the following criteria: weight loss ≥ 5%, low life satisfaction score, walking speed ≤ 0.51 m/s, handgrip strength divided by body mass index ≤ 0.67 kg/m² and physical activity ≤ 2 h/week. Women answered to questionnaires on lifestyle factors and 3-day food record. BSD score was ascertained using intake of nine and MED score of eight foods or nutrients components from food record. Multinomial logistic regression models adjusted for age, energy intake, smoking, living status, marital status and intervention group evaluated associations between MED and BSD with frailty phenotype status.

Results

At 3-year follow-up, 206 women (46.8%) were prefrail and 36 (8.2%) were frail. After adjusting for confounders, a tendency was found between BSD per standard deviation (SD)-unit increase and lower likelihood of frailty (β = 0.62, 95% CI = 0.38–1.01, P = 0.057). Further, MED per SD-unit increase was associated with lower likelihood of prefrailty (β = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.6–0.9, P = 0.009). Consumption of vegetables was lower in frail (31.5 ± 36.0 g/day) and prefrail women (37.1 ± 42.0 g/day) than in non-frail women (48.6 ± 40.7 g/day) (P for trend = 0.041).

Conclusions

Positive behavioral characteristics such as following MED and BSD may be associated with lower likelihood of prefrailty and frailty in older women. However, further longitudinal analyses are warranted.

Development of a Food-Based Diet Quality Score from a Short FFQ and Associations with Obesity Measures, Eating Styles and Nutrient Intakes in Finnish Twins

We constructed a food-based diet quality score (DQS) and examined its association with obesity measures, eating styles and nutrient intakes. Participants were 3592 individuals (764 dizygotic [DZ] and 430 monozygotic [MZ] twin pairs) from the FinnTwin16 study. The DQS (0–12 points) was constructed from a short 14 item food frequency questionnaire. Anthropometric measures and eating styles were self-reported. Nutrient intakes were calculated from food diaries completed in a subsample of 249 individuals (45 same-sex DZ and 60 MZ twin pairs). Twins were analyzed both as individuals and as twin pairs. The DQS was inversely associated with body mass index (β = −0.12, per one-unit increase in DQS, p < 0.001), waist circumference (β = −0.34, p < 0.001), obesity (odds ratio [OR]: 0.95, p = 0.004) and abdominal obesity (OR: 0.88, p < 0.001), independent of sex, age, physical activity and education. A higher DQS was associated with health-conscious eating, having breakfast, less snacking, fewer evening meals, and a higher frequency and regularity of eating. The DQS was positively correlated with the intakes of protein, fiber and magnesium and negatively correlated with the intakes of total fat, saturated fat and sucrose. Within twin pairs, most of the associations between the DQS with eating styles and some nutrients remained, but the DQS was not associated with obesity measures within twin pairs. The DQS is an easy-to-use tool for ranking adults according to diet quality and shows an association with obesity measures, eating styles and key nutrients in the expected direction.

Environmental Sustainability Perspectives of the Nordic Diet

"The Nordic diet" is an umbrella term that encompasses any interpretation that combines Food-Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDGs) with local Nordic foods. The five Nordic countries have collaborated on Nordic Nutrition Recommendations for forty years, including FBDGs, so their national guidelines are similar. The countries also share similar public health issues, including widespread nonconformity to the guidelines, although in different ways. The aim of this concept paper is to discuss environmental sustainability aspects of the Nordic diet, describe the status of and make suggestions for the inclusion of sustainability in future work on the Nordic diet. We exploit the sustainability-health synergy. A food intake more in line with the current FBDGs, which emphasises more plant-based and less animal-based foods, is necessary for high environmental sustainability. In turn, sustainability is an important motivator for health-promoting dietary shifts. Policy development requires long-term efforts. Since the Nordic diet can be considered a further development and improvement of old, traditional diets, there is huge potential to formulate a Nordic diet that benefits both human and planetary health. It is time for concerted engagement and actions-a new Nordic nutrition transition.

Role of inflammation markers in the prediction of weight gain and development of obesity in adults - A prospective study

Background and aims

There is a growing body of literature confirming the association between inflammation and obesity. Recent research suggests that inflammation may play a role in weight gain. The aim of the study was to analyse whether serum inflammatory markers predict weight gain or development of obesity in a prospective study design.

Methods and results

The baseline study (DILGOM 2007) consists of a population-based sample of 5024 Finnish men and women aged 25–75 years, of whom 3735 participated in the follow-up study in 2014. Baseline data collection included a questionnaire on health behaviour, physical examinations and blood samples including serum high-sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-CRP), Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNF-alpha) and high molecular weight adiponectin (HMW adiponectin). Indicators of obesity were weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and body fat percentage (% body fat). At baseline hs-CRP, IL-1Ra, IL-6, TNF-alpha and HMW adiponectin associated strongly (p < 0.0001) with obesity indicators. After adjustment for several potential predictors of obesity, hs-CRP and IL-1Ra associated inversely with changes in obesity indicators during the 7-year follow-up. These associations disappeared, however, after further adjustment for baseline BMI. Only HMW adiponectin retained a modest positive association with the change in weight (p = 0.008), in BMI (p = 0.007) and in waist circumference (p = 0.002).

Conclusion

These findings suggest that the inflammatory markers, although highly associated with obesity, do not predict weight gain in an adult population. This could translate into inflammation being a result of obesity rather than a contributing factor to it.

Social Jet Lag Associates Negatively with the Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet and Body Mass Index among Young Adults

Obesity and unhealthy eating habits have been associated with irregular sleep-wake patterns during the week, also known as social jet lag. The Mediterranean diet is a healthy pattern related with a better health and sleep quality. However, potential associations with social jet lag remain unexplored. The aim of this study was to examine whether higher social jet lag is linked to lower adherence to the Mediterranean diet and whether it is associated with BMI (Body Mass Index). This cross-sectional study included 534 young adults (18-25 years). Anthropometric parameters, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, chronotype and social jet lag were studied. Our results revealed that individuals with greater social jet lag showed lower adherence to the Mediterranean diet and had a higher BMI. Among the habits that characterized the Mediterranean dietary pattern, we observed that higher social jet lag was significantly associated with a lower intake of fruits and vegetables, as well as skipping breakfast. Hence, the promotion of regular sleep habits together with healthy dietary patterns should be considered for obesity prevention, especially among young adults.

Food neophobia associates with poorer dietary quality, metabolic risk factors, and increased disease outcome risk in population-based cohorts in a metabolomics study

BACKGROUND

Food neophobia is considered a behavioral trait closely linked to adverse eating patterns and reduced dietary quality, which have been associated with increased risk of obesity and noncommunicable diseases.

OBJECTIVES

In a cross-sectional and prospective study, we examined how food neophobia is associated with dietary quality, health-related biomarkers, and disease outcome incidence in Finnish and Estonian adult populations.

METHODS

The study was conducted based on subsamples of the Finnish DIetary, Lifestyle, and Genetic determinants of Obesity and Metabolic syndrome (DILGOM) cohort (n = 2982; age range: 25-74 y) and the Estonian Biobank cohort (n = 1109; age range: 18-83 y). The level of food neophobia was assessed using the Food Neophobia Scale, dietary quality was evaluated using the Baltic Sea Diet Score (BSDS), and biomarker profiles were determined using an NMR metabolomics platform. Disease outcome information was gathered from national health registries. Follow-up data on the NMR-based metabolomic profiles and disease outcomes were available in both populations.

RESULTS

Food neophobia associated significantly (adjusted P < 0.05) with health-related biomarkers [e.g., ω-3 (n-3) fatty acids, citrate, α1-acid glycoprotein, HDL, and MUFA] in the Finnish DILGOM cohort. The significant negative association between the severity of food neophobia and ω-3 fatty acids was replicated in all cross-sectional analyses in the Finnish DILGOM and Estonian Biobank cohorts. Furthermore, food neophobia was associated with reduced dietary quality (BSDS: β: -0.03 ± 0.006; P = 8.04 × 10-5), increased fasting serum insulin (β: 0.004 ± 0.0013; P = 5.83 × 10-3), and increased risk of type 2 diabetes during the ∼8-y follow-up (HR: 1.018 ± 0.007; P = 0.01) in the DILGOM cohort.

CONCLUSIONS

In the Finnish and Estonian adult populations, food neophobia was associated with adverse alteration of health-related biomarkers and risk factors that have been associated with an increased risk of noncommunicable diseases. We also found that food neophobia associations with ω-3 fatty acids and associated metabolites are mediated through dietary quality independent of body weight.

Depression, emotional eating and long-term weight changes: a population-based prospective study

Background

Emotional eating (i.e. eating in response to negative emotions) has been suggested to be one mechanism linking depression and subsequent development of obesity. However, studies have rarely examined this mediation effect in a prospective setting and its dependence on other factors linked to stress and its management. We used a population-based prospective cohort of adults and aimed to examine 1) whether emotional eating mediated the associations between depression and 7-year change in body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), and 2) whether gender, age, night sleep duration or physical activity moderated these associations.

Methods

Participants were Finnish 25- to 74-year-olds who attended the DILGOM study at baseline in 2007 and follow-up in 2014. At baseline (n = 5024), height, weight and WC were measured in a health examination. At follow-up (n = 3735), height, weight and WC were based on measured or self-reported information. Depression (Center for Epidemiological Studies - Depression Scale), emotional eating (Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire-R18), physical activity and night sleep duration were self-reported. Age- and gender-adjusted structural equation models with full information maximum likelihood estimator were used in the analyses.

Results

Depression and emotional eating were positively associated and they both predicted higher 7-year increase in BMI (R² = 0.048) and WC (R² = 0.045). The effects of depression on change in BMI and WC were mediated by emotional eating. Night sleep duration moderated the associations of emotional eating, while age moderated the associations of depression. More specifically, emotional eating predicted higher BMI (P = 0.007 for the interaction) and WC (P = 0.026, respectively) gain in shorter sleepers (7 h or less), but not in longer sleepers (9 h or more). Depression predicted higher BMI (P < 0.001 for the interaction) and WC (P = 0.065, respectively) increase in younger participants, but not in older participants.

Conclusions

Our findings offer support for the hypothesis that emotional eating is one behavioural mechanism between depression and development of obesity and abdominal obesity. Moreover, adults with a combination of shorter night sleep duration and higher emotional eating may be particularly vulnerable to weight gain. Future research should examine the clinical significance of our observations by tailoring weight management programs according to these characteristics.

Substantial fat mass loss reduces low-grade inflammation and induces positive alteration in cardiometabolic factors in normal-weight individuals

The accumulation of fat, especially in visceral sites, is a significant risk factor for several chronic diseases with altered cardiometabolic homeostasis. We studied how intensive long-term weight loss and subsequent weight regain affect physiological changes, by longitudinally interrogating the lipid metabolism and white blood cell transcriptomic markers in healthy, normal-weight individuals. The current study examined 42 healthy, young (age: 27.5 ± 4.0 years), normal-weight (body mass index, BMI: 23.4 ± 1.7 kg/m²) female athletes, of which 25 belong to the weight loss and regain group (diet group), and 17 to the control group. Participants were evaluated, and fasting blood samples were drawn at three time points: at baseline (PRE); at the end of the weight loss period (MID: 21.1 ± 3.1 weeks after PRE); and at the end of the weight regain period (POST: 18.4 ± 2.9 weeks after MID). Following the weight loss period, the diet group experienced a ~73% reduction (~0.69 kg) in visceral fat mass (false discovery rate, FDR < 2.0 × 10^-16), accompanied by anti-atherogenic effects on transcriptomic markers, decreased low-grade inflammation (e.g., as α₁-acid glycoprotein (FDR = 3.08 × 10^-13) and hs-CRP (FDR = 2.44 × 10^-3)), and an increase in functionally important anti-atherogenic high-density lipoprotein -associated metabolites (FDR < 0.05). This occurred even though these values were already at favorable levels in these participants, who follow a fitness-lifestyle compared to age- and BMI-matched females from the general population (n = 58). Following the weight regain period, most of the observed beneficial changes in visceral fat mass, and metabolomic and transcriptomic profiles dissipated. Overall, the beneficial anti-atherogenic effects of weight loss can be observed even in previously healthy, normal-weight individuals.

Chronotype and energy intake timing in relation to changes in anthropometrics: a 7-year follow-up study in adults

Individuals with a later preference for the daily activities (evening types) tend to have unhealthier behaviors, which could increase their risk for obesity when compared those with an earlier preference (morning types). Furthermore, later food intake timing, another behavior more characteristic of evening types, has been associated with obesity. However, chronotype differences in the long-term weight change and the role of chronotype in the association between energy intake timing and obesity risk are not clear. To study this we first examined the independent associations of chronotype and energy intake timing with anthropometric changes and then whether chronotype modified the association between energy intake timing and obesity risk. Our data included 1097 Finns from DILGOM (DIetary Lifestyle and Genetic Determinants of Obesity and Metabolic syndrome) 2007 (baseline) and 2014 (follow-up) and from Findiet 2007. Chronotype was assessed with a shortened version of Horne and Östberg's morningness-eveningness questionnaire. Energy intake timing (as percentages of the total energy intake in the morning/evening) was assessed with 48-h dietary recalls. Weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference were based on measured and self-reported values. Analysis of co-variance and multivariable logistic regression models were used for statistical analyses. Evening typed women had greater weight gain (+ 2.3 kg vs. + 0.3 kg, P = 0.016) and increase in BMI (0.7 kg/m² vs. -0.1 kg/m², P = 0.024) than morning typed women. After excluding participants with depression, these associations attenuated to non-significant. Compared to participants whose energy intake was proportionally lowest during evening, those with proportionally highest energy intake during evening were more likely with obesity (BMI≥ 30 kg/m²) after follow-up (OR 1.97, 95% CI 1.21-3.21, Ptrend = 0.042). Participants' chronotype did not modify this association (Pinteract = 0.95). In conclusion, our findings indicated that evening energy intake may play a role in obesity regardless of the chronotype. Furthermore, evening typed women were more prone to increases in their anthropometrics, which seem to be at least partly explained by depression. Further studies of this topic are warranted.
