2,2'-Bipyrrole-Based Porphyrinoids

Mono- and bis-Pd(ii) complexes of N-confused dithiahexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.0) with the absorption and aromaticity modulated by Pd(ii) coordination, macrocycle contraction and ancillary ligands

To further enrich the coordination chemistry of hexaphyrins and probe the underlying property-structural correlations, N-confused dithiahexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.0) (1) with 26 π-electron Hückel aromaticity was synthesized. Based on its unprecedented two unsymmetrical cavities, five palladium complexes 2, 3, 4-Ph, 4-Cl and 5 have been successfully synthesized under various coordinations. Thus, two mono-Pd(ii) complexes 2 and 3 with the Pd(ii) atom coordinated in the two different cavities were obtained by treating 1 with palladium reagents PdCl2, and (PPh3)2PdCl2 respectively. On this basis, bis-Pd(ii) complexes 4-Ph and 4-Cl were synthesized by treating 2 and 3 with (PPh3)2PdCl2 and PdCl2, respectively. As a result, both 4-Ph and 4-Cl contain two Pd(ii) atoms coordinated within the two cavities, with one of the Pd(ii) atoms further coordinated to a triphenylphosphine ligand in addition to an anionic ancillary ligand of Ph- and Cl-, respectively. Notably, a further contracted mono-Pd(ii) complex 5 was synthesized by treating 1 with Pd(PPh3)4 by eliminating one of the meso-carbon atoms together with the corresponding C6F5 moiety. These complexes present tunable 26 π aromaticity and NIR absorption up to 1060 nm. This work provides an effective approach for developing distinctive porphyrinoid Pd(ii) complexes from a single porphyrinoid, without resorting to tedious syntheses of a series of porphyrinoid ligands.

Synthesis of penta- and hexa(3,4-thienylene): size-dependent structural properties of cyclic oligothiophenes

Penta- and hexa(3,4-thienylene)s were synthesized as a potential precursor for thiophene-containing polyarenes, and the structures were determined via X-ray crystallography. The interconversion of thiophene rings is fast in penta(3,4-thienylene), and slow in hexa(3,4-thienylene) reflecting the activation energy for enantiomerization. Size-dependent bathochromic shifts were observed in UV-vis absorption spectra.

Phenanthrene-Incorporated Isoamethyrin: A Near-Planar Macrocycle That Display Enhanced Aromaticity via Protonation-Triggered Conformation Changes

Controlling the aromaticity in expanded porphyrins is a forefront research topic, and the strategy of using protonation-triggered conformational changes to fine-tune electronic properties and aromaticity has yet to be generalized in rigid and planar expanded porphyrins. Here, we synthesized phenanthrene-incorporated isoamethyrins that possess near-planar conformations and nonaromatic characters. However, when methanesulfonic acid (MSA) was added, geometric deformations occurred to minimize the unfavorable strain, resulting in macrocycles that were weakly aromatic as a whole.

4-Amino-5-benzoyl-1-benzyl-2-(4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-indol-2-yl)-1H-pyrrole-3-carbonitrile

The title compound, 4-amino-5-benzoyl-1-benzyl-2-(4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-indol-2-yl)- 1H-pyrrole-3-carbonitrile, was synthesized for the first time in a 40% yield by the reaction of N-benzyl-3-imino-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-3H-pyrrolo[1,2-a]indol-1-amine and 1-chloroacetophenone in a K2CO3/MeCN system (reflux, 6 h). The product was characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis.

Highly Fluorescent Bipyrrole-Based Tetra-BF2 Flag-Hinge Chromophores: Achieving Multicolor and Circularly Polarized Luminescence

This study reports the facile syntheses of tetra-boron difluoride (tetra-BF₂ ) complexes, flag-hinge-like molecules that exhibit intense green-to-orange luminescence in solution and yellow-to-red emission in the solid states. Single-crystal structure analysis and density functional theory calculations suggested a bent structure of this series of compounds. The complexes also exhibited excellent optical properties, with quantum yields reaching 100 % and a large Stokes shift. These properties were attributed to the altered bending angle of the molecule in the S₁ excited state. As the rotational motion was suppressed around the 2,2'-bipyrrole axis, atropisomers with axial chirality were formed, which are optically resolvable into (R) and (S)-enantiomers through a chiral column. The atropisomers thus function as circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials, in which the color (green, green-yellow, and yellow) can be varied by controlling the aggregation state. This rational design of multi-BF₂ complexes can potentially realize novel photofunctional materials.

Low-Valent Zirconocene-Mediated Synthesis of Porphyrin(2.1.2.1)s and Its Extension to Synthesis of a Porphyrin(2.1.2.1) Nanobarrel

Rosenthal's-reagent-mediated intramolecular cyclometallation of α,α-dialkynyldipyrrin nickel(II) complex and subsequent acid treatment afforded a 1,3-butadiene-embedded porphyrin(2.1.2.1), 6, which served as a reactive diene towards dienophiles such as dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) and benzyne to give corresponding Diels-Alder adducts. Diels-Alder reaction of 6 and benzdiyne gave adducts 14, 15 a, and 15 b along with a trace amount of porphyrin(2.1.2.1) barrel 13. Stepwise routes using 14 or 15 a/15 b as a substrate allowed for the synthesis of 13 as a single stereoisomer. The nanobarrel structure for 13 was revealed by X-ray diffraction, where its cavity held two chloroform molecules via C-H⋅⋅⋅π interaction. DFT calculations revealed that the electrostatic attraction was dominant with binding energy of 32.8 kcal mol^-1 .

syn and anti Metal Complexes of 24π Antiaromatic Bis(dicarbonylrhodium(I))dithiaamethyrin

From the reaction of sterically less hindered tetrapropyl[24]dithiaamethyrin(1.0.0.1.0.0) 5, with [Rh(CO)2Cl]2, a unique anti form of the bis(dicarbonylrhodium(I)) complex (6-anti), where two rhodium ions are on the opposite faces of the macrocyclic ligand, was isolated for the first time in 12% yield along with the corresponding syn isomer (6-syn, 61% yield). These structures were characterized in detail by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis. Compound 6-syn exhibited a bowl-shaped structure with the two rhodium atoms separated by a distance of ~4.5 Å. In contrast, 6-anti contained a wave-shaped macrocycle with a distance of ~5.3 Å between the two rhodium atoms. Furthermore, the 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectra and density functional theory calculation results revealed that 6-anti had a stronger paratropic ring current and a more planar structure than 6-syn. The isolation of both 6-anti and 6-syn enabled the structure-property relationship to be discussed in detail.

Monothia [22]pentaphyrin(2.0.1.1.0): a core-modified isomer of sapphyrin

A novel 22π-aromatic sapphyrin isomer endowed with an acene moiety was designed and realised for the first time as a core-modified monothia analogue. This macrocycle exhibited absorption and emission in the near-infrared region. It was diprotonated under strongly acidic conditions and bound to anions like sapphyrin. It showed unusual coordination chemistry, acting as a neutral ligand and undergoing large out-of-plane deformation to bind Pd(II) ions.

1,4-Phenylene-Incorporated Decaphyrin(1.0.1.0.0.1.0.1.0.0): Synthesis, Structure, and Topological Chirality

Expanded porphyrins represent emerging structures in realizing topological chirality; however, their inherent flexibility has hampered the effective chiral resolution. Herein, we rationally designed a decaphyrin 9, which could be separated into its enantiomers in the free-base form. The enantiomers showed noteworthy chiroptical properties, e.g., the intense circular dichroism response in the visible spectrum, and high absorption dissymmetry factors (g_abs) of 0.036 at 618 nm. Theoretical analyses further explained the origin of the high g_abs value.

Synthesis of C8-Aminated Pyrrolo-Phenanthridines or -Indoles via Series C(sp2 or sp3)-H Activation and Fluorescence Study

This report developed a method for the synthesis of C8-aminated pyrrolo-phenanthridines or -indoles by series ortho C(sp²)-H amination/ipso C(sp²)-H or C(sp³)-H arylation. N-benzoyloxyamines, as electrophilic amination reagents, did not undergo an electrophilic substitution reaction with the pyrrole side, but they did undergo a site-selective C-H amination reaction with the benzene side via Pd/NBE catalysis. The C8-aminated pyrrolo-phenanthridines have strong fluorescence in solution and solid state. X-ray single crystal diffraction shows that the steric hindrance of amino and ortho benzene ring may inhibit aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ).

Tailor-made aromatic porphyrinoids with NIR absorption

The highlight of this article is the recent progress in the state-of-the-art synthetic design and isolation of artificial porphyrinoids by swapping pyrrole component(s) with diverse functionalized pyrrolic(heterocyclic)/carbacycle building block(s) to compare the impact on the electronic absorption spectra and aromaticity of the incorporated isomeric/expanded porphyrinoids. Attention has been directed towards five distinct criteria of utilizing functionalized pyrrolic(heterocyclic)/aromatic hydrocarbons as synthons for NIR absorbing aromatic isomeric (N-confusion)/expanded porphyrinoids (with five/six heterocycles): (i) fused or annelated pyrrole (heterocycle), (ii) functionalized bi-pyrrole/bi-thiophene/bi-furan building blocks, (iii) azulene based carbacycle building block, (iv) vinylogous aromatic carbacycle/heterocycle(s) building block and (v) N-confused pyrrole ring(s), and N-confused fused pyrrole ring(s) leading to π-extension. These hybrid porphyrinoids are ideal candidates for basic research into macrocyclic aromaticity and for many potential applications owing to NIR absorption.

Controlled assembly of a bicyclic porphyrinoid and its 3-dimensional boron difluoride arrays

A fully conjugated cryptand-like bicyclic porphyrinoid ligand 4, incorporating three carbazole linkages and four dipyrrin moieties, was prepared via the acid-catalysed condensation of an extended 2,2′-bipyrrole analogue containing a central carbazole moiety and 3,4-diethyl-2,5-diformylpyrrole in 79% isolated yield. This new cryptand-like system acts as an effective ligand and allows for complexation of BF₂ (boron difluoride) subunits. Three BODIPY arrays, containing two, three, and four BF₂ subunits, namely 4·2BF₂, 4·3BF₂ and 4·4BF₂, could thus be isolated from the reaction of 4 with BF₃·Et₂O in the presence of triethylamine at 110 °C, albeit in relatively low yield. As prepared, bicycle 4 is characterized by a rigid C₂ symmetric structure as inferred from VT NMR spectroscopic analyses. In contrast, the three BODIPY-like arrays produced as the result of BF₂ complexation are conformationally flexible and unsymmetric in nature as deduced from similar analyses. All four products, namely 4, 4·2BF₂, 4·3BF₂ and 4·4BF₂, were characterized by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Tetramer 4·4BF₂ gives rise to a higher extinction coefficient (by 2.5 times) relative to the bis- and tris-BODIPY arrays 4·2BF₂ and 4·3BF₂. This was taken as evidence for stronger excitonic coupling in the case of 4·4BF₂. All three BODIPY-like arrays proved nearly non-fluorescent, as expected given their conformationally mobile nature. The efficiency of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was also determined for the new BODIPY arrays of this study.

A cryptand-like bicyclic porphyrinoid was obtained in preference over the monocyclic porphyrinoid by controlling the reaction stoichiometry and condensation conditions. The cryptand-like species supports formation of multiple 3D BODIPY-like arrays.

PorphyStruct: A Digital Tool for the Quantitative Assignment of Non-Planar Distortion Modes in Four-Membered Porphyrinoids

PorphyStruct, a new digital tool for the analysis of non‐planar distortion modes of different porphyrinoids, and its application to corrole structures is reported. The program makes use of the normal‐coordinate structure decomposition technique (NSD) and employs sets of normal modes equivalent to those established for porphyrins in order to describe the out‐of‐plane dislocation pattern of perimeter atoms from corroles, norcorroles, porphycenes and other porphyrinoids quantitatively and in analogy to the established terminology. A comparative study of 17 porphyrin structures shows very similar results to the original NSD analysis and no systematic error. Application to corroles is successful and reveals the necessity to implement an extended basis of normal modes for a large share of experimental structures. The results frequently show the concomitant occurence of several modes but remain interpretable. For group XI metal corroles the phenomenon of supersaddling was unravelled, allowing for more in‐depths discussions of structure‐function correlations.

RhIII -Catalyzed C6-Selective Oxidative C-H/C-H Crosscoupling of 2-Pyridones with Thiophenes

A rhodium(III)-catalyzed C6-selective dehydrogenative cross-coupling of 2-pyridones with thiophenes was developed for the synthesis of 6-thiophenyl pyridin-2(1H)-one derivatives. In this reaction, the excellent site selectivity was controlled by the 2-pyridyl directing group on the nitrogen of the pyridone ring. Control experiments indicated that the N-pyridyl was essential for the transformation. To the best of our knowledge, this procedure is the first successful example of the direct C6 heteroarylation of 2-pyridones with electron-rich thiophene derivatives. 4-Pyridone was also used as substrate to generate the corresponding C2 heteroarylated product. Moreover, this pyridyl directing group was readily removable to generate the biheteroaryl structures with a free N-H group.

Photo-on-Demand Synthesis of Vilsmeier Reagents with Chloroform and Their Applications to One-Pot Organic Syntheses

The Vilsmeier reagent (VR), first reported a century ago, is a versatile reagent in a variety of organic reactions. It is used extensively in formylation reactions. However, the synthesis of VR generally requires highly toxic and corrosive reagents such as POCl₃, SOCl₂, or COCl₂. In this study, we found that VR is readily obtained from a CHCl₃ solution containing N,N-dimethylformamide or N,N-dimethylacetamide upon photo-irradiation under O₂ bubbling. The corresponding Vilsmeier reagents were obtained in high yields with the generation of gaseous HCl and CO₂ as byproducts to allow their isolations as crystalline solid products amenable to analysis by X-ray crystallography. With the advantage of using CHCl₃, which bifunctionally serves as a reactant and a solvent, this photo-on-demand VR synthesis is available for one-pot syntheses of aldehydes, acid chlorides, formates, ketones, esters, and amides.

Chiral Interlocked Corrole Dimers Directly Linked at Inner Carbon Atoms of Confused Pyrrole Rings

A facile synthetic strategy towards conformationally stable chiral chromophores based on dimeric porphyrinoids has been established. A peculiar class of face-to-face intramolecularly interlocked corrole dimers were formed by the oxidative C-C coupling linked at the inner carbon sites upon simple treatment of copper(II) ions. Their intrinsic electronic structures were modulated by the peripheral corrole ring annulations, which lead to distinct optical properties and redox profiles. The stereogenic carbon centers implemented in the confused corrole skeleton provided a rationale for designing novel chiral materials.

Post Synthetic Modification of Planar Antiaromatic Hexaphyrin (1.0.1.0.1.0) by Regio-Selective, Sequential SNAr

In spite of unique structural, spectroscopic and redox properties, the synthetic variants of the planar, antiaromatic hexaphyrin (1.0.1.0.1.0) derivatives 2, has been limited due to the low yields and difficulty in access to the starting material. A chemical modification of the meso-substituents could be good alternative overcoming the synthetic barrier. Herein, we report a regio-selective nucleophilic aromatic substitution (S_NAr) of meso-pentafluorophenyl group in rosarrin 2 with catechol. The reaction afforded benzodioxane fused rosarrin 3 as single product with high yield. The intrinsic antiaromatic character of the starting rosarrin 2 retained throughout the reactions. Clean, two electron reduction was achieved by treatment of 3 with SnCl₂•2H₂O affording 26π-electron aromatic rosarrin 4. The synthesized compounds exhibited noticeable changes in photophysical and redox properties compared with starting rosarrin 2.

Conformation-Changeable π-Electronic Systems with Metastable Bent-Core Conformations and Liquid-Crystalline-State Electric-Field-Responsive Properties

This study focused on the use of nonconventional bent-core π-electronic systems, 2,2'-bipyrroles substituted with modified benzoyl units, as building units of stimuli-responsive assemblies. Electric-field-responsive mesophase behaviors were observed in homochiral synclinic ferroelectric smectic C structures comprising the syn conformations. Electric-field application induced changes in the polarized optical microscopy textures with dynamic behaviors derived from the conversion from twisted to untwisted states.

Developing strong NIR absorption materials through linear planar π-conjugated cyclopalladated complex dimers

Strong near-infrared absorption complexes with linear planar π-conjugated structure were presented.

Benzene- and pyridine-incorporated octaphyrins with different coordination modes toward two PdII centers

Expanded porphyrins have received considerable attention due to their unique optical, electrochemical and coordination properties. Here, we report benzene- and pyridine-incorporated octaphyrins(1.1.0.0.1.1.0.0), which are synthesized through Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of α,α'-diboryltripyrrane with m-dibromobenzene and 2,6-dibromopyridine, respectively, and subsequent oxidation with 2,3-dicyano-5,6-dichlorobenzoquinone. Both octaphyrins are nonaromatic and take on dumbbell structures. Upon treatment with Pd(OOCCH₃)₂, the benzene-incorporated one gives a C_i symmetric NNNC coordinated bis-Pd^II complex but the pyridine incorporated one gives C_i and C_s symmetric NNNC coordinated bis-Pd^II complexes along with an NNNN coordinated bis-Pd^II complex bearing a transannular C-C bond between the pyrrole α-positions. In addition, these two pyridine-containing NNNC Pd^II complexes undergo trifluoroacetic acid-induced clean interconversion.

Porphyrinoids with Vinylene Bridges

Porphyrinoids containing vinylene bridges, such as triphyrin(2.1.1), porphycene, porphyrin(2.1.2.1), and hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1), are a relatively new family of porphyrinoids. Vinylene bridges give porphyrinoids a lower symmetry and a flexibility of the framework and they permit cis/trans-isomerization reactions; these factors confer unique properties to these substances, such as coordination to metal ions and aromaticity switching. In this account, the synthesis, crystal structures, and properties of new porphyrinoids containing vinylene bridges are summarized.

Iterative Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-coupling/Bromo-desilylation Reaction Sequences for the Assembly of Chemically Well-defined, Acyclic Oligopyrrole/Benzenoid Hybrids Embodying Mixed Modes of Connectivity

Syntheses of a range of chemically well-defined oligopyrrole/benzenoid hybrids are described using tandem Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling/bromo-desilyation reaction sequences for linking borylated pyrroles, halogenated pyrroles and/or dibromobenzenes to one another. By such means, including iterative variants, a range of all α-linked, all β-linked oligopyrroles as well as certain combinations thereof have been assembled, some of them for the first time. The conductivities of iodine-treated thin films formed from certain such systems have been determined.

Expanded Carbaporphyrinoids

This Review outlines the progress in the field of synthetic expanded carbaporphyrinoids. The evolution of this topic is demonstrated with expanded porphyrin-inspired systems with a variety of incorporated entities that introduce one or more carbon atoms into the cavity. The discussion starts with platyrins-the macrocycles that were identified as parent molecules of not only the expanded carbaporphyrinoids, but the carbaporphyrinoid class in general. After historic considerations, the plethora of expanded porphyrin-like macrocycles containing N-confused or neo-confused pyrrole motifs and different carbocyclic subunits are presented. Special emphasis is given to applications of expanded carbaporphyrinoids in different areas, including organometallic chemistry, switching systems, or aromaticity, concluding with the demonstration of a covalent cage based on an expanded carbaporphyrinoid.

Simultaneous Implementation of N-Heterocycle-Fused Bridge and Modified Pyrrole Unit on Ni(II) Porphyrin Dimers

The oxidation of Ni^II-porphyrin dimer 10 with PbO₂ or MnO₂ resulted in the simultaneous implementation of an N-heterocycle-fused bridge and a modified pyrrole to give three unprecedented porphyrin dimers 11, 12, and 13. The reduction of 12 smoothly afforded 14. The structures of these dimers were all unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. These dimers show significantly red-shifted absorption bands and perturbed electrochemical properties with a decreasing HOMO-LUMO gap in the order of 14 > 13 > 11 > 12.

A porphycene-gentamicin conjugate for enhanced photodynamic inactivation of bacteria

A novel photoantimicrobial agent, namely 2-aminothiazolo[4,5-c]-2,7,12,17-tetrakis(methoxyethyl)porphycene (ATAZTMPo-gentamicin) conjugate, has been prepared by a click reaction between the red-light absorbing 9-isothiocyanate-2,7,12,17-tetrakis(methoxyethyl)porphycene (9-ITMPo) and the antibiotic gentamicin. The conjugate exhibits submicromolar activity in vitro against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, respectively) upon exposure to red light and is devoid of any cytotoxicity in the dark. The conjugate outperforms the two components delivered separately, which may be used to enhance the therapeutic index of gentamicin, broaden the spectrum of pathogens against which it is effective and reduce its side effects. Additionally, we report a novel straightforward synthesis of 2,7,12,17-tetrakis(methoxyethyl) porphycene (TMPo) that decreases the number of steps from nine to six.

Tripyrrin-armed isosmaragdyrins: synthesis, heterodinuclear coordination, and protonation-triggered helical inversion

Oxidative ring closure of linear oligopyrroles is one of the synthetic approaches to novel porphyrinoids with dinuclear coordination sites and helical chirality. The spatial arrangement of the pyrrolic groups of octapyrrole (P8) affected the position of the intramolecular oxidative coupling of the pyrrolic units; tripyrrin-armed isosmaragdyrin analogue (1) containing a β,β-linked bipyrrole moiety was synthesized regioselectively in a high yield by using FeCl₃. Ni^II-coordination at the armed tripyrrin site of 1 allowed the formation of diastereomeric helical twisted complexes (2A and 2B) and succeeding Cu^II-coordination at the macrocyclic core afforded heterodinuclear Ni^II/Cu^II-complexes (3A and 3B). Each of them comprised a pair of separable enantiomers, exhibiting P- and M-helices, respectively. Notably, diastereomeric interconversion from 2A to 2B was quantitatively achieved as a consequence of helical transformation under acidic conditions.

A flexible expanded heterocorrole: Tellura[22]porphyrin(6.1.1.0)

An expanded heterocorrole, meso-tetraaryl-tellura[22]porphyrin(6.1.1.0), containing a bipyrrole moiety and a six-carbon long link, has been synthesized. The reaction path proceeds through a controlled acid-promoted extrusion of one tellurium atom from meso-aryl-26,28-ditellurasapphyrin, leading to a structure where one tellurophene ring of the substrate is replaced by a bridging acyclic four-carbon unit. This aromatic porphyrin-annulene hybrid is conformationally flexible in solution, on account of the C4 unit adopting two different configurations: trans–cis–trans or all-trans. Studies of the dynamic behavior of tellura[22]porphyrin(6.1.1.0) in solution were performed by means of 1H and 125Te NMR spectroscopy. The X-ray structure of the all-trans form with trapezoid macrocyclic skeleton is also presented.

1,2,3-Triazolium macrocycles in supramolecular chemistry

In this short review, we describe different pathways for synthesizing 1,2,3-triazolium macrocycles and focus on their application in different areas of supramolecular chemistry. The synthesis is mostly relying on the well-known "click reaction" (CuAAC) leading to 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles that then can be quaternized. Applications of triazolium macrocycles thus prepared include receptors for molecular recognition of anionic species, pH sensors, mechanically interlocked molecules, molecular machines, and molecular reactors.

Synthesis of α,α’-linked penta- and septaheterocycles by tandem Suzuki coupling

The controlled synthesis of oligoaromatics can provide materials of wide utility. Here, we describe the preparation of higher order oligoheterocycles via a tandem Suzuki cross-coupling protocol. This method has allowed for the iterative construction of fluorescent [Formula: see text],[Formula: see text]-linked penta- and septaheterocyclic systems with modification of the terminal moiety allowing for fine-tuning of the emission features.

Trapping of Stable [4n+1] π-Electron Species from Peripherally Substituted, Conformationally Rigid, Antiaromatic Hexaphyrins

Peripherally substituted antiaromatic naphthorosarins have been synthesized for the first time. The synthesis was accomplished by acid-catalyzed condensation of naphthobipyrrole building blocks with aromatic aldehydes. The naphthobipyrrole building blocks were synthesized by simple oxidative coupling of the corresponding pyrrole substituted aromatics. Solid-state structural analyses of the synthesized naphthorosarins revealed that the presence of meso-2,6-dichlorophenyl- and 5,6-difluoro-substitution substantially alter the geometry and properties of the naphthorosarins. The substituents affect the redox potentials as well and, in turn, the proton-coupled electron-transfer processes leading to the formation of one- and two-electron reduced forms of the corresponding naphthorosarins. One particular naphthorosarin that bears both peripheral fluorine and meso-2,6-dichlorophenyl substituents forms a stable 25 π-electron species upon treating with TFA that was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The current study underscores how structural modifications can be used to fine-tune the electronic features of naphthorosarins, including stabilization of odd electron species.

Planar Antiaromatic Core-Modified 24π Hexaphyrin(1.0.1.0.1.0) and 32π Octaphyrin(1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0) Bearing Alternate Hybrid Diheterole Units

The Lewis acid catalyzed self-condensation of hybrid diheterole (furan-pyrrole and thiophene-pyrrole) precursors has afforded novel Hückel antiaromatic 24π hexaphyrin(1.0.1.0.1.0) and 32π octaphyrin(1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0) structures without β-annulated bridges. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the hybrid porphyrinoids (S₃ N₃ -ox and O₄ N₄ -ox) revealed a nearly planar conformation and the ¹ H NMR spectra suggest the presence of paratropic ring currents. These antiaromatic macrocycles show characteristic optical features and underwent reversible two-electron reduction to Hückel aromatic 26π- and 34π-electron species, respectively, as is evident from the results of spectroscopic and theoretical studies (nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) and anisotropy of the current-induced density (ACID) calculations). The incorporation of hybrid diheteroles alternately into expanded porphyrin skeletons provides a novel approach to the fine-tuning of the electronic structures of planar antiaromatic macrocycles.

Inversion Triggered by Protonation-A Rubyrin with Embedded α,β'-Pyridine Moieties

Incorporation of α,β'-pyridine into a [26]hexaphyrin(1.1.0.1.1.0) frame resulted in formation of 29,33-diaza-A,D-di-p-benzi[26]hexaphyrin (A,D-di-p-pyrirubyrin), which acquires a strictly planar conformation with two nitrogen pyridine atoms directed to the center of the macrocyclic core. The mode of α,β'-pyridine incorporation results in efficient 26-electron π-conjugation, as shown by the clear spectroscopic and structural aromatic features. The formation of the trication and tetracation through protonation is accompanied by a conformational flip of one or two pyridinium moieties to result in N-confused or doubly N-confused conformers of the original macrocyclic frame.

Synthesis of a doubly SO2-fused phlorin: Tuning the structure and properties by the SO2 groups

A doubly SO2-fused phlorin 4 has been synthesized by the [2 + 2] condensation of dipyrromethanecarbinol 2 and SO2-fused dipyrromenthane 3 in the presence of TFA, followed by DDQ oxidation. The SO2-fused phlorin 4 has been characterized by absorption, fluorescence, mass and NMR spectra, as well as X-ray analysis. Compared to the [Formula: see text]-unsubstituted phlorin 5, the SO2-fused phlorin 4 exhibits a red-shifted absorption spectrum (around 12 nm), a more distorted molecular conformation, as well as nice photostability even with an electron-donating meso-3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl group. The titration of 4 and 5 with TBAF has been monitored by absorption spectroscopy. The deprotonated phlorin 4 shows a peak at 870 nm which is red shifted by 26 nm compared to that of deprotonated 5.

Gram-Scale Synthesis of a Bench-Stable 5,5″-Unsubstituted Terpyrrole

The controlled preparation of higher order oligopyrrolic species holds broad utility across the chemical and material sciences. Here, we describe the gram-scale synthesis of a bench-stable 5,5″-unsubstituted terpyrrole in excellent yield via a tandem Suzuki cross-coupling with in situ deprotection. The solution and solid-state stability as well as UV-vis, fluorescence, and single crystal X-ray diffraction structure are also detailed.

Cu-Catalyzed Tandem Aerobic Oxidative Cyclization for the Synthesis of 3,3'-Bipyrroles from the Homopropargylic Amines

A Cu-catalyzed method for the synthesis of 3,3'-bipyrroles from homopropargylic amines through tandem aerobic oxidative cyclization involving the formation of C-C bond has been developed. The features of this reaction are a small number of Cu catalysis and simple starting substrates. Moreover, this procedure exhibits good functional group tolerance and a series of 3,3'-bipyrroles derivatives are obtained in moderate to good yields.
