Abstract
Research suggests that larger food portion sizes (PS) during a meal or snack increase daily energy intake in children. However, it remains unclear whether this 'PS effect' would lead to a sustained increase in consumption and affect body adiposity. This systematic review assesses the evidence for a relationship between served, consumed, and preferred PS (food or drink size in grams or kcal) and indexes of adiposity (e.g., BMI percentile, BMI z-scores) in children (< 19 years). A total of 17 articles were identified using six electronic databases (PsycINFO, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global). Articles were screened independently by 2 researchers; 21 studies were included (15 cross-sectional, 2 experimental, 1 case study, 1 longitudinal, and two interventions). A narrative review was conducted due to high levels of heterogeneity. Cross-sectional and experimental studies (n = 13) reported positive associations between PS and adiposity, but results differed according to the sex/gender of the participants and food type. Interventions (n = 2) showed that portion size reduction may be effective in reducing child adiposity. Due to the limited evidence on the causality and direction of the effect, and over-reliance on cross-sectional studies, more evidence on the longer-term impact of PS on indexes of body adiposity is required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study used latent class analysis (LCA) to examine the potential patterns of unhealthy lifestyle factors (ULFs) and their association with overweight and obesity in children and adolescents with overweight or obesity in China. METHODS We conducted three cross-sectional surveys, recruiting 7,927 children with obesity or overweight from September 2019 to January 2022. We used LCA to identify patterns of co-occurrence of ULFs based on seven types of behaviors. Multinomial logistic regression model was constructed to examine the association of fetal and neonatal factors with the clusters of ULFs. RESULTS Of 7,927 participants, 7,627 (96.78%) had at least one ULF, and 6,942 (87.57%) had two or more ULFs concurrently. Using LCA, four distinct clusters were identified based on the elbow point of the Akaike's information criterion (AIC), that is, "unhealthy food intake but long sleeping", "relative health", "healthy food intake but unhealthy eating-sleeping-sitting habits", and "unhealthy food intake and unhealthy sitting-activity habits". Moreover, several factors including sex, age, infancy feeding, parental obesity, and parental age were significantly associated with the clusters of ULFs. CONCLUSIONS We provide evidence on how multiple ULFs in combination may influence health among Chinese children and adolescents with overweight or obesity, and we agree that further external validations are warranted. Abstract
Background Understanding children's eating behaviors is crucial for elucidating the etiology of childhood obesity. However, the relationship between these behaviors and abdominal fat accumulation remains poorly understood. This study aims to investigate this association in primary school children. Methods This study included 1,475 children aged 8-10 years in Ningbo, China. Body composition was measured both at baseline (September 2022) and after 9 months of follow-up (June 2023). Primary caregivers completed the Children's Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ). A mixed-effects linear model was applied to analyze the relationships between children's eating behaviors and body composition. Results Greater visceral fat area (VFA) was associated with greater slowness in eating [β = 0.25 (0.02, 0.49)], greater food responsiveness [β = 0.29 (0.14, 0.43)], increased emotional undereating [β = 0.35 (0.17, 0.54)], and more emotional overeating [β = 0.21 (0.02, 0.39)]. Children with greater trunk fat mass (TrFM) tended to have greater food responsiveness [β = 0.02 (0.01, 0.03)] and greater enjoyment of food [β = 0.01 (0.00, 0.03)], increased emotional undereating [β = 0.02 (0.01, 0.03)] and emotional overeating [β = 0.02 (0.00, 0.03)]. Prospectively, positive correlations were observed between VFA and food responsiveness [β = 0.18 (0.02, 0.35)], as were emotional undereating [β = 0.31 (0.10, 0.52)] and emotional overeating [β = 0.24 (0.03, 0.46)]. Similarly, TrFM was positively correlated with food responsiveness [β = 0.02 (0.00, 0.03)], enjoyment of food [β = 0.02 (0.00, 0.04)], emotional undereating [β = 0.02 (0.01, 0.04)] and emotional overeating [β = 0.02 (0.01, 0.04)]. Conclusions Our findings suggest that eating behaviors are significantly associated with abdominal fat accumulation in primary school children. Addressing specific eating behaviors may be crucial in mitigating abdominal fat and its related health risks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Myopia and obesity in children and adolescents have become serious public health problems that endanger public health, especially in China. Unhealthy lifestyle behaviors are environmental drivers of both myopia and obesity. This protocol describes a study to evaluate the effectiveness of "22510SS", that is 2 h of daytime outdoor activities ('2'); Limit screen time to no more than 2 h per day ('2'); Consume at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily ('5'); Attain 1 h of physical activity daily ('1'); Consume 0 sugar-sweetened beverages ('0'); Reasonable sleep duration ('S'); Regular supervision ('S'). A school-based, multifaceted intervention strategy for myopia and obesity prevention, and to assess and explore the implementation of "22510SS" with regards to acceptability, feasibility, adoption, usage and maintenance. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This study aims to develop a comprehensive intervention strategy "22510SS" based on the socio-ecological model, and A two-arm cluster randomized trial with a parallel-group of a 1:1 allocation ratio in 36 primary and secondary schools to test its evidence-based intervention programs on the effects and implementation of myopia and obesity epidemics in children and adolescents in grades 4 and 7. The primary outcomes will include differences in visual acuity, body mass index, outdoor activity indicators, screen time, fruit and vegetable intake, high-quality protein intake, sugar-sweetened beverage intake, sleep duration, and level of monitoring among children and adolescents. Secondary outcomes will assess the acceptability, feasibility, uptake, use, and maintenance of the intervention. Effects on the primary and secondary outcomes will be analyzed using linear and logistic regression analyses, as well as difference-in-difference analysis, taking into account cluster effects and possible confounding factors. Process assessments will also be conducted through quantitative and qualitative analyses, including acceptability, feasibility, gender, adoption, implementation, and sustainability. DISCUSSION This study will evaluate the effectiveness of "22510SS" and examine its implementation in the school-based network nesting family and clinic. Following this intervention study, the integrated intervention program focused on myopia and obesity among children and adolescents have great potential to be implemented in China to promote and support healthy lifestyle behavior change and reduce the risk of myopia and obesity in children and adolescents. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify differences in schoolchildren's self-efficacy for eating behaviors across social settings and self-efficacy sources favoring healthy and unhealthy eating. DESIGN A cross-sectional, mixed-methods study using self-efficacy and demographic surveys, focus groups, and school environment semistructured observations. SETTING Morelos, Mexico, Cuernavaca City school district, public elementary schools in the National School Lunch Program. PARTICIPANTS AND RECRUITMENT We studied 274 fifth- and sixth-grade children from 8 elementary schools during the 2016-2017 school year. VARIABLES MEASURED Children's self-efficacy for healthy and unhealthy eating across 3 settings (school cafeteria, recess, and home). Children's perceptions about sources of self-efficacy, which favor their healthy or unhealthy eating (performance accomplishments, behavior modeling, verbal persuasion, and emotional or physiological states). Sociodemographic information was obtained from parents. ANALYSIS We performed a variance components analysis with school and students within schools as random effects with paired t tests (quantitative data) and content analysis on the basis of the Social Cognitive Theory (qualitative data). RESULTS Schoolchildren's self-efficacy for healthy eating differed across social settings, being greater in the school cafeteria than at recess or home, except for drinking water. On average, self-efficacy for unhealthy eating was lower in the cafeteria than in other studied settings. Performance achievements and behavior modeling were key sources of self-efficacy for healthy and unhealthy eating. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS Sources of self-efficacy and social settings matter to understanding schoolchildren's healthy and unhealthy eating. Future interventions might consider developing collective efficacy among the school community and boosting children's participation in home meal planning. Further research could explore locus of control and other intrapersonal dimensions influencing self-efficacy.

Effects of Developmental Failure of Swallowing Threshold on Obesity and Eating Behaviors in Children Aged 5-15 Years. Nutrients 2022; 14:nu14132614. Abstract
Background: The aim of the present study was to identify factors related to developmental failure of swallowing threshold in children aged 5−15 years. Methods: A total of 83 children aged 5−15 years were included in this study. A self-administered lifestyle questionnaire was completed, along with hand grip strength and oral function tests. Swallowing threshold was determined based on the concentration of dissolved glucose obtained from gummy jellies when the participants signaled that they wanted to swallow the chewed gummy jellies. Developmental failure of swallowing threshold was defined as glucose concentrations in the lowest 20th percentile. After univariate analysis, multivariate binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with developmental failure of swallowing threshold. Results: Hand grip strength was significantly correlated with masticatory performance (r = 0.611, p < 0.01). Logistic regression analysis revealed factors related to developmental failure of swallowing threshold, i.e., overweight/obesity (Odds ratio) (OR) = 5.343, p = 0.031, 95% CI = 1.168−24.437) and eating between meals at least once a day (OR = 4.934, p = 0.049, 95% CI = 1.004−24.244). Conclusions: Developmental failure of swallowing threshold was closely associated with childhood obesity in 5- to 15-year-old children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We adopted the machine-learning algorithms and deep-learning sequential model to determine and optimize most important factors for overweight and obesity in Chinese preschool-aged children. METHODS This is a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2020 at Beijing and Tangshan. Using a stratified cluster random sampling strategy, children aged 3-6 years were enrolled. Data were analyzed using the PyCharm and Python. RESULTS A total of 9478 children were eligible for inclusion, including 1250 children with overweight or obesity. All children were randomly divided into the training group and testing group at a 6:4 ratio. After comparison, support vector machine (SVM) outperformed the other algorithms (accuracy: 0.9457), followed by gradient boosting machine (GBM) (accuracy: 0.9454). As reflected by other 4 performance indexes, GBM had the highest F1 score (0.7748), followed by SVM with F1 score at 0.7731. After importance ranking, the top 5 factors seemed sufficient to obtain descent performance under GBM algorithm, including age, eating speed, number of relatives with obesity, sweet drinking, and paternal education. The performance of the top 5 factors was reinforced by the deep-learning sequential model. CONCLUSIONS We have identified 5 important factors that can be fed to GBM algorithm to better differentiate children with overweight or obesity from the general children, with decent prediction performance.

PURPOSE This study aimed to examine the association between eating speed and overweight in Chinese schoolchildren. METHODS In all, 664 schoolchildren (10-12 years) from three primary schools participated in this study in China. Their height and body weight were measured. Information about eating speed and other lifestyle behaviors were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Multivariable logistic regression model was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) for overweight. RESULTS Data from 629 students were analyzed. 26.2% of participants reported they were eating fast. The prevalence of overweight (including obesity) was 22.9%, and the mean of sleep duration was 9.69 (SD = 0.63) hours (Table 1). In the multiple linear regression analysis, slower eating speed was independently associated with lower BMI (B = - 0.70, 95% CI - 1.26 to - 0.14) and TG (B = - 0.16, 95% CI - 0.28 to - 0.04). In addition, participants who ate fast were more likely to be overweight (OR 1.81, 95% CI 1.19-2.75) after adjusting for potential confounding factors. CONCLUSIONS This study indicates that eating fast is associated with overweight among Chinese school children. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Cross-section descriptive study, Level V.

Abstract
Eating at a faster speed is positively correlated with having a higher BMI. Modifying eating speed may offer a treatment opportunity for those with overweight and obesity. This review sought to understand the feasibility, acceptability, and benefit to using eating speed interventions in paediatric clinical weight-management settings. The PICO Framework was used. Clinical studies of eating speed interventions as a treatment for paediatric patients with overweight or obesity were included. No limits to search date were implemented. A systematic search of MEDLINE, PsychINFO and EMBASE via OVID, Web of Science and JBI, Database of systematic reviews and Implementation reports, along with trial registers NICE, ClinicalTrials.gov and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials was conducted. Two authors were responsible for screening, extraction, and evaluation of the risk of bias. Fifteen papers reporting twelve interventions addressing eating-speed were identified, involving a total of 486 active participants (range 7-297). Study design was weak with only one full RCT and there were some concerns over quality and risk of bias (Cochrane RoB 2.0). Limited sample sizes and different measured outcomes did not allow powered evaluations of effect for all outcomes. There is some indication, overall, that addressing eating speed has the potential to be a beneficial adjunct to clinical obesity treatment, although the pooled effect estimate did not demonstrate a difference in BMISDS status following eating speed interventions compared to control [pooled mean difference (0.04, 95% CI -0.39 to 0.46, N = 3)]. Developments to improve the engagement to, and acceptability of, interventions are required, alongside rigorous high-quality trials to evaluate effectiveness.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that obesity in Israeli children is associated with chronically increased hunger and to examine for persistent abnormalities of satiation and between-meal satiety in these children. SUBJECTS/METHODS The parents of 200 children with obesity and 100 normal-weight children completed a questionnaire together with their child that rated hunger, food intake at main meal, and speed of eating. Time to hunger from the main meal was also recorded. Children with hunger ratings above 4 on a 7-point scale were considered to have persistent hunger. Food intake ratings at the main meal were used as an approximate indicator of satiation and time from main meal to feeling hunger as an approximate indicator of between-meal satiety. RESULTS There were marked differences between children with obesity and controls for hunger, food intake at main meal and speed of eating ratings (all p<0.001). The difference to time to hunger reached significance after adjusting for age and sex (p=0.048). 41% of the children with obesity had the highest rating for persistent hunger versus 5% of controls (p<0.001). CONCLUSION Persistent hunger, abnormal food intake at the main meal and rapid eating are common in children with obesity and are often of marked degree. These findings could have implications for understanding how pediatric obesity perpetuates itself and even worsens and its resistance to successful treatment over the long term.

Abstract
Increasing the speed of eating or decreasing the amount of chewing of a test meal significantly decreases its satiation, increases concomitant caloric intake, and influences entero-endocrine secretion. Speed of eating is a strong risk factor for obesity and longitudinal studies suggest an etiological relationship. Individuals with obesity have an increase in bite size, less chewing per bite, decreased satiation, and greater food intake. Oral processing in terms of bite size and amount of chewing per gram of food is influenced by food texture and textural complexity. Soft foods increase bite size and decrease chewing per gram of food and meal duration compared to hard foods. An ultra-processed diet can lead to greater weight gain than a non-processed diet and a significant increase in eating rate. Many children with obesity are noted by their parents to have persistent hunger on a questionnaire and this is often extreme. Results of attempts to change eating behavior have been mixed in terms of producing long-term changes in eating behavior and body weight. It is hypothesized that there may be a unidirectional relationship between changes in oral processing, satiation and weight gain. However, the presence of persistent hunger can produce a vicious cycle that may exacerbate obesity and make treatment difficult. The increased energy density of foods as found particularly in ultra-processed foods also influences energy intake and obesity.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the association of late bedtime and fast eating speed, both individually and interactively, in predicting overweight and obesity in Chinese preschool-aged children. This was a cross-sectional survey among children aged 3-6 years. Overweight and obesity is defined according to the WHO, IOTF, and China criteria, respectively. Total 1123 preschool-aged children were analyzed. After multivariable adjustment, late bedtime after 11:00 pm and fast eating speed increased the risk of overweight and obesity significantly under the WHO (odds ratio [OR]=1.92 and 1.37, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.31-2.80 and 1.00-1.88), IOTF (OR=1.47 and 1.46; 95% CI: 1.00-2.15 and 1.07-2.00), and China (OR=1.66 and 1.39; 95% CI: 1.20-2.29 and 1.07-1.80) criteria. Relative to bedtime before 11:00 pm and eating speed ≥30 min, there was a graded increase with presence of either bedtime after 11:00 pm or eating speed 15-30 min and <15 min. Particularly, the presence of both bedtime after 11:00 and eating speed <15 min yielded the largest OR under the WHO (adjusted OR, 95% CI: 3.98, 1.27-12.51), IOTF (3.59, 1.12-11.50), and China (4.84, 1.71-13.69) criteria. Taken together, our findings indicate a synergistic interaction between bedtime and eating speed in predicting overweight and obesity in Chinese preschool-aged children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Identifying the spatial patterns of childhood overweight/obesity (OW/OB) can help to guide resource allocation for preventive intervention in China. This study aims to estimate rates of childhood OW/OB across counties within Shandong Province, using geographic techniques to identify sex-specific spatial patterns of childhood OW/OB as well as the presence of spatial clusters. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Shandong Province in China. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS Data on 6 216 076 children and adolescents aged 7-18 years from the Primary and Secondary Schoolchildren Physical Examination Database for Shandong Province were used in this study. Spatial patterns of sex-specific prevalence of childhood OW/OB were mapped. Global autocorrelation statistic (Moran's I) and the Local Indicator of Spatial Association (LISA) were applied to assess the degree of spatial autocorrelation. RESULTS The overall prevalence of childhood OW/OB in Shandong province were 15.05% and 9.23%, respectively. Maps of the sex-specific prevalence of OW/OB demonstrate a marked geographical variation of childhood OW/OB in different regions. Prevalence of childhood OW/OB had a significant positive spatial autocorrelation among both boys and girls. LISA analysis identified significant clusters (or 'hot spots') of childhood OW/OB in the eastern coastal region, central region and southwestern region. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of childhood OW/OB is highly spatially clustered. Geographically focused appropriate intervention should be introduced in current childhood OW/OB prevention and control strategy.

Abstract
There is growing recognition that eating slowly is associated with a lower risk of obesity, and chewing well might be an effective way to reduce the eating rate. However, little is known about these relationships among children. We therefore investigated the associations of eating rate and chewing degree with weight status among 4451 Japanese children aged 5⁻6 years. Information on eating rate (slow, medium, or fast), degree of chewing (not well, medium, or well), and nutrient intake of children were collected from guardians using a diet history questionnaire. Weight status was defined using the International Obesity Task Force cut-offs based on BMI calculated from guardian-reported height and weight. The prevalence of overweight and thinness was 10.4% and 14.3%, respectively. A higher eating rate and a lower degree of chewing were associated with being overweight (both p < 0.001). Eating slowly was associated with being thin (p < 0.001), but no association was observed between chewing degree and thinness. These associations were still evident after controlling for potential confounders including parental educational attainment, weight status, and the child's nutrient intake. In conclusion, this cross-sectional study suggested that chewing well, rather than eating slowly, might be a more effective way for healthy weight management among Japanese preschool children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Eating rate is associated with BMI and weight gain in various populations, and is a factor modulating the risk of complications after bariatric surgery. The aim of the present study is to determine whether common difficulties to change eating rate in subjects with obesity candidate to bariatric surgery, could be due to more extensive abnormalities in eating behavior. METHODS A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 116 consecutive female patients attending a nutrition consultation for obesity in a specialized center in France. This questionnaire explored eating rate (on an analog 10-point analog scale; a score ≥ 7 defines rapid eating), degree of chewing, signs of prandial overeating and scores of emotionality, externality, and restrained eating. RESULTS Average age of the study population was 38.4 ± 12.7 years. Mean BMI was 45.5 ± 6.7, and eating rate was 6.3 ± 1.8. Rapid eating was present in 50.0% of the population. There was an inverse relationship between eating rate and degree of chewing (r = -0.59, p < 0.0001). The proportion of "rapid eating" patients was significantly higher among those who responded "all the time", "very often" or "often" (63.1%), as compared to "sometimes" or "never" (25.0%) to the question "Do you feel like you eat too much?" (p < 0.0001). There was a significant positive correlation between eating rate and emotional eating score (r = 0.30, p = 0.001) and external eating score (r = 0.30, p = 0.001), but not with restrained eating score. CONCLUSION These data show that rapid eating, by being potentially associated to emotional eating, must be considered as an important issue in bariatric surgery.

Abstract
Fast eating has been shown to increase the risk of overweight in both children and adults. The objectives of the present study were to investigate the correlation between chewing rate and the number of chews per mouthful and to evaluate if they were associated with the weight of meal intake. Thirty healthy subjects, aged 18-24 yr, ate a test lunch at their habitual speed until they felt satiated. The activities of masseter and suprahyoid muscles were recorded to determine the number of chews and the moment of swallowing. The weight of meal intake was recorded along with body mass index (BMI), chewing rate, number of chews per mouthful, meal duration, ingestion rate, hunger, and food preference levels. The mean weight (±SD) of meal intake, chewing rate, and number of chews per mouthful were 261.4 ± 78.9 g, 94.4 ± 13.5 chews min-1 , 19.2 ± 6.4 chews per mouthful, respectively. Chewing rate was not correlated with the number of chews per mouthful. The multivariable linear regression showed that meal intake was significantly positively associated with chewing rate, meal duration, and BMI, but inversely associated with the number of chews per mouthful (adjusted R2 = 0.42). It was concluded that the number of chews was not associated with chewing rate but meal intake was explained by both reduced number of chews and increased chewing rate.

Abstract
Eating faster is related to more energy intake, but less is known about the relationships between children's eating speed, food intake and adiposity, especially in high school children. This study aimed to investigate the associations of eating speed with general and abdominal obesity among Chinese children basing on a national survey. A total of 50,037 children aged 7-17 years were enrolled from 7 provinces in China in 2013. Anthropometric indices were objectively measured. Data on eating speed were collected by questionnaires. Increasing trends across the slow, medium, and fast eating speed group were observed in the prevalence of general obesity (7.2%, 10.0% and 15.9%), abdominal obesity (16.1%, 21.8%, and 29.4%) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) ≥ 0.5 (11.1%, 14.8%, and 22.0%). Compared with medium eating speed, fast eating speed was positively associated with obesity, abdominal obesity, and WHtR ≥ 0.5 (odds ratios [ORs]: 1.51~1.61), while slow eating speed was negatively associated with these outcomes (ORs: 0.65~0.75). Increased trends of consumption of fruits, meat/meat conducts, sugar-sweetened beverages, fried food, and fast food were observed in pace with increasing eating speed (P < 0.05). Our findings suggest that eating speed is positively associated with childhood general and abdominal obesity, which may be an important, modifiable factor to prevent childhood obesity.

Abstract
Background Research on the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MetS), its components and eating speed is limited in China. The present study aimed to clarify the association between MetS, its components and eating speed in a Beijing adult population. Methods This cross-sectional study included 7972 adults who were 18–65 years old and who received health check-ups at the Beijing Physical Examination Center in 2016. Logistic regression was conducted to explore the associations between MetS, its components and eating speed. Results The prevalence of MetS in this population was 24.65% (36.02% for males and 10.18% for females). Eating speed was significantly associated with a high risk for MetS, elevated blood pressure, and central obesity for both genders. Eating speed was associated with a high risk for elevated triglycerides and with a reduction in high-density lipoprotein in males, and eating speed was associated with a high risk for elevated fasting plasma glucose in females. Compared with slow eating speed, the multivariate-adjusted odds ratios of medium eating speed and fast eating speed for MetS were 1.65 (95% confidence interval 1.32–2.07) and 2.27 (95% confidence interval 1.80–2.86) for all subjects, 1.58 (95% confidence interval 1.21–2.07) and 2.21 (95% confidence interval 1.69–2.91) for males, and 1.75 (95% confidence interval 1.15–2.68) and 2.27 (95% confidence interval 1.46–3.53) for females, respectively. Conclusions Eating speed is positively associated with MetS and its components. Future recommendations aiming to prevent MetS and its components may focus on eating speed. Abstract
The possible effect of eating rate on promoting obesity has attracted considerable attention among various age groups, but little is known about these associations in an early stage of life. We investigated the hypothesis that eating rate in early childhood influences current and later body mass index (BMI) among young Japanese children. The study participants were 492 Japanese mother-child pairs from a prospective birth cohort study. Information on rate of eating (slow, medium, or fast), macronutrient intake (protein, fat, and carbohydrate), and dietary fiber intake were collected from the mothers using a diet history questionnaire when the children were aged 29 to 39 months. Height and weight as measured at 30 and 42 months of age were used to calculate BMI at each age. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to examine the relationships between eating rate in early childhood and BMI at 30 and 42 months. There were strong positive associations between eating rate and BMI at 30 and 42 months of age that were robust to adjustment for confounders including maternal BMI, socioeconomic status, health behaviors, and child's nutrient intake. In comparison with children in the "slow" rate of eating group, the size of the difference in BMI (95% confidence interval) at 42 months of age was 0.49 (0.17-0.80) and 0.67 (0.24-1.10) kg/m2 greater among children in the "medium" and "fast" groups, respectively. In conclusion, a higher rate of eating in early childhood was positively associated with not only current BMI but also BMI measured 1 year later in young Japanese children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood obesity has become a public health concern in many countries. In Southern China, the prevalence of childhood obesity increased from 6.2 to 7.5 % between 2007 and 2011. This study aimed to report the current prevalence of overweight and obesity, analyzed the early life and behavioral determinants of obesity, and investigated the weight-loss practices among Chinese children in Guangzhou. METHODS Three thousand seven hundred sixty-six primary school students aged 7-12 years were recruited in Guangzhou, China in 2013. Questionnaires were used to assess (1) early life factors: birth weight, delivery mode, gestational age and feeding patterns; (2) behavioral factors: dietary intake, eating speed, sedentary time, physical activities and sleep duration; and (3) weight-loss practices: improving diet, increasing exercise, taking weight-loss drugs and undergoing a diet. The criteria of Working Group of Obesity in China were applied to classify overweight and obesity based on measured weight and height. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the determinants of overweight/obesity and adoption of weight-loss practices. RESULTS The prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity were 11.2 and 10.0 %, respectively. High birth weight (≥4.0 kg versus 2.5 ~ 4.0 kg, odd ratio [OR]: 2.34; 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.53-3.58), sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) intake (OR: 1.39; 95 % CI: 1.05-1.85), vegetable intake (OR: 1.12; 95 % CI: 1.01-1.24), and doing homework (OR: 1.24; 95 % CI: 1.08-1.43) were positively associated with obesity. Eating speed faster than peers was positively associated with obesity and yielded the highest OR (versus "as fast as peers", OR: 3.18; 95 % CI: 2.28-4.44). Approximately 57, 81 and 87 % of normal-weight, overweight and obese children, respectively, reported weight-loss practices. Self-perception of weight status presented as the strongest determinant for weight-loss practices. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of overweight and obesity were high in Chinese children in Guangzhou, and both were higher than previous level in 2011. Further research should address the unhealthy dietary (e.g. SSBs intake, fast eating speed) and sedentary behaviors (e.g. doing homework) of these children. Moreover, an accurate perception of body weight can help promote the adoption of weight-loss practices in overweight and obese children.

Abstract
The importance of the circadian rhythm in regulating human food intake behaviour and metabolism has long been recognised. However, little is known as to how energy intake is distributed over the day in existing populations, and its potential association with obesity. The present review describes global trends in time-of-day of energy intake in the general population based on data from cross-sectional surveys and longitudinal cohorts. Evidence of the association between time-of-day of energy intake and obesity is also summarised. Overall, there were a limited number of cross-sectional surveys and longitudinal cohorts that provided data on time-of-day of energy intake. In the identified studies, a wide variation in time-of-day of energy intake was observed, with patterns of energy distribution varying greatly by country and geographical area. In relation to obesity, eight cross-sectional surveys and two longitudinal cohorts were identified. The association between time-of-day of energy intake and obesity varied widely, with several studies reporting a positive link between evening energy intake and obesity. In conclusion, the current review summarises global trends in time-of-day of energy intake. The large variations across countries and global regions could have important implications to health, emphasising the need to understand the socio-environmental factors guiding such differences in eating patterns. Evidence of the association between time-of-day of energy intake and BMI also varied. Further larger scale collaborations between various countries and regions are needed to sum data from existing surveys and cohorts, and guide our understanding of the role of chrono-nutrition in health.

Abstract
Accidentally biting hard on a piece of hard foreign object in food is among the causes of tooth fracturing and could be associated with oral sensibility. This study has investigated the effect of chewing speed on the ability to detect a foreign object in food in human. Fourteen healthy subjects were asked to randomly chew one of 10 cooked rice balls, five of which containing a foreign object made from a tiny uncooked rice grain, until they detected the rice grain. Each subject chewed the test foods both at 50 (slow) and 100 (fast) chews min(-1). The accuracy of detection and the number of chews before detection (CBD) were recorded and compared between the two chewing speeds using paired t-tests. The results showed that almost all subjects detected the foreign object by biting. The accuracy of detection was more than 90% and not significantly different between slow and fast chewing but the mean CBD in slow chewing (11·7 ± 1·3 chews) was significantly different from that in fast chewing (20·7 ± 1·9 chews; P < 0·001). The study showed that slow chewers required less number of chews before a foreign object in food could be detected and was, presumably, more effective in detecting the object compared to fast chewers. If each chew bears equal probability of teeth encountering the foreign object, slow chewing might also reduce the chance of accidentally biting hard on the foreign object and fracturing the tooth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We examined whether dietary energy intake (EI) and dietary energy density (ED) were cross-sectionally associated with body composition of children living in Southwest China. DESIGN AND METHODS Multivariate regression analyses were performed on three day, 24 h dietary recall data and information on potential confounders from 1207 participants aged 8-14 years. EI was calculated from all foods and drinks and ED was classified into five categories. Body mass index (BMI) z-scores, percentage of body fat (%BF), fat mass index (FMI), fat-free mass index (FFMI) and ratio of waist to hip circumference (WHR) were used to describe body composition. RESULTS Boys with higher total EI had higher BMI z-scores, %BF, and FMI than boys with lower total EI both before and after measurements were adjusted for confounders (age, fiber intake, physical activity, the timing of adding complementary foods, paternal education level and maternal BMI) (p ≤ 0.04). However, EI was not associated with body composition in girls. Dietary ED, in any category, was not associated with body composition in either gender. CONCLUSIONS Dietary ED was not associated with body composition of children in Southwest China, while dietary EI in boys, not girls, was positively associated with body composition. Reducing dietary energy intake may help to prevent obesity and related diseases in later life among boys living in Southwest China.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify key eating behaviours in children and their parents and to determine the associations between these behaviours and measures of body composition in children. METHODS Data were collected on a sample of 431 peri-adolescent children (12.4±0.3 years) and their parents from the Niagara Region. Body composition was assessed by trained research assistants. Eating behaviours were assessed using a revised version of the Family Eating and Activity Habits Questionnaire. Principal component analyses were used to identify key eating behaviours among children, mothers and fathers. Linear regression models were used to assess their associations with body mass index (BMI), waist-to-height ratio, waist-to-hip ratio, waist girth, and hip girth measures in children. RESULTS Emotional/uncontrolled eating and eating by the television in children and their mothers were positively associated with measures of body composition in children. Other eating behaviours that were associated with larger measures of body composition in children included low frequency of eating meals with parents, frequent sweet beverage consumption and snacking and eating "on-the-go" in children, eating "on-the-go" in mothers, and emotional eating and eating by the television/late at night in fathers. CONCLUSIONS The eating behaviours of children and mothers, and to a lesser degree fathers, are important predictors of children's body composition. Public health interventions designed to help mothers and children reduce the frequency of emotional/uncontrolled eating and eating by the television may be effective means of facilitating positive weight outcomes in children.
