Wireless Technologies in Flexible and Wearable Sensing: From Materials Design, System Integration to Applications

Wireless and wearable sensors attract considerable interest in personalized healthcare by providing a unique approach for remote, noncontact, and continuous monitoring of various health-related signals without interference with daily life. Recent advances in wireless technologies and wearable sensors have promoted practical applications due to their significantly improved characteristics, such as reduction in size and thickness, enhancement in flexibility and stretchability, and improved conformability to the human body. Currently, most researches focus on active materials and structural designs for wearable sensors, with just a few exceptions reflecting on the technologies for wireless data transmission. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art wireless technologies and related studies on empowering wearable sensors. The emerging functional nanomaterials utilized for designing unique wireless modules are highlighted, which include metals, carbons, and MXenes. Additionally, the review outlines the system-level integration of wireless modules with flexible sensors, spanning from novel design strategies for enhanced conformability to efficient transmitting data wirelessly. Furthermore, the review introduces representative applications for remote and noninvasive monitoring of physiological signals through on-skin and implantable wireless flexible sensing systems. Finally, the challenges, perspectives, and unprecedented opportunities for wireless and wearable sensors are discussed.

Dual-Circularly Polarized and Flexible Metasurface Antenna Based on Graphene Assembled Film for Satellite Communications

Traditional metal materials used in electronic devices are often problematic due to issues like bending resistance, oxidation leading to failure, and environmental pollution. To address these challenges, microwave electronic devices are constantly casting around for metal substitute materials with additional characteristics such as flexibility, anticorrosive, and eco-friendly. However, finding suitable materials that are accessible for radiofrequency (RF) applications is a difficult yet promising task. Consequently, a high-performance metasurface antenna based on highly conductive graphene films for satellite communications is developed in this paper. The proposed graphene assembled films (GAFs) have a conductivity of up to 1.13 × 106 S/m. Simulation and measurement results confirm the excellent performance of the designed antenna. Comparative experiments are also conducted on salt spray and mechanical bending between GAF antenna patterns and copper foil counterparts, further demonstrating the outstanding flexible property and corrosion resistance performance of prepared GAFs.

Soft Sensors and Actuators for Wearable Human-Machine Interfaces

Haptic human-machine interfaces (HHMIs) combine tactile sensation and haptic feedback to allow humans to interact closely with machines and robots, providing immersive experiences and convenient lifestyles. Significant progress has been made in developing wearable sensors that accurately detect physical and electrophysiological stimuli with improved softness, functionality, reliability, and selectivity. In addition, soft actuating systems have been developed to provide high-quality haptic feedback by precisely controlling force, displacement, frequency, and spatial resolution. In this Review, we discuss the latest technological advances of soft sensors and actuators for the demonstration of wearable HHMIs. We particularly focus on highlighting material and structural approaches that enable desired sensing and feedback properties necessary for effective wearable HHMIs. Furthermore, promising practical applications of current HHMI technology in various areas such as the metaverse, robotics, and user-interactive devices are discussed in detail. Finally, this Review further concludes by discussing the outlook for next-generation HHMI technology.

RFID-based sensing in smart packaging for food applications: A review

The global pandemic COVID-19 has led to an increase in the number of people purchasing food online, which has brought to a higher demand on the food supply chain. Such as the need to collect more information related to food safety and quality in real-time. Strengthening management of food logistics information flow can reduce food loss and waste and bring better quality and safety of food to consumers. In this review, the importance and applicability of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology to smart food packaging are described. This study emphasizes the recent advancement of the RFID tags in humidity, temperature, gas, pH, integrity, and traceability sensor applications in connection with food packaging. RFID sensors are more suitable for smart packaging both in terms of sensing ability and data transmission. A simpler, low-cost, more robust and less power-demanding sensors network is the development direction of smart packaging in the future. Chipless RFID sensors have the potential to achieve these functions. But it still faces many challenges to be overcome. For example, biocompatible, cost, reading range, multi-tag collision, multi-parameter sensors, recycling issues, security and privacy of RFID system should be solved.

Polypyrrole Nanomaterials: Structure, Preparation and Application

In the past decade, nanostructured polypyrrole (PPy) has been widely studied because of its many specific properties, which have obvious advantages over bulk-structured PPy. This review outlines the main structures, preparation methods, physicochemical properties, potential applications, and future prospects of PPy nanomaterials. The preparation approaches include the soft micellar template method, hard physical template method and templateless method. Due to their excellent electrical conductivity, biocompatibility, environmental stability and reversible redox properties, PPy nanomaterials have potential applications in the fields of energy storage, biomedicine, sensors, adsorption and impurity removal, electromagnetic shielding, and corrosion resistant. Finally, the current difficulties and future opportunities in this research area are discussed.

Recent progress in self-powered multifunctional e-skin for advanced applications

Electronic skin (e-skin), new generation of flexible wearable electronic devices, has characteristics including flexibility, thinness, biocompatibility with broad application prospects, and a crucial place in future wearable electronics. With the increasing demand for wearable sensor systems, the realization of multifunctional e-skin with low power consumption or even autonomous energy is urgently needed. The latest progress of multifunctional self-powered e-skin for applications in physiological health, human-machine interaction (HMI), virtual reality (VR), and artificial intelligence (AI) is presented here. Various energy conversion effects for the driving energy problem of multifunctional e-skin are summarized. An overview of various types of self-powered e-skins, including single-effect e-skins and multifunctional coupling-effects e-skin systems is provided, where the aspects of material preparation, device assembly, and output signal analysis of the self-powered multifunctional e-skin are described. In the end, the existing problems and prospects in this field are also discussed.

A Wearable Electrochemical Gas Sensor for Ammonia Detection

The next future strategies for improved occupational safety and health management could largely benefit from wearable and Internet of Things technologies, enabling the real-time monitoring of health-related and environmental information to the wearer, to emergency responders, and to inspectors. The aim of this study is the development of a wearable gas sensor for the detection of NH₃ at room temperature based on the organic semiconductor poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), electrochemically deposited iridium oxide particles, and a hydrogel film. The hydrogel composition was finely optimised to obtain self-healing properties, as well as the desired porosity, adhesion to the substrate, and stability in humidity variations. Its chemical structure and morphology were characterised by infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, respectively, and were found to play a key role in the transduction process and in the achievement of a reversible and selective response. The sensing properties rely on a potentiometric-like mechanism that significantly differs from most of the state-of-the-art NH₃ gas sensors and provides superior robustness to the final device. Thanks to the reliability of the analytical response, the simple two-terminal configuration and the low power consumption, the PEDOT:PSS/IrOx Ps/hydrogel sensor was realised on a flexible plastic foil and successfully tested in a wearable configuration with wireless connectivity to a smartphone. The wearable sensor showed stability to mechanical deformations and good analytical performances, with a sensitivity of 60 ± 8 μA decade⁻¹ in a wide concentration range (17–7899 ppm), which includes the safety limits set by law for NH₃ exposure.

Development of radio-frequency identification (RFID) sensors suitable for smart-monitoring applications in sewer systems

Sanitary and stormwater sewers are buried assets that play important roles in the prevention of diseases and the reduction of health risks for our societies. Due to their hidden nature, these assets are not frequently assessed and maintained to optimal conditions. The lack of maintenance can cause sewer blockages and overflows that result in the release of pathogens into the environment. For cities, monitoring sewer conditions on a large-scale can be costly, time-consuming, and labor-intensive if using current low-throughput technologies, such as dye testing or closed-circuit television. Alternatively, smart sensor systems can provide low-cost, high-throughput, and automatic data-driven features for real-time monitoring applications. In this study, we developed ultrahigh-frequency radio-frequency identification (UHF RFID)-based sensors that are flushable and suitable for sanitary and stormwater pipes quick surveys. 3D printed RFID sensors were designed to float at the water-air interface and minimize the water interference to RF signal communications. The optimal detection range was also determined to support the design and installation of the reader in various utility holes. Field trials demonstrated that the UHF RFID system is a low-cost, high-throughput, and robust solution for monitoring blockage, illicit-connection, and water flow in sewer networks.

Ruthenium Decorated Polypyrrole Nanoparticles for Highly Sensitive Hydrogen Gas Sensors Using Component Ratio and Protonation Control

Despite being highly flammable at lower concentrations and causing suffocation at higher concentrations, hydrogen gas continues to play an important role in various industrial processes. Therefore, an appropriate monitoring system is crucial for processes that use hydrogen. In this study, we found a nanocomposite comprising of ruthenium nanoclusters decorated on carboxyl polypyrrole nanoparticles (Ru_CPPy) to be successful in detecting hydrogen gas through a simple sonochemistry method. We found that the morphology and density control of the ruthenium component increased the active surface area to the target analyte (hydrogen molecule). Carboxyl polypyrrole (CPPy) in the nanocomposite was protonated to increase the charge transfer rate during gas detection. This material-based sensor electrode was highly sensitive (down to 0.5 ppm) toward hydrogen gas and had a fast response and recovery time under ambient conditions. The sensing ability of the electrode was maintained up to 15 days without structure deformations.

Radio-Frequency/Microwave Gas Sensors Using Conducting Polymer

In this review, the advances in radio-frequency (RF) /microwave chemical gas sensors using conducting polymers are discussed. First, the introduction of various conducting polymers is described. Only polyaniline (PANi), polypyrrole (PPy) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), which are mainly used for gas sensors in RF/microwave region, are focused in this review. Sensing mechanism of the three conducting polymers are presented. And the RF/microwave characteristics and RF/microwave applications of the three conducting polymers are discussed. Moreover, the gas sensors using conducting polymers in RF/microwave frequencies are described. Finally, the the challenges and the prospects of the next generation of the RF/microwave based chemical sensors for wireless applications are proposed.

Flexible Graphene-Assembled Film-Based Antenna for Wireless Wearable Sensor with Miniaturized Size and High Sensitivity

The flexible radio frequency (RF) wireless antennas used as sensors, which can detect signal variation resulting from the deformation of the antenna, have attracted increasing attention with the development of wearable electronic devices and the Internet of Things (IoT). However, miniaturization and sensitivity issues restrict the development of flexible RF sensors. In this work, we demonstrate the application of a flexible and highly conductive graphene-assembled film (GAF) for antenna design. The GAF with a high conductivity of 10⁶ S/m has the advantages of light weight, high flexibility, and superb mechanical stability. As a result, a small-size (50 mm × 50 mm) and flexible GAF-based antenna operating at 3.13-4.42 GHz is achieved, and this GAF antenna-based wireless wearable sensor shows high strain sensitivities of 34.9 for tensile bending and 35.6 for compressive bending. Furthermore, this sensor exhibits good mechanical flexibility and structural stability after a 100-cycle bending test when attached to the back of the hand and the wrist, which demonstrates broad application prospects in health-monitoring devices, electronic skins, and smart robotics.

Chameleon Luminophore for Erasable Encrypted and Decrypted Devices: From Dual-Channel, Programmable, Smart Sensory Lanthanide Hydrogel to Logic Devices

With the rapid development of the data security technology, increasing attention has been paid to programmable memory materials with desirable security. However, most conventional memory devices only have a single switchable color state. In this research, a kind of pH-responsive Chameleon luminescent sensor (Lap@Eu-OFX, Lap = laponite, OFX = ofloxacin) based on lanthanide doping has been fabricated, which can realize highly contrast, dynamically controlled full-color display by changing the pH value of the solution. The advanced programmable security inks, including the green and red luminescent inks, have been prepared and used to protect confidential information. More interestingly, triethylamine and hydrochloric acid are selected as encryption and decryption reagents, which can repeatedly switch the emission color of important data. Hence, the high-tech security inks show great potential in data coding, multiencryption, and decryption under UV light. Furthermore, the designed dual-channel memory device, Lap@Eu-OFX@CS (CS = Chitosan), enables reversible synchronous switching of sol-gel and emission color when converting from acid to base conditions. This can be dynamically monitored by a subsequent logic gate system and can be converted and stored into binary values. This work provides an effective approach for the design and promising application of information encryptor, smart monitor, and circuit controllers.

Nanomaterial-Enabled Flexible and Stretchable Sensing Systems: Processing, Integration, and Applications

Nanomaterial-enabled flexible and stretchable electronics have seen tremendous progress in recent years, evolving from single sensors to integrated sensing systems. Compared with nanomaterial-enabled sensors with a single function, integration of multiple sensors is conducive to comprehensive monitoring of personal health and environment, intelligent human-machine interfaces, and realistic imitation of human skin in robotics and prosthetics. Integration of sensors with other functional components promotes real-world applications of the sensing systems. Here, an overview of the design and integration strategies and manufacturing techniques for such sensing systems is given. Then, representative nanomaterial-enabled flexible and stretchable sensing systems are presented. Following that, representative applications in personal health, fitness tracking, electronic skins, artificial nervous systems, and human-machine interactions are provided. To conclude, perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in this burgeoning field are considered.

Comparative Study on the Effect of Protonation Control for Resistive Gas Sensor Based on Close-Packed Polypyrrole Nanoparticles

Conducting polymers are often used as sensor electrodes due to their conjugated chain structure, which leads to high sensitivity and rapid response at room temperature. Numerous studies have been conducted on the structures of conducting polymer nanomaterials to increase the active surface area for the target materials. However, studies on the control of the chemical state of conducting polymer chains and the modification of the sensing signal transfer with these changes have not been reported. In this work, polypyrrole nanoparticles (PPyNPs), where is PPy is a conducting polymer, are applied as a sensor transducer to analyze the chemical sensing ability of the electrode. In particular, the protonation of PPy is adjusted by chemical methods to modify the transfer sensing signals with changes in the polymer chain structure. The PPyNPs that were modified at pH 1 exhibit high sensitivity to the target analyte (down to 1 ppb of NH3) with short response and recovery times of less than 20 s and 50 s, respectively, at 25 °C.

Casting of carbon cloth enrobed polypyrrole electrode for high electrochemical performances

The present investigation deals with the fabrication of a novel flexible and highly conductive PPy electrode. This was made by festooning PPy nanoparticles on carbon cloth (CC) by using chemical liquid process. The developed porous PPy@CC composite have good flexibility with low weight (1.1 mg) and high electrical conductivity (89 Ω-1cm-1). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) confirmed the formation of PPy on carbon cloth. Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) reveals that the PPy nanoparticles are encapsulated in carbon cloth. The fabricated carbon cloth has been used for solid-state symmetrical supercapacitors (SC) and low-cost material for electrode in potential energy storage devices. These film electrodes showed much superior electrochemical performance i.e. high stability under different current density, encouraging energy density, lower internal resistivity and higher specific capacitance. Synthesized flexible PPy@CC composite electrodes have brilliant applications in various kinds of electrochemical energy storage devices.

Highly Sensitive NH3 Wireless Sensor Based on Ag-RGO Composite Operated at Room-temperature

The detection of ammonia (NH₃) in low concentrations is very important in the chemical industry and for human health. In this paper, we present reduced graphene oxide (RGO) decorated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as a sensing material for NH₃. A simple, environmentally friendly, and cost-efficient green approach for the preparation of the sensing material is proposed. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) were used to analyze the crystalline structure, material composition, and surface appearance characteristics of the sensing material. By combining the material with a commercial near-field communication (NFC) tag, a wireless gas sensor was built. The enhanced NH₃-sensing performance is mainly due to the synergistic effect between Ag and RGO. More specifically, AgNPs enhanced the adsorption capacity of RGO for NH₃ electrons. The excellent performance of the sensor shows that it has potential for applications in food safety, environment, and human health monitoring.

Electrochemical detection of Salmonella using an invA genosensor on polypyrrole-reduced graphene oxide modified glassy carbon electrode and AuNPs-horseradish peroxidase-streptavidin as nanotag

A rapid and sensitive electrochemical biosensor was constructed to detect Salmonella using invA gene biosensor. The biosensing was based on polyrrole-reduced graphene oxide (PPy-rGO) nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and signal amplification with horseradish peroxidase-streptavidin biofunctionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs-HRP-SA). PPy-rGO was prepared at 60 °C by chemical reduction of PPy-functionalized graphene oxide (PPy-GO) that was synthesized by in situ polymerization at room temperature. The detection signal was amplified via enzymatic reduction of H₂O₂ in the presence of hydroquinone (HQ) using AuNPs-HRP-SA as nanotag. Under optimal conditions, the differential pulse voltametric (DPV) signal from the biosensor was linearly related to the logarithm of target invA gene concentrations from 1.0 × 10^-16 to 1.0 × 10^-10 M, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 4.7 × 10^-17 M. The biosensor can also detect Salmonella in the range of 9.6 to 9.6 × 10⁴ CFU mL^-1, with LOD of 8.07 CFU mL^-1. The biosensor showed good regeneration ability, acceptable selectivity, repeatability and stability, which bode well as an alternative method for Salmonella screening.

Nanomaterial-Enabled Wearable Sensors for Healthcare

Highly sensitive wearable sensors that can be conformably attached to human skin or integrated with textiles to monitor the physiological parameters of human body or the surrounding environment have garnered tremendous interest. Owing to the large surface area and outstanding material properties, nanomaterials are promising building blocks for wearable sensors. Recent advances in the nanomaterial-enabled wearable sensors including temperature, electrophysiological, strain, tactile, electrochemical, and environmental sensors are presented in this review. Integration of multiple sensors for multimodal sensing and integration with other components into wearable systems are summarized. Representative applications of nanomaterial-enabled wearable sensors for healthcare, including continuous health monitoring, daily and sports activity tracking, and multifunctional electronic skin are highlighted. Finally, challenges, opportunities, and future perspectives in the field of nanomaterial-enabled wearable sensors are discussed.

High-Performance Wireless Ammonia Gas Sensors Based on Reduced Graphene Oxide and Nano-Silver Ink Hybrid Material Loaded on a Patch Antenna

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) has been studied as a resistive ammonia gas sensor at room temperature. The sensitive hybrid material composed of rGO and nano-silver ink (Ag-ink) was loaded on a microstrip patch antenna to realize high-performance wireless ammonia sensors. The material was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Firstly, interdigital electrodes (IDEs) printed on the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) by direct printing were employed to measure the variation of resistance of the sensitive material with the ammonia concentration. The results indicated the response of sensor varied from 4.25% to 14.7% under 15–200 ppm ammonia concentrations. Furthermore, the hybrid material was loaded on a microstrip patch antenna fabricated by a conventional printed circuit board (PCB) process, and a 10 MHz frequency shift of the sensor antenna could be observed for 200 ppm ammonia gas. Finally, the wireless sensing property of the sensor antenna was successfully tested using the same emitted antenna outside the gas chamber with a high gain of 5.48 dBi, and an increased reflection magnitude of the emitted antenna due to the frequency mismatch of the sensor antenna was observed. Therefore, wireless ammonia gas sensors loaded on a patch antenna have significant application prospects in the field of Internet of Things (IoTs).

Wireless Oxygen Sensors Enabled by Fe(II)-Polymer Wrapped Carbon Nanotubes

Oxygen causes food spoilage and drug degradation, which is addressed commercially by modified atmosphere packaging. We report herein a wireless oxygen sensor, O₂-p-CARD, from solution processed Fe^II-poly(4-vinylpyridine)-single-walled carbon nanotube composites on commercial passive near-field communication tags. A large irreversible attenuation in the reflection signal of an O₂-p-CARD was observed in response to oxygen at relevant concentrations, enabling non-line-of-sight monitoring of modified atmosphere packaging. These devices allow for cumulative oxygen exposure inside a package to be read with a conventional smartphone. We have demonstrated that an O₂-p-CARD can detect air ingress into a nitrogen-filled vegetable package at ambient conditions. This technology provides an inexpensive, heavy-metal-free, and smartphone-readable method for in situ non-line-of-sight quality monitoring of oxygen-sensitive packaged products.

Smart Sensor Systems for Wearable Electronic Devices

Wearable human interaction devices are technologies with various applications for improving human comfort, convenience and security and for monitoring health conditions. Healthcare monitoring includes caring for the welfare of every person, which includes early diagnosis of diseases, real-time monitoring of the effects of treatment, therapy, and the general monitoring of the conditions of people's health. As a result, wearable electronic devices are receiving greater attention because of their facile interaction with the human body, such as monitoring heart rate, wrist pulse, motion, blood pressure, intraocular pressure, and other health-related conditions. In this paper, various smart sensors and wireless systems are reviewed, the current state of research related to such systems is reported, and their detection mechanisms are compared. Our focus was limited to wearable and attachable sensors. Section 1 presents the various smart sensors. In Section 2, we describe multiplexed sensors that can monitor several physiological signals simultaneously. Section 3 provides a discussion about short-range wireless systems including bluetooth, near field communication (NFC), and resonance antenna systems for wearable electronic devices.

A highly sensitive FET-type aptasensor using flower-like MoS2 nanospheres for real-time detection of arsenic(iii)

Arsenic (As) contamination in drinking water is problematic due to its threat to human health. Highly stable, sensitive and selective sensors are needed for As(iii), which is the most toxic of the various forms of arsenic. Herein, we describe the fabrication of field-effect transistor (FET)-type aptasensors for As(iii) detection that is based on carboxylic polypyrrole (CPPy)-coated flower-like MoS₂ nanospheres (CFMNSs). Arsenic-binding aptamer-conjugated CFMNSs were integrated into a liquid-ion gated FET system, leading to extraordinary performance with a rapid response (on a time scale of less than 1 s). Field-induced current changes occurred through the interaction between the aptamer and As(iii), resulting in sensitive discrimination of As(iii) at unprecedentedly low concentrations (ca. 1 pM). Moreover, the CFMNS-based aptasensor selectively recognized As(iii) among numerous other metal ions and accurately detected As(iii) in a mixed solution. The FET aptasensor could also discriminate target analytes in a real sample derived from river water. This MoS₂-based aptasensor is a promising tool for the detection of As(iii) and could be used in a wide range of practical applications.

Chemo-Electrical Gas Sensors Based on Conducting Polymer Hybrids

Conducting polymer (CP) hybrids, which combine CPs with heterogeneous species, have shown strong potential as electrical transducers in chemosensors. The charge transport properties of CPs are based on chemical redox reactions and provide various chemo-electrical signal transduction mechanisms. Combining CPs with other functional materials has provided opportunities to tailor their major morphological and physicochemical properties, often resulting in enhanced sensing performance. The hybrids can provide an enlarged effective surface area for enhanced interaction and chemical specificity to target analytes via a new signal transduction mechanism. Here, we review a selection of important CPs, including polyaniline, polypyrrole, polythiophene and their derivatives, to fabricate versatile organic and inorganic hybrid materials and their chemo-electrical sensing performance. We focus on what benefits can be achieved through material hybridization in the sensing application. Moreover, state-of-the-art trends in technologies of CP hybrid sensors are discussed, as are limitations and challenges.

Inkjet printed nanomaterial based flexible radio frequency identification (RFID) tag sensors for the internet of nano things

The Internet of Things (IoT) has limitless possibilities for applications in the entire spectrum of our daily lives, from healthcare to automobiles to public safety.
