Abstract
To unravel the role of driving force and structural changes in directing the photoinduced pathways in donor-bridge-acceptor (DBA) systems, we compared the ultrafast dynamics in novel DBAs which share a phenothiazine (PTZ) electron donor and a Pt(ii) trans-acetylide bridge (-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Pt-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-), but bear different acceptors conjugated into the bridge (naphthalene-diimide, NDI; or naphthalene-monoimide, NAP). The excited state dynamics were elucidated by transient absorption, time-resolved infrared (TRIR, directly following electron density changes on the bridge/acceptor), and broadband fluorescence-upconversion (FLUP, directly following sub-picosecond intersystem crossing) spectroscopies, supported by TDDFT calculations. Direct conjugation of a strong acceptor into the bridge leads to switching of the lowest excited state from the intraligand 3IL state to the desired charge-separated 3CSS state. We observe two surprising effects of an increased strength of the acceptor in NDI vs. NAP: a ca. 70-fold slow-down of the 3CSS formation-(971 ps)-1vs. (14 ps)-1, and a longer lifetime of the 3CSS (5.9 vs. 1 ns); these are attributed to differences in the driving force ΔGet, and to distance dependence. The 100-fold increase in the rate of intersystem crossing-to sub-500 fs-by the stronger acceptor highlights the role of delocalisation across the heavy-atom containing bridge in this process. The close proximity of several excited states allows one to control the yield of 3CSS from ∼100% to 0% by solvent polarity. The new DBAs offer a versatile platform for investigating the role of bridge vibrations as a tool to control excited state dynamics.

Abstract
The lack of efficient and robust deep-blue phosphorescent metal complexes remains a significant challenge in the context of electroluminescent color displays. The emissive triplet states of blue phosphors are deactivated by low-lying metal-centered (3MC) states, which can be ameliorated by increasing the σ-donating ability of the supporting ligands. Here we unveil a synthetic strategy to access blue-phosphorescent complexes with two supporting acyclic diaminocarbenes (ADCs), known to be even stronger σ-donors than N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). This new class of platinum complexes has excellent photoluminescence quantum yields, with four of six complexes affording deep-blue emission. Experimental and computational analyses are consistent with a pronounced destabilization of the 3MC states by the ADCs.

Abstract
Self-assembly of (Bu4N)4[β-Mo8O26], AgNO3, and 2-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-imino]acenaphthene (dpp-bian) in DMF solution resulted in the (Bu4N)2[β-{Ag(dpp-bian)}2Mo8O26] (1) complex. The complex was characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), diffuse reflectance (DR), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and elemental analysis. Comprehensive SCXRD studies of the crystal structure show the presence of Ag+ in an uncommon coordination environment without a clear preference for Ag-N over Ag-O bonding. Quantum chemical calculations were performed to qualify the nature of the Ag-N/Ag-O interactions and to assign the electronic transitions observed in the UV-Vis absorption spectra. The electrochemical behavior of the complex combines POM and redox ligand signatures. Complex 1 demonstrates catalytic activity in the electrochemical reduction of CO2.

Abstract
We introduce phosphorescent platinum aryl acetylide complexes supported by tert-butyl-isocyanide and strongly σ-donating acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC) ligands. The precursor complexes cis-[Pt(CNtBu)2(C≡CAr)2] (4a-4f) are treated with diethylamine, which undergoes nucleophilic addition with one of the isocyanides to form the cis-[Pt(CNtBu)(ADC)(C≡CAr)2] complexes (5a-5f). The new compounds incorporate either electron-donating groups (4-OMe and 4-NMe2) or electron-withdrawing groups [3,5-(OMe)2, 3,5-(CF3)2, 4-CN, and 4-NO2] on the aryl acetylide. Experimental HOMO-LUMO gaps, estimated from cyclic voltammetry, span the range of 2.68-3.61 eV and are in most cases smaller than the unsubstituted parent complex, as corroborated by DFT. In the ADC complexes, peak photoluminescence wavelengths span the range of 428 nm (2a, unsubstituted phenylacetylide) to 525 nm (5f, 4-NO2-substituted), with the substituents inducing a red shift in all cases. The phosphorescence E0,0 values and electrochemical HOMO-LUMO gaps are loosely correlated, showing that both can be reduced by either electron-donating or electron-withdrawing substituents on the aryl acetylides. The photoluminescence quantum yields in the ADC complexes are between 0.044 and 0.31 and the lifetimes are between 4.8 and 14 μs, a factor of 1.8-10× higher (for ΦPL) and 1.2-3.6× longer (for τ) than the respective isocyanide precursor (ΦPL = 0.014-0.12, τ = 2.8-8.2 μs).

Abstract
A series of heteroleptic square-planar Pt and Pd complexes with bis(diisopropylphenyl) iminoacenaphtene (dpp-Bian) and Cl, 1,3-dithia-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate (dmit), or 1,3-dithia-2-thione-4,5-diselenolate (dsit) ligands have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopic techniques, elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The intermolecular noncovalent interactions in the crystal structures were assessed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The anticancer activity of Pd complexes in breast cancer cell lines was limited by their solubility. Pd(dpp-Bian) complexes with dmit and dsit ligands as well as an uncoordinated dpp-Bian ligand were devoid of cytotoxicity, while the [Pd(dpp-Bian)Cl2] complex was cytotoxic. On the contrary, all Pt(dpp-Bian) complexes demonstrated anticancer activity in a low micromolar concentration range, which was 8-20 times higher than the activity of cisplatin, and up to 2.5-fold selectivity toward cancer cells over healthy fibroblasts. The presence of a redox-active dpp-Bian ligand in Pt and Pd complexes resulted in the induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cancer cells. In addition, these complexes were able to intercalate into DNA, indicating the dual mechanism of action.

Abstract
Here we report five blue-phosphorescent platinum bis-phenylacetylide complexes with an investigation of their photophysical and electrochemical attributes. Three of the complexes (1-3) are of the general formula cis-Pt(CNR)2 (C≡CPh)2 , in which CNR is a variably substituted isocyanide and C≡CPh is phenylacetylide. These isocyanide complexes serve as precursors for complexes of the general formula cis-Pt(CNR)(ADC)(C≡CPh)2 (4 and 5), in which ADC is an acyclic diaminocarbene installed by amine nucleophilic addition to one of the isocyanides. All of the complexes exhibit deep blue phosphorescence with λmax ∼430 nm in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin films. Whereas isocyanide complexes 1-3 exhibit modest photoluminescence quantum yields (ΦPL ), incorporation of one acyclic diaminocarbene ligand results in a three-fold to 16-fold increase in ΦPL while still maintaining an identical deep blue color profile.

Abstract
To study the effect of a stable radical on the photophysical properties of a phosphorescent Pt(II) coordination framework and the intramolecular magnetic interaction between radical ligands in the N^N Pt(II) bisacetylide complexes, we prepared a series of N^N Pt(II) bis(acetylide) complexes with oxoverdazyl radical acetylide ligands. The linker between the Pt(II) center and the spin carrier was systematically varied, to probe the effect on the sign and magnitude of the spin exchange interactions between the radical ligands and photophysical properties. The complexes were studied with steady-state and femtosecond/nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, continuous-wave electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) computations. The transient absorption spectral studies show that the doublet excited state of the radicals are short-lived (τD ≈ 2 ps) and nonfluorescent. Moreover, the intrinsic long-lived triplet excited state (τT = 1.2 μs) of the Pt(II) coordination center was efficiently quenched by the radical (τT = 6.9 ps for one representative radical Pt(II) complex). The intramolecular magnetic interaction between the radical ligands through the diamagnetic Pt(II) atom was studied with temperature-dependent EPR spectroscopy; antiferromagnetic exchange interaction (-J S1S2, J = -5.4 ± 0.1 cm-1) for the complex with the shortest radical-radical distance through bridge fragments was observed. DFT computations give similar results for the sign and magnitude of the J values. For complexes with larger inter-radical distance, however, very weak coupling between the radical ligands was observed (|J| < 0.7 cm-1). Our results are useful for the study of the effect of a radical on the photophysical properties of the phosphorescent transition-metal complexes.

Abstract
Modification of light-harvesting units with anchoring groups for surface attachment often compromises light-harnessing properties. Herein, a series of [donor-acceptor-anchor] platinum(II) diimine (bis-)acetylides was developed in order to systematically compare the effect of conjugated versus electronically decoupled modes of attachment of protected anchoring groups on the photophysical properties of light-harvesting units. The first examples of "decoupled" phosphonate diimine PtII complexes are reported, and their properties are compared and contrasted to those of carboxylate analogues studied by a diversity of methods. Ultrafast time-resolved IR and transient absorption spectroscopy revealed that all complexes have a charge-transfer (CT) lowest excited state with lifetimes between 2 and 14 ns. Vibrational signatures and dynamics of CT states were identified; the assignment of electronic states and their vibrational origin was aided by TDDFT calculations. Ultrafast energy redistribution accompanied by structural changes was directly captured in the CT states. A significant difference between the structures of the electronic ground and CT excited states, as well as differences in the structural reorganisation in the complexes bearing directly attached or electronically decoupled anchoring groups, was discovered. This work demonstrates that decoupling of the anchoring group from the light-harvesting core by a saturated spacer is an easy approach to combine surface attachment with high reduction potential and ten times longer lifetime of the CT excited state of the light-absorbing unit, and retain electron-transfer photoreactivity essential for light-harvesting applications.

Abstract
Bis(imino)acenaphthene (BIAN) zinc complexes with para-substituted aryl groups have been synthesized and investigated from the standpoint of their photophysical properties. Each complex was found to be nonemissive in solution. However, complexes 1-6 turned out to be emissive in the solid state, while complexes 7 and 8 remained nonemissive. The emissions for complexes 1-8 displayed color tunability ranging from red-yellow. A detailed crystallographic study of the "as-synthesized" structures revealed a distinct difference in the crystal packing environments of the emissive and nonemissive complexes. Furthermore, a solvatomorphic study provided further emission tunability via changes in the crystal packing environments of each solvatomorph. Lastly, TD-DFT calculations were performed in order to investigate the effect of different para-substituents on the flanking aryl rings of the BIAN ligand.

Abstract
Electron transfer (ET) from donor to acceptor is often mediated by nuclear-electronic (vibronic) interactions in molecular bridges. Using an ultrafast electronic-vibrational-vibrational pulse-sequence, we demonstrate how the outcome of light-induced ET can be radically altered by mode-specific infrared (IR) excitation of vibrations that are coupled to the ET pathway. Picosecond narrow-band IR excitation of high-frequency bridge vibrations in an electronically excited covalent trans-acetylide platinum(II) donor-bridge-acceptor system in solution alters both the dynamics and the yields of competing ET pathways, completely switching a charge separation pathway off. These results offer a step toward quantum control of chemical reactivity by IR excitation.

Abstract
The donor-acceptor complex [((O,N)Q(2-))Pt(pap(0))] (1; pap = phenylazopyridine, (O,N)Q(0) = 4,6-di-tert-butyl-N-phenyl-o-iminobenzoquinone), which displays strong π-bonding interactions and shows strong absorption in the near-IR region, has been investigated with respect to its redox-induced reactivity and electrochemical and excited-state properties. The one-electron-oxidized product [((O,N)Q(•-))Pt(pap(0))](BF4) ([1]BF4) was chemically isolated. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies establish the iminosemiquinone form of (O,N)Q in [1](+). Simulation of the cyclic voltammograms of 1 recorded in the presence of PPh3 elucidates the mechanism and delivers relevant thermodynamic and kinetic parameters for the redox-induced reaction with PPh3. The thermodynamically stable product of this reaction, complex [((O,N)Q(•-)) Pt(PPh3)2](PF6) ([2]PF6), was isolated and characterized by X-ray crystallography, electrochemistry, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Picosecond time-resolved infrared spectroscopic studies on complex 1b (one of the positional isomers of 1) and its analogue [((O,O)Q(2-))Pt(pap(0))] (3; (O,O)Q = 3,5-di-tert-butyl-o-benzoquinone) provided insight into the excited-state dynamics and revealed that the nature of the lowest excited state in the amidophenolate complex 1b is primarily diimine-ligand-based, while it is predominantly an interligand charge-transfer state in the case of 3. Density functional theory calculations on [1](n+) provided further insight into the nature of the frontier orbitals of various redox forms and vibrational mode assignments. We discuss the mechanistic details of the newly established redox-induced reactivity of 1 with electron donors and propose a mechanism for this process.

Abstract
Reaction of α-pyridoin and N-phenyl-o-phenylenediamine affords 2-(2-(phenylamino)phenylimino)-1,2-di(pyridin-2-yl)ethanol (L) which undergoes cyclization to a chiral diimine, 2-methoxy-1-phenyl-2,3-di(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2-dihydroquinoxaline, L(OMe) (conjugated 14πe system) in the presence of zinc(II), cadmium(II) and mercury(II) ions affording [Zn(L(OMe))Cl2] (1), [Cd2(L(OMe))2Cl4] (2) and [Hg2(L(OMe))2Cl4] (3) complexes. Ligand L and complexes 1-3 are substantiated by elemental analyses, mass, IR, (1)H NMR and UV-vis spectra including the single-crystal X-ray structures of 1 and 3. The possibility of the atropisomerism of L is restricted in cyclic L(OMe). L and complexes 1-3 are fluorescent in fluid solutions at 298 K (CH2Cl2: 1, λ(ex) = 470 nm, λ(em) = 627 nm, Φ = 0.014, τ(avg) = 2.5 ns; 2, λ(ex) = 430 nm, λ(em) = 599 nm, Φ = 0.08, τ(avg) = 7.6 ns; 3, λ(ex) = 415 nm, λ(em) = 600 nm, Φ = 0.021, τ(avg) = 2.8 ns). Time-resolved emission spectra (TRES) established that the two-component lifetimes of 1-3 are due to the existence of two conformers. Density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent (TD) DFT calculations authenticated that 1-3 complexes are fluorescent due to intra-ligand charge transfer (ILCT) to the π(diimines)* orbital.

Abstract
A class of molecular electron transfer cascades—those based on PtII
complexes of 2-(1-pyrazole)-pyridine (pzpy) ligands—are reported. The synthesis
of a new electron-acceptor imide-modified pzpy ligands is reported, and their
application to transition-metal chemistry demonstrated by the synthesis of the
PtII chloride and acetylide complexes. These donor–acceptor
assemblies are promising models for investigation of photoinduced charge
separation. Accordingly, picosecond time-resolved infrared (TRIR) and
femtosecond transient absorption (TA) studies have been undertaken to elucidate
the nature and dynamics of the lowest excited states in
Pt(NAP-pyr-pyrazole)(–CC–Ph–C7H15)2. It has
been established that the initial population of an MLL'CT excited state in the
chromophoric [Pt(pyridine-pyrazole)(acetylide)] core is followed by an electron
transfer to the naphthalimide (NAP) acceptor, forming a charge-separated state.
This state is characterized by a large shift in ν(CO) vibrations of the NAP
acceptor, as well as by a very intense and broad [×10 times in comparison to
ν(CO)] asymmetric acetylide stretch which incorporates –CC–Pt–CC– framework and
occurs at approximately 300 cm–1 lower in energy than its
ground-state counterpart. In CH2Cl2 at room temperature,
the charge-separated state with the lifetime of 150 ps collapses into an almost
isoenergetic NAP-localized triplet state; the rate of this transformation
changes upon decreasing the temperature to 263 K. This final excited state,
3NAP-(pyr-pyrazole)Pt(–CC–Ph–C7H15)2,
has an unusually long, for PtII complexes, excited-state lifetime of
tens of microseconds. The work demonstrates the possibility of tuning
excited-state properties in this new class of PtII chromophores
designed for electron-transfer cascades.

Abstract
A series of mononuclear complexes of the type [Pt(Bu(2)cat)(4,4'-R(2)-bipy)] [where Bu(2)cat is the dianion of 3,5-(t)Bu(2)-catechol and R = H, (t)Bu, or C(O)NEt(2)] and analogous dinuclear complexes based on the "back-to-back" bis-catechol ligand 3,3',4,4'-tetrahydroxybiphenyl have been studied in detail in both their ground and excited states by a range of physical methods including electrochemistry, UV/vis/near-IR, IR, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroelectrochemistry, and time-resolved IR (TRIR) and transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculations have been performed to support these studies, which provide a detailed picture of the ground- and excited-state electronic structures, and excited-state dynamics, of these complexes. Notable observations include the following: (i) for the first time, the lowest-energy catecholate → bipyridine (bpy) ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (LL'CT) excited states of these chromophores have been studied by TRIR spectroscopy, showing a range of transient bands associated with the bpy radical anion and semiquinone species, and back-electron-transfer occurring in hundreds of picoseconds; (ii) strong electronic coupling between the two catecholate units in the bridging ligand of the dinuclear complexes results in a delocalized, planar (class 3) "mixed-valence" catecholate(2-)/semiquinone(•-) state formed by one-electron oxidation of the bridging ligand; (iii) in the LL'CT excited state of the dinuclear complexes, the bridging ligand is symmetrical and delocalized, whereas the bpy radical anion is localized at one terminus of the complex. This study is the first example of an investigation of excited-state behavior in platinum(II) catecholate complexes, performed with the use of picosecond TRIR and femtosecond TA spectroscopy.

Abstract
In spite of the fact that cadmium(II) has been recognized as a highly toxic element and that excessive exposure to this metal ion has been reported to have many adverse effects on human health, very few selective and specific fluorescent probes are available for imaging Cd(2+) in living cells. Herein, we report the spectroscopic and photochemical characterization of 5-(5-chloro-8-hydroxyquinolinylmethyl)-2,8-dithia-5-aza-2,6-pyridinophane (L) as a fluorescent sensor for the selective imaging of Cd(2+) in living cells. In particular, the response of L to Cd(2+) was first assessed in aqueous solutions, sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles, and liposomes, and subsequently in living cells by fluorescence microscopy techniques. Cytofluorimetric analyses of leukemic HL-60 cells loaded with L also allowed evaluation of the toxicity of the probe and the selective analysis of its intracellular fluorescence in the presence of Cd(2+). Furthermore, the 1:1 complex species [Cd(L)H(2)O](2+) responsible for the OFF-ON chelation enhancement of fluorescence (CHEF) effect on L was structurally characterized; time-dependent DFT calculations allowed the prediction of theoretical excitations, which were comparable with the experimental ones.
