Abstract
This study investigated the effect of processing (roasting and malting) and crop variety on fermentable oligo-di-monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) profile of millet, sorghum, soybean, and sesame varieties commonly consumed in Uganda. Two elite varieties and one indigenous variety for each crop were analyzed. Monosaccharide and polyols content was determined by HPLC-UV method, while disaccharides and oligosaccharide were determined using Megazyme kits. The elite varieties of soybean (Maksoy 3 N), Millet (Seremi 2) and sorghum (Narosorg 2) exhibited significantly (p < 0.05) lower oligosaccharide content compared to indigenous varieties with percentage differences ranging from 10.2 to 73.9%. Additionally, Maksoy 3 N and Narosorg 2 also exhibited significantly lower (p < 0.05) excess fructose content compared to the indigenous variety. Malting was more effective than roasting (p < 0.05) in reducing FODMAP categories and total FODMAP content. Malting effectively reduced excess fructose in all grain types to the recommended levels of <0.15 g/100 g compared to roasting. Moreover, malting reduced total oligosaccharides and total FODMAPs in soybean and sesame by more than 50%. However, this reduction did not achieve the recommended threshold of 0.3 g/100 g for total oligosaccharides and 0.5 g/100 g, for total FODMAPs which are a criterion to categorize low FODMAP diets. Malting conditions should be optimized to enhance its effectiveness in producing low FODMAP foods. This study highlights the importance of selecting appropriate grain variety and processing techniques that modify FODMAP content in foods that can be used for dietary therapy of gastro-intestinal disorders among vulnerable population.

Abstract
Background: Prebiotics are non-digestible dietary compounds, defined as substrates that are utilised by host microorganisms conferring a health benefit. Although fructo-oligosaccharides (FOSs) and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOSs) are among the most studied prebiotics and support intestinal normobiosis, comprehensive data on their content in foods remain limited. Objectives: The objective was to quantify the content of FOSs (kestose, nystose, and 1 F-β-fructofuranosylnystose) and GOSs (raffinose and stachyose) in 35 foods, including fruit and nuts, legumes, and cereals. We also estimated the intakes of prebiotics in an Italian population. Methods: We analysed the prebiotic content in foods using high-performance anion-exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPAEC-PAD). We estimated the prebiotic intake of 100 healthy controls from a case-control study on colorectal cancer conducted in Italy between 2017 and 2019. We used dietary information collected through a food frequency questionnaire and the prebiotic data quantified in this and a previous study. Results: FOSs were mostly detected in cereal products, with wheat bran and whole-meal rye flour containing the highest amount (around 0.7 g/100 g each). GOSs were most abundant in legumes, especially in dried soy products (around 4.0 g/100 g each). Mean daily intake was 0.236 g for total FOSs and 0.371 g for total GOSs. Wheat bran, raspberries, chestnuts, walnuts, raisins, soy milk, and soy yoghurt overall accounted for 3.9% of kestose, 1.2% of nystose, 0% of 1F-β-fructofuranosylnystose, 15.5% of raffinose, and 8.3% of stachyose total intakes. Conclusions: The present study enables the development of a comprehensive database on prebiotic content in foods through a consistent analytical method. This makes prebiotic intake assessments more accurate than previously available data and facilitates future epidemiological studies investigating their potential effects on health.

Abstract
Developing sensor arrays capturing comprehensive fluorescence (FL) spectra from a single probe is crucial for understanding sugar structures with very high similarity in biofluids. Therefore, the analysis of highly similar sugar' structures in biofluids based on the entire FL of a single nanozyme probe needs more concern, which makes the development of novel alternative approaches highly wanted for biomedical and other applications. Herein, a well-designed deep learning model with intrinsic information of 3D FL of CuO nanoparticles (NPs)' oxidase-like activity was developed to classify and predict the concentration of a group of sugars with very similar chemical structures in different media. The findings presented that the overall accuracy of the developed model in classifying the nine selected sugars was (99-100 %), which prompted us to transfer the developed model to predict the concentration of the selected sugars at a concentration range of (1-100 μM). The transferred model also gave excellent results (R2 = 97-100 %). Therefore, the model was extended to other more complex applications, namely the identification of mixtures of sugars in serum and the detection of polysaccharides in different media such as serum and lake water. Notably, LOD for fructose was determined at 4.23 nM, marking a 120-fold decrease compared to previous studies. Our developed model was also compared with other deep learning-based models, and the results have demonstrated remarkable progress. Moreover, the identification of other possible coexisting interference substances in lake water samples was considered. This work marks a significant advancement, opening avenues for the widespread application of sensor arrays integrating nanozymes and deep learning techniques in biomedical and other diverse fields.

Abstract
In this study, Eugenia calycina and Eugenia stigmatosa, native Brazilian berries, were explored regarding their proximal composition, bioactive compounds, and antioxidant activities. The edible parts of both fruits presented a low content of lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates, resulting in a low caloric value (<70 kcal/100 g fw). E. stigmatosa fruit showed a high total fiber content (3.26 g/100 g fw), qualifying it as a source of dietary fiber. The sugar profile was mainly monosaccharides (glucose, fructose, and rhamnose). Significant contents of total phenolics and flavonoids, monomeric anthocyanins and, condensed tannins, were observed in both fruits. E. calycina contains a high level of anthocyanins, primarily cyanidin-3-glucoside (242.97 µg/g). Other phenolic compounds were also found, the main ones being rutin and ellagic acid. In contrast, E. stigmatosa is mainly composed of rutin and gallic acid. Furthermore, these fruits showed expressive antioxidant activity, evidenced by ORAC, FRAP, and ABTS. These Eugenia fruits are promising sources of bioactive compounds and have a low caloric and high dietary fiber content, making them interesting options for inclusion in a balanced diet, contributing to the promotion of health and the valorization and conservation of Brazilian biodiversity.

Abstract
In this article we present a protocol for the use of the low-FODMAP diet in paediatric patients and review of the current evidence on its efficacy. These short-chain carbohydrates, which can be fermented by the intestinal microbiota, are found in a wide variety of foods, mainly of plant origin. The low-FODMAP diet is a therapeutic tool used for the management of gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome. The sources we used were PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar and institutional websites. Following consumption of FODMAP-rich foods, a series of end products are generated that are not absorbed, giving rise to symptoms. Before starting a low-FODMAP diet, it is important to carry out a diagnostic evaluation including any applicable tests. Treatment is structured in 3 phases: elimination, reintroduction and personalization phase. In the first phase, FODMAP-rich foods are eliminated for 2-3 weeks. In the second phase, lasting 8 weeks, FODMAP-rich foods are gradually reintroduced. The last phase consists in customizing the diet according to individual tolerance. This article details which foods contain FODMAPs and possible substitutes. In addition, specific food diary/intake tracking and educational materials are provided in a series of appendices to facilitate adherence to the diet. Although most studies have been conducted in adults, there is also some evidence on the beneficial effects in the paediatric age group, with a reduction of symptoms, especially in patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders. Nevertheless, more research is required on the subject.

Abstract
AIMS To explore the relationship between nutritional intake, fermentable oligo-, di, monosaccharides and polyols, and carbohydrate malabsorption, with gastrointestinal symptoms during a 56 km trail ultramarathon event and identify differences in nutritional intake between runners with severe and non-severe gastrointestinal symptoms. METHODS Forty-four ultramarathoners recorded and self-reported dietary intake 3 days before, morning of, and during the ultramarathon with gastrointestinal symptoms obtained retrospectively and nutrient analysis via FoodWorks. Carbohydrate malabsorption was determined via breath hydrogen content pre- and post-race. Spearman's rank-order and Mann-Whitney U-tests were used to identify relationships and differences between groups. RESULTS Total fermentable oligo-, di, monosaccharides and polyols intake were not associated with gastrointestinal symptoms, but weak associations were observed for lower energy (rs = -0.302, p = 0.044) and fat intake (rs = -0.340, p = 0.024) 3 days before with upper gastrointestinal symptoms and higher caffeine intake 3 days before with overall gastrointestinal symptoms (rs = 0.314, p = 0.038). Total fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols intake and breath hydrogen were not different between those with severe versus non-severe symptoms (p > 0.05). Although those with severe symptoms had higher caffeine (p = 0.032), and total polyols intake (p = 0.031) 3 days before, and higher % energy from fat (p = 0.043) and sorbitol intake (p = 0.026) during the race, and slower ultramarathon finish times (p = 0.042). CONCLUSION Total fermentable oligo-, di-, and monosaccharides intake and carbohydrate malabsorption were not associated with gastrointestinal symptoms. Additional research on the effect of fat, caffeine, and polyol intake on exercise-associated gastrointestinal symptoms is warranted and presents new nutritional areas for consideration when planning nutritional intake for ultramarathoners.

Abstract
The effect of low-FODMAPs diet on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in Western China has not been reported. We aimed to investigate the effect of low-FODMAPs diet on IBS patients in the area and whether low-FODMAPs diet-induced alterations of microbiota could be improved through probiotics. IBS patients were randomized to the control group, low-FODMAPs diet group, probiotics group, or combined group. IBS Symptom Severity Score questionnaire (IBS-SSS) and IBS Quality of Life Score questionnaire (IBS-QOL) were completed at baseline, 2 and 4 weeks to evaluate the severity of symptoms. Fresh feces were collected for analyses of gut microbiota and short-chain fatty acids at baseline and 4 weeks after intervention. Seventy-three patients were included in the per protocol analysis. After intervention, there was significant improvement in IBS-SSS in the low-FODMAPs group (37.5%, 44.2%), probiotics group (51.4%, 62.0%), and combined group (34.1%, 40.4%) at both 2 weeks and 4 weeks, compared with the baseline (p < .05). In the low-FODMAPs group, the abundance of several microbiota (Lachnoclostridium, Enterococcus, etc.) was significantly decreased. Furthermore, after the supplementation of probiotics in the combined group, the abundance of Genus_Ruminococcus, Coprococcus, Acidaminococcus, Ruminiclostridium, Akkermansia, Eggerthella, and Oxalobacter was significantly increased, which was associated with the improvements of symptoms score in the Pearson correlation analysis. Our study confirmed the effectiveness and safety of short-term low-FODMAPs diet in IBS symptoms based on the Chinese diet in Western China. The combination of low-FODMAPs and probiotics plays a beneficial role in gut microbiota in IBS.

Abstract
Vegetables, cereals and fruit are foods rich in fibre with beneficial and nutritional effects as their consumption reduces the onset of degenerative diseases, especially cardiovascular ones. Among fibres, inulin, oligofructose or fructooligosaccharide (FOS) are the best-studied. Inulin is a generic term to cover all linear β(2-1) fructans, with a variable degree of polymerization. In this review a better understanding of the importance of the degree of polymerization of inulin as a dietary fibre, functions, health benefits, classifications, types and its applications in the food industry was considered in different fortified foods. Inulin has been used to increase the nutritional and healthy properties of the product as a sweetener and as a substitute for fats and carbohydrates, improving the nutritional value and decreasing the glycemic index, with the advantage of not compromising taste and consistency of the product. Bifidogenic and prebiotic effects of inulin have been well established, inulin-type fructans are fermented by the colon to produce short-chain fatty acids, with important local and systemic actions. Addition of inulin with different degrees of polymerization to daily foods for the production of fortified pasta and bread was reviewed, and the impact on sensorial, technological and organoleptic characteristics even of gluten-free bread was also reported.

Abstract
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition affecting the digestive system and can be triggered by several different factors, including diet. To ease symptoms of IBS, a diet low in fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) is often recommended. Pasta, as a staple food in the Western World, is naturally high in FODMAPs. This study investigates the impact of insoluble and soluble dietary fibre ingredients in low-FODMAPs pasta. The assessment included physicochemical, sensory, and nutritional quality. Soluble fibre strengthened gluten network, which caused a lower cooking loss and a lower release of sugars during in vitro starch digestion. Insoluble fibre interfered with the gluten network development to a higher extent causing a higher sugar release during digestion. This study reveals the most suitable fibre ingredients for the development of pasta with elevated nutritional value and sensory characteristics compared to commercial products on the market. This type of pasta has a high potential of being suitable for IBS patients.

Abstract
This review aimed to critically and comparatively analyze the physicochemical, proximate, nutritional, phytochemical composition, and bioactivities of araticum (Annona crassiflora Mart.) (AAc), a fruit from the Brazilian Cerrado. Additionally, the potential applications of this fruit in the food industry were reviewed. Data and information were collected from the Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases. AAc, a fruit mainly studied in the Brazilian regions of Minas Gerais and Goiás, has well-documented physicochemical, proximate, and nutritional characteristics. It is rich in fiber, sugars, vitamins A and C, minerals, and oil, making it attractive to the food industry. However, there are research gaps, such as the impact of climatic conditions on the AAc chemical composition. Additional studies are needed, especially for the peel and seeds, and investigations of pre-treatments effect on the chemical composition are recommended. The application of AAc in food products is mainly limited to pulp, but there is potential for using peels and seeds. AAc is a rich source of phytochemical compounds with various biological properties, such as antioxidants, hepatoprotective, and antimicrobial activities. Future studies should explore other phytochemicals present in the fruit beyond phenolic compounds. The consumption of AAc can contribute to combating food insecurity malnutrition, and promoting the conservation of the Brazilian Cerrado.

Abstract
Natural fruits contain a large variety of cis-diols. However, due to the lack of a high-resolution sensor that can simultaneously identify all cis-diols without a need of complex sample pretreatment, direct and rapid analysis of fruits in a hand-held device has never been previously reported. Nanopore, a versatile single molecule sensor, can be specially engineered to perform this task. A hetero-octameric Mycobacterium smegmatis porin A (MspA) nanopore modified with a sole phenylboronic acid (PBA) adapter is prepared. This engineered MspA accurately recognizes 1,2-diphenols, alditols, α-hydroxy acids and saccharides in prune, grape, lemon, different varieties of kiwifruits and commercial juice products. Assisted with a custom machine learning program, an accuracy of 99.3% is reported and the sample pretreatment is significantly simplified. Enantiomers such as DL-malic acids can also be directly identified, enabling sensing of synthetic food additives. Though demonstrated with fruits, these results suggest wide applications of nanopore in food and drug administration uses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As an essential compound in living organism, saccharides have attracted enormous attentions from scientists in various fields. Understanding the distribution of saccharides in various samples is of great scientific importance. However, the low signal response and lack of specific recognition technology of saccharides and the complex matrix of samples make the analysis of saccharides a very challenge task. Thus, the development of a simple and straightforward strategy for the analysis of saccharides would represent a great contribution to the field. RESULTS In this study, by employing the sulfonyl functionalized magnetic dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles as the substrate, we develop an integrated platform for analysis of saccharides. The construction of the platform mainly relied on multi-functional boronic acid, which serves as separation and derivation ligands at the same time. In the general procedure, the boronic acid is first immobilized onto the surface of substrate, then the selective enrichment of saccharides can be realized via boronate affinity separation. Finally, by the rational choice of the solution, we are able to elute the labelled complex (boronic acid-saccharide) from the substrate, which can be direct subjected to HPLC-UV analysis. The reliable precision (<15 %), accuracy (80-100 %), reproducibility (<10 %), improved sensitivity (20x) and limited time-consuming (down to minutes) of the proposed platform are experimentally demonstrated. SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY The successful quantification of different saccharides (alditols, glucose) in real samples is achieved. The proposed strategy is not only straightforward and fast, but also avoid the requirement of special equipment. With these attractive features, we believe that this strategy will greatly prompt the analysis of saccharides in various samples (eg. food, pharmaceutics and biosamples).

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of food in managing bile acid diarrhoea (BAD) is poorly understood. The present study explored the prevalence of food intolerance amongst adults with BAD. METHODS The study comprised a cross-sectional survey of adults with BAD determined by the 75 selenium homotaurocholic acid test (SeHCAT) living in the UK. Participants anonymously completed an online questionnaire on 39 food items. Frequency of food in general affecting BAD symptoms, as well as frequencies of diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence and consequential food avoidance after food item ingestion, were assessed. Food group avoidance was also assessed. RESULTS There were 434 participants who completed the questionnaire between April and May 2021 of whom 80% reported moderate to severe chronic diarrhoea. Food intolerances were reported by 88.0% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 84.6-90.9) of participants. Diarrhoea was reported most frequently after take-away food, fish and chips, creamy sauces, cream and large quantities of fruit (range 41.0%-33.6%). Lowest frequencies were for potato, avocado, mango, watermelon and pear (range 3.7%-7.4%) for the foods listed in the questionnaire. Similar trends were found for abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence and consequential food avoidance. Symptom-triggering within 30 min of ingestion was more prevalence than after 30 min for almost all foods. Food group avoidance was highest for fatty foods (81.2%; 95% CI = 77.8-85.3) followed by dairy (53.9%; 95% CI = 49.1-58.7). CONCLUSIONS Perceived food intolerance amongst adults with BAD and persisting diarrhoeal symptoms is high. Important triggers were meals with a higher fat content and higher-fat dairy products. Diets amongst those with persisting diarrhoeal symptoms may be overly restrictive.

Abstract
The low FODMAP (fermentable oligosaccharide, disaccharide, monosaccharide, and polyol) diet is a beneficial therapeutic approach for patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, how the low FODMAP diet works is still not completely understood. These mechanisms encompass not only traditionally known factors such as luminal distension induced by gas and water but also recent evidence on the role of FOMAPs in the modulation of visceral hypersensitivity, increases in intestinal permeability, the induction of microbiota changes, and the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), as well as metabolomics and alterations in motility. Although most of the supporting evidence is of low quality, recent trials have confirmed its effectiveness, even though the majority of the evidence pertains only to the restriction phase and its effectiveness in relieving abdominal bloating and pain. This review examines potential pathophysiological mechanisms and provides an overview of the existing evidence on the effectiveness of the low FODMAP diet across various IBS subtypes. Key considerations for its use include the challenges and disadvantages associated with its practical implementation, including the need for professional guidance, variations in individual responses, concerns related to microbiota, nutritional deficiencies, the development of constipation, the necessity of excluding an eating disorder before commencing the diet, and the scarcity of long-term data. Despite its recognized efficacy in symptom management, acknowledging these limitations becomes imperative for a nuanced comprehension of the role of a low FODMAP diet in managing IBS. By investigating its potential mechanisms and evidence across IBS subtypes and addressing emerging modulations alongside limitations, this review aims to serve as a valuable resource for healthcare practitioners, researchers, and patients navigating the intricate landscape of IBS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES The dietary intake of foods with fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAP) is known to adversely affect patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, the effects of FODMAP have been studied predominantly among Western populations. This study aimed to identify foods high in FODMAP content which form a part of the Korean adult diet and obtain basic data for the preparation of IBS guidelines. SUBJECTS/METHODS An online survey of 1,000 adults from the general population in the age group of 20 to 40 years was performed. Data from 787 participants (men, 386; women, 401) were analyzed. The general characteristics of the participants, health status, IBS diagnosis using the Rome III diagnostic criteria, semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire findings, and food items causing symptoms were analyzed. RESULTS Overall, 169 participants (21.5%) had IBS. The contribution of the FODMAP nutrients in both IBS and healthy groups was as follows: fructan > lactose > excess fructose > sorbitol > mannitol > galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS). The fructan intake was 4.6 ± 2.2 g/day and 4.3 ± 2.5 g/day in the IBS and healthy groups (P = 0.014), respectively. In the IBS group, the ratio of the intake of fructan to the total FODMAP intake was 39.5%, 29.8%, and 5.8% through onions, garlic, and bananas, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Fructan was the FODMAP nutrient most consumed by Korean adults. Therefore, given the difference in the dietary habits of each country's population, the dietary guidelines for IBS should be country specific.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adherence to the American Cancer Society (ACS) guidelines of avoiding obesity, maintaining physical activity, and consuming a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is associated with longer survival in colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors. Dietary components of the ACS guidelines may act in part by changing the microbiome, which is implicated in CRC outcomes. OBJECTIVES We conducted a pilot cross-sectional study to explore associations between ACS guidelines and the gut microbiome. METHODS Stool samples and questionnaires were collected from 28 CRC survivors at the University of California, San Francisco from 2019 to 2020. ACS scores were calculated based on validated questionnaires. Gut microbial community structure from 16S amplicons and gene/pathway abundances from metagenomics were tested for associations with the ACS score and its components using ANOVA and general linear models. RESULTS The overall ACS score was not significantly associated with variations in the fecal microbiota. However, fruit and vegetable intake and alcohol intake accounted for 19% (P = 0.005) and 13% (P = 0.01) of variation in the microbiota, respectively. Fruit/vegetable consumption was associated with increased microbial diversity, increased Firmicutes, decreased Bacteroidota, and changes to multiple genes and metabolic pathways, including enriched pathways for amino acid and short-chain fatty acid biosynthesis and plant-associated sugar degradation. In contrast, alcohol consumption was positively associated with overall microbial diversity, negatively associated with Bacteroidota abundance, and associated with changes to multiple genes and metabolic pathways. The other components of the ACS score were not statistically significantly associated with the fecal microbiota in our sample. CONCLUSIONS These results guide future studies examining the impact of changes in the intake of fruits, vegetables, and alcoholic drinks on the gut microbiome of CRC survivors.

Abstract
During the last decade, scientific interest in and consumer attention to sourdough fermentation in bread making has increased. On the one hand, this technology may favorably impact product quality, including flavor and shelf-life of bakery products; on the other hand, some cereal components, especially in wheat and rye, which are known to cause adverse reactions in a small subset of the population, can be partially modified or degraded. The latter potentially reduces their harmful effects, but depends strongly on the composition of sourdough microbiota, processing conditions and the resulting acidification. Tolerability, nutritional composition, potential health effects and consumer acceptance of sourdough bread are often suggested to be superior compared to yeast-leavened bread. However, the advantages of sourdough fermentation claimed in many publications rely mostly on data from chemical and in vitro analyzes, which raises questions about the actual impact on human nutrition. This review focuses on grain components, which may cause adverse effects in humans and the effect of sourdough microbiota on their structure, quantity and biological properties. Furthermore, presumed benefits of secondary metabolites and reduction of contaminants are discussed. The benefits claimed deriving from in vitro and in vivo experiments will be evaluated across a broader spectrum in terms of clinically relevant effects on human health. Accordingly, this critical review aims to contribute to a better understanding of the extent to which sourdough bread may result in measurable health benefits in humans.

Abstract
L-cysteine (L-Cys) capped ZnS fluorescent probe (L-ZnS) were synthesized by binding ZnS nanoparticles in situ with L-Cys, the fluorescence intensity of L-ZnS increased more than 3.5 times than that of ZnS due to the cleavage of S-H bonds and the formation of Zn-S bonds between the thiol group of L-Cys and ZnS. The addition of copper ions (Cu2+) can effectively quench the fluorescence of L-ZnS to realize the rapid detection of trace Cu2+. The L-ZnS showed high sensitivity and selectivity to Cu2+. The LOD (limit of detection) of Cu2+ was as low as 7.28 nM and linearity in the concentration range of 3.5-25.5 μM. Meanwhile, for the first time, electron localization function (ELF), bond order density (BOD), and natural adaptive orbital (NAdO) analysis in the Multiwfn wavefunction program based on density functional theory were carried out to probe the binding sites and binding mode of L-Cys with Cu2+, it indicated that the deprotonated carboxyl oxygen atoms of L-Cys had the lowest electrostatic potential (ESP) and provided lone pair electrons to coordinate with Cu2+ to form non-luminescent ground state complexes, which led to fluorescence quenching of L-ZnS. From the microscopic point of view of atoms, the mechanism of fluorescence enhancement of L-Cys capped ZnS and the mechanism of fluorescence quenching after adding Cu2+ were revealed in depth, the theoretical analysis results were accordance with the experiments.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Diet appears to trigger symptoms in the majority of individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and is associated with a reduced quality of life. There has been a recent focus on the role of dietary therapies to manage individuals with IBS. The aim of this review is to discuss the utility of traditional dietary advice (TDA), low-FODMAP diet (LFD) and gluten-free diet (GFD) in IBS. RECENT FINDINGS Several recent randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been published demonstrating the efficacy of the LFD and GFD in IBS, with the evidence base for TDA being predominantly based on clinical experience, with emerging RCTs evaluating TDA. Only one RCT has been published to date comparing TDA, LFD and GFD head to head, with no difference noted between diets in terms of efficacy. However, TDA has been noted to be more patient-friendly and is commonly implemented as a first-line dietary therapy. SUMMARY Dietary therapies have been demonstrated to improve symptoms in patients with IBS. In view of insufficient evidence to recommend one diet over another currently, specialist dietetic input in conjunction with patient preference is required to determine implementation of dietary therapies. Novel methods of dietetic delivery are required in view of the lack of dietetic provision to deliver these therapies.

Abstract
Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are complex glycans associated with positive infant health outcomes. The concentrations of HMOs in the milk of lactating women are associated with substantial intra- and inter-individual differences and may be influenced by maternal physiological and/or nutrition-related factors. The primary aim of this study was to explore potential influences of short-term maternal diet and current body composition on HMO profiles in mature human milk. Milk samples were collected at 3-4 months postpartum from 101 healthy Australian women using standardised procedures, and analysed for macronutrients (lactose, fat, and protein). In addition, HMO concentrations were analysed using liquid-chromatography mass-spectrometry (LC-MS). Maternal dietary data were collected using three validated 24-h dietary recalls, and the body composition of a subgroup of mothers was assessed by DEXA scans (n = 30). Most (79%) of the women were secretor-positive. Individual nutrients were not significantly correlated with HMO concentrations after correction for multiple comparisons (p > 0.05), except for dietary folate intake. DEXA scans revealed no associations between HMO profiles and maternal body composition during established lactation. The study findings suggest a lack of clear and consistent associations between maternal nutrition and HMO concentrations in mature human milk from healthy lactating women with adequate dietary intake. The prevailing influence of genetic variation in lactating mothers may overshadow any impact of maternal nutritional and/or physiological status on HMO composition in mature human milk.

Abstract
FODMAPs are fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides, and polyols. The application of homofermentative lactic acid bacteria (LAB) has been investigated as a promising approach for producing low-FODMAP whole-wheat bread. The low-FODMAP diet is recommended to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Wheat flour is staple to many diets and is a significant source of fructans, which are considered FODMAPs. The reduction of fructans via sourdough fermentation, generally associated with heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria (LAB), often leads to the accumulation of other FODMAPs. A collection of 244 wild-type LAB strains was isolated from different environments and their specific FODMAP utilisation profiles established. Three homofermentative strains were selected for production of whole-wheat sourdough bread. These were Lactiplantibacillus plantarum FST1.7 (FST1.7), Lacticaseibacillus paracasei R3 (R3), and Pediococcus pentosaceus RYE106 (RYE106). Carbohydrate levels in flour, sourdoughs (before and after 48 h fermentation), and resulting breads were analysed via HPAEC-PAD and compared with whole-wheat bread leavened with baker’s yeast. While strain R3 was the most efficient in FODMAP reduction, breads produced with all three test strains had FODMAP content below cut-off levels that would trigger IBS symptoms. Results of this study highlighted the potential of homofermentative LAB in producing low-FODMAP whole-wheat bread.

Abstract
Background and aims A low fermentable oligosaccharide, disaccharide, monosaccharide, and polyols (FODMAP) diet alleviates symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We aimed to investigate the relationship between habitual FODMAP intake and post-prandial bowel symptoms in adults with IBS, functional diarrhoea (FD), or constipation (FD) (functional bowel disorders), and in healthy adults (controls). Methods 292 participants (173 with functional bowel disorders and 119 controls) completed a food and symptom times diary. Estimated meal portion sizes were entered into the Monash FODMAP Calculator to analyse FODMAP content. Wilcoxon and ANOVA tests were used to investigate the relationship between FODMAP intake and post-prandial bowel symptoms. Results IBS participants experienced more post-prandial bowel symptoms compared to participants with other functional bowel disorders or controls. Meals associated with abdominal pain contained on average increased excess fructose (0.31 g vs. 0.18 g, p < 0.05), sorbitol (0.27 g vs. 0.10 g, p < 0.01), and total FODMAP (3.46 g vs. 2.96 g, p < 0.05) compared to meals not associated with pain. Abdominal swelling was associated with increased sorbitol (0.33 g vs. 0.11 g, p < 0.01), and total FODMAP (3.26 g vs. 3.02 g, p < 0.05) consumption. Abdominal bloating was associated with increased galacto oligosaccharide consumption (0.18 g vs. 0.14 g, p < 0.05). Conclusion These findings support the role of FODMAP in post-prandial bowel symptom onset, however, the amount and type of FODMAP triggering symptoms vary between individuals. Future research should investigate the relationship between the effect of individual FODMAP consumption on post-prandial bowel symptoms for each subtype, the interaction of FODMAP with differing functional bowel disorders and whether longitudinally symptoms and dietary intake are stable.

Abstract
Sugar metabolism influences the quality of sweet corn (Zea mays var. saccharate Sturt) kernels, which is a major goal for maize breeding. In this study, the genome-wide transcriptomes from two supersweet corn cultivars (cv. Xuetian 7401 and Zhetian 11) with a nearly two-fold difference in kernel sugar content were carried out to explore the genes related to kernel sugar metabolism. In total, 45,748 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in kernels and 596 DEGs in leaves were identified. PsbS, photosynthetic system II subunit S, showed two isoforms with different expression levels in leaf tissue between two cultivars, indicating that this gene might influence sugar accumulation in the kernel. On the other hand, hexokinases and beta-glucosidase genes involved in glycolysis, starch and sucrose metabolism were found in developing kernels with a genome-wide transcriptome analysis of developing kernels, which might contribute to the overaccumulation of water-soluble polysaccharides and an increase in the sweetness in the kernels of Xuetian 7401. These results indicated that kernel sugar accumulation in sweet corn might be influenced by both photosynthesis efficiency and the sugar metabolism rate. Our study supplied a new insight for breeding new cultivars with high sugar content and laid the foundation for exploring the regulatory mechanisms of kernel sugar content in corn.

Abstract
Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) is an important industrial crop that produces large quantities of the dietary fiber inulin in its roots. Following inulin extraction, the bagasse is typically used as animal feed, but it contains numerous bioactive secondary metabolites with potential applications in healthcare and cosmetic products. Here we assessed the antimicrobial properties of chicory biomass pre-treated with various enzymes alone and in combination to release the bioactive compounds and increase their bioavailability. We found that pre-treatment significantly increased the antimicrobial activity of this industrial by-product, yielding an extract that inhibited typical skin pathogens in a cosmetic formula challenge test. We also evaluated the valorization of chicory biomass as a bioactive cosmetic ingredient. Economic feasibility was estimated by combining our experimental results with a conceptual techno-economic analysis. Our results suggest that chicory biomass can be utilized for the sustainable production of efficacious cosmetic ingredients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bile acid diarrhoea (BAD) causes chronic diarrhoea and is primarily treated pharmacologically. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of non-pharmacological therapies for evidence-based management of BAD in adults. METHODS A systematic review of the medical literature was performed from 1975 to 13 July 2021 to identify studies on diet, psychological, and exercise therapies that met diagnostic criteria for BAD in adults with diarrhoea. Effectiveness was judged by responder or improvement in diarrhoea at study endpoint according to each study's definition of diarrhoea. Therapeutic effect on abdominal pain and flatulence was also measured. Risk of bias was assessed using the Risk Of Bias In Non-Randomised Studies of Interventions tool. A narrative review was conducted using 'Synthesis Without Meta-analysis' guidance. Certainty of the evidence was assessed using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation. RESULTS Eight prospective cohort studies were identified on diet therapies from 2 weeks to over 2 years involving 192 patients. No psychological or exercise therapies were found. Carbohydrate modification (one study, n = 2) in primary BAD, and dietary fat intake reductions (five studies, n = 181) and an exclusive elemental diet therapy (two studies, n = 9) in secondary BAD, showed beneficial directions of effect on diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and flatulence. Risks of bias for each study and across studies for each therapy type were serious. Certainty of the evidence was very low for all outcomes. CONCLUSIONS No conclusions could be drawn on the effectiveness of diet, psychological, or exercise therapies on diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and flatulence for the management of BAD in adults. High-quality randomised controlled trials are needed.

Abstract
This review summarizes current knowledge on the role of low-FODMAP diet and gluten-free diet in functional abdominal bloating and distension, an emerging disorder of gut-brain interaction characterized by remarkable costs for healthcare systems and a significant impact on the patient's quality of life. Ingested food plays a key role in the pathophysiology of disorders of gut-brain interaction as up to 84% of patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) report food-triggered symptoms. Potential pathogenetic mechanisms of food-related symptoms in these patients are discussed, focusing on bloating and abdominal distension. These mechanisms provide the rationale for dietary treatment in patients with functional abdominal bloating and distension. The role of fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAPs) and gluten in functional abdominal bloating and distension is examined. Current literature evaluating the efficacy of the low-FODMAP diet and the gluten-free diet in abdominal bloating and distension is analyzed. Available evidence originates mainly from studies on patients with IBS, since clinical studies on selected cohorts of patients with only functional abdominal bloating and distension have been missing to date. Promising evidence on the potential efficacy of the low-FODMAP diet in functional abdominal bloating and distension is provided by the reduction of the bloating observed in patients with IBS. Regarding the gluten-free diet, there is insufficient evidence to recommend it to reduce bloating and abdominal distension. In conclusion, this review asserts the need for a close collaboration with experts in nutrition to optimize the management of these patients and reduce the risks associated with elimination diets.

Abstract
The 1H-NMR carbohydrates profiling was used to discriminate fruits from Rosaceae family in terms of botanical origin and harvest year. The classification was possible by application of multivariate data analysis, such as principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and Pearson analysis. Prior, a heat map was created based on 1H-NMR signals which offered an overview of the content of individual carbohydrates in plum, apricot, cherry and sour cherry, highlighting the similarities. Although, the PCA results were almost satisfactory, based only on carbohydrates signals, the LDA reached 94.39% and 100% classification of fruits according to their botanical origin and growing season, respectively. Additionally, a potential association with the relevant climatic data was explored by applying the Pearson analysis. These findings are intended to create an efficient NMR-based solution capable of differentiating fruit juices based on their basic sugar profile.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Institution of a diet low in fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may lead to inadequate fiber intake. This trial aimed to investigate the effects of supplementing specific fibers concomitantly with a low FODMAP diet on relevant clinical and physiological indices in symptomatic patients with IBS. METHODS A double-blind crossover trial was conducted in which 26 patients with IBS were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 low FODMAP diets differing only in total fiber content: control, 23 g/d; sugarcane bagasse, 33 g/d; or fiber combination (sugarcane bagasse with resistant starch), 45 g/d. Each diet lasted 14 days with most food provided and ≥21 days' washout between. Endpoints were assessed during baseline and dietary interventions. RESULTS From a median IBS Severity Scoring System total score at baseline of 305, all diets reduced median scores by >50 with no differences in rates of symptom response between the diets: control (57%), sugarcane bagasse (67%), fiber combination (48%) (P = .459). Stool output was ∼50% higher during the fiber-supplemented vs control diets (P < .001 for both). While there were no overall differences overall in stool characteristics, descriptors, and water content, or in gastrointestinal transit times, supplementation with sugarcane bagasse normalized both low stool water content and slow colonic transit from during the control diet. CONCLUSIONS Concomitant supplementation of fibers during initiation of a low FODMAP diet did not alter symptomatic response in patients with IBS but augmented stool bulk and normalized low stool water content and slow transit. Resistant starch did not exert additional symptomatic benefits over sugarcane bagasse alone. (Australia and New Zealand Clinical Trial Registry; Number, ACTRN12619000691145).

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS The 3-phase fermentable oligo-, di-, mono-saccharides, and polyols (FODMAP) diet has shown a high level of efficacy in irritable bowel syndrome, largely based on dietitian delivered education. However, access to dietitians can be limited, and challenges exist when applying the diet to a wide range of cultures, such as limited FODMAP analysis of local foods. This review aims to discuss ways to optimally use the FODMAP diet in practice in a wide range of cultures, directed at gastroenterologists from a dietitian's perspective. METHODS Recent literature was analysed via search databases including Medline, CINAHL, PubMed and Scopus. RESULTS The dietetic process involves detailed assessment and follow-up through the 3 stages of the FODMAP diet (restriction, re-introduction, and long-term maintenance). Emerging evidence suggests the diet can be delivered by other health professionals such as the gastroenterologist or nurse, but training on how to do so successfully would be needed. Self-guided approaches through use of technology or specialised food delivery services may be an alternative when dietitians are not available, but efficacy data is limited. Regardless of delivery mode, nutritional and psychological risks of the diet must be mitigated. Additionally, culturally appropriate education must be provided, with accommodations necessary when the FODMAP content of local foods are unknown. CONCLUSION While the diet has shown improved irritable bowel syndrome outcomes across studies, it is important to acknowledge the essential role of dietitians in implementing, tailoring, and managing the diet to achieve the best outcome for each individual.

Abstract
Sorbitol metabolism plays multiple roles in many plants, including energy and carbon enrichment, effective defence against various stresses and other emerging specific roles. The underlying mechanisms are, however, incompletely understood. This review provides the current state-of-the-art, highlights missing knowledge and poses several remaining questions. The basic properties of sugar alcohols are summarised and pathways of sorbitol metabolism, including biosynthesis, degradation and key enzymes are described. Sorbitol transport within the plant body is discussed and individual roles of sorbitol in different organs, specific cells or even cellular compartments, are elaborated, clarifying the critical importance of sorbitol allocation and distribution. In addition to plants that accumulate and transport significant quantities of sorbitol (usual producers), there are some that synthesize small amounts of sorbitol or only possess sorbitol metabolising enzymes (non-usual producers). Modern analytical methods have recently enabled large amounts of data to be acquired on this topic, although numerous uncertainties and questions remain. For a long time, it has been clear that enriching carbohydrate metabolism with a sorbitol branch improves plant fitness under stress. Nevertheless, this is probably valid only when appropriate growth and defence trade-offs are ensured. Information on the ectopic expression of sorbitol metabolism genes has contributed substantially to our understanding of the sorbitol roles and raises new questions regarding sorbitol signalling potential. We finally examine strategies in plants producing sorbitol compared with those producing mannitol. Providing an in-depth understanding of sugar alcohol metabolism is essential for the progress in plant physiology as well as in targeted, knowledge-based crop breeding.

Abstract
Agro-industrial wastes can be used to obtain high-value compounds rich in antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. This study aimed to compare different extraction techniques for the recovery of sugars, antioxidants, and antimicrobial compounds from brewer’s spent grain (BSG), blue agave bagasse (BAB), spoiled blackberries (BB), and raspberries (RB). Aqueous (AQ), enzymatic (E), chemical-enzymatic (CE), and hydroalcoholic (EOH) extractions were assessed, and sugars, phenolics, flavonoids, and anthocyanin contents were quantified. Antioxidant activity of the extracts was evaluated using the ABTS and DPPH assays, and antimicrobial activity was tested against three yeasts and six bacteria. The CE process gave the highest total and reducing sugars content for the four residues tested, and the highest antioxidant activity, phenolics, flavonoids and anthocyanin content for BAB and BSG. Regarding BB and RB, the best treatment to obtain total and reducing sugars and antioxidant activity with ABTS was CE; the highest content of anthocyanins, phenolic, flavonoids and antioxidant activity with DPPH was obtained with EOH treatment. CE extracts of BSG and RB showed the highest inhibition against the strains studied. Results show that BSG, BB, and RB can be a source of antioxidants and antimicrobial compounds for the food and pharmaceutical industries. Depending on the desired application and component of interest, one of the extraction techniques evaluated here could be used.

Abstract
A diet low in fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAPs) is a promising therapeutic approach to reduce gastrointestinal symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, a shift toward a more sustainable, healthy diet with higher inclusion of whole-grain cereals (i.e., wheat, rye, barley) and pulses, naturally rich in FODMAPs, poses a severe challenge for susceptible individuals. Dietary restriction of fermentable carbohydrates (commonly called the "low FODMAP diet") has received significant consideration. Hence, the development of functional low FODMAP products is emerging in food science and the food industry. In this review, we evaluate the most promising yet neglected (bio)-technological strategies adopted for modulating the FODMAP contents in complex food systems and the extent of their uptake in the global food market. We extensively investigated the global low FODMAP market, contrasted with the status quo in food science and discussed the key principles and concomitant challenges of targeted FODMAP reduction strategies. Powerful tools are available which are based either on the use of ingredients where FODMAPs have been physically removed (e.g., by membrane filtration) or biotechnologically reduced during the food processing, mediated by added enzymes, microbial enzymes during a fermentation process, and seed endogenous enzymes. However, <10% of the small market of functional products with a low FODMAP claim (total ∼800 products) used any of the targeted FODMAP reduction techniques. The global market is currently dominated by gluten-free products, which are naturally low in FODMAPs and characterized by inferior sensory attributes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Prospective trials evaluating efficacy of specific diet restriction in functional dyspepsia (FD) are scarce. We aimed to assess efficacy of low fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAP) diet in FD, compared with traditional dietary advice (TDA). METHODS In this prospective, single-blind trial, patients with FD (Rome IV) were randomized into low FODMAP diet (LFD) and TDA groups, for 4 weeks (phase I). In phase II (4-12 weeks), LFD group was advised systematic re-introduction of FODMAPs. Symptom severity and quality of life were assessed using "Short-Form Nepean Dyspepsia Index (SF-NDI)." Primary outcome was symptomatic response (symptom score reduction of ≥ 50%), at 4 weeks. Study was registered with CTRI (2019/06/019852). RESULTS Of 184 patients screened, 105 were randomized to LFD (n = 54) and TDA (n = 51) groups. At 4 weeks, both groups showed significant reduction in SF-NDI symptom scores compared with baseline, with no significant difference in inter-group response rates [LFD: 66.7% (36/54); TDA: 56.9% (29/51); P = 0.32]. On sub-group analysis, patients with postprandial distress syndrome or bloating had significantly better symptomatic response with LFD (P = 0.04). SF-NDI quality of life scores improved significantly in both groups. On multivariate analysis, factors predicting response to LFD were bloating and male gender. Incidences of adverse events (minor) were similar in both groups. CONCLUSIONS In patients with FD, LFD and TDA lead to significant symptomatic and quality of life improvement. Patients with postprandial distress syndrome or bloating respond significantly better to LFD. Therefore, dietary advice for FD should be individualized according to FD subtype.

Abstract
A primary criticism of organic agriculture is its lower yield and nutritional quality compared to conventional systems. Nutritionally, dry pea (Pisum sativum L.) is a rich source of low digestible carbohydrates, protein, and micronutrients. This study aimed to evaluate dry pea cultivars and advanced breeding lines using on-farm field selections to inform the development of biofortified organic cultivars with increased yield and nutritional quality. A total of 44 dry pea entries were grown in two USDA-certified organic on-farm locations in South Carolina (SC), United States of America (USA) for two years. Seed yield and protein for dry pea ranged from 61 to 3833 kg ha-1 and 12.6 to 34.2 g/100 g, respectively, with low heritability estimates. Total prebiotic carbohydrate concentration ranged from 14.7 to 26.6 g/100 g. A 100-g serving of organic dry pea provides 73.5 to 133% of the recommended daily allowance (%RDA) of prebiotic carbohydrates. Heritability estimates for individual prebiotic carbohydrates ranged from 0.27 to 0.82. Organic dry peas are rich in minerals [iron (Fe): 1.9-26.2 mg/100 g; zinc (Zn): 1.1-7.5 mg/100 g] and have low to moderate concentrations of phytic acid (PA:18.8-516 mg/100 g). The significant cultivar, location, and year effects were evident for grain yield, thousand seed weight (1000-seed weight), and protein, but results for other nutritional traits varied with genotype, environment, and interactions. "AAC Carver," "Jetset," and "Mystique" were the best-adapted cultivars with high yield, and "CDC Striker," "Fiddle," and "Hampton" had the highest protein concentration. These cultivars are the best performing cultivars that should be incorporated into organic dry pea breeding programs to develop cultivars suitable for organic production. In conclusion, organic dry pea has potential as a winter cash crop in southern climates. Still, it will require selecting diverse genetic material and location sourcing to develop improved cultivars with a higher yield, disease resistance, and nutritional quality.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Although irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders presented to gastroenterologists, therapeutic strategies are not yet well-established. Accordingly, we conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, clinical trial to evaluate the possible superiority of adding glutamine supplement to low fermentable oligo- di- monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAP) diet in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Methods: Eligible adults were randomized to receive a low FODMAP diet either with glutamine (15 g/day) or a placebo for 6 weeks. The primary endpoint was a significant reduction in IBS-symptom severity score (IBS-SSS). Secondary endpoints were changes in IBS symptoms, stool frequency, consistency, and quality of life. Results: The study group enrolled 50 patients, among which 22 participants from each group completed the study protocol. The glutamine group had significant changes in total IBS-severity score, dissatisfaction of bowel habit and interference with community function (58% reduction; P < 0.001, 57% reduction; P < 0.001, 51% reduction; P = 0.043, respectively). Improvement in IBS-severity score of more than 45% was observed in 22 of 25 participants (88%) in the glutamine group, while it was only 15 of 25 participants (60%) in the control group (p = 0.015). No serious adverse events were observed. Conclusions: Our findings indicated the superiority of adding glutamine supplementation to a low FODMAP diet in amelioration of IBS symptoms while confirming the beneficial effects of a low FODMAP diet in IBS management.

Abstract
Accurate monitoring of sugar levels is essential for many fields from food industry to human health. Here, we developed FRET-based dual chromophore sensors for saccharides that form oxazolidine boronate and may be employed as a noninvasive method for monitoring of sugar levels in biological fluids, namely, urine. The saccharide-binding properties of the sensors were studied using fluorescence spectroscopy and utilized in the determination of saccharides in a high-throughput manner. Here, two fluorescent sensors were successful in the classification of nine different monosaccharides and disaccharides with 100% correct classification. Furthermore, the dual chromophore self-assembled sensors were successfully utilized for the quantitative determination of important carbohydrates such as glucose in the presence of competitive saccharides (fructose) and in complex media (urine) without sample pretreatment. The present fluorescent sensors allow for quantification of glucose in a concentration range of 0-60 mM, which matches the concentration range of frequently used urinalysis test strips.

Abstract
In this study, a novel electrochemical sensor for simultaneous detection of Pb(II) and Cu(II) was constructed by using Zn/Ni-ZIF-8/XC-72/Nafion hybrid material as electrode surface modifier. XRD, FT-IR, XPS and SEM were used to study the crystal structure, functional groups, element types and morphologies of the prepared materials. The electrochemical performance of the Zn/Ni-ZIF-8/XC-72/Nafion/GCE sensor were investigated by CV, EIS and DPV. In addition, the effects of various conditions including pH, the type of buffer and the ratio of Zn/Ni-ZIF-8 to XC-72 were also explored for the determination of Pb(II) and Cu(II). Under the optimum conditions, the constructed sensor exhibited outstanding linear response of Pb(II) (0.794-39.6 ppm) and Cu(II) (0.397-19.9 ppm) with detection limits of 0.0150 and 0.0096 ppm, respectively. Finally, the fabricated sensor was further used to detect Pb(II) and Cu(II) in real samples, and the satisfactory recovery was obtained.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides and Monosaccharides And Polyols (FODMAPs) have been shown to be involved in gastrointestinal disorders. In view of their pro-inflammatory potential and their interactions with the gut microbiota, their contribution to the etiology of other chronic diseases such as cancer has been postulated. However, no epidemiological study has investigated this hypothesis so far. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to investigate the associations between FODMAP intake (total and by type) and cancer risk (overall, breast, prostate and colorectal) in a large prospective cohort. DESIGN The study was based on the NutriNet-Santé cohort (2009-2020); 104,909 adult participants without cancer at baseline were included in our analyses (median follow-up time = 7.7y, 78.7% women, mean age at baseline 42.1y (SD = 14.5)). Baseline dietary intakes were obtained from repeated 24h-dietary records linked to a detailed food composition table. Associations between FODMAP intake (expressed in quintiles, Q) and cancer risks were assessed by Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for a large range of lifestyle, sociodemographic and anthropometric variables. RESULTS Total FODMAP intake was associated with increased overall cancer risk (n = 3374 incident cases, HR for sex-specific Quintile 5 versus Quintile 1: 1.21; 95%CI: 1.02, 1.44; P-trend = 0.04). In particular, oligosaccharides were associated with cancer risk: a trend was observed for overall cancer (HR Q5 vs. Q1: 1.10; 95%CI: 0.97, 1.25; P-trend = 0.04) and colorectal cancer (n = 272, HR Q5 vs. Q1: 1.78; 95%CI: 1.13-2.79; P-trend = 0.02). CONCLUSION Results from this large population-based study on French adults from the NutriNet-Santé cohort show a significant association between FODMAP intake and the risk of cancer development. Further epidemiological and experimental studies are needed to confirm these results and provide data on the potential underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Background A low–fermentable oligosaccharide, disaccharide, monosaccharide, and polyol (FODMAP) diet (LFD) appeared to improve gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). However, evidence of its efficacy in Asia remains scarce. Objectives This study aims to investigate the clinical effectiveness of LFD intervention among Asian IBS patients and barriers to its adherence. Methods Patients with IBS who were instructed to follow LFD by dietitians at a tertiary hospital in Singapore between July 2013 and December 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Severity scores of 19 gastrointestinal symptoms were recorded using an 11-point rating scale (0 = “no symptoms,” 10 = “extremely severe”) pre- and post-LFD intervention. Adherence to LFD was assessed based on patients’ diet history and a high-FODMAP food checklist. Results Eighty-two patients with a median follow-up of 5.8 weeks were investigated. The LFD adherence rate was 61.0% ( n = 50). Overall, statistically significant improvement was observed in 14 of 19 gastrointestinal symptoms (median difference = −2.0 to −0.5, p < .05). The proportion of patients who had improvement in 10 individual symptoms (defined as ≥1 point reduction in symptom severity rating) was significantly higher in LFD-adherent patients (67.5%–82.4%) than that of the non-adherent group (27.8%–55.0%). Reasons reported for non-adherence included “limited availability of low-FODMAP alternatives” ( n = 9), “limited understanding of LFD” ( n = 7), and “perceived lack of benefit” ( n = 4). Conclusions LFD intervention improved gastrointestinal symptoms in a cohort of Asian IBS patients. Limited access to low-FODMAP alternatives was the main barrier to adherence.

Abstract
Fruits are the seed-bearing product of plants and have considerable nutritional importance in the human diet. The consumption of fruits is among the dietary strategies recommended for constipation due to its potential effects on the gut microbiota and gut motility. Dietary fiber from fruits has been the subject of research on the impact on gut microbiota, gut motility and constipation, however, fruits also contain other components that impact the intestinal luminal environment that may impact these outcomes including sorbitol and (poly)phenols. This review aims to explore the mechanisms of action and effectiveness of fruits and fruit products on the gut microbiota, gut motility and constipation, with a focus on fiber, sorbitol and (poly)phenols. In vitro, animal and human studies investigating the effects of fruits on gut motility and gut microbiota were sought through electronic database searches, hand searching and consulting with experts. Various fruits have been shown to modify the microbiota in human studies including blueberry powder (lactobacilli, bifidobacteria), prunes (bifidobacteria), kiwi fruit (Bacteroides, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii) and raisins (Ruminococcus, F. prausnitzii). Prunes, raisins and apple fiber isolate have been shown to increase fecal weight in humans, whilst kiwifruit to increase small bowel and fecal water content. Apple fiber isolate, kiwifruit, fig paste, and orange extract have been shown to reduce gut transit time, while prunes have not. There is limited evidence on which fruit components play a predominant role in regulating gut motility and constipation, or whether a synergy of multiple components is responsible for such effects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine associations between diet and risk of developing gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD). DESIGN Prospective cohort with a median follow-up of 15·8 years. Baseline diet was measured using a FFQ. GERD was defined as self-reported current or history of daily heartburn or acid regurgitation beginning at least 2 years after baseline. Sex-specific logistic regressions were performed to estimate OR for GERD associated with diet quality scores and intakes of nutrients, food groups and individual foods and beverages. The effect of substituting saturated fat for monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fat on GERD risk was examined. SETTING Melbourne, Australia. PARTICIPANTS A cohort of 20 926 participants (62 % women) aged 40-59 years at recruitment between 1990 and 1994. RESULTS For men, total fat intake was associated with increased risk of GERD (OR 1·05 per 5 g/d; 95 % CI 1·01, 1·09; P = 0·016), whereas total carbohydrate (OR 0·89 per 30 g/d; 95 % CI 0·82, 0·98; P = 0·010) and starch intakes (OR 0·84 per 30 g/d; 95 % CI 0·75, 0·94; P = 0·005) were associated with reduced risk. Nutrients were not associated with risk for women. For both sexes, substituting saturated fat for polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fat did not change risk. For both sexes, fish, chicken, cruciferous vegetables and carbonated beverages were associated with increased risk, whereas total fruit and citrus were associated with reduced risk. No association was observed with diet quality scores. CONCLUSIONS Diet is a possible risk factor for GERD, but food considered as triggers of GERD symptoms might not necessarily contribute to disease development. Potential differential associations for men and women warrant further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAPs) are increasingly studied because they are suspected unfavorably to impact health (irritable bowel syndrome in particular). However, little is known about FODMAP intake in the general population, or which groups are more likely to consume them, because their intakes are usually assessed in inpatient settings. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to describe FODMAP consumption in a large French cohort and its association with sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics. METHODS This cross-sectional study described FODMAP intakes in 109,362 volunteers (78.0% female, mean age 43.8 ± 14.7 y) from the French NutriNet-Santé cohort, using an ad hoc FODMAP composition table. Associations between FODMAP intakes and sociodemographic characteristics were investigated using χ2 tests or Kruskal-Wallis tests according to the qualitative or quantitative status of the variable, and multinomial logistic regressions were performed after adjusting for energy intake in sensitivity analyses. Eligible participants had completed ≥3 detailed 24-h food records. RESULTS We observed a mean intake of 18.9 ± 9.5 g/d FODMAPs in this French cohort, and 11.7% of participants had intakes <9 g/d (i.e., low-FODMAP diets). Participants with FODMAP intakes <9 g/d were more likely to have lower caloric intakes (Δ = 383 kcal/d compared with participants with FODMAP intakes ≥16 g/d), to be smokers, to have lower incomes, and to have lower levels of physical activity. Total FODMAPs accounted for a mean intake of 18.9 ± 9.5 g/d, which was 3.7 ± 2.0% of total energy intake. The highest intake of FODMAPs was represented by lactose followed by excess fructose, fructans, polyols, and galacto-oligo-saccharides. CONCLUSIONS FODMAP consumption by a large sample of adults from the general population is ∼19 g/d, with half of the population having a FODMAP intake >16 g/d.This trial was registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03335644.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The literature is limited regarding the prevalence of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) in Central America, and the role of dietary factors. METHODS The Rome IV diagnostic questionnaire and National Cancer Institute Diet History questionnaire were administered in one-on-one interviews to a distributed cross section of the general adult population of Western Honduras. Our aim was to estimate prevalence of common FGIDs and symptoms and their relationships to dietary habits. RESULTS In total, 815 subjects were interviewed, of whom 151 fulfilled criteria for an FGID (18.5%). Gastroduodenal FGIDs were noted in 9.4%, with epigastric pain syndrome (EPS) more common than postprandial distress syndrome, 8.5% versus 1.6%. Among bowel disorders, functional abdominal bloating (FAB) was most prevalent (6.3%), followed by irritable bowel syndrome (3.6%), functional diarrhea (FDr; 3.4%), and functional constipation (1.1%). A significant inverse association was noted between regular bean intake and any FGID (OR 0.41, 95% CI 0.27-0.63), driven by IBS and FDr. Vegetable consumption was associated with lower prevalence of functional diarrhea (OR 0.12; 95% CI 0.04-0.35) and any diarrheal disorder (OR 0.11; 95% CI 0.04-0.31). Subjects with a median daily intake of ≥ 4 corn tortillas had 1.75 (95% CI 1.22-2.50) times the odds of having any FGID. CONCLUSIONS FGIDs were common in this rural low-resource setting in Central America, with an intriguing distribution of specific FGIDs. EPS and FAB were common, but IBS was not. Local dietary factors were associated with specific FGIDs, suggesting that diet may play a role in global variations of FGIDs.
