Characterization of a 1:1 Cu−O2 Adduct Supported by an Anilido Imine Ligand

Interpreting the Cu-O2 Antibonding Nature in Two Cu-O2 Complexes from Cu L-Edge X-ray Absorption Spectra

Cu-O2 structures play important roles in bioinorganic chemistry and enzyme catalysis, where the bonding between the Cu and O2 parts serves as a fundamental research concern. Here, we performed a multiconfigurational study on the copper L2,3-edge X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) of two copper enzyme model complexes to gain a better understanding of the antibonding nature from the clearly interpreted structure-spectroscopy relation. We obtained spectra in good agreement with the experiments by using the restricted active space second-order perturbation theory (RASPT2) method, which facilitated reliable chemical analysis. Spectral feature interpretations were supported by computing the spin-orbit natural transition orbitals. All major features were assigned to be mainly from Cu 2p to antibonding orbitals between Cu 3d and O2 π*, Cu 3d-πO-O* (type A), and a few also to mixed antibonding/bonding orbitals between Cu 3d and O2 π, Cu 3d ± πO-O (type M). Our calculations provided a clear illustration of the interactions between Cu 3d and O2 π*/π orbitals that are carried in the metal L-edge XAS.

High-Valent Ni and Cu Complexes of a Tetraanionic Bis(amidateanilido) Ligand

High-valent metal species are often invoked as intermediates during enzymatic and synthetic catalytic cycles. Anionic donors are often required to stabilize such high-valent states by forming strong bonds with the Lewis acidic metal centers while decreasing their oxidation potentials. In this report, we discuss the synthesis of two high-valent metal complexes [ML]+ in which the NiIII and CuIII centers are ligated by a new tetradentate, tetraanionic bis(amidateanilido) ligand. [ML]+, obtained via chemical oxidation of ML, exhibits UV-vis-NIR, EPR, and XANES spectra characteristic of square planar, high-valent MIII species, suggesting the locus of oxidation for both [ML]+ is predominantly metal-based. This is supported by theoretical analyses, which also support the observed visible transitions as ligand-to-metal charge transfer transitions characteristic of square planar, high-valent MIII species. Notably, [ML]+ can also be obtained via O2 oxidation of ML due to its remarkably negative oxidation potentials (CuL/[CuL]+: -1.16 V, NiL/[NiL]+: -1.01 V vs Fc/Fc+ in MeCN). This demonstrates the exceptionally strong donating nature of the tetraanionic bis(amidateanilido) ligation and its ability to stabilize high-valent metal centers..

Ligand Degradation Study of Unsymmetrical β-Diketiminato Copper Dioxygen Adducts: The Length Chelating Arm Effect

An investigation on the reactivity of O₂ binding to unsymmetrical β-diketiminato copper(I) complexes by spectroscopic and titration analysis was performed. The length of chelating pyridyl arms (pyridylmethyl arm vs pyridylethyl arm) leads to the formation of mono- or di-nuclear copper-dioxygen species at -80 °C. The pyridylmethyl arm adduct (L₁CuO₂) forms mononuclear copper-oxygen species and shows ligand degradation, resulting in the formation of (2E,3Z)-N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-4-(((E)-pyridin-2-ylmethylene)amino)pent-3-en-2-imine, which slowly converts to its cyclization isomer 1-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-4,6-dimethyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2-dihydropyrimidine after addition of NH₄OH at room temperature. On the other hand, the pyridylethyl arm adduct [(L₂Cu)₂(μ-O)₂] forms dinuclear species at -80 °C and does not show any ligand degradation product. Instead, free ligand formation was observed after the addition of NH₄OH. These experimental observations and product analysis results indicate that the chelating length of pyridyl arms governs the Cu/O₂ binding ratio and the ligand degradation behavior.

Syntheses and investigation of metal complexes with macrocyclic polythioether ligands

Copper(I) complexes with the macrocyclic thioether ligands 1,4,8,11-tetrathiacyclotetradecane (tetrathiacyclam, 14-S₄) and 1,8-dithia-4,11-diazacyclotetradecane (dithiacyclam, 14-N₂S₂) were synthesised and structurally characterised. While the copper(I) complexes showed no reactivity towards dioxygen, the formation of "dioxygen adduct complexes" could be spectroscopically detected with ozone using low temperature stopped-flow techniques. Furthermore, it was possible to synthesise and characterise iron(II) and cobalt(II) complexes with the tetrathiacyclam ligand. No "dioxygen adduct" intermediates were observed when these complexes were reacted with dioxygen or ozone. Depending on the reaction conditions, the coordination of the metal ions could be controlled (endo- vs. exo-coordination and cis- vs. trans-coordination) and in addition to mononuclear complexes, also coordination polymers were obtained.

Sterically Stabilized End-On Superoxocopper(II) Complexes and Mechanistic Insights into Their Reactivity with O-H, N-H, and C-H Substrates

Instability of end-on superoxocopper(II) complexes, with respect to conversion to peroxo-bridged dicopper(II) complexes, has largely constrained their study to very low temperatures. This limits their kinetic capacity to oxidize substrates. In response, we have developed a series of bulky ligands, Ar₃-TMPA (Ar = tpb, dpb, dtbpb), and used them to support copper(I) complexes that react with O₂ to yield [Cu^II(η¹-O₂^•-)(Ar₃-TMPA)]⁺ species, which are stable against dimerization at all temperatures. Binding of O₂ saturates at subambient temperatures and can be reversed by warming. The onset of oxygenation for the Ar = tpb and dpb systems is observed at 25 °C, and all three [Cu^II(η¹-O₂^•-)(Ar₃-TMPA)]⁺ complexes are stable against self-decay at temperatures of ≤-20 °C. This provides a wide temperature window for study of these complexes, which was exploited by performing extensive reaction kinetics measurements for [Cu^II(η¹-O₂^•-)(tpb₃-TMPA)]⁺ using a broad range of O-H, N-H, and C-H bond substrates. This includes correlation of second order rate constants (k₂) versus oxidation potentials (E_ox) for a range of phenols, construction of Eyring plots, and temperature-dependent kinetic isotope effect (KIE) measurements. The data obtained indicate that reaction with all substrates proceeds via H atom transfer (HAT), reaction with the phenols proceeds with significant charge transfer, and full tunneling of both H and D atoms occurs in the case of 1,2-diphenylhydrazine and 4-methoxy-2,6-di-tert-butylphenol. Oxidation of C-H bonds proved to be kinetically challenging, and whereas [Cu^II(η¹-O₂^•-)(tpb₃-TMPA)]⁺ can oxidize moderately strong O-H and N-H bonds, it is only able to oxidize very weak C-H bonds.

Structural and Spectroscopic Evidence for a Side-on Fe(III)-Superoxo Complex Featuring Discrete O-O Bond Distances

The O-O bond length is often used as a structural indicator to determine the valence states of bound O₂ ligands in biological metal-dioxygen intermediates and related biomimetic complexes. Here, we report very distinct O-O bond lengths found for three crystallographic forms (1.229(4), 1.330(4), 1.387(2) Å at 100 K) of a side-on iron-dioxygen species. Despite their different O-O bond distances, all forms possess the same electronic structure of Fe(III)-O₂ ^•-, as evidenced by their indistinguishable spectroscopic features. Density functional theory and ab initio calculations, which successfully reproduce spectroscopic parameters, predict a flat potential energy surface of an η²-O₂ motif binding to the iron center regarding the O-O distance. Therefore, the discrete O-O bond lengths observed likely arise from differential intermolecular interactions in the second coordination sphere. The work suggests that the O-O distance is not a reliable benchmark to unequivocally identify the valence state of O₂ ligands for metal-dioxygen species in O₂-utilizing metalloproteins and synthetic complexes.

Cu(III)-bis-thiolato complex forms an unusual mono-thiolato Cu(III)-peroxido adduct

The stable complex [bis(toluene-3,4-dithiolato)copper(iii)][NEt3H] has been synthesised and characterised as a square-planar Cu(iii) complex by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and DFT calculations. Intriguingly, when fragmented in FTICR-MS, an unusual [(toluene-3,4-dithiolate)Cu(iii)(peroxide)]- complex is formed by reaction with oxygen. Natural 1,2-dithiolenes known to bind molybdenum might stabilise Cu(iii) in vivo.

Formation of N-oxido copper ethylenediaminetetraacetate and propanediaminetetraacetate and their selective degradation to iminodiacetate and propanediaminediacetate

N-Oxido copper(ii) ethylenediaminetetraacetate Na_4n[Cu₂(edtaO₂)₂(H₂O)₄]_n·13nH₂O (2) (H₄edta = ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, C₁₀H₁₆O₈N₂) and N-oxido copper(ii) 1,3-propanediaminetetraacetate Na_5nO_n[Cu₂(HpdtaO₂)₂Cl]_n·12.5nH₂O (4) (H₄pdta = 1,3-propanediaminetetraacetic acid, C₁₁H₁₈O₈N₂) were obtained from the reactions of copper(ii) edta and pdta respectively with hydrogen peroxide. The copper ions in 2 and 4 are hexa-coordinated by edtaO₂ or pdtaO₂ ligands, forming 1D chain structures. Further reactions of 2 and 4 at lower pH values result in the isolation of copper(ii) iminodiacetate K[Cu(ida)(H₂O)₂Cl] (3) (H₂ida = iminodiacetate acid, C₄H₇O₄N) and copper(ii) propanediaminediacetate [Cu₂(pdda)₂]_n·nH₂O (5) (H₂pdda = propanediaminediacetic acid, C₇H₁₀O₄N₂), respectively, which show the selective degradation of ethylenediaminetetraacetate and propanediaminetetraacetate.

Utilising an anilido-imino ligand to stabilise zinc-phosphanide complexes: reactivity and fluorescent properties

A series of zinc complexes bearing the anilido-imino ligand [(o-C6H4{N(C6H3iPr2)}{C(CH3) = NC6H3iPr2})] [(LDipp)ZnX] has been generated. This includes two amide derivatives, [(LDipp)Zn(N{SiMe3}2)] and [(LDipp)Zn(NH{Dipp})] and two phosphanide derivatives, [(LDipp)ZnPCy2] and [(LDipp)ZnPPh2]. The chemistry of the phosphanide complexes towards chalcogens was examined, with sulfur, selenium and tellurium oxidising the phosphorus centre of the dicylohexylphosphanide complex [(LDipp)ZnPCy2] to form [(LDipp)Zn(E)2PCy2] (E = S, Se, Te). Addition of tellurium to the diphenylphosphanide complex [(LDipp)ZnPPh2] results in formation of Ph2PPPh2 and [(LDipp)ZnTeZn(LDipp)]. The absorption and emission properties of these complexes was examined and the quantum yields are highly dependent upon the non-ancillary ligand X.

Synthetic Fe/Cu Complexes: Toward Understanding Heme-Copper Oxidase Structure and Function

Heme-copper oxidases (HCOs) are terminal enzymes on the mitochondrial or bacterial respiratory electron transport chain, which utilize a unique heterobinuclear active site to catalyze the 4H+/4e- reduction of dioxygen to water. This process involves a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) from a tyrosine (phenolic) residue and additional redox events coupled to transmembrane proton pumping and ATP synthesis. Given that HCOs are large, complex, membrane-bound enzymes, bioinspired synthetic model chemistry is a promising approach to better understand heme-Cu-mediated dioxygen reduction, including the details of proton and electron movements. This review encompasses important aspects of heme-O2 and copper-O2 (bio)chemistries as they relate to the design and interpretation of small molecule model systems and provides perspectives from fundamental coordination chemistry, which can be applied to the understanding of HCO activity. We focus on recent advancements from studies of heme-Cu models, evaluating experimental and computational results, which highlight important fundamental structure-function relationships. Finally, we provide an outlook for future potential contributions from synthetic inorganic chemistry and discuss their implications with relevance to biological O2-reduction.

A Structurally Characterized CuIII Complex Supported by a Bis(anilido) Ligand and Its Oxidative Catalytic Activity

Three copper(II) complexes of the (R,R)-N,N'-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-aminobenzylidene)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane ligand, namely [Cu(^N L)], [Cu(^N LH)]⁺ and [Cu(^N LH₂ )]²⁺ , were prepared and structurally characterized. In [Cu(^N LH₂ )]²⁺ the copper ion lies in an octahedral geometry with the aniline groups coordinated in equatorial positions. In [Cu(^N L)] the anilines are deprotonated (anilido moieties) and coordinated to an almost square-planar metal ion. Complex [Cu(^N L)] displays two oxidation waves at E_1/2^ox, 1 =-0.14 V and E_1/2^ox, 2 =0.36 V vs. Fc⁺ /Fc in CH₂ Cl₂ . Complex [Cu(^N LH₂ )]²⁺ displays an irreversible oxidation wave at high potential (1.21 V), but shows a readily accessible and reversible metal-centered reduction at E_1/2^red =-0.67 V (Cu^II /Cu^I redox couple). Oxidation of [Cu(^N L)] by AgSbF₆ produces [Cu(^N L)](SbF₆ ), which was isolated as single crystals. X-ray structure analysis discloses a contraction of the coordination sphere by 0.05 Å upon oxidation, supporting a metal-centered process. Complex [Cu(^N L)](SbF₆ ) displays an intense NIR band at 1260 nm corresponding to an anilido-to-copper(III) charge transfer transition. This compound slowly evolves in CH₂ Cl₂ solution towards [Cu(^N LH)](SbF₆ ), which is a copper(II) complex comprised of both anilido and aniline groups coordinated to the metal center. The copper(III) complex [Cu(^N L)](SbF₆ ) is an efficient catalyst for benzyl alcohol oxidation, with 236 TON in 24 h at 298 K, without additives other than oxygen and a base.

Reactivity of a stable copper-dioxygen complex

We report the isolation of a room temperature stable dipyrromethene Cu(O2) complex featuring a side-on O2 coordination. Reactivity studies highlight the unique ability of the dioxygen adduct for both hydrogen-atom abstraction and acid/base chemistry towards phenols, demonstrating that side-on superoxide species can be reactive entities.

Decoding the Mechanism of Intramolecular Cu-Directed Hydroxylation of sp3 C-H Bonds

The use of copper in directed C-H oxidation has been relatively underexplored. In a seminal example, Schönecker showed that copper and O2 promoted the hydroxylation of steroid-containing ligands. Recently, Baran (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2015, 137, 13776) improved the reaction conditions to oxidize similar substrates with excellent yields. In both reports, the involvement of Cu2O2 intermediates was suggested. In this collaborative article, we studied the hydroxylation mechanism in great detail, resulting in the overhaul of the previously accepted mechanism and the development of improved reaction conditions. Extensive experimental evidence (spectroscopic characterization, kinetic analysis, intermolecular reactivity, and radical trap experiments) is provided to support each of the elementary steps proposed and the hypothesis that a key mononuclear LCuII(OOR) intermediate undergoes homolytic O-O cleavage to generate reactive RO• species, which are responsible for key C-H hydroxylation within the solvent cage. These key findings allowed the oxidation protocol to be reformulated, leading to improvements of the reaction cost, practicability, and isolated yield.

Copper-Oxygen Complexes Revisited: Structures, Spectroscopy, and Reactivity

A longstanding research goal has been to understand the nature and role of copper-oxygen intermediates within copper-containing enzymes and abiological catalysts. Synthetic chemistry has played a pivotal role in highlighting the viability of proposed intermediates and expanding the library of known copper-oxygen cores. In addition to the number of new complexes that have been synthesized since the previous reviews on this topic in this journal (Mirica, L. M.; Ottenwaelder, X.; Stack, T. D. P. Chem. Rev. 2004, 104, 1013-1046 and Lewis, E. A.; Tolman, W. B. Chem. Rev. 2004, 104, 1047-1076), the field has seen significant expansion in the (1) range of cores synthesized and characterized, (2) amount of mechanistic work performed, particularly in the area of organic substrate oxidation, and (3) use of computational methods for both the corroboration and prediction of proposed intermediates. The scope of this review has been limited to well-characterized examples of copper-oxygen species but seeks to provide a thorough picture of the spectroscopic characteristics and reactivity trends of the copper-oxygen cores discussed.

The reaction of a series of dinucleating bis(β-diketiminate) pro-ligands with mesitylcopper in the presence and absence of mono and diphosphines has allowed the isolation of a new series of dicopper(i) complexes.

On the non-innocence of “Nacnacs”: ligand-based reactivity in β-diketiminate supported coordination compounds

While β-diketiminate (BDI or ‘nacnac’) ligands have been widely adopted to stabilize a wide range of metal ions in multiple oxidation states and coordination numbers, in several occurrences these ligands do not behave as spectators and participate in reactivity.

Re-evaluating the Cu K pre-edge XAS transition in complexes with covalent metal-ligand interactions

Three [Me2NN]Cu(η2-L2) complexes (Me2NN = HC[C(Me)NAr]2; L2 = PhNO (2), (3), PhCH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH2 (4); Ar = 2,6-Me2-C6H3; ArF = 3,5-(CF3)2-C6H3) have been studied by Cu K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy, as well as single- and multi-reference computational methods (DFT, TD-DFT, CASSCF, MRCI, and OVB). The study was extended to a range of both known and theoretical compounds bearing 2p-element donors as a means of deriving a consistent view of how the pre-edge transition energy responds in systems with significant ground state covalency. The ground state electronic structures of many of the compounds under investigation were found to be strongly influenced by correlation effects, resulting in ground state descriptions with majority contributions from a configuration comprised of a Cu(ii) metal center anti-ferromagentically coupled to radical anion O2, PhNO, and ligands. In contrast, the styrene complex 4, which displays a Cu K pre-edge transition despite its formal d10 electron configuration, exhibits what can best be described as a Cu(i):(styrene)0 ground state with strong π-backbonding. The Cu K pre-edge features for these complexes increase in energy from 1 to 4, a trend that was tracked to the percent Cu(ii)-character in the ground state. The unexpected shift to higher pre-edge transition energies with decreasing charge on copper (Q Cu) contributed to an assignment of the pre-edge features for these species as arising from metal-to-ligand charge transfer instead of the traditional Cu1s → Cu3d designation.

Stepwise protonation and electron-transfer reduction of a primary copper-dioxygen adduct

The protonation–reduction of a dioxygen adduct with [LCu(I)][B(C6F5)4], cupric superoxo complex [LCu(II)(O2(•–))]+ (1) (L = TMG3tren (1,1,1-tris[2-[N(2)-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidino)]ethyl]amine)) has been investigated. Trifluoroacetic acid (HOAcF) reversibly associates with the superoxo ligand in ([LCu(II)(O2(•–))]+) in a 1:1 adduct [LCu(II)(O2(•–))(HOAcF)](+) (2), as characterized by UV–visible, resonance Raman (rR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and X-ray absorption (XAS) spectroscopies, along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Chemical studies reveal that for the binding of HOAcF with 1 to give 2, Keq = 1.2 × 10(5) M(–1) (−130 °C) and ΔH° = −6.9(7) kcal/mol, ΔS° = −26(4) cal mol(–1) K(–1)). Vibrational (rR) data reveal a significant increase (29 cm(–1)) in vO–O (= 1149 cm(–1)) compared to that known for [LCu(II)(O2(•–))](+) (1). Along with results obtained from XAS and DFT calculations, hydrogen bonding of HOAcF to a superoxo O-atom in 2 is established. Results from NMR spectroscopy of 2 at −120 °C in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran are also consistent with 1/HOAcF = 1:1 formulation of 2 and with this complex possessing a triplet (S = 1) ground state electronic configuration, as previously determined for 1. The pre-equilibrium acid association to 1 is followed by outer-sphere electron-transfer reduction of 2 by decamethylferrocene (Me10Fc) or octamethylferrocene (Me8Fc), leading to the products H2O2, the corresponding ferrocenium salt, and [LCu(II)(OAcF)](+). Second-order rate constants for electron transfer (ket) were determined to be 1365 M(–1) s(–1) (Me10Fc) and 225 M(–1) s(–1) (Me8Fc) at −80 °C. The (bio)chemical relevance of the proton-triggered reduction of the metal-bound dioxygen-derived fragment is discussed.

Cu(I)/O2 chemistry using a β-diketiminate supporting ligand derived from N,N-dimethylhydrazine: a [Cu3O2]3+ complex with novel reactivity

A Cu(I) complex, LCu(CH(3)CN), was prepared and characterized, where L(-) is a sterically unencumbered β-diketiminate ligand, the deprotonated version of 4-(2,2-dimethylhydrazino)dimethylhydrazone-3-penten-2-one (LH). Analysis of FTIR spectra of the products of the reaction of LCu(CH(3)CN) with CO indicate that L(-) is strongly electron donating, and support an equilibrium in solution between monomeric and dimeric forms with terminal and bridging CO ligands, respectively. Low temperature oxygenation of LCu(CH(3)CN) generated a bis(μ-oxo)tricopper complex with a S = 1 [Cu(3)O(2)](3+) core that was identified on the basis of UV-vis (λ(max) (ε, M(-1) cm(-1) per Cu) = 328 (10700), 420 (1500), 590 (835) nm) and X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy (Δm(s) = 2 transition at 1500 G), electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry, and spectrophotometric titration (0.35(2) equiv of O(2) per copper atom), magnetic susceptibility (μ(eff) = 2.8(1) BM), and H(2)O(2) detection experiments (no H(2)O(2) evolved upon acidification). Unlike other reported variants supported by neutral N-donor ligands, L(3)Cu(3)O(2) is not reduced by ferrocene, does not abstract H-atoms from phenols or 1,2-dihydroanthracene, oxidizes PPh(3) to Ph(3)P═O, and generates carbonate species upon exposure to CO(2). This unique reactivity for a [Cu(3)O(2)](3+) complex may be traced to the anionic charge and strong electron donating characteristics of L(-).

Geometric and electronic structure and reactivity of a mononuclear "side-on" nickel(III)-peroxo complex

Metal-dioxygen adducts, such as metal-superoxo and -peroxo species, are key intermediates often detected in the catalytic cycles of dioxygen activation by metalloenzymes and biomimetic compounds. The synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of an end-on nickel(II)-superoxo complex with a 14-membered macrocyclic ligand was reported previously. Here we report the isolation, spectroscopic characterization, and high-resolution crystal structure of a mononuclear side-on nickel(III)-peroxo complex with a 12-membered macrocyclic ligand, [Ni(12-TMC)(O(2))](+) (1) (12-TMC = 1,4,7,10-tetramethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane). Different from the end-on Ni(II)-superoxo complex, the Ni(III)-peroxo complex is not reactive in electrophilic reactions, but is capable of conducting nucleophilic reactions. The Ni(III)-peroxo complex transfers the bound dioxygen to manganese(II) complexes, thus affording the corresponding nickel(II) and manganese(III)-peroxo complexes. The present results demonstrate the significance of supporting ligands in tuning the geometric and electronic structures and reactivities of metal-O(2) intermediates that have been shown to have biological as well as synthetic usefulness in biomimetic reactions.

Synthesis, structural, and spectroscopic characterization and reactivities of mononuclear cobalt(III)-peroxo complexes

Metal-dioxygen adducts are key intermediates detected in the catalytic cycles of dioxygen activation by metalloenzymes and biomimetic compounds. In this study, mononuclear cobalt(III)-peroxo complexes bearing tetraazamacrocyclic ligands, [Co(12-TMC)(O(2))](+) and [Co(13-TMC)(O(2))](+), were synthesized by reacting [Co(12-TMC)(CH(3)CN)](2+) and [Co(13-TMC)(CH(3)CN)](2+), respectively, with H(2)O(2) in the presence of triethylamine. The mononuclear cobalt(III)-peroxo intermediates were isolated and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and X-ray crystallography, and the structural and spectroscopic characterization demonstrated unambiguously that the peroxo ligand is bound in a side-on η(2) fashion. The O-O bond stretching frequency of [Co(12-TMC)(O(2))](+) and [Co(13-TMC)(O(2))](+) was determined to be 902 cm(-1) by resonance Raman spectroscopy. The structural properties of the CoO(2) core in both complexes are nearly identical; the O-O bond distances of [Co(12-TMC)(O(2))](+) and [Co(13-TMC)(O(2))](+) were 1.4389(17) Å and 1.438(6) Å, respectively. The cobalt(III)-peroxo complexes showed reactivities in the oxidation of aldehydes and O(2)-transfer reactions. In the aldehyde oxidation reactions, the nucleophilic reactivity of the cobalt-peroxo complexes was significantly dependent on the ring size of the macrocyclic ligands, with the reactivity of [Co(13-TMC)(O(2))](+) > [Co(12-TMC)(O(2))](+). In the O(2)-transfer reactions, the cobalt(III)-peroxo complexes transferred the bound peroxo group to a manganese(II) complex, affording the corresponding cobalt(II) and manganese(III)-peroxo complexes. The reactivity of the cobalt-peroxo complexes in O(2)-transfer was also significantly dependent on the ring size of tetraazamacrocycles, and the reactivity order in the O(2)-transfer reactions was the same as that observed in the aldehyde oxidation reactions.

An anionic, tetragonal copper(II) superoxide complex

Insight into copper-oxygen species proposed as intermediates in oxidation catalysis is provided by the identification of a Cu(II)-superoxide complex supported by a sterically hindered, pyridinedicarboxamide ligand. A tetragonal, end-on superoxide structure is proposed based on DFT calculations and UV-vis, NMR, EPR, and resonance Raman spectroscopy. The complex yields a trans-1,2-peroxodicopper(II) species upon reaction with [(tmpa)Cu(CH(3)CN)]OTf and, unlike other known Cu(II)-superoxide complexes, acts as a base rather than an electrophilic (H-atom abstracting) reagent in reactions with phenols.

Effects of electron-deficient beta-diketiminate and formazan supporting ligands on copper(I)-mediated dioxygen activation

Copper(I) complexes of a diketiminate featuring CF(3) groups on the backbone and dimethylphenyl substituents (4) and a nitroformazan (5) were synthesized and shown by spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, cyclic voltammetry, and theory to contain copper(I) sites electron-deficient relative to those supported by previously studied diketiminate complexes comprising alkyl or aryl backbone substituents. Despite their electron-poor nature, oxygenation of LCu(CH(3)CN) (L = 4 or 5) at room temperature yielded bis(hydroxo)dicopper(II) compounds and at -80 degrees C yielded bis(mu-oxo)dicopper complexes that were identified on the basis of UV-vis and resonance Raman spectroscopy, spectrophotometric titration results (2:1 Cu/O(2) ratio), electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (silent), and density functional theory calculations. The bis(mu-oxo)dicopper complex supported by 5 exhibited unusual spectroscopic properties and decayed via a novel intermediate proposed to be a metallaverdazyl radical complex, findings that highlight the potential for the formazan ligand to exhibit "noninnocent" behavior.

Probing the mechanism of O2 activation by a copper(I) biomimetic complex of a C-H hydroxylating copper monooxygenase

In this paper, we report, for the first time, a plausible full reaction pathway for the activation of O(2) by a tetraazamacrocyclic monocopper(I) complex and for the subsequent intramolecular alkylic hydroxylation to yield the alkoxide product. This theoretical insight offers remarkable support to the fundamental hypothesis in the field that a hydroperoxo complex of the type Cu(II)OOH intermediate is the key intermediate in this class of reactions. Overall, we give insight into an intramolecular alkylic C-H bond activation due to the O(2) binding to copper(I) with an end-on eta(1)-O(2) ligation. The loss of a water molecule involves the final substrate oxygenation. The complex we consider is a biomimetic of several systems of biological relevance, such as amine oxidases, peptidylglycine-alpha-hydroxylating monooxygenase, and dopamine-beta monooxygenases.
