Abstract
The ubiquitous presence of pharmaceutical pollutants in the environment significantly threatens human health and aquatic ecosystems. Conventional wastewater treatment processes often fall short of effectively removing these emerging contaminants. Therefore, the development of high-performance adsorbents is crucial for environmental remediation. This research utilizes molecular simulation to explore the potential of novel modified metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in pharmaceutical pollutant removal, paving the way for the design of efficient wastewater treatment strategies. Utilizing UIO-66, a robust MOF, as the base material, we developed UIO-66 functionalized with chitosan (CHI) and oxidized chitosan (OCHI). These modified MOFs' physical and chemical properties were first investigated through various characterization techniques. Subsequently, molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) were employed to elucidate the adsorption mechanisms of rosuvastatin (ROSU) and simvastatin (SIMV), two prevalent pharmaceutical pollutants, onto these nanostructures. MCS calculations demonstrated a significant enhancement in the adsorption energy by incorporating CHI and OCHI into UIO-66. This increased ROSU from -14,522 to -16,459 kcal/mol and SIMV from -17,652 to -21,207 kcal/mol. Moreover, MDS reveals ROSU rejection rates in neat UIO-66 to be at 40%, rising to 60 and 70% with CHI and OCHI. Accumulation rates increase from 4 Å in UIO-66 to 6 and 9 Å in UIO-CHI and UIO-OCHI. Concentration analysis shows SIMV rejection surges from 50 to 90%, with accumulation rates increasing from 6 to 11 Å with CHI and OCHI in UIO-66. Functionalizing UIO-66 with CHI and OCHI significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity and selectivity for ROSU and SIMV. Abundant hydroxyl and amino groups facilitated strong interactions, improving performance over that of unmodified UIO-66. Surface functionalization plays a vital role in customizing the MOFs for pharmaceutical pollutant removal. These insights guide next-gen adsorbent development, offering high efficiency and selectivity for wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Water and industries are intangible units of the globe that are always set to meet the population's demand. The global population depends on one-third of freshwater increasing the demand. The increase in population along with urbanization has polluted the fresh water resources. The pharmaceutical industry is marked as an emerging contaminant of water pollution. The most common type of pharmaceutical drugs that are detected in the environment includes antibiotics, analgesics, NSAIDs, and pain-relieving drugs. These drugs alter the food chain of the organisms causing chaos mainly in the marine ecosystem. Pharmaceutical drugs are found only in shallow amounts (ng/mg) they have a huge impact on the living system. The consumption of water contaminated with pharmaceutical ingredients can disrupt reproduction, hormonal imbalance, cancer, and respiratory problems. Various methods are used to remove these chemicals from the environment. In this review, we mainly focused on the emerging hybrid technologies and their significance in the effective treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater. This review paper primarily elaborates on the merits and demerits of existing conventional technologies helpful in developing integrated technologies for the modern era of pharmaceutical effluent treatment. This review paper further in detail discusses the various strategies of eco-friendly bioremediation techniques namely biostimulation, bioaugmentation, bacterial degradation, mycoremediation, phytoremediation, and others for the ultimate removal of pharmaceutical contaminants in wastewater. The review makes clear that targeted and hybrid solutions are what the world will require in the future to get rid of these pharmacological prints.

Abstract
Magnetic nanoparticle-incorporated metal organic frameworks (MOF) are potential composites for various applications such as catalysis, water treatment, drug delivery, gas storage, chemical sensing, and heavy metal ion removal. MOFs exhibits high porosity and flexibility enabling guest species like heavy metal ions to diffuse into bulk structure. Additionally, shape and size of the pores contribute to selectivity of the guest materials. Incorporation of magnetic materials allows easy collection of adsorbent materials from solution system making the process simple and cost-effective. In view of the above advantages in the present review article, we are discussing recent advances of different magnetic material-incorporated MOF (Mg-MOF) composite for application in photocatalytic degradation of dyes and toxic chemicals, adsorption of organic compounds, adsorption of heavy metal ions, and adsorption of dyes. The review initially discusses on properties of Mg-MOF, different synthesis techniques such as mechanochemical, sonochemical (ultrasound) synthesis, slow evaporation and diffusion methods, solvo(hydro)-thermal and iono-thermal method, microwave-assisted method, microemulsion method post-synthetic modification template strategies and followed by application in waste water treatment.

Abstract
In this study, a magnetic core-shell metal-organic framework (MOF) nanocomposite, Fe3O4-COOH@UiO-66-NH2, was synthesized for tumor-targeting drug delivery by incorporating carboxylate groups as functional groups onto ferrite nanoparticle surfaces, followed by fabrication of the UiO-66-NH2 shell using a facile self-assembly approach. The anticancer drug quercetin (QU) was loaded into the magnetic core-shell nanoparticles. The synthesized magnetic nanoparticles were comprehensively evaluated through multiple techniques, including FT-IR, PXRD, FE-SEM, TEM, EDX, BET, UV-vis, ZP, and VSM. Drug release investigations were conducted to investigate the release behavior of QU from the nanocomposite at two different pH values (7.4 and 5.4). The results revealed that QU@Fe3O4-COOH@UiO-66-NH2 exhibited a high loading capacity of 43.1% and pH-dependent release behavior, maintaining sustained release characteristics over a prolonged duration of 11 days. Furthermore, cytotoxicity assays using the human breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 and the normal cell line HEK-293 were performed to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of QU, UiO-66-NH2, Fe3O4-COOH, Fe3O4-COOH@UiO-66-NH2, and QU@Fe3O4-COOH@UiO-66-NH2. Treatment with QU@Fe3O4-COOH@UiO-66-NH2 substantially reduced the cell viability in cancerous MDA-MB-231 cells. Cellular uptake and cell death mechanisms were further investigated, demonstrating the internalization of QU@Fe3O4-COOH@UiO-66-NH2 by cancer cells and the induction of cancer cell death through the apoptosis pathway. These findings highlight the considerable potential of Fe3O4-COOH@UiO-66-NH2 as a targeted nanocarrier for the delivery of anticancer drugs.

Abstract
One green adsorbent, UiO-66-NH2 modified peanut shell (c-PS-MOF), was prepared in a green synthetic route for improving the capture level of aspirin (ASP) and fluoride ion (F-). The adsorption properties of c-PS-MOF were evaluated by batch experiments and its physicochemical properties were explored by various characterization methods. The results showed that c-PS-MOF exhibited a wide range of pH applications (ASP: 2-10; F-: 3-12) and high salt resistance in the capturing processes of ASP and F-. The unit adsorption capacity of c-PS-MOF was as high as 84.7 mg·g-1 for ASP as pH = 3 and 11.2 mg·g-1 for F- under pH = 6 at 303 K from Langmuir model, respectively. When the solid-liquid ratio was 2 g·L-1, the content of ASP (C0 = 100 mg·L-1) and F- (C0 = 20 mg·L-1) in solution can be reduced to 0.48 mg·L-1 and 1.05 mg·L-1 separately. The recycling of c-PS-MOF can be realized with 5 mmol·L-1 NaOH as eluent. Analysis of simulated water samples showed that c-PS-MOF could be used to remove ASP and F- from actual water. The c-PS-MOF is promising to bind ASP and F- from rivers, lakes, etc.

Abstract
Separation is one of the most energy-intensive processes in the chemical industry, and membrane-based separation technology contributes significantly to energy conservation and emission reduction. Additionally, metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have been widely investigated and have been found to have enormous potential in membrane separation due to their uniform pore size and high designability. Notably, pure MOF films and MOF mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are the core of the "next generation" MOF materials. However, there are some tough issues with MOF-based membranes that affect separation performance. For pure MOF membranes, problems such as framework flexibility, defects, and grain orientation need to be addressed. Meanwhile, there still exist bottlenecks for MMMs such as MOF aggregation, plasticization and aging of the polymer matrix, poor interface compatibility, etc. Herein, corresponding methods are introduced to solve these problems, including inhibiting framework flexibility, regulating synthesis conditions, and enhancing the interaction between MOF and substrate. A series of high-quality MOF-based membranes have been obtained based on these techniques. Overall, these membranes revealed desired separation performance in both gas separation (e.g., CO2, H2, and olefin/paraffin) and liquid separation (e.g., water purification, organic solvent nanofiltration, and chiral separation).

Abstract
Developing a novel, simple, and cost-effective analytical technique with high enrichment capacity and selectivity is crucial for environmental monitoring and remediation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous coordination polymers that are self-assembly synthesized from organic linkers and inorganic metal ions/metal clusters. Magnetic metal-organic framework (MMOF) composites are promising candidate among the new-generation sorbent materials available for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of environmental contaminants due to their superparamagnetism properties, high crystallinity, permanent porosity, ultrahigh specific surface area, adaptable pore shape/sizes, tunable functionality, designable framework topology, rapid and ultrahigh adsorption capacity, and reusability. In this review, we focus on recent scientific progress in the removal of heavy metal ions present in contaminated aquatic system by using MMOF composites. Different types of MMOFs, their synthetic approaches, and various properties that are harnessed for removal of heavy metal ions from contaminated water are discussed briefly. Adsorption mechanisms involved, adsorption capacity, and regeneration of the MMOF sorbents as well as recovery of heavy metal ions adsorbed that are reported in the last ten years have been discussed in this review. Moreover, particular prospects, challenges, and opportunities in future development of MMOFs towards their greener synthetic approaches for their practical industrial applications have critically been considered in this review.

Abstract
The industrial and agricultural revolution has posed a serious and potential threat to environment. The industrial and agricultural pollutants are directly released into the environment. This issue has clinched the scientists to work on different materials in order to decontaminate the environment. Among all other techniques, the membrane filtration technology has fascinated researchers to overcome the pollution by its promising features. This review elaborated various membrane synthesis approaches along with their mechanism of filtration, their applications towards environmental remediation such as removal of heavy metals, degradation of dyes, pharma waste, organic pollutants, as well as gas sensing applications. The membrane synthesis using different sort of materials in which inorganic, carbon materials, polymers and metal organic framework (MOFs) are highlighted. These materials have been involved in synthesis of membrane to make it more cost effective and productive to remove such hazardous materials from wastewater. Based on the reported literature, it has been found that inorganic and polymer membranes are facing issues of brittleness and swelling prior to the industrial scale applications related to the high temperature and pressure which needs to be addressed to enhance the permeation performance.

Abstract
A new zirconium-based adsorption material (UiO-66-AMP) was prepared by modifying UiO-66-NH2 with 5-adenosine to effectively remove Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from wastewater. The SEM, EDS, XRS and FT-IR characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of UiO-66-AMP. We conducted a sets of experiments to test the adsorption effectiveness of UiO-66-AMP for Pb(II) and Cr(VI). The maximum adsorption capacity of UiO-66-AMP for Cr(VI) (pH=2) and Pb(II) (pH=4) are 196.60 and 189.69 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, which indicates that the adsorption is a single-layer chemical process. Gibbs free energy (∆G) indicates that the adsorption of Pb(II) is an exothermic reaction, while the adsorption of Cr(VI) is an endothermic reaction. At the same time, the adsorbent maintains excellent adsorption capacity at least after 4 cycles. The good adsorption performance of UiO-66-AMP towards the metal ions was attributed to the surface complexation and electrostatic interactions. Therefore, the new adsorbent has obvious application prospect to remove Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Abstract
There is an increasing level of various pollutants and their persistence in aquatic environments. The improper use of antibiotics and their inefficient metabolism in organisms result in their release into aquatic environments. Antibiotic abuse has led to hazardous effects on human health. Thereby, efficient removal of pharmaceuticals, particularly antibiotics, from wastewater and contaminated water bodies is greatly interested in international research communities. Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, as a hybrid group of material containing metallic center and organic linkers, offer a porous structure that is highly efficient for removing different pollutants from contaminated water and wastewater streams. This article aims to review the recent advancement in using MOF-based adsorbents and catalysts for the removal of pharmaceuticals, especially antibiotics, from polluted water. Abstract
Highly selective glycopeptide enrichment is important before mass spectrometry analysis because of the ultra-low abundance of glycopeptides in the peptide mixtures. Herein, a UiO-66-NH2-based magnetic composite was prepared and used for the hydrophilic enrichment of glycopeptides. The composite was modified with phytic acid (PA) molecules by partially replacing 2-aminoterephthalic acid ligands in UiO-66-NH2, with electrostatic interactions also promoting this modification process. Based on the hydrophilicity of both the PA molecules and the UiO-66-NH2 skeleton, the resulting material, denoted as MUiO-66-NH2/PA, showed excellent dual hydrophilicity towards glycopeptide enrichment. Compared with pure UiO-66-NH2, the specific surface area and hydrophilicity of the prepared material were increased, and MUiO-66-NH2/PA exhibited good magnetic responsiveness to facilitate a convenient enrichment procedure. HRP and IgG were used as standard proteins to evaluate the glycopeptide enrichment properties, with 21 and 34 glycopeptides enriched from their tryptic digests. Furthermore, MUiO-66-NH2/PA showed outstanding sensitivity (1 fmol/μL) and selectivity (HRP/BSA = 1:1000), and achieved remarkable glycopeptide enrichment performance for practical human serum samples. Notably, MUiO-66-NH2/PA showed perfect reusability and stability, achieving enrichment performance after five cycles similar to that of the first use. This material can be used for glycopeptide enrichment to obtain further glycosylation information, providing the possibility for cancer treatment.

Abstract
A novel metal-organic framework (UiO-66-PTC) for efficient removal of Pb2+ ions from wastewater has been prepared by using 4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazide as the modifier. Various characterizations showed that UiO-66-PTC was successfully synthesized. The absorption results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) is 200.17 mg/g at 303 K and optimal pH 5. The adsorption kinetic follows the pseudo-second-order model and the adsorption isotherms fit the Langmuir model. This shows that Pb(II) is a single-layer adsorption on the surface of the adsorbent and the rate-controlling step is chemical adsorption. The thermodynamic results show that the adsorption process can proceed spontaneously, belong to the exothermic reaction. The adsorbent can selectively uptake lead ions from wastewater containing multiple interfering ions. After four adsorption and desorption cycles, the adsorption efficiency is still high. The adsorption mechanism of Pb(II) on the adsorbent is mainly through the chelation of Pb(II) with N and S atoms. These results indicate that UiO-66-PTC is an effective material for efficiently and selectivity removal of Pb(II) from solution, which is of practical significance.

Abstract
The significant upsurge in the demand for freshwater has prompted various developments towards water sustainability. In this context, several materials have gained remarkable interest for the removal of emerging contaminants from various freshwater sources. Among the currently investigated materials for water treatment, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), a developing class of porous materials, have provided excellent platforms for the separation of several pollutants from water. The structural modularity and the striking chemical/physical properties of MOFs have provided more room for target-specific environmental applications. However, MOFs limit their practical applications in water treatment due to poor processability issues of the intrinsically fragile and powdered crystalline forms. Nevertheless, growing efforts are recognized to impart macroscopic shapability to render easy handling shapes for real-time industrial applications. Furthermore, efforts have been devoted to improve the stabilities of MOFs that are subjected to fragile collapse in aqueous environments expanding their use in water treatment. Advances made in MOF based material design have headed towards the use of MOF based aerogels/hydrogels, MOF derived carbons (MDCs), hydrophobic MOFs and magnetic framework composites (MFCs) to remediate water from contaminants and for the separation of oils from water. This review is intended to highlight some of the recent trends followed in MOF based material engineering towards effective water regeneration.

Abstract
The recovery of gold from wastewater has received significant attention in the last years due to its high economic value and low availability. A novel chitosan-based adsorbent (CS-GTU) was successfully synthesized by using formaldehyde as a crosslinker between chitosan and guanylthiourea, and applied for selective adsorption of AuIII from an aqueous medium. Through batch experiments, the maximum adsorption capacity of CS-GTU for AuIII could reach up to 695.63 mg/g at pH 5.0, and the adsorption process followed the Pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, indicating that the monolayer chemisorption possibly occurred on the adsorbent surfaces. The adsorption was an enthalpy driven and spontaneous chemical process based on thermodynamic analysis. Furthermore, the adsorbent has demonstrated outstanding selectivity toward AuIII from multi-metallic solutions, and five cycled experiments of adsorption-desorption showed that CS-GTU could be efficiently regenerated. Experimental breakthrough curves were successfully simulated by using the Thomas model, which can fit the experimental data with the correlated curve (R2 > 0.9) well. This improvement in adsorption was a consequence of the complexation and electrostatic attraction of gold ions with the abundant sulfur/nitrogen-containing groups. The CS-GTU beads can be considered as a suitable and efficient adsorbent for gold ions in aqueous solutions.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to utilise pristine and magnetite-sucrose functionalized Nigella Sativa seeds as the adsorbents for the uptake of chromium(VI) and lead(II) ions from synthetic wastewater. Prestine Nigella Sativa seeds were labelled (PNS) and magnetite-sucrose functionalized Nigella Sativa seeds (FNS). The PNS and FNS composites were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The FTIR analysis of both adsorbents revealed the presence of vibrations assigned to 1749 and 1739 cm-1 (-C=O) for ketonic group for both adsorbents. The amide (-NH) peak was observed at 1533 and 1527 cm-1 on FNS and PNS composites, respectively, whilst the carboxyl group (-COOH) were observed at 1408 cm-1 on both adsorbents. The XRD results of FNS and PNS composites showed a combination of spinel structure and-Fe2O3 phase confirming the formation of iron oxide. The influence of operational conditions such as initial concentration, temperature, pH, and contact time was determined in batch adsorption system. The kinetic data of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) ions on both adsorbents was described by pseudo-first-order (PFO) model which suggested physisorption process. The sorption rate of Cr(VI) ions was quicker, it attained equilibrium in 20 min, and the rate of Pb(II) ions was slow in 90 min. Freundlich isotherm described the mechanism of Pb(II) ions adsorption on PNS and FNS composites. Langmuir best fitted the uptake of Cr(VI) ions on PNS and FNS. The results for both adsorbents showed that the removal uptake of Pb(II) ions increased when the initial concentration was increased; however, Cr(VI) uptake decreased when the initial concentration increased. The adsorption of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) ions on both adsorbents increased with temperature.

Abstract
An alarming number of contaminants of emerging concern, including active residues from pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), are increasingly being introduced in water systems and environmental matrices due to unavoidable outcomes of modern-day lifestyle. Most of the PPCPs based contaminants are not completely eliminated during the currently used water/wastewater treatment processes. Therefore, highly selective and significant removal of PPCPs from environmental matrices remains a scientific challenge. In recent years, a wide range of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-based nanocomposites have been designed and envisioned for environmental remediation applications. MOF-derived novel cues had shown an adsorptive capability for the extraction and removal of an array of trace constituents in environmental samples. Noteworthy features such as substantial surface area, size, dispersibility, tunable structure, and repeated use capability provide MOFs-derived platform a superiority over in-practice conventional adsorptive materials. This review provides a comprehensive evaluation of the efficient removal or mitigation of various categories of PPCPs by diverse types of MOF-derived adsorbents with suitable examples. The growing research investigations in this direction paves the way for designing more efficient porous nanomaterials that would be useful for the elimination of PPCPs, and separation perspectives.

Abstract
Metal-organic framework based carbon material UC-X was prepared by template method, and adopted to remove cephalosporins from aqueous solution. The effect of templates including cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide and sodium laurate was discussed. The UC-0.1 with the pore size of 5.38 nm has the best adsorption. According to FTIR spectrum, with the gradual increase of sodium laurate, the functional groups like CO increased, which promoted the adsorption capacity of cefepime in UC-X materials from 42.52 to 84.23 mg⋅g-1. The optimal conditions for the adsorption of cefepime were determined by the response surface method: the adsorption temperature was 25.8 °C, the initial pH value was 6.11, and the ionic strength was 1.13 g·L-1. Under the best adsorption condition, the adsorption-desorption experiments showed that the adsorption capacity of UC-0.1 material decreased by less than 10 % after five times usage, which indicated that its recycling property was competitive. The adsorption process conformed to the mixed-order kinetic model, and the error of equilibrium adsorption capacity between model fitting and actual experiments is not more than 1 %. The overall results of adsorption isotherm model and thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that Redlich-Peterson isothermal model could describe the adsorption process better.

Abstract
Mercury ions can cause a series of hazards to humans and the environment, even in trace amounts. Here, we designed a novel adsorbent (Cys-UiO-66) by functionalizing NH2-UiO-66 with l-cysteine for selective removal of Hg(II) from solution. The Cys-UiO-66 was characterized by different instruments. The adsorption property of Cys-UiO-66 was evaluated by batch methods. The maximum adsorption capacity was 350.14 mg/g at pH 5.0. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherm and kinetics models were in accord with the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models, respectively, evidencing that the adsorption behavior was dominated by monolayer chemisorption. The Cys-UiO-66 had better affinity for Hg(II) than other coexisting ions in wastewater and could be regenerated for at least five cycles. The results prove that Cys-UiO-66 is a talented and efficient sorbent for mercury ions.
