Abstract
This work is focused on the thermophysical and tribological study of eight nanolubricant compositions based on a polyalphaolefin (PAO 20) and two different nanoadditives: multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). Regarding the thermophysical properties, density and dynamic viscosity of the base oil and the nanolubricants were measured in the range of 278.15-373.15 K, as well as their viscosity index, with the aim of evaluating the variation of these properties with the addition of the nanoadditives. On the other hand, their lubricant properties, such as contact angle, coefficient of friction, and wear surface, were determined to analyze the influence of the nanoadditives on the tribological performance of the base oil. The results showed that MWCNTs and h-BN nanoadditives improved the wear area by 29% and 37%, respectively, at a 0.05 wt% concentration. The density and dynamic viscosity increased compared with the base oil as the nanoadditive concentration increased. The addition of MWCNTs and h-BN nanoparticles enhanced the tribological properties of PAO 20 base oil.

Abstract
This article presents, for the first time, a comparative analysis of the emission characteristics of large-area field-effect cathodes (LAFE) based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of various morphologies according to key parameters using a unique computerized technique. The work presents a description of a technology for creating various CNT arrays and their comprehensive structure characterization. All CNT arrays synthesized by the catalytic PECVD method on a silicon substrate showed a high degree of chemical purity under the presented technological conditions. In some cases, nanoisland films of Fe were used as a catalyst; in others, thin films of NiO were used, which were deposited on a silicon wafer by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and atomic layer deposition (ALD), respectively. As a result of these studies, it turned out that an array with a thick CNT coating has good resistance to the action of strong electric fields, fairly good uniformity of distribution of emission centers, a fairly high selection current (2.88 mA/cm2 at 4.53 V/μm), and compliance with the normal current mode according to the "orthodox" test, which makes the morphology of such structures the most promising for further technological optimization of CNT-based cathodes for various practical applications.

Abstract
Modifying the surface of nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes, by introducing heteroatoms or larger functional groups into the structure causes a change in chemical properties-manifested in the increase in reactivity as well as a change in conductivity. This paper presents the new selenium derivatives obtained by a covalent functionalization of brominated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The synthesis was carried out in mild conditions (3 days at room temperature), and was additionally assisted with ultrasound. After a two-stage purification, the obtained products were identified and characterized by the following methods: scanning and transmission electron microscopy imaging (SEM and TEM), energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In the selenium derivatives of carbon nanotubes, the content of selenium and phosphorus reached 14 and 4.2 wt%, respectively.

Abstract
The bromination of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) was performed with vapor bromine in a closed vessel, and they were subjected to intensive stirring with a magnetic stirrer for up to 14 days. The efficiency of bromination was compared depending upon duration. The structure and surface of the crude and purified products were characterized by detailed physicochemical analyses, such as SEM/EDS, TEM, XRD, TGA, Raman, and XPS spectroscopies. The studies confirmed the presence of bromine covalently bound with nanotubes as well as the formation of inclusion MWCNT–Br2 complexes. It was confirmed that Br2 molecules are absorbed on the surface of nanotubes (forming the CNT-Br2 complex), while they can dissociate close to dangling bonds at CNT defect sites with the formation of covalent C−Br bonds. Thus, any covalent attachment of bromine to the graphitic surface achieved around room temperature is likely related to the defects in the MWCNTs. The best results, i.e., the highest amount of attached Br2, were obtained for brominated nanotubes brominated for 10 days, with the content of covalently bound bromine being 0.68 at% (by XPS).

Abstract
We report the formation of nanoscale particles from the complexation reaction between zinc acetate and ascorbic acid under ambient conditions and in an aqueous medium. The reaction led to the formation of a molecular complex with the formula Zn x (AA) y (OAc) z (x, y, and z = possible smallest positive integer) with AA meaning ascorbate, based on the mass spectrometry results. Following this, the formation of luminescent nanoscale particles - the size of which increased with time - was observed. During 24 h of observation, the sizes increased to about 50 nm in the presence of different sizes at all times. Transmission electron microscopy results also indicated the formation of polycrystalline as well as amorphous nanoparticles in the medium. Further, the appearance of a UV absorption peak at 380 nm and photoluminescence peak at 473 nm marked the formation of the nanoparticles. The luminescence was also observed to be wavelength tuneable. FTIR and NMR spectroscopy results also supported the formation of a molecular complex with the above formula. The present work highlights the importance of emergent properties of nanoscale molecular materials for crystallization. Also, the present discovery is expected to contribute to the development of safe nanomaterials.

Abstract
Nanotube membranes could show significantly enhanced permeance and selectivity for gas separations. Up until now, studies have primarily focused on applying carbon nanotubes to membranes to achieve ultrafast mass transport. Here, we report the first preparation of silicon nanotube (SiNT) membranes via a template-assisted method and investigate the gas transport behavior through these SiNT membranes using single- and mixed-gas permeation experiments. The SiNT membranes consist of conical cylinder-shaped nanotubes vertically aligned on a porous silicon wafer substrate. The diameter of the SiNT pore mouths are 10 and 30 nm, and the average inner diameter of the tube body is 80 nm. Interestingly, among the gases tested, we found an unprecedentedly low CO2 permeance through the SiNT membranes in single-gas permeation experiments, exceeding the theoretical Knudsen selectivity toward small gases/CO2 separation. This behavior was caused by the reduction of CO2 permeability through the blocking effect of CO2 adsorbed in the narrow pore channels of the SiNT cone regions, indicating that CO2 molecules have a high affinity to the native silicon oxide layer (∼2 nm) that is formed on the inner walls of SiNTs. SiNT membranes also exhibited enhanced gas permeance and water flux as compared to classic theoretical models and, as such, may prove useful as a new type of nanotube material for use in membrane applications.

Abstract
Curcumin (Cur) has medicinal properties, undergoes hydrolysis, and has low water solubility that limits its bioavailability and industrial usage. Different host molecules such as carbon nanotubes (CNT) can be useful in improving solubility and stabilizing Cur, therefore understanding the interaction of Cur with host molecules such as CNT is crucial. In this study, UV-visible light absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques have been applied to reveal the interaction of Cur with CNT. Visible light absorption of Cur increases with CNT concentration, whereas fluorescence intensity of Cur is quenched in the presence of CNT. The obtained results confirm that fluorescence reduction is due to both static and dynamic quenching and is a result of the ground state and excited-state complex formation. The pH environment influences the quenching rate due to deprotonation of Cur at higher pH; excess OH- ion concentration in the solution further discourages electrostatic interaction between the deprotonated form of Cur with CNT. It is found that at lower temperatures (<35°C) dynamic quenching is much more dominant and at higher temperatures (45°C) static quenching is more dominant. The interaction is further supported using X-ray diffraction patterns and Fourier transform infrared spectra in the solid state, and suggests encapsulation of curcumin within the CNT. It is further evident that fluorescence quenching of Cur using CNT is further enhanced in the presence of several salts, as increase in ionic strength of the solution pushes the hydrophobic Cur molecule towards the CNT core by increasing the proximity between them.

Abstract
Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes' (SWCNTs) broad absorption range and all-carbon composition make them attractive materials for light harvesting. We report photoinduced charge transfer from both multichiral and single-chirality SWCNT films into atomically flat SnO2 and TiO2 crystals. Higher-energy second excitonic SWCNT transitions produce more photocurrent, demonstrating carrier injection rates are competitive with fast hot-exciton relaxation processes. A logarithmic relationship exists between photoinduced electron-transfer driving force and photocarrier collection efficiency, becoming more efficient with smaller diameter SWCNTs. Photocurrents are generated from both conventional sensitization and in the opposite direction with the semiconductor under accumulation and acting as an ohmic contact with only the p-type nanotubes. Finally, we demonstrate that SWCNT surfactant choice and concentration play a large role in photon conversion efficiency and present methods of maximizing photocurrent yields.

Abstract
A new imaging technology has emerged that uses carbon nanotubes (CNT) as the electron emitter (cathode) for the X-ray tube. Since the performance of the CNT cathode is controlled by simple voltage manipulation, CNT-enabled X-ray sources are ideal for the repetitive imaging steps needed to capture three-dimensional information. As such, they have allowed the development of a gated micro-computed tomography (CT) scanner for small animal research as well as stationary tomosynthesis, an experimental technology for large field-of-view human imaging. The small animal CT can acquire images at specific points in the respiratory and cardiac cycles. Longitudinal imaging therefore becomes possible and has been applied to many research questions, ranging from tumor response to the noninvasive assessment of cardiac output. Digital tomosynthesis (DT) is a low-dose and low-cost human imaging tool that captures some depth information. Known as three-dimensional mammography, DT is now used clinically for breast imaging. However, the resolution of currently-approved DT is limited by the need to swing the X-ray source through space to collect a series of projection views. An array of fixed and distributed CNT-enabled sources provides the solution and has been used to construct stationary DT devices for breast, lung, and dental imaging. To date, over 100 patients have been imaged on Institutional Review Board-approved study protocols. Early experience is promising, showing an excellent conspicuity of soft-tissue features, while also highlighting technical and post-acquisition processing limitations that are guiding continued research and development. Additionally, CNT-enabled sources are being tested in miniature X-ray tubes that are capable of generating adequate photon energies and tube currents for clinical imaging. Although there are many potential applications for these small field-of-view devices, initial experience has been with an X-ray source that can be inserted into the mouth for dental imaging. Conceived less than 20 years ago, CNT-enabled X-ray sources are now being manufactured on a commercial scale and are powering both research tools and experimental human imaging devices. Abstract
1/1 dispersions of ss-DNA/CNT complexes in mass ratios were investigated in a mixture with didodecyldimethylammonium bromide, DDAB. Depending on the amounts of the surface-active agent and of the complexes, solutions, precipitates, or re-dissolution occur. DDAB titrates the phosphate groups on the outer surface of the complex and controls the phase sequence in these systems. The combination of different experimental methods determined the phases that occur therein. The results are based on optical absorbance, Dynamic Light Scattering, ionic conductivity, ζ-potential, optical microscopy and AFM. From the above findings a (pseudo)-binary phase diagram is attained. The system has strong similarities with polymer-surfactant mixtures. In fact, its properties conform to cases in which interactions between rigid rod-like polyelectrolytes and oppositely charged species take place. The peculiarities of double-chained DDAB in the process imply significant differences with respect to the behavior of single chain surfactants. In fact, DDAB associates into vesicular entities, when the homologous single chain species forms small micellar aggregates.

Abstract
Two multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-based nanohybrids, MWCNT-ZnTPP and MWCNT-TPP (TPP=5-[4-{2-(4-formylphenoxy)- ethyloxy}phenyl]-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin, ZnTPP=5-[4-{(4-formylphenyl)ethynyl}phenyl]-10,15,20-triphenylporphinatozinc(II)), were prepared directly from pristine MWCNTs through 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions. Covalent attachment of the porphyrins to the surfaces of the MWCNTs was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet/visible absorption, fluorescence, Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elemental analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Attachment of the porphyrin moieties to the surface of the MWCNTs significantly improves the solubility and ease of processing of these MWCNT-porphyrin composite materials. Z-scan studies reveal that these MWCNT-porphyrin nanohybrids exhibit enhanced nonlinear optical properties under both nanosecond and picosecond laser pulses at λ=532 nm in comparison with free MWCNTs and the free porphyrin chromophores, whereas superior optical limiting performance was displayed by MWCNT-porphyrin composite materials rather than MWCNTs/ZnTPP and MWCNTs/TPP blends, which is consistent with a remarkable accumulation effect as a result of the covalent linkage between the porphyrin and the MWCNTs.

Abstract
Block copolymers can yield a diverse array of nanostructures. Their assembly structures are influenced by their inherent structures, and the wide variety of structures that can be prepared especially becomes apparent when one considers the number of routes available to prepare block copolymer assemblies. Some examples include self-assembly, directed assembly, coupling, as well as hierarchical assembly, which can yield assemblies having even higher structural order. These assembly routes can also be complemented by processing techniques such as selective crosslinking and etching, the former technique leading to permanent structures, the latter towards sculpted and the combination of the two towards permanent sculpted structures. The combination of these pathways provides extremely versatile routes towards an exciting variety of architectures. This review will attempt to highlight destinations reached by LIU Guojun and coworkers following these pathways.

Abstract
Fabrication of uniform thin coatings of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) on semiconductor (silicon) substrates with 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES) surface functionalization has been studied extensively in this report. The gradual deposition and eventual film formation of the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is greatly assisted by the Coulombic force of attraction existing between the positively charged –NH2 surface groups of APTES and the acid treated, negatively charged nanotubes migrating towards the deposition surfaces. The remarkable deposition characteristics of the CNT coatings by EPD in comparison to the dip coating method and the influence of isopropyl (IPA)-based CNT suspension in the fabricated film quality has also been revealed in this study. The effect of varying APTES concentration (5%–100%) on the Raman spectroscopy and thickness of the deposited CNT film has been discussed in details, as well. The deposition approach has eliminated the need of metal deposition in the electrophoretic deposition approach and, therefore, establishes a cost-effective, fast and entirely room temperature-based fabrication strategy of CNT thin films for a wide range of next generation electronic applications.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) study is performed to investigate the influence of carbon substituting in a representative model of armchair boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs). To this aim, the electric field gradient (EFG) tensors at the sites of11B and11N nuclei are calculated in two models of (4,4) single-walled BNNT. Model one (raw) consists of 36 B and 36 N atoms with 12 saturating H atoms of two mouths while 7 B and 7 N atoms are substituted by 14 C atoms like a wire in model two ( C -substituted). The converted EFG tensors to measurable nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) parameters, quadrupole coupling constant (CQ) and asymmetry parameter (ηQ), reveal that the CQvalues in the length of raw BNNT are divided into some layers with equal magnitude and among them the mouth layers have the largest CQmagnitudes. In the C -substituted model, in addition to the mouth layers, the CQof those B and N nuclei directly bonded to C atoms are increased to the magnitudes as large as those mouth nuclei meaning that the active sites are increased in the C -substituted BNNT model. It is worth noting that the NQR parameters of other nuclei rather than those directly bonded to C and also those in the first neighborhood of C atoms are almost in equal values in the two models. Comparing the results with a recent study on zigzag BNNT (Mirzaei M et al., Z. Naturforsch A62:56, 2007) reveals that armchair and zigzag BNNTs show almost similar electronic properties. However, there is a significant difference in the electronic properties of those B and N atoms located at the mouth of the two BNNTs whose mouths are similar in armchair, whereas there are two different mouths ( B -mouth and N -mouth) in zigzag BNNT.

Abstract
Durability and narrow pore size distribution (PSD) of carbons fabricated from Salix viminalis wood
Microporous carbon molecular sieves of extremely narrow pore size distribution were obtained by carbonization of a novel raw material (Salix viminalis). The precursor is inexpensive and widely accessible. The pore capacity and specific surface area are upgradable by H3PO4 treatment without significant change of narrowed PSD. The dominating pore size indicates that these molecular sieves are a potential competitor to other nanoporous materials such as opened and purified carbon nanotubes.

Abstract
We report a method for synthesizing quasi-single crystalline porous ZnO nanostructures containing a single large cavity. The microwave-assisted route consists of a short (about 2 min) temperature ramping stage (from room temperature to 120 °C) and a stage in which the temperature is maintained at 120 °C for 2 h. The structures produced by this route were 200-480 nm in diameter. The morphological yields of this method were very high. The temperature- and time-dependent evolution of the synthesized powders and the effects of an additive, vitamin C, were studied. Spherical amorphous/polycrystalline structures (70-170 nm in diameter), which appeared transitorily, may play a key role in the formation of the single crystalline porous hollow ZnO nanostructures. Studies and characterization of the nanostructures suggested a possible mechanism for formation of the quasi-single crystalline porous ZnO nanostructures with an interior space.

Abstract
Carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNFETs) show great promise as building blocks of future integrated circuits. However, synthesizing single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with accurate chirality and exact positioning control has been widely acknowledged as an exceedingly complex task. Indeed, density and chirality variations in CNT growth can compromise the reliability of CNFET-based circuits. In this paper, we present a novel statistical compact model to estimate the failure probability of CNFETs to provide some material and process guidelines for the design of CNFETs in gigascale integrated circuits. We use measured CNT spacing distributions within the framework of detailed failure analysis to demonstrate that both the CNT density and the ratio of metallic to semiconducting CNTs play dominant roles in defining the failure probability of CNFETs. Besides, it is argued that the large-scale integration of these devices within an integrated circuit will be feasible only if a specific range of CNT density with an acceptable ratio of semiconducting to metallic CNTs can be adjusted in a typical synthesis process.

Abstract
One-dimensional carbon nanotube (CNT) junctions with interesting device characteristics have been designed by encapsulating p- and n-type organic molecules into CNTs with electrophilic tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQ) and nucleophilic tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene (TDAE) molecules in order to explore the effect of encapsulation of organic molecules and rectifying behaviors of the designed one-dimensional CNT p-n junctions. Our results show that p- and n-type doping of CNTs and their associated charge transfer play an important role in determining the electron transport characteristics and lead to materials with unique properties, p-n junction diode, i.e. Zener-like diode. Furthermore, we show that the operational device characteristics of non-covalently doped CNT junctions originate from the distinct response of intrinsic transmission peaks of pure CNTs according to the type of dopant and the applied bias. We believe that the results give an insight into the design and implementation of various electronic logic functions based on CNTs for applications in the field of nanoelectronics.

Abstract
We present a systematic analysis of electron transport characteristics for one-dimensional heterojunctions with two multi-nitrogen-doped (multi-N-doped) capped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) facing one another at different numbers of nitrogen atoms and conformations. Our results show that the modification of the molecular orbitals by the nitrogen dopants generates conducting channels in the designed heterojunctions inducing multi-switching behavior with sequential negative differential resistance (NDR). The NDR behavior significantly depends on the doping site and conformation of doped nitrogen atoms. Furthermore, we provide a clear interpretation for the NDR behavior by a rigid shift model of the HOMO- and LUMO-filtered energy levels in the left and right electrodes under the applied biases. We believe that our results will give an insight into the design and implementation of various electronic logic functions based on CNTs for applications in the field of nanoelectronics.
