Carry-Over Effects Across Metamorphosis of a Pesticide on Female Lifetime Fitness Strongly Depend on Egg Hatching Phenology: A Longitudinal Study under Seminatural Conditions

The hydroperiod gradient drives species sorting in pace-of-life strategies but not in stressor sensitivity in Lestes damselfly larvae

Many species sort along environmental gradients, whereby species traits are predicted to shift as integrated sets of life-history, behavioural and physiological traits thereby making up a fast-to-slow pace-of-life continuum. This has also been predicted to cause species differences in stressor sensitivity along such gradients with a faster pace-of-life causing a higher sensitivity. We tested for predictable differences in pace-of-life and in stressor sensitivity for a set of four Lestes damselfly species that separate along the hydroperiod gradient. We reared in a common-garden experiment, larvae of two vernal pond specialists, L. dryas and L. barbarus, and two hydroperiod generalists, L. sponsa and L. virens, and exposed them to transient food deprivation and pesticide exposure, and monitored a set of life-history, behavioural and physiological traits both in the larvae and in the adults. Consistent with the time constraints imposed by the shorter hydroperiod of their habitat, the vernal pond specialists showed a faster pace-of-life (faster growth and development, and higher activity levels) than the hydroperiod generalists. Yet, in contrast with theory, this was not associated with a higher metabolic rate and a lower energy budget, neither with a higher oxidative damage to lipids. Both food deprivation and pesticide exposure were experienced as stressors, and species showed compensatory responses to cope with the transient food deprivation, including compensatory growth and delayed development. Nevertheless, the sensitivity to these stressors could not be predicted based on the difference in pace-of-life strategy between the vernal pond specialists and the hydroperiod generalists because of a decoupling of life-history and physiological traits. Our study indicates that while pace-of-life strategies change largely predictably along the hydroperiod gradient, these are not reliable predictors of species sensitivity to stressors. This highlights the need to consider also physiological traits to arrive at a generalizable predictive framework of species sensitivity to global change.

Cross-Ecosystem Fluxes of Pesticides from Prairie Wetlands Mediated by Aquatic Insect Emergence: Implications for Terrestrial Insectivores

Contaminants alter the quantity and quality of insect prey available to terrestrial insectivores. In agricultural regions, the quantity of aquatic insects emerging from freshwaters can be impacted by insecticides originating from surrounding croplands. We hypothesized that, in such regions, adult aquatic insects could also act as vectors of pesticide transfer to terrestrial food webs. To estimate insect-mediated pesticide flux from wetlands embedded in an important agricultural landscape, semipermanetly and temporarily ponded wetlands were surveyed in cropland and grassland landscapes across a natural salinity gradient in the Prairie Pothole Region of North Dakota (USA) during the bird breeding season in 2015 and 2016 (n = 14 and 15 wetlands, respectively). Current-use pesticides, including the herbicide atrazine and the insecticides bifenthrin and imidacloprid, were detected in newly emerged insects. Pesticide detections were similar in insects emerging from agricultural and grassland wetlands. Biomass of emerging aquatic insects decreased 43%, and insect-mediated pesticide flux increased 50% along the observed gradient in concentrations of insecticides in emerging aquatic insects (from 3 to 577 ng total insecticide g^-1 insect). Overall, adult aquatic insects were estimated to transfer between 2 and 180 µg total pesticide wetland^-1  d^-1 to the terrestrial ecosystem. In one of the 2 study years, biomass of emerging adult aquatic insects was also 73% lower from agricultural than grassland wetlands and was dependent on salinity. Our results suggest that accumulated insecticides reduce the availability of adult aquatic insect prey for insectivores and potentially increase insectivore exposure to insect-borne pesticides. Adult aquatic insects retain pesticides across metamorphosis and may expose insectivores living near both agricultural and grassland wetlands to dietary sources of toxic chemicals. The effect of warming on pesticide toxicity is reversed between developmental stages in the mosquito Culex pipiens

A better understanding of interactions between pesticides and warming is important to improve ecological risk assessment in a warming world. Current insights are almost exclusively based on studies that exposed animals simultaneously to both warming and a pesticide and focused on effects during the pesticide exposure period and within a single developmental stage. We studied two ignored aspects of the interplay between warming and pesticide exposure: (i) the role of delayed effects after the pesticide exposure period, and (ii) the dependence on the developmental stage. We carried out a longitudinal experiment from the egg stage to the adult stage in the mosquito Culex pipiens where we crossed a warming treatment (20 °C vs 24 °C) with 48 h exposures to the pesticide chlorpyrifos in three developmental stages (early L1 larvae, late L4 larvae and adults). Chlorpyrifos induced mild to moderate mortality in all developmental stages (10-30%). A key finding was that warming shaped the chlorpyrifos-induced mortality but in opposite directions between stages. Chlorpyrifos was 7% less toxic under warming in L1 larvae, yet more toxic under warming in L4 larvae (22%) and in adult males (33%), while toxicity did not change under warming in adult females. We hypothesize that the general, stage-specific differences in the effects of warming on body size (increased size in early larvae, decreased size in later stages) caused the reversal of the effects of warming on toxicity between stages. Previous larval exposure to chlorpyrifos caused delayed effects that strongly reduced survival to the adult stage (̰25% at 24 °C). Notably, warming also modulated these delayed mortality effects in opposite ways between developmental stages, matching the patterns of mortality during the pesticide exposure periods. Integrating the general stage-specific patterns of how warming shapes body size is important to advance our mechanistic understanding of the interactions between pesticides and warming.

Sublethal insecticide exposure of an herbivore alters the response of its predator

Sublethal insecticide exposure poses risks for many non-target organisms and is a challenge for successful implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) programs. Next to detrimental effects of short-term insecticide exposure on fitness-related traits of organisms, also properties such as chemical signaling traits can be altered, which mediate intra- and interspecific communication. We investigated the effects of different durations of larval sublethal exposure to the pyrethroid lambda-cyhalothrin on performance traits of larvae and adults of the herbivorous mustard leaf beetle, Phaedon cochleariae. Moreover, by applying a direct contact and olfactometer bioassays, we determined the reaction of a generalist predator, the ant Myrmica rubra, towards insecticide-exposed and unexposed herbivore larvae and their secretions. Already short-term sublethal insecticide exposure of a few days caused a prolonged larval development and a reduced adult body mass of males. These effects may result from an insecticide-induced reduction in energy reserves. Furthermore, ants responded more frequently to insecticide-exposed than to unexposed larvae of P. cochleariae and their secretions. This increased responsiveness of ants towards insecticide-exposed larvae may be due to an insecticide-induced change in synthesis of chrysomelidial and epichrysomelidial, the dominant compounds of the larval secretion, which act defensive against various generalist predators. In conclusion, the results highlight that short-term insecticide exposure can impair the fitness of an herbivorous species due to both direct toxic effects and an increased responsiveness of predators. Consequently, exposure of single non-target species can have consequences for ecological communities in both natural habitats and IPM programs.

An amphibian with a contracting range is not more vulnerable to pesticides in outdoor experimental communities than common species

In areas with heavy pesticide use, it is easy to attribute population declines to environmental contamination. The Blanchard's cricket frogs (Acris blanchardi) is an amphibian experiencing declines and range contractions across its distribution in the Midwest Corn Belt (USA). Experimental studies suggest that cricket frogs are sensitive to pesticides, but there are few studies examining this species' susceptibility to contaminants in realistic environments or comparing relative impacts with other anuran species. I reared 3 summer breeding anurans in outdoor mesocosms posthatching through metamorphosis to examine the effects of 2 insecticides (imidacloprid and carbaryl) and 1 herbicide (glyphosate with polyoxyethylene tallow amine) on larval development and metamorphosis. Cricket frogs were positively affected by insecticide exposure, likely a result of changes in the food web that increased food abundance. However, metamorphosis of green frogs (Lithobates clamitans) and gray tree frogs (Hyla chrysoscelis) appeared unaffected by pesticide exposure. The results of the present study suggest that the impacts of pesticides alone are unlikely to have population-level impacts for the anurans examined.
