Dynamic Focusing with High-Quality-Factor Metalenses

Toward "super-scintillation" with nanomaterials and nanophotonics

Following the discovery of X-rays, scintillators are commonly used as high-energy radiation sensors in diagnostic medical imaging, high-energy physics, astrophysics, environmental radiation monitoring, and security inspections. Conventional scintillators face intrinsic limitations including a low extraction efficiency of scintillated light and a low emission rate, leading to efficiencies that are less than 10 % for commercial scintillators. Overcoming these limitations will require new materials including scintillating nanomaterials ("nanoscintillators"), as well as new photonic approaches that increase the efficiency of the scintillation process, increase the emission rate of materials, and control the directivity of the scintillated light. In this perspective, we describe emerging nanoscintillating materials and three nanophotonic platforms: (i) plasmonic nanoresonators, (ii) photonic crystals, and (iii) high-Q metasurfaces that could enable high performance scintillators. We further discuss how a combination of nanoscintillators and photonic structures can yield a "super scintillator" enabling ultimate spatio-temporal resolution while enabling a significant boost in the extracted scintillation emission.

Broadband nonlinear modulation of incoherent light using a transparent optoelectronic neuron array

Nonlinear optical processing of ambient natural light is highly desired for computational imaging and sensing. Strong optical nonlinear response under weak broadband incoherent light is essential for this purpose. By merging 2D transparent phototransistors (TPTs) with liquid crystal (LC) modulators, we create an optoelectronic neuron array that allows self-amplitude modulation of spatially incoherent light, achieving a large nonlinear contrast over a broad spectrum at orders-of-magnitude lower intensity than achievable in most optical nonlinear materials. We fabricated a 10,000-pixel array of optoelectronic neurons, and experimentally demonstrated an intelligent imaging system that instantly attenuates intense glares while retaining the weaker-intensity objects captured by a cellphone camera. This intelligent glare-reduction is important for various imaging applications, including autonomous driving, machine vision, and security cameras. The rapid nonlinear processing of incoherent broadband light might also find applications in optical computing, where nonlinear activation functions for ambient light conditions are highly sought.

High quality factor metasurfaces for two-dimensional wavefront manipulation

The strong interaction of light with micro- and nanostructures plays a critical role in optical sensing, nonlinear optics, active optical devices, and quantum optics. However, for wavefront shaping, the required local control over light at a subwavelength scale limits this interaction, typically leading to low-quality-factor optical devices. Here, we demonstrate an avenue towards high-quality-factor wavefront shaping in two spatial dimensions based on all-dielectric higher-order Mie-resonant metasurfaces. We design and experimentally realize transmissive band stop filters, beam deflectors and high numerical aperture radial lenses with measured quality factors in the range of 202-1475 at near-infrared wavelengths. The excited optical mode and resulting wavefront control are both local, allowing versatile operation with finite apertures and oblique illumination. Our results represent an improvement in quality factor by nearly two orders of magnitude over previous localized mode designs, and provide a design approach for a new class of compact optical devices.

Reversibly reconfigurable GSST metasurface for broadband beam steering and achromatic focusing in the long-wave infrared

Active optical metasurfaces promise compact, lightweight, and energy-efficient optical systems with unprecedented performance. Chalcogenide phase-change material Ge₂Sb₂Se₄Te₁ (GSST) has shown tremendous advantages in the design of mid-infrared active metasurfaces. However, most of the GSST-based active metasurfaces can only work efficiently within a narrow frequency range. Furthermore, their design flexibility and reversible switching capability are severely restricted by the melting of GSST during re-amorphization. Here, we propose broadband, reversibly tunable, GSST-based transmissive metasurfaces operating in the long-wave infrared spectrum, where the GSST micro-rods are cladded by refractory materials. To accurately evaluate the performance of the proposed metasurfaces, two figures of merits are defined: FOM_Φ for the evaluation of wavefront matching, and FOM_op for the assessment of the overall performance incorporating both wavefront modulation efficiency and switching contrast ratio. For the proof of concept, two meta-devices are numerically presented: a multifunctional deflector that offers continuous beam steering and long-wave pass filtering simultaneously, and a large-area (1 cm × 1 cm) broadband (11-14 µm) varifocal metalens with the ability of achromatic imaging (12.5-13.5 µm). In particular, the metalens features high FOM_op values over 16 dB in the achromatic band, with the average focusing efficiency approximating 70% (60%) in amorphous (crystalline) state and a spectral switching contrast ratio surpassing 25 dB. Our design scheme provides an additional degree of freedom for dynamic modulation and offers a novel approach for achieving high-efficiency mid-infrared compact optical devices.

Multiresonant Nonlocal Metasurfaces

Optical metasurfaces supporting localized resonances have become a versatile platform for shaping the wavefront of light, but their low quality (Q-) factor modes inevitably modify the wavefront over extended momentum and frequency space, resulting in limited spectral and angular control. In contrast, periodic nonlocal metasurfaces have been providing great flexibility for both spectral and angular selectivity but with limited spatial control. Here, we introduce multiresonant nonlocal metasurfaces capable of shaping the spatial properties of light using several resonances with widely disparate Q-factors. In contrast to previous designs, the narrowband resonant transmission punctuates a broadband resonant reflection window enabled by a highly symmetric array, achieving simultaneous spectral filtering and wavefront shaping in the transmission mode. Through rationally designed perturbations, we realize nonlocal flat lenses suitable as compact band-pass imaging devices, ideally suited for microscopy. We further employ modified topology optimization to demonstrate high-quality-factor metagratings for extreme wavefront transformations with large efficiency.

Ultrahigh-Q guided mode resonances in an All-dielectric metasurface

High quality(Q) factor optical resonators are indispensable for many photonic devices. While very large Q-factors can be obtained theoretically in guided-mode settings, free-space implementations suffer from various limitations on the narrowest linewidth in real experiments. Here, we propose a simple strategy to enable ultrahigh-Q guided-mode resonances by introducing a patterned perturbation layer on top of a multilayer-waveguide system. We demonstrate that the associated Q-factors are inversely proportional to the perturbation squared while the resonant wavelength can be tuned through material or structural parameters. We experimentally demonstrate such high-Q resonances at telecom wavelengths by patterning a low-index layer on top of a 220 nm silicon on insulator substrate. The measurements show Q-factors up to 2.39 × 10⁵, comparable to the largest Q-factor obtained by topological engineering, while the resonant wavelength is tuned by varying the lattice constant of the top perturbation layer. Our results hold great promise for exciting applications like sensors and filters.

Universal Narrowband Wavefront Shaping with High Quality Factor Meta-Reflect-Arrays

Optical metasurfaces offer unprecedented flexibility in light wave manipulation but suffer weak resonant enhancement. Tackling this problem, we experimentally unveil a new phase gradient metasurface platform made entirely from individually addressable high quality factor (high-Q) silicon meta-atoms. Composed of pairs of nearly identical nanoblocks, these meta-atoms support dipolar-guided-mode resonances that, due to the controlled suppression of radiation loss, serve as highly sensitive phase pixels when placed above a mirror. A key novelty of this platform lies in the vanishingly small structural perturbations needed to produce universal phase fronts. Having fabricated elements with Q-factor ∼380 and spaced by λ/1.2, we achieve strong beam steering, up to 59% efficient, to angles 32.3°, 25.3°, and 20.9°, with variations in nanoantenna volume fractions across the metasurfaces of ≤2.6%, instead of >50% required by traditional versions. Aside from extreme sensitivity, the metasurfaces exhibit near-field intensity enhancement over 1000×. Taken together, these properties represent an exciting prospect for dynamic and nonlinear wave shaping.

Modeling of Enhanced Polar Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect by Surface Plasmons in Au Bowtie Arrays

The weak magneto-optical (MO) signal of traditional MO materials is indeed an important issue for their further practical applications. Although many strategies have been proposed to improve the MO effect, hybridization with noble metal nanostructures is a promising route in recent years due to the high localized-surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) effect. A new magneto-optical surface plasmon resonance (MOSPR) structure hybrid with Au bowtie arrays is proposed to increase the measuring range of the polar magneto-optical Kerr effect (PMOKE) and the quality factor through the LSPR effect. It is verified by a numerical simulation of the finite element method (FEM). The optimized parameters were found by modulating the shape and geometric dimensions. Owing to the significant LSPR from the Au bowties, a PMOKE amplification signal spectrum with narrow linewidth, and a high amplitude with high-sensing performance was achieved. Compared with the bare magnetic film alone, by optimizing the relevant parameters of the LSPR structure, the maximum signal increases 3255 times, and the quality factor can be greatly improved, which would provide important guidance and help for the practical application of MO devices.

Thermally reconfigurable metalens

Reconfigurable metalenses are compact optical components composed by arrays of meta-atoms that offer unique opportunities for advanced optical systems, from microscopy to augmented reality platforms. Although poorly explored in the context of reconfigurable metalenses, thermo-optical effects in resonant silicon nanoresonators have recently emerged as a viable strategy to realize tunable meta-atoms. In this work, we report the proof-of-concept design of an ultrathin (300 nm thick) and thermo-optically reconfigurable silicon metalens operating at a fixed, visible wavelength (632 nm). Importantly, we demonstrate continuous, linear modulation of the focal-length up to 21% (from 165 μm at 20 °C to 135 μm at 260 °C). Operating under right-circularly polarized light, our metalens exhibits an average conversion efficiency of 26%, close to mechanically modulated devices, and has a diffraction-limited performance. Overall, we envision that, combined with machine-learning algorithms for further optimization of the meta-atoms, thermally reconfigurable metalenses with improved performance will be possible. Also, the generality of this approach could offer inspiration for the realization of active metasurfaces with other emerging materials within field of thermo-nanophotonics.

Optical and Thermal Design and Analysis of Phase-Change Metalenses for Active Numerical Aperture Control

The control of a lens's numerical aperture has potential applications in areas such as photography and imaging, displays, sensing, laser processing and even laser-implosion fusion. In such fields, the ability to control lens properties dynamically is of much interest, and active meta-lenses of various kinds are under investigation due to their modulation speed and compactness. However, as of yet, meta-lenses that explicitly offer dynamic control of a lens's numerical aperture have received little attention. Here, we design and simulate active meta-lenses (specifically, focusing meta-mirrors) using chalcogenide phase-change materials to provide such control. We show that, operating at a wavelength of 3000 nm, our devices can change the numerical aperture by up to a factor of 1.85 and operate at optical intensities of the order of 1.2 × 10⁹ Wm^-2. Furthermore, we show the scalability of our design towards shorter wavelengths (visible spectrum), where we demonstrate a change in NA by a factor of 1.92.

Multifunctional resonant wavefront-shaping meta-optics based on multilayer and multi-perturbation nonlocal metasurfaces

Photonic devices rarely provide both elaborate spatial control and sharp spectral control over an incoming wavefront. In optical metasurfaces, for example, the localized modes of individual meta-units govern the wavefront shape over a broad bandwidth, while nonlocal lattice modes extended over many unit cells support high quality-factor resonances. Here, we experimentally demonstrate nonlocal dielectric metasurfaces in the near-infrared that offer both spatial and spectral control of light, realizing metalenses focusing light exclusively over a narrowband resonance while leaving off-resonant frequencies unaffected. Our devices attain this functionality by supporting a quasi-bound state in the continuum encoded with a spatially varying geometric phase. We leverage this capability to experimentally realize a versatile platform for multispectral wavefront shaping where a stack of metasurfaces, each supporting multiple independently controlled quasi-bound states in the continuum, molds the optical wavefront distinctively at multiple wavelengths and yet stay transparent over the rest of the spectrum. Such a platform is scalable to the visible for applications in augmented reality and transparent displays.

Active multiband varifocal metalenses based on orbital angular momentum division multiplexing

Metalenses as miniature flat lenses exhibit a substantial potential in replacing traditional optical component. Although the metalenses have been intensively explored, their functions are limited by poor active ability, narrow operating band and small depth of field (DOF). Here, we show a dielectric metalens consisting of TiO₂ nanofins array with ultrahigh aspect ratio to realize active multiband varifocal function. Regulating the orbital angular momentum (OAM) by the phase assignment covering the 2π range, its focal lengths can be switched from 5 mm to 35 mm. This active optical multiplexing uses the physical properties of OAM channels to selectively address and decode the vortex beams. The multiband capability and large DOFs with conversion efficiency of 49% for this metalens are validated for both 532 nm and 633 nm, and the incidence wavelength can further change the focal lengths. This non-mechanical tunable metalens demonstrates the possibility of active varifocal metalenses.

A dielectric metalens consisting of ultrahigh aspect ratio TiO₂ nanofins array is demonstrated to realize active multiband varifocal functionality. By regulating the orbital angular momentum, the focal length can be switched from 5 mm to 35 mm with large DOFs.

Dielectric metalens for miniaturized imaging systems: progress and challenges

Lightweight, miniaturized optical imaging systems are vastly anticipated in these fields of aerospace exploration, industrial vision, consumer electronics, and medical imaging. However, conventional optical techniques are intricate to downscale as refractive lenses mostly rely on phase accumulation. Metalens, composed of subwavelength nanostructures that locally control light waves, offers a disruptive path for small-scale imaging systems. Recent advances in the design and nanofabrication of dielectric metalenses have led to some high-performance practical optical systems. This review outlines the exciting developments in the aforementioned area whilst highlighting the challenges of using dielectric metalenses to replace conventional optics in miniature optical systems. After a brief introduction to the fundamental physics of dielectric metalenses, the progress and challenges in terms of the typical performances are introduced. The supplementary discussion on the common challenges hindering further development is also presented, including the limitations of the conventional design methods, difficulties in scaling up, and device integration. Furthermore, the potential approaches to address the existing challenges are also deliberated.

Metasurface-empowered spectral and spatial light modulation for disruptive holographic displays

The holographic display, one of the most realistic ways to reconstruct optical images in three-dimensional (3D) space, has gained a lot of attention as a next-generation display platform for providing deeper immersive experiences to users. So far, diffractive optical elements (DOEs) and spatial light modulators (SLMs) have been used to generate holographic images by modulating electromagnetic waves at each pixel. However, such architectures suffer from limitations in terms of having a resolution of only a few microns and the bulkiness of the entire optical system. In this review, we describe novel metasurfaces-based nanophotonic platforms that have shown exceptional control of electromagnetic waves at the subwavelength scale as promising candidates to overcome existing restrictions, while realizing flat optical devices. After introducing the fundamentals of metasurfaces in terms of spatial and spectral wavefront modulation, we present a variety of multiplexing approaches for high-capacity and full-color metaholograms exploiting the multiple properties of light as an information carrier. We then review tunable metaholograms using active materials modulated by several external stimuli. Afterward, we discuss the integration of metasurfaces with other optical elements required for future 3D display platforms in augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) displays such as lenses, beam splitters, diffusers, and eye-tracking sensors. Finally, we address the challenges of conventional nanofabrication methods and introduce scalable preparation techniques that can be applied to metasurface-based nanophotonic technologies towards commercially and ergonomically viable future holographic displays.

High-Quality-Factor Silicon-on-Lithium Niobate Metasurfaces for Electro-optically Reconfigurable Wavefront Shaping

Dynamically reconfigurable metasurfaces promise compact and lightweight spatial light modulation for many applications, including LiDAR, AR/VR, and LiFi systems. Here, we design and computationally investigate high-quality-factor silicon-on-lithium niobate metasurfaces with electrically driven, independent control of its constituent nanobars for full phase tunability with high tuning efficiency. Free-space light couples to guided modes within each nanobar via periodic perturbations, generating quality factors exceeding 30,000 while maintaining a bar spacing of <λ/1.5. We achieve nearly 2π phase variation with an applied bias not exceeding ±25 V, maintaining a reflection efficiency above 91%. Using full-field simulations, we demonstrate a high-angle (51°) switchable beamsplitter with a diffracted efficiency of 93% and an angle-tunable beamsteerer, spanning 18-31°, with up to 86% efficiency, all using the same metasurface device. Our platform provides a foundation for highly efficient wavefront-shaping devices with a wide dynamic tuning range capable of generating nearly any transfer function.

Sub-micrometer direct laser writing using an optimized binary-amplitude zone plate lens

Direct laser writing (DLW) is a versatile and reliable lithography method widely used in many micro and nano fabrication areas. However, the resolution of DLW is limited by the optical diffraction limit. Many methods have been proposed to improve the lithography resolution, but with either high cost or increasing the complexity of the system. Here, we propose a high numerical aperture binary-amplitude-type zone plate lens that can achieve a sub-wavelength focal spot with a large depth of focus and long working distance. The critical dimension of such a lens is set at micrometer scale for ease of fabrication. By integrating the as-designed planar lens into a DLW system, we experimentally demonstrate less than 300 nm lithography resolution with exposure depth larger than 500 nm. Our results show the possibility of writing sub-micrometer scale structures with the integration of a planar lens into the DLW system, which enables miniaturization and compactness of lithography instruments for many applications.

Optical tuning of dielectric nanoantennas for thermo-optically reconfigurable nonlinear metasurfaces

We demonstrate optically tunable control of second-harmonic generation in all-dielectric nanoantennas: by using a control beam that is absorbed by the nanoresonator, we thermo-optically change the refractive index of the radiating element to modulate the amplitude of the second-harmonic signal. For a moderate temperature increase of roughly 40 K, modulation of the efficiency up to 60% is demonstrated; this large tunability of the single meta-atom response paves the way to exciting avenues for reconfigurable homogeneous and heterogeneous metasurfaces.

Recent Progress on Ultrathin Metalenses for Flat Optics

As technology advances, electrical devices such as smartphones have become more and more compact, leading to a demand for the continuous miniaturization of optical components. Metalenses, ultrathin flat optical elements composed of metasurfaces consisting of arrays of subwavelength optical antennas, provide a method of meeting those requirements. Moreover, metalenses have many other distinctive advantages including aberration correction, active tunability, and semi-transparency, compared to their conventional refractive and diffractive counterparts. Therefore, over the last decade, great effort has been focused on developing metalenses to investigate and broaden the capabilities of metalenses for integration into future applications. Here, we discuss recent progress on metalenses including their basic design principles and notable characteristics such as aberration correction, tunability, and multifunctionality.

High quality factor phase gradient metasurfaces

Dielectric microcavities with quality factors (Q-factors) in the thousands to billions markedly enhance light-matter interactions, with applications spanning high-efficiency on-chip lasing, frequency comb generation and modulation and sensitive molecular detection. However, as the dimensions of dielectric cavities are reduced to subwavelength scales, their resonant modes begin to scatter light into many spatial channels. Such enhanced scattering is a powerful tool for light manipulation, but also leads to high radiative loss rates and commensurately low Q-factors, generally of order ten. Here, we describe and experimentally demonstrate a strategy for the generation of high Q-factor resonances in subwavelength-thick phase gradient metasurfaces. By including subtle structural perturbations in individual metasurface elements, resonances are created that weakly couple free-space light into otherwise bound and spatially localized modes. Our metasurface can achieve Q-factors >2,500 while beam steering light to particular directions. High-Q beam splitters are also demonstrated. With high-Q metasurfaces, the optical transfer function, near-field intensity and resonant line shape can all be rationally designed, providing a foundation for efficient, free-space-reconfigurable and nonlinear nanophotonics.
