Abstract
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common hematological malignancy affecting pediatric patients. ALL treatment regimens with cytostatics manifest substantial toxicity and have reached the maximum of well-tolerated doses. One potential approach for improving treatment efficiency could be supplementation of the current regimen with naturally occurring phytochemicals with anti-cancer properties. Nutraceuticals such as quercetin, curcumin, resveratrol, and genistein have been studied in anti-cancer therapy, but their application is limited by their low bioavailability. However, their cooperative activity could potentially increase their efficiency at low, bioavailable doses. We studied their cooperative effect on the viability of a human ALL MOLT-4 cell line in vitro at the concentration considered to be in the bioavailable range in vivo. To analyze their potential side effect on the viability of non-tumor cells, we evaluated their toxicity on a normal human foreskin fibroblast cell line (BJ). In both cell lines, we also measured specific indicators of cell death, changes in cell membrane permeability (CMP), and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). Even at a low bioavailable concentration, genistein and curcumin decreased MOLT-4 viability, and their combination had a significant interactive effect. While resveratrol and quercetin did not affect MOLT-4 viability, together they enhanced the effect of the genistein/curcumin mix, significantly inhibiting MOLT-4 population growth in vitro. Moreover, the analyzed phytochemicals and their combinations did not affect the BJ cell line. In both cell lines, they induced a decrease in MMP and correlating CMP changes, but in non-tumor cells, both metabolic activity and cell membrane continuity were restored in time. (4) Conclusions: The results indicate that the interactive activity of analyzed phytochemicals can induce an anti-cancer effect on ALL cells without a significant effect on non-tumor cells. It implies that the application of the combinations of phytochemicals an anti-cancer treatment supplement could be worth further investigation regardless of their low bioavailability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Food is indispensable for human life and determines the health and wellbeing of the consumer. As food is the source of energy for humans, it also emerges as one of the most important sources of exposure to deleterious chemicals both natural and synthetic. The food exposed chemicals cause a number of detrimental health effects in humans, with endocrine disruption being of serious concern amongst these effects. Such chemicals disrupting the health of endocrine system are known as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The food exposed EDCs need to be identified and classified to effectuate a cautious consumption of food by all and especially by vulnerable groups. AIM The aim of the present review was to discuss food as a source of exposure to common endocrine disruptors in humans. This review presents the occurrence and levels of some of the critical endocrine disruptors exposed through frequently consumed diets. METHODS The major source of data was PubMed, besides other relevant publications. The focus was laid on data from the last five years, however significant earlier data was also considered. CONCLUSION The food as a source of endocrine disruptors to humans cannot be neglected. It is highly imperative for the consumer to recognize food as a source of EDCs and make informed choices in the consumption of food items.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of meteorological conditions on resveratrol concentration of red wines produced in Piacenza viticultural region (Italy). In this regard, six representative estates producing Colli Piacentini Gutturnio DOC (a blend of V. vinifera L. cvs. Barbera and Croatina) vintage wines were analysed for trans- and cis-resveratrol over an 8-year period (1998–2005). Grapes were taken from the same vineyard in each estate by using the same enological practices over the entire investigated period. The meteorological conditions corresponding to the production areas were recorded, and bioclimatic indices were calculated as well. Overall, cis-resveratrol concentration was negatively correlated to Huglin index and August mean temperature, whilst positive correlation coefficients were found when considering the Selianinov index and the rainfall of September.

Abstract
This study presents the results of conventional aqueous (CE) and non-conventional ultrasound-assisted (UAE) extractions of polyphenolic compounds from lees extracts of red wine varieties (Merlot and Vranac). The effect of ultrasound extraction time (t, s), and amplitude (A,%) from a 400 W ultrasound processor with different ultrasonic probes diameters (Ds, mm) on the amount and profile of polyphenolic compounds in the obtained extracts was investigated and compared to CE. The optimal conditions resulting in maximum extraction of phenolic compounds were: Probe diameter of 22 mm, amplitude 90% and extraction time for Vranac wine lees 1500 s and for Merlot wine lees extraction time of 1361 s. UAE proved to be significantly more effective in enhancing the extraction capacity of trans-resveratrol glucoside (30.57% to 300%), trans-resveratrol (36.36% to 45.75%), quercetin (39.94% to 43.83%), kaempferol (65.13% to 72.73%), petunidin-3-glucoside (41.53% to 64.95%), malvidin-3-glucoside (47.63% to 89.17%), malvidin-3-(6-O-acetyl) glucoside (23.84% to 49.74%), and malvidin-3-(6-O-p-coumaroyl) glucoside (26.77% to 34.93%) as compared to CE. Ultrasound reduced the extraction time (2.5-fold) and showed an increase of antioxidant potential by 76.39% (DPPH) and 125.83% (FRAP) compared to CE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The devastating effects of heavy alcohol drinking have been long time recognized. In the last decades, potential benefits of modest red wine drinking were suggested. In European countries in which red wide intake is not negligible (such as France), the association between cholesterol and cardiovascular (CV) risk was less evident, suggesting the action of some protective molecules in red wine or other foods and drinks. METHODS This narrative review is based on the material searched for and obtained via PubMed up to May 2016. The search terms we used were: "red wine, cardiovascular, alcohol" in combination with "polyphenols, heart failure, infarction". RESULTS Epidemiological and mechanistic evidence of a J-shaped relationship between red wine intake and CV risk further supported the "French paradox". Specific components of red wine both in vitro and in animal models were discovered. Polyphenols and especially resveratrol largely contribute to CV prevention mainly through antioxidant properties. They exert beneficial effects on endothelial dysfunction and hypertension, dyslipidemia, metabolic diseases, thus reducing the risk of adverse CV events such as myocardial infarction ischemic stroke and heart failure. Of interest, recent studies pointed out the role of ethanol itself as a potential cardioprotective agent, but a clear epidemiological evidence is still missing. The aim of this narrative review is to update current knowledge on the intracellular mechanism underlying the cardioprotective effects of polyphenols and ethanol. Furthermore, we summarized the results of epidemiological studies, emphasizing their methodological criticisms and the need for randomized clinical trials able to clarify the potential role of red wine consumption in reducing CV risk. CONCLUSION Caution in avowing underestimation of the global burden of alcohol-related diseases was particularly used.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Wine is a dietary source of polyphenolic compounds with reported health benefits when moderately consumed. Several of these compounds can associate with metals forming complexes. Therefore, this work was conducted to reach a better understanding of the nature and chemical stability of wine-derived Fe(3+)-quercetin complexes in a digestion model. The stability of the complexes in a synthetic (simulated) wine was studied before and after in vitro gastric and intestinal digestions by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV-Vis detection. Metal determination was performed by atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) to evaluate possible dissociation of complexes. During HPLC analysis all peaks eluted from the chromatographic column were collected, acidified, and analyzed by ETAAS. The results showed that complexes remain substantially stable after gastric digestion conditions, with recoveries of 84% to 90%. Although metal complexes were partially degraded during intestinal digestion, 41% to 45% of the Fe(3+)-quercetin complexes was recovered. PRACTICAL APPLICATION This work reveals the chemical stability of Fe3+–quercetin complexes in synthetic wines after an in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. The knowledge of this process would be useful to understand the bioavailability of these compounds.

Abstract
SCOPE Many intracellular functions have been attributed to resveratrol, a polyphenolic phytoalexin found in grapes and in other plants, including the regulation of transcription. Here, we have analyzed the impact of resveratrol on the activity of the transcription factor activator protein-1 (AP-1). METHODS AND RESULTS Using a chromosomally embedded AP-1-responsive reporter gene, we show that the AP-1 activity was significantly elevated in resveratrol-treated 293 human embryonic kidney and HepG2 hepatoma cells. The 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate-responsive element, a binding site for c-Jun and c-Fos, was identified as resveratrol-responsive element. Expression of c-Jun and c-Fos, two proteins that constitute AP-1, is upregulated in resveratrol-stimulated HEK293 cells. On the transcriptional level, c-Jun and the ternary complex factor Elk-1 are essential for the activation of AP-1 in resveratrol-treated cells. In addition, mitogen-activated protein kinases and protein kinase C are required to connect resveratrol stimulation with enhanced AP-1 controlled transcription. Finally, we show that resveratrol increased the activities of the AP-1 responsive cyclin D1 and tumor necrosis factor α promoters. CONCLUSION Resveratrol regulates gene transcription via activation of stimulus-regulated protein kinases and the stimulus-responsive AP-1 transcription factors. The fact that resveratrol regulates AP-1 activity may explain many of the pleiotropic intracellular alterations induced by resveratrol.

Abstract
In this work, we report the identification and quantification of catechins by electrochemistry and UV-Vis spectroscopy in Elephantorrhiza elephantina (Fabaceae) and Pentanisia prunelloides (Rubiaceae), both of which are medicinal plants that are widely used in Southern Africa to remedy various ailments. A comparative study of the catechin content as (-)-epicatechin equivalent is reported for the first time, with E. elephantina exhibiting a higher concentration relative to P. prunelloides in both aqueous and methanol extracts.

Abstract
Resveratrol, a natural phenolic compound found in red grapes and wine, exists as cis and trans isomers. Recent studies have shown that trans-resveratrol possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogenic, anti-tumor and immunomodulatory properties. However, it remains unclear whether cis-resveratrol may exhibit similar activities. The objective of the present study was to examine the effects of cis- and trans-resveratrol on the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators in human macrophages. We examined the possibility that cis- and trans-resveratrol may affect cytokine secretion by modulating inflammasomes, intracellular multi-protein complexes, the assembly of which leads to caspase-1 activation and secretion of active IL-1β by macrophages. Our results show that pre-treatment of macrophages with cis-resveratrol not only reduces pro-IL-1β production and IL-1β secretion, but also suppresses ATP-induced transcription and activation of caspase-1 and caspase-4. Notably, cis-resveratrol inhibits the expression of the purinergic receptor, P2X7R, and the endoplasmic reticulum stress marker, Glc-regulated protein 78, but also reduces reactive oxygen species production. Moreover, cis-resveratrol attenuates cyclooxygenase-2 expression and prostaglandin E2 production. cis-Resveratrol also decreases the phosphorylation of p38 MAPK and expression of the c-Jun protein. These results indicate that cis-resveratrol produces anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting both the canonical and non-canonical inflammasomes, and associated pathways in human macrophages.

Abstract
Campania region has always been considered one of the most appreciated Italian districts for wine production. Wine distinctiveness arises from their native grapevines. To better define the chemical profile of Campania autochthonous red grape varieties, we analysed the phenolic composition of Aglianico di Taurasi, Aglianico del Vulture, Aglianico del Taburno, Piedirosso wines, and a minor native variety, Lingua di Femmina in comparison with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, as reference cultivars. A genetic profiling was also carried out using microsatellite molecular markers with high polymorphic and unambiguous profiles. Principal component analysis applied to 72 wines based on the 18 biochemical parameters, explained 77.6% of the total variance and highlighted important biological entities providing insightful patterns. Moreover, comparison of SSR-based data with phenylpropanoid molecules exhibited a statistically significant correlation. Our approach might be reasonably adopted for future characterisations and traceability of grapevines and corresponding wines.

Abstract
A simple, accurate, precise, sensitive, and reproducible high-performance liquid chromatography method was developed for the determination of Resveratrol (trans-3, 4’,5-trihydroxystilbene) in human plasma using liquid-liquid extraction. Caffeine was employed as an internal standard (IS). However, little information is known about its distribution in the organism generally because of the lack of accurate and precise detection methods. The chromatographic separation was achieved on a Phenomenex C18 column (250 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) at room temperature in isocratic mode, and the column effluent was monitored by UV detector at 306 nm. The mobile phase used was methanol: phosphate buffer (pH 6.8 adjusted with 0.5% (v/v) orthophosphoric acid solution in Milli-Q water) (63:37%, v/v) at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min. Nominal retention times of trans-resveratrol and IS were 3.94 and 7.86 minutes, respectively. Limits of detection and Limits of quantification of trans-resveratrol were 0.006 μg/ml and 0.008 μg/ml, respectively. This method was linear over the range of 0.010 to 6.4 μg/ml with regression coefficient greater than 0.9998. The inter- and intra-day precisions in the samples, 0.010, 3.2 and 6.4 μg/ml of trans-resveratrol was in the range 0.63 to 2.12% relative standard deviation (RSD) and 0.46 to 1.02% RSD, respectively. Resveratrol was found to be stable for a period of 15 days on storage at -20°C. The method was found to be precise, accurate, and specific during the study.

Abstract
Phytoestrogens are non steroidal compounds that can bind to estrogen receptors, mimicking some effects of estradiol (E(2)). These compounds are widespread among legumes, which are used as pasture, and their importance in animal agriculture has increased. Mesquite (Prosopis sp) is a widespread legume, widely used to feed several livestock species in Mexico. The main product of mesquite is the pod, which is considered high quality food. As a legume, it could be assumed that mesquite contains some amounts of phytoestrogens which might induce potential estrogenic effects. However, to our knowledge, there are no reports regarding the possible estrogenic activity of this legume either in livestock or in animal models such as the rat. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the potential estrogenic effects of mesquite pod extract on several aspects of behavior and reproductive physiology of the female rat. The effects of the extract were compared with those of E(2) and two isoflavones: daidzein (DAI) and genistein (GEN). The following treatments were given to groups of intact and ovariectomized (OVX) female rats: vehicle; mesquite pod extract; E(2); GEN; DAI. Compared to vehicle groups, mesquite pod extract, DAI, GEN, and E(2) increased uterine weight and induced growth in vaginal and uterine epithelia. In intact rats, mesquite pod extract, GEN and DAI altered estrous cyclicity, decreased lordotic quotient and intensity of lordosis. In OVX rats, mesquite pod extract, DAI and GEN induced vaginal estrus, increased vaginal epithelium height, and induced lordosis, although its intensity was reduced, compared with intact rats in estrus and E2-treated rats. These results suggest that mesquite pod extract could have estrogenic activity. However, the presence of phytoestrogens in this legume remains to be confirmed.

Abstract
A polyphenol biosensor employing epoxy resin membrane bound Ganoderma sp. laccase has been developed. The biosensor showed optimum response within 30 s, when operated at 0.4 V in 0.1 M acetate buffer, pH 6.0 and 35 °C. Detection limit of the biosensor was 3.0 x 10-7 M. Analytical recovery of added guaiacol was 96.66%. Within batch and between batch coefficients of variation were <1.35% and <2.97% respectively. The biosensor was employed for amperometric determination of polyphenols in fruit juices and alcoholic beverages. The enzyme electrode was used 200 times over a period of 10 months, when stored at 4 °C.

Abstract
Functional foods may be regarded as foods that have nutritional value, but in particular, they also have beneficial effects on one or more body functions. Thus, functional foods may improve health and/or reduce the risk of developing certain diseases when taken in amounts that can be consumed in a normal diet. Based on nearly 2 decades of research since the term "French paradox" was first coined in 1992, wine would appear to fit this definition. Yet there seems to be reluctance to consider wine as a functional food. In this review, we present an overview of the accumulated evidence for the health benefits of wine-and its key phenolic components such as resveratrol, quercetin, catechin-and show that these alone are not enough to firmly establish wine as a functional food. What is required is to create clearly defined products based on wine that are targeted to consumers' needs and expectations when it comes to purchasing functional foods. Moreover, the crucial question of alcohol and health also needs to be addressed by the functional food industry. Suggestions are presented for working through this issue, but in many regards, wine is like any other food-it should be consumed sensibly and in amounts that are beneficial to health. Overindulgence of any kind does not promote good health.

Abstract
Stilbenes are phytoalexins that become activated when plants are stressed. These compounds exist in foods and are widely consumed. Resveratrol is a grape-derived stilbene, which possesses a wide range of health-promoting activities, including anticancer properties. Several other stilbenes structurally similar to resveratrol are also available in food, but their biological activities remain largely unknown. In this study, we compared the effects of resveratrol and its natural derivatives pterostilbene, trans-resveratrol trimethylether, trans-pinostilbene and trans-desoxyrhapontigenin on androgen-responsive human prostate cancer LNCaP cells. We found that these compounds exert differential effects on LNCaP cell growth, cell cycle and apoptosis. Trans-resveratrol trimethylether appeared to be the most potent compound among the stilbenes tested. Treatment of LNCaP cells with trans-resveratrol trimethylether resulted in G2/M blockage while other compounds, including resveratrol, induced G1/S arrest. Moreover, different from other compounds, trans-resveratrol trimethylether induced apoptosis. At the molecular level, the effects of these compounds on cell cycle correlated with induction of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 1A and B mRNA levels. Additionally, these compounds also inhibited both androgen- as well as estrogen-mediated pathways. These results provide mechanistic information on how resveratrol and its methylether analogs may act to contribute to potential antiprostate cancer activity.

Abstract
Phytoceuticals (non-nutritional but beneficial plant chemicals) merit investigation as pharmacotherapy for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Although asthma is mostly treated adequately, COPD is not. Thus, there is a need for new drugs with improved therapeutic benefit, especially in COPD. Recent interest in herbal remedies has redirected attention towards plants as sources of improved treatments for lung disease. Phytoceuticals from a variety of plants and plant products, including butterbur, English ivy, apples, chocolate, green tea and red wine, demonstrate broad-spectrum pharmacotherapeutic activities that could be exploited in the clinic. Well-designed clinical trials are required to determine whether these beneficial activities are reproduced in patients, with the prospect that phytoceuticals are the new physic garden for asthma and COPD.

Abstract
Epidemiological and experimental studies have revealed that a mild to moderate drinking of wine, particularly red wine, attenuates the cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and peripheral vascular risk. However, the experimental basis for such health benefits is not fully understood. The cardioprotective effect of wine has been attributed to both components of wine: the alcoholic portion and, more importantly, the alcohol-free portion containing antioxidants. Wines are manufactured from grapes, which also contain a large variety of antioxidants, including resveratrol, catechin, epicatechin, and proanthocyanidins. Resveratrol is mainly found in the grape skin, whereas proanthocyanidins are found only in the seeds. Recent studies have demonstrated that resveratrol and proanthocyanidin are the major compounds present in grapes and wines responsible for cardioprotection. The purpose of this review is to provide evidence that grapes, wines, and resveratrol are equally important in reducing the risk of morbidity and mortality due to cardiovascular complications. Both wines and grapes can attenuate cardiac diseases such as atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease. Recently, wine was also found to increase life span by inducing longevity genes. It appears that resveratrol and proanthocyanidins, especially resveratrol, present in grapes and wines play a crucial role in cardioprotective abilities of grapes and wines.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was designed to investigate the effects of genistein on genioglossal muscle function and the expression of oestrogen receptors (ERs) in the ovariectomized rats. DESIGN Fifty female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: the control group (SHAM), the ovariectomized group (OVX), the ovariectomized rats receiving low genistein dosage (OVX+L), the moderate genistein dosage group (OVX+M) and the high genistein dosage group (OVX+H). Oestradiol level was detected by radioimmunity. The isometric twitch tension (P(t)) and tetanic tension (P(0)) of the GG muscle were measured in response to electrical field stimulation. The expression of ERs on the mRNA and protein levels was measured by real-time PCR and western blot respectively. RESULTS Ovariectomy decreased muscle fatigue resistance and the expression of different ERs significantly. Genistein treatment resulted in a dose-dependent protective effect on muscle fatigability and a parallel dose-responsive increase in the expression of oestrogen receptors mRNA and protein levels in genioglossus, with larger effects on oestrogen receptor beta vs. alpha. In contrast to the improvements in fatigability, there was no treatment effect on isometric twitch or tetanic tensions. CONCLUSION The results indicated that genistein increased muscle fatigue resistance in addition to effects on receptors, and the up-regulation of receptors expression may be a possible mechanism by which genistein improved fatigue.

Abstract
Quantitative and qualitative changes in the phenolic composition of red wine may occur during digestion in the lumen, particularly when other dietary components are present. In this study, mixtures of red wine, iron, and ascorbic acid, meat or casein were subjected to a simulated gastrointestinal digestion. This process involves incubation of samples for 4.5 h at 37 degrees C, at different pH values, in the presence of peptic enzymes and fractionation of digests through a dialysis membrane with a molecular weight cut-off of 6000-8000. Selected phenolic compounds were determined in undigested samples and in their dialysable digests by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. A dramatic decrease in the concentration of the selected phenolic compounds was observed in all samples after they were digested in vitro. Moreover, when iron and/or protein were added to red wine samples, changes in the phenolic profile of the undigested and of the in vitro digested samples were detected. These results suggest that interactions between red wine phenolic compounds and iron, protein and/or digestion components are important determinants of the physicochemical properties and the concentration of these phenolic compounds in the lumen. The in vitro methodology employed herein offers a tool for the study of phenolic compounds under conditions of simulated gastrointestinal digestion, incorporating lumenal events that may affect phenolic compounds.

Abstract
Resveratrol (RSV), a naturally occurring phytoalexin that can be found in red wine, berries, and peanuts, has been shown to extend both mean and maximum life span in model organisms. RSV has also been reported to shift the physiology of middle-aged mice on a high-calorie diet toward that of mice on a standard diet. These beneficial effects of RSV have been suggested to resemble caloric restriction. Our study in F2 four-way cross-hybrid mice was the first to evaluate the effects of aging and long-term RSV treatment (14.09+/-3.4 mg/L in drinking water for 6 or 12 months) on biomarkers of oxidative damage to DNA, 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8OHdG); lipid, 8-iso-prostaglandin(2 alpha) (8-iso-PGF(2 alpha)); and protein, protein carbonyl content (PCC). There was a significant age-dependent accumulation of oxidative damage to DNA, lipid, and protein as well as a clear increase in urine 8-iso-PGF(2 alpha) levels in the majority of mouse tissues. Rates of age-dependent increases in damage biomarkers varied between tissues. Chronic RSV treatment elevated total RSV plasma levels and reduced the observed age-dependent accumulation of (1) 8OHdG in liver and heart, (2) 8-iso-PGF(2 alpha) in heart and urine, and (3) PCC in liver and kidney. However, a 12-month RSV intake resulted in significant elevation of 8-iso-PGF(2 alpha) and PCC in kidney. Our studies demonstrate that RSV treatment consistently attenuated oxidative damage in tissues where age-related oxidative damage accumulation was prominent, but also suggested that chronic RSV treatment may induce nephrotoxicity.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common neurodegenerative disorder in the aged, is characterized by the cerebral deposition of fibrils formed by the amyloid beta-protein (Abeta), a 40-42 amino acid peptide. The folding of Abeta into neurotoxic oligomeric, protofibrillar, and fibrillar assemblies is hypothesized to be the key pathologic event in AD. Abeta is formed through cleavage of the Abeta precursor protein by two endoproteinases, beta-secretase and gamma-secretase, that cleave the Abeta N-terminus and C-terminus, respectively. These facts support the relevance of therapeutic strategies targeting Abeta production, assembly, clearance, and neurotoxicity. Currently, no disease-modifying therapeutic agents are available for AD patients. Instead, existing therapeutics provide only modest symptomatic benefits for a limited time. We summarize here recent efforts to produce therapeutic drugs targeting Abeta assembly. A number of approaches are being used in these efforts, including immunological, nutraceutical, and more classical medicinal chemical (peptidic inhibitors, carbohydrate-containing compounds, polyamines, "drug-like" compounds, chaperones, metal chelators, and osmolytes), and many of these have progressed to phase III clinical trails. We also discuss briefly a number of less mature, but intriguing, strategies that have therapeutic potential. Although initial trials of some disease-modifying agents have failed, we argue that substantial cause for optimism exists.

Abstract
In this study, five biologically phenolic antioxidant Turkish red wines from different regions of Turkey were determined using HPLC with PDA detection. The antioxidant capacities (AC) of the investigated wines are also determined and the relationship between the phenol content and antioxidant capacity is discussed. The results show that Kalecik Karası, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon AC values ranged between 15.8-18.7 mmol/L, 15.8-17.6 mmol/L and 18.1-22.6 mmol/L, respectively. Generally, Cabernet Sauvignon wines not only had higher levels of phenolic antioxidants, such as catechin, epicatechin and gallic acid, but also higher antioxidant capacities compared to Kalecik Karası and Merlot wines. When the results were compared on the basis of geographical area, Aegean red wines were found to contain generally higher levels of biologically important phenolics and thus to have more antioxidant capacity compared to the wines of the other regions studied.

Abstract
Resveratrol is a phytochemical that has been under consideration for use as a prostate cancer chemopreventive agent. However, the efficacy, as well as the mechanisms of action of resveratrol on prostate cancer prevention, remains largely unknown. This study seeks to address these questions and examine the cancer preventive effects of resveratrol using complementary human LNCaP prostate cancer cell culture and xenograft models. In cultured LNCaP cells, we found that resveratrol inhibited cell growth. The growth inhibitory effects of resveratrol appeared to be through modulation of both androgen- and estrogen-mediated events. Global gene expression analysis using microarrays identified androgen-responsive genes as a group of genes universally affected by resveratrol in LNCaP cells in vitro. The effect of resveratrol on expression of these genes appeared to be through inhibition of both androgen- and estrogen-mediated transcription. In a xenograft model, resveratrol delayed LNCaP tumor growth and inhibited expression of a marker for steroid hormone responses. However, exposure to resveratrol also led to increased angiogenesis and inhibition of apoptosis in the xenograft. In summary, resveratrol may act through modulation of steroid hormone-dependent pathways to inhibit prostate cancer cell growth in both culture and xenografts, but exposure in vivo may be of concern.
