Quantifying Photoinduced Polaronic Distortions in Inorganic Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Topological polarons in halide perovskites

Halide perovskites emerged as a revolutionary family of high-quality semiconductors for solar energy harvesting and energy-efficient lighting. There is mounting evidence that the exceptional optoelectronic properties of these materials could stem from unconventional electron-phonon couplings, and it has been suggested that the formation of polarons and self-trapped excitons could be key to understanding such properties. By performing first-principles simulations across the length scales, here we show that halide perovskites harbor a uniquely rich variety of polaronic species, including small polarons, large polarons, and charge density waves, and we explain a variety of experimental observations. We find that these emergent quasiparticles support topologically nontrivial phonon fields with quantized topological charge, making them nonmagnetic analog of the helical Bloch points found in magnetic skyrmion lattices.

Exciton polaron formation and hot-carrier relaxation in rigid Dion-Jacobson-type two-dimensional perovskites

The efficiency of two-dimensional Dion-Jacobson-type materials relies on the complex interplay between electronic and lattice dynamics; however, questions remain about the functional role of exciton-phonon interactions. Here we establish the robust polaronic nature of the excitons in these materials at room temperature by combining ultrafast spectroscopy and electronic structure calculations. We show that polaronic distortion is associated with low-frequency (30-60 cm-1) lead iodide octahedral lattice motions. More importantly, we discover how targeted ligand modification of this two-dimensional perovskite structure manipulates exciton-phonon coupling, exciton polaron population and carrier cooling. At high excitation density, stronger exciton-phonon coupling increases the hot-carrier lifetime, forming a hot-phonon bottleneck. Our study provides detailed insight into the exciton-phonon coupling and its role in carrier cooling in two-dimensional perovskites relevant for developing emerging hybrid semiconductor materials with tailored properties.

Manipulation of hot-carrier cooling dynamics in CsPbBr3 quantum dots via site-selective ligand engineering

Prolonging the lifetime of photoinduced hot carriers in lead-halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) is highly desirable because it can help improve the photovoltaic conversion efficiency. Ligand engineering has recently become a promising strategy to achieve this; nevertheless, mechanistic studies in this field remain limited. Herein, we propose a new scenario of ligand engineering featuring Pb2+/Br- site-selective capping on the surface of CsPbBr3 QDs. Through joint observations of temperature-dependent photoluminescence, ultrafast transient absorption, and Raman spectroscopy of the two contrasting model systems of CsPbBr3 QDs (i.e., capping with organic ligand only vs hybrid organic/inorganic ligands), we reveal that the phononic regulation of Pb-Br stretching at the Br-site (relative to Pb-site) leads to a larger suppression of charge-phonon coupling due to a stronger polaronic screening effect, thereby more effectively retarding the hot-carrier cooling process. This work opens a new route for the manipulation of hot-carrier cooling dynamics in perovskite systems via site-selective ligand engineering.

Small to Large Polaron Behavior Induced by Controlled Interactions in Perovskite Quantum Dot Solids

The polaron is an essential photoexcitation that governs the unique optoelectronic properties of organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites, and it has been subject to extensive spectroscopic and theoretical investigation over the past decade. A crucial but underexplored question is how the nature of the photogenerated polarons is impacted by the microscopic perovskite structure and what functional properties this affects. To tackle this question, we chemically tuned the interactions between perovskite quantum dots (QDs) to rationally manipulate the polaron properties. Through a suite of time-resolved spectroscopies, we find that inter-QD interactions open an excited-state channel to form large polaron species, which exhibit enhanced spatial diffusion, slower hot polaron cooling, and a longer intrinsic lifetime. At the same time, polaronic excitons are formed in competition via localized band-edge states, exhibiting strong photoluminescence but are limited by shorter intrinsic lifetimes. This control of polaron type and function through tunable inter-QD interactions not only provides design principles for QD-based materials but also experimentally disentangles polaronic species in hybrid perovskite materials.

Coupling to octahedral tilts in halide perovskite nanocrystals induces phonon-mediated attractive interactions between excitons

Understanding the origin of electron-phonon coupling in lead halide perovskites is key to interpreting and leveraging their optical and electronic properties. Here we show that photoexcitation drives a reduction of the lead-halide-lead bond angles, a result of deformation potential coupling to low-energy optical phonons. We accomplish this by performing femtosecond-resolved, optical-pump-electron-diffraction-probe measurements to quantify the lattice reorganization occurring as a result of photoexcitation in nanocrystals of FAPbBr3. Our results indicate a stronger coupling in FAPbBr3 than CsPbBr3. We attribute the enhanced coupling in FAPbBr3 to its disordered crystal structure, which persists down to cryogenic temperatures. We find the reorganizations induced by each exciton in a multi-excitonic state constructively interfere, giving rise to a coupling strength that scales quadratically with the exciton number. This superlinear scaling induces phonon-mediated attractive interactions between excitations in lead halide perovskites.

Solution phase high repetition rate laser pump x-ray probe picosecond hard x-ray spectroscopy at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource

We present a dedicated end-station for solution phase high repetition rate (MHz) picosecond hard x-ray spectroscopy at beamline 15-2 of the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource. A high-power ultrafast ytterbium-doped fiber laser is used to photoexcite the samples at a repetition rate of 640 kHz, while the data acquisition operates at the 1.28 MHz repetition rate of the storage ring recording data in an alternating on-off mode. The time-resolved x-ray measurements are enabled via gating the x-ray detectors with the 20 mA/70 ps camshaft bunch of SPEAR3, a mode available during the routine operations of the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource. As a benchmark study, aiming to demonstrate the advantageous capabilities of this end-station, we have conducted picosecond Fe K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy on aqueous [FeII(phen)3]2+, a prototypical spin crossover complex that undergoes light-induced excited spin state trapping forming an electronic excited state with a 0.6-0.7 ns lifetime. In addition, we report transient Fe Kβ main line and valence-to-core x-ray emission spectra, showing a unique detection sensitivity and an excellent agreement with model spectra and density functional theory calculations, respectively. Notably, the achieved signal-to-noise ratio, the overall performance, and the routine availability of the developed end-station have enabled a systematic time-resolved science program using the monochromatic beam at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource.

Nonlinear terahertz control of the lead halide perovskite lattice

Lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have emerged as an excellent class of semiconductors for next-generation solar cells and optoelectronic devices. Tailoring physical properties by fine-tuning the lattice structures has been explored in these materials by chemical composition or morphology. Nevertheless, its dynamic counterpart, phonon-driven ultrafast material control, as contemporarily harnessed for oxide perovskites, has not yet been established. Here, we use intense THz electric fields to obtain direct lattice control via nonlinear excitation of coherent octahedral twist modes in hybrid CH₃NH₃PbBr₃ and all-inorganic CsPbBr₃ perovskites. These Raman-active phonons at 0.9 to 1.3 THz are found to govern the ultrafast THz-induced Kerr effect in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase and thus dominate the phonon-modulated polarizability with potential implications for dynamic charge carrier screening beyond the Fröhlich polaron. Our work opens the door to selective control of LHP's vibrational degrees of freedom governing phase transitions and dynamic disorder.

Light-Induced Transient Lattice Dynamics and Metastable Phase Transition in CH3NH3PbI3 Nanocrystals

Methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI₃) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) offer desirable optoelectronic properties with prospective utility in photovoltaics, lasers, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Structural rearrangements of MAPbI₃ in response to photoexcitation, such as lattice distortions and phase transitions, are of particular interest, as these engender long carrier lifetime and bolster carrier diffusion. Here, we use variable temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD) and synchrotron-based transient X-ray diffraction (TRXRD) to investigate lattice response following ultrafast optical excitation. MAPbI₃ NCs are found to slowly undergo a phase transition from the tetragonal to a pseudocubic phase over the course of 1 ns under 0.02-4.18 mJ/cm² fluence photoexcitation, with apparent nonthermal lattice distortions attributed to polaron formation. Lattice recovery exceeds time scales expected for both carrier recombination and thermal dissipation, indicating meta-stability likely due to the proximal phase transition, with symmetry-breaking along equatorial and axial directions. These findings are relevant for fundamental understanding and applications of structure-function properties.

Electron Trapping Prolongs the Lifetime of Charge-Separated States in 2D Perovskite Nanoplatelet-Hole Acceptor Complexes

Two-dimensional (2D) lead halide perovskite nanoplatelets (NPLs) are promising materials for blue light emission because of the strong quantum confinement in the 2D morphology. However, the identity of carrier traps and the trap influence on charge transfer in these NPLs remain unclear. Herein, transient absorption studies revealed two types of electron traps in 3 monolayer lead bromide perovskite NPLs with trapping lifetime of 9.0 ± 0.6 and 516 ± 59 ps, respectively, while no hole traps were observed. Systematic charge transfer experiments show that electron traps have negligible influence on ultrafast electron transfer or hole transfer but extend the half-lifetime of the charge-separated state from 2.1 ± 0.1 to 68 ± 3 ns after hole transfer, which is explained by the reduced electron-hole overlap. This work contributes to the understanding of the fundamental carrier dynamics in 2D perovskite NPLs and offers guidelines for boosting their performance in optoelectronics and photocatalysis.

Many-Body Correlations and Exciton Complexes in CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots

All-inorganic lead-halide perovskite (LHP) (CsPbX₃ , X = Cl, Br, I) quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as a competitive platform for classical light-emitting devices (in the weak light-matter interaction regime, e.g., LEDs and laser), as well as for devices exploiting strong light-matter interaction at room temperature. Many-body interactions and quantum correlations among photogenerated exciton complexes play an essential role, for example, by determining the laser threshold, the overall brightness of LEDs, and the single-photon purity in quantum light sources. Here, by combining cryogenic single-QD photoluminescence spectroscopy with configuration-interaction (CI) calculations, the size-dependent trion and biexciton binding energies are addressed. Trion binding energies increase from 7 to 17 meV for QD sizes decreasing from 30 to 9 nm, while the biexciton binding energies increase from 15 to 30 meV, respectively. CI calculations quantitatively corroborate the experimental results and suggest that the effective dielectric constant for biexcitons slightly deviates from the one of the single excitons, potentially as a result of coupling to the lattice in the multiexciton regime. The findings here provide a deep insight into the multiexciton properties in all-inorganic LHP QDs, essential for classical and quantum optoelectronic devices.

Direct Observation of Ultrafast Lattice Distortions during Exciton-Polaron Formation in Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

The microscopic origin of slow hot-carrier cooling in lead halide perovskites remains debated and has direct implications for applications. Slow hot-carrier cooling of several picoseconds has been attributed to either polaron formation or a hot-phonon bottleneck effect at high excited carrier densities (>10¹⁸ cm^-3). These effects cannot be unambiguously disentangled with optical experiments alone. However, they can be distinguished by direct observations of ultrafast lattice dynamics, as these effects are expected to create qualitatively distinct fingerprints. To this end, we employ femtosecond electron diffraction and directly measure the sub-picosecond lattice dynamics of weakly confined CsPbBr₃ nanocrystals following above-gap photoexcitation. While we do not observe signatures of a hot-phonon bottleneck lasting several picoseconds, the data reveal a light-induced structural distortion appearing on a time scale varying between 380 and 1200 fs depending on the excitation fluence. We attribute these dynamics to the effect of exciton-polarons on the lattice and the slower dynamics at high fluences to slower sub-picosecond hot-carrier cooling, which slows down the establishment of the exciton-polaron population. Further analysis and simulations show that the distortion is consistent with motions of the [PbBr₃]^- octahedral ionic cage, and closest agreement with the data is obtained for Pb-Br bond lengthening. Our work demonstrates how direct studies of lattice dynamics on the sub-picosecond time scale can discriminate between competing scenarios proposed in the literature to explain the origin of slow hot-carrier cooling in lead halide perovskites.

One-Dimensional Highly-Confined CsPbBr3 Nanorods with Enhanced Stability: Synthesis and Spectroscopy

One-dimensional (1D) colloidal lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have potential as quantum emitters. Their study, however, has been hampered by their previous instability, leaving a gap in our understanding of structure-property relationships in colloidal LHPs with anisotropic shapes. Here, we synthesize stable, highly-confined 1D CsPbBr₃ nanorods (NRs) and demonstrate their structural details and photoluminescence (PL) properties at both the ensemble and single particle levels. Using amino-terminated copolymers, we are able to stabilize and characterize 1D CsPbBr₃ NRs utilizing transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small angle scattering (SAS). Scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals that these NRs possess structural defects, including twists and inhomogeneity. Solution-phase photon correlation spectroscopy shows low biexciton-to-exciton quantum yield ratios (QY_BX/QY_X) and broad spectral line widths dominated by homogeneous broadening.

Ab Initio Prediction of Excited-State and Polaron Effects in Transient XUV Measurements of α-Fe2O3

Transient X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectroscopies have become invaluable tools for studying photoexcited dynamics due to their sensitivity to carrier occupations and local chemical or structural changes. One of the most studied materials using transient XUV spectroscopy is α-Fe₂O₃ because of its rich photoexcited dynamics, including small polaron formation. The interpretation of carrier and polaron effects in α-Fe₂O₃ is currently carried out using a semi-empirical method that is not transferrable to most materials. Here, an ab initio, Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) approach is developed that can incorporate photoexcited-state effects into arbitrary material systems. The accuracy of this approach is proven by calculating the XUV absorption spectra for the ground, photoexcited, and polaron states of α-Fe₂O₃. Furthermore, the theoretical approach allows for the projection of the core-valence excitons and different components of the X-ray transition Hamiltonian onto the band structure, providing new insights into old measurements. From this information, a physical intuition about the origins and nature of the transient XUV spectra can be built. A route to extracting electron and hole energies is even shown possible for highly angular momentum split XUV peaks. This method is easily generalized to K, L, M, and N edges to provide a general approach for analyzing transient X-ray absorption or reflection data.

Direct and real-time observation of hole transport dynamics in anatase TiO2 using X-ray free-electron laser

Carrier dynamics affects photocatalytic systems, but direct and real-time observations in an element-specific and energy-level-specific manner are challenging. In this study, we demonstrate that the dynamics of photo-generated holes in metal oxides can be directly probed by using femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy at an X-ray free-electron laser. We identify the energy level and life time of holes with a long life time (230 pico-seconds) in nano-crystal materials. We also observe that trapped holes show an energy distribution in the bandgap region with a formation time of 0.3 pico-seconds and a decay time of 8.0 pico-seconds at room temperature. We corroborate the dynamics of the electrons by using X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the metal L-edges in a consistent explanation with that of the holes.

Direct and real-time observation of the excess holes in an element-specific and energylevel-specific manner is a challenging task. Here the authors present a complete hole dynamics of photo-excited anatase TiO₂ with 100 femto-second resolution.

Atomic-Level Description of Thermal Fluctuations in Inorganic Lead Halide Perovskites

A comprehensive microscopic description of thermally induced distortions in lead halide perovskites is crucial for their realistic applications, yet still unclear. Here, we quantify the effects of thermal activation in CsPbBr₃ nanocrystals across length scales with atomic-level precision, and we provide a framework for the description of phase transitions therein, beyond the simplistic picture of unit-cell symmetry increase upon heating. The temperature increase significantly enhances the short-range structural distortions of the lead halide framework as a consequence of the phonon anharmonicity, which causes the excess free energy surface to change as a function of temperature. As a result, phase transitions can be rationalized via the soft-mode model, which also describes displacive thermal phase transitions in oxide perovskites. Our findings allow to reconcile temperature-dependent modifications of physical properties, such as changes in the optical band gap, that are incompatible with the perovskite time- and space-average structures.

Quantized Exciton Motion and Fine Energy-Level Structure of a Single Perovskite Nanowire

The quantum-confinement effect profoundly influences the exciton energy-level structures and recombination dynamics of semiconductor nanostructures but remains largely unexplored in traditional one-dimensional nanowires mainly due to their poor optical qualities. Here, we show that in defect-tolerant perovskite material of highly luminescent CsPbBr₃ nanowires, the exciton's center-of-mass motion perpendicular to the axial direction is severely confined. This is reflected in the two sets of photoluminescence spectra emitted from a single CsPbBr₃ nanowire, each of which consists of doublet peaks with linear polarizations perpendicular and parallel to the axial direction. Moreover, different exciton states can be mixed by the Rashba spin-orbit coupling effect, resulting in two single photoluminescence peaks with linear polarizations both along the nanowire axis. The above findings mark the emergence of an ideal platform for the exploration of intrinsic one-dimensional exciton photophysics and optoelectronics, thus bridging the long-missing research gap between the well-studied two- and zero-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures.

Nonlocal Screening Dictates the Radiative Lifetimes of Excitations in Lead Halide Perovskites

We use path integral molecular dynamics simulations and theory to elucidate the interactions between charge carriers, as mediated by a lead halide perovskite lattice. We find that the charge-lattice coupling of MAPbI₃ results in a repulsive interaction between electrons and holes at intermediate distances. The effective interaction is understood using a Gaussian field theory, whereby the underlying soft, polar lattice contributes a nonlocal screening between quasiparticles. Path integral calculations of this nonlocal screening model are used to rationalize the small exciton binding energy and low radiative recombination rate observed experimentally and are compared to traditional Wannier-Mott and Fröhlich models, which fail to do so. These results clarify the origin of the high power conversion efficiencies in lead halide perovskites. Emergent repulsive electron-hole interactions provide a design principle for optimizing soft, polar semiconductors.

Extreme Ultraviolet Reflection-Absorption Spectroscopy: Probing Dynamics at Surfaces from a Molecular Perspective

Extreme ultraviolet light sources based on high harmonic generation are enabling the development of novel spectroscopic methods to help advance the frontiers of ultrafast science and technology. In this Account, we discuss the development of extreme ultraviolet reflection-absorption (XUV-RA) spectroscopy at near grazing incident reflection geometry and highlight recent applications of this method to study ultrafast electron dynamics at surfaces. Measuring core-to-valence transitions with broadband, femtosecond pulses of XUV light extends the benefits of X-ray absorption spectroscopy to a laboratory tabletop by providing a chemical fingerprint of materials, including the ability to resolve individual elements with sensitivity to oxidation state, spin state, carrier polarity, and coordination geometry. Combining this chemical state sensitivity with femtosecond time resolution provides new insight into the material properties that govern charge carrier dynamics in complex materials. It is well-known that surface dynamics differ significantly from equivalent processes in bulk materials and that charge separation, trapping, transport, and recombination occurring uniquely at surfaces govern the efficiency of numerous technologically relevant processes spanning photocatalysis, photovoltaics, and information storage and processing. Importantly, XUV-RA spectroscopy at near grazing angle is also surface sensitive with a probe depth of ∼3 nm, providing a new window into electronic and structural dynamics at surfaces and interfaces. Here we highlight the unique capabilities and recent applications of XUV-RA spectroscopy to study photoinduced surface dynamics in metal oxide semiconductors, including photocatalytic oxides (Fe₂O₃, Co₃O₄ NiO, and CuFeO₂) as well as photoswitchable magnetic oxide (CoFe₂O₄). We first compare the ultrafast electron self-trapping rates via small polaron formation at the surface and bulk of Fe₂O₃ where we note that the energetics and kinetics of this process differ significantly at the surface. Additionally, we demonstrate the ability to systematically tune this kinetics by molecular functionalization, thereby providing a route to control carrier transport at surfaces. We also measure the spectral signatures of charge transfer excitons with site specific localization of both electrons and holes in a series of transition metal oxide semiconductors (Fe₂O₃, NiO, Co₃O₄). The presence of valence band holes probed at the oxygen L₁-edge confirms a direct relationship between the metal-oxygen bond covalency and water oxidation efficiency. For a mixed metal oxide CuFeO₂ in the layered delafossite structure, XUV-RA reveals that the sub-picosecond hole thermalization from O 2p to Cu 3d states of CuFeO₂ leads to the spatial separation of electrons and holes, resulting in exceptional photocatalytic performance for H₂ evolution and CO₂ reduction of this material. Finally, we provide an example to show the ability of XUV-RA to probe spin state specific dynamics in a photoswitchable ferrimagnet, cobalt ferrite (CoFe₂O₄). This study provides a detailed understating of ultrafast spin switching in a complex magnetic material with site-specific resolution. In summary, the applications of XUV-RA spectroscopy demonstrated here illustrate the current abilities and future promise of this method to extend molecule-level understanding from well-defined photochemical complexes to complex materials so that charge and spin dynamics at surfaces can be tuned with the precision of molecular photochemistry.

Polaronic Signatures in Doped and Undoped Cesium Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals through a Photoinduced Raman Mode

Lead halide perovskites (LHPs) are promising candidates for photovoltaic applications as they exhibit large carrier diffusion lengths and long carrier lifetimes among many other interesting properties. One of the widely accepted mechanisms for these properties is polaron formation, which is mainly driven by octahedral distortions of the inorganic framework. Since structure modifications of the framework largely affect associated distortions, we investigated Mn-doped and undoped CsPbX₃ (where X = Cl, Br, Cl/Br) using a local probe via micro-Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations for polaron formation. Our results highlight a new vibrational lattice mode at 132 cm^-1 due to polaronic distortion upon photoinduction. From the DFT studies, we have shown that the polaronic states are dominated by the B-site cation in the perovskite structure, but it is the strong covalent overlap of the halide which determines its stability. This elucidation to map polaronic signatures with excellent spatial resolution using traditional Raman spectroscopy can be used as a simple tool to understand the structural changes and their impacted electronic properties and thus design superior devices using its in situ applications.

Charge Carrier Screening in Photoexcited Epitaxial Semiconductor Nanorods Revealed by Transient X-ray Absorption Linear Dichroism

Understanding the electronic structure and dynamics of semiconducting nanomaterials at the atomic level is crucial for the realization and optimization of devices in solar energy, catalysis, and optoelectronic applications. We report here on the use of ultrafast X-ray linear dichroism spectroscopy to monitor the carrier dynamics in epitaxial ZnO nanorods after band gap photoexcitation. By rigorously subtracting out thermal contributions and conducting ab initio calculations, we reveal an overall depletion of absorption cross sections in the transient X-ray spectra caused by photogenerated charge carriers screening the core-hole potential of the X-ray absorbing atom. At low laser excitation densities, we observe phase-space filling by excited electrons and holes separately. These results pave the way for carrier- and element-specific probing of charge transfer dynamics across heterostructured interfaces with ultrafast table-top and fourth-generation X-ray sources.

Multipulse Terahertz Spectroscopy Unveils Hot Polaron Photoconductivity Dynamics in Metal-Halide Perovskites

Hot carriers in metal-halide perovskites (MHPs) present a foundation for understanding carrier-phonon coupling in the materials as well as the prospective development of high-performance hot carrier photovoltaics. While the carrier population dynamics during cooling have been scrutinized, the evolution of the hot carrier properties, namely mobility, remains largely unexplored. Here we introduce novel ultrafast visible pump-infrared push-terahertz probe spectroscopy to monitor the real-time conductivity dynamics of cooling carriers in methylammonium lead iodide. We find a decrease in mobility upon optically re-exciting the carriers, as expected for band transport. Surprisingly, the conductivity recovery is incommensurate with the hot carrier population dynamics measured by infrared probe and exhibits a negligible dependence on the hot carrier density. Our results reveal the importance of localized lattice heating toward the hot carrier mobility. This collective polaron-lattice phenomenon may contribute to the unusual photophysics of MHPs and should be accounted for in hot carrier devices.
