Abstract
The impact of global warming on plant abundance has been widely discussed, but it remains unclear how warming affects plant physiological traits, and how these traits contribute to the abundance of aquatic plants. We explored the adjustments in physiological traits of two common aquatic plant species (Potamogeton crispus L. and Elodea canadensis Michx.) and their links to plant abundance in three temperature treatments by determining twelve physiological traits and plant abundance over an 11-month period in outdoor mesocosms. This mesocosms facility has been running uninteruptedly for 16 years, rendering the plants a unique opportunity to adapt to the warming differences. We found that 1) warming reduced the starch storage in winter for P. crispus and in summer for E. canadensis while increased the nitrogenous substances (e.g., TN, FAA, and proline) in winter for P. crispus. 2) For E. canadensis, TC, starch, SC, and sucrose contents were higher in summer than in winter regardless of warming, while TC, SC, and sucrose contents were lower in summer for P. crispus. 3) Warming decreased the association strength between physiological traits and plant abundance for P. crispus but enhanced it for E. canadensis. 4) E. canadensis showed increased interaction strength among physiological traits under warming, indicating increased metabolic exertion in the response to warming, which contributed to the reduction in abundance. Trait interaction strength of P. crispus was reduced under warming, but with less impact on plant abundance compared with E. canadensis. Our study emphasizes that warming alters the network of plant physiological traits and their contribution to abundance and that different strengths of susceptibility to warming of the various plant species may alter the composition of plant communities in freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract
Sweating regulates the body temperature in extreme environments or during exercise. Here, we investigate the evaporative heat transfer of a sweat droplet at the microscale to unveil how the evaporation complexity of a sweat droplet would affect the body's ability to cool under specific environmental conditions. Our findings reveal that, depending on the relative humidity and temperature levels, sweat droplets experience imperfect evaporation dynamics, whereas water droplets evaporate perfectly at equivalent ambient conditions. At low humidity, the sweat droplet fully evaporates and leaves a solid deposit, while at high humidity, the droplet never reaches a solid deposit and maintains a liquid phase residue for both low and high temperatures. This unprecedented evaporation mechanism of a sweat droplet is attributed to the intricate physicochemical properties of sweat as a biofluid. We suppose that the sweat residue deposited on the surface by evaporation is continuously absorbing the surrounding moisture. This route leads to reduced evaporative heat transfer, increased heat index, and potential impairment of the body's thermoregulation capacity. The insights into the evaporative heat transfer dynamics at the microscale would help us to improve the knowledge of the body's natural cooling mechanism with practical applications in healthcare, materials science, and sports science.

Abstract
Increased algal blooms and loss of aquatic vegetation are critical environmental issues associated with shallow lakes worldwide. The increase in organic matter (OM) in both macrophyte-dominated areas (MDAs) and algae-dominated areas (ADAs) has exacerbated these problems. Most OM in water is concentrated as suspended particulate matter (SPM), which eventually migrates to the sediment. However, the detailed origins and fates of OM in water-SPM-sediment systems with coexisting MDAs and ADAs remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, we conducted monthly field investigations in Lake Taihu, focusing on OM-migration patterns in an MDA and an ADA. The C/N mass ratios, δ13C contents, and OM compositions of the water, SPM, and sediment were analyzed. Our findings revealed that autochthonous sources of OM prevailed in water, whereas terrestrial sources prevailed in SPM and sediment. Rapid decomposition processes of microbial- and algae-derived dissolved OM were discovered along the water-SPM-sediment pathways in both areas. A trend towards a shift from macrophytes to algae in the MDA was also discovered. Overall, the entire lake underwent a burial process of OM in both types of areas, with mineralization mostly occurring during the algal-bloom seasons and more strongly in the ADA. Furthermore, we deduced that a decrease in the OM-burial rate, but an increase in the mineralization rate, might occur after a complete shift from a macrophyte- to an algae-dominated status. Such a shift might change the carbon-cycle process in eutrophic shallow lakes and should be given more attention in future research.

Abstract
Microplastic pollution and heat waves, as damaging aspects of human activities, have been found to affect crop production and nitrogen (N) cycling in agroecosystems. However, the impacts of the combination of heat waves and microplastics on crop production and quality have not been analyzed. We found that heat waves or microplastics alone had slight effects on rice physiological parameters and soil microbial communities. However, under heat wave conditions, the typical low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polylactic acid (PLA) microplastics decreased the rice yields by 32.1% and 32.9%, decreased the grain protein level by 4.5% and 2.8%, and decreased the lysine level by 91.1% and 63.6%, respectively. In the presence of heat waves, microplastics increased the allocation and assimilation of N in roots and stems but decreased those in leaves, which resulted in a reduction in photosynthesis. In soil, the concurrence of microplastics and heat waves induced the leaching of microplastics, which resulted in decreased microbial N functionality and disturbed N metabolism. In summary, heat waves amplified the disturbance induced by microplastics on the agroecosystem N cycle and therefore exacerbated the decreases in rice yield and nutrients induced by microplastics, which indicates that the environmental and food risks of microplastics deserve to be reconsidered.

Abstract
Climate impacts of elevated temperatures and more severe and frequent weather extremes like heatwaves are globally becoming discernible on nature. While a mechanistic understanding is pivotal for ecosystem management, stressors like pesticides may interact with warming, leading to unpredictable effects on freshwater ecosystems. These multiple stressor studies are scarce and experimental designs often lack environmental realism. To investigate the multiple stressor effects, we conducted a microcosm experiment for 48 days comprising benthic macroinvertebrates, zooplankton, phytoplankton, macrophytes, and microbes. The fungicide carbendazim (100 μg/L) was investigated combined with temperature scenarios representing elevated temperatures (+4 °C) or heatwaves (+0 to +8 °C), both applied with similar energy input on a daily fluctuating ambient temperature (18 °C ± 1.5 °C), which served as control. Measurements showed the highest carbendazim dissipation in water under heatwaves followed by elevated and ambient temperatures. Average carbendazim concentrations were about 50% in water and 16% in sediment of the nominal concentration. In both heated cosms, zooplankton community dynamics revealed an unexpected shift from Rotifera to Cladocera and Copepoda nauplii, indicating variations in their thermal sensitivity, tolerance and resilience. Notably, warming and heatwaves shaped community responses similarly, suggesting heat intensity rather than distribution patterns determined the community structure. Heatwaves led to significant early and longer-lasting adverse effects that were exacerbated over time with Cladocera and Copepoda being most sensitive likely due to significant carbendazim interactions. Finally, a structural equation model demonstrated significant relationships between zooplankton and macrophytes and significantly negative carbendazim effects on zooplankton, whereas positive on macroinvertebrate abundances. The relationship between macroinvertebrate feeding and abundance was masked by significantly temperature-affected microbial leaf litter decomposition. Despite the thermal tolerance of zooplankton communities, our study highlights an increased pesticide threat under temperature extremes. More intense heatwaves are thus likely to cause significant alterations in community assemblages which will adversely affect ecosystem's processes and functions.

Abstract
The balance of stoichiometric traits of organisms is crucial for nutrient cycling and energy flow in ecosystems. However, the impacts of different drivers on stoichiometric (carbon, C; nitrogen, N; and phosphorus, P) variations of organisms have not been well addressed. In order to understand how stoichiometric traits vary across trophic levels under different environmental stressors, we performed a mesocosm experiment to explore the impacts of warming (including +3 °C consistent warming above ambient and heat waves ranging from 0 to 6 °C), eutrophication, herbicide and their interactions on stoichiometric traits of organisms at different trophic levels, which was quantified by stable nitrogen isotopes. Results showed that herbicide treatment had no significant impacts on all stochiometric traits, while warming and eutrophication significantly affected the stoichiometric traits of organisms at lower trophic levels. Eutrophication increased nutrient contents and decreased C: nutrient ratios in primary producers, while the response of N:P ratios depended on the taxonomic group. The contribution of temperature treatments to stoichiometric variation was less than that of eutrophication. Heat waves counteracted the impacts of eutrophication, which was different from the effects of continuous warming, indicating that eutrophication impacts on organism stoichiometric traits depended on climate scenarios. Compared to environmental drivers, taxonomic group was the dominant driver that determined the variations of stoichiometric traits. Furthermore, the stoichiometric stability of organisms was strongly positively correlated with their trophic levels. Our results demonstrate that warming and eutrophication might substantially alter the stoichiometric traits of lower trophic levels, thus impairing the nutrient transfer to higher trophic level, which might further change the structure of food webs and functions of the ecosystems.

Abstract
Multi-species submerged plants grow with succession patterns in the same habit and play an important role in the aquatic ecosystems. The decomposition of submerged plants in aquatic environments was a disturbance that affected the water quality and microbial community structures. However, the responses of the microbial community function in surface water to the disturbance remain poorly understood. In this study, the effects of submerged macrophyte Potamogeton crispus L decomposition on the water quality and microbial carbon metabolism functions (MCMF) in the overlying water were investigated in the presence/absence of Vallisneria natans. The result showed that the decomposition rapidly released a large amount of organic matter and nutrients into the overlying water. The presence of Vallisneria natans promoted the removal of dissolved organic carbon and fluorescent component C3, resulting in lower values of the percentage content of C3 (C3%). Under various decomposition processes, the MCMF changed over time and significantly negatively correlated with C3%. The functional diversity of MCMF significantly correlated with the fluorescence organic matters, such as the richness and Simpson index correlated with the amount of C1, C1+C2+C3, and C3%. But UV-visible absorption indexes and nutrients in the overlying water had no relationship with the MCMF, except for the total nitrogen correlated with the richness. These results suggested that under various decomposition conditions, the fluorescent dissolved organic matter could be used as an indicator for quick prediction of MCMF in surface water.
