Abstract
In recent years, solar-driven photothermal water evaporation technology for seawater desalination and wastewater treatment has developed rapidly, which is of great significance for addressing the issue of freshwater scarcity. However, due to the high costs associated with the manufacturing, maintenance, and operation of such devices, their application remains challenging in remote and resource-scarce regions. Due to its excellent light absorption capability in the near-infrared region, high hydrophilicity, and stable chemical properties, coupled with the low cost of recycling waste carbonized polyphenylene sulfide, this material is an excellent choice as a photothermal material for solar-driven water evaporation devices. Ordinary wood in nature usually has a highly regenerative porous structure, which is a natural water transport channel that facilitates the transport of water from the bottom to the top, allowing it to be rapidly converted into vapor. Based on this characteristic, this article innovatively proposes to prepare waste polyphenylene sulfide from porous carbonized materials (KCP) as the photothermal conversion material for novel photothermal water evaporation devices, achieving solar-driven water evaporation. This material efficiently facilitates the conversion between solar and thermal energies and exhibits excellent hydrophilicity, thereby enabling the rapid utilization of absorbed solar energy for water evaporation on the surface of the evaporator. In this study, a porous carbonized polyphenylene sulfide photothermal water evaporator (KCP-wood) was fabricated by using freeze-drying and in situ coating to load the photothermal conversion material onto a wood substrate. Under simulated one-sun irradiation, this evaporator achieved a water evaporation rate of 2.41 kg m-2 h-1 and a photothermal conversion efficiency of 91.3%. Additionally, a systematic study was conducted on the photothermal performance of various light-water evaporators, encompassing photothermal conversion efficiency, stability, thermal conductivity, and anti-fouling capabilities. Finally, the practical performance of the light-water evaporator under various environmental conditions was validated, demonstrating its excellent stability and durability. It is capable of effectively applying to high-efficiency water resource utilization and solar energy conversion fields.

Abstract
In this work, we analyzed the effects of mineral scaling on the performance of a 3D interfacial solar evaporator, with a focus on the cations relevant to lithium recovery from brackish water. The field has been rapidly moving toward resource recovery applications from brines with higher cation concentrations. However, the potential complications caused by common minerals in these brines other than NaCl have been largely overlooked. Therefore, in this study, we thoroughly examined the effects of two common cations (calcium and magnesium) on the long-term solar evaporation performance of a 3D graphene oxide stalk. The 3D stalk can achieve an evaporation flux as high as 17.8 kg m-2 h-1 under one-sun illumination, and accumulation of NaCl on the stalk surface has no impact. However, the presence of CaCl2 and MgCl2 significantly reduces the evaporative flux even in solutions lacking scale-forming anions. A close examination of scale formation during long-term evaporation experiments revealed that CaCl2 and MgCl2 tend to precipitate out within the stalk, thus blocking water transport through the stalk and significantly dropping the evaporation rates. These findings imply that research attention is needed to modify and optimize the internal water transport channels for 3D evaporators. Additionally, we emphasize the importance of testing realistic mixtures─including prominent divalent cations─ and testing long-term operations in interfacial solar evaporation research and investigating approaches to mitigate the negative impacts of divalent cations.

Abstract
Interfacial solar steam generation (ISSG) employed for seawater desalination and wastewater purification shows great promise to alleviate global freshwater scarcity. However, simultaneous optimization of water transfer direction in a cost-effective and reliable ISSG to balance thermal localization, salt accumulation, and resistance to oilfouling represents a rare feat. Herein, inspired by seabird beaks for unidirectional water transfer, eco-friendly and cost-effective plant extracts, sodium alginate, and tannic acid, are selected for crafting an innovative Sodium Alginate-Tannic Acid Hemispheric Evaporator (STHE). The STHE aligned with centripetally tapered channels ensures one-directional water flow and effectively inhibits downward heat transfer, thereby boosting energy efficiency. Additionally, the integration of one-way water supply in tapered channels with interfacial evaporation of STHE, mimicking plant transpiration, collaboratively facilitates upward water transfer for a reliable solar-driven water evaporation rate of ≈2.26 kg m-2 h-1 under one sun irradiation. Even in a brine of 15.0 wt % solution, no salt crystals are observed on the surface of STHE. Hemispheric structure and superhydrophilicity are conducive to oil repellence. This work provides pivotal inspiration for constructing next-generation solar generators of high-efficiency, salt-tolerance, and anti-oil-fouling.

Abstract
Solar-driven interfacial evaporation is an efficient approach to addressing water scarcity due to its environmental sustainability. However, the prolonged use of solar evaporators causes microbial contamination from wastewater. Inspired by the antifouling properties of polydopamine, we develop a series of mono- and dual-metal-loaded poly(norepinephrine) (PNE) nanoparticles by pre-doping multiple metal ions. Metal doping enhances the photothermal conversion efficiency (∼60%) of PNE by reducing the energy bandgap and imparts antimicrobial properties. Cu2+-loaded PNE (Cu-5) combined with laser achieves a 99.72% bactericidal rate against both E. coli and S. aureus. The Cu-5-coated cellulose membrane (Cu-5@CM) realized an evaporation rate of 2.21 kg m-2 h-1 under one sun with an evaporation efficiency of 97.4%. Cu-5@CM exhibits remarkable anti-biofouling properties, maintaining its surface integrity and evaporation performance even after 15 days of immersion in a bacterial environment. Its stable evaporation rate and long-lasting antimicrobial performance offer a promising solution to the biofouling challenges in seawater desalination.

Abstract
The environmental friendliness, economic feasibility, and high efficiency of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) render them as highly promising candidates for corrosion inhibitors. The present study proposed the fabrication of nitrogen- and sulfur-codoped CQDs via an one-step hydrothermal method using l-cysteine and 4-aminosalicylic acid as precursors. The structure, particle size, and surface ligands of the prepared CQDs were determined through spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy characterization. Subsequently, the inhibition performance of the CQDs on carbon steel in a 0.5 M sulfuric acid solution was evaluated through weight loss measurement, electrochemical methods, and surface analysis. The CQDs exhibited remarkable inhibition efficiencies of 97.9% at 293 K and 98.9% at 313 K, with a concentration of 150 ppm. In addition, the obtained CQDs demonstrated a combined physisorption and chemisorption adsorption behavior, which complied with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. These findings provide insight into the inhibition mechanism and highlight the potential of codoped CQDs for corrosion mitigation applications in acidic environments.

Abstract
Solar-to-thermal conversion is a direct and effective way to absorb sunlight for heat via the rational design and control of photothermal materials. However, when exposed to water-existed conditions, the conventional solar-to-thermal performance may experience severe degradation owing to the high specific heat capacity of water. To tackle with the challenge, the water-repellent function is introduced to construct superhydrophobic solar-to-thermal materials (SSTMs) for achieving stable heating, and even, for creating new application possibilities under water droplets, sweat, seawater, and ice environments. An in-depth review of cutting-edge research of SSTMs is given, focusing on synergetic functions, typical construction methods, and cutting-edge potentials based on water medium. Moreover, the current challenges and future prospects based on SSTMs are also carefully discussed.

Abstract
Adding corrosion inhibitors is considered to be a cost-effective way to inhibit metal corrosion. In this study, we report the synthesis of a bi-mannich base corrosion inhibitor (BMT) with an impressive inhibition efficiency on carbon steel in H2S and HCl co-existing solution. At the BMT concentration of 9 ppm, the inhibition efficiency (η) of 96.9%, 97.6% and 98.0% were determined by weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, respectively. The adsorption of BMT on the carbon steel surface follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and the calculated free energy indicates that the adsorption is a spontaneous process. This research also delves into understanding the adsorption behavior and corrosion inhibition mechanism of BMT on carbon steel surfaces through quantum chemistry calculations. The results of this study provide guidance for the application of BMT as a corrosion inhibitor in sour and acid environments.

Abstract
Superhydrophobic surfaces exhibit considerable potential in road anti-icing applications due to their unique water-repellent properties. However, the nanorough structure of superhydrophobic coatings is highly susceptible to degradation under wheel rolling in practical applications. To maintain effective hydrophobicity under prolonged exposure to wheel rolling, a multilayer superhydrophobic anti-icing coating was developed. This coating utilizes antifreeze protein (AFP)-modified emulsified asphalt as the substrate with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and silicon carbide (SiC) as surface coatings. Experimental results indicate that the inclusion of AFP enhances the viscosity of the emulsified asphalt, thereby stabilizing the nanorough structure of the coating. Even after 100 cycles of sandpaper grinding and 500 wheel rolls, the coating maintains robust hydrophobic properties. Moreover, when the coating is worn away by long-term high-strength loads, the exposed AFP-modified emulsified asphalt layer continues to exhibit effective anti-icing capabilities, significantly prolonging the complete freezing time of water droplets on its surface. Additionally, the incorporation of CNTs and SiC enhances the photothermal conversion performance, further improving the anti-icing efficiency of the coating under light irradiation. Overall, this coating shows promise for application in road anti-icing strategies.

Abstract
The severe deterioration of the marine ecosystem significantly negatively impacts the performance of solar-driven steam generation (SSG) and the quality of the obtained freshwater. Herein, a bifunctional Ag/MgFe2O4@SCW reactor with a sandwich structure is designed for efficient SSG and Cr(VI) reduction, which is constructed via in situ deposit Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and MgFe2O4 onto surface carbonized wood (SCW). Owing to the advanced sandwich structure and strong interfacial interactions between each component, an ultra-high evaporation rate of 1.55 kg m-2 h-1 and the efficiency of 88.6% are achieved using Ag/MgFe2O4@SCW under 1 sun. The system exhibits the long-term evaporation performance in the simulated sewage and strong acid/base solutions along with water-harvesting capacity in outdoor solar desalination. The quality of distilled water after desalination of actual seawater and NaCl solutions with different concentrations meets the WHO-recommended drinkable water standards. Furthermore, Ag/MgFe2O4@SCW shows outstanding antibacterial property, self-desalting capacity, as well as reusability and structure stability. Most importantly, the fast carrier separation endows Ag/MgFe2O4@SCW with superior photocatalytic activity and Cr(VI) photoreduction of up to 96.1% after 180 min of illumination. The bifunctional Ag/MgFe2O4@SCW reactor provides an advanced synergistic mechanism for improving SSG and photocatalytic performance, while being promising for solar-powered production of clean water.

Abstract
Solar-driven water evaporation, as an environmentally benign pathway, provides an opportunity for alleviating global clean water scarcity. However, the rapidly generated interfacial steam and localized heating could cause increased salt concentration and accumulation, deteriorating the evaporation performance and long-term stability. Herein, a novel superhydrophobic sand solar (FPPSD) evaporator with a core-shell structure was proposed through interface functionalization for continuous photothermal desalination. The collective behavior essence of the sand aggregate gave itself micron-scale self-organized pores and configurable shapes, generating desirable capillary force and supplying effective water-pumping channels. More importantly, combining the dopamine, polypyrrole (PPy), and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PFDTS) through π-π conjugation and multiple hydrogen bonding effects gave the FPPSD evaporator with stable superhydrophobic property and highly efficient photothermal conversion capability. Therefore, the FPPSD evaporator showed a continuous and stable photothermal performance even after 96 h continuous evaporation under 3-sun irradiation for 10 wt% saline solution, among the best values in the reported works of literature, demonstrating its excellent salt-resistance stability. Furthermore, this novel FPPSD evaporator displayed outstanding environmental stability that kept its initial water transport capacity even after being treated under harsh conditions for 30 days. With excellent salt-resistance ability and stable environmental stability, the FPPSD evaporator will provide an attractive platform for sustainable solar-driven water management.

Abstract
Photothermal materials that can convert solar energy into heat energy through photothermal conversion have attracted extensive attention, but these materials are easily polluted by the environment. Here, we propose a simple and effective strategy for constructing photothermal superhydrophobic cotton fabrics with self-cleaning ability. The PDA@PEI@GA@Ag@PDMS-coated cotton fabric can achieve good superhydrophobicity (water contact angle: 159.6°) by a simple dipping method and mussel-inspired dopamine surface modification, which is regulated by the mass of dopamine, the mass of silver nitrate, and the concentration of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The coated cotton fabric has good physical and chemical stability. Meanwhile, the coated cotton fabric has excellent self-cleaning and antifouling properties. The superhydrophobic PDA@PEI@GA@Ag@PDMS fabric exhibits excellent and stable photothermal properties, with the surface temperature reaching 70.4 °C under simulated sunlight with a current of 20 A. This photothermal superhydrophobic fabric with self-cleaning properties is expected to be applied in the field of photothermal conversion.

Abstract
Seawater desalination powered by solar energy is the most environmentally and economical solution in responding to the global water and energy crisis. However, solar desalination has been negatively impacted by intermittent sun radiation that alternates between day and night. In this study, sugarcane bagasse (SCB) was recycled via the pyrolysis process to biochar as a cost-effective solar absorber. Besides, polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a phase change material was encapsulated in the abundant pore structure of biochar to store the thermal energy for 24 hours of continuous steam generation. The BDB/1.5 PEG evaporator exhibited an evaporation rate of 2.11 kg m-2 h-1 (98.1% efficiency) under 1 sun irradiation. Additionally, the BDB/1.5 PEG evaporator incorporated by the TEC1-12706 module for continuous steam and electricity generation with a power density of 320.41 mW m-2. Moreover, 10 continuous hours of evaporation were applied to the composite demonstrating outstanding stability. The composite exhibited high water purification efficiency through solar desalination due to the abundant functional groups on the biochar surface. Finally, the resulting low-cost and highly efficient PCM-based absorber can be used on a wide scale to produce fresh water and energy.

Abstract
Taking abundant and sustainable solar energy as the only energy source, solar-powered interface evaporation has been regarded as a promising method to alleviate the pressure of freshwater shortage. However, the uptake of clean water from brine is constantly accompanied by evaporation of water and condensation of vapor, which inevitably generates salt solid, preventing further continuous and stable evaporation. The most direct method is to fabricate a photothermal material with salt self-resistance by using the reflux of salt ions. Here, a superhydrophilic interconnected biomass carbon absorber (SBCA) is prepared by freeze-drying and carbonization, realizing strong liquid pumping, and self-blocking salt. In combination with superior broadband light absorption (94.91%), high porosity (95.9%), superhydrophilicity, and excellent thermal localization, an evaporation device with excellent evaporation rate (2.45 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 kW m-2) is successfully proposed. In the meantime, the porous skeleton and rapid water transport can enhance the diffusion of salt ions and slow down the rate of salt deposition. As a result, no salt deposition is found on the SBCA surface after continuous irradiation at 1 kW m-2 for 15 h. The design can provide a convenient and low-cost efficient strategy for solar steam generators to address clean water acquisition.

Abstract
In recent years, solar seawater desalination has been considered to be a promising and cost-effective technique to produce clean sources for water treatment and water deficiency. In addition, this technique shows high photothermal conversion efficiency by solar collectors to transfer solar energy into heat and the transformation of molecules in the capillaries of solar evaporators. In this study, we report the preparation of graphene-supported MIL-125 with polyurethane foam (MGPU) for solar steam generation. We modified MGPU by using the plasmonic nanoparticles of Ag and a polymer of polyaniline to increase the evaporation rate. Polyurethane foam can float on the surface of water and self-pump water by its hydrophilic porous structure, superior thermal insulation capabilities, and easy fabrication. MIL-125 has a high salt rejection and higher water permeability. It can reduce the affinity between water molecules and the pore surface of membrane, making it simple for water molecules to move through the pores. GO is a great alternative for steam generation applications since it exhibits broad-band light. The strong solar absorption, photothermal conversion efficiency, and photoreaction efficiency are enhanced by the use of silver nanoparticles in the photoreaction. The salt resistance capability is enhanced in saline water in the presence of polyaniline in a composite. Under one solar irradiation, the Ag/PANI/GO@MIL-125 (Ag-PMG) nanocomposite demonstrates an average 1.26 kg m2 h-1 rate of evaporation and an efficiency as high as 90%. The composite exhibits remarkable stability and durability after more than 10 cycles of use without a noticeable decrease in activity. In addition, the composite exhibits excellent organic dye removal from contaminated water and generates pure condensed freshwater. The antibacterial photoactivity of the photocatalysts was examined against B. subtilis and E. coli. The results demonstrate that Ag-PMG shows higher antibacterial activity than MIL-125 and PMG. It was shown that the presence of rGO, PANI, and Ag in the sample enhances the antimicrobial activity.

Abstract
Photothermally assisted superhydrophobic materials play an important role in a variety of applications, such as oil purification, waste oil collection, and solar desalination, due to their facile fabrication, low-cost, flexibility, and tunable thermal conversion. However, the current widely used superhydrophobic sponges with photothermal properties are usually impaired by a high loading content of photothermal agents (e.g., gold or silver nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes), low photothermal efficiency, and require harmful processes for modification. Here, a one-pot, simple composite consisting of two-dimensional (2D) selenium (Se) nanosheets (NSs) and commercially used melamine sponge (MS) is rationally designed and successfully fabricated by a facile dip-coating method via physical adsorption between 2D Se NSs and MS. The loading content of 2D Se NSs on the skeleton of the MS can be well controlled by dipping cycle. The results demonstrate that after the modification of 2D Se NSs on the MS, the wettability transition from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity can be easily achieved, even at a very low loading of 2D Se NSs, and the highly stable photothermal conversion of the as-fabricated composites can be realized with a maximum temperature of 111 ± 3.2 °C due to the excellent photothermal effect of 2D Se NSs. It is anticipated that this composite will afford new design strategies for multifunctional porous structures for versatile applications, such as high-performance solar desalination and photothermal sterilization.

Abstract
Solar energy-based steam generation holds immense potential to tackle the problem of 1.1 billion people lacking access to freshwater and 2.7 billion experiencing freshwater scarcity at least one month a year. Efficient, portable, and universal photothermal materials are required for popularity of solar-driven evaporation systems. Herein, a facile one-pot process based on solution-processed vapor phase polymerization is adopted to fabricate polypyrrole-coated cellulose nanocrystals (CNC-PPy). The CNC-PPy dispersed in water is used as an ink (CNC-PPy ink) to create photothermal layers. The developed ink is readily laminated on diverse substrates utilizing a common paintbrush that firmly attached without any delamination after drying. The optimized cellulose membrane (6 coating cycles) presents an excellent evaporation rate of 1.96 Kg m-2 h-1 with corresponding light-to-vapor efficiency of 88.92 % at 1 sun. In addition, the CNC-PPy display excellent antibacterial and antifouling properties in powder and laminated forms against E. coli and S. aureus.

Abstract
Solar desalination has been recognized as an emerging strategy for solving the pressing global freshwater crisis. However, salt crystallization at the photothermal interface frequently causes evaporator failure. In addition, arbitrary discharge of concentrated brine produced during desalination results in potential ecological impacts as well as wastage of valuable minerals. In the present work, a suspended-type evaporator (STEs) constructed using Janus fibrous mats is reported. The fibrous structure wicks brine to the evaporation layer and the salt gets confined in the evaporation layer until crystallization for zero liquid discharge due to the suspended design. Enhanced evaporation is observed because STEs have an additional low-resistance vapor escape path directly from the evaporation layer to the atmosphere compared to traditional floating Janus evaporators. Moreover, owing to the drastically different wettability on both sides, the evaporator allows salt crystallization only on the hydrophilic bottom layer, thus eliminating salt accumulation at the hydrophobic photothermal interface. With this unique structural design, the proposed evaporator not only maintains a high evaporation rate of 1.94 kg m-2 h-1 , but also demonstrates zero liquid discharged salt resistance and ideal recovery of the mineral in brine.

Abstract
To achieve high solar energy utilization efficiency, photothermal materials with broadband absorption of sunlight and high conversion efficiency are becoming a fast-growing research focus. Inspired by the forest structure with efficient sunlight utilization, we designed and fabricated a graphene film consisting of densely arranged porous graphene though laser scribing on polybenzoxazine resin (poly(Ph-ddm)). This hierarchical structure significantly reduced the light reflection of graphene as a 2D material. With a combination of advanced photothermal conversion properties of graphene, the 3D structured graphene film, named forest-like laser-induced graphene (forest-like LIG), was endowed with a very high light absorption of 99.0% over the whole wavelength range of sunlight as well as advanced light-to-heat conversion performance (reaching up to 87.7 °C within 30 s under the illumination of simulated sunlight and showing an equilibrium temperature of 90.7 ± 0.4 °C). As a further benefit of its superhydrophobicity, a photothermal actuator with quick actuated response and high motion velocity, as well as a solar-driven interfacial desalination membrane with durable salt-rejecting properties and high solar evaporation efficiencies, was demonstrated.

Abstract
Membrane separation is able to efficiently remove pathogens like bacteria and viruses from water based on size exclusion. However, absolute and fast removal of pathogens requires highly permeable but selective membranes. Herein, we report the preparation of such advanced membranes using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as one-dimensional building blocks. We first disperse CNTs with the help of an amphiphilic block copolymer, poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)-block-polystyrene (PDMAEMA-b-PS, abbreviated as BCP). The PS blocks adsorb on the surface of CNTs via the π-π interaction, while the PDMAEMA blocks are solvated, thus forming homogeneous and stable CNT dispersions. We then spray the CNT dispersions on porous substrates, producing composite membranes with assembled CNT layers as the selective layers. We demonstrate that the optimized membrane shows 100% rejection to phage viruses and bacteria (Escherichia coli) while giving a water permeance up to ∼3300 L m-2 h-1 bar-1. The performance of the resultant BCP/CNT membrane outperforms that of state-of-the-art membranes and commercial membranes. The BCP/CNT membrane can be used for multiple runs and regenerated by water rinsing. Membrane modules assembled from large-area membrane sheets sustain the capability of absolute and fast removal of viruses and bacteria.

Abstract
Photothermally assisted superhydrophobic sponges play a vital role in the fields of waste oil collection, oil purification, and solar desalination. However, the widely reported superhydrophobic sponges with photothermal efficiency usually suffer from a post-/premodification process of harmful materials, high loading content of photothermal agents, and low photothermal efficiency. Herein, an MXene-based melamine sponge (MS) was facilely fabricated by hydrogen bonding interaction between the amino groups on the skeleton of the MS and the polar groups on the surface of the as-exfoliated 2D MXene Ti3C2Tx nanosheets. Interestingly, the as-fabricated MXene sponge exhibits excellent hydrophobicity and high photothermal efficiency under an extremely low loading of MXene Ti3C2Tx nanosheets (0.1 wt %). Moreover, the highly hydrophobic sponge also possesses a high oil absorption capacity as high as 176 times of its own weight and keeps stable under multiple absorption/desorption cycling tests. Surprisingly, the surface temperature of the MXene sponge can quickly reach 47 °C under illumination and has good reproducibility during multiple light on/off cycles. The excellent photothermal performance and large oil absorption capacity of the MXene sponge endow the highly hydrophobic sponge with fast solvent evaporation speed and high-purity waste oil collection (99.7 wt % dichloromethane) under illumination, which holds great promise for oil/water separation, leaked oil collection, and photo-driven waste oil collection and purification applications. It is envisioned that this work can open a new strategy for new designs of 3D multifunctional sponges for high-performance waste oil collection and purification.

Abstract
Sufficient and clean freshwater is still out of reach for billions of people around the world. Solar desalination from brine is regarded as one of the most promising proposals to solve this severe crisis. However, most of the reported evaporators to date still suffer from the decreasing evaporation rate caused by salt crystallization accumulated on their surface. Here, inspired by the vascular tissue structure, transpiration, and antifouling function of reed leaves, we design biomimetic hierarchical nanofibrous aerogels with parallel-arranged vessels and hydrophobic surfaces for highly efficient and salt-resistant solar desalination. Foldable vessel walls and flexible silica nanofibers give the reed leaf-inspired nanofiber aerogels (R-NFAs) excellent mechanical properties and enable them to withstand repeated compression. Besides, the R-NFAs can efficiently absorb sunlight (light absorption efficiency: 94.8%) and evaporate the brine to vapor, similar to reed leaves (evaporation rate: 1.25 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun). More importantly, enabled by the hydrophobic surfaces and parallel-arranged vessels, the R-NFAs can work stably in high-concentration brine (saturated, 26.3 wt %) under high-intensity light (up to 6 sun), demonstrating potent salt resistance. It is expected that R-NFAs with combined antisalt pore and surface structures will provide a designed concept for salt-resistant solar desalination.

Abstract
This paper reports the fabrication of photothermal cryogels for freshwater production via the solar-driven evaporation of seawater. Photothermal cryogels were prepared via in situ oxidative polymerization of pyrrole with ammonium persulfate on preformed poly(sodium acrylate) (PSA) cryogels. We found that the pyrrole concentration used in the fabrication process has a significant effect on the final PSA/PPy cryogels (PPCs), causing the as-formed polypyrrole (PPy) layer on the PPC to evolve from nanoparticles to lamellar sheets and to consolidated thin films. PPC fabricated using the lowest pyrrole concentration (i.e., PPC10) displays the best solar-evaporation efficiency compared to the other samples, which is further improved by switching the operative mode from floating to standing. Specifically, in the latter case, the apparent solar evaporation rate and solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency reach 1.41 kg m-2 h-1 and 96.9%, respectively, due to the contribution of evaporation from the exposed lateral surfaces. The distillate obtained from the condensed vapor, generated via solar evaporation of a synthetic seawater through PPC10, shows an at least 99.99% reduction of Na while all the other elements are reduced to a subppm level. We attribute the superior solar evaporation and desalination performance of PPC10 to its (i) higher photoabsorption efficiency, (ii) higher heat localization effect, (iii) open porous structure that facilitates vapor removal, (iv) rough pore surface that increases the surface area for light absorption and water evaporation, and (v) higher water-absorption capacity to ensure efficient water replenishment to the evaporative sites. It is anticipated that the gained know-how from this study would offer insightful guidelines to better designs of polymer-based 3D photothermal materials for solar evaporation as well as for other emerging solar-related applications.

Abstract
Paper-based analytical devices (PADs) have emerged as a promising approach to point-of-care (POC) detection applications in biomedical and clinical diagnosis owing to their advantages, including cost-effectiveness, ease of use, and rapid responses as well as for being equipment-free, disposable, and user-friendly. However, the overall sensitivity of PADs still remains weak, posing a challenge for biosensing scientists exploiting them in clinical applications. This review comprehensively summarizes the current applicable potential of PADs, focusing on total signal-amplification strategies that have been applied widely in PADs involving colorimetry, luminescence, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, photoacoustic, photothermal, and photoelectrochemical methods as well as nucleic acid-mediated PAD modifications. The advances in signal-amplification strategies in terms of signal-enhancing principles, sensitivity, and time reactions are discussed in detail to provide an overview of these approaches to using PADs in biosensing applications. Furthermore, a comparison of these methods summarizes the potential for scientists to develop superior PADs. This review serves as a useful inside look at the current progress and prospective directions in using PADs for clinical diagnostics and provides a better source of reference for further investigations, as well as innovations, in the POC diagnostics field.

Abstract
Water desalination via solar-driven interfacial evaporation is one of the most essential technologies to limit the problem of global freshwater scarcity. Searching for a highly efficient, stable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective solar-absorber material that can collect the full solar spectrum is critically important for solar steam generation. This study reports the development of a new solar thermal evaporation system based on plasmonic copper oxide/reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The silver nanoparticles in the composite exhibit a very strong solar absorption. Also, rGO and CuO nanoparticles offer excellent thermal absorptivity. Polyurethane was used as the support and as a thermal insulator. Moreover, filter paper was used for fast water delivery to the surface of the solar absorber. Ag/CuO-rGO nanocomposite is manifested to be one of the most efficient solar-absorbers reported to date for solar desalination which exhibits an average 2.6 kg m-2 h-1 evaporation rate with solar thermal efficiency up to 92.5% under 1 sun irradiation. Furthermore, the composite has excellent stability and durability as it displays stable evaporation rates for more than 10 repeated cycles in use, with no significant decrease in the activity. Besides, the successful removal of various organic dyes from contaminated water is also revealed, resulting in the production of clean condensed freshwater. Finally, this work commences a new avenue of synthesizing cost-effective thermal absorbers based on metal oxides.

Abstract
Photothermal desalination is a promising approach for seawater purification by harvesting solar energy. Titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx MXene) membranes have been regarded as potential materials for photothermal desalination by virtue of their excellent light-to-heat conversion. However, achieving a well-balanced synergy between high evaporation rate and good salt resistance remains a significant challenge due to their limited solar absorption and inferior stability. Herein, we report a self-assembled flexible porphyrin-Ti3C2Tx MXene Janus membrane (Janus PMX membrane) for dual-functional enabled photothermal desalination. The self-assembly of porphyrin on MXene not only effectively creates a favorable hydrophobic surface but also simultaneously enables efficient solar utilization. The significant interactions and charge redistribution between MXene and porphyrin lead to a stable hydrophobic/hydrophilic Janus structure with synergistically enhanced photothermal conversion. As a result, the Janus PMX membrane demonstrates highly efficient water pumping, heat localization, vapor generation, and salt resistance during photothermal desalination. This work presents an effective and facile strategy toward advancing a well-performing MXene membrane for efficient seawater desalination.
