Photoswitchable Molecular Rings for Solar-Thermal Energy Storage

Multichromophoric photoswitches for solar energy storage: from azobenzene to norbornadiene, and MOST things in between

The ever-increasing global demands for energy supply and storage have led to numerous research efforts into finding and developing renewable energy technologies. Molecular solar thermal energy storage (MOST) systems utilise molecular photoswitches that can be isomerized to a metastable high-energy state upon solar irradiation. These high-energy isomers can then be thermally or catalytically converted back to their original state, releasing the stored energy as heat on-demand, offering a means of emission-free energy storage from a closed system, often from only organic materials. In this context, multichromophoric systems which incorporate two or more photochromic units may offer additional functionality over monosubstituted analogues, due to their potential to access multiple states as well as having more attractive physical properties. The extended conjugation offered by these systems can lead to a red shift in the absorption profile and hence a better overlap with the solar spectrum. Additionally, the multichromophoric design may lead to increased energy storage densities due to some of the molecular weight being 'shared' across several energy storage units. This review provides an overview and analysis of multichromophoric photoswitches incorporating the norbornadiene/quadricyclane (NBD/QC) couple, azobenzene (AZB), dihydroazulene (DHA) and diarylethene (DAE) systems, in the context of energy storage applications. Mixed systems, where two or more different chromophores are linked together in one molecule, are also discussed, as well as limitations such as the loss of photochromism due to inner filter effects or self-quenching, and how these challenges may be overcome in future designs of multichromophoric systems.

Investigation of Solvent Effects on the Molecular Energy Storage and Optical Properties of Bicyclooctadiene/Tetracyclooctane Photoswitches

In this paper, we investigate the effects of solvation on the solar energy storage properties of bicyclooctadiene/tetracyclooctane (BOD/TCO) photoswitches. The solvent effects on the thermochemical and optical properties are studied in cyclohexane, toluene, dichloromethane, ethanol, acetonitrile, and a vacuum using density functional theory and coupled cluster theory. Our results show that the energy storage capacity of the BOD/TCO system increases as the solvent polarity increases, and the change is more significant with an unsubstituted system. The energy storage capacity of the substituted system is not dependent on the polarity of the solvent. As the solvent polarity increases, the absorption peaks shift away from each other and the absorption intensities increase. Overall, the solvents improve the performance of the optical properties and the energy storage capacities of the BOD/TCO molecular solar thermal systems.

Multiconfigurational photodynamics simulations reveal the mechanism of photodecarbonylations of cyclopropenones in explicit aqueous environments

Gas-evolving photochemical reactions use light and mild conditions to access strained organic compounds irreversibly. Cyclopropenones are a class of light-responsive molecules used in bioorthogonal photoclick reactions; their excited-state decarbonylation reaction mechanisms are misunderstood due to their ultrafast (<100 femtosecond) lifetimes. We have combined multiconfigurational quantum mechanical (QM) calculations and non-adiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) simulations to uncover the excited-state mechanism of cyclopropenone and a photoprotected cyclooctyne-(COT)-precursor in gaseous and explicit aqueous environments. We explore the role of H-bonding with fully quantum mechanical explicitly solvated NAMD simulations for the decarbonylation reaction. The cyclopropenones pass through asynchronous conical intersections and have dynamically concerted photodecarbonylation mechanisms. The COT-precursor has a higher quantum yield of 55% than cyclopropenone (28%) because these trajectories prefer to break a σCC bond to avoid the strained trans-cyclooctene geometries. Our solvated simulations show an increased quantum yield (58%) for the systems studied here.

Computational investigation of photoswitch conjugates for molecular solar energy storage

Solar energy conversion and storage are vital for combating climate change. Molecular solar thermal systems offer a promising solution, where energy is stored in molecular compounds. This study investigates dyad molecular photoswitches by combining bicyclooctadiene/tetracyclooctane and dihydroazulene/vinylheptafulvene systems with phenyl and cyano groups. Density functional theory calculations were employed to determine molecular properties and consider solvation effects in toluene and dichloromethane. The results show that the combined systems have a predicted storage energy of up to 206.14 kJ mol-1 and an absorption peak at 390.26 nm with appreciable intensity. These dyad photoswitches exhibit favorable properties for molecular solar thermal storage and other applications. A comparison with individual photoswitches reveals advantages and disadvantages. The most effective conjugate has a slightly lower storage density than an equal mixture of individual systems, but it demonstrates better absorption characteristics, with improved overlap with the solar spectrum and higher absorption intensity. These findings contribute to the understanding of dyad molecular photoswitches, showcasing their potential for advanced energy storage and conversion technologies.

Photoresponsive Carbon-Azobenzene Hybrids: A Promising Material for Energy Devices

Advancements in renewable energy technology have been a hot topic in the field of photoresponsive materials for a sustainable community. Organic compounds that function as photoswitches is being researched and developed for use in a variety of energy storage systems. Azobenzene photoswitches can be used to store and release solar energy in solar thermal fuels. This review draws out the significance of azobenzene as photoswitches and its recent advances in solar thermal fuels. The recent developments of nano carbon templated azobenzene, their interactions and the effect of substituents are highlighted. The review also introduces their applications in solar thermal fuels and concludes with the challenges and future scope of the material. The advancements of solar thermal fuels with cost effective and desired optimal properties can be explored by scientists and engineers from different technological backgrounds.

Ultrafast Excited State Aromatization in Dihydroazulene

Excited-state aromatization dynamics in the photochemical ring opening of dihydroazulene (DHA) is investigated by nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations in connection with the mixed-reference spin-flip (MRSF)-TDDFT method. It is found that, in the main reaction channel, the ring opening occurs in the excited state in a sequence of steps with increasing aromaticity. The first stage lasting ca. 200 fs produces an 8π semiaromatic S₁ minimum (S_1, min) through an ultrafast damped bond length alternation (BLA) movement synchronized with a partial planarization of the cycloheptatriene ring. An additional ca. 200 fs are required to gain the vibrational energy needed to overcome a ring-opening transition state characterized by an enhanced Baird aromaticity. Unlike other BLA motions of ππ* state, it was shown that their damping is a characteristic feature of aromatic bond-equalization process. In addition, some minor channels of the reaction have also been discovered, where noticeably higher barriers of the S₁ non/antiaromatic transition structures must be surmounted. These anti-Baird channels led to reformation of DHA or other closed-ring products. The observed competition between the Baird and anti-Baird channels suggests that the quantum yield of photochemical products can be controllable by tipping their balance. Hence, here we suggest including the concept of anti-Baird, which would expand the applicability of Baird rule to much broader situations.

Azobenzene-Based Solar Thermal Fuels: A Review

The energy storage mechanism of azobenzene is based on the transformation of molecular cis and trans isomerization, while NBD/QC, DHA/VHF, and fulvalene dimetal complexes realize the energy storage function by changing the molecular structure. Acting as "molecular batteries," they can exhibit excellent charging and discharging behavior by converting between trans and cis isomers or changing molecular structure upon absorption of ultraviolet light. Key properties determining the performance of STFs are stored energy, energy density, half-life, and solar energy conversion efficiency. This review is aiming to provide a comprehensive and authoritative overview on the recent advancements of azobenzene molecular photoswitch system in STFs fields, including derivatives and carbon nano-templates, which is emphasized for its attractive performance. Although the energy storage performance of Azo-STFs has already reached the level of commercial lithium batteries, the cycling capability and controllable release of energy still need to be further explored. For this, some potential solutions to the cycle performance are proposed, and the methods of azobenzene controllable energy release are summarized. Moreover, energy stored by STFs can be released in the form of mechanical energy, which in turn can also promote the release of thermal energy from STFs, implying that there could be a relationship between mechanical and thermal energy in Azo-STFs, providing a potential direction for further research on Azo-STFs.

Electric Properties of Photochromic Molecules Physisorbed on Silver and Copper Nanoparticles

This paper investigates the electric properties of the photochromic dihydroazulene/vinylheptafulvene system as it is physisorbed onto silver and copper nanoparticles. Our focus is on how the polarizability and hyperpolarizability of the dihydroazulene, s-cis-vinylheptafulvene, and s-trans-vinylheptafulvene molecules depend on molecular orientation with respect to the nanoparticles, the molecule-cluster separation, and the type of nanoparticle. The computational approach utilizes a combined quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical method in which the molecules are treated quantum mechanically while the nanoparticles are treated with a simpler classical method. The molecules are described with density functional theory. The electric properties are calculated using response theory utilizing the long-range-corrected functional CAM-B3LYP and the correlation consistent basis set aug-cc-pVDZ. The atoms of the nanoparticles are represented using atomic polarizabilities. The interactions between the nanoparticles and the molecular systems are calculated using a polarizable embedding scheme after which the molecular properties are calculated with time-dependent density functional theory. The results show that the electric properties are indeed affected by the presence of the nanoparticles. It is also clear that it is the hyperpolarizabilities that change the most while the polarizabilities are less affected. Furthermore, the influence of the nanoparticles on the molecules depends heavily on the relative molecular orientation with respect to the nanoparticles and molecular conformation. Finally, it is observed that a copper nanoparticle has a larger influence on the molecular systems than a silver nanoparticle.

Prospects of Improving Molecular Solar Energy Storage of the Norbornadiene/Quadricyclane System through Bridgehead Modifications

We have investigated novel bicyclic diene molecular solar thermal energy storage systems that presently are the ones with the highest predicted energy density. Using a variety of different ab initio quantum chemical methods, we report storage energies, absorption spectra, and reaction barriers for the release of stored energy for a series of bicyclic dienes. The bicyclic dienes are all constructed by modifying the bridgehead of the well-known norbornadiene/quadricyclane (NBD/QC) system. In conclusion, we find it promising that it is possible to significantly amplify the storage energy of the NBD/QC system without seriously compromising other crucial properties by introducing simple modifications to the bridgehead.

A Study of Wave Confinement and Optical Force in Polydimethlysiloxane-Arylazopyrazole Composite for Photonic Applications

A refractive index of dielectrics was modified by several methods and was known to have direct influence on optical forces in nanophotonic structures. The present contribution shows that isomerization of photoswitching molecules can be used to regulate refractive index of dielectrics in-situ. In particular, spectroscopic study of a polydimethylsiloxane-arylazopyrazole (PDMS-AAP) composite revealed that refractive index of the composite shifts from 2.0 to 1.65 in trans and cis states, respectively, of the embedded AAP. Based on this, a proposition is made for a waveguide structure, in which external UV/Vis source reversibly regulates the conformation of the PDMS-AAP core. Computational study is performed using Maxwell's equations on buried waveguide structure. The simulation, implemented in PYTHON, sequentially utilizes empirical refractive indices of the composite in the isomeric states in lieu of regulation by a source. The simulation revealed highly confined wave propagations for injected signals of 340 and 450 nm wavelengths. It is observed that the cis state suppresses higher order mode when propagating UV wavelength but allows it for visible light. This modal tuning demonstrated that single mode can be selectively excited with appropriate waveguide dimensions. Further impact of the tuning is seen in the optical force between waveguide pair where the forces shift between attractive and repulsive in relation to the isomeric state of the PDMS-AAP core. These effects which stem from the adjustment of refractive index by photoisomerization suggests that in-situ regulation of index is achievable by successful integration of photoswitching molecules in host materials, and the current PDMS-AAP composites investigated in this study can potentially enhance nanophotonic and opto-mechanical platforms.

Crystalline azobenzene composites as photochemical phase-change materials

Crystalline binary mixtures of azobenzene and 4-methoxyazobenzene are reported and form photochemical phase change materials that possess working temperatures in the range of −58 °C to 31 °C.

Photoisomerization Kinetics of Photoswitchable Thin Films Based on Nanostructure/Molecular Layers of AlN-AO7

The photoisomerization kinetics of photoswitchable thin films based on nanostructure/molecular layers of AlN-AO7 have been studied, investigated and reported. The trans → cis isomerization process occurs by UV-light irradiation. The cis-isomer could be turned back to the trans-isomer by either thermal or optical relaxation. The kinetics and time-evolution of the photoisomerization and reverse isomerization mechanism of AlN-AO7 thin films are investigated by UV-Vis absorbance spectra using relevant models. All phases of AlN-AO7 thin film, initial trans-, cis-, optical trans-, thermal trans-phases, were investigated using UV-Vis absorbance spectra, FTIR spectra, XRD and SEM. Transforming AlN-AO7 thin film from the initial trans-phase into cis-phase leads to curvature in the AO7 leaves and increases in the strain inside the structure. Going back to the trans-phase by either optical or thermal relaxation leads to vanishing the curvature and decreasing the structure's strain. Finally, the energy storage capacity was calculated using DSC and was found to be 36.38 J g^-1 , simultaneously realizing the multisource solar energy storage and environmental heat.

Synthesis and Characterization of Thin Films Based on Azobenzene Derivative Anchored to CeO2 Nanoparticle for Photoswitching Applications

Azobenzene has attracted substantial attention as a photoswitchable molecule since its applications range from energy and data storage to biomedical applications. This work reports a new type of thin-film based on azobenzene derivative anchored to cerium oxide nanoparticles CeO₂ NPs for photoswitching applications. The trans-cis isomerization and reverse isomerization occur by UV-light exposure and thermal relaxation process, respectively. The photoisomerization and reverse isomerization kinetics for CeO₂ NPs-MR thin films are studied, investigated, and analyzed using UV-Vis absorbance spectra, FTIR spectroscopy, XRD, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), in addition to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement to study the energy storage capacity. The results found that anchoring azobenzene to CeO₂ NPs is successful in multisource storage of solar energy applications.

On the Low-Lying Electronically Excited States of Azobenzene Dimers: Transition Density Matrix Analysis

Azobenzene-containing molecules may associate with each other in systems such as self-assembled monolayers or micelles. The interaction between azobenzene units leads to a formation of exciton states in these molecular assemblies. Apart from local excitations of monomers, the electronic transitions to the exciton states may involve charge transfer excitations. Here, we perform quantum chemical calculations and apply transition density matrix analysis to quantify local and charge transfer contributions to the lowest electronic transitions in azobenzene dimers of various arrangements. We find that the transitions to the lowest exciton states of the considered dimers are dominated by local excitations, but charge transfer contributions become sizable for some of the lowest ππ* electronic transitions in stacked and slip-stacked dimers at short intermolecular distances. In addition, we assess different ways to partition the transition density matrix between fragments. In particular, we find that the inclusion of the atomic orbital overlap has a pronounced effect on quantifying charge transfer contributions if a large basis set is used.

Design and Tuning of Photoswitches for Solar Energy Storage

Current energy demand makes it compulsory to explore alternative energy sources beyond fossil fuels. Molecular solar thermal (MOST) systems have been proposed as a suitable technology for the use and storage of solar energy. Compounds used for this application need to fulfil a long series of requirements, being the absorption of sunlight and the energy stored some of the most critical. In this paper, we study different families of well-known molecular photoswitches from the point of view of their potential use as MOST. Starting from basic structures, we use density functional theory (DFT) computational modelling to propose two different strategies to increase the energy difference between isomers and to tune the absorption spectrum. The inclusion of a mechanical lock in the structure, via an alkyl chain and the presence of a hydrogen bonding are shown to directly influence the energy difference and the absorption spectra. Results shown here prove that these two approaches could be relevant for the design of new compounds with improved performance for MOST applications.

Effect of Iodine Filler on Photoisomerization Kinetics of Photo-Switchable Thin Films Based on PEO-BDK-MR

We report the effect of an iodine filler on photoisomerization kinetics of photo-switchable PEO-BDK-MR thin films. The kinetics of photoisomerization and time progression of PEO-BDK-MR/I₂ nanocomposite thin films are investigated using UV-Vis, FTIR spectroscopies, and modified mathematical models developed using new analytical methods. Incorporating iodine filler into the PEO-BDK-MR polymeric matrix enhances the isomerization energy barrier and considerably increases the processing time. Our outcomes propose that enhanced photoisomerized and time processed (PEO-BDK-MR)/I₂ thin films could be potential candidates for a variety of applications involving molecular solar thermal energy storage media.

Intermolecular London Dispersion Interactions of Azobenzene Switches for Tuning Molecular Solar Thermal Energy Storage Systems

The performance of molecular solar thermal energy storage systems (MOST) depends amongst others on the amount of energy stored. Azobenzenes have been investigated as high-potential materials for MOST applications. In the present study it could be shown that intermolecular attractive London dispersion interactions stabilize the (E)-isomer in bisazobenzene that is linked by different alkyl bridges. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements revealed, that this interaction leads to an increased storage energy per azo-unit of more than 3 kcal/mol compared to the parent azobenzene. The origin of this effect has been supported by computation as well as X-ray analysis. In the solid state structure attractive London dispersion interactions between the C-H of the alkyl bridge and the π-system of the azobenzene could be clearly assigned. This concept will be highly useful in designing more effective MOST systems in the future.

Norbornadiene-dihydroazulene conjugates

The introduction of various photochromic units into the same molecule is an attractive approach for the development of novel molecular solar thermal (MOST) energy storage systems. Here, we present the synthesis and characterisation of a series of covalently linked norbornadiene/dihydroazulene (NBD/DHA) conjugates, using the Sonogashira coupling as the key synthetic step. Generation of the fully photoisomerized quadricyclane/vinylheptafulvene (QC/VHF) isomer was found to depend strongly on how the two units are connected - by linear conjugation (a para-phenylene bridge) or cross-conjugation (a meta-phenylene bridge) or by linking to the five- or seven-membered ring of DHA - as well as on the electronic character of another substituent group on the NBD unit. When the QC-VHF system could be reached, the QC-to-NBD back-reaction occurred faster than the VHF-to-DHA back-reaction, while the latter could be promoted simply by the addition of Cu(i) ions. The absence or presence of Cu(i) can thus be used to control whether heat releases should occur on different or identical time scales. The experimental findings were rationalized in a computational study by comparing natural transition orbitals (NTOs). Moreover, the calculations revealed an energy storage capacity of 106-110 kJ mol^-1 of the QC-VHF isomers, which is higher than the sum of the capacities of the individual, separate units. The major contribution to the energy storage relates to the energetic QC form, while the major contribution to the absorption of visible light originates from the DHA photochrome; some of the NBD-DHA conjugates had absorption onsets at 450 nm or beyond.

Novel photoresponsive cyclicparaphenylenediazenes: structure, strain energy, cis-trans isomerization, and electronic properties

A series of cis-trans isomers of cyclicparaphenylenediazenes (CPPDs) have been designed to explore their potential applications in solar thermal fuels and photoswitchable devices. In this work, three isomers of cis-trans-[3]CPPD, seven isomers of cis-trans-[4]CPPD, eleven isomers of cis-trans-[5]CPPD, and sixteen isomers of cis-trans-[6]CPPD have been proposed using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory. The stability of these CPPDs has been quantified by the homodesmotic reaction approach. Strain energies (SE) indicate that 3-cct, 4-ctct-anti, 5-cctct-anti, and 6-cttttc-anti are stable molecules in their respective CPPDs. The SE and heats of formation of cis-trans-CPPDs were also compared with those of all-cis-CPPDs and all-trans-CPPD isomers. The calculations suggest that cis-trans-CPPDs are more stable than all-cis and all-trans-CPPDs. The SE and also suggest that 3-cct, 4-ctct-anti, 5-cctct-anti, and 6-cttttc-anti are important candidates for laboratory test. The calculated highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy gaps of cis-trans-CPPDs indicate that these oligomers are potential materials for the construction of solar cells. Time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations of CPPDs show a characteristic peak in the range of 450 nm to 600 nm, which is consistent with previous studies. The predicted structures, and thermochemical and electronic properties can be a good starting point for the synthesis of CPPD-based photoswitchable and solar fuel cell devices.

Surface chemistry of 2,3-dibromosubstituted norbornadiene/quadricyclane as molecular solar thermal energy storage system on Ni(111)

Dwindling fossil fuels force humanity to search for new energy production routes. Besides energy generation, its storage is a crucial aspect. One promising approach is to store energy from the sun chemically in strained organic molecules, so-called molecular solar thermal (MOST) systems, which can release the stored energy catalytically. A prototypical MOST system is norbornadiene/quadricyclane (NBD/QC) whose energy release and surface chemistry need to be understood. Besides important key parameters such as molecular weight, endergonic reaction profiles, and sufficient quantum yields, the position of the absorption onset of NBD is crucial to cover preferably a large range of sunlight's spectrum. For this purpose, one typically derivatizes NBD with electron-donating and/or electron-accepting substituents. To keep the model system simple enough to be investigated with photoemission techniques, we introduced bromine atoms at the 2,3-position of both compounds. We study the adsorption behavior, energy release, and surface chemistry on Ni(111) using high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HR-XPS), UV photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. Both Br₂-NBD and Br₂-QC partially dissociate on the surface at ∼120 K, with Br₂-QC being more stable. Several stable adsorption geometries for intact and dissociated species were calculated, and the most stable structures are determined for both molecules. By temperature-programmed HR-XPS, we were able to observe the conversion of Br₂-QC to Br₂-NBD in situ at 170 K. The decomposition of Br₂-NBD starts at 190 K when C-Br bond cleavage occurs and benzene and methylidene are formed. For Br₂-QC, the cleavage already occurs at 130 K when cycloreversion to Br₂-NBD sets in.

Thermodynamic limits to energy conversion in solar thermal fuels

Solar thermal fuels (STFs) are an unconventional paradigm for solar energy conversion and storage which is attracting renewed attention. In this concept, a material absorbs sunlight and stores the energy chemically via an induced structural change, which can later be reversed to release the energy as heat. An example is the azobenzene molecule which has a cis-trans photoisomerization with these properties, and can be tuned by chemical substitution and attachment to templates such as carbon nanotubes, small molecules, or polymers. By analogy to the Shockley-Queisser limit for photovoltaics, we analyze the maximum attainable efficiency for STFs from fundamental thermodynamic considerations. Microscopic reversibility provides a bound on the quantum yield of photoisomerization due to fluorescence, regardless of details of photochemistry. We emphasize the importance of analyzing the free energy, not just enthalpy, of the metastable molecules, and find an efficiency limit for conversion to stored chemical energy equal to the Shockley-Queisser limit. STF candidates from a recent high-throughput search are analyzed in light of the efficiency limit.

Ultrasonic Studies of Solid Azobenzene-Decorated Polymer Thin Films

This work investigates the effect of ultrasound on switching of cis azobenzene isomers to their trans counterparts in solid films of methyl methacrylate and methacryloyloxyazobenzene copolymers [P(MMA/MOAB)]. Ultraviolet-visible and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies demonstrate that 46% of the cis isomer converts to the trans form purely by ultrasonic agitation and 46% converts to the trans isomer by localized ultrasound-induced heating effects. Comparative studies of isomerization by ultrasound wave, heat, and visible irradiation show that ultrasound exposure requires a longer time to switch the cis-to-trans conformation. The estimated activation energy for the cis-to-trans conversion in solid polymer films is shown to be comparable to previous values of azobenzene isomerization, indicating that incorporation of the chromophore in a polymeric system affects the kinetics of transition but not the barriers to conformational change.

Azobenzene-based solar thermal fuels: design, properties, and applications

Development of renewable energy technologies has been a significant area of research amongst scientists with the aim of attaining a sustainable world society. Solar thermal fuels that can capture, convert, store, and release solar energy in the form of heat through reversible photoisomerization of molecular photoswitches such as azobenzene derivatives are currently in the limelight of research. Herein, we provide a state-of-the-art account on the recent advancements in solar thermal fuels based on azobenzene photoswitches. We begin with an overview on the importance of azobenzene-based solar thermal fuels and their fundamentals. Then, we highlight the recent advances in diverse azobenzene materials for solar thermal fuels such as pure azobenzene derivatives, nanocarbon-templated azobenzene, and polymer-templated azobenzene. The basic design concepts of these advanced solar energy storage materials are discussed, and their promising applications are highlighted. We then introduce the recent endeavors in the molecular design of azobenzene derivatives toward efficient solar thermal fuels, and conclude with new perspectives on the future scope, opportunities and challenges. It is expected that continuous pioneering research involving scientists and engineers from diverse technological backgrounds could trigger the rapid advancement of this important interdisciplinary field, which embraces chemistry, physics, engineering, nanoscience, nanotechnology, materials science, polymer science, etc.

Twist and Return-Induced Ring Strain Triggers Quick Relaxation of a ( Z)-Stabilized Cyclobisazobenzene

Continuous irradiation of the thermodynamically stable ( Z, Z)-cyclobisazobenzene does not lead to accumulation of a ( Z, E) or ( E, E) isomer as one might expect. Our combined experimental and computational investigation reveals that Z → E photoisomerization still takes place on an ultrafast time scale but induces large ring strain in the macrocycle, which leads to a very fast thermal back-isomerization, preventing photostationary accumulation of ( E)-isomers.

Designing Efficient Solar-Thermal Fuels with [n.n](9,10)Anthracene Cyclophanes: A Theoretical Perspective

Molecular solar thermal storage (MOST) systems have been largely limited to three classes of molecular motifs: azo-benzene, norbornadiene, and transition metal based fulvalene-tetracarbonyl systems. Photodimerization of anthracene has been known for a century; however, this photoprocess has not been successfully exploited for MOST purposes due to its poor energy storage. Using well-calibrated theoretical methods on a series of [n.n](9,10)bis-anthracene cyclophanes, we have exposed that they can store solar energy into chemical bonds and can release in the form of heat energy on demand under mild conditions. The storage is mainly attributed to the strain in the rings formed by the alkyl linkers upon photoexcitation. Our results demonstrate that the gravimetric energy storage density for longer alkyl-chain linkers (n > 3) are comparable to those for the best-known candidates; however, it lacks some of the deleterious attributes of known systems, thus making the proposed molecules desirable targets for MOST applications.

Probing the π → π* photoisomerization mechanism of trans-azobenzene by multi-state ab initio on-the-fly trajectory dynamics simulations

Global nonadiabatic switching on-the-fly trajectory surface hopping simulations at the 5SA-CASSCF(6,6)/6-31G quantum level have been employed to probe the photoisomerization mechanism of trans-azobenzene upon ππ* excitation within four coupled singlet low-lying electronic states (S₀, S₁, S₂, and S₃).

Structural changes in a Schiff base molecular assembly initiated by scanning tunneling microscopy tip

We report the controlled self-organization and switching of newly designed Schiff base (E)-4-((4-(phenylethynyl) benzylidene) amino) benzenethiol (EPBB) molecules on a Au (111) surface at room temperature. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS) were used to image and analyze the conformational changes of the EPBB molecules. The conformational change of the molecules was induced by using the STM tip while increasing the tunneling current. The switching of a domain or island of molecules was shown to be induced by the STM tip during scanning. Unambiguous fingerprints of the switching mechanism were observed via STM/STS measurements. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering was employed, to control and identify quantitatively the switching mechanism of molecules in a monolayer. Density functional theory calculations were also performed in order to understand the microscopic details of the switching mechanism. These calculations revealed that the molecular switching behavior stemmed from the strong interaction of the EPBB molecules with the STM tip. Our approach to controlling intermolecular mechanics provides a path towards the bottom-up assembly of more sophisticated molecular machines.

Energy Storage in Strained Organic Molecules: (Spectro)Electrochemical Characterization of Norbornadiene and Quadricyclane

We have investigated the electrochemically triggered cycloreversion of quadricyclane (QC) to norbornadiene (NBD), a system that holds the potential to combine both energy storage and conversion in a single molecule. Unambiguous voltammetric traces are obtained for pure NBD and pure QC, the latter a strained polycyclic isomer of the former. The difference in redox potentials is smaller than the energy difference between the neutral molecules. This is owing to a significant energy difference between the corresponding radical cations, as demonstrated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The vibrational modes of each pure compound are characterized experimentally in the fingerprint region and identified by DFT methods. Thermal and electrochemical transformations of NBD and QC are monitored in situ by IR spectroelectrochemical methods. The kinetics of the cycloreversion of QC to NBD, which is catalyzed by oxidizing equivalents, can be controlled by an applied electrode potential, which implies the ability to adjust in real time the release of thermal power stored in QC.
