Single-Layer Graphene as a Barrier Layer for Intense UV Laser-Induced Damages for Silver Nanowire Network

Ionic Liquid-Enhanced Assembly of Nanomaterials for Highly Stable Flexible Transparent Electrodes

The controlled assembly of nanomaterials has demonstrated significant potential in advancing technological devices. However, achieving highly efficient and low-loss assembly technique for nanomaterials, enabling the creation of hierarchical structures with distinctive functionalities, remains a formidable challenge. Here, we present a method for nanomaterial assembly enhanced by ionic liquids, which enables the fabrication of highly stable, flexible, and transparent electrodes featuring an organized layered structure. The utilization of hydrophobic and nonvolatile ionic liquids facilitates the production of stable interfaces with water, effectively preventing the sedimentation of 1D/2D nanomaterials assembled at the interface. Furthermore, the interfacially assembled nanomaterial monolayer exhibits an alternate self-climbing behavior, enabling layer-by-layer transfer and the formation of a well-ordered MXene-wrapped silver nanowire network film. The resulting composite film not only demonstrates exceptional photoelectric performance with a sheet resistance of 9.4 Ω sq-1 and 93% transmittance, but also showcases remarkable environmental stability and mechanical flexibility. Particularly noteworthy is its application in transparent electromagnetic interference shielding materials and triboelectric nanogenerator devices. This research introduces an innovative approach to manufacture and tailor functional devices based on ordered nanomaterials.

Multifunctional carbon nitride nanoarchitectures for catalysis

Catalysis is at the heart of modern-day chemical and pharmaceutical industries, and there is an urgent demand to develop metal-free, high surface area, and efficient catalysts in a scalable, reproducible and economic manner. Amongst the ever-expanding two-dimensional materials family, carbon nitride (CN) has emerged as the most researched material for catalytic applications due to its unique molecular structure with tunable visible range band gap, surface defects, basic sites, and nitrogen functionalities. These properties also endow it with anchoring capability with a large number of catalytically active sites and provide opportunities for doping, hybridization, sensitization, etc. To make considerable progress in the use of CN as a highly effective catalyst for various applications, it is critical to have an in-depth understanding of its synthesis, structure and surface sites. The present review provides an overview of the recent advances in synthetic approaches of CN, its physicochemical properties, and band gap engineering, with a focus on its exclusive usage in a variety of catalytic reactions, including hydrogen evolution reactions, overall water splitting, water oxidation, CO2 reduction, nitrogen reduction reactions, pollutant degradation, and organocatalysis. While the structural design and band gap engineering of catalysts are elaborated, the surface chemistry is dealt with in detail to demonstrate efficient catalytic performances. Burning challenges in catalytic design and future outlook are elucidated.

High performance 1D-2D CuO/MoS2 photodetectors enhanced by femtosecond laser-induced contact engineering

The integration of 2D materials with other dimensional materials opens up rich possibilities for both fundamental physics and exotic nanodevices. However, current mixed-dimensional heterostructures often suffer from interfacial contact issues and environment-induced degradation, which severely limits their performance in electronics/optoelectronics. Herein, we demonstrate a novel BN-encapsulated CuO/MoS₂ 2D-1D van der Waals heterostructure photodetector with an ultrahigh photoresponsivity which is 10-fold higher than its previous 2D-1D counterparts. The interfacial contact state and photodetection capabilities of 2D-1D heterojunctions are significantly improved via femtosecond laser irradiation induced MoS₂ wrapping and contamination removal. These h-BN protected devices show highly sensitive, gate-tunable and robust photoelectronic properties. By controlling the gate and bias voltages, the device can achieve a photoresponsivity as high as 2500 A W^-1 in the forward bias mode, or achieve a high detectivity of 6.5 × 10¹¹ Jones and a typical rise time of 2.5 ms at reverse bias. Moreover, h-BN encapsulation effectively protects the mixed-dimensional photodetector from electrical depletion by gas molecules such as O₂ and H₂O during fs laser treatment or the operation process, thus greatly improving the stability and service life in harsh environments. This work provides a new way for the further development of high performance, low cost, and robust mixed-dimensional heterostructure photodetectors by femtosecond laser contact engineering.

2+δ-Dimensional Materials via Atomistic Z-Welding

Pivotal to functional van der Waals stacked flexible electronic/excitonic/spintronic/thermoelectric chips is the synergy amongst constituent layers. However; the current techniques viz. sequential chemical vapor deposition, micromechanical/wet-chemical transfer are mostly limited due to diffused interfaces, and metallic remnants/bubbles at the interface. Inter-layer-coupled 2+δ-dimensional materials, as a new class of materials can be significantly suitable for out-of-plane carrier transport and hence prompt response in prospective devices. Here, the discovery of the use of exotic electric field ≈10⁶  V cm^{- 1} (at microwave hot-spot) and 2 thermomechanical conditions i.e. pressure ≈1 MPa, T ≈ 200 °C (during solvothermal reaction) to realize 2+δ-dimensional materials is reported. It is found that P_z P_z chemical bonds form between the component layers, e.g., CB and CN in G-BN, MoN and MoB in MoS₂ -BN hybrid systems as revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. New vibrational peaks in Raman spectra (BC ≈1320 cm^-1 for the G-BN system and MoB ≈365 cm^-1 for the MoS₂ -BN system) are recorded. Tunable mid-gap formation, along with diodic behavior (knee voltage ≈0.7 V, breakdown voltage ≈1.8 V) in the reduced graphene oxide-reduced BN oxide (RGO-RBNO) hybrid system is also observed. Band-gap tuning in MoS₂ -BN system is observed. Simulations reveal stacking-dependent interfacial charge/potential drops, hinting at the feasibility of next-generation functional devices/sensors.

Transparent and Flexible Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Materials by Constructing Sandwich AgNW@MXene/Wood Composites

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials have attracted intensive attention with the increased electromagnetic pollution, which are required to possess high transparency and flexibility for applications in visualization windows, aerospace equipment, and wearable devices. However, it remains a challenge to achieve high-performance EMI shielding while maintaining excellent light transmittance. Herein, a sandwich composite is constructed by coating the core material of transparent wood (TW) with silver nanowire (AgNW)@MXene, exhibiting a maximum transmittance of 28.8% in the visible range and a longitudinal tensile strength of 47.8 MPa. The average EMI shielding effectiveness can reach up to 44.0 dB under X-band (8-12.4 GHz), ascribed to the increased absorption shielding induced by the multireflection of electromagnetic waves within microchannels of the TW layer and the interfacial polarization between AgNW and MXene. Simultaneously, large-scale EMI shielding films can be conveniently produced by our proposed method, which provides inspiration for the development of advanced EMI shielding materials for wide applications.

Multilevel Anti-Counterfeiting Based on Covert Structural Features Embedded in Femtosecond-Laser-Treated Gold Nanocluster/Graphene Hybrid Layer

The conventional nanoscale anti-counterfeiting scheme, exhibiting limited encoding capacity, faces growing challenges of being falsified with the advent of advanced high-resolution equipment. In this study, we propose a multilevel anti-counterfeiting device based on a femtosecond laser (fs-laser) treated plasmonic gold nanocluster/graphene (AuNC/Gr) hybrid structure integrated with a resonant cavity. The covert structural features encoded in random colored patterns, optical reflection spectra, and Raman spectra constitute three classes of anti-counterfeiting signatures, which originate from the AuNC-covered Gr, which initiates plasmonic and thermal couplings. The attendant inverted thermal distribution is presumed to confine the structural features to the AuNC-Gr interface while leaving no detectable traces on the surface of AuNC/Gr even under advanced high-resolution equipment. Therefore, the proposed approach achieves multilevel anti-counterfeiting accomplishing physically unclonable functions in the form of random colored patterns, reflection spectra, and Raman spectra. As the first report for realizing remarkable optical modulation (i.e., random colored patterns) without any surface trace or damage via fs-laser-AuNC/Gr interaction, our study also discloses the outstanding performance of Gr in fs-laser-induced optothermoplasmonic lithography on near-percolation metal films. Simultaneously, the demonstrated fs-laser-processed plasmonic hybrid structure in conjunction with a resonant cavity is anticipated to expand the encoding capabilities for nanoscale anti-counterfeiting while avoiding the risk of being imitated because of the covert structural features.

Efficient Protection of Silver Nanowire Transparent Electrodes by All-Biorenewable Layer-by-Layer Assembled Thin Films

An efficient protection strategy for silver nanowire-based transparent electrodes (AgNW TEs) is developed to enhance their poor adhesion force on substrates and thermal, optical, chemical, and electrical stabilities. Chitin nanofibers (CNFs) and alkali lignin (AL), which possess high mechanical property, a gas/moisture barrier, and UV absorption properties, are successively assembled on AgNW TEs through layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly based on their oppositely charged surfaces. The formation of LBL-assembled CNFs and AL (CNF/AL)₁₀ bilayers, where 10 is the optimized number of bilayers, on the aldehyde-modified AgNW (Al-AgNW) TEs does not deteriorate their electrical conductivity (17.3 ± 2.1 Ω/□) and transmittance (90.1 ± 0.3% at 550 nm), and the (CNF/AL)₁₀ bilayer-coated Al-AgNW [(CNF/AL)₁₀@Al-AgNW] TEs present considerable enhancement in their adhesion force and thermal, optical, chemical, and electrical durability. In detail, their optoelectrical properties are stable over 200 cycles of the scotch peel-off test, for 10 h sonication, up to 350 °C, under UV/O₃ treatment for 100 min, in 10% HCl and 28% NH₃ for 6 and 12 h, and at an electrical potential up to 14 V, respectively. These features make (CNF/AL)₁₀@Al-AgNW TEs suitable as a durable high-performance transparent heater.

2D materials: increscent quantum flatland with immense potential for applications

Quantum flatland i.e., the family of two dimensional (2D) quantum materials has become increscent and has already encompassed elemental atomic sheets (Xenes), 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), 2D metal nitrides/carbides/carbonitrides (MXenes), 2D metal oxides, 2D metal phosphides, 2D metal halides, 2D mixed oxides, etc. and still new members are being explored. Owing to the occurrence of various structural phases of each 2D material and each exhibiting a unique electronic structure; bestows distinct physical and chemical properties. In the early years, world record electronic mobility and fractional quantum Hall effect of graphene attracted attention. Thanks to excellent electronic mobility, and extreme sensitivity of their electronic structures towards the adjacent environment, 2D materials have been employed as various ultrafast precision sensors such as gas/fire/light/strain sensors and in trace-level molecular detectors and disease diagnosis. 2D materials, their doped versions, and their hetero layers and hybrids have been successfully employed in electronic/photonic/optoelectronic/spintronic and straintronic chips. In recent times, quantum behavior such as the existence of a superconducting phase in moiré hetero layers, the feasibility of hyperbolic photonic metamaterials, mechanical metamaterials with negative Poisson ratio, and potential usage in second/third harmonic generation and electromagnetic shields, etc. have raised the expectations further. High surface area, excellent young's moduli, and anchoring/coupling capability bolster hopes for their usage as nanofillers in polymers, glass, and soft metals. Even though lab-scale demonstrations have been showcased, large-scale applications such as solar cells, LEDs, flat panel displays, hybrid energy storage, catalysis (including water splitting and CO₂ reduction), etc. will catch up. While new members of the flatland family will be invented, new methods of large-scale synthesis of defect-free crystals will be explored and novel applications will emerge, it is expected. Achieving a high level of in-plane doping in 2D materials without adding defects is a challenge to work on. Development of understanding of inter-layer coupling and its effects on electron injection/excited state electron transfer at the 2D-2D interfaces will lead to future generation heterolayer devices and sensors.

Preventing colour fading in artworks with graphene veils

Modern and contemporary art materials are generally prone to irreversible colour changes upon exposure to light and oxidizing agents. Graphene can be produced in thin large sheets, blocks ultraviolet light, and is impermeable to oxygen, moisture and corrosive agents; therefore, it has the potential to be used as a transparent layer for the protection of art objects in museums, during storage and transportation. Here we show that a single-layer or multilayer graphene veil, produced by chemical vapour deposition, can be deposited over artworks to protect them efficiently against colour fading, with a protection factor of up to 70%. We also show that this process is reversible since the graphene protective layer can be removed using a soft rubber eraser without causing any damage to the artwork. We have also explored a complementary contactless graphene-based route for colour protection that is based on the deposition of graphene on picture framing glass for use when the direct application of graphene is not feasible due to surface roughness or artwork fragility. Overall, the present results are a proof of concept of the potential use of graphene as an effective and removable protective advanced material to prevent colour fading in artworks.

2D materials as a diagnostic platform for the detection and sensing of the SARS-CoV-2 virus: a bird's-eye view

Worldwide infections and fatalities caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its variants responsible for COVID-19 have significantly impeded the economic growth of many nations. People in many nations have lost their livelihoods, it has severely impacted international relations and, most importantly, health infrastructures across the world have been tormented. This pandemic has already left footprints on human psychology, traits, and priorities and is certainly going to lead towards a new world order in the future. As always, science and technology have come to the rescue of the human race. The prevention of infection by instant and repeated cleaning of surfaces that are most likely to be touched in daily life and sanitization drives using medically prescribed sanitizers and UV irradiation of textiles are the first steps to breaking the chain of transmission. However, the real challenge is to develop and uplift medical infrastructure, such as diagnostic tools capable of prompt diagnosis and instant and economic medical treatment that is available to the masses. Two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as graphene, are atomic sheets that have been in the news for quite some time due to their unprecedented electronic mobilities, high thermal conductivity, appreciable thermal stability, excellent anchoring capabilities, optical transparency, mechanical flexibility, and a unique capability to integrate with arbitrary surfaces. These attributes of 2D materials make them lucrative for use as an active material platform for authentic and prompt (within minutes) disease diagnosis via electrical or optical diagnostic tools or via electrochemical diagnosis. We present the opportunities provided by 2D materials as a platform for SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis.

Graphene-assisted preparation of large-scale single-crystal Ag(111) nanoparticle arrays for surface-enhanced Raman scattering

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of metal nanostructures has broad application prospects in the fields of sensing, energy, catalysis and optics. This paper reports a graphene-assisted method for preparing large-scale single-crystal Ag(111) nanoparticle (NP) arrays based on the ion implantation technique. By surface periodic patterning treatment and annealing of the implanted sample, regularly arranged Ag NPs can be prepared on the sample surface. A new application for graphene is proposed, that is, as a perfect barrier layer to prevent metal atoms from evaporating or diffusing. All the Ag NPs show (111) crystal orientation. Besides, the Ag atoms are covered by graphene immediately when they precipitate from the substrate, which can prevent them from being oxidized. On the basis of this structure, as one of the applications of the metal SPR, we have measured the surface-enhanced Raman scattering effect and found that the G peak of the Raman spectrum of the graphene achieved about 20 times enhancement.

Borophene: New Sensation in Flatland

Borophene, a 2D allotrope of boron and the lightest elemental Dirac material, is the latest very promising 2D material owing to its unique structural and electronic characteristics of the X₃ and β₁₂ phases. The high atomic density on ridgelines of the β₁₂ phase of borophene provides a substantial orbital overlap, which leads to an excellent electron density in the conduction level and thus to a highly metallic behavior. These unique structural characteristics and electronic properties of borophene attract significant scientific interest. Herein, approaches for crystal growth/synthesis of these unique nanostructures and their potential technological applications are discussed. Various substrate-supported ultrahigh-vacuum growth techniques for borophene, such as molecular beam epitaxy, atomic layer deposition, and chemical vapor deposition, along with their challenges, are also summarized. The sonochemical exfoliation and modified Hummer's technique for the synthesis of free-standing borophene are also discussed. Solution-phase exfoliation seems to address the scalability issues and expands the applications of these unique materials to various fields, including renewable energy devices and ultrafast sensors. Furthermore, the electronic, optical, thermal, and elastic properties of borophene are thoroughly discussed and are compared with those of graphene and its "cousins." Numerous frontline applications are envisaged and an outlook is presented.

Graphene/PbS-Quantum Dots/Graphene Sandwich Structures Enabled by Laser Shock Imprinting for High Performance Photodetectors

Quantum dots (QDs) integrated 2-dimensional (2D) materials have great potential for photodetector applications due to the excellent light absorption of QDs and ultrafast carrier transportation of 2D materials. However, there is a main issue that prevents efficient carrier transportation and ideal performance of photodetectors: the high interfacial resistance between 2D materials and QDs due to the bad contacts between 2D/0D interface, which makes sluggish carrier transfer from QDs to 2D materials. Here, a sandwich structure (graphene/PbS-QDs/graphene) with seamless 2D/0D contact was fabricated by laser shock imprinting, which opto-mechanically tunes the morphology of 2D materials to perfectly wrap on 0D materials and efficiently collect carriers from the PbS-QDs. It is found that this seamless integrated 2D/0D/2D structure significantly enhanced the carrier transmission, photoresponse gain (by 2×), response time (by 20×), and photoresponse speed (by 13×). The response time (∼30 ms) and I_p/ I_d ratio (13.2) are both over 10× better than the reported hybrid graphene photodetectors. This is due to the tight contact and efficient gate-modulated carrier injection from PbS-QDs to graphene. The gate voltage dictates whether electrons or holes dominate the carrier injection from PbS-QDs to graphene.

1D Cu@Ni nanorods anchored on 2D reduced graphene oxide with interfacial engineering to enhance microwave absorption properties

In this work, one-dimensional core–shell Cu@Ni nanorods which were anchored on two dimensional reduced graphene oxide (rGO) heterostructures were successfully prepared by a simple co-reduction method.

Graphene Coatings as Barrier Layers to Prevent the Water-Induced Corrosion of Silicate Glass

Corrosion-protective coatings for silicate glass based on the transfer of one or two layers of graphene grown on copper by chemical vapor deposition have been demonstrated. The effectiveness of graphene to act as a glass corrosion inhibitor was evaluated by water immersion testing. After 120 days of immersion in water, bare glass samples had a significant increase in surface roughness and defects, which resulted in a marked reduction in fracture strength. In contrast, the single- and double-layer graphene-coated glasses experienced negligible changes in both fracture strength and surface roughness. The anticorrosion mechanism was also studied.

Improved Performance by SiO2 Hollow Nanospheres for Silver Nanowire-Based Flexible Transparent Conductive Films

Flexible transparent conductive films (TCFs) have attracted tremendous interest thanks to the rapid development of portable/flexible/wearable electronics. TCFs on the basis of silver nanowires (AgNWs) with excellent performance are becoming an efficient alternative to replace the brittle transparent metal oxide. In this study, a promising method was developed by introducing SiO₂ hollow nanospheres (SiO₂-HNSs) into the film to significantly improve the performance of AgNW-based TCFs. Since SiO₂-HNSs have opposite charges to AgNWs, the strong attraction had promoted a uniform distribution of AgNWs and made the distance between AgNWs closer, which could decrease the contact resistance greatly. The introduction of SiO₂ layer remarkably enhanced the transmission of visible light and the conductivity. In addition, the TCFs constructed by AgNWs and SiO₂-HNSs showed much higher thermal stability and adhesive force than those by only AgNWs. As an example, the transmission of AgNW/SiO₂-HNS-coated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) could increase about 14.3% in comparison to AgNW-coated PET. Typically, a AgNW/SiO₂-HNS-based TCF with a sheet resistance of about 33 Ω/sq and transmittance of about 98.0% (excluding substrate) could be obtained with excellent flexibility, adhesion, and thermal stability. At last some devices were fabricated.

Nanoscale Chemical and Electrical Stabilities of Graphene-covered Silver Nanowire Networks for Transparent Conducting Electrodes

The hybrid structure of Ag nanowires (AgNWs) covered with graphene (Gr) shows synergetic effects on the performance of transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs). However, these effects have been mainly observed via large-scale characterization, and precise analysis at the nanoscale level remains inadequate. Here, we present the nanoscale verification and visualization of the improved chemical and electrical stabilities of Gr-covered AgNW networks using conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) combined with the gas cluster ion beam (GCIB) sputtering technique. Specifically by transferring island Gr on top of the AgNW network, we were able to create samples in which both covered and uncovered AgNWs are simultaneously accessible to various surface-characterization techniques. Furthermore, our ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation elucidated the specific mechanistic pathway and a strong propensity for AgNW sulfidation, even in the presence of ambient oxidant gases.

The role of graphene formed on silver nanowire transparent conductive electrode in ultra-violet light emitting diodes

This paper reports a highly reliable transparent conductive electrode (TCE) that integrates silver nanowires (AgNWs) and high-quality graphene as a protecting layer. Graphene with minimized defects and large graphene domains has been successfully obtained through a facile two-step growth approach. Ultraviolet light emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) were fabricated with AgNWs or hybrid electrodes where AgNWs were combined with two-step grown graphene (A-2GE) or conventional one-step grown graphene (A-1GE). The device performance and reliability of the UV-LEDs with three different electrodes were compared. The A-2GE offered high figure of merit owing to the excellent UV transmittance and reduced sheet resistance. As a consequence, the UV-LEDs made with A-2GE demonstrated reduced forward voltage, enhanced electroluminescence (EL) intensity, and alleviated efficiency droop. The effects of joule heating and UV light illumination on the electrode stability were also studied. The present findings prove superior performance of the A-2GE under high current injection and continuous operation of UV LED, compared to other electrodes. From our observation, the A-2GE would be a reliable TCE for high power UV-LEDs.
