Surface-Engineered Nanomaterials for Optical Array Based Sensing

Array based sensing governed by optical methods provides fast and economic way for detection of wide variety of analytes where the ideality of detection processes depends on the sensor element's versatile mode of interaction with multiple analytes in an unbiased manner. This can be achieved by either the receptor unit having multiple recognition moiety, or their surface property should possess tuning ability upon fabrication called surface engineering. Nanomaterials have a high surface to volume ratio, making them viable candidates for molecule recognition through surface adsorption phenomena, which makes it ideal to meet the above requirements. Most crucially, by engineering a nanomaterial's surface, one may produce cross-reactive responses for a variety of analytes while focusing solely on a single nanomaterial. Depending on the nature of receptor elements, in the last decade the array-based sensing has been considering as multimodal detection platform which operates through various pathway including single channel, multichannel, binding and indicator displacement assay, sequential ON-OFF sensing, enzyme amplified and nanozyme based sensing etc. In this review we will deliver the working principle for Array-based sensing by using various nanomaterials like nanoparticles, nanosheets, nanodots and self-assembled nanomaterials and their surface functionality for suitable molecular recognition.

A smartphone-based colorimetric assay using Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles as the nanoprobes for visual tracing of fluvoxamine in biofluids as a common suicide drug

In the present study, bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) consisting of gold (AuNPs) as the core and silver (AgNPs) as the shell have been synthesized and applied as the nanoprobe for detection of fluvoxamine (FXM) as the anti-depression drug. The physicochemical properties of the prepared citrate-capped Au@Ag core-shell NPs have been characterized by UV-Vis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) techniques. The design of the smartphone-based colorimetric FXM sensor relies on the fast hydrolysis of FXM under alkaline conditions by producing of 2-(Aminooxy)ethanamine without any significant peak at 400-700 nm. The interaction of the resulted molecule with the nanoprobe induced a red shift in the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak of the nanoprobe, which was accompanied by sharp and vivid color variations in the solution. A linear relationship between the absorption signal increasing by FXM concentration increasing from 1 µM to 10 µM presented a simple, low cost and minimally instrumented format for FXM quantification with a limit of detection (LOD) of 100 nM. The collected visual data with the elegant colorimetric response of the nanoprobe in the presence of FXM from Indian red to light red violet and bluish-purple color offered simple detection of FXM with the naked eye. The satisfactory results of the proposed cost-effective sensor in the rapid assay of FXM in human serum, urine, saliva and pharmaceutical samples guarantee the potential of the nanoprobe for on-site and visual determination of FXM in actual samples. The proposed sensor as the first non-invasive FXM sensor for saliva sample analysis may hold great promise to provide the technical support for the rapid and valid detection of FXM for forensic medicine and clinical organizations.

Resultant inward imbalanced seeding force (RIISF)-induced concave gold nanostar (CAuNS) for non-enzymatic electrocatalytic detection of serotonin and Kynurenine in human serum

CTAC-based gold nanoseed-induced concave curvature evolution of surface boundary planes from concave gold nanocube (CAuNC) to concave gold nanostar (CAuNS) has been achieved by a novel synthetic methodology simply by controlling the extent of seed used and hence the generated 'Resultant Inward Imbalanced Seeding Force (RIISF)'. The resultant CAuNS shows an excellent enhancement in catalytic activity compared to CAuNC and other intermediates as a function of curvature-induced anisotropy. Detailed characterization evaluates the presence of an enhanced number of multiple defect sites, high energy facets, larger surface area, and roughened surface which ultimately results in an increased mechanical strain, coordinately unsaturation, and multifacet-oriented anisotropic behavior suitable for positive influence on the binding affinity of CAuNSs. While different crystalline and structural parameters improve their catalytic activity, the resultant uniform three-dimensional (3D) platform shows comparatively easy pliability and well absorptivity on the glassy carbon electrode surface for increased shelf life, a uniform structure to confine a large extent of stoichiometric systems, and long-term stability under ambient conditions for making this newly developed material a unique nonenzymatic scalable universal electrocatalytic platform. With the help of various electrochemical measurements, the ability of the platform has been established by performing highly specific and sensitive detection of the two most important human bio messengers: Serotonin (STN) and Kynurenine (KYN) which are metabolites of L-Tryptophan in the human body system. The present study mechanistically surveys the role of seed-induced RIISF-modulated anisotropy in controlling the catalytic activity which offers a universal 3D electrocatalytic sensing tenet by an electrocatalytic approach.

Colorimetric sensor arrays for the differentiation of baijiu based on amino-acid-modified gold nanoparticles

It is of great significance for quality control to realize the discrimination for baijiu from different brands and origins. Strong-aroma-type baijiu (SAB), one of the most important Chinese aroma-type baijiu, exhibits the largest variety and market share. In this study, we proposed colorimetric sensor arrays based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) modified with different amino acids (AAs) to recognize the organic acids, and further distinguish different SABs. Three representative AAs, namely methionine (Met), tryptophan (Trp), and histidine (His), were selected to modify the AuNPs surface. The investigation of the effect of the main ingredients of SAB on AA@AuNPs aggregation confirmed that this aggregation mainly resulted from organic acids. Moreover, this aggregation was successfully used for differentiating 11 organic acids. Different pH conditions can not only cause changes of the content of organic acids in baijiu, but also disrupt the balance among flavor substances of baijiu to some extent. Consequently, the AA@AuNPs arrays under two pH conditions have been successfully applied to distinguish 14 kinds of SABs from different brands and origins. The proposed colorimetric sensor method is simple, rapid, and visualized and provides a potential application prospect for the quality control of baijiu and other alcoholic beverages.

Highly sensitive visual colorimetric sensor for trichlorfon detection based on the inhibition of metallization of gold nanorods

In this study, a highly sensitive visual colorimetric sensor was designed for the detection of trichlorfon based on inhibiting ascorbate oxidase (AAO)-induced metallization of gold nanorods (Au NRs). Ascorbic acid (AA) can reduce silver ion (Ag⁺) to metal silver (Ag) that will be deposited on the surface of Au NRs, which results in the blue shift of longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak of Au NRs, accompanying by perceptible color changes from red to cyan to red to yellow. In the presence of trichlorfon, the activity of AAO will be inhibited, resulting in less AA is hydrolyzed to dehydroascorbic acid (DHA), and therefore more Ag⁺ is reduced to Ag by AA. Under the optimized conditions, detection of trichlorfon has a wide linear range of 27.8-11111.1 μg/L with a limit of detection as low as 132.6 ng/L. Moreover, the sensor has a good sample spiked recovery (84.7-96.8%) for the determination of trichlorfon in lake water samples. The proposed method can achieve rapid analysis (about 10 min) of trichlorfon with simple operation when there are no other types of organophosphorus pesticides in the real samples.

Providing Multicolor Plasmonic Patterns with Au@Ag Core-Shell Nanostructures for Visual Discrimination of Biogenic Amines

Biogenic amines (BAs) are known as substantial indicators of the quality and safety of food. Developing rapid and visual detection methods capable of simultaneously monitoring BAs is highly desired due to their harmful effects on human health. In the present study, we have designed a multicolor sensor array consisting of two types of gold nanostructures (i.e., gold nanorods (AuNRs) and gold nanospheres (AuNSs)) for the discrimination and determination of critical BAs (i.e., spermine (SM), tryptamine (TT), ethylenediamine (EA), tyramine (TR), spermidine (SD), and histamine (HT)). The design principle of the probe was based on the metallization of silver ions on the surface of AuNRs and AuNSs in the presence of BAs, forming Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles. Changes in the surface composition, size, and aspect ratio of AuNSs and AuNRs induced a blue shift in the plasmonic band, which was accompanied by sharp and rainbowlike color variations in the solution. The collected data were visually assessed and statistically analyzed by various data visualization and pattern recognition methods. Namely, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and partial least squares (PLS) regression were employed for the qualitative and quantitative determination of BAs. The responses were linearly correlated to the concentrations of BAs in a wide range of 10-800, 20-800, 40-800, 40-800, 60-800, and 80-800 μmol L^-1 with the limit of detections of 2.46, 4.79, 8.58, 14.26, 10.03, and 27.29 μmol L^-1 for SD, SM, TT, HT, EA, and TR, respectively. Finally, the practical applicability of the sensor array was investigated by the determination of BAs in meat and fish samples by which the potential of the probe for on-site determination of food freshness/spoilage was successfully verified.

New application of a traditional method: colorimetric sensor array for reducing sugars based on the in-situ formation of core-shell gold nanorod-coated silver nanoparticles by the traditional Tollens reaction

An effective and robust colorimetric sensor array for simultaneous detection and discrimination of five reducing sugars (i.e., glyceraldehyde (Gly), fructose (Fru), glucose (Glu), maltose (Mal), and ribose (Rib)) has been proposed. In the sensor array, two negatively charged polydielectrics (sodium polystyrenesulfonate (NaPSS) and sodium polymethacrylate (NaPMAA)), which served as the sensing elements, were individually absorbed on the surface of the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-coated gold nanorods (AuNR) with positive charges through electrostatic action, forming the designed sensor units (NaPSS-AuNR and NaPMAA-AuNR). In the presence of Tollens reagent (Ag(NH₃)₂OH), Ag⁺ was absorbed on the surface of negatively charged NaPSS-AuNR and NaPMAA-AuNRs. When confronted with differential reducing sugars, different reducing sugars exhibited differential levels of deoxidizing abilities toward Ag⁺, thus Ag⁺ was reduced to diverse amounts of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in situ to form core-shell AuNR@AgNP by the traditional Tollens reaction method, leading to distinct colorimetric response patterns (value of A_S/A_L (the ratio of absorbance at 360 nm to that at 760 nm in Ag⁺-NaPMAA-AuNR, and the ratio of absorbance at 360 nm to that at 740 nm in Ag⁺-NaPSS-AuNR)). These response patterns are characteristic for each reducing sugar, and can be quantitatively distinguished by linear discriminant analysis (LDA) at concentrations as low as 10 nM with relative standard deviation (RSD) of 4.11% (n = 3). The practicability of this sensor array has been validated by recognition of reducing sugars in serum and urine samples. Application of NaYF4:Yb/Er/Tm UCNPs in Array-Based Sensing of Neurotransmitters: From a Single Particle to a Multichannel Sensor Array

A novel multichannel sensor array has been designed using a single, yet multiemissive lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP). The energy levels of lanthanide ions gave rise to several emission bands which were exploited as individual sensor elements for the recognition of four important neurotransmitters (NTs): dopamine, norepinephrine, levodopa, and serotonin. At alkaline conditions, the oxidation products of these NTs quenched the fluorescence emissions of UCNPs with different quenching degrees. The resulting fingerprint multichannel emission profiles from NaYF₄:Yb/Er/Tm UCNPs allowed the discrimination of NTs with excellent accuracy. The recognition was further verified in artificial cerebrospinal fluid, as a complex biological media. We believe that the designed UCNP-based multichannel sensor array offers innovative insights into the discrimination of various chemical signatures using a single measurement.

Plasmonic thermochromism based on a reversible redox reaction of Ag+/Ag on Au nanorods

Reversible redox reaction-based thermochromism using plasmonic nanocrystals is challenging due to the requirements set based on the complexity of the reaction system where the oxidizing and reducing agents must not interfere with each other, and both should possess temperature sensitivity. Herein, we demonstrate plasmonic thermochromism based on a reversible redox reaction of Ag+/Ag on Au nanorods (AuNRs) by incorporating temperature-sensitive reducing and oxidizing agents into the same system. The competition between reduction and oxidation is solely dependent on temperature. When the temperature is above (below) the transition temperature, the reduction of Ag+ (oxidation of Ag) dominates on the surface of AuNRs, and the thermochromic nanostructure solution appears green (red). An experimental study on the mechanism reveals that HOCl produced at low concentrations by H2O2 is the source of the observed temperature dependence of the Ag oxidation. Rationally tuning the transition temperature in a range from 27 to 40 °C can be realized by changing the concentration of some key chemical compounds in the solution. The thermochromic solution can be standalone-functional within multiple cycles of heating and cooling and long-term storage without any additional reagents. Our study provides new insight into plasmonic thermochromism and may pave the way for fabricating smart thermochromic materials.

Prussian blue-doped nanosized polyaniline for electrochemical detection of benzenediol isomers

Simultaneous speciation of benzenediol isomers (BDIs), 1,2-benzenediol (catechol, CC), 1,3-benzenediol (resorcinol, RS), and 1,4-benzenediol (hydroquinone, HQ), was investigated by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) using a graphite paste electrode (GPE) modified with Prussian blue-polyaniline nanocomposite. The modified GPE showed good stability, sensitivity, and selectivity properties for all the three BDIs. Prussian blue-doped nanosized polyaniline (PBNS-PANI) was synthesized first by using mechanochemical reactions between aniline and ferric chloride hexahydrate as the oxidants and then followed by the addition of potassium hexacyanoferrate(II) in a solid-state and template-free technique. The material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The DPV measurements are performed in phosphate electrolyte solution with pH 4.0 at a potential range of - 0.1 to 1.0 V. The proposed modified electrode displayed a strong, stable, and continuous three well-separated oxidation peaks towards electrooxidation at potentials 0.20, 0.31, and 0.76 V for HQ, CC, and RS, respectively. The calibration curves were linear from 1 to 350.5 μM for both HQ and CC, while for RS, it was from 2 to 350.5 μM. The limit of detection was determined to be 0.18, 0.01, and 0.02 μM for HQ, CC, and RS, respectively. The analytical performance of the PBNS-PANI/GPE has been evaluated for simultaneous determination of HQ, CC, and RS in creek water, commercial hair dye, and skin whitening cream samples with satisfactory recoveries between 90 and 106%. Overall, we demonstrated that the presence of NS-PANI and PB resulted in a large redox-active surface area that enabled a promising analytical platform for simultaneous detection of BDIs. Identification of Catecholamine Neurotransmitters Using a Fluorescent Electronic Tongue

Catecholamine neurotransmitters, specifically, dopamine (DA), epinephrine (EP), and norepinephrine (NE), are known as substantial indicators of various neurological diseases. Developing rapid detection methods capable of simultaneously screening their concentrations is highly desired for early clinical diagnosis of such diseases. To this aim, we have designed an optical sensor array using three fluorescent dyes with distinct emission bands and have monitored variations in their emission profiles upon the addition of DA, EP, and NE in the presence of gold ions. Because of the different reducing power of catecholamines, differently sized gold nanoparticles (GNPs) with different levels of aggregation were generated, resulting in different amounts of spectral overlap between the absorption band of the in situ generated plasmonic GNPs and the emission bands of the fluorescent dyes. These energy-transfer-based fingerprint profiles were used to discriminate the neurotransmitters by applying pattern recognition methods including linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and artificial neural networks (ANN) and to determine their concentration using multiple linear regression (MLR). Our proposed array also showed a good performance in the discrimination of DA, EP, and NE in complex biological media such as human urine.

A colorimetric sensor array for detection and discrimination of antioxidants based on Ag nanoshell deposition on gold nanoparticle surfaces

There is growing interest in developing a high-performance sensor array for detection and discrimination of antioxidants owing to their widespread use and essential role in the human body. The present work unveils a novel colorimetric sensor array for colorimetric discrimination of antioxidants based on the red, green, and blue alteration (ΔRGB) pattern recognition. In this sensor array, three concentrations of AgNO3 were used as sensing elements, and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were employed as a colorimetric probe. In the presence of antioxidants, the sensor array produces unique colorimetric response patterns for the discrimination of these antioxidants due to different reactivities between three different concentrations of AgNO3 and each antioxidant, leading to deposition of different quantities of Ag nanoshells on the surface of AuNPs, enabling an excellent discrimination of six antioxidants (catechin, epigallocatechin 3-gallate, epicatechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin 3-gallate, and gallocatechin) at a 20 nM level, when linear discriminant analysis (LDA), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), centroid diagram, spidergram, and color contour profiles were smartly combined. Furthermore, different concentrations of antioxidants and binary antioxidant mixtures, even ternary mixtures, could also be discriminated with this sensor array. Finally, the sensor array was successfully used for the discrimination of antioxidants in serum samples, demonstrating its potential applications in the diagnosis of antioxidant-related diseases.
