Major patterns of visual brain organization in teleosts and their relation to prehistoric events and the paleontological record

The Cytoarchitecture of the Tectal-Related Pallium of Squirrelfish, Holocentrus sp

The squirrelfish, which live in visually complex coral reefs, have very large eyes and a special dual-system “day and night vision” retina. They also have atypical expansions of brain areas involved in processing visual information. The midbrain tectum sends information via diencephalic relay to two enlarged dorsal telencephalic regions. The latter include a superficial dorsal/lateral “cortex-like area” of small to medium-sized cells [area dorsalis telencephali, pars lateralis-dorsal region (dorsal segment); Dld1] which projects to an underlying dorsocentral region of relatively large cells (the area dorsalis telencephali, pars centralis-dorsal region; Dcd) which in turn reconnects with the tectum. Additionally, the cerebellum is also involved in this pathway. The hypertrophied pallial regions, termed the tectal-related pallium (TRP), most likely exert major influences on a variety of visually-related sensorimotor systems. This research aimed at better establishing the cellular structures and possible connections within the TRP. Nissl and rapid Golgi staining, biotinylated dextran amine tracing and cell-filling, and electron microscopy were used in this study. For gross observation of the pallial areas and plotting of the study sites, a mini-atlas of transverse and horizontal sections was constructed. This research better documented the known cellular elements of the TRP and defined two novel cell types. Species differences in the TRP may be related to possible differences in behavior and ecology.

Comparative insights of the kisspeptin/kisspeptin receptor system: lessons from non-mammalian vertebrates

Kisspeptins, the peptide products of the Kiss1 gene, were initially identified in mammals as ligands of the G protein-coupled receptor 54 (GPR54; also termed Kiss1R) with ability to suppress tumor metastasis. In late 2003, the indispensable role of kisspeptins in the control of reproductive function was disclosed by the seminal observations that humans and mice carrying inactivating mutations of GPR54 displayed hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Since then, numerous experimental studies, conducted initially in several mammalian species, have substantiated the roles of kisspeptins as essential players in the physiologic regulation of key aspects of reproductive maturation and function, including the timing of puberty onset, the dynamic control of gonadotropin secretion via stimulation of GnRH neurons, the transmission of the negative and positive feedback effects of sex steroids, the metabolic regulation of fertility and the control of reproductive function by environmental (photoperiodic) cues. Notably, while studies about kisspeptins in non-mammals appeared initially to lag behind, significant efforts have been devoted recently to define the genomic organization and functional characteristics of kiss/kisspeptins and gpr54 in different non-mammalian species, including fish, reptiles and amphibians. These analyses, which will be comprehensively revised herein, have not only substantiated the conserved, essential roles of kisspeptins in the control of reproduction, but have also disclosed intriguing evolutionary aspects of kisspeptins and their receptors. Such comparative approaches will be instrumental to fuel further studies on the molecular regulation and physiological roles of kisspeptins, thus helping to unveil the complex biology of this system as indispensable regulator of the reproductive axis in a wide diversity of animal species.

Brain and sensory organ morphology in Antarctic eelpouts (Perciformes: Zoarcidae: Lycodinae)

Eelpouts of the family Zoarcidae comprise a monophyletic group of marine fishes with a worldwide distribution. Centers of high zoarcid diversity occur in the North Atlantic and North Pacific, with important radiations into the Arctic, along southern South America, and into the Southern Ocean around Antarctica. Along with snailfishes (Liparidae), zoarcids form an important component of the non-notothenioid fauna in the subzero shelf waters of Antarctica. We document the anatomy and histology of the brains, cranial nerves, olfactory apparatus, cephalic lateral lines, taste buds, and retinas of three Antarctic zoarcid species, living at depths of 310-939 m, representing three of the nine genera from this region. The primary emphasis is on Ophthalmolycus amberensis, and we provide a detailed drawing of the brain and cranial nerves of this species. Although this brain reflects general perciform neural morphology, it exhibits a reduction of the (optic) tecta and the eminentia granulares and crista cerebellares of the lateral line system. Interspecific differences among the three species are slight. The olfactory rosette consists of three to four lamellae and the nasal sac, contrary to the claim of Fanta et al. ([2001] Antarct Rec, Natl Inst Polar Res, Tokyo 45:27-42), is not in communication with the cephalic lateral line system. Primary olfactory neurons are abundant and converge on branches of the olfactory nerve. Numerous taste buds are located in the lips. All three species lack an ocular choroid rete and have relatively thin retinas with a low cell density and a single bank of rods as the only type of photoreceptor. Neural diversification among Antarctic zoarcids has not involved the evolution of sensory specialists; brain and sensory organ morphologies do not approach the condition seen in primary deep-sea fishes, or even that of some sympatric non-perciform secondary deep-sea fishes, including liparids and muraenolepidids (eel cods). There may be phylogenetic constraints on brain morphology in perciforms such that we do not see extreme specialization in sensory and neural systems for deep habitats. We suggest that the brains and sensory organs of Antarctic zoarcids reflect habitation of 500-2,000-m depths and likely reflect morphologies seen in zoarcids living on continental slopes elsewhere in the world. This balance among the sensory modalities makes zoarcids relatively generalized among secondary deep-sea fishes and may be one of the reasons this opportunistic and adaptable group has been successful in colonizing a variety of emergent and ephemeral habitats.
