Abstract
Tire plastic and road-wear particles (TPR-WP) are a current research priority as one of the main environmental sources of microplastics. We selected a unique land use type - desert restoration area, collected soil and dust samples from the Yujing Expressway and its service areas, and analyzed TPR-WP abundance, type, size and morphology by laser direct infrared (LDIR). The abundance of TPR-WP in expressway dust (14,446.87 ± 10,234.24 n/kg) was higher than that in soil (7500 ± 3253.64 n/kg). Random forest model showed that the source of TPR-WP was highly correlated with economic factors and natural climate. Overall, the proportion of small and medium-sized TPR-WP in dust was higher than soil, more than half of the TPR-WP in dust were in 20 - 50 µm range. The proportion of small particle size TPR-WP increased with the rise of elevation. The pollution load index suggested that the survey region was generally at level I risk zone, while the ecological risk index indicated that the pollution level of expressway was III and IV, and the service area was IV. In general, the study was of great significance for clarifying the distribution and risk of TPR-WP in soil and dust of expressways and service areas.

Abstract
The fate of organic compounds released from tire wear particle (TWP) in the aquatic environment is still poorly understood. This is especially true near sources where biotic and abiotic transformation and leaching from TWP are simultaneous and competing processes. To address this knowledge-gap an experiment was performed, allowing for biodegradation (a) during the leaching from a suspension of cryo-milled tire tread (CMTT) and (b) subsequent to leaching. Besides measuring the Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) content, 19 tire-related chemicals were quantified, and non-target screening was performed by LC-HRMS. The non-inoculated control experiment exhibited a DOC of up to 4 mg g-1, with up to 700 µg g-1 of 1,3-diphenylguanidine (DPG) as the most prominent compound, followed by three benzothiazoles (2-mercaptobenzothiazole (2-MBT), 2-hydroxybenzothiazole (2-OHBT) and benzothiazole-2-sulfonic acid (BTSA); 50 µg g-1 each) and 4-hydroxydiphenylamine (4-HDPA) (50 µg g-1). Biodegradation reduced the DOC by 88 % and the concentration of most organic compounds by more than 85 %. At the end of the experiment hexamethoxymethylmelamine (HMMM) was the most prominent single compounds (18 µg g-1). Non-target screening showed a more complex picture. Another 25 transformation products (TPs) of N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6-PPD) and 44 TPs and derivatives related to DPG were detected in solution, of which 11 and 28 were still present after or formed by biodegradation, respectively. Of these 39 TPs and derivatives, 31 could be detected in road runoff samples. This study provides a more comprehensive picture of the leachables of tire particles that are of environmental relevance. It also outlines that derivatives of tire additives formed during tire production and use may deserve more attention as leachables. The large extent of biodegradation of tire leachables suggests that settling ponds may be a useful treatment option for road runoff.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWP) are a prevalent form of microplastics (MPs) extensively distributed in the environment, raising concerns about their environmental behaviors and risks. However, knowledge regarding the properties and toxicity of these particles at environmentally relevant concentrations, specifically regarding the role of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) generated during TWP photoaging, remains limited. In this study, the evolution of EPFRs on TWP under different photoaging times and their adverse effects on Caenorhabditis elegans were systematically investigated. The photoaging process primarily resulted in the formation of EPFRs and reactive oxygen species (O2•-, ⋅OH, and 1O2), altering the physicochemical properties of TWP. The exposure of nematodes to 100 μg/L of TWP-50 (TWP with a photoaging time of 50 d) led to a significant decrease in locomotory behaviors (e.g., head thrashes, body bends, and wavelength) and neurotransmitter contents (e.g., dopamine, glutamate, and serotonin). Similarly, the expression of neurotransmission-related genes was reduced in nematodes exposed to TWP-50. Furthermore, the addition of free-radical inhibitors significantly suppressed TWP-induced neurotoxicity. Notably, correlation analysis revealed a significantly negative correlation between EPFRs levels and the locomotory behaviors and neurotransmitter contents of nematodes. Thus, it was concluded that EPFRs on photoaged TWP induce neurotoxicity by affecting neurotransmission. These findings elucidate the toxicity effects and mechanisms of EPFRs, emphasizing the importance of considering their contributions when evaluating the environmental risks associated with TWP.

Abstract
Tire road wear particles (TRWPs) are a large source of microplastics in the environment, while the quantification of TRWPs is still challenging due to the complex interferences and the uncertainties and inconsistencies among different methods. This study developed a TRWPs quantification method using optimized pretreatments and bonded-sulfur as marker. Road dust samples (n = 48) were collected, pretreatments including density separation, digestion and extraction were optimized to remove interferences of the bonded-sulfur (minerals, sulfur-containing proteins, hydrosoluble/hydrophobic sulfur-containing substances). Presence of TRWPs in the samples was confirmed by microscopy and scanning electron microscopyenergy dispersive spectrometry. Bonded-sulfur in the samples were quantified by inductively coupled plasmamass spectrometry (ICPMS). Additionally, bonded-sulfur in tire wear particles (TWPs) abraded from tires of top 10 best-selling brands were measured to calculate conversion factor (1.1 ×104 μg/g) for the quantification of TRWPs in real samples. TRWPs contents were 5.40 × 104 μg/g11.02 × 104 μg/g and 2.36 × 104 μg/g5.30 × 104 μg/g in samples from heavy and light traffic roads, respectively. The method provided better recoveries (88-107%, n = 18) and repeatability (RSD=2.0-7.9%, n = 3) compared to methods using rubber, benzothiazole and organic zinc as markers. Furthermore, stability of the bonded-sulfur was validated by Raman and ICPMS. Thus, this accurate and stable quantification method could promote research on TRWPs.

Abstract
Non-exhaust PM emissions from vehicles in real road have been conducted, but heavy vehicles have rarely been tested. In this study, PM2.5 and PM10 samples were directly collected from a tire of a moving bus and the composition was analyzed to investigate the sources of PM emissions. Driving tests were conducted at a proving ground (PG) and a city road (CR). PM2.5 emissions considerably increased when the lateral force of the tire increased and the vehicle accelerated. The PM emission rate was higher in the PG test than in the CR test because of the harsher driving conditions at PG. The emission rates of PM10 in the PG and CR tests were higher than those of PM2.5 by approximately 6 and 11 times, respectively. In the PG and CR tests, the proportions of tire wear particles (TWPs) were 4.9% and 2.1% in the PM2.5 samples, and 6.8% and 8.2% in the PM10 samples, respectively. Furthermore, TWPs with PM (TWPPM) were generated by other sources: secondary production of TWPPM by fragmentation of TWPs and resuspension of TWPPM on the road. The contributions of other sources to TWP2.5 generation were at least 6% and 57% in the PG and CR tests, respectively, whereas that to TWP10 generation was at least 3.5% in the CR test. Iron derived from brake abrasion and mineral particles was observed in the PM samples, and the Fe concentrations were higher in the PM10 samples than in the PM2.5 samples by over 9 and 18 times for the PG and CR tests, respectively. Sulfur sources, such as TWPs, exhaust gas, and bitumen, were observed in the PM samples. Based on our findings, we recommend that road wear particles should be removed from roads to reduce PM emissions upon driving.

Abstract
Roadway particles (RP) that can be collected with on-vehicle system, consist of a mixture of Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) with other traffic-derived particles (exhaust or non-exhaust) and/or biogenic compounds and represent a significant source of xenobiotics, susceptible to reach the different environmental compartments. The study of the RP fate is thus a major challenge to tackle in order to understand their degradation and impact. They offer a variety of carbon sources potentially usable by microorganisms, ranging from the tire-derived plasticizers, vulcanizing agents, protective agents and their transformation products, to other traffic, road and environmental-derived contaminants. A multi-analytical approach was implemented to characterize RP and study their biodegradation. Kinetics of RP extractions were monitored during 21 days in water, methanol, acetone and chloroform to identify leaching and extractable compounds and monitor the particle composition. The results confirmed that hundreds of readily leachable chemicals can be extracted from RP directly into water according to a dynamic process with time while additional poorly soluble compounds remain in the particles. Mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS and GC-MS) allowed us to propose 296 putative compounds using an extensive rubber database. The capacity of 6 bacterial strains, belonging to Rhodococcus, Pseudomonas and Streptomyces genera, to biodegrade RP was then evaluated over 14 days of incubation. The selected strains were able to grow on RP using various substrates. Elastomer monitoring by 1H NMR revealed a significant 12 % decrease of the extractable SBR fraction when the particles were incubated with Rhodococcus ruber. After incubation, the biodegradation of 171 compounds among leachable and extractable compounds was evaluated. Fatty acids and alkanes from rubber plasticizers and paraffin waxes were the most degraded putative compounds by the six strains tested, reaching 75 % of biodegradation for some of them.

Abstract
p-Phenylenediamines (PPDs), an important type of rubber antioxidants, have received little study on their environmental fate, particularly for their vital photodegradation process in water environment. Accordingly, N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (6PPD), as a representative of PPDs, was investigated experimentally and theoretically for its photodegradation in water. Rapid photodegradation occurred when 6PPD was exposed to illumination especially UV region irradiation. Under acidic conditions, the photodegradation of 6PPD accelerated mainly due to the increased absorption of long wavelength irradiation by ionized 6PPD. Nine photodegradation products (e.g., 6PPD-quinone (6PPDQ)) of 6PPD were identified by an ultra-performance liquid chromatography QTOF mass spectrometry. Molar yields of photoproducts such as 6PPDQ, aniline, 4-aminodiphenylamine, and 4-hydroxydiphenylamine were 0.03 ± 0.00, 0.10 ± 0.01, 0.03 ± 0.02, and 0.08 ± 0.01, respectively. Mechanisms involved in 6PPD photodegradation include photoexcitation, direct photolysis, self-sensitized photodegradation, and 1O2 oxidation, as demonstrated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, scavenging experiments, and the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). Notably, the toxicity of the reaction solution formed during the photodegradation of 6PPD was increased by the formation of highly toxic products (e.g., 6PPDQ). This study provides the first explanation for photodegradation mechanisms of 6PPD and confirms the pathway of 6PPDQ produced by the photoreaction in water environment.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWPs) are one of the environment's most important emission sources of microplastics. In this work, chemical identification of these particles was carried out in highway stormwater runoff through cross-validation techniques for the first time. Optimization of a pre-treatment method (i.e., extraction and purification) was provided to extract TWPs, avoiding their degradation and denaturation, to prevent getting low recognizable identification and consequently underestimates in the quantification. Specific markers were used for TWPs identification comparing real stormwater samples and reference materials via FTIR-ATR, Micro-FTIR, and Pyrolysis-gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry (Pyr-GC/MS). Quantification of TWPs was carried out via Micro-FTIR (microscopic counting); the abundance ranged from 220,371 ± 651 TWPs/L to 358,915 ± 831 TWPs/L, while the higher mass was 39,6 ± 9 mg TWPs/L and the lowest 31,0 ± 8 mg TWPs/L. Most of the TWPs analyzed were less than 100 μm in size. The sizes were also confirmed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), including the presence of potential nano TWPs in the samples. Elemental analysis via SEM supported that a complex mixture of heterogeneous composition characterizes these particles by agglomerating organic and inorganic particles that could derive from brake and road wear, road pavement, road dust, asphalts, and construction road work. Due to the analytical lack of knowledge about TWPs chemical identification and quantification in scientific literature, this study significantly contributes to providing a novel pre-treatment and analytical methodology for these emerging contaminants in highway stormwater runoff. The results of this study highlight the uttermost necessity to employ cross-validation techniques, i.e., FTIR-ATR, Micro-FTIR, Pyr-GC/MS, and SEM for the TWPs identification and quantification in the real environmental samples.

Abstract
The development of a 100% sustainable tire has emerged as a milestone for several tire companies across the globe. It has created new commercial opportunities for the biobased, renewable, and recycled polymer materials. However, there are concerns that the incorporation of such sustainable new materials may have an undesirable impact on the main performance properties of the tire. At the same time, with new capabilities and product innovations, it can help us meet society's need in a more sustainable fashion and protect the environment. This Feature first outlines the opportunities and need for sustainable tire materials. Next, it describes the main types of sustainable material attributes in tire material, elastomers, reinforcing agents, fibers, and plasticizers, among a few others. The challenges to achieving the performance properties are discussed with possible design guidelines. Recent approaches to the tire attributes are described in the form of a meticulous overview of the existing literature, with a critical analysis of some of them. This contribution attempts to highlight, in a comprehensive way, sustainable tire materials on the basis of recent research advancements, existing challenges, and prospective future scope in this field.

Abstract
Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) are becoming an important research question with potential risks on ecological system. A comprehensive understanding of their detection and quantification in soils are challenged by the inherent technological inconsistencies, lack of well-set standardized methods, and generalized protocols. Reference tire cryogrinds were subjected to abiotic weathering. Next, the total environmental availability from parent elastomers and the release of additives from tire tread compounds were evaluated using mass concentration factors obtained from abiotic weathered tire cryogrinds. Headspace Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (HS-GC-MS) was employed as a nontargeted, suspect screening analysis technique to identify the tire related intermediates. Benzothiazole, 1,2-dihydro-2,2,4-trimethylquinoline (TMQ), aniline, phenol and benzoic acid were detected as tire tetrahydrofuran leachates. Total environmental availability of TMQ and benzothiazole were in the range of 1.7 × 10-3 and 0.11, respectively. Benzene and benzoic acid derivatives were identified as marker compounds for environmental samples. A TRWP content evaluation was made possible by quantifying marker concentrations and reference tire cryogrind formulation. TRWP content in the size range of 1-5 mm was between 800 and 1300 μg/g and 1200-3100 μg/g TRWP in Ohio and Kansas soil. For TRWP less than 1 mm, 0.15-2.1 wt% content was observed in Kansas and Ohio samples and were seemingly dependent on the locations and the traffic. This simple, widely applicable quantification method for TRWP analysis provides a database of tire degradation and TRWP intermediates. The TRWP content research is critical for further TRWP research development in terrestrial environment.
