Abstract
Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is widely proposed as a key factor in tuning catalytic performances. Herein, the classical SMSI between Au nanoparticles (NPs) and BiVO4 (BVO) supports (Au/BVO-SMSI) is discovered and used innovatively for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Owing to the SMSI, the electrons transfer from V4+ to Au NPs, leading to the formation of electron-rich Au species (Auδ-) and strong electronic interaction (i.e., Auδ--Ov-V4+), which readily contributes to extract photogenerated holes and promote charge separation. Benefitted from the SMSI effect, the as-prepared Au/BVO-SMSI photoanode exhibits a superior photocurrent density of 6.25 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode after the deposition of FeOOH/NiOOH cocatalysts. This work provides a pioneering view for extending SMSI effect to bimetal oxide supports for PEC water splitting, and guides the interfacial electronic and geometric structure modulation of photoanodes consisting of metal NPs and reducible oxides for improved solar energy conversion efficiency.

Abstract
Photo(electro)catalysts use sunlight to drive chemical reactions such as water splitting. A major factor limiting photocatalyst development is physicochemical heterogeneity which leads to spatially dependent reactivity. To link structure and function in such systems, simultaneous probing of the electrochemical environment at microscopic length scales and a broad range of timescales (ns to s) is required. Here, we address this challenge by developing and applying in-situ (optical) microscopies to map and correlate local electrochemical activity, with hole lifetimes, oxygen vacancy concentrations and photoelectrode crystal structure. Using this multi-modal approach, we study prototypical hematite (α-Fe2O3) photoelectrodes. We demonstrate that regions of α-Fe2O3, adjacent to microstructural cracks have a better photoelectrochemical response and reduced back electron recombination due to an optimal oxygen vacancy concentration, with the film thickness and extended light exposure also influencing local activity. Our work highlights the importance of microscopic mapping to understand activity, in even seemingly homogeneous photoelectrodes.

Abstract
This study reports a comparison of the kinetics of electrochemical (EC) versus photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation on bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) photoanodes. Plots of current density versus surface hole density, determined from operando optical absorption analyses under EC and PEC conditions, are found to be indistinguishable. We thus conclude that EC water oxidation is driven by the Zener effect tunneling electrons from the valence to conduction band under strong bias, with the kinetics of both EC and PEC water oxidation being determined by the density of accumulated surface valence band holes. We further demonstrate that our combined optical absorption/current density analyses enable an operando quantification of the BiVO4 photovoltage as a function of light intensity.

Abstract
The vast compositional space available in high-entropy oxide semiconductors offers unique opportunities for electronic band structure engineering in an unprecedented large room. In this work, with wide band gap semiconductor lithium niobate (LiNbO3) as a model system, we show that the substitutional addition of high-entropy metal cation mixtures within the Nb sublattice can lead to the formation of a single-phase solid solution featuring a substantially narrowed band gap and intense broadband visible light absorption. The resulting high-entropy LiNbO3 [denoted as Li(HE)O3] crystallizes as well-faceted nanocubes; atomic-resolution imaging and elemental mapping via transmission electron microscopy unveil a distinct local chemical complexity and lattice distortion, characteristics of high-entropy stabilized solid solution phases. Because of the presence of high-entropy stabilized Co2+ dopants that serve as active catalytic sites, Li(HE)O3 nanocubes can accomplish the visible light-driven photocatalytic water splitting in an aqueous solution containing methanol as a sacrificial electron donor without the need of any additional co-catalysts.

Abstract
Pattern-illumination time-resolved phase microscopy (PI-PM) is a technique used to study the microscopic charge carrier dynamics in photocatalytic and photovoltaic materials. The method involves illuminating a sample with a pump light pattern, which generates charge carriers and they decay subsequently due to trapping, recombination, and transfer processes. The distribution of photo-excited charge carriers is observed through refractive index changes using phase-contrast imaging. In the PI-PM method, the sensitivity of the refractive index change is enhanced by adjusting the focus position, the method takes advantage of photo-excited charge carriers to observe non-radiative processes, such as charge diffusion, trapping in defect/surface states, and interfacial charge transfer of photocatalytic and photovoltaic reactions. The quality of the image sequence is recovered using various informatics calculations. Categorizing and mapping different types of charge carriers based on their response profiles using clustering analysis provides spatial information on charge carrier types and the identification of local sites for efficient and inefficient photo-induced reactions, providing valuable information for the design and optimization of photocatalytic materials such as the cocatalyst effect.

Abstract
The functions of electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices rely on the dynamic junction between a solid and a fluid: the electrochemical interface (EI). Many experimental techniques have been developed to probe the EI, but they provide only a partial picture. Building a full mechanistic understanding requires combining multiple probes, either successively or simultaneously. However, such combinations lead to important technical and theoretical challenges. In this Review, we focus on complementary optoelectronic probes and modelling to address the EI across different timescales and spatial scales - including mapping surface reconstruction, reactants and reaction modulators during operation. We discuss how combining these probes can facilitate a predictive design of the EI when closely integrated with theory.

Abstract
Environmental problems, including the increasingly polluted water and the energy crisis, have led to a need to propose novel strategies/methodologies to contribute to sustainable progress and enhance human well-being. For these goals, heterogeneous semiconducting-based photocatalysis is introduced as a green, eco-friendly, cost-effective, and effective strategy. The introduction of anion vacancies in semiconductors has been well-known as an effective strategy for considerably enhancing the photocatalytic activity of such photocatalytic systems, giving them the advantages of promoting light harvesting, facilitating photogenerated electron-hole pair separation, optimizing the electronic structure, and enhancing the yield of reactive radicals. This Review will introduce the effects of anion vacancy-dominated photodegradation systems. Then, their mechanism will illustrate how an anion vacancy changes the photodegradation pathway to enhance the degradation efficiency toward pollutants and the overall photocatalytic performance. Specifically, the vacancy defect types and the methods of tailoring vacancies will be briefly illustrated, and this part of the Review will focus on the oxygen vacancy (OV) and its recent advances. The challenges and development issues for engineered vacancy defects in photocatalysts will also be discussed for practical applications and to provide a promising research direction. Finally, some prospects for this emerging field will be proposed and suggested. All permission numbers for adopted figures from the literature are summarized in a separate file for the Editor.

Abstract
The intra-gap states that are introduced into a semiconducting photocatalyst via dopants and other defects have significant implications on the transport dynamics of photoexcited electrons and holes during an aqueous light-driven reaction. In this work, mechanistic understanding of Rh-doped rutile, a promising photocatalyst for hydrogen production from water, is gained by systematic assessment combining intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy with sub-gap excitations and alternating-current photocurrent spectroscopy. These operando techniques not only help in discovering a new electronic transport path in Rh-rutile via surface Rh4+ species and elucidating complex interaction between electrolyte molecules and semiconductors, but also underscore the potential of utilizing multiple sub-gap excitations synergistically. This combination offers a powerful tool for acquiring insight into photo-physical and photo-chemical behaviors of photo(electro)catalysts with intra-gap states.

Abstract
Transition metal oxides (TMOs) were one of the first photocatalysts used to produce hydrogen from water using solar energy. Despite the emergence of many other genres of photocatalysts over the years, TMO photocatalysts remain dominant due to their easy synthesis and unique physicochemical properties. Various strategies have been developed to enhance the photocatalytic activity of TMOs, but the solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency of TMO photocatalysts is still very low (<2 %), which is far below the targeted STH of 10 % for commercial viability. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of several widely used strategies, including oxygen defects control, doping, establishing interfacial junctions, and phase-facet-morphology engineering, that have been adopted to improve TMO photocatalysts. By critically evaluating these strategies and providing a roadmap for future research directions, this article serves as a valuable resource for researchers, students, and professionals seeking to develop efficient energy materials for green energy solutions.

Abstract
Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation to ammonia and nitrates holds great promise as a sustainable route powered by solar energy and fed with renewable energy resources (N2 and H2O). This technology is currently under deep investigation to overcome the limited efficiency of the process. The rational design of efficient and robust photocatalysts is crucial to boost the photocatalytic performance. Widely used bulk materials generally suffer from charge recombination due to poor interfacial charge transfer and difficult surface diffusion. To overcome this limitation, this work explores the use of aqueous-dispersed colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) with precise morphological control, better carrier mobility, and stronger redox ability. Here, the TiO2 framework has been modified via aliovalent molybdenum doping, and resulting Mo-TiO2 NCs have been functionalized with charged terminating hydroxyl groups (OH-) for the simultaneous production of ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates via photocatalytic nitrogen reduction in water, which has not been previously found in the literature. Our results demonstrate the positive effect of Mo-doping and nanostructuration on the overall N2 fixation performance. Ammonia production rates are found to be dependent on the Mo-doping loading. 5Mo-TiO2 delivers the highest NH4+ yield rate (ca. 105.3 μmol g-1 L-1 h-1) with an outstanding 90% selectivity, which is almost four times higher than that obtained over bare TiO2. The wide range of advance characterization techniques used in this work reveals that Mo-doping enhances charge-transfer processes and carriers lifetime as a consequence of the creation of new intra band gap states in Mo-doped TiO2 NCs.

Abstract
WO3/BiVO4 heterojunction photoanodes can be efficiently employed in photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells for the conversion of water into molecular oxygen, the kinetic bottleneck of water splitting. Composite WO3/BiVO4 photoelectrodes possessing a nanoflake-like morphology have been synthesized through a multistep process and their PEC performance was investigated in comparison to that of WO3/BiVO4 photoelectrodes displaying a planar surface morphology and similar absorption properties and thickness. PEC tests, also in the presence of a sacrificial hole scavenger, electrochemical impedance analysis under simulated solar irradiation, and incident photon to current efficiency measurements highlighted that charge transport and charge recombination issues affecting the performance of the planar composite can be successfully overcome by nanostructuring the WO3 underlayer in nanoflake-like WO3/BiVO4 heterojunction electrodes.

Abstract
Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into fuels provides a prospective tactic for regulating the global carbon balance utilizing renewable solar energy. However, CO2 molecules are difficult to activate and reduce due to the thermodynamic stability and chemical inertness. In this work, we develop a novel strategy to promote the adsorption and activation of CO2 molecules via the rapid energy exchange between the photoinduced Br vacancies and CO2 molecules. Combining in situ continuous wave-electron paramagnetic resonance (cw-EPR) and pulsed EPR technologies, we observe that the spin-spin relaxation time (T2) of BiOBr is decreased by 198 ns during the CO2 photoreduction reaction, which is further confirmed by the broadened EPR linewidth. This result reveals that there is an energy exchange interaction between in situ formed Br vacancies and CO2 molecules, which promotes the formation of high-energy CO2 molecules to facilitate the subsequent reduction reaction. In addition, theoretical calculations indicate that the bended CO2 adsorption configuration on the surface of BiOBr with Br vacancies caused the decrease of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the CO2 molecule, which makes it easier for CO2 molecules to acquire electrons and get activated. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy further shows that the activated CO2 molecules are favorably converted to key intermediates of COOH*, resulting in a CO generation rate of 9.1 μmol g-1 h-1 and a selectivity of 100%. This study elucidates the underlying mechanism of CO2 activation at active sites and deepens the understanding of CO2 photoreduction reaction.

Tuning Oxygen Vacancies in Oxides by Configurational Entropy. ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES 2023; 15:45774-45789. Abstract
Tuning surface oxygen vacancies is important for oxide catalysts. Doping elements with different chemical valence states or different atomic radii into host oxides is a common method to create oxygen vacancies. However, the concentration of oxygen vacancies in oxide catalysts is still limited to the amount of foreign dopants that can be tolerated (generally less than 10% atoms). Herein, a principle of engineering the configurational entropy to tune oxygen vacancies was proposed. First, the positive relationship between the configuration entropy and the formation energy of oxygen vacancies (Eov) in 16 model oxides was estimated by a DFT calculation. To verify this, single binary oxides and high-entropy quinary oxides (HEOs) were prepared. Indeed, the concentration of oxygen vacancies in HEOs (Oβ/α = 3.66) was higher compared to those of single or binary oxides (Oβ/α = 0.22-0.75) by O1s XPS, O2-TPD, and EPR. Interestingly, the reduction temperatures of transition metal ions in HEOs were generally lower than that in single-metal oxides by H2-TPR. The lower Eov of HEOs may contribute to this feature, which was confirmed by in situ XPS and in situ XRD. Moreover, with catalytic CO/C3H6 oxidation as a model, the high-entropy (MnCuCo3NiFe)xOy catalyst showed higher catalytic activity than single and binary oxides, which experimentally verified the hypothesis of the DFT calculation. This work may inspire more oxide catalysts with preferred oxygen vacancies.

Abstract
Piezocatalytic therapy, which generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) under mechanical force, has garnered extensive attention for its use in cancer therapy owing to its deep tissue penetration depth and less O2 -dependence. However, the piezocatalytic therapeutic efficiency is limited owing to the poor piezoresponse, low separation of electron-hole pairs, and complicated tumor microenvironment (TME). Herein, a biodegradable, porous Mn-doped ZnO (Mn-ZnO) nanocluster with enhanced piezoelectric effect is constructed via doping engineering. Mn-doping not only induces lattice distortion to increase polarization but also creates rich oxygen vacancies (OV ) for suppressing the recombination of electron-hole pairs, leading to high-efficiency generation of ROS under ultrasound irradiation. Moreover, Mn-doped ZnO shows TME-responsive multienzyme-mimicking activity and glutathione (GSH) depletion ability owing to the mixed valence of Mn (II/III), further aggravating oxidative stress. Density functional theory calculations show that Mn-doping can improve the piezocatalytic performance and enzyme activity of Mn-ZnO due to the presence of OV . Benefiting from the boosting of ROS generation and GSH depletion ability, Mn-ZnO can significantly accelerate the accumulation of lipid peroxide and inactivate glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) to induce ferroptosis. The work may provide new guidance for exploring novel piezoelectric sonosensitizers for tumor therapy.

Abstract
Photoinduced charge separation and surface reactions are essential for ensuring high quantum efficiency of the photochemical and photophysical processes. BiVO4-based heterojunctions are promising materials for high-performance photocatalysts; however, their photocatalytic performance is significantly lower than the theoretical limit due to the sluggish water oxidation dynamics and rapid recombination of charge carriers on the catalyst surface. To address these issues, oxygen vacancies (OVs) are introduced to a rationally designed BiVO4-based heterojunction using built-in potential and gradient OVs to promote the separation of carriers and increase the photocatalytic activity. The heterojunctions with OVs exhibit a 2-fold increase in the photocatalytic activity for phenol degradation compared with that of pristine BiVO4. Additionally, density functional theory is applied to elucidate the synergistic mechanism of light absorption and charge separation in BiOCl/BiVO4 p-n heterojunction photocatalysts containing vacancies. The obtained results demonstrate a synergistic effect of vacancies and the built-in potential, providing a pathway for defect engineering in photocatalytic processes.

Abstract
In photoelectrochemical cells (PECs) the photon-to-current conversion efficiency is often governed by carrier transport. Most metal oxides used in PECs exhibit thermally activated transport due to charge localization via the formation of polarons or the interaction with defects. This impacts catalysis by restricting the charge accumulation and extraction. To overcome this transport bottleneck nanostructuring, selective doping and photothermal treatments have been employed. Here we demonstrate an alternative approach capable of directly activating localized carriers in bismuth vanadate (BiVO4). We show that IR photons can optically excite localized charges, modulate their kinetics, and enhance the PEC current. Moreover, we track carriers bound to oxygen vacancies and expose their ∼10 ns charge localization, followed by ∼60 μs transport-assisted trapping. Critically, we demonstrate that localization is strongly dependent on the electric field within the device. While optical modulation has still a limited impact on overall PEC performance, we argue it offers a path to control devices on demand and uncover defect-related photophysics.

Abstract
Solar-driven CO2 reduction by water with a Z-scheme heterojunction affords an avenue to access energy storage and to alleviate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, yet the separation of charge carriers and the integrative regulation of water oxidation and CO2 activation sites remain challenging. Here, a BiVO4 /g-C3 N4 (BVO/CN) Z-scheme heterojunction as such a prototype is constructed by spatially separated dual sites with CoOx clusters and imidazolium ionic liquids (IL) toward CO2 photoreduction. The optimized CoOx -BVO/CN-IL delivers an ≈80-fold CO production rate without H2 evolution compared with urea-C3 N4 counterpart, together with nearly stoichiometric O2 gas produced. Experimental results and DFT calculations unveil the cascade Z-scheme charge transfer and subsequently the prominent redox co-catalysis by CoOx and IL for holes-H2 O oxidation and electrons-CO2 reduction, respectively. Moreover, in situ µs-transient absorption spectra clearly show the function of each cocatalyst and quantitatively reveal that the resulting CoOx -BVO/CN-IL reaches up to the electron transfer efficiency of 36.4% for CO2 reduction, far beyond those for BVO/CN (4.0%) and urea-CN (0.8%), underlining an exceptional synergy of dual reaction sites engineering. This work provides deep insights and guidelines for the rational design of highly efficient Z-scheme heterojunctions with precise redox catalytic sites toward solar fuel production.

Abstract
Enhancing charge-carrier dynamics is imperative to achieve efficient photoelectrodes for practical photoelectrochemical devices. However, a convincing explanation and answer for the important question which has thus far been absent relates to the precise mechanism of charge-carrier generation by solar light in photoelectrodes. Herein, to exclude the interference of complex multi-components and nanostructuring, we fabricate bulky TiO2 photoanodes through physical vapor deposition. Integrating photoelectrochemical measurements and in situ characterizations, the photoinduced holes and electrons are transiently stored and promptly transported around the oxygen-bridge bonds and 5-coordinated Ti atoms to form polarons on the boundaries of TiO2 grains, respectively. Most importantly, we also find that compressive stress-induced internal magnetic field can drastically enhance the charge-carrier dynamics for the TiO2 photoanode, including directional separation and transport of charge carriers and an increase of surface polarons. As a result, bulky TiO2 photoanode with high compressive stress displays a high charge-separation efficiency and an excellent charge-injection efficiency, leading to 2 orders of magnitude higher photocurrent than that produced by a classic TiO2 photoanode. This work not only provides a fundamental understanding of the charge-carrier dynamics of the photoelectrodes but also provides a new paradigm for designing efficient photoelectrodes and controlling the dynamics of charge carriers.

Abstract
Photoelectrochemistry has the potential to play a crucial role in the storage of solar energy and the realisation of a circular economy. From a chemical viewpoint, achieving high conversion efficiencies requires subtle control of the catalyst surface and its interaction with the electrolyte. Traditionally, such control has been hard to achieve in the complex multinary oxides used in PEC devices and consequently the mechanisms by which surface exposed facets influence light-driven catalysts are poorly understood. Yet, this understanding is critical to further improve conversion yields and fine-tune reaction selectivities. Here, we review the impact that crystal facets and disorder have on photoelectrochemical reactivity. In particular, we discuss how the crystal orientation influences the energetics of the surface, the existence of defects and the transport of reactive charges, ultimately dictating the PEC activity. Moreover, we evaluate how facet stability dictates the tendency of the solid to undergo reconstructions during catalytic processes and highlight the experimental and computational challenges that must be overcome to characterise the role of the exposed facets and disorder in catalytic performance.

Abstract
Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is a promising photoanode material for solar-driven water splitting, and knowledge of the photocarrier dynamics in BiVO4 could offer guidance to propel the development of the photoanode performance. Herein, we uncovered the nature of various photogenerated transient species in BiVO4 and extracted their respective dynamics. We found spectral and dynamic evidence that the electrons in the conduction band collapsed into severely localized small electron polarons on a subpicosecond time scale, while the holes in the valence band remained delocalized and accounted for the photoconductivity. In the following tens to hundreds of picoseconds, the electron polaron captured the hole to form a self-trapped exciton via a bimolecular reaction mechanism, and in consequence, the hole was immobilized. Our finding suggests that exciton dissociation strategies should be taken into account in the design of the BiVO4-based water-splitting applications in order to enhance charge transport and suppress charge recombination.

Abstract
Metal oxides are promising for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting due to their robustness and low cost. However, poor charge carrier transport impedes their activity, particularly at low-bias voltage. Here we demonstrate the unusual effectiveness of phosphorus doping into bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) photoanode for efficient low-bias PEC water splitting. The resulting BiVO4 photoanode shows a separation efficiency of 80% and 99% at potentials as low as 0.6 and 1.0 VRHE, respectively. Theoretical simulation and experimental analysis collectively verify that the record performance originates from the unique phosphorus-doped BiVO4 configuration with concurrently mediated carrier density, trap states, and small polaron hopping. With NiFeOx cocatalyst, the BiVO4 photoanode achieves an applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 2.21% at 0.6 VRHE. The mechanistic understanding of the enhancement of BiVO4 properties provides key insights in trap state passivation and polaron hopping for most photoactive metal oxides.

Abstract
The water-splitting reaction using photocatalyst particles is a promising route for solar fuel production1-4. Photo-induced charge transfer from a photocatalyst to catalytic surface sites is key in ensuring photocatalytic efficiency5; however, it is challenging to understand this process, which spans a wide spatiotemporal range from nanometres to micrometres and from femtoseconds to seconds6-8. Although the steady-state charge distribution on single photocatalyst particles has been mapped by microscopic techniques9-11, and the charge transfer dynamics in photocatalyst aggregations have been revealed by time-resolved spectroscopy12,13, spatiotemporally evolving charge transfer processes in single photocatalyst particles cannot be tracked, and their exact mechanism is unknown. Here we perform spatiotemporally resolved surface photovoltage measurements on cuprous oxide photocatalyst particles to map holistic charge transfer processes on the femtosecond to second timescale at the single-particle level. We find that photogenerated electrons are transferred to the catalytic surface quasi-ballistically through inter-facet hot electron transfer on a subpicosecond timescale, whereas photogenerated holes are transferred to a spatially separated surface and stabilized through selective trapping on a microsecond timescale. We demonstrate that these ultrafast-hot-electron-transfer and anisotropic-trapping regimes, which challenge the classical perception of a drift-diffusion model, contribute to the efficient charge separation in photocatalysis and improve photocatalytic performance. We anticipate that our findings will be used to illustrate the universality of other photoelectronic devices and facilitate the rational design of photocatalysts.

Abstract
The present study proposes a laser irradiation method to superficially reduce BiVO4 photoelectrodes and boost their water oxidation reaction performance. The origin of this enhanced performance toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) was studied using a combination of a suite of structural, chemical, and mechanistic advanced characterization techniques including X-ray photoelectron (XPS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS), among others. We found that the reduction of the material is localized at the surface of the sample and that this effect creates effective n-type doping and a shift to more favorable energy band positions toward water oxidation. This thermodynamic effect, together with the change in sample morphology to larger and denser domains, results in an extended lifetime of the photogenerated carriers and improved charge extraction. In addition, the stability of the reduced sample in water was also confirmed. All of these effects result in a two-fold increase in the photocurrent density of the laser-treated samples.

Abstract
Oxygen vacancies generally create midgap states in transition metal oxides, which are expected to decrease the photoelectrochemical water-splitting efficiency. Recent experiments defy this expectation but leave the mechanism unclear. Focusing on the photoanode WO3 as a prototypical system, we demonstrate using nonadiabatic molecular dynamics that an oxygen vacancy suppresses nonradiative electron-hole recombination, because the defect acts as an electron reservoir instead of a recombination center. The occupied midgap electrons prefer to be populated a priori compared to the band edge transition because of a larger transition dipole moment, converting to depleted/unoccupied trap states that rapidly accept conduction band electrons and then cause trap-assisted recombination by impeding the bandgap recombination regardless of oxygen vacancy configurations. The reported results provide a fundamental understanding of the "realistic" role of the oxygen vacancies and their influence on charge-phonon dynamics and carrier lifetime. The study generates valuable insights into the design of high-performance transition metal oxide photocatalysts.

Abstract
Although two-dimensional (2D) layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been widely used as efficient nanoagents for biological diagnosis and treatment, they have been found to be inert as photosensitizers (PSs) for photodynamic therapy (PDT). Herein, we report the defect engineering of ultrathin 2D CoMo-LDH and NiMo-LDH nanosheets as highly active inorganic PSs for PDT in the third near-infrared (NIR-III) window. Hydrothermal-synthesized 2D CoMo-LDH and NiMo-LDH nanosheets are etched via a simple acid treatment to obtain defect-rich CoMo-LDH and NiMo-LDH nanosheets. Importantly, the defect-rich CoMo-LDH nanosheets exhibit much higher activity (~97 times) for generation of reactive oxygen species than that of the pristine CoMo-LDH nanosheets under a NIR-III 1567 nm laser irradiation. Therefore, after modification with polyethylene glycol, the defect-rich CoMo-LDH nanosheets can be used as an efficient inorganic PS for PDT to efficiently induce cancer cells apoptosis in vitro and eradicate tumors in vivo under 1567 nm laser irradiation. Defect engineering of 2 dimensional layered double hydroxide sheets improves their photocatalytic activity. Here, the authors etch sheets in acid and show that the etched sheets generate substantially more reactive oxygen species that untreated sheets and the treated sheets can be used to kill cancer cells in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract
Slow water oxidation kinetics and poor charge transport restrict the development of efficient BiVO4 photoanodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Oxygen vacancy as an effective strategy can significantly enhance charge transport and improve conductivity in semiconductor photoanodes. Herein, we obtained BiVO4 photoanodes with appropriate oxygen vacancy by treating them with hypophosphite, which significantly improved the PEC performance. The synthesized photoanode exhibits a remarkable photocurrent density of 3.37 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode with excellent stability. Interestingly, the performance improvement mainly originates from the oxygen vacancy rather than P doping. Our study provides insights in understanding the role of oxygen vacancy in PEC water splitting and strategies for designing more efficient photoelectrodes.

Abstract
Polar domain walls in centrosymmetric ferroelastics induce inhomogeneity that is the origin of advantageous multifunctionality. In particular, polar domain walls promote charge-carrier separation and hence are promising for energy conversion applications that overcome the hurdles of the rate-limiting step in the traditional photoelectrochemical water splitting processes. Yet, while macroscopic studies investigate the materials at the device scale, the origin of this phenomenon in general and the emergence of polar domain walls during the structural phase transition in particular has remained elusive, encumbering the development of this attractive system. Here, it is demonstrated that twin domain walls arise in centrosymmetric BiVO4 films and they exhibit localized piezoelectricity. It is also shown that during the structural phase transition from the tetragonal to monoclinic, the symmetry reduction is accompanied by an emergence of strain gradient, giving rise to flexoelectric effect and the polar domain walls. These results not only expose the emergence of polar domain walls at centrosymmetric systems by means of direct observation, but they also expand the realm of potential application of ferroelastics, especially in photoelectrochemistry and local piezoelectricity.

Abstract
Efficient photoelectrodes are highly desired in bio-photoelectrochemical systems (BPES). Herein, in this paper, the oxygen defect-rich BiVO4/Ni9S8 photoanode was developed and coupled with a biocathode for enhanced chlortertracycline (CTC) degradation and current generation in the self-biased BPES. Characterization results showed that the optimized BiVO4/Ni9S8-7 mg-150 °C NF exhibited the best photocatalytic activity, due to that the rich oxygen vacancies and Ni9S8 could significantly improve light absorption, enhance photo-generated carriers separation, and accelerate charges transfer. CTC (20 mg L-1) removal efficiency from the BPES was about 1.3 times (82.3% vs 64.7%) of that from the unilluminated reactor, and current output (0.68 A m-3) was about 7.6 times (0.09 A m-3). The dominant species in genus level was Geobacter, which is capable of reducing nitroaromatics and in favor of reductive dehalogenation of CTC. Besides, Comamonas and Rhodopseudomonas that are capable of degrading antibiotics were also detected. Possible degradation pathways and mechanism of CTC degradation in the BPES were proposed. This research advances the development of photoelectrode materials for light-driven BPESs and enriches antibiotics degradation mechanism.

Abstract
The photocatalytic conversion of solar energy offers a potential route to renewable energy, and its efficiency relies on effective charge separation in nanostructured photocatalysts. Understanding the charge-separation mechanism is key to improving the photocatalytic performance and this has now been enabled by advances in the spatially resolved surface photovoltage (SRSPV) method. In this Review we highlight progress made by SRSPV in mapping charge distributions at the nanoscale and determining the driving forces of charge separation in heterogeneous photocatalyst particles. We discuss how charge separation arising from a built-in electric field, diffusion, and trapping can be exploited and optimized through photocatalyst design. We also highlight the importance of asymmetric engineering of photocatalysts for effective charge separation. Finally, we provide an outlook on further opportunities that arise from leveraging these insights to guide the rational design of photocatalysts and advance the imaging technique to expand the knowledge of charge separation.

Abstract
The photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell that collects and stores abundant sunlight to hydrogen fuel promises a clean and renewable pathway for future energy needs and challenges. Monoclinic bismuth vanadate (BiVO4 ), having an earth-abundancy, nontoxicity, suitable optical absorption, and an ideal n-type band position, has been in the limelight for decades. BiVO4 is a potential photoanode candidate due to its favorable outstanding features like moderate bandgap, visible light activity, better chemical stability, and cost-effective synthesis methods. However, BiVO4 suffers from rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers that have impeded further improvements of its PEC performances and stability. This review presents a close look at the emerging surface, bulk, and interface engineering strategies on BiVO4 photoanode. First, an effective approach of surface functionalization via different cocatalysts to improve the surface kinetics of BiVO4 is discussed. Second, state-of-the-art methodologies such as nanostructuring, defect engineering, and doping to further enhance light absorption and photogenerated charge transport in bulk BiVO4 are reviewed. Third, interface engineering via heterostructuring to improve charge separation is introduced. Lastly, perspectives on the foremost challenges and some motivating outlooks to encourage the future research progress in this emerging frontier are offered.

Abstract
Polarons play a major role in determining the chemical properties of transition-metal oxides. Recent experiments show that adsorbates can attract inner polarons to surface sites. These findings require an atomistic understanding of the adsorbate influence on polaron dynamics and lifetime. We consider reduced rutile TiO2(110) with an oxygen vacancy as a prototypical surface and a CO molecule as a classic probe and perform ab initio adiabatic molecular dynamics, time-domain density functional theory, and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. The simulations show that subsurface polarons have little influence on CO adsorption and CO can desorb easily. On the contrary, surface polarons strongly enhance CO adsorption. At the same time, the adsorbed CO attracts polarons to the surface, allowing them to participate in catalytic processes with CO. The CO interaction with polarons changes their orbital origin, suppresses polaron hopping, and stabilizes them at surface sites. Partial delocalization of polarons onto CO decouples them from free holes, decreasing the nonadiabatic coupling and shortening the quantum coherence time, thereby reducing charge recombination. The calculations demonstrate that CO prefers to adsorb at the next-nearest-neighbor five-coordinated Ti3+ surface electron polaron sites. The reported results provide a fundamental understanding of the influence of electron polarons on the initial stage of reactant adsorption and the effect of the adsorbate-polaron interaction on the polaron dynamics and lifetime. The study demonstrates how charge and polaron properties can be controlled by adsorbed species, allowing one to design high-performance transition-metal oxide catalysts.

Abstract
The sensitive and accurate detection of microRNA (miRNA) has meaningful values for clinical diagnosis application as an early stage of tumor markers. Herein, a novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor was developed for the ultrasensitive and highly selective detection of microRNA-122 (miRNA-122) based on a direct Z-scheme heterojunction of Zn vacancy-mediated CdS/ZnS (CSZS-VZn). Impressively, the prepared Z-scheme heterojunction nanocomposite with defect level properties could make the photogenerated charges stay at the Zn vacancy defect levels and combine photogenerated holes in the valence bands of CdS, thus significantly achieving a better charge carrier separation efficiency and broadening the absorption of visible light and demonstrating 5-8 times enhancement of PEC response compared to single-component materials. Simultaneously, an exonuclease III (Exo-III)-assisted signal amplification strategy and a strand displacement reaction were combined to improve the conversion efficiency of the target and further increase the detection sensitivity. More importantly, the elaborated biosensor showed ultrasensitive and highly specific detection of the target miRNA-122 over a wide linear range from 10 aM to 100 pM with a low detection limit of 3.3 aM and exhibited enormous potential in the fields of bioanalysis and clinical diagnosis.

Abstract
Investigation of the mechanism of the water oxidation reaction for hematite photoanodes has been one of the most persistently pursued topics in the course of understanding photoelectrochemical water splitting by transition metal oxides. Unfortunately, existing experimental techniques often require over-simplified models and theories that assume only one reaction path. In this work, however, it is proposed that water oxidation on hematite can proceed via mixed reaction paths according to spectroelectrochemical results without a priori assumptions. The true absorption signals of surface states responsible for water oxidation are isolated from subsidiary signals for undoped and Ti-doped hematite and contrasted with those of inactive species. The evolution of absorption signals as a function of applied potential and illumination intensity highlights the non-negligible contribution of direct hole transfer, especially for highly doped hematite.

Abstract
Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has been regarded as a promising technology for sustainable hydrogen production. The development of efficient photoelectrode materials is the key to improve the solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency towards practical application. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is one of the most promising photoanode materials with the advantages of visible light absorption, good chemical stability, nontoxic feature, and low cost. However, the PEC performance of BiVO4 photoanodes is limited by the relatively short hole diffusion length and poor electron transport properties. The recent rapid development of vacancy defect engineering has significantly improved the PEC performance of BiVO4. In this review article, the fundamental properties of BiVO4 are presented, followed by an overview of the methods for creating different kinds of vacancy defects in BiVO4 photoanodes. Then, the roles of vacancy defects in tuning the electronic structure, promoting charge separation, and increasing surface photoreaction kinetics of BiVO4 photoanodes are critically discussed. Finally, the major challenges and some encouraging perspectives for future research on vacancy defect engineering of BiVO4 photoanodes are presented, providing guidelines for the design of efficient BiVO4 photoanodes for solar fuel production.

Abstract
Spinel oxide materials have been widely used as oxygen evolution catalysts to enhance the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of photoelectrodes. Herein, we demonstrate that the water splitting efficiency of a photoanode can be further enhanced by introducing its photothermal effect. Under near-infrared radiation, the temperature of the NiCo2O4/BiVO4 photoanode increases moderately, leading to improved water oxidation kinetics and charge transport simultaneously. With the assistance of the photothermal effect, the obtained photoanode reaches a photocurrent density of 6.20 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode. A series of spinel-type MCo2O4 oxides (M = Mn, Zn, Cu, and Fe) are deposited on the surface of the BiVO4 photoanode to show similar photothermally enhanced PEC performance. The research discovery provides a way for improving the catalytic activity of photoanode materials with a photothermal effect, which may be applied to various fields of energy conversion, including CO2 reduction, N2 fixation, and pollutant degradation.

Abstract
The development of metal ion-intercalated active materials for excellent electrochemical performance in rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) is challenging. The structure instability and intrinsic electrostatic repulsion of the lattice framework cause structural breakdown and low-rate performance. In response to these problems, yttrium vanadium oxide-poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT@YVO) composite is reported as stable cathode material for AZIBs. The introduction of PEDOT in YVO nanorods improves the crystalline structure with an enlarged interplanar lattice spacing of 3.4 Å. The PEDOT@YVO composite electrode demonstrates effective electric conductivity and a higher initial specific capacity of 308.5 mAh g-1 than that (125.5 mAh g-1 ) of the pure YVO at 0.2 C rate. It also features a long-term stable discharge-charge cycle performance of 4000 cycles with a capacity retention of 79.2% at 1C rate, better than YVO (29.4 mAh g-1 ). The oxygen vacancies and improved electrical conductivity of the composite account for the invigorated electrochemical performance. Consequently, this work reveals another avenue for constructing unique electrodes to enhance the electrochemical properties of AZIBs.

Abstract
We review the current understanding of charge carriers in model hematite photoanodes at different stages. The origin of charge carriers is discussed based on the electronic structure and absorption features, highlighting the controversial assignment of the electronic transitions near the absorption edge. Next, the dynamic evolution of charge carriers is analyzed both on the ultrafast and on the surface reaction timescales, with special emphasis on the arguable spectroscopic assignment of electrons/holes and their kinetics. Further, the competitive charge transfer centers at the solid-liquid interface are reviewed, and the chemical nature of relevant surface states is updated. Finally, an overview on the function of widely employed surface cocatalysts is given to illustrate the complex influence of physiochemical modifications on the charge carrier dynamics. The understanding of charge carriers from their origin all the way to their interfacial transfer is vital for the future of photoanode design.

Abstract
A universal strategy is developed to construct a cascade Z‐Scheme system, in which an effective energy platform is the core to direct charge transfer and separation, blocking the unexpected type‐II charge transfer pathway. The dimension‐matched (001)TiO2‐g‐C3N4/BiVO4 nanosheet heterojunction (T‐CN/BVNS) is the first such model. The optimized cascade Z‐Scheme exhibits ≈19‐fold photoactivity improvement for CO2 reduction to CO in the absence of cocatalysts and costly sacrificial agents under visible‐light irradiation, compared with BVNS, which is also superior to other reported Z‐Scheme systems even with noble metals as mediators. The experimental results and DFT calculations based on van der Waals structural models on the ultrafast timescale reveal that the introduced T as the platform prolongs the lifetimes of spatially separated electrons and holes and does not compromise their reduction and oxidation potentials.

One-Pot Synthesis of Schiff Bases by Defect-Induced TiO 2-x-Catalyzed Tandem Transformation from Alcohols and Nitro Compounds. Inorg Chem 2021; 60:10715-10721. Abstract
Schiff bases that are generally formed from condensation reactions of aldehydes (or ketones) and amino groups could also be produced by a photodriven one-pot tandem reaction between alcohols and nitro compounds, in our case. Herein, TiO2-x porous cages derived from NH2-MIL-125 by a self-sacrificing template route are used to study the organic transformation and exhibit 100% conversion efficiency of nitrobenzene and 100% selectivity for Schiff bases in the system of benzyl alcohol (5 mL) and nitrobenzene (41 μL) upon light irradiation, but hydrogen by dehydrogenation of benzyl alcohol cannot be detected. Successful occurrence of the organic transformation is mainly attributed to Ti(III)-oxygen vacancy associates. Surface oxygen vacancy-related Ti(III) sites are responsible for binding with nitro groups, and low-coordinated Ti5c sites selectively adsorb hydroxyl groups of benzyl alcohol. The Ti(III) and oxygen vacancy associates capture photogenerated electrons for achievement of multielectron reduction of nitrobenzene and the subsequent Schiff base condensation reaction with the as-formed benzaldehyde.

Abstract
Photocatalytic water splitting system using particulate semiconductor materials is a promising strategy for converting solar energy into hydrogen and oxygen. In particular, visible-light-driven 'Z-scheme' printable photocatalyst sheets are cost-effective and scalable. However, little is known about the fundamental photophysical processes, which are key to explaining and promoting the photoactivity. Here, we applied the pattern-illumination time-resolved phase microscopy for a photocatalyst sheet composed of Mo-doped BiVO4 and Rh-doped SrTiO3 with indium tin oxide as the electron mediator to investigate photo-generated charge carrier dynamics. Using this method, we successfully observed the position- and structure-dependent charge carrier behavior and visualized the active/inactive sites in the sheets under the light irradiation via the time sequence images and the clustering analysis. This combination methodology could provide the material/synthesis optimization methods for the maximum performance of the photocatalyst sheets.
