Electrospun Nanofibers: Current Progress and Applications in Food Systems

Effects of quercetin- and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum-containing bioactive films on physicochemical properties and microbial safety of grass carp

In this study, the electrospinning technique was used to co-encapsulate Quercetin (Qu) and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 1-24-LJ in PVA-based nanofibers, and the effect of bioactive films on fish preservation was evaluated at the first time. The findings indicated that both Lpb. plantarum 1-24-LJ and Qu were successfully in the fibers, and co-loaded fibers considerably outperformed single-loaded fiber in terms of bacterial survival and antioxidant activity. Following fish preservation using the loaded fibers, significant reductions were observed in TVB-N, TBARS, and microbial complexity compared to the control group. Additionally, the co-loaded fibers more effectively reduced the counts of H2S-producing bacteria and Pseudomonas. In the future, fibers with both active substances and LAB hold promise as a novel approach for fish preservation.

Effects of bacterial cellulose/thyme essential oil emulsion coating on the shelf life of chilled chicken meat

BACKGROUND

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a fiber substance produced by microbial fermentation. It is widely used in the food preservation industry because of its extremely pure texture, high crystallinity and high biocompatibility. In the present study, bacterial cellulose/thyme essential oil (BC/TEO-E) with antibacterial and fresh-keeping functions was prepared by ultrasonic treatment of modified bacterial cellulose for encapsulation of thyme essential oil, which effectively inhibited the spoilage of chilled chicken.

RESULTS

The purified BC, produced by Acetobacter xylinum ATCC 53524, was ultrasonically treated wih different times (0, 30, 60 and 90 min). Transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and zeta potential were used to characterize the structure of BC after ultrasound, showing that BC, treated for 30 min, had the optimal fiber structure, crystallinity (85.8%), thermal stability (347.77 °C) and solution stability (-26.63 ± 1.96 mV). BC/TEO-E was prepared by a homogenizer for the preservation of chilled chicken. Optical microscopy indicated that the BC/TEO-E prepared by 0.5% BC had optimal dispersion and stability, and even no delamination was observed in the emulsion. Compared with other groups (control, 0.5% BC and Tween-E), the total number of colonies and coliforms in chilled chicken treated with 0.5% BC/TEO-E was the lowest during the whole storage period (12 days), indicating that it can effectively inhibit bacterial growth. In addition, total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, pH and drip loss results showed that 0.5% BC/TEO-E could effectively inhibit the spoilage of chilled chicken compared to the other treatment groups.

CONCLUSION

All of the results acquired in the present study indicate that BC/TEO-E has a potential application in chilled chicken preservation. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Electrospun Polymeric Nanofibers: Current Trends in Synthesis, Surface Modification, and Biomedical Applications

Electrospun polymeric nanofibers are essential in various fields for various applications because of their unique properties. Their features are similar to extracellular matrices, which suggests them for applications in healthcare fields, such as antimicrobials, tissue engineering, drug delivery, wound healing, bone regeneration, and biosensors. This review focuses on the synthesis of electrospun polymeric nanofibers, their surface modification, and their biomedical applications. Nanofibers can be fabricated from both natural and synthetic polymers and their composites. Even though they mimic extracellular matrices, their surface features (physicochemical characteristics) are not always capable of fulfilling the purpose of the target application. Therefore, they need to be improved via surface modification techniques. Both needle-based and needleless electrospinning are thoroughly discussed. Various techniques and setups employed in each method are also reviewed. Furthermore, pre- and postspinning modification approaches for electrospun nanofibers, including instrument design and the modification features for targeted biomedical applications, are also extensively discussed. In this way, the remarkable potential of electrospun polymeric nanofibers can be highlighted to reveal future research directions in this dynamic field.

Electrospun Fibers Loaded with Probiotics: Fundamentals, Characterization, and Applications

Increasing demand for safe, efficient, and eco-friendly solutions for pharmaceutical and food industries has led researchers to explore new approaches to bacterial storage. Several advantages make electrospinning (ES) a promising technique for food systems, including simple manufacturing equipment, a relatively low spinning cost, a wide variety of spinnable materials, and a mild process that is easily controlled, which allows continuous fabrication of ultrafine polymeric fibers at submicron or nanoscales without high temperatures or high pressures. This review briefly describes recent advances in the development of electrospun fibers for loading probiotics (PRB) by focusing on ES technology, its efficiency for loading PRB into fibers (viability, digestive stability, growth rate, release, thermal stability, and interactions of fibers with PRB), and the application of PRB-loaded fibers as active packaging (spoilage/microbial control, antioxidant effect, shelf life). Based on the literature reviewed, the incorporation of PRB into electrospun fibers is both feasible and functional. However, several studies have been limited to proof-of-principle experiments and the use of model biological products. It is necessary to conduct further research to establish the industrial applicability of PRB-loaded fibers, particularly in the fields of food and medicine.

Developmental Formulation Principles of Food Preservatives by Nanoencapsulation-Fundamentals, Application, and Challenges

The role of food additives is to preserve food by extending shelf life and limiting harmful microorganism proliferation. They prevent spoilage by enhancing the taste and safety of food by utilizing beneficial microorganisms and their antimicrobial metabolites. Current advances in food preservation and processing utilize green technology principles for green preservative formulation, enhancing nutrition and supplying essential micronutrients safely, while also improving quality, packaging, and food safety. Encapsulation is gaining attention for its potential to protect delicate materials from oxidative degradation and extend their shelf life, thereby ensuring optimal nutrient uptake. Nanoencapsulation of bioactive compounds has significantly improved the food, pharmaceutical, agriculture, and nutraceutical industries by protecting antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids by controlling release and ensuring delivery to specific sites in the human body. This emerging area is crucial for future industrial production, improving the sensory properties of foods like color, taste, and texture. Research on encapsulated bioactive compounds like bacteriocins, LAB, natamycin, polylysine, and bacteriophage is crucial for their potential antioxidant and antimicrobial activities in food applications and the food industry. This paper reviews nanomaterials used as food antimicrobial carriers, including nanoemulsions, nanoliposomes, nanoparticles, and nanofibers, to protect natural food antimicrobials from degradation and improve antimicrobial activity. This review discusses nanoencapsulation techniques for biopreservative agents like nisin, poly lysine, and natamycin, focusing on biologically-derived polymeric nanofibers, nanocarriers, nanoliposomes, and polymer-stabilized metallic nanoparticles. Nanomaterials, in general, improve the dispersibility, stability, and availability of bioactive substances, and this study discusses the controlled release of nanoencapsulated biopreservative agents.

Cyclodextrins and their potential applications for delivering vitamins, iron, and iodine for improving micronutrient status

Cyclodextrins (CDs) have been investigated as potential biopolymeric carriers that can form inclusion complexes with numerous bioactive ingredients. The inclusion of micronutrients (e.g. vitamins or minerals) into cyclodextrins can enhance their solubility and provide oxidative or thermal stability. It also enables the formulation of products with extended shelf-life. The designed delivery systems with CDs and their inclusion complexes including electrospun nanofibers, emulsions, liposomes, and hydrogels, show potential in enhancing the solubility and oxidative stability of micronutrients while enabling their controlled and sustained release in applications including food packaging, fortified foods and dietary supplements. Nano or micrometer-sized delivery systems capable of controlling burst release and permeation, or moderating skin hydration have been reported, which can facilitate the formulation of several personal and skin care products for topical or transdermal delivery of micronutrients. This review highlights recent developments in the application of CDs for the delivery of micronutrients, i.e. vitamins, iron, and iodine, which play key roles in the human body, emphasizing their existing and potential applications in the food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmeceuticals industries.

A Colorimetric Nanofiber Film Based on Ethyl Cellulose/Gelatin/Purple Sweet Potato Anthocyanins for Monitoring Pork Freshness

In this study, colorimetric indicator nanofiber films based on ethyl cellulose (EC)/gelatin (G) incorporating purple sweet potato anthocyanins (PSPAs) were designed via electrospinning technology for monitoring and maintaining the freshness of pork. The film presented good structural integrity and stability in a humid environment with water vapor permeability (WVP) of 6.07 ± 0.14 × 10-11 g·m-1s-1Pa-1 and water contact angle (WCA) of 81.62 ± 1.43°. When PSPAs were added into the nanofiber films, the antioxidant capacity was significantly improved (p < 0.05) with a DPPH radical scavenging rate of 68.61 ± 1.80%. The nanofiber films showed distinguishable color changes as pH changes and was highly sensitive to volatile ammonia than that of casting films. In the application test, the film color changed from light pink (fresh stage) to light brown (secondary freshness stage) and then to brownish green (spoilage stage), indicating that the nanofiber films can be used to detect the real-time freshness of pork during storage. Meanwhile, it could prolong the shelf life of pork by inhibiting the oxidation degree. Hence, these results suggested that the EC/G/PSPA film has promising future for monitoring freshness and extending shelf life of pork.

Electrospun plant protein-based nanofibers in food packaging

Electrospinning is a relatively simple technology capable to produce nano- and micron-scale fibers with different properties depending on the electrospinning conditions. This review critically investigates the fabrication of electrospun plant protein nanofibers (EPPNFs) that can be used in food and food packaging applications. Recent progress in the development and optimization of electrospinning techniques for production of EPPNFs is discussed. Finally, current challenges to the implementation of EPPNFs in food and food packaging applications are highlighted, including potential safety and scalability issues. The production of plant protein nanofibers and microfibers is likely to increase in the future as many industries wish to replace synthetic materials with more sustainable, renewable, and environmentally friendly biopolymers. It is therefore likely that EPPNFs will find increasing applications in various fields including active food packaging and drug delivery.

Synthesis and Fabrication of Betulin-Derived Polysulfide and Polysulfoxide Electrospun Fibers for Fruit Preservation

Plant-derived biocompounds play a crucial role in the field of renewable materials due to their sustainability as they can be converted into monomers for polymerization, comparable to numerous monomers obtained from petroleum. In this work, betulin, a triterpene derivative with antibacterial properties obtained from birch tree bark, was esterified to produce two varieties of α,ω-diene derivatives with different lengths of methylene spacers. These derivatives were then copolymerized with 2,2'-(ethylenedioxy)diethanethiol using thiol-ene photopolymerization. We optimized and confirmed the polymerization parameters such as solvents, catalysts, and monomer concentrations. These analyses allowed for the obtainment of polysulfides with a high molar mass of up to 38.9 kg/mol under the optimized conditions. Furthermore, the polysulfides were converted into polysulfoxides by using a dilute hydrogen peroxide solution. Thermal analysis of the obtained polymers revealed excellent thermal stability (up to 300 °C) and tunable glass transition temperatures depending on their molar mass and composition. We successfully produced fibers with a diameter of approximately 3.9 μm by using the electrospinning technique. The morphology and hydrophobicity of the fibers were analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy and water contact angle analysis. Plant-derived polymeric fibers exhibited good cellular biocompatibility and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, making them promising candidates for applications in fruit preservation.

How can Electrospinning Further Service Well for Pharmaceutical Researches?

The past two decades have witnessed the enormous success and progress of electrospinning, as well as its broad and useful applications in pharmaceutics as a laboratory pharmaceutical nanotechnology. Everything in the past is a preface, in which the large screen opens for electrospinning and electrospun nanofibers (particularly those multiple-fluid electrospinning processes and the related multiple-chamber nanostructures) to stride into a new stage and the real commercial applications. In this commentary, four hot regions are identified for the further progress of the applications of electrospinning in pharmaceutics, in which electrospinning and its products can provide more and better services to the development of pharmaceutics.

Electrosprayed Stearic-Acid-Coated Ethylcellulose Microparticles for an Improved Sustained Release of Anticancer Drug

Sustained release is highly desired for "efficacious, safe and convenient" drug delivery, particularly for those anticancer drug molecules with toxicity. In this study, a modified coaxial electrospraying process was developed to coat a hydrophobic lipid, i.e., stearic acid (SA), on composites composed of the anticancer drug tamoxifen citrate (TC) and insoluble polymeric matrix ethylcellulose (EC). Compared with the electrosprayed TC-EC composite microparticles M1, the electrosprayed SA-coated hybrid microparticles M2 were able to provide an improved TC sustained-release profile. The 30% and 90% loaded drug sustained-release time periods were extended to 3.21 h and 19.43 h for M2, respectively, which were significantly longer than those provided by M1 (0.88 h and 9.98 h, respectively). The morphology, inner structure, physical state, and compatibility of the components of the particles M1 and M2 were disclosed through SEM, TEM, XRD, and FTIR. Based on the analyses, the drug sustained-release mechanism of multiple factors co-acting for microparticles M2 is suggested, which include the reasonable selections and organizations of lipid and polymeric excipient, the blank SA shell drug loading, the regularly round shape, and also the high density. The reported protocols pioneered a brand-new manner for developing sustained drug delivery hybrids through a combination of insoluble cellulose gels and lipid using modified coaxial electrospraying.

Integrating Chinese Herbs and Western Medicine for New Wound Dressings through Handheld Electrospinning

In this nanotechnology era, nanostructures play a crucial role in the investigation of novel functional nanomaterials. Complex nanostructures and their corresponding fabrication techniques provide powerful tools for the development of high-performance functional materials. In this study, advanced micro-nanomanufacturing technologies and composite micro-nanostructures were applied to the development of a new type of pharmaceutical formulation, aiming to achieve rapid hemostasis, pain relief, and antimicrobial properties. Briefly, an approach combining a electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA) technique and reversed-phase solvent was employed to fabricate a novel beaded nanofiber structure (BNS), consisting of micrometer-sized particles distributed on a nanoscale fiber matrix. Firstly, Zein-loaded Yunnan Baiyao (YB) particles were prepared using the solution electrospraying process. Subsequently, these particles were suspended in a co-solvent solution containing ciprofloxacin (CIP) and hydrophilic polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and electrospun into hybrid structural microfibers using a handheld electrospinning device, forming the EHDA product E3. The fiber-beaded composite morphology of E3 was confirmed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed the amorphous state of CIP in the BNS membrane due to the good compatibility between CIP and PVP. The rapid dissolution experiment revealed that E3 exhibits fast disintegration properties and promotes the dissolution of CIP. Moreover, in vitro drug release study demonstrated the complete release of CIP within 1 min. Antibacterial assays showed a significant reduction in the number of adhered bacteria on the BNS, indicating excellent antibacterial performance. Compared with the traditional YB powders consisting of Chinese herbs, the BNS showed a series of advantages for potential wound dressing. These advantages include an improved antibacterial effect, a sustained release of active ingredients from YB, and a convenient wound covering application, which were resulted from the integration of Chinese herbs and Western medicine. This study provides valuable insights for the development of novel multiscale functional micro-/nano-composite materials and pioneers the developments of new types of medicines from the combination of herbal medicines and Western medicines.

Dual-Step Controlled Release of Berberine Hydrochloride from the Trans-Scale Hybrids of Nanofibers and Microparticles

In this nano era, nanomaterials and nanostructures are popular in developing novel functional materials. However, the combinations of materials at micro and macro scales can open new routes for developing novel trans-scale products with improved or even new functional performances. In this work, a brand-new hybrid, containing both nanofibers and microparticles, was fabricated using a sequential electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA) process. Firstly, the microparticles loaded with drug (berberine hydrochloride, BH) molecules in the cellulose acetate (CA) were fabricated using a solution electrospraying process. Later, these microparticles were suspended into a co-dissolved solution that contained BH and a hydrophilic polymer (polypyrrolidone, PVP) and were co-electrospun into the nanofiber/microparticle hybrids. The EHDA processes were recorded, and the resultant trans-scale products showed a typical hybrid topography, with microparticles distributed all over the nanofibers, which was demonstrated by SEM assessments. FTIR and XRD demonstrated that the components within the hybrids were presented in an amorphous state and had fine compatibility with each other. In vitro dissolution tests verified that the hybrids were able to provide the designed dual-step drug release profiles, a combination of the fast release step of BH from the hydrophilic PVP nanofibers through an erosion mechanism and the sustained release step of BH from the insoluble CA microparticles via a typical Fickian diffusion mechanism. The present protocols pave a new way for developing trans-scale functional materials.

The influence of the ultrasonic treatment of working fluids on electrospun amorphous solid dispersions

Based on a working fluid consisting of a poorly water-soluble drug and a pharmaceutical polymer in an organic solvent, electrospinning has been widely exploited to create a variety of amorphous solid dispersions However, there have been very few reports about how to prepare the working fluid in a reasonable manner. In this study, an investigation was conducted to determine the influences of ultrasonic fluid pretreatment on the quality of resultant ASDs fabricated from the working fluids. SEM results demonstrated that nanofiber-based amorphous solid dispersions from the treated fluids treated amorphous solid dispersions exhibited better quality than the traditional nanofibers from untreated fluids in the following aspects: 1) a straighter linear morphology; 2) a smooth surface; and 3) a more evener diameter distribution. The fabrication mechanism associated with the influences of ultrasonic treatments of working fluids on the resultant nanofibers' quality is suggested. Although XRD and ATR-FTIR experiments clearly verified that the drug ketoprofen was homogeneously distributed all over the TASDs and the traditional nanofibers in an amorphous state regardless of the ultrasonic treatments, the in vitro dissolution tests clearly demonstrated that the TASDs had a better sustained drug release performance than the traditional nanofibers in terms of the initial release rate and the sustained release time periods.

Engineered Shellac Beads-on-the-String Fibers Using Triaxial Electrospinning for Improved Colon-Targeted Drug Delivery

Colon-targeted drug delivery is gradually attracting attention because it can effectively treat colon diseases. Furthermore, electrospun fibers have great potential application value in the field of drug delivery because of their unique external shape and internal structure. In this study, a core layer of hydrophilic polyethylene oxide (PEO) and the anti-colon-cancer drug curcumin (CUR), a middle layer of ethanol, and a sheath layer of the natural pH-sensitive biomaterial shellac were used in a modified triaxial electrospinning process to prepare beads-on-the-string (BOTS) microfibers. A series of characterizations were carried out on the obtained fibers to verify the process-shape/structure-application relationship. The results of scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy indicated a BOTS shape and core-sheath structure. X-ray diffraction results indicated that the drug in the fibers was in an amorphous form. Infrared spectroscopy revealed the good compatibility of the components in the fibers. In vitro drug release revealed that the BOTS microfibers provide colon-targeted drug delivery and zero-order drug release. Compared to linear cylindrical microfibers, the obtained BOTS microfibers can prevent the leakage of drugs in simulated gastric fluid, and they provide zero-order release in simulated intestinal fluid because the beads in BOTS microfibers can act as drug reservoirs.

Biphasic drug release from electrospun structures

INTRODUCTION

Biphasic release, as a special drug-modified release profile that combines immediate and sustained release, allows fast therapeutic action and retains blood drug concentration for long periods. Electrospun nanofibers, particularly those with complex nanostructures produced by multi-fluid electrospinning processes, are potential novel biphasic drug delivery systems (DDSs).

AREAS COVERED

This review summarizes the most recent developments in electrospinning and related structures. In this review, the role of electrospun nanostructures in biphasic drug release was comprehensively explored. These electrospun nanostructures include monolithic nanofibers obtained through single-fluid blending electrospinning, core-shell and Janus nanostructures prepared via bifluid electrospinning, three-compartment nanostructures obtained via trifluid electrospinning, nanofibrous assemblies obtained through the layer-by-layer deposition of nanofibers, and the combined structure of electrospun nanofiber mats with casting films. The strategies and mechanisms through which complex structures facilitate biphasic release were analyzed.

EXPERT OPINION

Electrospun structures can provide many strategies for the development of biphasic drug release DDSs. However, many issues such as the scale-up productions of complex nanostructures, the in vivo verification of the biphasic release effects, keeping pace with the developments of multi-fluid electrospinning, drawing support from the state-of-the-art pharmaceutical excipients, and the combination with traditional pharmaceutical methods need to be addressed for real applications.

Fast and convenient delivery of fluidextracts liquorice through electrospun core-shell nanohybrids

Introduction: As an interdisciplinary field, drug delivery relies on the developments of modern science and technology. Correspondingly, how to upgrade the traditional dosage forms for a more efficacious, safer, and convenient drug delivery poses a continuous challenge to researchers.

Methods, results and discussion: In this study, a proof-of-concept demonstration was conducted to convert a popular traditional liquid dosage form (a commercial oral compound solution prepared from an intermediate licorice fluidextract) into a solid dosage form. The oral commercial solution was successfully encapsulated into the core–shell nanohybrids, and the ethanol in the oral solution was removed. The SEM and TEM evaluations showed that the prepared nanofibers had linear morphologies without any discerned spindles or beads and an obvious core–shell nanostructure. The FTIR and XRD results verified that the active ingredients in the commercial solution were compatible with the polymeric matrices and were presented in the core section in an amorphous state. Three different types of methods were developed, and the fast dissolution of the electrospun core–shell nanofibers was verified.

Conclusion: Coaxial electrospinning can act as a nano pharmaceutical technique to upgrade the traditional oral solution into fast-dissolving solid drug delivery films to retain the advantages of the liquid dosage forms and the solid dosage forms.

Piezoelectric Enhancement of Piezoceramic Nanoparticle-Doped PVDF/PCL Core-Sheath Fibers

Electrospinning is considered to be an efficient method to prepare piezoelectric thin films because of its ability to transform the phase of the polymers. A core-sheath structure can endow fibers with more functions and properties. In this study, fibers with a core-sheath structure were prepared using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) included with nanoparticles (NPs) as the shell layer and polycaprolactone (PCL) as the core layer. Their mechanical and piezoelectric properties were studied in detail. During the course of the electrospinning process, PVDF was demonstrated to increase the amount of its polar phase, with the help of nanoparticles acting as a nucleating agent to facilitate the change. PCL was chosen as a core material because of its good mechanical properties and its compatibility with PVDF. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) assessments revealed that the fibers have a core-sheath structure, and shell layers were loaded with nanoparticles. Mechanical testing showed that the core layer can significantly improve mechanical properties. The XRD patterns of the core-sheath structure fibers indicated the β phase domain the main component. Piezoelectric testing showed that the doped nanoparticles were able to enhance piezoelectric performances. The increases of mechanical and piezoelectric properties of core-sheath structure fibers provide a feasible application for wearable electronics, which require flexibility and good mechanical properties.

Electrospun fibers with blank surface and inner drug gradient for improving sustained release

New engineering methods and advanced strategies are highly desired for creating novel drug sustained release nanomaterials. In this study, a trilayer concentric spinneret was explored to implement several multifluid electrospinning processes. A trilayer core-shell nanofiber was successfully fabricated, which comprise a drug-free polymeric coating and an inner drug gradient distribution, and then compared with bilayer core-shell and monolithic medicated nanofibers. All the electrospun nanofibers similarly consisted of two components (guest drug acetaminophen and host polymer cellulose acetate) and presented a linear morphology. Due to the secondary interactions within nanofibers, loaded drug with amorphous state was detected, as demonstrated by SEM, DSC, XRD, and FTIR determinations. In vitro and in vivo gavage treatments to rats tests were carried out, the trilayer nanofiber with an elaborate structure design were demonstrated to provide better drug sustained release profile than the bilayer core-shell nanofibers in term of initial burst release, later tail-off release and long sustained release time period. The synergistic mechanism for improving the drug sustained release behaviors is disclosed. By breaking the traditional concepts about the implementation of multifluid electrospinning and the strategy of combining surface properties and inner structural characteristics, the present protocols open a new way for developing material processing methods and generating novel functional nanomaterials.

Fabrication of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) Fibers Using Centrifugal Fiber Spinning: Structure, Properties and Application Potential

Biobased and biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are currently gaining momentum. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) polymer has a useful processing window for extrusion and injection molding of packaging, agricultural and fishery applications with required flexibility. Processing PHBHHx into fibers using electrospinning or centrifugal fiber spinning (CFS) can further broaden the application area, although CFS remains rather unexplored. In this study, PHBHHx fibers are centrifugally spun from 4-12 wt.% polymer/chloroform solutions. Beads and beads-on-a-string (BOAS) fibrous structures with an average diameter (ϕ_av) between 0.5 and 1.6 µm form at 4-8 wt.% polymer concentrations, while more continuous fibers (ϕ_av = 3.6-4.6 µm) with few beads form at 10-12 wt.% polymer concentrations. This change is correlated with increased solution viscosity and enhanced mechanical properties of the fiber mats (strength, stiffness and elongation values range between 1.2-9.4 MPa, 11-93 MPa, and 102-188%, respectively), though the crystallinity degree of the fibers remains constant (33.0-34.3%). In addition, PHBHHx fibers are shown to anneal at 160 °C in a hot press into 10-20 µm compact top-layers on PHBHHx film substrates. We conclude that CFS is a promising novel processing technique for the production of PHBHHx fibers with tunable morphology and properties. Subsequent thermal post-processing as a barrier or active substrate top-layer offers new application potential.

Recent Progress of the Preparation and Application of Electrospun Porous Nanofibers

Electrospun porous nanofibers have gained a lot of interest recently in various fields because of their adjustable porous structure, high specific surface area, and large number of active sites, which can further enhance the performance of materials. This paper provides an overview of the common polymers, preparation, and applications of electrospun porous nanofibers. Firstly, the polymers commonly used to construct porous structures and the main pore-forming methods in porous nanofibers by electrospinning, namely the template method and phase separation method, are introduced. Secondly, recent applications of electrospun porous nanofibers in air purification, water treatment, energy storage, biomedicine, food packaging, sensor, sound and wave absorption, flame retardant, and heat insulation are reviewed. Finally, the challenges and possible research directions for the future study of electrospun porous nanofibers are discussed.

A Correlation Analysis between Undergraduate Students' Safety Behaviors in the Laboratory and Their Learning Efficiencies

Students' behaviors have a close relationship with their learning efficiencies, particularly about professional knowledge. Different types of behaviors should have different influences. Disclosing the special relationship between undergraduate students' conscious safety behaviors in their laboratory experiments with their learning efficiencies is important for fostering them into professional talents. In this study, a course entitled "Advanced Methods of Materials Characterization" was arranged to contain three sections: theoretical learning in the classroom, eight characterization experiments in the laboratory in sequence, and self-training to apply the knowledge. In the final examination, eighteen percent was allocated to the examination questions about safety issues. The students' scores for this section were associated with their total roll scores. Two quantitative relationships are disclosed. One is between the students' final examination score (y) and their subjective consciousness of safety behaviors (x) in their laboratory experiments, as y = 5.56 + 4.83 x (R = 0.9192). The other is between their grade point average (y) and safety behavior evaluation (x) as y = 0.51 + 0.15 x (R = 0.7296). Undergraduate students' behaviors in scientific laboratories need to be verified to have a close and positive relationship with their professional knowledge learning efficiencies. This offers a hint that improving students' safety behaviors and enhancing their subjective safety awareness are conducive to improving their learning efficiency for professional knowledge.

Recent Advances in the Processing and Manufacturing of Plant-Based Meat

Plant protein technology is a core area of biotechnology to ease the problem of human protein demand. Plant-based meat based on plant protein technology is a growing concern by global consumers in alleviating environmental pollution, cutting down resources consumption, and improving animal welfare. Plant-based meat simulates the texture, taste, and appearance of animal meat by using protein, lipid, carbohydrate, and other plant nutrients as the main substances. This review summarizes the main components of plant-based meat, processing technology, standard formula, market competition, and formula and texture of future research directions. According to the existing methods of plant-based meat fiber forming, the development process and characteristics of four production processes and equipment of plant-based meat spinning, extrusion, shearing, and 3D printing are emphatically expounded. The processing principles and methods of different processing technologies in plant-based meat production are summarized. The production process and equipment of plant-based meat will pay more attention to the joint production of various processes to improve the defects of plant-based meat production process.

A novel anthocyanin electrospun film by caffeic acid co-pigmentation for real-time fish freshness monitoring

In recent years, the use of intelligent and efficient food freshness indicators (FFIs) for monitoring food freshness has been studied widely. In this work, we employed polyacrylonitrile as polymer, blueberry anthocyanins as an indicator, and caffeic acid as a co-pigment and fabricated a novel colorimetric sensing film for real-time monitoring the freshness of fish. The total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) level is one of the potential indicators to evaluate meat freshness. Visual observation confirmed that the polyacrylonitrile-anthocyanin-caffeic acid film changed from pink to light purple, and then to dark purple providing a good indication of spoilage, which correlated well with the TVB-N content and pH values in fish. It is because the volatile ammonia combined with water to form NH₃·H₂O, and then NH₃·H₂O is hydrolyzed to form OH^- and NH₄⁺. The change of the polyacrylonitrile-anthocyanin film was caused by OH^-. Compared with the polyacrylonitrile-anthocyanin film without caffeic acid, the addition of the caffeic acid film had enhanced significantly ammonia responsiveness with a total color difference value of 29.897. And it was also observed that caffeic acid obviously improved the storage stability of the film. This study provided a reference for detecting food freshness using co-pigmentation and electrospinning encapsulation technology in combination.

Electrospun fibers as carriers for topical drug delivery and release in skin bandages and patches for atopic dermatitis treatment

The skin is a complex layer system and the most important barrier between the environment and the organism. In this review, we describe some widespread skin problems, with a focus on eczema, which are affecting more and more people all over the world. Most of treatment methods for atopic dermatitis (AD) are focused on increasing skin moisture and protecting from bacterial infection and external irritation. Topical and transdermal treatments have specific requirements for drug delivery. Breathability, flexibility, good mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and efficacy are important for the patches used for skin. Up to today, electrospun fibers are mostly used for wound dressing. Their properties, however, meet the requirements for skin patches for the treatment of AD. Active agents can be incorporated into fibers by blending, coaxial or side-by-side electrospinning, and also by physical absorption post-processing. Drug release from the electrospun membranes is affected by drug and polymer properties and the technique used to combine them into the patch. We describe in detail the in vitro release mechanisms, parameters affecting the drug transport, and their kinetics, including theoretical approaches. In addition, we present the current research on skin patch design. This review summarizes the current extensive know-how on electrospun fibers as skin drug delivery systems, while underlining the advantages in their prospective use as patches for atopic dermatitis. The role of essential oils in maintaining the postharvest quality and preservation of peach and other fruits

Fruits are highly susceptible to postharvest losses induced majorly by postharvest diseases. Peach are favored by consumers because of their high nutritional value and delicious taste. However, it was easy to be affected by fungal infection. The current effective method to control postharvest diseases of fruits is to use chemical fungicides, but these chemicals may cause adverse effects on human health and the residual was potentially harmful to nature and the environment. So, it is especially important to develop safe, non-toxic, and highly effective strategies for the preservation of the fruits. Essential oil, as a class of the natural bacterial inhibitor, has been proven to exhibit strong antibacterial activity, low toxicity, environmental friendliness, and induce fruit resistance to microorganism, which could be recognized as one of the alternatives to chemical fungicides. This paper reviews the research progress of essential oils (Eos) in the storage and preservation of fruits, especially the application in peach, as well as the application in active packaging such as edible coatings, microcapsules, and electrospinning loading. Electrospinning can prepare a variety of nanofibers from different viscoelastic polymer solutions, and has broad application prospects. The paper especially summarizes the application of the new Eos technology on peach. The essential oil with thymol, eugenol, and carvacrol as the main components has a better inhibitory effect on the postharvest disease of peaches, and can be further applied. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: As an environmentally friendly natural antibacterial agent, essential oil can be used as a substitute for chemical preservatives to keep fruits fresh. This paper summarizes the different preservation methods of essential oils for fruits, and especially summarizes the different preservation methods of essential oils for peaches after harvesting, as well as their inhibitory effects on pathogenic fungi. It could provide ideas for preservation of fruits and vegetables by essential oils.
