Abstract
In the field of neuroscience as well as in the clinical setting, the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) is an analyte which is important for research as well as medical purposes. There are plenty of methods available to measure dopamine quantitatively, with voltammetric ones such as differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) being among the most convenient and simple ones. However, dopamine often occurs, either naturally or because of the requirements of involved enzymatic systems, alongside substances that can influence the signal it produces upon electrochemical conversion. An example for such substances is the magnesium ion, which itself is not electrochemically active in the potential range needed for DA oxidation, but influences the dopamine signal. We have characterized the properties of DPV signals subject to the interaction between DA and Mg2+ and show that, although these properties are changing in a nonlinear fashion when both concentrations are varying, relatively simple linear mathematical models can be used to determine dopamine concentrations quantitatively in the presence of magnesium ions. The focus of this study is thus, the mathematical treatment of experimental data in order to overcome an analytical problem and not the investigation of the chemical background of DA-Mg2+ interaction.

Abstract
Curcumin (CUR), a natural compound extracted from turmeric, has shown potential as a photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy (PDT). The aim of this work was to enhance the efficacy of CUR by modifying it using titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles and a cationic polymer called Sofast to create a nanocomposite TiO2-CUR-Sofast (TCS). Compared to unmodified CUR, TCS exhibited a broadening toward longer wavelength in the absorption wavelength within the 400-550 nm range, leading to improved CUR absorption. Cellular uptake efficiency of TCS was also enhanced, and it demonstrated nearly 4.7-fold higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation than CUR. Furthermore, TCS displayed the ability to attach to the cell membrane and enter cells within a 30-min incubation period. Upon irradiation, TCS exhibited remarkable cytotoxicity, resulting in a significant reduction in the viability of various cancer cells. Autofluorescence lifetime imaging of intracellular reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (phosphate) (NAD(P)H) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) enzymes indicated that cancer cells treated with TCS and irradiation undergo a metabolic pathway shift from oxidative phosphorylation to glycolysis. These findings highlight the potential of TCS as an effective PDT agent for cancer treatment.

Abstract
Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) is the most used conducting polymer from energy to biomedical applications. Despite its exceptional properties, there is a need for developing new materials that can improve some of its inherent limitations, e.g., biocompatibility. In this context, doping PEDOT is propose with a robust recombinant protein with tunable properties, the consensus tetratricopeptide repeated protein (CTPR). The doping consists of an oxidative polymerization, where the PEDOT chains are stabilized by the negative charges of the CTPR protein. CTPR proteins are evaluated with three different lengths (3, 10, and 20 identical CTPR units) and optimized varied synthetic conditions. These findings revealed higher doping rate and oxidized state of the PEDOT chains when doped with the smallest scaffold (CTPR3). These PEDOT:CTPR hybrids possess ionic and electronic conductivity. Notably, PEDOT:CTPR3 displayed an electronic conductivity of 0.016 S cm-1 , higher than any other reported protein-doped PEDOT. This result places PEDOT:CTPR3 at the level of PEDOT-biopolymer hybrids, and brings it closer in performance to PEDOT:PSS gold standard. Furthermore, PEDOT:CTPR3 dispersion is successfully optimized for inkjet printing, preserving its electroactivity properties after printing. This approach opens the door to the use of these novel hybrids for bioelectronics.

Abstract
Controlling stem cell behavior at the material interface is crucial for the development of novel technologies in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine. The composition and presentation of bio-factors on a surface strongly influence the activity of stem cells. Herein, we designed an electroactive surface that mimics the initial process of trabecular bone formation, by immobilizing chondrocyte-derived plasma membrane nanofragments (PMNFs) on its surface for rapid mineralization within 2 days. Moreover, the electroactive surface was based on the conducting polymer polypyrrole (PPy), which enabled dynamic control of the presentation of PMNFs on the surface via electrochemical redox switching, further resulting in the formation of bone minerals with different morphologies. Furthermore, bone minerals with contrasting surface morphologies had differential effects on the differentiation of human bone marrow-derived stem cells (hBMSCs) cultured on the surface. Together, this electroactive surface showed multifunctional characteristics, not only allowing dynamic control of PMNF presentation but also promoting the formation of bone minerals with different morphologies within 2 days. This electroactive substrate could be valuable for more precise control of stem cell growth and differentiation, and further development of more suitable microenvironments containing bone apatite for housing a bone marrow stem cell niche, such as biochips/bone-on-chips.

Abstract
Gallium (Ga)-based liquid metal materials have emerged as a promising material platform for soft bioelectronics. Unfortunately, Ga has limited biostability and electrochemical performance under physiological conditions, which can hinder the implementation of its use in bioelectronic devices. Here, an effective conductive polymer deposition strategy on the liquid metal surface to improve the biostability and electrochemical performance of Ga-based liquid metals for use under physiological conditions is demonstrated. The conductive polymer [poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):tetrafluoroborate]-modified liquid metal surface significantly outperforms the liquid metal.based electrode in mechanical, biological, and electrochemical studies. In vivo action potential recordings in behaving nonhuman primate and invertebrate models demonstrate the feasibility of using liquid metal electrodes for high-performance neural recording applications. This is the first demonstration of single-unit neural recording using Ga-based liquid metal bioelectronic devices to date. The results determine that the electrochemical deposition of conductive polymer over liquid metal can improve the material properties of liquid metal electrodes for use under physiological conditions and open numerous design opportunities for next-generation liquid metal-based bioelectronics.

Abstract
A label-free nanoimmunosensor is reported based on p53/CeO2/PEDOT nanobiocomposite-decorated screen-printed gold electrodes (SPAuE) for the electrochemical detection of anti-p53 autoantibodies. CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized and stabilized with cyanopropyltriethoxysilane by a soft chemistry method. The nanoimmunosensing architecture was prepared by in situ electropolymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) on SPAuE in the presence of CeO2 NPs. The CeO2 NPs and Ce/PEDOT/SPAuE were characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, dynamic and electrophoretic light scattering, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Ce/PEDOT/SPAuE was biofunctionalized with p53 antigen by covalent bonding for the label-free determination of anti-p53 autoantibodies by differential pulse voltammetry. The nanobiocomposite-based nanoimmunosensor detected anti-p53 autoantibodies in a linear range from 10 to 1000 pg mL-1, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.2 pg mL-1. The nanoimmunosensor offered high specificity, selectivity, and long-term storage stability with great potential to detect anti-p53 autoantibodies in serum samples. Overall, incorporating organo-functional nanoparticles into polymeric matrices can provide a simple-to-assemble, rapid, and ultrasensitive approach for on-site screening of anti-p53 autoantibodies and other disease-related biomarkers with low sample volumes.

Abstract
Conducting polymers (CPs) are of great interests to researchers around the world in biomedical applications owing to their unique electrical and mechanical properties. Besides, they are easy to fabricate and have long-term stability. These features make CPs a powerful building block of modern biomaterials. Peptide functionalization has been a versatile tool for the development of CP-based biomaterials. With the aid of peptide modifications, the biocompatibility, target selectivity, and cellular interactions of CPs can be greatly improved. Reflecting these aspects, an increasing number of studies on peptide-integrated conducting polymers have been reported recently. In this review, various kinds of peptide immobilization strategies on CPs are introduced. Moreover, the aims of peptide modification are discussed in three aspects: enhancing the specific selectivity, avoiding nonspecific adhesion, and mimicking the environment of extracellular matrix. We highlighted recent studies in the applications of peptide-integrated CPs in electrochemical sensors, antifouling surfaces, and conductive biointerfaces. These studies have shown great potentials from the integration of peptide and CPs as a versatile platform for advanced biological and clinical applications in the near future.

Abstract
In the quest for designing affordable diagnostic devices with high performance, precisely functionalized carbon-based materials with high accuracy and selectivity are required. Every material has its own unique ability to interact with the analyte, and its performance can be enhanced by probing the interaction mechanism. Herein, p-aminophenol (PAP)-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanoscale material is developed by a one-step synthetic route as an all-organic-based sensor. As the PAP molecules are precisely covalently interacted with the rGO at the basal plane and form a wrinkled-paper-like structure, the functionalized material exhibits an outstanding sensing ability (7.5 nM neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) at a wide linear range, 0.01-100 μM) with fast electrical transduction (<3 s) and good recyclability (∼10 cycles) in a real sample. Combining various analytical and density functional theory (DFT) calculation methods, physicochemical properties and the interaction mechanism of analyte-materials transduction are discussed exclusively. Besides, the potential application of the well-dispersed rGO-PAP gravure ink in flexible-printed electronics fields is explored. This study not only provides new insights into the surface/interface chemistry and working principle of this unique anchoring of PAP on rGO but also offers a new pathway for developing other forms of metal-free/organic functionalized biosensors with high efficiency.

Abstract
In this study, a biosensor assembly based on microelectrode arrays (MEAs) modified with PtNPt/MWCNT-PEDOT:PSS nanocomposites is presented to synchronously detect the dopamine (DA) and electrophysiological activities in rat brains. Different morphological and electrochemical characterizations were conducted to show the excellent mechanical and electrical properties of the as-prepared probes. The developed biosensors realized the sensitive and selective detection of DA with the existence of significant interferences such as uric acid (UA), ascorbic acid (AA), glutamate (Glu), and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC). Calibration curve for the DA response was linear with the concentration from 0.05 μM to 79 μM (R = 0.999), with a sensitivity of 30.561 pA/μM and detection limit as low as 50 nM. Finally, the proposed microelectrode was applied to be implanted into the cortex and caudate putamen (CPU) of rats, which was demonstrated to stably measure the synchronous neurochemical and neurophysiological changes caused by 72 h sleep deprivation. The in vivo measuring results showed that the sleep deprivation increased the DA release and neural spike activity in both cortex and CPU. The local field potential (LFP) power in the delta and theta band was significantly increased as well. These changes in brain may reflect the brain's adaptive reaction toward the side effects induced by sleep deprivation and may partially explain the mechanism of forced wakefulness in the presence of accumulated sleep pressure.

Abstract
A unique nanocomposite was fabricated using negatively charged manganese dioxide nanoparticles, poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) and reduced graphene oxide (MnO2/PEDOT/rGO). The nanocomposite was deposited on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) functionalized with amino groups. The modified GCE was used to electrochemically detect dopamine (DA). The surface morphology, charge effect and electrochemical behaviours of the modified GCE were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, respectively. The MnO2/PEDOT/rGO/GCE exhibited excellent performance towards DA sensing with a linear range between 0.05 and 135 µM with a lowest detection limit of 30 nM (S/N = 3). Selectivity towards DA was high in the presence of high concentrations of the typical interferences ascorbic acid and uric acid. The stability and reproducibility of the electrode were good. The sensor accurately determined DA in human serum. The synergic effect of the multiple components of the fabricated nanocomposite were critical to the good DA sensing performance. rGO provided a conductive backbone, PEDOT directed the uniform growth of MnO2 and adsorbed DA via pi-pi and electrostatic interaction, while the negatively charged MnO2 provided adsorption and catalytic sites for protonated DA. This work produced a promising biosensor that sensitively and selectively detected DA.

Abstract
In spite of a great improvement in medical health services and an increase in lifespan, we have witnessed a skyrocket increase in the incidence of central nervous system (CNS) disorders including brain tumors, neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington's disease), ischemic stroke, and epilepsy, which have seriously undermined the quality of life and substantially increased economic and societal burdens. Development of diagnostic methods for CNS disorders is still in the early stage, and the clinical outcomes suggest these methods are not ready for the challenges associated with diagnosis of CNS disorders, such as early detection, specific binding, sharp contrast, and continuous monitoring of therapeutic interventions. Another challenge is to overcome various barrier structures during delivery of diagnostic agents, especially the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Fortunately, utilization of nanomaterials has been pursued as a potential and promising strategy to address these challenges. This review will discuss anatomical and functional structures of BBB and transport mechanisms of nanomaterials across the BBB, and special emphases will be placed on the state-of-the-art advances in the development of nanomedicines from a variety of nanomaterials for diagnosis of CNS disorders. Meanwhile, current challenges and future perspectives in this field are also highlighted.

Abstract
Modulation of chemical functional groups on conducting polymers (CPs) provides an effective way to tailor the physicochemical properties and electrochemical performance of CPs, as well as serves as a functional interface for stable integration of CPs with biomolecules for organic bioelectronics (OBEs). Herein, we introduced a facile approach to modulate the carboxylate functional groups on the PEDOT interface through a systematic evaluation on the effect of a series of carboxylate-containing molecules as counterion dopant integrated into the PEDOT backbone, including acetate as monocarboxylate (mono-COO-), malate as dicarboxylate (di-COO-), citrate as tricarboxylate (tri-COO-), and poly(acrylamide-co-acrylate) as polycarboxylate (poly-COO-) bearing different amounts of molecular carboxylate moieties to create tunable PEDOT:COO- interfaces with improved polymerization efficiency. We demonstrated the modulation of PEDOT:COO- interfaces with various granulated morphologies from 0.33 to 0.11 μm, tunable surface carboxylate densities from 0.56 to 3.6 μM cm-2, and with improved electrochemical kinetics and cycling stability. We further demonstrated the effective and stable coupling of an enzyme model lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) with the optimized PEDOT:poly-COO- interface via simple covalent chemistry to develop biofunctionalized PEDOT (Bio-PEDOT) as a lactate biosensor. The biosensing mechanism is driven by a sequential bioelectrochemical signal transduction between the bio-organic LDH and organic PEDOT toward the concept of all-polymer-based OBEs with a high sensitivity of 8.38 μA mM-1 cm-2 and good reproducibility. Moreover, we utilized the LDH-PEDOT biosensor for the detection of lactate in spiked serum samples with a high recovery value of 91-96% and relatively small RSD in the range of 2.1-3.1%. Our findings provide a new insight into the design and optimization of functional CPs, leading to the development of new OBEs for sensing, biosensing, bioengineering, and biofuel cell applications.

Abstract
Dopamine (DA) is an important neurotransmitter responsible for the functions and activities of multiple systems in human. Electrochemical detection of DA has the advantages of fast analysis and cost-effectiveness, while a regular electrode probe is restricted to laboratory use because the probe size is too large to be suitable for an in vivo or in vitro analysis. In this study, we have developed porphyrin-based metal organic framework (MOF525) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-based composites to modify microelectrode for DA detection. Two types of PEDOT monomers with different functional groups were investigated in this study. By varying the monomer ratios, electrolyte concentrations, and electropolymerization temperature, it was found that the PEDOT monomer containing carboxylic group facilitated the formation of regular morphology during the electropolymerization process. The uniform morphology of the PEDOT promoted the electron transmission efficiency in the same direction, while the MOF525 provided a large reactive surface area for electrocatalysis of DA. Thus, the MOF525/PEDOT composite improved the sensitivity-to-noise ratio of DA signaling, where the sensitivity reached 11 nA/μM in a good linear range of 4–100 µM. In addition, porphyrin-based MOF could also increase the selectivity to DA against other common clinical interferences, such as ascorbic acid and uric acid. The as-synthesized microelectrode modified with MOF525/PEDOT in this study exhibited great potential in real time analysis.

Abstract
A clear need exists for novel nanostructured materials that are capable to meet the performance criteria of a number of neuronal therapies including neural recording, stimulation and sensing of bioactive molecules at the electrode-tissue interface. By combining Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), with Carbon Nanofibers (CNFs), we demonstrate a versatile approach for the synthesis of a novel composite material PEDOT:CNF with remarkable electrochemical properties, combining low impedance, high surface area, high charge injection capability and reliable neurotransmitters monitoring using amperometric techniques. The oxidized CNFs were utilized as dopants of PEDOT to prepare the composite coatings through electrochemical deposition on neural microelectrodes arrays (MEA). The PEDOT:CNF modified microelectrodes demonstrated the low specific impedance of 1.28 MΩ μm2 at 1 kHz and results in unrivalled charge injection limit of 10.03 mC/cm2 when compared to other reported organic electrode nanomaterials. Furthermore, amperometric detection performances were determined for the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, exhibiting linear concentration range from 0.1 to 9 μM and from 0.06 to 9 μM respectively, high sensitivities (44.54 pA/nM.μm2 and 71.08 pA/nM.μm2, respectively) and low detection limits (0.045 μM and 0.056 μM, respectively). Cell viability was investigated on PEDOT:CNF coated microelectrodes to show that the composite material does not advocate any cytotoxicity. Taken together, these results suggest the great potential of PEDOT:CNF composite for developing next-generation multifunctional microelectrodes for applications in neural therapies.

Tunable 3D nanofibrous and bio-functionalised PEDOT network explored as a conducting polymer-based biosensor. Biosens Bioelectron 2020; 159:112181. Abstract
Conducting polymers that possess good electrochemical properties, nanostructured morphology and functionality for bioconjugation are essential to realise the concept of all-polymer-based biosensors that do not depend on traditional nanocatalysts such as carbon materials, metal, metal oxides or dyes. In this research, we demonstrated a facile approach for the simultaneous preparation of a bi-functional PEDOT interface with a tunable 3D nanofibrous network and carboxylic acid groups (i.e. Nano-PEDOT-COOH) via controlled co-polymerisation of EDOT and EDOT-COOH monomers, using tetrabutylammonium perchlorate as a soft-template. By tuning the ratio between EDOT and EDOT-COOH monomer, the nanofibrous structure and carboxylic acid functionalisation of Nano-PEDOT-COOH were varied over a fibre diameter range of 15.6 ± 3.7 to 70.0 ± 9.5 nm and a carboxylic acid group density from 0.03 to 0.18 μmol cm-2. The nanofibres assembled into a three-dimensional network with a high specific surface area, which contributed to low charge transfer resistance and high transduction activity towards the co-enzyme NADH, delivering a wide linear range of 20-960 μM and a high sensitivity of 0.224 μA μM-1 cm-2 at the Nano-PEDOT-COOH50% interface. Furthermore, the carboxylic acid groups provide an anchoring site for the stable immobilisation of an NADH-dependent dehydrogenase (i.e. lactate dehydrogenase), via EDC/S-NHS chemistry, for the fabrication of a Bio-Nano-PEDOT-based biosensor for lactate detection which had a response time of less than 10 s over the range of 0.05-1.8 mM. Our developed bio-Nano-PEDOT interface shows future potential for coupling with multi-biorecognition molecules via carboxylic acid groups for the development of a range of advanced all-polymer biosensors.

Abstract
Investment in wearable monitoring systems is increasing rapidly for realizing their practical applications, for example, in medical treatment, sports, and security systems. However, existing wearable monitoring systems are designed to measure a real-time physical signal and abnormal conditions rather than harmful environmental characteristics. In this study, a flexible chemical sensor electrode based on a three-dimensional conductive nanofilm (3D CNF) is fabricated via facile polymerization with temperature control. The morphology and chemical state of the 3D CNF are modified via electrochemical doping control to increase the carrier mobility and the active surface area of the sensor electrode. The sensor electrode is highly sensitive (up to 1 ppb), selective, and stable for an analyte (NH3) at room temperature owing to the three-dimensional morphology of polypyrrole and the oxidation-level control.
