A DNA and Self-Doped Conjugated Polyelectrolyte Assembled for Organic Optoelectronics and Bioelectronics

Engineering Proteins for PEDOT Dispersions: A New Horizon for Highly Mixed Ionic-Electronic Biocompatible Conducting Materials

Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) is the most used conducting polymer from energy to biomedical applications. Despite its exceptional properties, there is a need for developing new materials that can improve some of its inherent limitations, e.g., biocompatibility. In this context, doping PEDOT is propose with a robust recombinant protein with tunable properties, the consensus tetratricopeptide repeated protein (CTPR). The doping consists of an oxidative polymerization, where the PEDOT chains are stabilized by the negative charges of the CTPR protein. CTPR proteins are evaluated with three different lengths (3, 10, and 20 identical CTPR units) and optimized varied synthetic conditions. These findings revealed higher doping rate and oxidized state of the PEDOT chains when doped with the smallest scaffold (CTPR3). These PEDOT:CTPR hybrids possess ionic and electronic conductivity. Notably, PEDOT:CTPR3 displayed an electronic conductivity of 0.016 S cm-1, higher than any other reported protein-doped PEDOT. This result places PEDOT:CTPR3 at the level of PEDOT-biopolymer hybrids, and brings it closer in performance to PEDOT:PSS gold standard. Furthermore, PEDOT:CTPR3 dispersion is successfully optimized for inkjet printing, preserving its electroactivity properties after printing. This approach opens the door to the use of these novel hybrids for bioelectronics.

Phase Behavior and Role of Organic Additives for Self-Doped CsPbI3 Perovskite Semiconductor Thin Films

The phase change of all-inorganic cesium lead halide (CsPbI3) thin film from yellow δ-phase to black γ-/α-phase has been a topic of interest in the perovskite optoelectronics field. Here, the main focus is how to secure a black perovskite phase by avoiding a yellow one. In this work, we fabricated a self-doped CsPbI3 thin film by incorporating an excess cesium iodide (CsI) into the perovskite precursor solution. Then, we studied the effect of organic additive such as 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO), 1-chloronaphthalene (CN), and 1,8-octanedithiol (ODT) on the optical, structural, and morphological properties. Specifically, for elucidating the binary additive-solvent solution thermodynamics, we employed the Flory-Huggins theory based on the oligomer level of additives' molar mass. Resultantly, we found that the miscibility of additive-solvent displaying an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior is in the sequence CN:DMF > ODT:DMF > DIO:DMF, the trends of which could be similarly applied to DMSO. Finally, the self-doping strategy with additive engineering should help fabricate a black γ-phase perovskite although the mixed phases of δ-CsPbI3, γ-CsPbI3, and Cs4PbI6 were observed under ambient conditions. However, the results may provide insight for the stability of metastable γ-phase CsPbI3 at room temperature.

Macroscopic charge segregation in driven polyelectrolyte solutions

Understanding the behavior of charged complex fluids is crucial for a plethora of important industrial, technological, and medical applications. Here, using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the properties of a polyelectrolyte solution with explicit counterions and implicit solvent that is driven by a steady electric field. By properly tuning the interplay between interparticle electrostatics and the applied electric field, we uncover two non-equilibrium continuous phase transitions as a function of the driving field. The first transition occurs from a homogeneous mixed phase to a macroscopic charge-segregated phase in which the polyelectrolyte solution self-organizes to form two lanes of like-charges, parallel to the applied field. We show that the fundamental underlying factor responsible for the emergence of this charge segregation in the presence of an electric field is the excluded volume interactions of the drifting polyelectrolyte chains. As the driving field is increased further, a re-entrant transition is observed from a charge-segregated phase to a homogeneous phase. The re-entrance is signaled by a decrease in the mobility of the monomers and counterions as the electric field is increased. Furthermore, with multivalent counterions, a counterintuitive regime of negative differential mobility is observed in which the charges move progressively more slowly as the driving field is increased. We show that all these features can be consistently explained using an intuitive trapping mechanism that operates between the oppositely moving charges, and present numerical evidence to support our claims. Parameter dependencies and phase diagrams are studied to better understand charge segregation in such driven polyelectrolyte solutions.

Protein-Based Flexible Conductive Aerogels for Piezoresistive Pressure Sensors

Gelatin is an excellent gelling agent and is widely employed for hydrogel formation. Because of the poor mechanical properties of gelatin when dry, gelatin-aerogels are comparatively rare. Herein we demonstrate that protein nanofibrils can be employed to improve the mechanical properties of gelatin aerogels, and the materials can moreover be functionalized with a an electrically conductive polyelectrolyte resulting in formation of an elastic electrically conductive aerogel that can be employed as a piezoresistive pressure sensor. The aerogel sensor shows a good linear relationship in a wide pressure range (1.8–300 kPa) with a sensitivity of 1.8 kPa^–1. This work presents a convenient way to produce electrically conductive elastic aerogels from low-cost protein precursors.

Self-doped conducting polymers in biomedical engineering: Synthesis, characterization, current applications and perspectives

Recent studies willingly agree that conducting polymers (CPs) are attractive materials for biomedical engineering purposes, mainly because of their unique physicochemical characteristics combining electrical conductivity and high biocompatibility. Nevertheless, the applicability of CPs is restricted by their limited stability under physiological conditions, associated with a decrease in electrical conductivity upon dedoping. Accordingly, modifying chemical structure of CPs to exhibit a self-doping effect seems to be an appealing approach aimed to enhance their functionality. The aim of this review is to provide a current state-of-the-art in the research concerning self-doped CPs, particularly those with potential biomedical applications. After presenting a library of available structure modifications, we describe their physicochemical characteristics, focusing on achievable conductivities, electrochemical, optical and mechanical behaviour, as well as biological properties. To highlight high applicability of self-doped CPs in biomedical engineering, we elaborate on biomedical areas benefiting most from using this type of conducting materials.

DNA Interaction with a Polyelectrolyte Monolayer at Solution-Air Interface

The formation of ordered 2D nanostructures of double stranded DNA molecules at various interfaces attracts more and more focus in medical and engineering research, but the underlying intermolecular interactions still require elucidation. Recently, it has been revealed that mixtures of DNA with a series of hydrophobic cationic polyelectrolytes including poly(N,N-diallyl-N-hexyl-N-methylammonium) chloride (PDAHMAC) form a network of ribbonlike or threadlike aggregates at the solution—air interface. In the present work, we adopt a novel approach to confine the same polyelectrolyte at the solution—air interface by spreading it on a subphase with elevated ionic strength. A suite of techniques–rheology, microscopy, ellipsometry, and spectroscopy–are applied to gain insight into main steps of the adsorption layer formation, which results in non-monotonic kinetic dependencies of various surface properties. A long induction period of the kinetic dependencies after DNA is exposed to the surface film results only if the initial surface pressure corresponds to a quasiplateau region of the compression isotherm of a PDAHMAC monolayer. Despite the different aggregation mechanisms, the micromorphology of the mixed PDAHMAC/DNA does not depend noticeably on the initial surface pressure. The results provide new perspective on nanostructure formation involving nucleic acids building blocks.

Nucleobases thin films deposited on nanostructured transparent conductive electrodes for optoelectronic applications

Environmentally-friendly bio-organic materials have become the centre of recent developments in organic electronics, while a suitable interfacial modification is a prerequisite for future applications. In the context of researches on low cost and biodegradable resource for optoelectronics applications, the influence of a 2D nanostructured transparent conductive electrode on the morphological, structural, optical and electrical properties of nucleobases (adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine and uracil) thin films obtained by thermal evaporation was analysed. The 2D array of nanostructures has been developed in a polymeric layer on glass substrate using a high throughput and low cost technique, UV-Nanoimprint Lithography. The indium tin oxide electrode was grown on both nanostructured and flat substrate and the properties of the heterostructures built on these two types of electrodes were analysed by comparison. We report that the organic-electrode interface modification by nano-patterning affects both the optical (transmission and emission) properties by multiple reflections on the walls of nanostructures and the electrical properties by the effect on the organic/electrode contact area and charge carrier pathway through electrodes. These results encourage the potential application of the nucleobases thin films deposited on nanostructured conductive electrode in green optoelectronic devices.
