Abstract
[3+2] Annulations are a powerful method for the synthesis of five-membered heterocyclic compounds. The annulations have concerted cycloaddition and formal (stepwise) cycloaddition reaction pathways. In addition to the well-established O-centered and N-centered ylides, epoxides and aziridines could serve as synthetic equivalent of 1,3-dipoles for [3+2] annulation with dipolarophiles for making functionalized tetrahydrofuran, pyrrolidine, and associated compounds. This review article covers recent development on epoxide- and aziridine-based [3+2] annulation reactions. The reactions are classified based on the ring opening conditions, including acid/base catalysis, organocatalysis, and transitional-metal catalysis.

Abstract
For nearly 60 years, significant research efforts have been focused on developing strategies for the cycloaddition of bicyclobutanes (BCBs). However, higher-order cycloaddition and catalytic asymmetric cycloaddition of BCBs have been long-standing formidable challenges. Here, we report Pd-catalyzed ligand-controlled, tunable cycloadditions for the divergent synthesis of bridged bicyclic frameworks. The dppb ligand facilitates the formal (5+3) cycloaddition of BCBs and vinyl oxiranes, yielding valuable eight-membered ethers with bridged bicyclic scaffolds in 100% regioselectivity. The Cy-DPEphos ligand promotes selective hetero-[2σ+2σ] cycloadditions to access pharmacologically important 2-oxabicyclo[3.1.1]heptane (O-BCHeps). Furthermore, the corresponding catalytic asymmetric synthesis of O-BCHeps with 94-99% ee has been achieved using chiral (S)-DTBM-Segphos, representing the first catalytic asymmetric cross-dimerization of two strained rings. The obtained O-BCHeps are promising bioisosteres for ortho-substituted benzenes.

Abstract
This present review delineates the repertoire of vinyl cyclopropanes and their stuctural analogues to accomplish a wide array of oxa-cycles, aza-cycles, and thia-cycles under transition metal catalysis and metal-free approaches from early 2019 to the present date. The generation of electrophilic π-allyl intermediates and 1-3/1-5-dipolarophile chemistry originating from VCPs are always green, step- and atom-economical and sustainable strategies in comparsion with prefunctionalized and/or C-H activation protocols. Here, the strained ring-system extends its applicability by relieving the strain to undergo a ring-expansion reaction to accomplish 5-9 membered carbo- and heterocyclic systems. The availability of chiral ligands in the ring-expansion reaction of VCPs and their analogues has paved the way to realizing asymmetric synthetic transformations.

Abstract
Cyclic N-sulfonyl aldimines are well-known aza-[2C]-synthons for various [2 + n] annulation reactions. Herein we describe a novel base mediated [2 + 1] annulation and a regioselective aziridine ring-opening reaction cascade, which provides an efficient and distinct synthetic strategy from readily available cyclic N-sulfonyl aldimines and α-carbonyl sulfonium salts leading to β-amino ketone derivatives through the corresponding fused tri-substituted aziridines. This one-pot, two-step process involves formation of C-C and C-N bonds and subsequent cleavage of a C-N bond. The features of the developed reaction include the use of mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope, and excellent yields. The synthetic utility of this approach was demonstrated by gram-scale operation and further product derivatizations.

Abstract
A novel approach for the synthesis of unsaturated 7-membered lactones by Pd-catalyzed [5+2] dipolar cycloaddition of vinylethylene carbonates (VECs) and C5-substituted Meldrum's acid derivatives has been developed. Various Meldrum's acid derivatives worked well in this reaction under mild reaction conditions. A variety of 7-membered lactones can be accessed in a facile manner in moderate to good yields by employing easily prepared Meldrum's acid derivatives.

Abstract
An Et3N-catalyzed cascade [3 + 2]-annulation of β-oxo-acrylamides with cyclic N-sulfonyl ketimines or sulfamate-derived imines is developed under mild reaction conditions, which provides a concise and efficient route to access valuable sultam- or sulfamidate-fused imidazolidinone derivatives in good to excellent yields (80-95% yields) with excellent diastereoselectivities (>20:1 drs). The current protocol features atom economy, a transition-metal-free process, and broad functional group tolerance. Moreover, the asymmetric variant of the [3 + 2]-cycloaddition reaction was achieved in the presence of diphenylethanediamine or quinine-based bifunctional squaramide organocatalysts C-1 and C-11, giving the corresponding chiral polycyclic imidazolidinones in 68-90% yields with 25-94% ees and >20:1 drs in all cases.

Abstract
A DMAP-catalyzed sequential benzannulation and lactonization strategy in which δ-acetoxy allenoate functions as a 5C-synthon in its reaction with cyclic sulfamidate imines is reported. This platform delivers π-extended coumarin frameworks under metal-free conditions via allylic elimination followed by Mannich coupling, proton shifts, C-N bond cleavage, and lactonization as key steps. The driving force for this domino reaction is the formation of the diene-ammonium intermediate and O-S bond cleavage. ESI-HRMS has been useful in gaining insights into the reaction pathway.

Abstract
A powerful CuCl-catalyzed sequential one-pot reaction of aryl methyl ketoxime acetates with cyclic N-sulfonyl imines followed by elimination in the presence of base is reported. This hydrazine-free method conveniently makes C-C and N-N bonds via a radical cleavage of the N-O bond, delivering a special class of C3-hydroxyarylated pyrazoles in good yields. Surprisingly, while employing CuI as a catalyst instead of CuCl, the reaction proceeds through a non-radical pathway which embodies a new tactic for the high-yielding access to value-added conjugated N-unsubstituted ketimines. Moreover, additive-free approach to sulfamidate-fused-pyrazoles was achieved by successfully catalyzing addition and oxidative N-N bond-making reactions by CuI and CuCl, respectively. Significantly, our novel technique could convert the prepared ketimines into the pharmacologically recognized 6H-benzo[c]chromene frameworks.

Abstract
Medium-sized heterocycles are widespread among a spectrum of structurally intriguing and biologically significant natural products and synthetic pharmaceuticals. Metal-catalyzed high-order dipolar annulations resembling reactions of metal-containing reactive dipoles with dipolarophiles constitute a highly efficient and flexible strategy for constructing medium-sized heterocycles. Mechanistically, these annulation reactions usually proceeding through stepwise pathways are different from the classic high-order pericyclic reactions that follow the Woodward-Hoffman rules. More significantly, asymmetric high-order dipolar annulations using chiral organometallic catalysts have been proven successful for constructing chiral medium-sized heterocycles with high enantio- and diastereoselectivity. This review highlights the impressive advances in this area and is focused on the reactivity, scope, mechanisms and applications of high-order dipolar annulation reactions.

Abstract
An unprecedented asymmetric γ-allylic alkylation of free dienolates via Sc/Ir dual catalysis is reported, which affords a range of synthetically versatile γ-allylic crotonaldehydes in high efficiency with excellent chemo-, regio-, and enantioselectivities. The dienolates bearing no essential auxiliary groups were generated in situ by scandium triflate-mediated Meinwald rearrangement of vinyloxiranes atom-economically. With the assistance of computational density functional theory calculations, a Sc/Ir bimetallic catalytic cycle was proposed to illustrate the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
In this paper, we designed and synthesized a new type of cyclic carbonates, allenylethylene carbonates (AECs). With AECs as reactive precursors, we developed palladium-catalyzed (3+3) annulation of AECs with nitrile oxides. Various AECs worked well in this reaction under mild reaction conditions. A variety of 5,6-dihydro-1,4,2-dioxazine derivatives with allenyl quaternary stereocenters can be accessed in a facile manner in high yields (≤98%).

Abstract
The first catalytic asymmetric multiple vinylogous addition reactions initiated by Meinwald rearrangement of vinyl epoxides were realized by employing chiral N,N'-dioxide/ScIII complex catalysts. The vinyl epoxides, as masked β,γ-unsaturated aldehydes, via direct vinylogous additions with isatins, 2-alkenoylpyridines or methyleneindolinones, provided a facile and efficient way for the synthesis of chiral 3-hydroxy-3-substituted oxindoles, α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and spiro-cyclohexene indolinones, respectively with high efficiency and stereoselectivity. The control experiments and kinetic studies revealed that the Lewis acid acted as dual-tasking catalyst, controlling the initial rearrangement to match subsequent enantioselective vinylogous addition reactions. A catalytic cycle with a possible transition model was proposed to illustrate the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
An efficient (3 + 2) cycloaddition triggered annulation is reported to access 1,3-benzoxazepine frameworks. With amine base, sulfamate-derived cyclic imines readily react with glycine aldimino esters to furnish benzo-fused seven-membered heterocyclic products in good yields. The cascade reaction involves the formation of one C-C, one C-N, and one C-O bond along with the cleavage of two C-N bonds and one S-O bond. The synthesis of o-tyrosine analogues has also been accomplished from annulation products.

Abstract
A diastereoselective (3 + 2) cycloaddition of N-sulfonyl ketimines with vinylethylene carbonates (VECs) in the presence of Pd2dba3·CHCl3 and PPh3 has been developed. The reaction of various substituted VECs and diverse cyclic N-sulfonyl ketimines proceeded smoothly under mild conditions, giving highly functionalized oxazolidine frameworks in good to excellent yields with moderate to good diastereoselectivities. With the use of spiroketal-based diphosphine SKP as a chiral ligand, an asymmetric version of the current (3 + 2) cycloaddition was achieved, and chiral products were obtained in >99% ee in most cases.

Abstract
The efficient and selective synthesis of functionalized seven-membered rings remains an important pursuit within synthetic organic chemistry, as this motif appears in numerous drug-like molecules and natural products. Use of cycloaddition reactions remains an attractive approach for their construction within the perspective of atom and step economy. Additionally, the ability to combine multiple components in a single reaction has the potential to allow for efficient combinatorial strategies of diversity-oriented synthesis. The inherent entropic penalty associated with achieving these transformations has impressively been overcome with development of catalysis, whereby the reaction components can be pre-organized through activation by transition-metal-catalysis. The fine-tuning of metal/ligand combinations as well as reaction conditions allows for achieving chemo-, regio-, diastereo- and enantioselectivity in these transformations. Herein, we discuss recent advances in transition-metal-catalyzed construction of seven-membered rings via combination of 2-4 components mediated by a variety of metals. An emphasis is placed on the mechanistic aspects of these transformations to both illustrate the state of the science and to highlight the unique application of novel processes of transition-metals in these transformations.

Abstract
An efficient preparation of sulfamate-fused 2-aminopyrroles was achieved through an isocyanide-based three-component [1+2+2] annulation of isocyanides, dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates, and sulfamate-derived cyclic imines in good to excellent yields (up to 99 %). This reaction proceeds smoothly without any activation or modification of substances under neutral and metal-free conditions. The reaction could also be conveniently performed on a gram scale.

Abstract
Medium-sized heterocycles exist in a broad spectrum of biologically active natural products and medicinally important synthetic compounds. The construction of medium-sized rings remains challenging, particularly the assembly of different ring sizes from the same type of substrate. Here we report palladium-catalyzed, regiodivergent [5 + 4] and [5 + 2] annulations of vinylethylene carbonates and allylidenemalononitriles. We describe the production of over 50 examples of nine- and seven-membered heterocycles in high isolated yields and excellent regioselectivities. We demonstrate the synthetic utility of this approach by converting a nine-membered ring product to an interesting polycyclic caged molecule via a [2 + 2] transannulation. Mechanistic studies suggest that the [5 + 2] annulation proceeds through palladium-catalyzed ring-opening/re-cyclization from the [5 + 4] adducts. Here we report palladium-catalyzed, regiodivergent [5 + 4] and [5 + 2] annulations of vinylethylene carbonates and allylidenemalononitriles affording over 50 medium-sized heterocycles in high isolated yields with excellent regioselectivities.![]()

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed ring-opening oxo-formal [3 + 2]-cycloaddition reaction of novel donor-acceptor spirovinylcyclopropyl oxindole with 3-oxindole is described. The developed protocol provides facile access to oxo-bispirooxindole derivatives in good yields (up to 82% yield) with excellent diastereoselectivities (up to 20:1 dr).

Abstract
The palladium-catalyzed [3 + 2] cycloaddition of vinylcyclopropanes and 1-azadienes has been developed under mild reaction conditions, giving the multisubstituted cyclopentane derivatives in good to excellent yields with moderate to good diastereoselectivities. The relative configuration of both diastereomers of the products have been determined through X-ray crystallographic diffraction.
