Abstract
This study aims to understand the influence of friendship ties on the cognitive function in older Chinese population aged 60+ and the moderating role of gender. Three waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS) (2014, 2016, and 2018) data were adopted (n = 2145). A latent class growth modelling (LCGM) was conducted to examine friendship trajectories from 2014 to 2018. Four friendship trajectories were identified: (1) stable and strong, (2) steady decline, (3) recovery after decline, and (4) decline after growth. After controlling the cognitive function at baseline, compared to the "stable and strong" group, the "steady decline" group reported significantly lower cognitive function in 2018 (B = -0.79, β = -0.27, 95% CI [-0.42, -0.11]). Recovering friendship ties after decline is associated with a higher increase in cognitive function among males than females. This study highlights the protective effects of friendship on later-life cognitive function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The primary aim of this paper is to review evidence and clinical implications related to lifestyle activities associated with promoting brain and cognitive health. Our review targets four key lifestyle factors: physical activity and exercise, social engagement, cognitively stimulating activity, and consuming Mediterranean-style diets. METHOD We conducted a critical review of the lifestyle factor literature in the four domains listed earlier. We contextualize this literature review by translating findings, when possible, into evidence-based recommendations to consider when providing neuropsychological services. RESULTS There is significant current evidence supporting the role of physical activity and exercise, social engagement, cognitively stimulating activity, and consuming Mediterranean-style diets on positive brain and cognitive health outcomes. While some null findings are present in all four areas reviewed, the weight of the evidence supports the notion that engaging in these activities may promote brain and cognitive functioning. CONCLUSIONS Clinical neuropsychologists can have confidence in recommending engagement in physical activity, social activity, and cognitively stimulating activity, and adhering to a Mediterranean-style diet to promote brain and cognitive health. We discuss limitations in existing lifestyle factor research and future directions to enhance the existing evidence base, including additional research with historically underrepresented groups and individuals with neurological conditions.

Abstract
The relationship between geriatric depression and dementia has been widely debated, and the neurological mechanisms underlying subjective cognitive decline (SCD) associated with social relationships remain elusive. Subclinical geriatric depression (SGD) is common in patients with SCD, and close friends (CFs) have a great influence on a person's social life. Studies have proven that communication or leisure activities with CFs can improve the cognitive performance of elderly. However, it remains unclear whether the engagement of specific brain regions mediates having CFs, SGD, and SCD. In this study, we aimed to assess the association between social relationships (that is, CFs), SGD, and SCD from the perspective of brain function. We examined the data of 66 patients with SCD and 63 normal controls (NC). Compared with NC, SGD was significantly inversely correlated with the number of CFs in the SCD group. We calculated regional homogeneity (ReHo) of functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data of each subject. At a corrected threshold, the right occipital gyrus (SOG.R) and right fusiform gyrus (FFG.R) exhibited positive correlation with SGD in patients with SCD. Mediation analyses to query the inter-relationships between the neural markers and clinical variables exhibited a best fit of the model with CFs → FFG.R → SGD → SOG.R → SCD. These findings suggested a pathway whereby social relationships alter the function of specific brain regions, and SGD may be an early symptom of SCD. We observed that the FFG.R mediate social relationships and SGD, and the abnormality of the SOG.R may be a key factor in the SCD caused by depression. Moreover, a greater number of CFs may reduce the risk of developing SGD.

Abstract
Studies examining the impact of social change on individual development and aging postulate the growing importance of flexible relationships, such as friendship. Although friendship is well known as a factor of well-being in later life, the prevalence of friendship in older adult networks and its unequal distribution has been examined only in few studies. Through secondary data analysis of two cross-sectional surveys carried out in Switzerland in 1979 and 2011, respectively, the increasing presence of close friends was confirmed. Our results show that this trend was part of a broader lifestyle change after retirement, with increasing social engagements. However, this trend does not include a general decrease in social inequalities in friendship opportunities. Overall, friendship increase among older adults has contributed to a polarization of living conditions, with a majority of active, healthy persons contrasting with a minority of individuals who accumulate penalties.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Prior research suggests that the strength of association between Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology and lower cognitive performance is influenced by modifiable psychosocial factors, such as social network size. However, little is known about distinct social relationship types. METHODS The current cross-sectional study used data from the Washington Heights-Inwood Columbia Aging Project to examine whether social network characteristics (i.e., total size, spouse/partner, number of children, other relatives, friends) moderate associations between cortical thickness in regions implicated in AD and cognitive performance. RESULTS Lower cortical thickness was associated with worse global cognition among individuals with smaller friend networks, but not among individuals with larger friend networks. This pattern of results was most prominent for language and speed/executive functioning. DISCUSSION Longitudinal and intervention studies are needed to determine whether these cross-sectional findings reflect a protective effect of later-life friendships for maintaining cognitive performance in the context of poorer brain health.

Abstract
AbstractThe current study aimed at investigating feasibility of a self-administered task-switching training in a middle-aged working population. Eighty-one caregivers (41–62 years old) were instructed to train at home 8 times either within a 7- or 14-day interval. Only 56.7% performed more than 50% of the instructed number of training sessions. However, compliant caregivers (who completed more than 4 training sessions) showed significant training gains and transfer to an untrained task-switching task. Although transfer effects to other cognitive tasks were not found, trained participants tended to report fewer everyday memory failures than a control group. In conclusion, the implementation of a home-based task-switching training in everyday life of caregivers is possible. However, there is only limited evidence for generalization of results of previous laboratory studies. Adherence and transfer to other cognitive tasks are discussed as important challenges in conveying laboratory findings into real life.

Abstract
Social relations encompass a complex and dynamic set of characteristics that have been shown to distinctly affect health and quality of life across the lifespan and especially in older adulthood. In this chapter we begin with a brief review of several prominent theories of social relations. Next, we consider how social relations can be understood based on the resource they provide (e.g., contact frequency, social support), the relationship they stem from (e.g., friends, family), the strength of the tie (e.g., strong, weak) as well as the means of communication (e.g., offline, online). We briefly summarize how these characteristics have been shown to uniquely influence health and quality of life in older adulthood. Finally, we contemplate potential clinical applications, provide recommendations for the future and offer final concluding comments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the associates of bridging potential in networks of friends and its impact on cognitive function in older Korean Americans. METHODS Data came from 308 participants in Central Florida who were part of the Study of Older Korean Americans (SOKA). Using data from a name generator of three close friends in local Korean communities, non-overlapping networks were quantified for bridging potential. Linear regression models for bridging potential and cognitive function were examined. RESULTS Bridging potential was greater among those with stronger social ties with friends in general and higher levels of activity engagement. The direct benefit of bridging potential on cognitive function was also confirmed. In addition, bridging potential was found to mediate the effect of social ties with friends on cognitive function. DISCUSSION Findings underscore the interconnectedness of older immigrants' social and cognitive function and shed light on interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The lack of disease-modifying pharmacological agents for dementia highlights the critical importance of prevention, but known modifiable factors (e.g., education, physical health and health behaviors, depression, and social isolation) do not fully represent potential intervention targets. Positive psychosocial factors predict cognitive aging outcomes above and beyond known risk factors and may also correspond to upstream determinants that open up new avenues for prevention and intervention, as well as for reducing racial/ethnic inequalities in dementia. In this brief report, I summarize contemporary evidence for three positive psychosocial factors that appear to be particularly relevant to cognitive aging: perceived control, religious involvement, and social relations. METHODS Targeted review and synthesis of published studies. RESULTS Each of the multidimensional constructs appears to contain "active ingredients" that could help to optimize cognitive aging through disparate mechanisms. Although historically marginalized racial/ethnic groups face disproportionate barriers to accessing certain psychosocial protective factors (e.g., perceived control), these same groups also exhibit naturally occurring sources of psychosocial resilience (e.g., religious involvement) that allow them to achieve better late-life cognitive health than would be otherwise expected. With regard to social relations, converging evidence from disparate studies shows that fostering late-life friendships in particular may have high potential for building cognitive reserve and promoting healthy cognitive aging. CONCLUSIONS Positive psychosocial factors represent culturally relevant resources that, through careful research, could ultimately be harnessed to promote better cognitive aging for a growing and increasingly diverse population of older adults.

Abstract
The identification of social network factors associated with gait speed may offer different perspectives for improving community and clinical interventions for older adults. The objective of this study was to explore the associations of the social network of friends with gait speed. This was a cross-sectional study conducted in a sample of 128 older adult women recruited in community groups of physical activity. Clinical screening, social network questions, body composition evaluation, and gait speed test were applied to the participants. Logistic regression models were used to analyze associations between characteristics of the social network of friends and high gait speed. Findings indicated that social isolation was not associated with high gait speed and that popularity and proportion of friends with high gait speed were significantly associated with high gait speed. Findings suggested that there was a relationship between social network factors and the ability to perform high gait speed.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe and categorize difficulties in daily activities of older adults with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) compared to individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS Deductive quantitative content analysis was used to classify reported issues in the performance of meaningful daily activities, in older adults with SCD (n = 67; age= 70 ± 6.3) or MCI (n = 42; age= 72 ± 6.6). The occupational performance issues were identified using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, a semi-structured interview, and categorised using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). RESULTS Both groups identified issues in all nine ICF "Activities and Participation" domains, with no significant group effects on seven of them. The most frequently affected "Activities and Participation" domains in both groups were "Self-care" (e.g. exercise and diet); "Community, social and civic life" (e.g. social-leisure activities); and "General tasks and demands" (e.g. time management). Over 90% of the issues in both groups were described in the context of difficulties in "Mental functions" (e.g. memory and higher-level cognitive functions). CONCLUSIONS Older adults with SCD, although independent, identified a variety of daily activities that they are not performing satisfactorily, remarkably similar in nature to the occupational performance issues described by older adults with MCI.Implications for RehabilitationOlder adults with SCD identified difficulties in performing social and leisure activities, maintaining healthy lifestyle behaviours, and managing multiple daily tasks.The daily challenges described by older adults with SCD are similar in nature to those identified by those with MCI.Older adults with SCD and MCI describe their daily challenges are related not only to memory problems, but also to executive dysfunction.Interventions for older adults with SCD should aim to improve self-identified problems in everyday functioning.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Social reserve such as having close friends helps promoting activity engagement in old age. Activity engagement in turn contributes to the accumulation of cognitive reserve and is a key predictor for maintaining executive functioning in aging. We investigated the mediating role of leisure activity engagement in the longitudinal relation between close friends and subsequent change in executive functioning as measured through performance changes in the Trail Making Test (TMT). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Longitudinal study with 897 older adults tested in two waves 6 years apart, analyzed using latent change score modeling. MEASUREMENTS TMT parts A and B, leisure activity engagement, and close friends. RESULTS A larger number of close friends in the first wave of data collection was related to a higher frequency of leisure activities in the first wave. A higher frequency of leisure activities in the first wave significantly predicted a smaller subsequent increase in TMT completion time from the first to the second wave (i.e. a smaller decline in executive functioning). Importantly, 41.3% of the longitudinal relation between a larger number of close friends in the first wave and a smaller subsequent increase in TMT completion time (i.e. a smaller decline in executive functioning) was mediated via a higher frequency of leisure activities in the first wave. CONCLUSIONS Social reserve such as having close friends may help promoting activity engagement in old age. By enhancing individuals' cognitive reserve, this activity engagement may finally result in smaller subsequent decline in executive functioning in aging.

Abstract
Objectives: The composition of one's social network has been associated with cognition such that a greater proportion of family is associated with worse cognition compared to a greater proportion of friends. It is not clear whether this association between network composition and cognitive aging is driven by potential negative effects of family interactions or positive effects of friend interactions.Methods: Using the Health and Retirement Study (T1: 2006/2008, T2: 2010/2012, T3: 2012/2014), a longitudinal mediation model was conducted to test the effects of composition on episodic memory and latent change in memory through contact frequency with friends and family.Results: Analyses revealed indirect effects of composition on both T2 memory and latent change in memory through contact frequency with friends. A greater proportion of family in one's network was associated with lower contact frequency with friends and in turn lower memory. Composition was also associated with higher contact frequency with family; however, contact frequency with family was not associated with memory.Conclusions: These findings suggest that spending time with family may not affect episodic memory in older adulthood, but spending time with friends may be beneficial. Potential mechanisms and implications regarding the importance of friendships in later life are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Social engagement may be an important protective resource for cognitive aging. Some evidence suggests that time spent with friends may be more beneficial for cognition than time spent with family. Because maintaining friendships has been demonstrated to require more active maintenance and engagement in shared activities, activity engagement may be one underlying pathway that explains the distinct associations between contact frequency with friends versus family and cognition. METHODS Using two waves of data from the national survey of Midlife in the United States (n = 3707, Mage = 55.80, 51% female at baseline), we examined longitudinal associations between contact frequency with friends and family, activity engagement (cognitive and physical activities), and cognition (episodic memory and executive functioning) to determine whether activity engagement mediates the relationship between contact frequency and cognition. RESULTS The longitudinal mediation model revealed that more frequent contact with friends, but not family, was associated with greater concurrent engagement in physical and cognitive activities, which were both associated with better episodic memory and executive functioning. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that time spent with friends may promote both cognitively and physically stimulating activities that could help to preserve not only these social relationships but also cognitive functioning.

Abstract
Dementia is a disorder that arouses major public health interest and concern. It has been projected that there will be a global increase in the number of people affected from about 46.8million in 2018 to 131million by 2050; global cost of care for 2015 was put at US$818 billion (Prince et al., 2015). Consequently, such development will lead to tremendous social and financial cost on family and society. Currently, there is no cure for dementia and that has led to increased research activities on prevention strategies, which often has to start with a number of midlife activities. These include regular exercise, diet, treatment of cardiovascular risk factors, and social and educational stimulation through life.

Abstract
Positive psychiatry is the science and practice of psychiatry that focuses on psycho-bio-social study and promotion of well-being and health through enhancement of positive psychosocial factors (such as resilience, optimism, wisdom, and social support) in people with illnesses or disabilities as well as the in community at large (Jeste and Palmer, 2015). It is based on the principles that there is no health without mental health and that mental health can be improved through preventive, therapeutic, and rehabilitative interventions to augment positive psychosocial factors. Positive psychiatry is not a naïve, feel-good pseudoscience that views the world through rose-colored glasses. It is an evidence-based approach to understanding normal behavior as well as psychopathology and to improving well-being by measuring and enhancing positive psychosocial factors (Jeste et al., 2015).
