Transmetalation for DNA-Based Molecular Electronics

The rational design of molecular electronics remains a grand challenge of materials science. DNA nanotechnology has offered unmatched control over molecular geometry, but direct electronic functionalization is a challenge. Here a generalized method is presented for tuning the local band structure of DNA using transmetalation in metal-mediated base pairs (mmDNA). A method is developed for time-resolved X-ray diffraction using self-assembling DNA crystals to establish the exchange of Ag+ and Hg2+ in T:T base pairs driven by pH exchange. Transmetalation is tracked over six reaction phases as crystal pH is changed from pH 8.0 to 11.0, and vice versa. A detailed computational analysis of the electronic configuration and transmission in the ensuing crystal structures is then performed. This findings reveal a high conductance contrast in the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO) as a result of metalation. The ability to exchange single transition metal ions as a result of environmental stimuli heralds a means of modulating the conductance of DNA-based molecular electronics. In this way, both theoretical and experimental basis are established by which mmDNA can be leveraged to build rewritable memory devices and nanoelectronics.

Assessment of Density Functional Theory Methods for the Structural Prediction of Transition and Post-Transition Metal-Nucleic Acid Complexes

Understanding the structure of metal-nucleic acid systems is important for many applications such as the design of new pharmaceuticals, metal detection platforms, and nanomaterials. Herein, we explore the ability of 20 density functional theory (DFT) functionals to reproduce the crystal structure geometry of transition and post-transition metal-nucleic acid complexes identified in the Protein Data Bank and Cambridge Structural Database. The environmental extremes of the gas phase and implicit water were considered, and analysis focused on the global and inner coordination geometry, including the coordination distances. Although gas-phase calculations were unable to describe the structure of 12 out of the 53 complexes in our test set regardless of the DFT functional considered, accounting for the broader environment through implicit solvation or constraining the model truncation points to crystallographic coordinates generally afforded agreement with the experimental structure, suggesting that functional performance for these systems is likely due to the models rather than the methods. For the remaining 41 complexes, our results show that the reliability of functionals depends on the metal identity, with the magnitude of error varying across the periodic table. Furthermore, minimal changes in the geometries of these metal-nucleic acid complexes occur upon use of the Stuttgart-Dresden effective core potential and/or inclusion of an implicit water environment. The overall top three performing functionals are ωB97X-V, ωB97X-D3(BJ), and MN15, which reliably describe the structure of a broad range of metal-nucleic acid systems. Other suitable functionals include MN15-L, which is a cheaper alternative to MN15, and PBEh-3c, which is commonly used in QM/MM calculations of biomolecules. In fact, these five methods were the only functionals tested to reproduce the coordination sphere of Cu²⁺-containing complexes. For metal-nucleic acid systems that do not contain Cu²⁺, ωB97X and ωB97X-D are also suitable choices. These top-performing methods can be utilized in future investigations of diverse metal-nucleic acid complexes of relevance to biology and material science.

Gold Nanoparticles as Exquisite Colorimetric Transducers for Water Pollutant Detection

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are useful nanomaterials as transducers for colorimetric sensors because of their high extinction coefficient and ability to change color depending on aggregation status. Therefore, over the past few decades, AuNP-based colorimetric sensors have been widely applied in several environmental and biological applications, including the detection of water pollutants. According to various studies, water pollutants are classified into heavy metals or cationic metal ions, toxins, and pesticides. Notably, many researchers have been interested in AuNP that detect water pollutants with high sensitivity and selectivity, while offering no adverse environmental issues in terms of AuNP use. This review provides a representative overview of AuNP-based colorimetric sensors for detecting several water pollutants. In particular, we emphasize the advantages of AuNP as colorimetric transducers for water pollutant detection in terms of their low toxicity, high stability, facile processability, and unique optical properties. Next, we discuss the status quo and future prospects of AuNP-based colorimetric sensors for the detection of water pollutants. We believe that this review will promote research and development of AuNP as next-generation colorimetric transducers for water pollutant detection.

Novel thermo and ion-responsive copolymers based on metallo-base pair directed host-guest complexation for highly selective recognition of Hg2+ in aqueous solution

The development of materials with highly selective recognition towards Hg²⁺ is of great significance in environmental monitoring. Herein, a novel thermo-responsive copolymer with Hg²⁺ recognition property is prepared via thermally-initiated copolymerization of 5'-O-Acryloyl 5-methyl-uridine (APU) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM). The chemical structure and stimuli-sensitive properties of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-5-methyl-uridine) (P(NIPAM-co-APU)) linear polymers and hydrogel are thoroughly investigated. At the supramolecular level, P(NIPAM-co-APU) linear polymers could respond to both temperature and Hg²⁺ stimuli with highly selective recognition towards Hg²⁺ over other 18 metal ion species (at least 5 fold difference) and common anions. Upon capturing Hg²⁺ by APU units as host metal receptors, the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of P(NIPAM-co-APU, PNU-7 and PNU-11) linear polymers are significantly shifted more than 10 °C due to the formation of stable APU-Hg²⁺-APU directed host-guest complexes. Accordingly, at the macroscopic level, P(NIPAM-co-APU) hydrogel display selective and robust recognition of Hg²⁺ under optimum conditions, and its maximum Hg²⁺ uptake capacity was 33.1 mg g^-1. This work provides a new option for Hg²⁺ recognition with high selectivity, which could be facilely integrated with other smart systems to achieve satisfactory detection of environmental Hg²⁺.
