Absorption and fluorescence spectra of poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) oligomers: an ab initio simulation

Absorption spectra of p-nitroaniline derivatives: charge transfer effects and the role of substituents

CONTEXT

Push-pull compounds are model systems and have numerous applications. By changing their substituents, properties are modified and new molecules for different applications can be designed. The work investigates the gas-phase electronic absorption spectra of 15 derivatives of push-pull para-nitroaniline (pNA). This molecule has applications in pharmaceuticals, azo dyes, corrosion inhibitors, and optoelectronics. Both electron-donor and electron-withdrawing groups were investigated. Employing machine learning-derived Hammett's constants σm, σm0, σR, and σI, correlations between substituents and electronic properties were obtained. Overall, the σm0 constants presented the best correlation with HOMO and LUMO energies, whereas the σR constants best agreed with the transition energy of the first band and HOMO-LUMO energy gap. Electron-donors, which have lower σR values, redshift the absorption spectrum and reduce the HOMO-LUMO energy gap. Conversely, electron-withdrawing groups (higher σR's) blueshift the spectrum and increase the energy gap. The second band maximum energies, studied here for the first time, showed no correlation with σ but tended to increase with σ. A comprehensive charge transfer (CT) analysis of the main transition of all systems was also carried out. We found that donors (lower σ's) slightly enhance the CT character of the unsubstituted pNA, whereas acceptors (higher σ's) decrease it, leading to increased local excitations within the aromatic ring. The overall CT variation is not large, except for pNA-SO2H, which considerably decreases the total CT value. We found that the strong electron donors pNA-OH, pNA-OCH3, and pNA-NH2, which have the smallest HOMO-LUMO energy gaps and lowest σ's, have potential for optoelectronic applications. The results show that none of the studied molecules is fluorescent in the gas phase. However, pNA-NH2 and pNA-COOH in cyclohexane and water reveal fluorescence upon solvation.

METHODS

We investigated theoretically employing the second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction (ADC(2)) ab initio wave function and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) the gas-phase electronic absorption spectra of 15 derivatives of p-nitroaniline (pNA). The investigated substituents include both electron-donor (C6H5, CCH, CH3, NH2, OCH3, and OH,) and electron-withdrawing (Br, CCl3, CF3, Cl, CN, COOH, F, NO2, and SO2H) substituents.

The OpenMolcas Web: A Community-Driven Approach to Advancing Computational Chemistry

The developments of the open-source OpenMolcas chemistry software environment since spring 2020 are described, with a focus on novel functionalities accessible in the stable branch of the package or via interfaces with other packages. These developments span a wide range of topics in computational chemistry and are presented in thematic sections: electronic structure theory, electronic spectroscopy simulations, analytic gradients and molecular structure optimizations, ab initio molecular dynamics, and other new features. This report offers an overview of the chemical phenomena and processes OpenMolcas can address, while showing that OpenMolcas is an attractive platform for state-of-the-art atomistic computer simulations.

Comparison among several vibronic coupling methods

A comparison of four approaches to account the vibronic coupling in photoabsorption is performed. The methods considered are nuclear ensemble (NE), direct vibronic coupling (DVC), adiabatic Hessian (AH), and vertical gradient (VG). The case study is the symmetry-forbidden [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]A[Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]A[Formula: see text] (n [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]) transition in formaldehyde. Being forbidden in the equilibrium geometry, this transition is entirely induced by vibronic coupling and constitutes an appropriate case to study the performance of different methods. From DVC, it is found that mode 1 (C=O out-of-plane bending) is the most inducing, followed by mode 6 (in-plane C-H asymmetric stretching) and finally by mode 2 (in-plane C-H asymmetric bending). We were able to correlate 17 out of 20 structures obtained from NE with these modes, showing that these two methods, although different in principle, give comparable results. The simulated spectra were obtained for all methods and compared, and each one has its own advantage. In what concerns the transition studied, NE gives the best description of the spectrum, DVC is the only one that easily gives an absolute value for OOS, and AH and VG are the computationally less expensive methods. From the latter two, VG is the less demanding on computational grounds, since it does not require the excited state Hessian.

Reconstruction of Nuclear Ensemble Approach Electronic Spectra Using Probabilistic Machine Learning

The theoretical prediction of molecular electronic spectra by means of quantum mechanical (QM) computations is fundamental to gain a deep insight into many photophysical and photochemical processes. A computational strategy that is attracting significant attention is the so-called Nuclear Ensemble Approach (NEA), that relies on generating a representative ensemble of nuclear geometries around the equilibrium structure and computing the vertical excitation energies (ΔE) and oscillator strengths (f) and phenomenologically broadening each transition with a line-shaped function with empirical full-width δ. Frequently, the choice of δ is carried out by visually finding the trade-off between artificial vibronic features (small δ) and over-smoothing of electronic signatures (large δ). Nevertheless, this approach is not satisfactory, as it relies on a subjective perception and may lead to spectral inaccuracies overall when the number of sampled configurations is limited due to an excessive computational burden (high-level QM methods, complex systems, solvent effects, etc.). In this work, we have developed and tested a new approach to reconstruct NEA spectra, dubbed GMM-NEA, based on the use of Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs), a probabilistic machine learning algorithm, that circumvents the phenomenological broadening assumption and, in turn, the use of δ altogether. We show that GMM-NEA systematically outperforms other data-driven models to automatically select δ overall for small datasets. In addition, we report the use of an algorithm to detect anomalous QM computations (outliers) that can affect the overall shape and uncertainty of the NEA spectra. Finally, we apply GMM-NEA to predict the photolysis rate for HgBrOOH, a compound involved in Earth's atmospheric chemistry.

Stacking Interactions of Poly Para-Phenylene Vinylene Oligomers with Graphene and Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes: A Molecular Dynamics Approach

This study is meant to address the understanding of the interactions between poly para-phenylene vinylene (PPV) oligomers, graphene and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT). To this end, the binding energies of the PPV oligomers with graphene and SWCNTs were investigated. Calculations are performed and the parameters related to van der Waal vdW interactions are discussed to achieve and confirm the crystallization of oligomers of PPV into herringbone (HB) structure arrangement, which is known to be the most stable conformation at 300 K. Finally, the interfacial interactions between crystal PPV, graphene and SWCNT are carried out. According to the results, the intramolecular potential energies of PPV chains are found to increase linearly with each extending PPV monomer unit by approximately 50 kcal/mol. Moreover, the interfacial interaction properties analysis using radial distribution functions (RDFs) for PPV-graphene and PPV-SWCNT show significant disordering of the arrangement of molecules, which is more pronounced for PPV-SWCNT than that in PPV-graphene. The radius of gyration (Rg) profiles show a net decrease of ∼−0.8, for PPV-graphene with different surface coverage, and, a net increase of ∼+0.6, for PPV-SWCNT; meaning that, the binding between PPV-graphene is much stronger than with PPV-SWCNT.

High-level Ab Initio Absorption Spectra Simulations of Neutral, Anionic and Neutral+ Chromophore of Green Fluorescence Protein Chromophore Models in Gas Phase and Solution

Semiclassical ab initio simulations of the absorption spectra of neutral and anionic p-hydroxybenzylidene-2,3-dimethylimidazolinone (p-HBDI), a model chromophore of green fluorescent protein (GFP) and of a positively charged neutral (N+)-HBDI chromophore model, were performed in gas phase with the resolution-of-identity algebraic diagrammatic construction through second-order (RI-ADC(2)) method. The calculated absorption spectra in gas phase are composed of one band centered at 3.51 eV (HBDI), 2.50 eV (HBDI^- ) and 3.02 eV ((N+)-HBDI) owing to the absorption of the first ¹ ππ* transition. Band maxima are redshifted by ~0.1 eV with respect to the corresponding vertical energies. The COSMO-RI-ADC(2) calculations of the first vertical excitation energy of HBDI, HBDI^- and (N+)-HBDI forms in polar solution including microsolvation simulate the observed solvent redshift for neutral HBDI and the solvent blueshift of the HBDI^- and (N+)-HBDI forms. The state-specific solvation approach applied to TDDFT calculations reproduced the experimental solvent shifts for the three HBDI forms, demonstrating a more accurate theoretical description as compared to the linear-response TDDFT approach.

Covalent Functionalization of Black Phosphorus from First-Principles

The chemical functionalization is proven to be an effective and controllable approach to modify the properties of black phosphorus (BP), and improve the air-stability of BP and its nanoelectronic applications [Nat. Chem., 2016, 8, 597]. However, covalent functionalization of BP and related properties are poorly understood. Here we present a theoretical investigation on the electronic structure and transport property of chemically modified BP. Our calculations reveal that the molecule modification generates a rather flat energy band within the bandgap, which leads to a reduced hole mobility of BP. Alternatively, we propose to use polymers bonded to BP surface, aiming at a balance between functionality and carrier mobility. The polymer-BP composites preserve both electron and hole mobility of pristine BP. Meanwhile, the stability of polymer-BP composites in ambient condition is enhanced as well.

New insights into the vibrational and optical signatures of trans-stilbene via integrated experimental and quantum mechanical approaches

The structure, spectroscopic parameters and optical properties of stilbene have been investigated by a computational protocol including suitable treatment of anharmonic contributions together with new experimental results.

Assessment of Approximate Coupled-Cluster and Algebraic-Diagrammatic-Construction Methods for Ground- and Excited-State Reaction Paths and the Conical-Intersection Seam of a Retinal-Chromophore Model

As a minimal model of the chromophore of rhodopsin proteins, the penta-2,4-dieniminium cation (PSB3) poses a challenging test system for the assessment of electronic-structure methods for the exploration of ground- and excited-state potential-energy surfaces, the topography of conical intersections, and the dimensionality (topology) of the branching space. Herein, we report on the performance of the approximate linear-response coupled-cluster method of second order (CC2) and the algebraic-diagrammatic-construction scheme of the polarization propagator of second and third orders (ADC(2) and ADC(3)). For the ADC(2) method, we considered both the strict and extended variants (ADC(2)-s and ADC(2)-x). For both CC2 and ADC methods, we also tested the spin-component-scaled (SCS) and spin-opposite-scaled (SOS) variants. We have explored several ground- and excited-state reaction paths, a circular path centered around the S1/S0 surface crossing, and a 2D scan of the potential-energy surfaces along the branching space. We find that the CC2 and ADC methods yield a different dimensionality of the intersection space. While the ADC methods yield a linear intersection topology, we find a conical intersection topology for the CC2 method. We present computational evidence showing that the linear-response CC2 method yields a surface crossing between the reference state and the first response state featuring characteristics that are expected for a true conical intersection. Finally, we test the performance of these methods for the approximate geometry optimization of the S1/S0 minimum-energy conical intersection and compare the geometries with available data from multireference methods. The present study provides new insight into the performance of linear-response CC2 and polarization-propagator ADC methods for molecular electronic spectroscopy and applications in computational photochemistry.
