Abstract
The detection of volatile amines is necessary due to the serious toxicity hazards they pose to human skin, respiratory systems, and nervous systems. However, traditional amines detection methods require bulky equipment, high costs, and complex measurements. Herein, we report a new simple, rapid, convenient, and visual method for the detection of volatile amines based on the gas-solid reactions of tetrachloro-p-benzoquinone (TCBQ) and volatile amines. The gas-solid reactions of TCBQ with a variety of volatile amines showed a visually distinct color in a time-dependent manner. Moreover, TCBQ can be easily fabricated into simple and flexible rapid test strips for detecting and distinguishing n-propylamine from other volatile amines, including ethylamine, n-butyamine, n-pentamine, n-butyamine and dimethylamine, in less than 3 s without any equipment assistance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study was aimed to obtain an experimental bleaching agent by adding casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) in order to eliminate the mineral loss on the tooth surface after bleaching and to evaluate the bleaching effectiveness. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, experimental bleaching agents containing 1%, 3% CPP-ACP and without CPP-ACP were obtained. Bleaching effectiveness (color change), the effect of bleaching agents on mineral content (energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy), surface morphology (scanning electron microscope), and surface hardness of enamel (Vicker's microhardness) before and after bleaching were evaluated. The obtained data were statistically analyzed. RESULTS When the bleaching levels of the groups were compared, no statistically significant difference was observed between the control and 1% CPP-ACP groups (p > 0.05) while the addition of 3% CPP-ACP decreased significantly the effectiveness of the bleaching agent (p < 0.05). When the effects of experimental bleaching agents on surface hardness were examined, while the enamel surface hardness decreased statistically significantly after application in the control group (p < 0.05), no statistically significant change was observed in surface hardness after the application of 1% CPP-ACP containing bleaching agent (p > 0.05). However, a statistically significant increase was observed in surface hardness after the application of 3% CPP-ACP containing bleaching agent (p < 0.05). When the Ca and P ratio of the groups were compared, no statistically significant difference was observed between the control and 1% CPP-ACP groups (p > 0.05), while they increased significantly in 3% CPP-ACP group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The addition of 1% CPP-ACP to the bleaching agent had positive effects on the mineral content and surface hardness of the enamel, and did not negatively affect the whitening effectiveness. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Adding CPP-ACP to the bleaching agent at appropriate concentrations can eliminate possible negative effects without compromising the effectiveness of the bleaching agent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anthocyanin-based pH-sensing films have been widely fabricated for potential application in monitoring food freshness. However, the color fading of anthocyanins limits their application for the food industry due to their low stability. In addition, the color sensitivity and pH indicator ability of anthocyanin-based films currently available are not satisfied and need to be improved. RESULTS Chitosan/xanthan gum (CX)-based colorimetric films with addition of purple cabbage anthocyanin (PAN) and different amounts of rosmarinic acid (RA) were fabricated. RA copigmentation in chitosan/xanthan gum-purple cabbage anthocyanin-rosmarinic acid (CX-P-RA) films significantly improved the stability and pH response sensitivity of PAN, and the combined copigmentation of RA and xanthan gum exhibited an additive effect. The addition of RA significantly improved the tensile strength and elongation at break, thermal stability, antioxidant and antibacterial activities of CX-P-RA films. Moreover, addition of RA enhanced the pH sensitivity and colorimetry of CX-P-RA films, which exhibited a good response to different pH values. CX-P-RA2 film was tested to monitor the freshness of pork. It showed visible color changes during the storage of pork. In addition, the ∆E of CX-P-RA2 film was highly correlated with changes in total volatile basic nitrogen in pork (R2 = 0.951). CONCLUSION These results indicated that CX-P-RA2 film can be used as a pH-sensing indicator with good stability and high sensitivity for real-time monitoring of pork freshness. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE It is aimed to evaluate the color changes of upper central incisor teeth with different root maturation levels after 15 min of dehydration and rehydration. MATERIALS AND METHODS Using the Cvek classification, 60 participants were divided into five groups. A spectrophotometer, equipped with a specially designed jig, was utilized for color measurements. Following isolation, color measurements were conducted at the dehydration process intervals of baseline, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, and 15th minutes. After mouth rinsing, measurements were repeated at the same time intervals during the rehydration process. CIEDE2000 (ΔE00 ) values and the Whiteness Index (WID ) were obtained to compare the color changes between the initial readings and each interval. Friedman and Repeated Measures ANOVA were applied to compare classes by time during the dehydration and rehydration periods, as well as ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests to compare by classes for each time (p < 0.05). RESULTS Significant differences emerged in the mean ΔE00 values during dehydration and rehydration periods across all Cvek Classes (p < 0.05). While no statistically significant differences were observed among Classes at different minutes during the rehydration period (p > 0.05), it was particularly noted that the mean ΔE00 values of Classes 2, 3, and 5 at the 2nd minute of dehydration were statistically significantly higher than the mean of Class 1 (p < 0.05). However, when evaluating the starting and ending measurements of both dehydration and rehydration processes, and the overall change in ΔE00 and ΔWID , no significant variations were detected across the Classes (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In teeth that have just erupted and are still undergoing root development, dehydration in the initial minutes results in noticeable color changes. However, the change in ΔE00 and ΔWID of the teeth was found to be similar after the dehydration and rehydration processes. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE According to the Cvek classification, the lower color change in Class 1 teeth within the first 2 min of dehydration and the need for more than 15 min of rehydration for immature teeth with an open apex to return to their initial state after a 15-min dehydration are crucial for clinicians in terms of color assessment timing.

Abstract
The timely and cost-effective identification of the onset of corrosion and its progress would be critical for effectively maintaining structural integrity. Consequently, a series of fundamental experiments were conducted to capture the corrosion process on a steel plate using a new type of plastic optical fiber (POF) sensor. Electrolytic corrosion experiments were performed on a 5 mm thick steel plate immersed in an aqueous solution. The POF sensor installed on the upper side of the plate and directed downward detected the upward progression of the corrosion zone that formed on the underside of the plate. The results showed that the POF sensors could detect the onset of the upward-progressing corrosion front as it passed the 1 and 2 mm marks related to the thickness of the corroded zone. The POF sensors were designed to optically identify corrosion; therefore, the data obtained by these sensors could be processed using a newly developed graphic application software for smartphones and also identified by the naked eye. This method offered an easy and cost-effective solution for verifying the corrosion state of structural components.

Abstract
Background and purpose Color change caused by materials used for endodontic treatment is an important clinical issue. The current research examined the impact of internal bleaching with 10% carbamide peroxide on discolored teeth resulting from various types of sealers. Materials and methods In this study, 36 anterior teeth were cut from 1 mm beneath the cementoenamel junction (CEJ), and the samples were divided into three groups of 12. Then, AH26 (Tulsa Dental, Tulsa, OK), Endofill (Herpo Produtos Dentários Ltda, Petrópolis, Brazil), and AH Plus (Dentsply DeTrey, Konstanz, Germany) color change potential sealers were placed inside the pulp chamber. The cervical access cavity was covered with a thin layer of glass ionomer. After one month, the material was removed, and bleaching was done with 10% carbamide peroxide. The color of the samples was measured by a spectrophotometer before bleaching, one week after bleaching, and one week after bleaching again. The data were subjected to statistical analysis using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 16 (IBM SPSS Statistics, Armonk, NY), with a significance level set at P<0.05. Results The results showed that the factor of time and material used and the opposing effect of these two on the amount of L and ΔE were statistically significant (P<0.05). After one to two weeks of internal bleaching, all groups showed some degree of reduction in sealer-induced discoloration. In addition, in all groups, the largest difference in L was related to the difference in L0 and L2 (before bleaching and one week after bleaching again), and the lowest difference was related to the difference in L0 and L1. Also, the highest ΔE(T0,T1) belonged to the Endofill group, and this significantly differed from the AH26 group. AH26 showed the lowest value of ΔE(T0,T1), and after two weeks, the ΔE of all groups was higher than the clinically observable limit. The highest ΔE(T2,T0) among the groups belonged to the Endofill group. The ΔE(T2,T0) of AH26 and Endofill was significantly higher than AH Plus. Among all ΔE values, the AH Plus group had the lowest values. Conclusion Color change caused by Endofill and AH26 sealers showed a better response to internal bleaching than the AH Plus sealer.

Abstract
In the context of optimizing dental care for patients who are elderly, the purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the surface gloss (with a micro-area gloss meter) of, surface roughness (with a compact surface roughness measuring instrument) of, and color change (with a dental colorimeter) in two commercially available injectable resin-based composites (Estelite Universal Flow (EUF) and Beautifil Flow Plus F00 (BFP)) as well as two glass-ionomer cements (GC Fuji II LC CAPSULE (FLC) and GC Fuji IX GP EXTRA CAPSULE (FGP)), before and after dental prophylaxis. After 24 h, the surfaces of each specimen were polished at 2500 rpm with a prophy brush (Mersage Brush, Shofu) and one-step prophylaxis paste (Prophy Paste Pro, Directa): under 100 or 300 gf load, and for 10 or 30 s, 4× cycles of cleaning. After mechanical cleaning, conditions were found for a significant reduction in the gloss level (EUF, BFP, or FLC; p < 0.05) and a significant increase in surface roughness (BFP; 300 gf load, 10 s × four cycles of cleaning). Overall, the longer time or higher prophylaxis load tended to decrease the surface gloss. However, the observed change in surface roughness varied between the restorative materials. There was no color change post-prophylaxis.

Abstract
To assess skin color change in alligators, we maintained animals in differently lighted environments and also measured skin colors in an ontogenetic series of wild animals. Juvenile alligators maintained in black enclosures exhibited a gradual lightening of skin color when shifted to white enclosures, and these observed changes were reversible. A histological examination of the skins of alligators maintained in dark tanks showed that the dermis exhibited a dense layer of pigmented cells, while samples from the same animals in light environments exhibited a more diffuse pigmented layer. As alligators grow, they exhibit an ontogenetic loss of stripes that may aid in crypsis and predation. Hatchlings have intense black and yellow vertical stripes that darken with age; adults are a more homogenous black/gray color. Since alligators live in temperate climates and adults have lower surface area/volume ratios, which can be detrimental for the absorption of radiant energy, the darker color of larger animals may also aid in thermoregulation. Alligators at the northern end of their range, with colder climates, exhibited darker skin tones, and the ontogenetic extinction of stripes occurred at a more accelerated rate compared to animals in southern, warmer regions, supporting the idea that latitude-dependent ontogenetic color shift has a role in thermoregulation.

In this in vitro experimental study, a total of 96 disc-shaped specimens were fabricated from microfilled (Renamel Microfill, shade SB3) and nanohybrid (Estelite Sigma Quick, shade BW) composite resins in bright white shades (n = 48). Each group was randomized into 1 control and 2 experimental subgroups (n = 16): no polishing (control), polishing with aluminum oxide discs (experimental), or polishing with diamond-impregnated spiral wheels (experimental). In each subgroup, half of the specimens were immersed in a coffee solution and the other half in a tea solution for 48 hours after finishing (control) or polishing (experimental). Spectrophotometry was used to measure the color of the specimens at baseline, after finishing, after polishing (experimental groups only), and after immersion in tea and coffee. The surface micromorphology of a randomly selected specimen from each subgroup was assessed under SEM. The color change (ΔE*) of the specimens between measurements was calculated and analyzed using 1-way, 2-way, and 3-way analyses of variance (ANOVAs) and the Tukey test. Both tea and coffee caused significant color change in the composite resin specimens, with specimens immersed in coffee undergoing significantly greater color change than those immersed in tea (P < 0.001; 2-way ANOVA). The nanohybrid composite specimens polished with polishing discs had a significantly greater color change than nanohybrid specimens polished with spiral wheels (P = 0.041). The Tukey test revealed that there was no overall significant difference between the 2 polishing techniques (P = 0.505), but both of these subgroups exhibited a significantly lower color change than the control group (P < 0.001). In general, SEM did not reveal substantial differences between the 2 polishing techniques, but specimens polished by spiral wheels appeared to have a smoother surface. All polished specimens demonstrated clinically acceptable mean color change values (ΔE* < 3.5). The type of coloring agent had a greater effect on color stability than either the polishing technique or type of composite resin, with coffee causing a greater color change than tea.

Abstract
The limited service life of craniofacial prostheses due to degradation and color instability is a significant challenge. This in vitro study aimed to determine how zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanoparticles affect the color stability of M511 heat temperature vulcanizing (HTV) maxillofacial silicone elastomers after artificial aging. ZrO2 nanoparticles were added at concentrations of 1, 2, and 3 wt% to M511 HTV silicone elastomer. Two intrinsic silicone pigments were used (red and mocha). Silicone with pigment and without ZrO2 nanoparticles were used as the control. Eighty disk-shaped specimens were fabricated and divided into eight experimental groups, each containing ten specimens (n = 10). All specimens were subjected to artificial aging, and color changes were recorded at 252, 504, and 1008 h intervals. The L*a *b * values were measured using a colorimeter and the CIE-Lab system. To interpret the recorded color differences, a 50:50 percent perceptibility threshold (ΔE* = 1.1) and acceptability threshold (ΔE* = 3.0) were implemented. A one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc test at a significance level of 0.05 were used for the statistical analysis. We found that every evaluated specimen group exhibited a chromatic change (ΔE* > 0). The ΔE* values for the mocha pigments with and without ZrO2 nanoparticles were below the perceptible threshold (1.1 units). The ΔE* values of the red pigment with and without ZrO2 nanoparticles were significantly higher than the acceptable threshold (P < 0.000). According to the findings of this in vitro study, all the specimens underwent color changes (ΔE* > 0). The red pigment exhibited highly significant chromatic alterations. In contrast, mocha pigments with and without ZrO2 nanoparticles exhibited the least color change and were below the perceptible threshold. ZrO2 nanoparticles provided important protection and showed a reduction in color change.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the impact of three different chemical denture cleansers (CDCs) (Corega, chlorhexidine, and hydrogen peroxide) on the surface roughness, microhardness, and color stability of 3D-printed, computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) milled, and heat-polymerized denture base material (DBM). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 420 disc-shaped specimens (10 ± 0.1 × 2 ±0.1 mm) were fabricated using three different construction techniques: three-dimensional (3D) printing (n = 140), CAD-CAM milling (n = 140), and heat-polymerization (n = 140). Sixty specimens (20 of each DBM) were used for baseline (pre-immersion) measurements (T1 ) for the tested surface properties (hardness [n = 10/material] and roughness [n = 10/material]). The remaining 360 specimens (n = 120/material) were investigated for surface roughness, microhardness, and color change after immersion for 1 year (T2 ) in distilled water or CDCs (n = 30/solution and n = 10/test). The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA, one-way ANOVA followed by post-hoc Tukey's test at a significance level of less than 0.05. RESULTS Significant differences were observed in the effects of the tested CDCs on the surface roughness, micro-hardness, and color stability of varying DBM specimens (p < 0.05). Corega showed the highest surface roughness and color change in all DBMs while H2 O2 resulted in the lowest microhardness for all DBMs. The lowest changes in all tested properties were seen with distilled water followed by chlorhexidine. A significant effect of type of cleanser, denture base material, and the interaction between the two was seen on all measured properties (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The tested CDCs significantly affected the surface properties of all DBMs but at varying degrees. Corega produced the highest negative effect on roughness and color change while H2 O2 dramatically affected the microhardness. Prolonged use of CDCs should be cautiously followed.

Abstract
Freshness is one of the main factors affecting consumers' purchase of food. The freshness indicator labels of packaged fresh green bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) and greengrocery (Brassica chinensis L.) were constructed, and pH-sensitive indicator labels based on the dye of anthocyanin and the mixing dye of methyl red and bromothymol blue were prepared in this study. At the same time, the color, chlorophyll content and vitamin C content of vegetables were measured in order to explore the applicability of indicator labels in the cool chain transportation of vegetables. Compared with the nature dye, the chemical dye-type indicator labels are more sensitive to pH changes. The results showed that the mixed indicator intelligent label had the best indication effect, and the MB 2 (mixing 1 g/L methyl red and bromothymol blue solutions at a ratio of 3:2 with a concentration of 70 mL/L in indicator film solution) indicator label could effectively indicate the freshness changes in vegetables during storage. Meanwhile, the color changes of the MB 2-type indicator label were correlated with the colors change of the sample, changes in nutrients, and changes in CO2 content inside the packaging. In addition, freshness detection models for green bell pepper and greengrocery by using color information of MB 2 intelligent labels were established. Hence, this pH-sensitive label can be applied as a promising intelligent packaging for non-destructively monitoring the freshness of respiratory and non-respiratory climacteric vegetables.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of polishing and denture cleansers on the surface roughness (Ra ) of new-generation denture base materials that are additively, subtractively, and conventionally fabricated, while also assessing their color change after cleansing. MATERIAL AND METHODS One hundred and fifty disk-shaped specimens (Ø10 × 2 mm) were prepared from five denture base materials (one subtractively manufactured nanographene-reinforced prepolymerized polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) (SM-GC), one subtractively manufactured prepolymerized PMMA (SM-PM), two additively manufactured denture base resins (AM-DT and AM-ND), and one heat-polymerized PMMA (CV) (n = 30). The Ra of the specimens was measured before and after conventional laboratory polishing, while color coordinates were measured after polishing. Specimens were then divided into three subgroups based on the denture cleanser: distilled water, 1% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), and effervescent tablet (n = 10). The Ra and color coordinates were remeasured after nine cleansing cycles over a period of 20 days. The CIEDE2000 formula was used to calculate the color differences (ΔE00 ). Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the Ra values before (n = 30) and after (n = 10) cleansing, while repeated measures ANOVA was used to analyze the Ra of material-time point pairs within each denture cleanser (n = 10). ΔE00 data after denture cleansing was also analyzed by using two-way ANOVA (n = 10) (α = 0.05). RESULTS Before polishing, Ra varied significantly among the materials. SM-GC and SM-PM had the lowest and AM-ND the highest Ra values (P < 0.001). Polishing significantly reduced Ra of all materials (P < 0.001), and after polishing, Ra differences among materials were nonsignificant (P ≥ 0.072). Regardless of the denture cleanser, the Ra of AM-DT, AM-ND, and CV was the highest before polishing when different time points were considered (P < 0.001). After cleansing, AM-ND had the highest Ra of all the materials, regardless of the cleanser (P ≤ 0.017). AM-DT had higher Ra than SM-PM when distilled water (P = 0.040) and higher Ra than SM-GC, SM-PM, and CV when NaOCl was used (P < 0.001). The type of cleanser significantly influenced the Ra of AM-DT, AM-ND, and CV. For AM-DT, NaOCl led to the highest Ra and the tablet led to the lowest Ra (P ≤ 0.042), while for AM-ND, distilled water led to the lowest Ra (P ≤ 0.024). For CV, the tablet led to lower Ra than distilled water (P = 0.009). Color change varied among the materials. When distilled water was used, SM-GC had higher ΔE00 than SM-PM and AM-DT (P ≤ 0.034). When NaOCl was used, AM-ND had higher ΔE00 than SM-GC, SM-PM, and AM-DT, while CV and SM-GC had higher ΔE00 than SM-PM and AM-DT (P ≤ 0.039). Finally, when the tablet was used, AM-ND and CV had the highest ΔE00 , while AM-DT had lower ΔE00 than SM-GC (P ≤ 0.015). CONCLUSIONS The tested materials had unacceptable surface roughness (>0.2 μm) before polishing. Roughness decreased significantly after polishing (<0.2 μm). Denture cleansers did not significantly affect the surface roughness of the materials, and roughness remained clinically acceptable after cleansing (<0.2 μm). Considering previously reported color thresholds, AM-ND and CV had unacceptable color change regardless of the denture cleanser, and the effervescent tablet led to perceptible, but acceptable color change for SM-GC, SM-PM, and AM-DT.

Abstract
Hibiscus sabdariffa is a tropical plant with red calyxes whose anthocyanins, phenols, and antioxidant activity make it attractive to consumers both from a nutritional and medicinal standpoint. Its seasonality, perishability, and anthocyanin instability, led to the setup of stabilization methods comprising drying and powdering. However, its properties can often be altered during these stabilization processes. Treatments such as dehumidified-air-drying, infrared drying, and oven-drying, and their combination showed better quality preservation. Moreover, powder production enables superior biomolecule extractability which can be linked to a higher bioaccessibility. However, the required temperatures for powder production increase the bioactive molecules degradation leading to their antioxidant activity loss. To overcome this issue, ambient or cryogenic grinding could be an excellent method to improve the biomolecule bioavailability and accessibility if the processing steps are well mastered. To be sure to benefit from the final nutritional quality of the powder, such as the antioxidant activity of biomolecules, powders have to offer excellent reconstitutability which is linked to powder physicochemical properties and the reconstitution media. Typically, the finest powder granulometry and using an agitated low-temperature reconstitution media allow for improving anthocyanin extractability and stability. In this review, the relevant physicochemical and processing parameters influencing plant powder features from processing transformation to reconstitution will be presented with a focus on bioactive molecules and antioxidant activity preservation.

Abstract
In 1935, the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden began to produce the so-called Transparent Figures, which became icons of the 20th century. This study aims to explore the effects of external agents such as humidity and temperature on the aging mechanism of the materials of the Transparent Figures and to slow it down through preventive measures. The focus is on cellulose acetate (CA), which was used for the outer skin of the Transparent Figures. The original objects were investigated using FTIR, Raman, and GC-MS. On some Transparent Figures, liquid leakage of additives occurs when the relative humidity rises above 50-60% RH and is accompanied by a release of acetic acid. Based on these findings, original CA used for the production of the Transparent Figures was artificially re-aged at 70 °C while varying the relative humidity. The specimens were analyzed with colorimetry and GC-MS. Additive content, degree of substitution and degree of polymerization were determined. The results showed that the degradation is slowed down at 30% RH compared to aging at 50% RH or 70% RH. Thus, lowering the relative humidity seems effective in slowing down the degradation of the CA of the Transparent Figures. A relative humidity of 30% RH and a temperature of 15 °C are recommended.

Abstract
The feasibility of using microwaves to quickly stimulate automatic color change in 3D-printed food containing curcumin or anthocyanins was studied. Firstly, with a dual-nozzle 3D printer, stacked structures included mashed potatoes (MPs, upper part, containing anthocyanins) and lemon juice-starch gel (LJSG, lower part) were 3D-printed and post-treated using a microwave. The results indicated that the viscosity and gel strength (indicated by the elastic modulus (G') and complex modulus (G*)) of LJSG were improved with the increase in starch concentration, while water mobility was reduced. During microwave post-treatment, the color change speed was negatively correlated with the gel strength but positively correlated with the diffusion of H+ and anthocyanin concentration. Secondly, nested structures were 3D-printed using MPs containing curcumin emulsion and baking soda (NaHCO3). During microwave post-treatment, the curcumin emulsion structure was destroyed, and NaHCO3 was decomposed, along with an increase in alkalinity; thus, the automatic color change was achieved with the automated presentation of hidden information. This study suggests that 4D printing could enable the creation of colorful and attractive food structures using a household microwave oven, leading to more imaginative solutions regarding personalized foods, which may be particularly important to people with poor appetites.

Abstract
Introduction To investigate the mechanism of leaf color change at different stages in Populus × euramericana 'Zhonghuahongye' ('Zhonghong' poplar). Methods Leaf color phenotypes were determined and a metabolomic analysis was performed on leaves at three stages (R1, R2 and R3). Results The a*, C* and chromatic light values of the leaves decreased by 108.91%, 52.08% and 113.34%, while the brightness L values and chromatic b* values gradually increased by 36.01% and 13.94%, respectively. In the differential metabolite assay, 81 differentially expressed metabolites were detected in the R1 vs. R3 comparison, 45 were detected in the R1 vs. R2 comparison, and 75 were detected in the R2 vs. R3 comparison. Ten metabolites showed significant differences in all comparisons, which were mostly flavonoid metabolites. The metabolites that were upregulated in the three periods were cyanidin 3,5-O-diglucoside, delphinidin, and gallocatechin, with flavonoid metabolites accounting for the largest proportion and malvidin 3- O-galactoside as the primary downregulated metabolite. The color shift of red leaves from a bright purplish red to a brownish green was associated with the downregulation of malvidin 3-O-glucoside, cyanidin, naringenin, and dihydromyricetin. Discussion Here, we analyzed the expression of flavonoid metabolites in the leaves of 'Zhonghong' poplar at three stages and identified key metabolites closely related to leaf color change, providing an important genetic basis for the genetic improvement of this cultivar.

Abstract
Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are useful nanomaterials as transducers for colorimetric sensors because of their high extinction coefficient and ability to change color depending on aggregation status. Therefore, over the past few decades, AuNP-based colorimetric sensors have been widely applied in several environmental and biological applications, including the detection of water pollutants. According to various studies, water pollutants are classified into heavy metals or cationic metal ions, toxins, and pesticides. Notably, many researchers have been interested in AuNP that detect water pollutants with high sensitivity and selectivity, while offering no adverse environmental issues in terms of AuNP use. This review provides a representative overview of AuNP-based colorimetric sensors for detecting several water pollutants. In particular, we emphasize the advantages of AuNP as colorimetric transducers for water pollutant detection in terms of their low toxicity, high stability, facile processability, and unique optical properties. Next, we discuss the status quo and future prospects of AuNP-based colorimetric sensors for the detection of water pollutants. We believe that this review will promote research and development of AuNP as next-generation colorimetric transducers for water pollutant detection.

Abstract
Pressable ceramic restorations have been introduced and investigated, and found comparable to CAD/CAM ceramic in terms of mechanical properties; however, the effect of toothbrushing on the pressable ceramic has not been thoroughly investigated. The objective of the current study was to assess the effect of artificial toothbrushing simulation on the surface roughness, microhardness, and color stability of different ceramic materials. Three lithium disilicate-based ceramics (IPS Emax CAD [EC], IPS Emax Press [EP]; (Ivoclar Vivadent AG), and LiSi Press [LP] (GC Corp, Tokyo, Japan)) were examined. For each ceramic material, eight bar-shaped specimens were prepared and subjected to 10,000 brushing cycles. Surface roughness, microhardness, and color stability (∆E) were measured before and after brushing. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for surface profile analysis. The results were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, Tukey's post hoc test, and paired sample t-test α = 0.05. The findings revealed a non-significant decrease in the surface roughness of EC, EP, and LP groups (p > 0.05), and both LP and EP have the lowest surface roughness values (0.64 ± 0.13, 0.64 ± 0.08 µm) after brushing, respectively. Toothbrushing showed a decrease in the microhardness of the three groups: EC and LP, p < 0.001; EP, p = 0.012). EP showed the lowest hardness value after brushing (862.45 ± 273.83). No significant changes (∆E) were observed in all groups (p > 0.05); however, the EC group was found to be considerably affected by color changes, in comparison to the EC and LP groups. Toothbrushing had no effect on surface roughness and color stability of all tested materials, but it decreased the microhardness. Material type, surface treatments, and glazing of ceramic materials contributed to the surface changes in the ceramic materials, necessitating further investigations in terms of the toothbrushing effect with different glazing as variables.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate the effect of different experimental staining procedures on color stability and translucency of a nano-hybrid resin-based composite (RBC). METHODS Forty-eight cylindrical-shaped specimens (10 × 2 mm) were prepared with a nano-hybrid RBC (Clearfil Majesty ES-2) and randomly divided in four groups according to the experimental staining procedure: G1) static immersion in a staining solution (coffee) (44 ± 1 °C); G2) staining cycling between coffee (44 ± 1°C) and distilled water (37 ± 1°C) with an experimental staining machine based on Arduino, an Open Source hardware development platform; G3) staining cycles as in G2 + brushing with a low abrasive toothpaste (Relative Dentin Abrasion RDA = 30) (Elmex Sensitive Professional); G4) staining cycles as in G3, with brushing performed with a very strong abrasive toothpaste (RDA = 90) (Lacult Active). Color parameters were recorded at the baseline (T0) after staining procedures (T1) and repolishing (T2) using a spectrophotometer. Color change (∆E00) and translucency (TP, CR) were evaluated. Data were statistically analyzed (p < 0.05). RESULTS For ∆E00 after staining, Group 1 showed the highest color change and Group 3 the lowest. All groups were significantly different (p < 0.001) except for Group 2 vs. Group 4; after repolishing, Group 1 was significantly higher than Group 3 (p < 0.001), Group 2 (p < 0.001), and Group 4 (p = 0.003); Group 2 was higher than Group 3 (p < 0.001). For TP variable, after staining procedures, Group 2 was significantly higher than all other groups (p < 0.001), and Group 1 was significantly higher than Group 3 (p < 0.001) and Group 4 (p = 0.007). After repolishing, Group 4 was significantly lower than Group 3 (p = 0.008) and Group 2 (p = 0.027). Repolishing procedure significantly reduced color parameters. CONCLUSIONS The investigated staining procedure induced significant differences in color stability and translucency. The use of a very strong abrasive toothpaste (RDA = 90) induced higher color change than a low abrasive one (RDA = 30). Repolishing procedures are able to partially reduce color change induced by artificial staining procedures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To the effectiveness of different strategies to overcome silver diamine fluoride (SDF)-mediated tooth staining. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four online databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science) were searched using different MeSH terms and Boolean Operators to retrieve the articles (until June 2021), followed by a hand-search of the reference list of the included articles. All full-text, original studies in English that evaluated SDF staining and at least one SDF modification/alternative were included. RESULTS Among the assessed studies, nine studies explored the stain-minimization effect of potassium iodide (KI) post-application following SDF treatment. Among these, eight concluded that KI application after SDF treatment significantly reduced tooth staining, while one showed marginal staining following glass ionomer restoration of the SDF-treated dentine. Additionally, one study applied potassium fluoride (KF) and silver nitrate (AgNO3 ) concurrently to mitigate SDF-mediated staining. One study compared SDF staining with polyethylene glycol (PEG)-coated nanoparticles containing sodium fluoride (NaF), and another used nanosilver fluoride (NSF) for staining comparison with SDF. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this study, the addition of different materials to SDF has proven to be a beneficial strategy for overcoming tooth staining associated with SDF. Future studies are warranted, particularly clinical trials, to validate these findings. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE SDF-mediated tooth staining is a serious concern that limits its clinical use. A review of various strategies to overcome this problem will help clinicians enhance its clinical use and patient acceptance.

Abstract
This study investigates the relationships between the hydration kinetics of waterglass-activated slag and the development of its physical-mechanical properties, as well as its color change. To modify the calorimetric response of alkali-activated slag, hexylene glycol was selected from various alcohols for in-depth experiments. In presence of hexylene glycol, the formation of initial reaction products was restricted to the slag surface, which drastically slowed down the further consumption of dissolved species and slag dissolution and consequently delayed the bulk hydration of the waterglass-activated slag by several days. This allowed to show that the corresponding calorimetric peak is directly related to the rapid evolution of the microstructure and physical-mechanical parameters and to the onset of a blue/green color change recorded as a time-lapse video. Workability loss was correlated with the first half of the second calorimetric peak, while the most rapid increase in strengths and autogenous shrinkage was related to the third calorimetric peak. Ultrasonic pulse velocity increased considerably during both the second and third calorimetric peak. Despite the modified morphology of the initial reaction products, the prolonged induction period, and the slightly reduced degree of hydration induced by hexylene glycol, the overall mechanism of alkaline activation remained unchanged in the long-term perspective. It was hypothesized that the main issue of the use of organic admixtures in alkali-activated systems is the destabilizing effect of these admixtures on soluble silicates introduced into the system with an activator.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To conduct a scoping review on color stability of bulk-fill compared to conventional resin-based composites exposed to colored beverages. MATERIALS AND METHODS In vitro studies, investigating bulk-fill resin-based composites color stability submitted to artificial staining by colored beverages were included. Studies investigating color change induced by smoke and whitening treatments as well as papers not written in English language were excluded. A systematic search, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) was performed on four databases (Embase, Medline, Scopus, Web of Science) for articles published until October 01st 2022. The study selection was then performed by two authors who screened the abstracts independently and followed the JBI approach. RESULTS Of 717 screened abstracts, 59 were selected for full-text analysis. Finally, 19 studies were included in this review. They investigated 19 different bulk-fill composites and different artificial-staining-by-liquids-protocols including coffee, red wine, tea, coke, and others. Seven papers reported higher color change in the investigated bulk fill materials than in conventional resin-based composites, while nine studies reported the opposite. SonicFill showed the highest color stability for most of the papers. CONCLUSIONS The available evidence suggests that bulk-fill materials show variability in color stability. This behavior can be attributed to the heterogeneity of composition and staining procedures in the selected studies. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Clinicians should keep in mind that bulk-fill materials may change color when exposed to colorant drinks or food.

Abstract
To control the Maillard reaction of infant formula (IF) during secondary shelf-life (SSL) and establish an SSL prediction model, the effects of storage temperatures (25°C, 37°C) and relative humidity (RH) levels (32%, 57%, and 75%) on the Maillard reaction products (MRPs) were evaluated. Visible color changes were observed during storage in samples stored at 37°C and not at 25°C. The available lysine loss was the largest, up to 64.14% and 69.40% after 4 weeks of storage at 37°C and 57% RH. At the end of storage, the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, 3-deoxyglucuronide, fluorescence of advanced Maillard products and soluble Tryptophan (FAST) index, and Nε -carboxymethyllysine (CML) of two commercial IFs increased by 0.48-3.32, 1.26-12.65, 0.01-4.87, and 0.30-1.05 times, respectively. During storage, the glyoxal content in two commercial IFs tended to increase and then decrease in the range of 0.21-3.43 mg/100 g. The SSL of IFs was predicted using the multivariate accelerated shelf-life test and the Arrhenius model. At 25°C, the estimated SLL of two commercial IFs were 10-9 and 7-6 weeks at 57% and 75% RH, respectively. MRPs and ΔE* could be used as indicators for predicting the SLL of infant formula. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The results of the study suggested that the increase in storage temperature and humidity during the SSL can promote the MR of IF, which affects the sensory and safety of IF. Therefore, consumers need to focus on controlling storage conditions during the SSL to avoid degradation of IF quality.

Abstract
Saffron floral bio-residues (SFB) are a valuable natural source of antioxidants and dyes that can contribute to the development of new food products and cosmetic products. Color change was usually observed during SFB storage, which may result in quality degradation of SFB or even cause potential hazard to human health. In order to clarify the mechanism of color change of SFB sample, the chemical differences among SFB samples stored under different conditions were analyzed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry and chemometrics methods, from which differential flavonols and anthocyanins were screened and their kinetic variations during sample storage summarized. In addition, the color change of the SFB sample was digitalized using an electronic eye (E-eye), which was found to be related to the content of delphinidin-3,5-di-O-glucoside (DDG). Moreover, the degradation kinetic parameters of DDG under different storage conditions were studied. In conclusion, the variation of kaempferol-, isorhamnetin-, and quercetin-type flavonol, and delphinidin- and petunidin-type anthocyanin resulted in the color change of SFB sample, and anthocyanin was found more unstable than flavonol. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Saffron floral bio-residues (SFB) are popular natural sources of antioxidants and colorants that can be used in food and cosmetic products. Color change usually occurs during SFB storage period. Clarifying the mechanism of the color change of SFB will help us to ensure the quality of SFB.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This systematic review aims to evaluate the color stability of resin composite CAD/CAM blocks (CCB) when submitted to staining solutions. METHODS A systematic search was performed on different databases (Embase, Medline, Scopus, Web of Science). Search terms were: 'polymer infiltrated', 'polymer-based', 'resin nanoceramic', 'resin ceramic', 'hybrid composite', 'hybrid ceramic', 'composite ceramic', 'resin infiltrated', 'CAD-CAM', 'CAD/CAM', 'color stability', 'staining', 'staining susceptibility', 'color change', 'color difference'. INCLUSION CRITERIA in vitro articles published in the English language until 18 September 2022 without initial time restriction evaluating the color stability of CCB when submitted to staining solutions. EXCLUSION CRITERIA studies investigating color change induced by smoke or whitening treatments; studies not including a clinical evaluation of the results using the thresholds for color perceptibility and acceptability. Risk of bias assessment using the QUIN tool. FINDINGS Out of the 378 initially retrieved articles, 19 were included in this review. They investigated 17 different CCBs and different artificial staining by liquid protocols, including coffee, red wine, tea, and cola. CCBs exceeded clinical acceptability thresholds for color shift in 18 out of 19 studies, with a significantly higher color stability than conventional hybrid resin-based composites (RBCs), and a significantly lower color stability than ceramic materials. The identified differences in CCBs in color stability can be attributed to the material's composition, but also to the heterogeneity of staining procedures. Interpretation and clinical implication: Clinicians should be aware that, although to a lower degree when compared to RBCs used in direct or indirect procedures, CCBs undergo color changes to a higher degree in comparison to ceramic materials.

Abstract
The Whilhelmy method of contact angle, wood thermal properties (TG/DTG), infrared spectroscopy, etc. was used to define the hydrophobicity of heat-treated beech and fir wood at increasing temperatures between 120 °C and 300 °C. By exposure to wet conditions during 1 week, the hydrophobic character obtained by the heat treatment remains constant heat-treated. Heat induced wood hydrophobation, was shown by CP MAS 13C NMR and MALDI ToF mass spectrometry to be mainly caused by furanic moieties produced from heat-induced hemicelluloses degradation. This is caused by the acid environment generated by the hydrolysis of the hemicelluloses acetyl groups. Furfural polymerizes to linear and branched oligomers and finally to water repellent, insoluble furanic resins. The water repellent, black colored, cross-linked polymerized furanic network is present throughout the heat-treated wood. Wood darkening as well as its water repellency due to increasing proportions of black colored furanic resins increase as a function of the increase with treating temperature, becoming particularly evident in the 200 to 300 °C treating temperature range.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Peeling of polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon)-coated esthetic arch wires results in rough surfaces that may cause plaque accumulation, and the exposed core material may not meet the esthetic expectations of patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in-vivo surface roughness, Streptococcus mutans colonization, and color stability of Teflon-coated arch wires from 3 different manufacturers. METHODS Surface roughness and color data of 0.016-inch and 0.016 × 0.022-inch Teflon-coated arch wires from 3 different manufacturers were recorded as they were received (T0) and after 28 days of clinical exposure (retrieved) (T1) using an atomic force microscope and a spectrophotometer. The amount of S. mutans was assessed in terms of colony-forming units on the as-received and retrieved wires. RESULTS The surface roughness increased significantly, and a clinically noticeable color change was observed in all groups after clinical use (P < .005). There was no statistically significant difference in the amount of S. mutans adhesion for most of the wires. No significant correlation was found between the amount of S. mutans adhesion and the surface roughness. CONCLUSION All the arch wires showed increased surface roughness and clinically noticeable color change. The surface roughness values were not found to be correlated with the amount of S. mutans adhesion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of anodized titanium abutments and zirconia substructure thickness on the color of zirconia substructure. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, an electrochemical anodization setup was prepared for titanium coloring. Commercial titanium, anodization-colored yellow and pink titanium, and zirconia were used as different abutment specimens. Thirty zirconia discs in 0.7, 0.9, and 1.1 mm thickness were prepared from zirconia blocks as zirconia substructure specimens (n = 10). Zirconia substructure specimens of different thicknesses were placed on abutment specimens of different colors and L*, a*, b* values were measured with a spectrophotometer device. Color difference (ΔE) was calculated according to the CIELab formula by comparing the L*, a*, and b* values obtained on the zirconia abutment with the L*, a*, and b* values obtained on the other abutments. Statistical analyzes were performed with two-way analysis of variance and Tukey Honestly Significant Difference (HSD)test (p < 0.05). RESULTS The increase in the thickness of the substructure resulted in a statistically significant difference on ΔE, L*, a*, and b* values (p < 0.001). The effect of abutment color had no significant effect on ΔE values. The highest ΔE value was 18.10 at zirconia substructure with 0.7 mm thickness when paired with pink-anodized titanium abutment specimens. CONCLUSION The thickness of zirconia substructure and the color of titanium abutments affect zirconia substructure color.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polymerization plays an important role in the optical and mechanical properties resin composite materials. AIM The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of different polymerization times on the color change, translucency parameter (TP), and surface hardness of resin composites after thermocycling. MATERIALS AND METHODS Microhybrid resin composite (Filtek Z250; used in the control group) and bulk-fill resin composites (Filtek One Bulk-Fill Restorative, Tetric EvoCeram Bulk-Fill, and Tetric N-Ceram Bulk-Fill) were used. Each bulk-fill composite was placed as a single layer. Polymerization of the bulk-fill composites in the first group was completed in 20 s, and that in the second group was completed in 40 s (n = 10). Filtek Z250's polymerization was completed with 2 mm (20 s) + 2 mm (20 s). The color change (ΔE00) and translucency parameter (TP00) were calculated using the CIEDE2000 formula. Before and after thermocycling, the TP and surface hardness values were measured. The data were analyzed using one- and two-way analysis of variance, paired-samples t-test, and Tukey's test (P < 0.05). RESULTS After thermocycling, the ΔE00 values of the resin composite samples were 1.66-2.56. Compared to the control group, the Filtek One Bulk-Fill 20 s group exhibited the lowest color change values. The Filtek Z250 group exhibited lower TP and significantly higher microhardness values than the other bulk-fill resin groups before and after thermocycling (P < 0.05). There were no observed differences in the Tetric N-Ceram and Tetric EvoCeram groups before and after thermocycling. CONCLUSION Under the conditions of 10,000 thermal cycles, different curing times did not affect the color change and hardness values of the bulk-fill materials. However, differences were observed among the composite materials. After thermocycling, the surface hardness and TP values decreased in all the resin composites. Depending on the material content, effective results can be obtained from the 20 s polymerization of bulk-fill resin composites.

Abstract
This study evaluated the efficacy of different cleaning methods with respect to changes in the color and light transmittance of both rough and smooth thermoformed, copolyester retainer specimens, after staining in different solutions. Four hundred copolyester sheets (Essix ACE) specimens were fabricated over molds with different surface textures, smooth and rough. The specimens were stained in four different solutions (n = 100 per solution) over 28 days; then, each of the four groups of 100 stained specimens was sub-divided into five groups of 20 specimens and subjected to a different destaining solution. The specimens were sub-divided with half subjected to an additional ultrasonic cleaning procedure. Light transmittance and color changes were analyzed using a spectrometer/integrating sphere assembly and a spectrophotometer. Mean difference comparisons were performed using appropriate statistical tests at p = 0.05. All five destaining solutions proved to be effective at removing coffee and tea stains. The surface roughness of the retainer material plays a significant role in the ability of cleaning solutions to remove stains, demonstrating a greater effect on cleaning rough specimens with respect to improvements in light transmittance and greater changes in color. Additionally, an ultrasonic cleaning unit generally enhanced the ability of all five solutions to clean the tea-stained specimens. However, the enhancements were only significant for light transmittance.

Abstract
Inspired by many living creatures with adjustment of shape and color in ever-changing environment, color changeable shape memory hydrogels are designed and expected to be potential candidates in the fields spanning from anti-counterfeiting to biomedical devices. However, they normally require complex synthesis, and more importantly, the cooling-induced shape recovery hydrogel is still rare and in its infancy so far. Herein, we have developed a unique color changeable shape memory hydrogel by simply incorporating polyvinyl alcohol and copper acetate into covalent polyacrylamide network. As core functional element, copper ions serve as reversible crosslinks after heating to achieve excellent cooling-triggered shape memory effect, color shifting and self-healing behavior, showing significant potential in diverse applications like grabbing, information encryption, and biomimetic designs. Abstract
Organic protective coatings are widely used to protect metal structures from corrosion but they are vulnerable to undetectable damage. Without timely detection and repair, it could lead to severe consequences. How to warn and heal damaged areas simultaneously and automatically has become a challenging problem. Herein, we report an intelligent protective coating with self-warning and self-healing functions. This strategy was achieved by embedding bifunctional nanofibers containing 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) in organic coatings. The nanofibers with Phen as a core and a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)─chitosan (CS) blend solution as a shell were synthesized by coaxial electrospinning. The PVA/CS@Phen nanofiber-embedded coating displayed self-healing and high contrast indication function of the damaged area on coatings. Prominent red could warn microdamage and macrosurface damage, which occurred rapidly and healed permanently. The intelligent coating exhibited high healing performance under artificial injury with self-warning characteristics, and the cure rate was about 98.4% without external intervention. In the healing process, free amino groups of CS in the shell of nanofibers enhanced the sustained release of Phen. This convenient, economical, and efficient strategy with cooperative functions of self-warning and self-healing delivers an effective solution for prolonging the service life of protective coatings. This multifunctional coating exhibits excellent potential in the field of marine engineering applications.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of brushing with regular or whitening dentifrices on the change in color and micromorphologic surface of ceramic orthodontic brackets subjected to coffee staining. Fifty ceramic brackets were subjected to cycles of coffee staining followed by brushing according to the following groups (n = 10): C, control (no brushing); DW, brushing with distilled water; CT, brushing with Colgate Total 12 Clean Mint (regular toothpaste); COW, brushing with Colgate Optic White (containing 1% hydrogen peroxide); and CUWA, brushing with Close-Up White Attraction (containing blue covarine). The color of the brackets was assessed using the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) L*a*b* system at 5 different timepoints: prior to staining (baseline) and after 1, 7, 14, and 21 days of staining and brushing cycles. The surface micromorphology of the brackets was assessed at the baseline timepoint and after 21 days. Kruskal-Wallis, Dunn, Friedman, and Nemenyi tests were applied (α = 0.05) for the statistical analysis. The C group demonstrated a significant reduction in L* and a significant increase in a* and b* values over time. For the DW group, the L* value was reduced but was higher than in the C group, and there were also significant increases in a* and b* from baseline values. A significant increase in the a* and b* values was observed in all groups (P < 0.05). Total color change (∆E*) increased over the period of evaluation for all whitening groups, although only the CT group presented significantly lower ∆E* than the other dentifrices. At the end of the test period, only the COW group exhibited a surface with higher porosity. None of the dentifrices prevented the brackets from staining, but they did reduce the magnitude of color change caused by coffee. The most significant difference was found in the CT group. Micromorphologic surface changes were observed when COW was employed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the impact of desensitizing toothpastes (D), their whitening versions (DW) and whitening toothpastes (W) on tooth color change. METHODS Tooth specimens were allocated into 11 groups (n = 10): 1. Artificial saliva (control); 2. Sensodyne Repair & Protect (SRP-D); 3. Sensodyne Repair & Protect Whitening (SRP-DW); 4. Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief (CSPR-D); 5. Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief Real White (CSPR-DW); 6. Colgate Total 12 (CT12); 7. Colgate Total 12 Whitening (CT12-W); 8. Sensodyne True White (ST-W); 9. Curaprox Black Is White (CB-W); 10.Oral-B 3D White Perfection (OB3D-W) and 11. Erosion-only. They were submitted to two models: A. abrasion; B. erosion/abrasion. Color change (ΔE00 ), ΔL, Δa, and Δb were determined with a spectrophotometer. Data were statistically evaluated (α = 0.05). RESULTS For both models, ∆E00 of D did not differ significantly from DW. An overall decrease in luminosity (-∆L) and increase (+∆b) in yellowness of the tooth occurred. In abrasion, all groups reduced redness (-∆a) and only SRP-DW differed from control (p = 0.016), but for ∆E00 , ∆L and ∆b, all toothpastes did not differ from the control. In erosion/abrasion, CB-W showed significantly lower ∆E00 and ∆b than the control (∆E00 : p = 0.026; ∆b: p = 0.005) and SRP-D (∆E00 : p = 0.028; ∆b: p = 0.025). Only SRP-DW, CSPR-DW, ST-W, CB-W, and erosion-only had increased redness (+∆a), but none differed from control. CONCLUSIONS The toothpastes did neither promote whitening nor avoid the yellowish aspect of the tooth after abrasion and erosion-abrasion, regardless of their claim. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Desensitizing and/or whitening toothpastes induced similar changes on tooth color, without promoting whitening effect or reduction in its yellowish aspect.

Abstract
Hickory (Carya cathayensis Sarg.) is a monoecious plant of the genus Carya of the Juglandaceae family. Its nuts contain a number of nutritional compounds and are deeply loved by consumers. Interestingly, it was observed that the color of hickory stigma changed obviously from blooming to mature. However, the molecular mechanism underlying color formation during stigma development and the biological significance of this phenomenon was mostly unknown. In this work, pigment content, reactive oxygen species (ROS) removal capacity, and transcriptome analysis of developing stigma of hickory at 4 differential sampling time points (S1, S2, S3, and S4) were performed to reveal the dynamic changes of related pigment, antioxidant capacity, and its internal molecular regulatory mechanism. It was found that total chlorophyll content was decreased slightly from S1 to S4, while total carotenoids content was increased from S1 to S3 but decreased gradually from S3 to S4. Total anthocyanin content continued to increase during the four periods of stigma development, reaching the highest level at the S4. Similarly, the antioxidant capacity of stigma was also gradually improved from S1 to S4. Furthermore, transcriptome analysis of developing hickory stigma identified 31,027 genes. Time-series analysis of gene expressions showed that these genes were divided into 12 clusters. Cluster 5 was enriched with some genes responsible for porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism, carotenoid metabolism, and photosynthesis. Meanwhile, cluster 10 was enriched with genes related to flavonoid metabolism, including anthocyanin involved in ROS scavenging, and its related genes were mainly distributed in cluster 12. Based on the selected threshold values, a total of 10432 differentially expressed genes were screened out and enriched in the chlorophyll, carotenoid, anthocyanin, and ROS metabolism. The expression trends of these genes provided plausible explanations for the dynamic change of color and ROS level of hickory stigma with development. qRT-PCR analyses were basically consistent with the results of RNA-seq. The gene co-regulatory networks of pigment and ROS metabolism were further constructed and MYB113 (CCA0887S0030) and WRKY75 (CCA0573S0068) were predicted to be two core transcriptional regulators. These results provided in-depth evidence for revealing the molecular mechanism of color formation in hickory stigma and its biological significance.

Abstract
The leopard coral trout generally exhibited numerous round, minute blue spots covering its head (about the size of nostril) and body (except ventral side). This is a characteristic that distinguishes them from similar species. Recently, however, we found the leopard coral trout with black spots. Here, the distribution and ultrastructure of chromatophores in the blue and black spots were investigated with light and transmission electron microscopies. The results showed that in the blue spots, two types of chromatophores are present in the dermis, with the light-reflecting iridophores located in the upper layer and the aggregated light-absorbing melanophores in the lower layer. Black spots have a similar chromatophore composition, except that the melanosomes within the melanophores disperse their dendritic processes to encircle the iridophores. Interestingly, after the treatment of forskolin, a potent adenylate cyclase activator, the blue spots on the body surface turned black. On the other hand, using the skin preparations in vitro, the electrical stimulation and norepinephrine treatment returned the spots to blue color again, indicating the sympathetic nerves were involved in regulating the coloration of blue spots. Taken together, our results revealed that the blue spots of the leopard coral trout can change color to black and vice versa, resulting from the differences in the distribution of melanosomes, which enriches our understanding of the body color and color changes of fishes.

Abstract
In this paper, the effects of organic based stabilizers (OBS) are investigated and compared with traditional lead (Pb) and calcium zinc (CaZn) heat stabilizers regarding their processability, mechanical property, and thermal degradation behaviors in rigid PVC pipe applications. In addition, the effects of repeated processing cycles on the degree of gelation and the impact strength of the PVC/OBS, PVC/CaZn, and PVC/Pb are also examined. A repeated processing cycle of those three types of the heat stabilizers up to four cycles was found to increase the degree of gelation and proved no significant effect on the impact strength and heat resistance of the resulting PVC samples. The OBS showed a positive effect on preventing the autocatalytic-typed thermal degradation of the PVC samples. This leads to a longer retention time for the initial color change of the PVC/OBS compared to PVC/Pb or PVC/CaZn systems. This characteristic was related to a more uniform fusion behavior of the PVC/OBS, i.e., the lowest gelation speed and the longest fusion time. The non-isothermal kinetic parameter determined by the Kissinger and Flynn–Wall–Ozawa methods of the dehydrochlorination stage of the PVC/OBS was in satisfactory agreement and continued to compare with the PVC/Pb and PVC/CaZn systems. The results indicated that the OBS might decrease the dehydrochlorination rate of PVC, implying that PVC/OBS was more stable than PVC/Pb and PVC/CaZn systems.

Abstract
Underwater adhesives with efficient, selective, and repeatable adhesion are urgently needed for biomedical applications. Catechol-containing hydrogel adhesives have aroused much interest, but the design of specific underwater adhesives to biotic surfaces is still a challenge. Here we report a facile way that recapitulates the adhesion mechanism of mussel and sea gooseberry for the development of robust and specific hydrogel adhesives. With an exquisite design of chemical bonding, catechol chemistry, and electrostatic interaction, the hydrogel consisting of poly(acrylic acid) grafted with N-hydroxysuccinimide ester (PAA-NHS ester), tea polyphenol (TP), chitosan (CS), and Al3+ exhibited fast, specific, and repeatable underwater adhesion to various biological tissues, such as porcine skin, intestine, liver, and shrimp. Furthermore, nanofibers-hydrogel composite (NF-HG) was prepared via the wicking effect of curcumin-loaded electrospun nanofibers. The NF-HG exhibited pH-responsive color changing properties, sustained drug release, and good cell viability, which made it suitable as a novel wound healing material. This strategy may provide great inspiration for designing multifunctional specific underwater adhesives.

Abstract
There is a constant search for bleaching treatments that can offer greater safety with fewer adverse effects, especially in the techniques performed in the office, which usually employ hydrogen peroxide in high concentrations (35% to 40%) that are not recommended by some international control agencies. This in vitro study evaluated the color change after tooth bleaching with the use of ozone and a 10% ozonized carbamide peroxide bleaching treatment for in-office use. Thirty molars were allocated (n = 10): three applications of ozone (1 hour every 3 days); three applications of 10% ozonized carbamide peroxide (1 hour every 3 days); 10% carbamide peroxide agent (8 hours a day for 7 days). The teeth were mounted on a plaster model to simulate the dental arch, and trays made of silicone were used for the application of the bleaching agents and to allow ozone to enter through. The ozone concentration used was 60 μg/mL, with an oxygen flow of 0.25 L/min. The values of color change showed no significant differences among treatments. The variations in the parameters over time, as well as the values of ΔEab, ΔE00, and WID, showed that there was no significant difference among the three treatments. The use of ozone and 10% ozonized carbamide peroxide for in-office use was effective for tooth bleaching with clinically perceptible and acceptable color alterations. The study was approved on September 10, 2019 by the São Leopoldo Mandic Ethics Research Committee (CAAE No. 17711719.4.0000.5374).

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surface roughness, microhardness, color change, and translucency of a newly marketed universal nanohybrid composite resin (CR) (G-aenial A'CHORD) comparing with four contemporary universal CRs including two nanofilled (Filtek and Estelite Asteria) and two nanohybrid CRs (Charisma Dimond and Neo Spectra ST HV in vitro). Sixty-five specimens (8.0 mm × 2.0 mm) were fabricated (n = 13, per group). After finishing and polishing, specimens were subjected to surface roughness and microhardness tests. Color and translucency of the specimens were evaluated at baseline and after darkening with coffee solution at day 1 and day 7. A representative specimen from each group was investigated under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data was analyzed statistically (p < .05). There were significant differences among the groups in terms of surface roughness, microhardness, color, and translucency. The surface roughness was recorded as: Charisma Diamond > Neo Spectra ST HV, Filtek > Estelite Asteria, G-aenial A'CHORD, whereas Vickers Hardness number was as: Filtek, Charisma Diamond > Neo Spectra ST HV > G-aenial A'CHORD, Estelite Asteria. Color change was as: Charisma Diamond > Neo Spectra ST HV, Filtek, G-aenial A'CHORD > Estelite Asteria and the translucency was as: Neo Spectra ST HV > G-aenial A'CHORD, Filtek > Estelite Asteria, Charisma Diamond. SEM examinations revealed smooth surfaces for G-aenial A'CHORD, Neo Spectra ST HV and Estelite Asteria. Mechanical and optical properties of universal composite resins with different compositions show variations.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the efficacy of different bleaching agents typically used for internal bleaching of endodontically treated discolored teeth. METHODS Electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) were searched by 2 reviewers for clinical trials in which the color of endodontically treated discolored teeth before and after internal bleaching was examined using shade guide units (ΔSGU) or a spectrophotometer/colorimeter (ΔE). The efficacies of the bleaching agents were compared using subgroup analyses. Statistical heterogeneity was assessed with the Cochran Q test and I2 statistic. Publication bias was evaluated using funnel plots. RESULTS Eight studies were included in the systematic review, 6 of which could be included in the meta-analyses. Internal bleaching led to a significant change in tooth shade (ΔSGU: 6.27 [95% confidence interval, 5.36-7.17], ΔE: 12.83 [95% confidence interval, 9.46-16.20]). With regard to ΔSGU, the use of carbamide peroxide (35% or 37%), hydrogen peroxide (35%), and the combination of sodium perborate and hydrogen peroxide (3% or 30%) led to a better bleaching effect than sodium perborate (adjusted P value ≤ .026). Regarding ΔE, there were no significant differences between carbamide peroxide (37%), hydrogen peroxide (35%), and sodium perborate mixed with hydrogen peroxide (P = .051). The risk of bias of the included studies was classified as moderate to high. CONCLUSIONS Carbamide peroxide, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium perborate have a significant bleaching effect on discolored, root canal-treated teeth. For a valid assessment of shade stability and a comparison of bleaching agents and their concentrations, further studies with long-term recalls are necessary.

Abstract
Color parameters were used in this study to develop a machine learning model for predicting the mechanical properties of artificially weathered fir, alder, oak, and poplar wood. A CIELAB color measuring system was employed to study the color changes in wood samples. The color parameters were fed into a decision tree model for predicting the MOE and MOR values of the wood samples. The results indicated a reduction in the mechanical properties of the samples, where fir and alder were the most and least degraded wood under weathering conditions, respectively. The mechanical degradation was correlated with the color change, where the most resistant wood to color change exhibited less reduction in the mechanical properties. The predictive machine learning model estimated the MOE and MOR values with a maximum R2 of 0.87 and 0.88, respectively. Thus, variations in the color parameters of wood can be considered informative features linked to the mechanical properties of small-sized and clear wood. Further research could study the effectiveness of the model when analyzing large-sized timber.

Abstract
The ability to detect fluoride anions with high selectivity and sensitivity by using the naked eye is crucial yet challenging. In this study, a novel, simple conjugated organic dye, N-tert-butyldimethylsilyl-3,6-diiodocarbazole (CA-TBMDS) was developed and used for the first time as a colorimetric sensor for fluoride. CA-TBMDS was found to be a highly sensitive fluoride chemosensor, with a detection limit as low as 3 × 10−5 M. The reaction of CA-TBMDS with fluoride anions in a tetrahydrofuran solution resulted in a color change from colorless to yellow under ambient light, which can be discriminated by the naked eye. The sensor operated via intermolecular proton transfer between the amide units and the fluoride anion, as confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance titration. CA-TBMDS is not only highly sensitive to fluoride anions, but also exhibits high sensitivity in the presence of various ions. This work demonstrates that N-butyldimethylchlorosilane-based organic dyes have prospective utility as a type of fluoride anion chemosensor.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of thickness, cement shade, and coffee thermocycling (CTC) on the optical properties of zirconia reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) paired with different shades of a resin cement. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty ZLS specimens were prepared in two different thicknesses (0.8 and 1.5 mm) and three different resin cement shades (Tr, A2, and A3) were applied (n = 5). Color determinations were done before and after 5000 CTC by using a noncontact spectroradiometer. Color change due to CTC and relative translucency parameter (RTP) before and after CTC were calculated by using CIEDE2000. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Bonferroni-corrected t-tests(α = 0.05). RESULTS Material thickness and resin cement shade (P < 0.001) affected baseline color. Material thickness affected color difference (P = 0.025). Thickness, resin cement shade, and CTC (P ≤ 0.0001) affected RTP. The difference between the color changes of the 0.8- and 1.5-mm specimens combined with A2 shade cement after CTC was significant (P = 0.01). RTPs of all pairs decreased after CTC (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Cement shade and material thickness affected the baseline color. The thickness of ZLS affected the color change after CTC only with A2 resin cement and the color change was less when the ZLS was thicker. CTC reduced the translucency of all pairs. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Clinicians and patients should be aware of a potential color change after long-term coffee consumption when zirconia reinforced lithium silicate is used particularly for laminate veneers with A2 shade of the tested resin cement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are studies that examined the effect of staining on the surface properties of composite resins, using different solutions and bleaching applications. However, the effect of both staining and bleaching on the same composite specimens is an issue that needs to be investigated. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the surface microhardness, roughness and color changes (ΔE) of 2 different composite resins after staining and bleaching. MATERIAL AND METHODS A microhybrid and a nanohybrid composite were used in the study. One hundred and fifty specimens were prepared from each composite. The specimens were divided into 5 groups and stained for 30 days with tea, coffee, cola, red wine, or distilled water (control). Subsequently, each group was divided into 3 subgroups. Each subgroup received a 14-day application of Opalescence™ Boost, Opalescence PF or VivaStyle® Paint On Plus bleaching materials. The color as well as surface microhardness and roughness of all specimens were determined at baseline, after staining and after bleaching. Data was analyzed using the repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Bonferroni method. RESULTS A statistically significant decrease was observed in the surface microhardness of the microhybrid composite specimens after bleaching (p < 0.05).The highest ΔE values were observed in the red wine groups for both composite resins. CONCLUSIONS Staining and bleaching may affect surface properties and color, depending on the type, filler and matrix content of the composite resin.

Abstract
In most cases, conventional drying produces inferior quality products and requires higher drying times. A continuous pilot Refractance Window® equipment was used to dry Aloe vera gel slabs of 5 and 10 mm thick at 60, 70, 80, and 90 °C, seeking a dry product with high-quality retention. Based on five empirical models, drying kinetics, diffusion coefficient, and activation energy were analyzed. Midilli–Kuck was the best predicting model. Short drying times (55–270 min) were needed to reach 0.10 g water/g solid. In addition, the technique yielded samples with high rehydration capacity (24–29 g water/g solid); high retention of color (∆E, 3.74–4.39); relatively low losses of vitamin C (37–59%) and vitamin E (28–37%). Regardless of the condition of temperature and sample thickness, a high-quality dried Aloe vera gel could be obtained. Compared with other methods, Refractance Window® drying of Aloe vera achieved shorter drying times with higher quality retention in terms of color, vitamins C and E, and rehydration. Finally, the dried Aloe vera gel could be reconstituted to a gel close to its fresh state by rehydration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the impact of the color of a resin composite cement (RCC) on the optical properties of different computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) ceramics. MATERIALS AND METHODS Specimens (N = 220, thickness: 0.9 ± 0.03 mm) were fabricated from: leucite (Initial LRF Block/IPS Empress CAD), lithium disilicate (Amber Mill/IPS e.max CAD), lithium metasilicate (Celtra Duo), and lithium alumina silicate ceramic (n!ce) in translucency levels HT and LT. All specimens were bonded with an RCC (Light+/Warm+). Color was analyzed (spectrophotometer) initially as well as after bonding of RCC with CAD/CAM ceramics using CIELab and CIEDE2000. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, one-way ANOVA and t test served for analyzing (α = 0.05). RESULTS Highest impact on ΔE presented the choice of ceramic (ηp 2 = 0.155/p < 0.001), followed by translucency level (HT/LT; ηp 2 = 0.050/p = 0.001) as well as interaction between ceramic and translucency level (ηp 2 = 0.175/p < 0.001). ΔE00 was mainly influenced by the choice of ceramic (ηp 2 = 0.490/p < 0.001), the shade of resin composite (ηp 2 = 0.031/p = 0.012) as well as the interaction between ceramic and resin composite (ηp 2 = 0.258/p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS RCC shades presented differential impacts on color change of CAD/CAM ceramics. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Knowledge of the impact of available RCC shades on different CAD/CAM ceramics is crucial for an esthetic outcome and proper selection of ceramic restorations.

Abstract
The goal of current research was to investigate the influence of adding low shrinkage “Phene” like comonomers hexaethylene glycol bis(carbamate-isoproply-α-methylstyrene) (HE-Phene) and triethylene glycol bis(carbamate-isoproply-α-methylstyrene) (TE-Phene) on the surface and color characteristics of composite resin. A range of weight fractions (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 wt.%) of HE/TE-Phene monomers were mixed with bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) monomer. Experimental composite resins were made by mixing 71 wt.% of silica fillers to 29 wt.% of the resin matrix. A Vickers indenter and glossmeter were used for testing surface hardness (SH) and gloss (SG) at 60°. A chewing-simulator was used to evaluate the surface wear after 15,000 cycles. Color change (∆E) and translucency parameter (TP) were measured using a spectrophotometer. Data showed that HE/TE-Phene monomer had no negative impact (p > 0.05) on surface gloss, wear, color change and translucency of experimental composite resins. Surface hardness was in a reducing direction with the increas in HE/TE-Phene weight fraction (p < 0.05). The study results suggested that incorporating HE/TE-Phene monomers up to 30 wt.% with Bis-GMA/TEGDMA resin did not negatively influence the surface integrity of composite resins except for SH.

Abstract
Today, it is common knowledge that environmental factors can change the color of many animals. Studies have shown that the molecular mechanisms underlying such modifications could involve epigenetic factors. Since 2013, the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera var. cumingii has become a biological model for questions on color expression and variation in Mollusca. A previous study reported color plasticity in response to water depth variation, specifically a general darkening of the nacre color at greater depth. However, the molecular mechanisms behind this plasticity are still unknown. In this paper, we investigate the possible implication of epigenetic factors controlling shell color variation through a depth variation experiment associated with a DNA methylation study performed at the whole genome level with a constant genetic background. Our results revealed six genes presenting differentially methylated CpGs in response to the environmental change, among which four are linked to pigmentation processes or regulations (GART, ABCC1, MAPKAP1, and GRL101), especially those leading to darker phenotypes. Interestingly, the genes perlucin and MGAT1, both involved in the biomineralization process (deposition of aragonite and calcite crystals), also showed differential methylation, suggesting that a possible difference in the physical/spatial organization of the crystals could cause darkening (iridescence or transparency modification of the biomineral). These findings are of great interest for the pearl production industry, since wholly black pearls and their opposite, the palest pearls, command a higher value on several markets. They also open the route of epigenetic improvement as a new means for pearl production improvement.
