Abstract
Developing efficient and effective photocatalysts is essential for organic dyes and antibiotic degradation in wastewater. Ni-doped α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 (NFGCN) photocatalysts were synthesised through a simple co-precipitation technique and used for the ciprofloxacin (CIP) and methylene blue (MB) degradation through photocatalysis. The XRD data indicated the crystallinity of the synthesised iron oxide and its composites with rhombohedral structures with the nature of high purity. The morphology of the NFGCN composite revealed the construction of Ni-doped α-Fe2O3 (NFO) nanoparticles onto the g-C3N4 (GCN) sheet surface along with the close interface that induced a Z-scheme heterojunction. The synthesised photocatalysts showed photocatalytic activity with good degradation efficiency of 82.1 % and 92.0 % for CIP and MB, respectively, within 120 min under solar light exposure. The improved photocatalytic degradation efficiency was attained owing to the synthesised composite's enhanced light absorption in the visible range. The narrow band gap energies and interaction between Ni-doped α-Fe2O3 and g-C3N4 displayed by these materials result in enhanced visible light absorption, effective charge carrier separation and transportation to the pollutants. CIP degradation pathways were investigated utilising the LC-MS analysis. NFGCN composites showed good recyclability (5 cycles), magnetic retrievability, and stability for degrading organic and emerging pollutants from wastewater through photocatalysis.

Abstract
Photocatalysis is realized by the design of a visible-light-active catalyst with robust redox capacity and broad absorption. In this study, a series of novel Z-scheme CoNiWO4/Ph-gC3N4 photocatalysts are synthesized to improve their redox property and photocatalytic activity toward broad visible light absorption. An intimate stable heterojunction is made between cobalt-nickel tungstate (CoNiWO4) and phenyl-doped graphitic carbon nitride (Ph-gC3N4), and its physicochemical properties are studied. The bifunctional properties of all of the synthesized materials were assessed by studying the decomposition of bisphenol A (BPA) and methyl orange (MO) dye as model pollutants, followed by an evaluation of their anticancer activity on human lung cancer cell lines. The photocatalyst with 20 wt % CoNiWO4 heterocomposite showed an enhanced response toward the removal of cancerous cells. The synthesized pristine CoNiWO4 and Ph-gC3N4 exhibit well-matched band structures and, hence, make it easier to create a Z-scheme heterocomposite. This may increase the lifetime of photoinduced charge carriers with a high redox power, thereby improving their photocatalytic and anticancer activity. An extensive analysis of the mechanism demonstrates that hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radical anions (•O2-) are responsible for the degradation of organic compounds via Z-scheme charge transfer approach. These findings point toward a new route for creating effective Co-Ni tungstate-based direct Z-scheme photocatalysts for various redox processes, particularly the mineralization of resistant organic molecules.

Abstract
In this study, we utilized calcination and simple impregnation methods to successfully fabricate bare g-C3N4 (GCN) and x% Ag/g-C3N4 (x% AgGCN) composite photocatalysts with various weight percentages (x = 1, 3, 5, and 7 wt.%). The synthesized bare and composite photocatalysts were analyzed to illustrate their phase formation, functional group, morphology, and optical properties utilizing XRD, FT-IR, UV-Vis DRS, PL, FE-SEM, and the EDS. The photodegradation rate of MO under solar light irradiation was measured, and the 5% AgGCN composite photocatalyst showed higher photocatalytic activity (99%), which is very high compared to other bare and composite photocatalysts. The MO dye degradation rate constant with the 5% AgGCN photocatalyst exhibits 14.83 times better photocatalytic activity compared to the bare GCN catalyst. This photocatalyst showed good efficiency in the degradation of MO dye and demonstrated cycling stability even in the 5th successive photocatalytic reaction cycle. The higher photocatalytic activity of the 5% AgGCN composite catalyst for the degradation of MO dye is due to the interaction of Ag with GCN and the localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag. The scavenger study results indicate that O2●- radicals play a major role in MO dye degradation. A possible charge-transfer mechanism is proposed to explain the solar-light-driven photocatalyst of GCN.

Abstract
The construction of type-II or S-scheme heterojunctions can effectively accelerate the directional migration of charge carriers and inhibit the recombination of electron-hole pairs to improve the catalytic performance of the composite catalyst; therefore, the construction and formation mechanism of a heterojunction are worth further investigation. Herein, Cu2O@Cu4(SO4)(OH)6·H2O core-shell polyhedral heterojunctions were fabricated via in situ etching Cu2O with octahedral, cuboctahedral, and cubic shapes by sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3). Cu2O@Cu4(SO4)(OH)6·H2O polyhedral heterojunctions demonstrated obviously enhanced sterilization and degradation performance than the corresponding single Cu2O polyhedra and Cu4(SO4)(OH)6·H2O. When Cu2O with a different morphology contacts with Cu4(SO4)(OH)6·H2O, a built-in electric field is established at the interface due to the difference in Fermi level (Ef); meanwhile, the direction of band bending and the band alignment are determined. These lead to the different migration pathways of electrons and holes, and thereby, a type-II or S-scheme heterojunction is constructed. The results showed that octahedral o-Cu2O@Cu4(SO4)(OH)6·H2O is an S-scheme heterojunction; however, cuboctahedral co-Cu2O@Cu4(SO4)(OH)6·H2O and cubic c-Cu2O@Cu4(SO4)(OH)6·H2O are type-II heterojunctions. By means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), and Mott-Schottky analyses, the band alignments, Fermi levels, and band offsets (ΔECB, ΔEVB) of Cu2O@Cu4(SO4)(OH)6·H2O polyhedral heterojunctions were estimated; the results indicated that the catalytic ability of the composite catalyst is determined by the type of heterojunction and the sizes of band offsets. Cubic c-Cu2O@Cu4(SO4)(OH)6·H2O has the strongest driving force (namely, biggest band offsets) to accelerate charge migration and effectively separate charge carriers, so it exhibits the strongest catalytic bactericidal and degrading abilities.

Abstract
Herein, we report the modification of TiO2 nanostructures with two different metal chalcogenides (CuS or MoS2). The effect of the preparation scheme (hydrothermal and coprecipitation methods) and the mass ratio of metal chalcogenides were investigated. The as-synthesized photocatalyst nanocomposites were fully characterized by various techniques. Moreover, the photo/electrochemical analysis were performed to investigate the photoelectric properties and photocatalytic mechanism. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated using two test reactions. In the case of H2 generation via water splitting, it was found that 0.5 wt% CuS-TiO2 synthesized via the coprecipitation method exhibited an initial hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 2.95 mmol h-1 g-1. While, the optimized 3 wt% MoS2-TiO2 synthesized by the hydrothermal method, showed an HER of 1.7 mmol h-1 g-1. Moreover, the degradation efficiency of methylene blue dye was 98% under UV-Vis light irradiation within 2 h over 0.5 CT_PP and 3MT_HT. Under visible irradiation, the degradation efficiency was 100% and 96% for 3MT_PP and 0.5CT_HT in the presence of H2O2, respectively. This study has proven that metal chalcogenides can act as effective, stable, and low-cost bifunctional co-catalysts to enhance the overall photocatalytic performance.

Abstract
Growing industry and its effluents create a serious environmental concern. Various industrial wastes such as toxic dyes and volatile organic compounds are posing a threat to a clean environment because of their non-biodegradable nature and high chemical stability. In recent years, the degradation of toxic dyes and drugs by photo-catalysts has gained much importance and proved a successful approach to capture light by hybrid photo-catalysts for decomposing toxic organic molecules. This work presents the synthesis of a poly(o-anisidine)-based composite with graphitic carbon nitride and zinc oxide (POA/g-C3N4/ZnO) and its utilization as a photo-catalyst. Various analytical techniques investigated the synthesized photo-catalysts’ chemical structure, crystallinity, and morphology. The degradation of Congo red dye evaluated the efficiency of the photo-catalyst in an aqueous medium under ultraviolet light. It was revealed that the photo-catalytic activity of the synthesized POA/g-C3N4/ZnO composites show 81.43%, 92.28%, and 87.05% degradation. This sustainable composite will be highly beneficial to treat industrial wastewater to make our environment clean.

Abstract
In order to make the synthesis of pharmaceutically active carbonitriles efficient, environmentally friendly, and sustainable, the method is regularly examined. Here, we introduce a brand-new, very effective Cu3TiO4/g-C3N5 photocatalyst for the production of compounds containing chromene-3-carbonitriles. The direct Z-Scheme photo-generated charge transfer mechanism used by the Cu3TiO4/g-C3N5 photocatalyst results in a suppressed rate of electron-hole pair recombination and an increase in photocatalytic activity. Experiments showed that the current method has some advantages, such as using an environmentally friendly and sustainable photocatalyst, having a simple procedure, quick reaction times, a good product yield (82–94%), and being able to reuse the photocatalyst multiple times in a row without noticeably decreasing its photocatalytic performance.

Abstract
Huge demands for photocatalytically efficient visible-light-induced catalysts have spurred widespread interest in building adaptable heterojunctions. Here, we used in situ thermal polymerization to synthesise the Z-scheme Bi2O3/g-C3N4 heterojunction. The optical, structural, chemical, compositional and photocatalytic behaviours of the samples were analysed through various analytical techniques and photocatalytic methylene blue (MB) dye degradation reaction. Among the various ratios of Bi2O3/g-C3N4 heterojunction composites, the 1:1 ratio showed improved visible-light-induced catalytic activity, which attained 91.2% degradation efficiency after 120 min of visible-light exposure. The dye degradation efficiency was calculated under various environmental conditions by varying the dye concentration, solution pH and catalyst dosage. A improved Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism was proposed in light of the results. A potential mechanism was suggested to explain the photocatalytic activity, and trapping experiments supported it. Last but not least, this strategy might be helpful to prepare the heterojunction photocatalyst for the degradation of organic pigments.

Abstract
Although graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has been reported for several decades, it is still an active material at the present time owing to its amazing properties exhibited in many applications, including photocatalysis. With the rapid development of characterization techniques, in-depth exploration has been conducted to reveal and utilize the natural properties of g-C3N4 through modifications. Among these, the assembly of g-C3N4 with metal oxides is an effective strategy which can not only improve electron-hole separation efficiency by forming a polymer-inorganic heterojunction, but also compensate for the redox capabilities of g-C3N4 owing to the varied oxidation states of metal ions, enhancing its photocatalytic performance. Herein, we summarized the research progress on the synthesis of g-C3N4 and its coupling with single- or multiple-metal oxides, and its photocatalytic applications in energy production and environmental protection, including the splitting of water to hydrogen, the reduction of CO2 to valuable fuels, the degradation of organic pollutants and the disinfection of bacteria. At the end, challenges and prospects in the synthesis and photocatalytic application of g-C3N4-based composites are proposed and an outlook is given.

Abstract
In this study, a new solar light-driven magnetic heterogeneous photocatalyst, denoted as ZnO/NiFe2O4/Co3O4, is successfully prepared. FT-IR, XPS, XRD, VSM, DRS, FESEM, TEM, EDS, elemental mapping, and ICP analysis are accomplished for full characterization of this catalyst. FESEM and TEM analyses of the photocatalyt clearly affirm the formation of a hexagonal structure of ZnO (25–40 nm) and the cubic structure of NiFe2O4 and Co3O4 (10–25 nm). Furthermore, the HRTEM images of the photocatalyst verify some key lattice fringes related to the photocatalyt structure. These data are in very good agreement with XRD analysis results. According to the ICP analysis, the molar ratio of ZnO/NiFe2O4/Co3O4 composite is obtained to be 1:0.75:0.5. Moreover, magnetization measurements reveals that the ZnO/NiFe2O4/Co3O4 has a superparamagnetic behavior with saturation magnetization of 32.38 emu/g. UV-vis DRS analysis indicates that the photocatalyst has a boosted and strong light response. ZnO/NiFe2O4/Co3O4, with band gap energy of about 2.65 eV [estimated according to the Tauc plot of (αhν)2vs. hν], exhibits strong potential towards the efficacious degradation of tetracycline (TC) by natural solar light. It is supposed that the synergistic optical effects between ZnO, NiFe2O4, and Co3O4 species is responsible for the increased photocatalytic performance of this photocatalyst under the optimal conditions (photocatalyst dosage = 0.02 g L−1, TC concentration = 30 mg L−1, pH = 9, irradiation time = 20 min, and TC degradation efficiency = 98%). The kinetic study of this degradation process is evaluated and it is well-matched with the pseudo-first-order kinetics. Based on the radical quenching tests, it can be perceived that •O2− species and holes are the major contributors in such a process, whereas the •OH radicals identify to have no major participation. The application of this methodology is implemented in a facile and low-cost photocatalytic approach to easily degrade TC by using a very low amount of the photocatalyst under natural sunlight source in an air atmosphere. The convenient magnetic isolation and reuse of the photocatalyst, and almost complete mineralization of TC (based on TOC analysis), are surveyed too, which further highlights the operational application of the current method. Notably, this method has the preferred performance among the very few methods reported for the photocatalytic degradation of TC under natural sunlight. It is assumed that the achievements of this photocatalytic method have opened an avenue for sustainable environmental remediation of a broad range of contaminants.

Abstract
The Fenton reaction has attracted extensive attention due to its potential to be a highly efficient and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment technology. Noble copper-doped carbon dots (CuCDs) are prepared through a simple one-step hydrothermal method with 3,4-dihydroxyhydrocinnamic acid, 2,2'-(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylamine) and copper chloride, endowing the Fenton reaction with enhanced catalytic activity for rhodamine B (RhB) degradation. The effects of the concentration of CuCDs, temperature, pH, oxygen (O2), metal ions and polymers on the catalytic activity of CuCDs are investigated. It is worth noting that electron transfer happening on the surface of CuCDs plays a vital role in the RhB degradation process. As evidenced by radical scavenger experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) studies, CuCDs significantly boost the formation of hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2), facilitating the Fenton reaction for RhB degradation. Due to the strong oxidation of ROS generated by the Fe2+ + H2O2 + CuCD system, RhB degradation may involve the cleavage of the chromophore aromatic ring and the de-ethylation process. Additionally, the toxicity of RhB degradation filtrates is assessed in vitro and in vivo. The as-prepared CuCDs may be promising catalytic agents for the enhancement of the Fenton reaction.

Abstract
Solar-driven advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) via direct photodegradation or indirect photocatalytic activation of typical oxidants, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and peroxydisulfate (PDS), have been deemed to be an efficient technology for wastewater remediation. Artificial Z-scheme structured materials represent a promising class of photocatalysts due to their spatially separated charge carriers and strong redox abilities. Herein, we summarize the development of metal-free graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4, CN)-based direct and indirect Z-scheme photocatalysts for solar-driven AOPs in removing organic pollutants from water. In the work, the classification of AOPs, definition and validation of Z-schemes are summarized firstly. The innovative engineering strategies (e.g., morphology and dimensionality control, element doping, defect engineering, cocatalyst loading, and tandem Z-scheme construction) over CN-based direct Z-scheme structure are then examined. Rational design of indirect CN-based Z-scheme systems using different charge mediators, such as solid conductive materials and soluble ion pairs, is further discussed. Through examining the relationship between the Z-scheme structure and activity (charge transfer and separation, light absorption, and reaction kinetics), we aim to provide more insights into the construction strategies and structure modification on CN-based Z-schemes towards improving their catalytic performances in AOPs. Lastly, limitations, challenges, and perspectives on future development in this emerging field are proposed.

Abstract
At present, the research focus has been aimed at the pursuit of the design and synthesis of catalysts for effective photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater, and further exploration of novel materials of the photodegradation catalyst. In this paper, the Sol-gel route after thermal treatment was used to produce NiFe2O4 carbon aerogel (NiFe2O4-CA) nanocomposites with cotton linter cellulose as the precursor of aerogel, by co-precipitating iron and nickel salts onto its substrate. The structure and composition of these materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Raman spectra, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM), high-resolution scanning electron microscope mapping (SEM-mapping), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET)'s surface area. The magnetic properties of the material were analyzed by a vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM). Moreover, diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and photo-luminescence spectroscopy (PL) characterized the photoelectric properties of this cellulose-aerogels-based NiFe2O4-CA. Methylene blue (MB) acted as the simulated pollutant, and the photocatalytic activity of NiFe2O4-CA nanocomposites under visible light was evaluated by adjusting H2O2 content and the pH value. The results showed that the optical absorption range of nickel ferrite was broadened by doping cellulose-aerogels-based carbon, which exerted more positive effects on photocatalytic reactions. This is because the doping of this aerogel carbon promoted a more uniform distribution of NiFe2O4 particles. Given the Methylene blue (MB) degradation reaction conformed to the first-order kinetic equation, the NiFe2O4-CA nanocomposites conducted excellent catalytic activity by maintaining almost 99% of the removal of MB (60 mg/L) within 180 min and upheld excellent stability over four consecutive cycles. This study indicated that NiFe2O4-CA nanocomposites reserved the potential as a future effective treatment of dye wastewater.

Abstract
Although photocatalytic technology has emerged as an effective means of alleviating the projected future fuel crisis by converting sunlight directly into chemical energy, no visible-light-driven, low-cost, and highly stable photocatalyst has been developed to date. Due to considerably higher interfacial contact with numerous reactive sites, effective charge transmission and separation ability, and strong redox potentials, the focus has now shifted to 2D/2D heterojunction systems, which have exhibited effective photocatalytic performance. The fundamentals of 2D/2D photocatalysis for different applications and the classification of 2D/2D materials are first explained in this paper, followed by strategies to improve the photocatalytic performance of various 2D/2D heterojunction systems. Following that, current breakthroughs in 2D/2D metal-based and metal-free heterojunction photocatalysts, as well as their applications for H2 evolution via water splitting, CO2 reduction, and N2 fixation, are discussed. Finally, a brief overview of current constraints and predicted results for 2D/2D heterojunction systems is also presented. This paper lays out a strategy for developing efficient 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts and sophisticated technology for solar fuel applications in order to address the energy issue.

Abstract
Recently, photo-Fenton technology has been widely used to degrade tetracycline (TC) because of its great efficiency and wide application range. Herein, Fe-Ni layered double hydroxides (FeNi-LDH)/Ti3C2 photo-Fenton system was constructed in this study. The results showed the introduction of Ti3C2 solved some problems of FeNi-LDH such as poor conductivity, easy aggregation, and high recombination rate of photoelectron. Benefiting from these advantages, FeNi-LDH/Ti3C2 exhibited excellent TC removal rate of 94.7% while pure FeNi-LDH was only 54%. Besides, FeNi-LDH/Ti3C2 possessed strong pH tolerance (2-11) and the removal efficiency was still up to 82% after the four-cycle experiment. Furthermore, the quenching experiments revealed the reaction mechanism, where ∙OH and ·O2- were the primary active radicals for degrading TC. Last, the results of the simulated wastewater treatment and the inorganic ion interference tests showed that FeNi-LDH/Ti3C2 possessed practical application potential. In brief, this study shows that FeNi-LDH/Ti3C2 can offer a certain theoretical basis for the actual development of hydrotalcite in heterogeneous photo-Fenton systems.

Abstract
In the present work, we prepared N-doped ZnO by a facile chemical vapor deposition method and used it for the degradation of wastewater containing noxious rose bengal (RB) dye under visible-light stimulation. The as-prepared N-doped ZnO and the undoped ZnO (used as a control sample) were characterized by numerous spectroscopic and microscopic methods. These analyzing results confirmed the successful formation of the N-doped ZnO compound and it could be implemented for wastewater treatment. Interestingly, the N-doped ZnO material confirmed the maximum RB dye degradation efficiency (96.90%) and was shown to be 154% more efficient than undoped ZnO (62.95%) within 100 min of visible-light irradiation. The bandgap energy was considerably decreased after the incorporation of N onto the ZnO matrix compared to undoped ZnO. The improved photocatalytic performance is because of the reduction of bandgap energy, which suppressed the electron–hole pair recombination. In addition, a plausible photodegradation mechanism of RB dye was discussed employing N-doped ZnO under visible light. The findings show that our as-synthesized product can be used to eliminate contaminants, which provides a new avenue for effective implications.

Abstract
Exogenous stimulation catalytic therapy has received enormous attention as it holds great promise to address global medical issues. However, the therapeutic effect of catalytic therapy is seriously restricted by the fast charge recombination and the limited utilization of exogenous stimulation by catalysts. In the past few decades, many strategies have been developed to overcome the above serious drawbacks, among which heterojunctions are the most widely used and promising strategy. This review attempts to summarize the recent progress in the rational design and fabrication of heterojunction nanomedicine, such as semiconductor-semiconductor heterojunctions (including type I, type II, type III, PN, and Z-scheme junctions) and semiconductor-metal heterojunctions (including Schottky, Ohmic, and localized surface plasmon resonance-mediated junctions). The catalytic mechanisms and properties of the above junction systems are also discussed in relation to biomedical applications, especially cancer treatment and sterilization. This review concludes with a summary of the challenges and some perspectives on future directions in this exciting and still evolving field of research.

Abstract
In the current work, we present the facile one-pot synthesis of 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 wt% of Ni doped ZnO nanoparticles (Ni:ZnO NPs) through combustion route at 550 °C. Structural and vibrational studies approve the synthesis of monophasic hexagonal Ni:ZnO NPs. The crystallite size was calculated to be in the range of 36-60 nm for pure and doped samples. The composition of all elements in the final product along with their homogeneity, was approved through EDX/FESEM e-mapping analysis. The morphology and phase confirmation of the prepared samples was investigated through FESEM and TEM/HRTEM analyses. TEM/HRTEM study shows that the size of grains is within the range of 100 nm and grown along the c-axis as the lattice spacing is found ∼2.6005 Å. Diffused reflectance study was used to estimate the energy gap for all samples and found to reduce from 3.287 eV for pure to 3.258 eV for 3.0 wt% Ni doping. From an applications point of view, the photocatalytic performance of Ni:ZnO NPs was studied, and with 3.0 wt% of Ni doping in ZnO the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and tetracycline (TCN) pollutants were found to be remarkably improved.

Abstract
In the conventional Fenton system, the relatively low efficiency of Fe (II) regeneration is a significant drawback. To address this shortcoming, a novel floating Z-scheme photo-Fenton catalyst FeMo3Ox/g-C3N4/EP was prepared by a facile dip-calcination method, in which iron and molybdenum oxides with mixed valence states (FeMo3Ox) and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) were loaded on the expanded perlite. The removal efficiencies reached the maximum at 98.0%, 93.1% and 97.1% for tetracycline, oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline, respectively, after 60 min dark adsorption and 60 min photo-Fenton process. The aid of dual ion (Fe and Mo) synergy system and photoreduction by Z-scheme photocatalyst enhanced the Fe (II) regeneration, resulting in the excellent performance. Radical scavenger experiment, electron spin resonance spectra (ESR) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) were used to confirm the mechanism of free radicals' formation and Fe/Mo redox cycling. ·OH, ·O2- and 1O2 played important roles in the pollutant's degradation, while the generation of ·O2- was enhanced due to the floatability in this system. The possible degradation pathways of TC were put forward according to the results of mass spectrum and Orbital-Weighted Fukui Function. Overall, this work provides new insights on the cooperation between iron-based mix oxides and semiconductor in the photo-Fenton system.

Abstract
An effective heterojunction with robust charge separation and enormous degradation efficiency is the major task for photocatalyst preparation. In this study, we have prepared the FeCo2O4-loaded g-C3N4 nanosheet by the sol-gel-assisted calcination method for photo-Fenton-like degradation under visible-light irradiation by activating persulfate. The nanocomposite exhibits a higher charge separation efficiency than pure g-C3N4 and FeCo2O4 for the degradation reaction against naproxen drugs. An effective interaction between the nanoparticles increases the degradation efficiency up to 91% with a synergistic index of 73.62%. Moreover, the nanocomposite exhibits a 78% mineralization efficiency against the naproxen pollutant under visible-light irradiation. For practical implementation, the degradation reaction was tested with various pH values, different water sources (DI, lake, and tap water), and light sources (LED (visible)/direct sunlight (UV-visible)). Moreover, the possible degradation mechanism predicted by the elemental trapping experiment and the recycling experiment clearly revealed that the heterojunction composite has a high enough degradation stability.

Abstract
Heterogeneous photocatalysis premised on advanced oxidation processes has witnessed a broad application perspective, including water purification and environmental remediation. In particular, the graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), an earth-abundant metal-free conjugated polymer, has acquired extensive application scope and interdisciplinary consideration owing to its outstanding structural and physicochemical properties. However, several issues such as the high recombination rate of the photo-generated electron-hole pairs, smaller specific surface area, and lower electrical conductivity curtail the catalytic efficacy of bulk g-C3N4. Another challenging task is separating the catalyst from the reaction medium, limiting their reusability and practical applications. Therefore, several methodologies are adopted strategically to tackle these issues. Attention is being paid, especially to the magnetic nanocomposites (NCs) based catalysts to enhance efficiency and proficient reusability property. This review summarizes the latest progress related to the design and development of magnetic g-C3N4-based NCs and their utilization in photocatalytic systems. The usefulness of the semiconductor heterojunctions on the catalytic activity, working mechanism, and degradation of pollutants are discussed in detail. The major challenges and prospects of using magnetic g-C3N4-based NCs for photocatalytic applications are highlighted in this report.

Abstract
The low band gap energy and high surface area two-dimensional materials allow it to tune its basic properties using surface decoration. Here, La3+ are decorated on two-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride using a simple and easily scalable chemisorption process with an adsorption capacity of 657.32 mg g-1. In the X-ray diffraction (XRD) study, the positive slope of the W-H plot elucidates the tensile strain generation (0.103) in La3+ ions decorated 2D-g-C3N4 (La3+-2D-g-C3N4). The high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) study and the higher ID/IG ratio (0.82) in the Raman spectroscopy study confirm the more defects intensification in La3+-2D-g-C3N4. The reduction in band gap energy for La3+-2D-g-C3N4 (from 2.83 eV to 2.21 eV) has shown a good correspondence with the band structures study as obtained from the DFT study. In the DFT study, the significant contributions of N atoms in charge transfer validate the N 1s findings from the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study for La3+-2D-g-C3N4. La3+-2D-g-C3N4 shows the photodegradation efficiency (93%) of ciprofloxacin under UV irradiation, which is superior to pristine 2D-g-C3N4 (82%) as well as other g-C3N4 based nanocatalysts. Also, La3+ decoration results in enhancement (32.3%) in photodegradation kinetics rate. The degradation and kinetics studies in the presence of different scavengers ensure that the O2- and OH- radicals are mostly responsible for the ciprofloxacin photodegradation. The Liquid chromatographic-mass spectroscopy and the high-performance liquid chromatography studies confirm the photodegradation. The reusability of La3+-2D-g-C3N4 is tested up to the fifth cycle. FTIR and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy confirm the stability of the used photocatalyst.

Abstract
The construction of a UV-Vis and direct sunlight functioning photocatalyst is a puzzling task for organic pollutant removal. Herein, we have fabricated Gd/N co-doped ZnO nanoparticles for the first-time using a simple co-precipitation method for photocatalytic degradation application. The heteroatom doping enhances the light absorption ability and acts as a photo-induced electron-hole separator by creating a trap state. Co-doped ZnO shows comparatively high photocatalytic degradation efficiency of about 87% and 93% under UV-Vis and direct solar light respectively. Moreover, the prepared photocatalyst exhibits excellent stability for the recycling process. Hence, we believe that this heteroatom co-doped ZnO photocatalyst is an auspicious material for the photocatalytic organic pollutant degradation reaction.
