The stretching breakup of a conical liquid bridge is the core process of micro-dispensing. To precisely control the droplet loading and improve the dispensing resolution, a detailed study of bridge breakup with a moving contact line is required. A conical liquid bridge is established by an electric field and stretching breakup is investigated here. The effect of contact line state is investigated by examining the pressure at the symmetry axis. Compared to the pinned case, the moving contact line causes a shift of the pressure maximum from the bridge neck to top, and it facilitates the evacuation of the bridge top. For the moving case, factors affecting the contact line motion are then considered. The results show that the increase of the stretching velocity U and the decrease of the initial top radius R _top accelerate the contact line motion. And the amount of contact line movement is basically constant. To analyze the influence of the moving contact line on bridge breakup, neck evolution is tracked under different U. An increase of U decreases the breakup time and increases the breakup position. Based on the breakup position and the remnant radius, the influences of U and R _top on remnant volume V _d are examined. It is found that V _d decreases with an increase of U and increases with an increase of R _top. Accordingly, different sizes of remnant volume can be obtained by adjusting U and R _top. This is helpful for the optimization of liquid loading for transfer printing.

Role of Nanoparticles in Nanofluid Droplet Impact on Solid Surfaces

Splashing of a liquid droplet onto a substrate, while ubiquitous, sits at the intersection of several key fluid mechanical regions. Typically, this problem is often simplified to the transition between spreading and splashing, even for splashing on complex surfaces. Recently, there has been increased interest in using not just pure liquids but also nanofluids in applications such as spray cooling. While the addition of a few percent of nanoparticles to a Newtonian fluid does not change its apparent viscosity, the influence of the nanoparticles on the splashing transition is pronounced. We often view splashing in terms of fluid mechanics where a simple material is subjected to a complex flow and the fluid can be simply characterized by a Newtonian viscosity. For nanofluids, we have an apparently simple material in a complex flow, but the results show that the impact of the particles is nontrivial. This implies that we must now combine some of the insights we obtain from studying the rheological properties of nanosuspensions with this already complex problem.

Liquid Transfer for Viscoelastic Solutions

Viscoelastic liquid transfer from one surface to another is a process that finds applications in many technologies, primarily in printing. Here, cylindrical-shaped capillary bridges pinned between two parallel disks are considered. Specifically, the effects of polymer mass fraction, solution viscosity, disk diameter, initial aspect ratio, final aspect ratio, stretching velocity, and filling fraction (alike contact angle) are experimentally investigated in uniaxial extensional flow. Both Newtonian and viscoelastic polymer solutions are prepared using polyethylene glycol and polyethylene oxide, with a wide variety of mass fractions. The results show that the increase in polymer mass fraction and solvent viscosity reduces the liquid transfer to the top surface. Moreover, the increase in the initial and final stretching heights of the capillary bridge also decreases the liquid transfer for both Newtonian and viscoelastic solutions. Finally, the shape of the capillary bridge is varied by changing the liquid volume. Now, Newtonian and viscoelastic solutions exhibit opposite behaviors for the liquid transfer. These findings are discussed in terms of interfacial shape instability and gravitational drainage.

Capillary Forces between Concave Gripper and Spherical Particle for Micro-Objects Gripping

The capillary action between two solid surfaces has drawn significant attention in micro-objects manipulation. The axisymmetric capillary bridges and capillary forces between a spherical concave gripper and a spherical particle are investigated in the present study. A numerical procedure based on a shooting method, which consists of double iterative loops, was employed to obtain the capillary bridge profile and bring the capillary force subject to a constant volume condition. Capillary bridge rupture was characterized using the parameters of the neck radius, pressure difference, half-filling angle, and capillary force. The effects of various parameters, such as the contact angle of the spherical concave gripper, the radius ratio, and the liquid bridge volume on the dimensionless capillary force, are discussed. The results show that the radius ratio has a significant influence on the dimensionless capillary force for the dimensionless liquid bridge volumes of 0.01, 0.05, and 0.1 when the radius ratio value is smaller than 10. The effectiveness of the theorical approach was verified using simulation model and experiments.

Rupture of Liquid Bridges on Porous Tips: Competing Mechanisms of Spontaneous Imbibition and Stretching

Liquid bridges are commonly encountered in nature and the liquid transfer induced by their rupture is widely used in various industrial applications. In this work, with the focus on the porous tip, we studied the impacts of capillary effects on the liquid transfer induced by the rupture through numerical simulations. To depict the capillary effects of a porous tip, a time scale ratio, R_T, is proposed to compare the competing mechanisms of spontaneous imbibition and external drag. In terms of R_T, we then develop a theoretical model for estimating the liquid retention ratio considering the geometry, porosity, and wettability of tips. The mechanism presented in this work provides a possible approach to control the liquid transfer with better accuracy in microfluidics or microfabrications.
