Abstract
Similar to proton exchange membrane fuel cell, anion-exchange membrane fuel cell is also a significant energy conversion device for achieving the utilization of clean hydrogen energy. However, the cathodic alkaline oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is kinetically not favored and usually requires platinum-group metal (PGM) catalysts such as Pt/C to reduce the overpotential. The major challenge in using PGM-free catalysts for ORR is their low efficiency and poor stability, which urgently demands new concepts and strategies to address this issue. Herein, we controllably manufactured a N, S-co doped graphene encapsulating uniform cobalt-rich sulfides (Co8FeS8@NSG) by a universal synthesis strategy. After encapsulation, electron transfer from the encapsulated cobalt-rich sulfides to the doped graphene was greatly promoted, which effectively optimizes the electronic structure of the doped graphene, thereby enhancing the ORR activity of the doped graphene surface. Consequently, the Co8FeS8@NSG exhibits enhanced ORR activity with a higher half-wave potential of 0.868 V (versus reversible hydrogen electrode, vs. RHE) when compared with pure NSG (0.765 V vs. RHE). Density functional theory calculations further confirm that the construction of interface for NSG encapsulating cobalt-rich sulfides could conspicuously elevate the ORR activity through slightly positively-charged C active site and thus simultaneously enhancing electronic conductivity.

Abstract
The rational design of advanced nanohybrids (NHs) with optimized interface electronic environment and rapid reaction kinetics is pivotal to electrocatalytic schedule. Herein, we developed a multiple heterogeneous Co9 S8 /Co3 S4 /Cu2 S nanoparticle in which Co3 S4 germinates between Co9 S8 and Cu2 S. Using high-angle annular-dark-field imaging and theoretical calculation, it was found that the integration of Co9 S8 and Cu2 S tends to trigger the interface phase transition of Co9 S8 , leading to Co3 S4 interlayer due to the low formation energy of Co3 S4 /Cu2 S (-7.61 eV) than Co9 S8 /Cu2 S (-5.86 eV). Such phase transition not only lowers the energy barrier of oxygen evolution reaction (OER, from 0.335 eV to 0.297 eV), but also increases charge carrier density (from 7.76×1014 to 2.09×1015 cm-3 ), and creates more active sites. Compared to Co9 S8 and Cu2 S, the Co9 S8 /Co3 S4 /Cu2 S NHs also demonstrate notable photothermal effect that can heat the catalyst locally, offset the endothermic enthalpy change of OER, and promote carrier migrate, reaction intermediates adsorption/deprotonation to improve reaction kinetics. Profiting from these favorable factors, the Co9 S8 /Co3 S4 /Cu2 S catalyst only requires an OER overpotential of 181 mV and overall water splitting cell voltage of 1.43 V to driven 10 mA cm-2 under the irradiation of near-infrared light, outperforming those without light irradiation and many reported Co-based catalysts.

Abstract
Carbon aerogel (CA) based materials have multiple advantages, including high porosity, tunable molecular structures, and environmental compatibility. Increasing interest, which has focused on CAs as electrocatalysts for sustainable applications including oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) has recently been raised. However, a systematic review covering the most recent progress to boost CA-based electrocatalysts for ORR/OER/HER/CO2RR is now absent. To eliminate the gap, this critical review provides a timely and comprehensive summarization of the applications, synthesis methods, and principles. Furthermore, prospects for emerging synthesis, screening, and construction methods are outlined.

Abstract
Exploring cost-effective non-precious metal electrocatalysts is vital for the large-scale application of clean energy conversion devices (i.e., fuel cells, metal-air batteries and water electrolysers). Herein, we present the construction of a three-dimensional cobalt sulfide/multi-heteroatom co-doped carbon composite as a trifunctional electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through one-step sulfidation of zeolitic-imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) using sulfur powder as a sulfur source. By virtue of the distinct periodic metal-nitrogen coordination structure and the abundant micropores within the ZIF precursor, sub-10 nm Co9S8 nanoparticles (NPs) are homogenously anchored on a Co, S and N multi-heteroatom co-doped carbon framework with a large specific surface area that exposes sufficient reactive sites for these electrocatalytic reactions. The optimized Co9S8/CoNSC exhibits outstanding ORR, OER and HER performance, comparable or even superior to those of commercial Pt/C and RuO2. The small Co9S8 NPs and Co-Nx species embedded in the carbon matrix cooperatively catalyze the OER and ORR, while the HER catalysis is mainly contributed by Co9S8 NPs. Furthermore, the Co9S8/CoNSC shows outstanding anti-poisoning capability towards sulfur species during ORR catalysis with no obvious activity degradation observed in 0.1 M KOH containing 50 μM SO32- species, significantly outperforming commercial Pt/C. The assembled rechargeable Zn-air battery using the Co9S8/CoNSC as a cathode shows a high power density (150 mW cm-2) and the assembled water electrolyzer only requires 1.585 V at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 when using this material as an anode and a cathode. This work provides an effective strategy to design and synthesize efficient, durable and anti-poisoning cobalt chalcogenide-based trifunctional electrocatalysts for the large-scale application of clean energy conversion devices.

Abstract
Transition-metal sulfide as a promising bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst alternative to scarce platinum-group metals has attracted much attention, but it suffers activity loss over time owing to poor structural/compositional stability during catalysis. Herein, we report a self-template method for preparing a two-dimensional cobalt sulfide holey sheet superstructure with hierarchical porosity followed by the encapsulation of thin iron-nitrogen-carbon as a protective layer. The iron-nitrogen-carbon layer to some degree precludes the phase transition of cobalt sulfide underneath and preserves the structural integrity during catalysis, therefore rendering an exceptional durability in terms of no obvious activity loss after 10,000 cycles of the accelerated durability test. It also noticeably enhances the intrinsic activity of cobalt sulfide and does not influence its exposure into the electrolyte, resulting in showing an extraordinary electrochemical performance in terms of a potential difference of 0.69 V for the overall oxygen redox. A rechargeable zinc-air battery assembled by a cobalt sulfide/iron-nitrogen-carbon air cathode delivers approximately 4.2 times higher power density than that without an iron-nitrogen-carbon layer and stably operates for 300 h with a high voltaic efficiency. This work gives a facile and effective strategy for improving the long-term durability of transition-metal sulfide electrocatalysts.

Abstract
Construction of high-efficiency, low cost and stable non-noble metal catalyst on air cathode is of great importance for design and assembly of rechargeable Zn-air battery. Eriochrome black T (EBT) has phenolic hydroxyl and -N=Ν- groups, which provides multiple coordination sites for metal ions. Herein, Co9S8 nanoclusters implanted in Co/Mn-S,N multi-doped porous carbon (Co9S8@Co/Mn-S,N-PC) are fabricated with the mixture (i.e. EBT, metal precursors and dicyandiamide) by a coordination regulated pyrolysis strategy. Specifically, EBT effectively chelates with the Co and Mn ions, resulting in multiple incorporation and fine modulation of the carbon electronic structures. Meanwhile, its sulfonic acid groups are reduced at such high temperature, accompanied by simultaneously embedding S element in the carbon, ultimately in situ forming Co9S8 nanoclusters. The Co9S8@Co/Mn-S,N-PC performs as an effective bifunctional oxygen catalyst, displaying a positive half-wave potential of 0.85 V and a large limiting current density of 5.89 mA cm-2 for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media, coupled with a small overpotential of 320 mV at 10 mA cm-2 towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER), outperforming commercial Pt/C and RuO2 catalysts, respectively. Furthermore, the assembled rechargeable Zn-air battery with Co9S8@Co/Mn-S,N-PC exhibits the much better charge/discharge performance and long-term durability (210 h, 630 cycles). This research opens an instructive avenue to develop high-efficient and stable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts in energy transformation and storage devices.

Abstract
Developing cost-effective, highly-active and robust electrocatalysts is of vital importance to supersede noble-metal ones for both hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) and oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs). Herein, a unique vanadium-mediated space confined strategy is reported to construct a composite structure involving Co/Co9S8 nanoparticles anchored on Co-N-doped porous carbon (VCS@NC) as bifunctional electrocatalysts toward HER and ORR. Benefitting from the ultrafine nanostructure, abundant Co-Nx active sites, large specific surface area and defect-rich carbon framework, the resultant VCS@NC exhibits unexceptionable HER catalytic activity, needing extremely low HER overpotentials in pH-universal media (alkaline: 117 mV, acid: 178 mV, neutral: 210 mV) at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, paralleling at least 100 h catalytic durability. Notably, the VCS@NC catalyst delivers high-efficiency ORR performance in alkaline solution, accompanied with a quite high half wave potential of 0.901 V, far overmatching the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Our research opens up novel insight into engineering highly-efficient multifunctional non-precious metal electrocatalysts by a metal-mediated space-confined strategy in energy storage and conversion system.

Abstract
Transition-metal sulfide is pursued for replacing scare platinum-group metals for oxygen electrocatalysis and is of great importance in developing low-cost, high-performance rechargeable metal-air batteries. We report herein a facile cationic-doping strategy for preparing nickel-doped cobalt sulfide embedded into a mesopore-rich hydrangea-like carbon nanoflower. Nickel cations are introduced to induce the formation of Co3+-active species and more oxygen vacancies due to higher electronegativity and smaller ionic radius, thereby strengthening the intrinsic activity for oxygen electrocatalysis. Moreover, hydrangea-like superstructure composed of interconnected carbon cages provides abundant accessible active sites and hierarchical porosity. As a result, it shows excellent catalytic performance with a superior mass activity for the oxygen reduction reaction to the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalyst and a low overpotential of 314 mV at 10 mA cm-2 for the oxygen evolution reaction. When used as an air cathode for the rechargeable Zn-air battery, it delivers a peak power density of 96.3 mW cm-2 and stably operates over 214 h. This work highlights the importance of cationic doping in strengthening the electrocatalytic performance of 3d-transition-metal chalcogenides.
