Evolution of the Free Energy Landscapes of n-Alkane Guests Bound within Supramolecular Complexes

Host Dynamics under General-Purpose Force Fields

Macrocyclic hosts as prototypical receptors to gaseous and drug-like guests are crucial components in pharmaceutical research. The external guests are often coordinated at the center of these macromolecular containers. The formation of host-guest coordination is accompanied by the broken of host-water and host-ion interactions and sometimes also involves some conformational rearrangements of the host. A balanced description of various components of interacting terms is indispensable. However, up to now, the modeling community still lacks a general yet detailed understanding of commonly employed general-purpose force fields and the host dynamics produced by these popular selections. To fill this critical gap, in this paper, we profile the energetics and dynamics of four types of popular macrocycles, including cucurbiturils, pillararenes, cyclodextrins, and octa acids. The presented investigations of force field definitions, refitting, and evaluations are unprecedently detailed. Based on the valuable observations and insightful explanations, we finally summarize some general guidelines on force field parametrization and selection in host-guest modeling.

Hiking down the Free Energy Landscape Using Sequential Solvent and Thermal Processing for Versatile Ordering of Block Copolymer Films

The kinetics and morphology of the ordering of block copolymer (BCP) films are highly dependent on the processing pathway, as the enthalpic and entropic forces driving the ordering processes can be quite different depending on process history. We may gain some understanding and control of this variability of BCP morphology with processing history through a consideration of the free energy landscape of the BCP material and a consideration of how the processing procedure moves the system through this energy landscape in a way that avoids having the system becoming trapped into well-defined metastable minima having a higher free energy than the target low free energy ordered structure. It is well known that standard thermal annealing (TA) of BCPs leads to structures corresponding to a well-defined stable free energy minimum; however, the BCP must be annealed for a very long time before the target low free energy structures can be achieved. Herein, we show that the same target low-energy structure can be achieved relatively quickly by subjecting as-cast films to an initial solvent annealing [direct immersion annealing (DIA) or solvent vapor annealing (SVA)] procedure, followed by a short period of TA. This process relies on lowering the activation energy barrier by reducing the glass-transition temperature through DIA (or SVA), followed by a multi-interface chain rearrangement through sequential TA. This energy landscape approach to ordering should be applicable to the process design for ordering many other complex materials.

The Effects of Lengths of Flavin Surfactant N-10-Alkyl Side Chains on Promoting Dispersion of a High-Purity and Diameter-Selective Single-Walled Nanotube

Flavin with defined helical self-assembly helps to understand chemical designs for obtaining high-purity semiconducting (s)-single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) in a diameter (dt)-selective manner for high-end applications. In this study, flavins containing 8, 12, 16, and 20 n-alkyl chains were synthesized, and their single/tandem effects on dt-selective s-SWNT dispersibility were investigated at isomolarity. Flavins with n-dodecyl and longer chain lengths (FC12, FC16, and FC20) act as good surfactants for stable SWNT dispersions whereas n-octyl flavin (FC8) exhibits poor dispersibility owing to the lack of SWNT buoyancy. When used with small-dt SWNT, FC8 displays chirality-selective SWNT dispersion. This behavior, along with various flavin helical motifs, prompts the development of criteria for 'side chain length (lS)' required for stable and dt-selective SWNT dispersion, which also explains lS-dependent dt-enrichment behavior. Moreover, SWNT dispersions with flavins with dodecyl and longer lS exhibit increased metallic (m)-SWNT, background absorption-contributing carbonaceous impurities (CIs) and preferential selectivity of s-SWNT with slightly larger dt. The increased CIs that affect the SWNT quantum yield were attributed to a solubility parameter. Furthermore, the effects of flavin lS, sonication bath temperature, centrifugal speed, and surfactant concentration on SWNT purity and s-/m-SWNT ratio were investigated. A tandem FC8/FC12 provides fine-tuning of dt-selective SWNT dispersion, wherein the FC8 ratio governs the tendency towards smaller dt. Kinetic and thermodynamic assemblies of tandem flavins result in different sorting behaviors in which wide dt-tunability was demonstrated using kinetic assembly. This study highlights the importance of appropriate side chain length and other extrinsic parameters to obtain dt-selective or high-purity s-SWNT.
