Abstract
The development of general methods for asymmetric benzylation of prochiral carbon nucleophiles remains a challenge in organic synthesis. The merging of ruthenium catalysis and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis for asymmetric redox benzylation of enals has been achieved, which opens up strategic opportunities for the asymmetric benzylation reactions. A wide range of 3,3'-disubstituted oxindoles with a stereogenic quaternary carbon center widely existing in natural products and biologically interesting molecules is successfully obtained with excellent enantioselectivities [up to 99% enantiomeric excess (ee)]. The generality of this catalytic strategy was further highlighted by its successful application in the late-stage functionalization of oxindole skeletons. Furthermore, the linear correlation between ee values of NHC precatalyst and the product elucidated the independent catalytic cycle of either the NHC catalyst or the ruthenium complex.

Catalytic asymmetric Tsuji-Trost α-benzylation reaction of N-unprotected amino acids and benzyl alcohol derivatives. Nat Commun 2022; 13:2509. Abstract
Catalytic asymmetric Tsuji–Trost benzylation is a promising strategy for the preparation of chiral benzylic compounds. However, only a few such transformations with both good yields and enantioselectivities have been achieved since this reaction was first reported in 1992, and its use in current organic synthesis is restricted. In this work, we use N-unprotected amino acid esters as nucleophiles in reactions with benzyl alcohol derivatives. A ternary catalyst comprising a chiral aldehyde, a palladium species, and a Lewis acid is used to promote the reaction. Both mono- and polycyclic benzyl alcohols are excellent benzylation reagents. Various unnatural optically active α-benzyl amino acids are produced in good-to-excellent yields and with good-to-excellent enantioselectivities. This catalytic asymmetric method is used for the formal synthesis of two somatostatin mimetics and the proposed structure of natural product hypoestestatin 1. A mechanism that plausibly explains the stereoselective control is proposed. The catalytic asymmetric benzylations of prochiral nucleophiles are very limited. Here, the authors disclose an asymmetric α−benzylation of N-unprotected amino acids with benzyl alcohol derivatives by a chiral aldehyde-involved catalytic system.

Abstract
The synergistic chiral Lewis acid/achiral Pd catalyst system was successfully applied in the enantioselective benzylation of various imine esters, giving a range of α-benzyl-substituted α-amino acid derivatives in satisfactory yield with excellent enantioselectivity. It is worth noting that this strategy exhibits good tolerance for bicyclic and monocyclic benzylic electrophiles. Furthermore, the utility of this synthetic protocol was demonstrated by the expedient preparation of enantioenriched antihypertensive drug α-methyl-l-dopa.

Abstract
The palladium-catalyzed benzylic-like nucleophilic substitution of benzofuran-2-ylmethyl acetate with N, S, O and C soft nucleophiles has been investigated. The success of the reaction is dramatically influenced by the choice of catalytic system: with nitrogen based nucleophiles the reaction works well with Pd2(dba)3/dppf, while with sulfur, oxygen and carbo-nucleophiles [Pd(η3-C3H5)Cl]2/XPhos is more efficient. The regiochemical outcome shows that the nucleophilic substitution occurs only on the benzylic position of the η3-(benzofuryl)methyl complex. The high to excellent yields and the simplicity of the experimental procedure make this protocol a versatile synthetic tool for the preparation of 2-substituted benzo[b]furans.

Abstract
Ligand-controlled palladium-catalyzed divergent synthesis of isonitriles and nitriles from benzylic carbonates and TMSCN has been developed. The BINAP- or DPEphos-ligated palladium catalyst selectively provides the corresponding benzylic isonitriles, whereas their regioisomers, benzylic nitriles, are formed exclusively under phosphine ligand-free conditions. Mechanistic studies reveal that isonitrile is the primary product under both conditions, but it is isomerized into nitrile in the absence of ancillary phosphine ligands.

Abstract
This perspective showcases our development of benzylic and allylic amine and alcohol derivatives as electrophiles for stereospecific, nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, as well as the prior art that inspired our efforts. The success of our effort has relied on the use of benzyl ammonium triflates as electrophiles for cross-couplings via C-N bond activation and benzylic and allylic carboxylates for cross-couplings via C-O bond activation. Our work, along with others' exciting discoveries, has demonstrated the potential of stereospecific, nickel-catalyzed cross-couplings of alkyl electrophiles in asymmetric synthesis, and enables efficient generation of both tertiary and quaternary stereocenters.

Abstract
Hydrodebromination of allylic and benzylic bromides was successfully achieved by a rhodium porphyrin complex catalyst using water as the hydrogen source without a sacrificial reductant. Mechanistic investigations suggest that bromine atom abstraction via a rhodium porphyrin metalloradical operates to give the rhodium porphyrin alkyl species and the subsequent hydrolysis of the rhodium porphyrin alkyl species to a hydrocarbon product is a key step to harness the hydrogen from water.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed benzylic substitution of tert-butyl diarylmethyl carbonates with a pinacol-derived H-phosphonate proceeds to deliver the corresponding benzylic phosphorylated products in good yields. Moreover, the asymmetric synthesis is possible via a Pd/( Rp, R'p)-( S)-Mandyphos-catalyzed kinetic resolution-DYKAT (dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformation) sequence, and optically active α-chiral diarylmethylphosphonates are obtained with synthetically useful yields and enantiomeric ratios (up to 50% and 92:8 er).

Abstract
A Pd/(R)-BINAP-catalyzed enantioselective benzylic sulfonation of diarylmethyl carbonates with sodium sulfinates proceeds to deliver the corresponding chiral diarylmethyl sulfones in good yields with high enantioselectivity. The reaction occurs in a dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformation (DYKAT) manner and thus provides convergent access to optically active benzylic sulfones from racemic secondary benzylic carbonates. Additionally, the addition of H2 O is found to be critical for high enantioselectivity.
