Coumarin-Based Chemosensors for Zinc(II): Toward the Determination of the Design Algorithm for CHEF-Type and Ratiometric Probes

A pyrene-induced PET-based chemosensor for biologically important Zn(II) ions: application in test strips and live cell imaging studies

Cation and anion sensing is vital owing to their universal dispersion in ecosystems and biological functions. It has been shown that fluorescent receptors based on organic platforms are efficient for detecting a number of ions and have many advantages such as low cost, superior sensitivity and simplicity in installation. This study demonstrates the design and synthesis of a novel receptor (E)-3-[(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino]-2-(pyren-1-yl)-2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one (DTQ) for the rapid recognition of Zn(II) ions. DTQ exhibited a significant fluorometric "turn-on" characteristic towards Zn(II) at λmax 444 nm in aqueous acetonitrile by inhibiting the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) and -CN- process. The ESI-MS analysis and Job's plot experimental results confirmed stoichiometric 1 : 1 complex formation between DTQ and Zn(II). Fluorometric investigations revealed the detection limit and association constant of DTQ towards Zn(II), which were found to be 13.4 nM and 1.47 × 105 M-1, respectively. DTQ was employed to sense Zn(II) on low-cost test strips. The present research findings imply that DTQ can function as an effective sensor for Zn(II).

Combined experimental and computational investigations of the fluorosolvatochromism of chromeno[4,3-b]pyridine derivatives: Effect of the methoxy substitution

Extensive research has been conducted on the spectral properties of chromeno[4,3-b]pyridine derivatives, owing to their potential applications in sensing, optoelectronic devices, and drug discovery. This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the fluorosolvatochromism of selected chromeno[4,3-b]pyridine derivatives, with a particular emphasis on the impact of methoxy substitution. Three derivatives were synthesized and subjected to spectral analysis: chromeno[4,3-b]pyridine-3-carboxylate (I) as the parent compound, and its 7-methoxy (II) and 8-methoxy (III) substituted derivatives.The UV-Vis absorption spectra of all derivatives exhibited a broad band with a maximum absorption wavelength that remained unaffected by the surrounding medium. However, distinct fluorescence properties were observed among them. Specifically, derivative II displayed notable fluorescence, while derivatives I and III exhibited no fluorescence properties. Furthermore, derivative II exhibited a fluorescence spectrum that is significantly influenced by the polarity of the medium. To investigate the fluorosolvatochromic behavior in depth, we conducted a comprehensive analysis using various neat solvents with different polarities and hydrogen bonding capabilities. The results obtained revealed a significant positive fluorosolvatochromism, with a bathochromic shift in the fluorescence spectrum as the solvent polarity increased. To understand how specific and non-specific interactions between the solute and the solvent affected the fluorosolvatochromism of II, we employed the four empirical scales model of Catalán. The obtained results demonstrated that intramolecular charge transfer played a crucial role in the fluorescence behavior of II. To provide a molecular-level explanation for the experimental spectral properties, we utilized the DFT and TD-DFT/B3LYP/6-31 + G(d) computational methods with the IEFPCM implicit solvation approach. The spectral differences between II and III were rationalized in terms of the frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs: the HOMO and LUMO), where distinct natures were observed among the examined derivatives. This study offers valuable insights into the impact of methoxy substitution on the physical and chemical properties of chromeno[4,3-b]pyridine derivatives, specifically concerning their spectral properties as elucidated by their fluorosolvatochromic behavior.

E- or Z-Isomers Arising from the Geometries of Ligands in the Mercury Complex of 2-(Anthracen-9-ylmethylene)-N-phenylhydrazine Carbothioamide

An anionic mercury(II) complex of 2-(anthracen-9-ylmethylene)-N-phenylhydrazine carbothioamide (HATU) and two isomers of a neutral mercury(II) complex of the anion of the same ligand (ATU) were reported. The anionic complex [Hg(HATU)2Cl2]·CH2Cl2 had a monodentate HATU ligand (a neutral form of the ligand) and chloride ligands. The two conformational isomers were of the neutral mercury(II) complex Hg(ATU)2·2DMF. The two isomers were from the E or Z geometry of the ligands across the conjugated C=N-N=C-N scaffold of the coordinated ligand. The two isomers of the complex were independently prepared and characterized. The spectroscopic properties of the isomers in solution were studied by 1H NMR as well as fluorescence spectroscopy. Facile conversion of the E-isomer to the Z-isomer in solution was observed. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the Z-isomer of the complex was stable compared to the E-isomer by an energy of 14.35 kJ/mol; whereas, E isomer of the ligand was more stable than Z isomer by 8.37 KJ/mol. The activation barrier for the conversion of the E-isomer to the Z-isomer of the ligand was 167.37 kJ/mol. The role of the mercury ion in the conversion of the E-form to the Z-form was discussed. The mercury complex [Hg(HATU)2Cl2]·CH2Cl2 had the E-form of the ligand. Distinct photophysical features of these mercury complexes were presented.

A coumarin-based multifunctional chemosensor for Cu2+/Al3+ as an AD theranostic agent: Synthesis, X-ray single crystal analysis and activity study

The pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is complex. So far there is no effective drug to treat the disease. The pathological changes of AD began 30 years before symptoms, so early diagnosis is considered to be important for AD treatment. Integrating diagnosis and therapy into a single regent has provided a new opportunity for AD treatment. Given that metal dyshomeostasis is thought to be one of the key factors to cause AD, a Schiff base substituted coumarin (probe 1) has been designed and synthesized as a selective metal chelator for multi-factor anti-AD in this work. The results of metal ions recognition showed that probe 1 had high selective fluorescent turn-on response to Al3+ and fluorescent turn-off response to Cu2+, due to intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanism. Meanwhile, the results of both in vitro and in vivo bioactivities evaluation including metal chelation, reactive oxide species (ROS) elimination, self-/Cu2+-induced Aβ aggregation showed that 1 and 1-Cu(II) complex had excellent synergistic anti-AD activities. In addition, 1 had low cytotoxicity and was predicted to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Noticeably, X-ray single crystal diffraction of 1-Cu(II) provided molecular level information to explain the structure and theranostic activity relationship. To sum up, 1 may be a promising candidate for the development of AD theranostic agent.

A Review on Metal Ion Sensors Derived from Chalcone Precursor

Disclosure of new molecular probes as chromogenic and fluorogenic cation sensors is scientifically exigent work. Recently chalcone derivatives gained more attention because of their structural variability. A suitable donor and acceptor groups separated by delocalized π-orbitals display excellent chromogenic and fluorogenic properties because of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT). These designed molecular frameworks provide the coordination sites to the incoming metal ions results in small changes in the optical properties. In a typical sensing behavior, coordination leads to a large conjugation plane with the probe resulted in hypo/hyperchromic shifts or red/blue shifts. In this review, we tried to converge the reported chalcone-derived sensors and explored the design, synthesis, metal ion sensing mechanism, and practical application of the probes. We expect that this review gives a basic outline for researchers to explore the field of chalcone-based sensors further.

A Highly Selective Turn-On Fluorescent Probe for the Detection of Zinc

A novel turn-on fluorescence probe L has been designed that exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity with a detection limit of 9.53 × 10⁻⁸ mol/L for the quantification of Zn²⁺. ¹H-NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the unsymmetrical nature of the structure of the Schiff base probe L. An emission titration experiment in the presence of different molar fractions of Zn²⁺ was used to perform a Job’s plot analysis. The results showed that the stoichiometric ratio of the complex formed by L and Zn²⁺ was 1:1. Moreover, the molecular structure of the mononuclear Cu complex reveals one ligand L coordinates with one Cu atom in the asymmetric unit. On adding CuCl₂ to the ZnCl₂/L system, a Cu-Zn complex was formed and a strong quenching behavior was observed, which inferred that the Cu²⁺ displaced Zn²⁺ to coordinate with the imine nitrogen atoms and hydroxyl oxygen atoms of probe L.

A New Benzothiazin-functionalized Calix[4]arene-based Fluorescent Chemosensor for the Selective Detection of Co2+ Ion

Calixarenes, which have a great place in supramolecular chemistry, have become the most prominent macrocyclic compounds in synthetic organic chemistry due to their easy synthesis and functionalization. In this study, p-tert-butyl calix[4]arene dihydrazide derivative was synthesized and then reacted with 3-oxo-3,4-dihydro-2 H-benzo[b][1,4] thiazin-2-ylideneacetyl chloride to prepare new calixarene based chromophore compound 4. The structure of the synthesized compound was elucidated by spectroscopic methods such as ¹H NMR ¹³C NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. Chromogenic and fluorescence properties of compound 4 were evaluated. It was observed from both studies that compound 4 was Co²⁺ selective and shows fluorescence Switched-off behavior. Stoichiometry, binding constant and the detection limit were calculated. The stoichiometry between compound 4 and Co²⁺ was found to be 1:1. The binding constant value (K) was calculated as 666.67 M^- 1 using Benesi-Hildebrand equation, while the detection limit for Co²⁺ ion was calculated as 0.0465 µM.

An endoplasmic reticulum-targeting fluorescent probe for discriminatory detection of Cys, Hcy and GSH in living cells

Endoplasmic reticulum, known to us as the ER, is the largest organelle in many kinds of eukaryotic cells and plays vital roles in maintaining the normal function of cells. Biothiols (Cys, Hcy, GSH) in secretory proteins will be modified as they enter the ER and are of great importance in balancing redox state of ER environments. In this article, we have developed the first endoplasmic reticulum-targeting fluorescent probe, ER-CP, for concurrent distinguishment of Cys, Hcy and GSH with favorable sensitivity and selectivity. ER-CP was successfully used in fluorescence imaging of Cys, Hcy and GSH in HeLa cells. In addition, ER-CP exhibited a good ER-targeting property (Pearson's correlation coefficient = 0.90).

Cobalt (II) complex as a fluorescent sensing platform for the selective and sensitive detection of triketone HPPD inhibitors

4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvatedioxygenase (HPPD) is a Fe(II)/Co(II)-dependent enzyme which has become one of the most effective herbicide targets. HPPD inhibitors have been developed as efficient herbicides for resistant weed control. Developing a method for efficient and rapid HPPD inhibitors detection is still challenging. N-n-butyl-4-methylhydrazinecarbothioamide-1,8-naphthalimide (NMN) was synthesized and used to detect Co²⁺ efficiently with the limit of detection (LOD) of 7.82 nM with a turn-on fluorescence. Herein a novel fluorescent complex, NMN‒Co²⁺ was employed to determine HPPD inhibitors which performed a turn-off effect in the sensing process based on the competitive coordination between the probe and HPPD with Co²⁺. The LODs for three commercial triketone HPPD inhibitors (mesotrione, tembotrione and NTBC) were 6.60 nM, 7.37 nM and 10.22 nM with good sensitivity and selectivity. Furthermore, the present probe has potentials to quantitatively detect mesotrione and tembotrione in real samples.

A highly selective pyridoxal-based chemosensor for the detection of Zn(ii) and application in live-cell imaging; X-ray crystallography of pyridoxal-TRIS Schiff-base Zn(ii) and Cu(ii) complexes

In a simple, one-step reaction, we have synthesized a pyridoxal-based chemosensor by reacting tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (TRIS) together with pyridoxal hydrochloride to yield a Schiff-base ligand that is highly selective for the detection of Zn(ii) ion. Both the ligand and the Zn(ii) complex have been characterized by ¹H & ¹³C NMR, ESI-MS, CHN analyses, and X-ray crystallography. The optical properties of the synthesized ligand were investigated in an aqueous buffer solution and found to be highly selective and sensitive toward Zn(ii) ion through a fluorescence turn-on response. The competition studies reveal the response for zinc ion is unaffected by all alkali and alkaline earth metals; and suppressed by Cu(ii) ion. The ligand itself shows a weak fluorescence intensity (quantum yield, Φ = 0.04), and the addition of zinc ion enhanced the fluorescence intensity 12-fold (quantum yield, Φ = 0.48). The detection limit for zinc ion was 2.77 × 10⁻⁸ M, which is significantly lower than the WHO's guideline (76.5 μM). Addition of EDTA to a solution containing the ligand–Zn(ii) complex quenched the fluorescence, indicating the reversibility of Zn(ii) binding. Stoichiometric studies indicated the formation of a 2 : 1 L₂Zn complex with a binding constant of 1.2 × 10⁹ M⁻² (±25%). The crystal structure of the zinc complex shows the same hydrated L₂Zn complex, with Zn(ii) ion binding with an octahedral coordination geometry. We also synthesized the copper(ii) complex of the ligand, and the crystal structure showed the formation of a 1 : 1 adduct, revealing 1-dimensional polymeric networks with octahedral coordinated Cu(ii). The ligand was employed as a sensor to detect zinc ion in HEK293 cell lines derived from human embryonic kidney cells grown in tissue culture which showed strong luminescence in the presence of Zn(ii). We believe that the outstanding turn-on response, sensitivity, selectivity, lower detection limit, and reversibility toward zinc ion will find further application in chemical and biological science.

The synthesis, characterization, X-ray crystallography, and live-cell imaging of pyridoxal-TRIS Schiff-base ligand which is selective as a luminescence sensor to detect Zn(ii) ion, and the corresponding Zn(ii) and Cu(ii) complexes are described.

Thermally Stable Fluorogenic Zn(II) Sensor Based on a Bis(benzimidazole)pyridine-Linked Phenyl-Silsesquioxane Polymer

A 2,6-bis(2-benzimidazolyl) pyridine-linked silsesquioxane-based semi-branched polymer was synthesized, and its photophysical and metal-sensing properties have been investigated. The polymer is thermally stable up to 285 °C and emits blue in both solid and solution state. The emission of the polymer is sensitive to pH and is gradually decreased and quenched upon protonation of the linkers. The initial emission color is recoverable upon deprotonation with triethylamine. The polymer also shows unique spectroscopic properties in both absorption and emission upon long-term UV irradiation, with red-shifted absorption and emission not present in a simple blended system of phenylsilsesquioxane and linker, suggesting that a long-lived energy transfer or charge separated state is present. In addition, the polymer acts as a fluorescence shift sensor for Zn(II) ions, with red shifts observed from 464 to 528 nm, and reversible binding by the introduction of a competitive ligand such as tetrahydrofuran. The ion sensing mechanism can differentiate Zn(II) from Cd(II) by fluorescence color shifts, which is unique because they are in the same group of the periodic table and possess similar chemical properties. Finally, the polymer system embedded in a paper strip acts as a fluorescent chemosensor for Zn(II) ions in solution, showing its potential as a solid phase ion extractor.

Unusual absence of FRET in triazole bridged coumarin-hydroxyquinoline, an active sensor for Hg2+ detection

A triazole-bridged coumarin conjugated quinoline sensor has been 'click'-synthesized by Cu(i) catalyzed Huisgen cycloaddition, and it exhibited high selectivity for toxic Hg2+. Surprisingly, no evidence of energy transfer from the quinoline moiety to coumarin has been found, substantiated by time-resolved fluorescence study. The possible binding mode of this sensor to Hg2+ has been established via NMR study, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, which is further supported by TDDFT calculations. The sensor has been found to be cell membrane permeable and non-toxic, and hence is suitable for intracellular Hg2+ detection.

Systematic approach of chromone skeleton for detecting Mg2+, ion: Applications for sustainable cytotoxicity and cell imaging possibilities

The systematic studies of chromone appended novel chemosensors, favored to Mg²⁺ ion detection, these were analyzed and characterized by different spectroscopic techniques such as NMR, mass spectroscopy, FTIR and optical techniques. The binding demeanor of the ligands was executed with the library of metal ions and shown the good coordination with Mg²⁺ ion to the ligand's cavity. Both ligands demonstrated good binding behavior with Mg²⁺ ion. The ligands represented 1: 1 stoichiometry with Mg²⁺ ions through Job's plot. The low limit of detection of Mg²⁺ ion was determined as 2.56 × 10^-6 and 1.28 × 10^-6 for L_a and L_b respectively. No interference was occurred in Inference study by foreign metal ions that supported the specific detection of Mg²⁺ ion among the other metal ions. Further, the cytotoxicity assay test of these chromone appended ligands revealed that both ligands and their respective compound with Mg²⁺ ion shown negligible toxicity with HeLa cancer cell line. Further, due to the fluorescence properties of the ligands, with or without Mg²⁺ ion was successfully tested in bioimaging experiment of HeLa cancer cell lines and found that ligands with Mg²⁺ ions represented good imaging with HeLa cancer cell.

Furo[3,2-c]coumarin-derived Fe3+ Selective Fluorescence Sensor: Synthesis, Fluorescence Study and Application to Water Analysis

Furocoumarin (furo[3,2-c]coumarin) derivatives have been synthesized from single step, high yielding (82-92%) chemistry involving a 4-hydroxycoumarin 4 + 1 cycloaddition reaction. They are characterized by FTIR, 1H-NMR, and, for the first time, a comprehensive UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy study has been carried out to determine if these compounds can serve as useful sensors. Based on the fluorescence data, the most promising furocoumarin derivative (2-(cyclohexylamino)-3-phenyl-4H-furo[3,2-c]chromen-4-one, FH), exhibits strong fluorescence (ФF = 0.48) with long fluorescence lifetime (5.6 ns) and large Stokes' shift, suggesting FH could be used as a novel fluorescent chemosensor. FH exhibits a highly selective, sensitive and instant turn-off fluorescence response to Fe3+ over other metal ions which was attributed to a charge transfer mechanism. Selectivity was demonstrated against 13 other competing metal ions (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Al3+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Pb2+ and Ru3+) and aqueous compatibility was demonstrated in 10% MeOH-H2O solution. The FH sensor coordinates Fe3+ in a 1:2 stoichiometry with a binding constant, Ka = 5.25 × 103 M-1. This novel sensor has a limit of detection of 1.93 µM, below that of the US environmental protection agency guidelines (5.37 µM), with a linear dynamic range of ~28 (~2-30 µM) and an R2 value of 0.9975. As an exemplar application we demonstrate the potential of this sensor for the rapid measurement of Fe3+ in mineral and tap water samples demonstrating the real-world application of FH as a "turn off" fluorescence sensor.

A New Fluorescent Chemosensor for Cobalt(II) Ions in Living Cells Based on 1,8-Naphthalimide

In this work, a highly selective fluorescent chemosensor N-(2-(2-butyl-1,3-dioxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[de]isoquinolin-6-yl)hydrazine-1-carbonothioyl)benzamide (L) was prepared and characterized. An assay to detect the presence of cobalt(II) ions was developed by utilizing turn-on fluorescence enhancement with visual colorimetric response. Upon treatment with Co²⁺, a remarkable fluorescence enhancement located at 450 nm was visible to naked eyes accompanied with a distinct color change (from pink to colorless) in a CH₃CN/HEPES (4/1, v/v, pH = 7.4) solution due to the formation of a 1:1 complex at room temperature. In addition, the linear concentration range for Co²⁺ was 0–25 µM with the limit of detection down to 0.26 µM. Thus, a highly sensitive fluorescent method based on chelation-assisted fluorescence enhancement was developed for the trace-level detection of Co²⁺. The sensor was found to be highly selective toward Co²⁺ ions with a large number of coexisting ions. Furthermore, the L probe can serve as a fluorescent sensor for Co²⁺ detecting in biological environments, demonstrating its low toxic properties to organisms and good cell permeability in live cell imaging.

A highly turn-on fluorescent CHEF-type chemosensor for selective detection of Cu2+ in aqueous media

An efficient "turn on" fluorescence chemosensor Schiff base LH based on the combination of 2-Hydroxy-5-(p-tolyldiazenyl)benzaldehyde and N-(3-Aminopropyl)imidazole was prepared and characterized then evaluated for its selective fluorescent sensing of Cu²⁺ amongst other metal ions. The CN isomerization inhibition process induced by the Cu²⁺ binding warrants the chelation-induced enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) effect. In addition, the detection limit sensing of LH for Cu²⁺ was found to be 1.8 × 10^-6 M that is below the WHO recommendation level (20 μM) for drinking water.

Low Molecular Weight Fluorescent Probes (LMFPs) to Detect the Group 12 Metal Triad

Fluorescence sensing, of d-block elements such as Cu2+, Fe3+, Fe2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Zn2+ has significantly increased since the beginning of the 21st century. These particular metal ions play essential roles in biological, industrial, and environmental applications, therefore, there has been a drive to measure, detect, and remediate these metal ions. We have chosen to highlight the low molecular weight fluorescent probes (LMFPs) that undergo an optical response upon coordination with the group 12 triad (Zn2+, Cd2+, and Hg2+), as these metals have similar chemical characteristics but behave differently in the environment.

A unique benzimidazole-naphthalene hybrid molecule for independent detection of Zn2+ and N3- ions: Experimental and theoretical investigations

Single crystal X-ray structurally characterized benzimidazole-naphthalene hybrid (NABI) functions as a unique dual analyte sensor that can detect Zn²⁺ cation and N₃^- anion independently. The NABI forms chelate with Zn²⁺ to inhibit internal charge transfer (ICT) and CHN isomerisation resulting chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF). On the other hand, the sensing of N₃^- is based on formation of supramolecular H-bonded rigid assembly. The association constant of NABI for Zn²⁺ and N₃^- ions are 19 × 10⁴ M^-1 and 11 × 10² M^-1, respectively. Corresponding limit of detections (LOD) are 6.85 × 10^-8 and 1.82 × 10^-7 M, respectively. NABI efficiently detects intracellular Zn²⁺ and N₃^- ions with no cytotoxicity on J774A.1cells under fluorescence microscope. DFT studies unlock underlying spectroscopic properties of free NABI and Zn²⁺/N₃^- bound forms.

A novel ratiometric and turn-on fluorescent coumarin-based probe for Fe(iii)

6-Methoxy-3-(pyridin-2-yl)-2H-chromen-2-one exhibited fluorescence enhancement in the presence of Fe(iii). This molecule was a selective fluorescent chemosensor for Fe(iii).

A new multifunctional benzimidazole tagged coumarin as ratiometric fluorophore for the detection of Cd2+/F- ions and imaging in live cells

A novel multifunctional ratiometric fluorescent probe has been designed and synthesized for the selective recognition of Cd²⁺/F^- ions. The probe (3)-((2)-(1H-benzoimidazole-2-yl)-phenylimino) methyl-4-chloro-methyl-2H-chromen-2-ene (BIMC) displays excellent ratiometric responses towards Cd²⁺/F^- ions over the tested cations/anions. The lowest detection limits observed for Cd²⁺ and F^- are 1.5 × 10^-10 mol/l and 1.2 × 10^-10 mol/l respectively. Job's plot and Electro spray Ionization mass spectral (ESI-MS) studies confirms 1:1 binding stoichiometry of BIMC with Cd²⁺/F^- ions, which is further evidenced by ¹H NMR titration studies. The reversibility studies of BIMC with Cd²⁺ have been investigated using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Upon binding to Cd²⁺/F^- ions, the probe features strong ratiometric response in both UV-Visible and fluorescence spectra due to the inhibition of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT). Furthermore, the mechanism of ICT has been rationalized via solvatochromism and DFT calculations.

New phenazine based AIE probes for selective detection of aluminium(iii) ions in presence of other trivalent metal ions in living cells

Phenazine fluorophore based imidazole derivatives (S1 and S2) were synthesized and sensor studies were carried out with various cations. Aggregation induced emission (AIE) was observed selectively for Al³⁺ among other cations under study in case of both sensors. ¹H NMR titration supported the aggregation induced emission of S2 with Al³⁺. ESI mass spectra successfully confirmed the aggregate formation. SEM images clearly showed the aggregation of receptor induced by Al³⁺ in a flower-like fashion. AIE probe was successfully applied for bio-imaging of RAW264.7 cells.

Highly Selective Detection of Cr3 + Ion with Colorimetric & Fluorescent Response Via Chemodosimetric Approach in Aqueous Medium

So far, very few numbers of chemosensors for Cr³⁺ ion have been reported. However, the main drawback of reported receptors are the lack of selectivity and other trivalent cations such as Fe³⁺, Al³⁺ and anions like F^- and ^-OAc frequently interfere with such assays. This paper present the synthesis, characterization & sensor studies of Schiff base containing naphthalene moiety which selectively detect Cr³⁺ ion by chemodosimetric approach. Using FT-IR, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR and ESI mass spectroscopic techniques the probe was characterized. This receptor exhibit more selectivity and sensitivity towards Cr³⁺ than other divalent and trivalent cations like Mn²⁺, Zn²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺, Hg²⁺, Fe³⁺, and Al³⁺ ions. After the addition of chromium ion the receptor get change from yellow to colorless in aqueous medium. But no color change was observed on the addition of other metal ions. Using UV-Vis and PL studies, it was confirmed that the selective hydrolysis of imine group of receptor by Cr³⁺ ions takes place with high fluorescence enhancement that is corresponding to 1-naphthylamine. Receptor acts as selective chemodosimeter for Cr³⁺ ions with 2:1 stoichiometry and micro molar detection limit. This chemodosimetric approach was applied successfully for bio-imaging of HeLa cells.

A novel, highly sensitive, selective, reversible and turn-on chemi-sensor based on Schiff base for rapid detection of Cu(II)

In this work, a novel optical fluoro-chemisensor was designed and synthesized for copper (II) ions detection. The sensor film is created by embedded N,N-Bis(2-hydroxo-5-bromobenzyl)ethylenediamine in poly vinyl chloride (PVC) film in presence of dioctyl phthalate (DOP) as plasticizer. The receptor Schiff base reveals "off-on" mode with high selectivity, significant sensitivity to Cu(II) ions. The selectivity of optical sensor for Cu(II) ions is the result of chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF). The optimal conditions of pH and response time at which higher efficiency of sensor film is performed was found to be 6.8 and 2.48min. The possible interference of other metal ions in solution was examined in presence of different types of metal ions. This film shows high selectivity and ultra-sensitivity with low detection limit LOD (1.1×10^-8M). Thus, these considerable properties make it viable to monitor copper metal ions within very low concentration range (0-15×10^-6M Cu(II)) and highly selective even in the presence of different types of metal ions. The sensor reversibility was achieved by utilizing EDTA solution with concentration of 0.1M solution.
