Abstract
BACKGROUND There are limited data available, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), on the long-term quality of life (QoL) and family functioning of primary caregivers of children and young people (CYPs) affected by primary brain tumors (PBTs). This study aimed to assess the factors associated with the mean change in QoL and family functioning scores of primary caregivers of CYP patients with PBTs 12 months posttreatment. METHODS This prospective cohort study enrolled CYPs aged 5-21 years with newly diagnosed PBTs and their primary caregivers. The study was carried out between November 2020 and July 2023. The primary caregivers of CYPs were recruited from two major tertiary care centers in Karachi, Pakistan. The primary caregivers QoL were assessed by the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) Family Impact Module. The assessment was undertaken by a psychologist at the time of diagnosis and 12 months posttreatment. The data were analyzed with STATA version 12. RESULTS Forty-eight CYPs with newly diagnosed PBTs and their primary caregivers (46 mothers and 2 fathers) were enrolled. At 12 months posttreatment, 25 (52%) CYPs and their primary caregivers (mothers) were reassessed, and 23 (48%) were lost to follow-up. On multivariable analysis, a significant decrease in mothers' mean 12-month posttreatment QoL and family functioning scores was associated with CYP having posttreatment seizures (beta= -10.2; 95% CI: -18.4 to -2.0) and with the financial burden associated with the CYP's illness (beta= -0.3; 95% CI: -0.4 to -0.1). However, in those cases where CYP had higher posttreatment quality of life scores (beta = 0.4; 95% CI = 0.1, 0.6) and posttreatment higher verbal intelligence scores (beta = 0.1; 95% CI = 0.01, 0.3), the mothers' QoL and family functioning scores were significantly greater. CONCLUSION We found a significant decrease in QoL of mothers who had a high financial burden and whose CYP had posttreatment seizures. However, those whose CYPs had higher posttreatment verbal intelligence scores and quality of life scores had significantly greater QoL scores. Identification of the factors that influence primary caregivers QoL has the potential to aid in the development of targeted strategies to alleviate stressors and improve the overall quality of life for primary caregivers and their children who are at high risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Inefficiencies in executive functioning (EF), more specifically cognitive flexibility and an overly detailed processing style, are frequently observed in individuals with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and have been identified as potential targets in treatment. Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) is an adjunctive treatment approach specifically designed to have a positive impact on EF. Mainly evaluated in adults, CRT has been criticized for its perceived ineffectiveness in promoting weight restoration or directly reducing eating disorder symptoms. METHOD We argue that we need to refocus our conceptual framework for using CRT as an adjunctive treatment and specifically explore its potential benefit in adolescents. RESULTS Adolescence is a critical window for EF development during which CRT has the potential to have the most impact. While it may not specifically ameliorate eating disorder symptoms and directly improve weight gain, CRT may mitigate the impact of malnutrition on adolescent brain development, reduce attrition rates in treatment, and improve cognitive flexibility and (indirectly) other maintaining factors, thereby improving global functioning. DISCUSSION More research needs to be done to understand the development of EF in adolescents with AN and how best to employ CRT as an adjunctive treatment to support development and target maintaining factors. The current article broadly reviews findings on executive functioning inefficiencies in adolescents with AN and discusses the purpose and role of CRT in treating AN. Finally, we highlight key critiques of using CRT and pose questions for future research. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE Treatments targeting executive functioning in adolescents with AN are limited. We need to better understand how CRT can benefit adolescents in treatment. Increasing treatment options, including adjunctive treatments, is necessary to reduce the long-term impact of AN.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive impairment is a common late effect in child and adult brain cancer survivors (BCS). Still, there is a dearth of research aimed at therapeutic interventions and no standard treatment options for most BCS. OBJECTIVE To describe 1) a novel neuropsychological rehabilitation program for BCS - the "I'm aware: Patients And Carers Together" (ImPACT) program, and 2) two studies that aim to assess the feasibility of the ImPACT program in child and adult BCS, respectively. The program adapts the holistic neuropsychological approach pioneered by Leonard Diller and Yehuda Ben-Yishay to an outpatient setting. METHODS Two feasibility studies are described: 1) A single-armed study with 15 child BCS (10-17 years) (ImPACT Child); and 2) a randomized waitlist-controlled trial with 26 adult BCS (>17 years) (ImPACT Adult). In both studies, patients will undergo an 8-week program together with a cohabiting carer. Primary outcomes (i.e., cognitive and neurobehavioral symptoms), and secondary outcomes (i.e., behavioral and psychological symptoms, e.g., quality of life, fatigue) will be assessed at four time points: pre-, mid-, and post intervention, and 8 weeks follow-up. Adult waitlist controls will be assessed at equivalent time points and will be included in the intervention group after all study assessments. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted at follow-up. EXPECTED OUTCOMES Results will provide feasibility data in support of future larger scale trials. DISCUSSION The findings could potentially improve the management of cognitive impairment in BCS and transform available services. The program can be delivered in-person or remotely and harnesses existing resources in patients' lives.

Abstract
There is considerable interest in cognitive and behavioural interventions to manage and improve neurocognitive (dys)functions in childhood cancer survivors and the literature is rapidly growing. This systematic review aimed to examine the literature of such interventions and their impact on executive functions (EFs) and attention. A search of relevant manuscripts was performed in PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science in March 2023 in accordance with the PRISMA statement. After screening 3737 records, 17 unique studies published between 2002 and 2022 were charted and summarized. Participants (N = 718) were mostly children (M = 12.2 years), who were long-term survivors (M = 5.0 years post treatment) of brain or CNS tumours (48%). Identified interventions included computerized cognitive training, physical activity, and cognitive interventions with compensatory strategy training. The highest quality RCT studies included computerized training (i.e., Cogmed), neurofeedback, and exergaming. Evidence suggests that Cogmed may improve the performance of certain working memory tasks (near transfer) and possibly improve visual attention tasks for individuals with working memory impairments. However, the evidence did not support far transfer of effects to real life. No significant effects (near or far-transfer) were found following neurofeedback and exergaming interventions. Finally, a knowledge gap was identified for interventions directed at long-term survivors in adulthood.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The primary aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of a developmentally tailored neurocognitive assessment in survivors of childhood acute leukemia with Down syndrome (DS-leukemia). A secondary aim was to compare outcomes in the DS-leukemia group to a historical comparison group of individuals with DS and no history of childhood cancer. METHODS Survivors of DS-leukemia (n = 43; 56% male, mean [SD] age at diagnosis = 4.3 [4.5] years; age at evaluation = 15 [7.9] years) completed a neurocognitive assessment battery that included direct measures of attention, executive function, and processing speed, and proxy ratings of attention problems and executive dysfunction. Direct assessment outcomes were compared to a historical comparison cohort of individuals with DS and no history of childhood cancer (DS-control; n = 117; 56% male, mean [SD] age at evaluation = 12.7 [3.4] years). RESULTS Rates of valid task completion ranged from 54% to 95%, suggesting feasibility for most direct assessment measures. Compared to the DS-control group, the DS-leukemia group had significantly lower completion rates on measures of executive function (p = 0.008) and processing speed (p = 0.018) compared to the DS-control group. There were no other significant group differences in completion rates. Compared to the DS-control group, the DS-leukemia group had significantly more accurate performance on two measures of executive function (p = 0.032; p = 0.005). Compared to the DS-control group, the DS-leukemia group had significantly more problems with executive function as identified on proxy ratings (6.5% vs. 32.6%, p = <0.001). CONCLUSION Children with Down syndrome (DS) are at increased risk for developing acute leukemia compared to the general population but are systematically excluded from neurocognitive outcome studies among leukemia survivors. This study demonstrated the feasibility of evaluating neurocognitive late effects in leukemia survivors with DS using novel measures appropriate for populations with intellectual developmental disorder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Survivors of pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors treated with craniospinal irradiation (CSI) exhibit long-term cognitive difficulties. Goals of this study were to evaluate longitudinal effects of candidate and novel genetic variants on cognitive decline following CSI. METHODS Intelligence quotient (IQ), working memory (WM), and processing speed (PS) were longitudinally collected from patients treated with CSI (n = 241). Genotype-by-time interactions were evaluated using mixed-effects linear regression to identify common variants (minor allele frequency > 1%) associated with cognitive performance change. Novel variants associated with cognitive decline (P < 5 × 10-5) in individuals of European ancestry (n = 163) were considered replicated if they demonstrated consistent genotype-by-time interactions (P < .05) in individuals of non-European ancestries (n = 78) and achieved genome-wide statistical significance (P < 5 × 10-8) in a meta-analysis across ancestry groups. RESULTS Participants were mostly males (65%) diagnosed with embryonal tumors (98%) at a median age of 8.3 years. Overall, 1150 neurocognitive evaluations were obtained (median = 5, range: 2-10 per participant). One of the five loci previously associated with cognitive outcomes in pediatric CNS tumors survivors demonstrated significant time-dependent IQ declines (PPARA rs6008197, P = .004). Two variants associated with IQ in the general population were associated with declines in IQ after Bonferroni correction (rs9348721, P = 1.7 × 10-5; rs31771, P = 7.8 × 10-4). In genome-wide analyses, we identified novel loci associated with accelerated declines in IQ (rs116595313, meta-P = 9.4 × 10-9), WM (rs17774009, meta-P = 4.2 × 10-9), and PS (rs77467524, meta-P = 1.5 × 10-8; rs17630683, meta-P = 2.0 × 10-8; rs73249323, meta-P = 3.1 × 10-8). CONCLUSIONS Inherited genetic variants involved in baseline cognitive functioning and novel susceptibility loci jointly influence the degree of treatment-associated cognitive decline in pediatric CNS tumor survivors.

Abstract
Choroid plexus carcinomas (CPC) are rare aggressive tumours that primarily affect very young children. Treatment for CPC typically involves a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Whilst considered necessary for a cure, these therapies have significant neurocognitive consequences for patients, negatively impacting cognitive function including memory, attention, executive functioning, and full-scale intelligence quotients (FSIQ). These challenges significantly impact the quality of life and ultimately socioeconomic parameters such as the level of educational attainment, marital status, and socioeconomic status. This review looks at the tumour- and treatment-related causes of neurocognitive damage in CPC patients and the progress made in finding strategies to reduce these. Opportunities to mitigate the neurodevelopmental consequences of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy are explored in the context of CPC treatment. Evaluation of the pathological and biological mechanisms of injury has identified innovative approaches to neurocognitive protection and neurorehabilitation, which aim to limit the neurocognitive damage. This review aims to highlight multiple approaches physicians can use when treating young children with CPC, to focus on neurocognitive outcomes as a measure of success.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic health conditions in children and adolescents can have profound impacts on education, well-being and health. They are described as non-communicable illnesses that are prolonged in duration, do not resolve spontaneously, and rarely cured completely. Due to variations in the definition of chronic health conditions and how they are measured prevalence estimates vary considerably and have been reported to be as high as 44% in children and adolescents. Of young people with a chronic health condition, an estimated 5% are affected by severe conditions characterised by limitations to daily activities impacting their ability to attend school. School attendance is important for academic and social skill development as well as well-being. When children and adolescents are absent from school due to a chronic health condition, school engagement can be affected. Disengagement from school is associated with poorer academic achievement, social-emotional functioning and career choices. Education support services for children and adolescents with chronic health conditions aim to prevent disengagement from school, education and learning during periods where their illness caused them to miss school. However, there is limited evidence on the effectiveness of educational support interventions at improving school engagement and educational/learning outcomes for children and adolescents with chronic health conditions. OBJECTIVES To describe the nature of educational support interventions for children and adolescents with a chronic health condition, and to examine the effectiveness of these interventions on school engagement and academic achievement. SEARCH METHODS We searched eight electronic databases which span the health/medical, social sciences and education disciplines between 18 and 25 January 2021: Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase (Ovid). CINAHL (EBSCO), PsycINFO (EBSCO), ERIC (Education Resources Information Center), Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts: ASSIA (ProQuest), and PubMed (from 2019). We also searched five grey literature trials registers and databases between 8 and 12 February 2021 to identify additional published and unpublished studies, theses and conference abstracts, as well as snowballing reference lists of included studies. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised controlled trials (RCTs), controlled before-and-after studies and interrupted time series studies that met the inclusion criteria were selected. Other inclusion criteria were: participants - must include children or adolescents (aged four to 18 years) with a chronic health condition, intervention - must include educational support, outcomes - must report the primary outcomes (i.e. school engagement or academic achievement) or secondary outcomes (i.e. quality of life, transition to school/school re-entry, mental health or adverse outcomes). DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two people independently screened titles and abstracts, and full-text articles, to identify included studies. Where disagreements arose between reviewers, the two reviewers discussed the discrepancy. If resolution was unable to be achieved, the issues were discussed with a senior reviewer to resolve the matter. We extracted study characteristic data and risk of bias data from the full texts of included studies using a data extraction form before entering the information into Review Manager 5.4.1. Two people independently extracted data, assessed risk of bias of individual studies and undertook GRADE assessments of the quality of the evidence. Meta-analysis was not possible due to the small number of studies for each outcome. Our synthesis, therefore, used vote-counting based on the direction of the effect/impact of the intervention. MAIN RESULTS The database searches identified 14,202 titles and abstracts. Grey literature and reference list searches did not identify any additional studies that met the inclusion criteria. One hundred and twelve full-text studies were assessed for eligibility, of which four studies met the eligibility criteria for inclusion in the review. All studies were randomised controlled studies with a combined total of 359 participants. All included studies were disease-specific; three studies focused on children with cancer, and one study focused on children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). There was evidence that education support improved school engagement with three of four studies favouring the intervention. Three studies measured academic achievement but only two studies provided effect estimates. Based on the vote-counting method, we found contradictory results from the studies: one study showed a positive direction of effect and the other study showed a negative direction of effect. One study measured transition back to school and found a positive impact of education support favouring the intervention (SMD 0.18, 95% CI -0.46 to 0.96, no P value reported). The result came from a single study with a small sample size (n = 30), and produced a confidence interval that indicated the possibility of a very small or no effect. The overall certainty of evidence for these three outcomes was judged to be 'very low'. Two of four studies measured mental health (measured as self-esteem). Both studies reported a positive impact of education support interventions on mental health; this was the only outcome for which the overall certainty of evidence was judged to be 'low' rather than 'very low'. No studies measured or reported quality of life or adverse effects. Risk of bias (selection, performance, detection, attrition, reporting and other bias) was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool for randomised trials (version 1). Overall risk of bias for all studies was assessed as 'high risk' because all studies had at least one domain at high risk of bias. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS This review has demonstrated the infancy of quality research on the effectiveness of education support interventions for children and adolescents with chronic health conditions. At best, we can say that we are uncertain whether education support interventions improve either academic achievement or school engagement. Of the secondary outcomes, we are also uncertain whether education support interventions improve transition back to school, or school re-entry. However, we suggest there is some evidence that education support may slightly improve mental health, measured as self-esteem. Given the current state of the evidence of the effectiveness of education support interventions for children and adolescents with chronic health conditions, we highlight some important implications for future research in this field to strengthen the evidence that can inform effective practice and policy.

Abstract
The disciplines of neuropsychology and neurosurgery have a history of partnership that has improved prognoses for patients with neurologic diagnoses that once had poor outcomes. This article outlines the evolution of this relationship and describes the current role that clinical neuropsychology has within a department of neurological surgery across the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative stages of treatment. Understanding the foundations of collaboration between neuropsychology and neurosurgery contextualizes present challenges and future innovations for advancing excellence along the continuum of care for all neurosurgical patients.

Abstract
Radiotherapy-induced neurocognitive dysfunction after cranial irradiation has an incidence of 40-100%. It may affect both children and adults, and represents a significant burden not only on ill individuals and their caregivers but also on the health care system and society in general. Multiple patient-, tumor-, and treatment-related factors may contribute to development of this complication, but its pathophysiological mechanisms are still not understood clearly. It is hoped that introduction of more advanced techniques for conformal irradiation, optimized dosimetry, and specific prophylactic measures will decrease the risk of neurocognitive decline in brain tumor survivors in the future.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of pediatric ischemic stroke rose by 35% between 1990 and 2013. Affected patients can experience the gradual onset of cognitive impairment in the form of impaired language, memory, intelligence, attention, and processing speed, which affect 20-50% of these patients. Only few evidence-based treatments are available due to significant heterogeneity in age, pathological characteristics, and the combined epilepsy status of the affected children. Methods We searched the literature published by Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed, which researched non-pharmacological rehabilitation interventions for cognitive impairment following pediatric ischemic stroke. The search period is from the establishment of the database to January 2022. Results The incidence of such impairment is influenced by patient age, pathological characteristics, combined epilepsy status, and environmental factors. Non-pharmacological treatments for cognitive impairment that have been explored to date mainly include exercise training, psychological intervention, neuromodulation strategies, computer-assisted cognitive training, brain-computer interfaces (BCI), virtual reality, music therapy, and acupuncture. In childhood stroke, the only interventions that can be retrieved are psychological intervention and neuromodulation strategies. Conclusion However, evidence regarding the efficacy of these interventions is relatively weak. In future studies, the active application of a variety of interventions to improve pediatric cognitive function will be necessary, and neuroimaging and electrophysiological measurement techniques will be of great value in this context. Larger multi-center prospective longitudinal studies are also required to offer more accurate evidence-based guidance for the treatment of patients with pediatric stroke.

Abstract
Cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS) is a common complication following surgical resection of childhood tumors arising in the posterior fossa. Alteration of linguistic production, up to muteness and emotional lability, generally reported at least 24 h after the intervention, is the hallmark of post-operative CMS. Other associated traits include hypotonia and other cerebellar motor signs, cerebellar cognitive-affective syndrome, motor deficits from the involvement of the long pathways, and cranial neuropathies. Recovery usually takes 6 months, but most children are burdened with long-term residual deficits. The pathogenic mechanism is likely due to the damage occurring to the proximal efferent cerebellar pathway, including the dentate nucleus, the superior cerebellar peduncle, and its decussation in the mesencephalic tegmentum. Proven risk factors include brain stem invasion, diagnosis of medulloblastoma, midline localization, tumor size, invasion of the fourth ventricle, invasion of the superior cerebellar peduncle, left-handedness, and incision of the vermis. Currently, rehabilitation is the cornerstone of the treatment of patients with cerebellar mutism syndrome, and it must consider the three main impaired domains, namely speech, cognition/behavior, and movement.

Abstract
Cancer and its treatment significantly affect the cognitive functioning of pediatric cancer survivors. This meta-analysis aimed to examine the effects of neurocognitive rehabilitation interventions on the cognitive functioning and intellectual performance of pediatric cancer survivors. Four databases were searched until December 15, 2021. RevMan 5.4 was used to analyze the effects of neurocognitive rehabilitation interventions on the cognitive functioning of pediatric cancer survivors. Ten eligible randomized controlled trials were initially identified, and nine of these were included in the meta-analysis. For the working memory outcome, the pooled effect results favored study interventions and had statistical significance at postintervention assessment (Z = 2.24, P = 0.03). For the attention outcome, there were significant statistical differences at postintervention and 3/6-month follow-up assessment (Z = 2.72, P = 0.007 and Z = 10.45, P < 0.001, respectively). For the executive functioning outcome, there were significant statistical differences at postintervention and 3/6-month follow-up assessment (Z = 2.90, P = 0.004 and Z = 14.75, P < 0.001, respectively). For the academic/intellectual performance secondary outcome, the pooled overall effects of study interventions on the academic/intellectual outcome were positive at postintervention and follow-up assessment (Ps < 0.001). No studies reported any adverse events related to neurocognitive and educational interventions. This meta-analysis found that neurocognitive rehabilitation interventions improve the working memory, attention, and executive functioning of pediatric cancer survivors at postintervention and short-term follow-up. Neurocognitive rehabilitation also has positive effects on the academic/intellectual performance of this study population during a vulnerable period in their development.

Abstract
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common pediatric epilepsy comorbidities. Treating ADHD in the context of epilepsy can be overwhelming for parents and clinicians. Current frontline treatment for ADHD is stimulant medication. However, some parents of pediatric patients with epilepsy have concerns about adding additional medication to their child's epilepsy regimen and/or about adverse effects of stimulant medication. Non-medication ADHD treatments including psychosocial interventions and ketogenic diet have also shown success in improving ADHD symptoms. Our focused review provides an easy-to-use guide for clinicians on ADHD interventions and combinations of interventions for pediatric patients with epilepsy and ADHD. Our guide includes information from 8 electronic databases for peer-reviewed, English language studies of psychosocial treatments for youth with epilepsy and ADHD. One hundred eight studies were selected based on inclusion criteria (21 systematic reviews, 12 meta-analyses, 8 literature reviews, 6 population surveys, 31 clinical trials, 20 cross-sectional studies, and 10 retrospective reviews). Results indicated that stimulant medication is a frontline treatment for ADHD symptoms in youth with epilepsy, with important caveats and alternatives.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Nowadays, there is promising evidence that psychosocial interventions could be helpful in paediatric oncology. Thus, this review aimed to describe the impact of psychosocial interventions on cancer-related health outcomes in children. METHODS Fifteen English electronic databases were searched from October to December 2020. Only randomised controlled trials that (1) included children ≤18 years old diagnosed with cancer, (2) evaluated the effects of psychosocial interventions, and (3) reported health outcomes including quality of life, anxiety, depression, stress, distress, self-esteem, psychological adjustment, treatment adherence, pain, fatigue, and academic performance were included. RESULTS Ten RCTs were included in this review. Six types of psychosocial interventions (social skill training, music-based intervention, therapeutic play, cognitive therapy, wish intervention, and art therapy) were identified. The studies were assessed as having low to high risk of bias. Nine of the studies reported significant improvement in at least one outcome measure. But quantifying the pooled effect was not applicable due to the heterogeneity of interventions. CONCLUSION Psychosocial interventions could be beneficial in paediatric oncology. Yet, the outcomes were reported in heterogeneous types of interventions and participants. The results underscore the need to conduct further studies that include participants with specific cancer diagnoses and types of interventions.

Abstract
This narrative review highlights the latest achievements in the field of post-surgical rehabilitation of posterior fossa tumors. Studies investigating the effects of cognitive rehabilitation programs have been considered, following a comprehensive literature search in the scientific electronic databases: Pubmed, Scopus, Plos One, and ScienceDirect. This review investigates the effects of cognitive remediation, with specific highlights for single cognitive domains. The results revealed that in spite of the increasing number of children who survive into adulthood, very few studies investigated the effects of rehabilitation programs in this specific population. This study details new, promising therapeutic opportunities for children after brain surgery. More research in this filed is needed to identify the most effective protocols for clinical use.

Abstract
Pediatric brain tumor treatments have a high success rate, but survivors are at risk of cognitive sequelae that impact long-term quality of life. We summarize recent clinical and animal model research addressing pathogenesis or evaluating candidate interventions for treatment-induced cognitive sequelae. Assayed interventions encompass a broad range of approaches, including modifications to radiotherapy, modulation of immune response, prevention of treatment-induced cell loss or promotion of cell renewal, manipulation of neuronal signaling, and lifestyle/environmental adjustments. We further emphasize the potential of neuroimaging as a key component of cross-translation to contextualize laboratory research within broader clinical findings. This cross-translational approach has the potential to accelerate discovery to improve pediatric cancer survivors' long-term quality of life.

Abstract
Pediatric brain tumour survivors experience deficits in mathematics and working memory. An open question is whether it is most optimal to target direct cognitive skills (i.e. working memory) or focus on specific academic outcomes (i.e. mathematics) for in remediation. We conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial to determine the feasibility of comparing a working memory versus mathematics intervention. Pediatric brain tumor survivors (7-17 years) were randomly assigned to Cogmed or JumpMath interventions, or an Active Control/Reading group. All participants received Educational Liaison support and completed ~12-weeks of home-based intervention with weekly, telephone-based consultation in one of the three conditions. Standardized assessments of auditory and visual working memory, mathematics calculation and reasoning were completed pre- and post- intervention. Twenty-nine participants completed the interventions; 94% of parents reported a high degree of satisfaction with the interventions and ease of implementation. Participants in JumpMath demonstrated improved mathematics calculation from pre- to post- intervention (p=0.02). Further, participants in both Cogmed and JumpMath showed evidence of pre- to post- intervention improvements in auditory working memory relative to controls (p=0.01). The Cogmed group also showed improvements in visual working memory (p=0.03). Findings suggest that targeted intervention is feasible in survivors of pediatric brain tumors, though with a relatively low recruitment rate. With preliminary findings of improved calculation and working memory following JumpMath and working memory following Cogmed, this pilot trial lays the groundwork for future programs that investigate different inteCognitiveRehabilitationrventions that may be applied to target the unique needs of each survivor.

Abstract
Introduction: Survivors of pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors are at high risk for late effects and long-term morbidity. The quality of survival became increasingly important, as advances in diagnostics, multimodal treatment strategies, and supportive care have led to significant increases in long-term survival. Aim: This review aims to provide a global overview of the potential late effects and long-term follow-up care of CNS tumor survivors, directed to trainees and practitioners with less targeted training in pediatric oncology. Late effects in CNS tumor survivors: A specific focus on CNS tumor survivors relies on cognitive and psychosocial late effects, as they may have an impact on education, professional career, independent living, and quality of life. Further important late effects in CNS tumor survivors include endocrine, metabolic, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular diseases. Conclusions: Comprehensive long-term follow-up care is essential for pediatric CNS tumor survivors to improve their quality of survival and quality of life. An individualized approach, taking all potential late effects into account, and carried out by an interdisciplinary team, is recommended, and should continue into adulthood. Existing recommendations and guidelines on long-term follow-up care guide the multidisciplinary teams.

Abstract
A qualitative study evaluated perceptions of nurses in the drawings of 18 children ages 6-12 years hospitalized in pediatric units, and their expectations of nurses. The children made drawings of nurses and talked about the drawings with the researchers. The children's perceptions of nurses were categorized as 55.6% positive and 44.4% negative. Content analysis of the interviews generated themes of children's expectations of nurses: Health, compassion and support, and doing no harm. Analyzing pictures drawn by children is a useful method for health-care professionals to learn about children's thoughts and feelings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To develop and test a brief Composite Intervention Module for Pre-adolescents with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (CIMPALL). DESIGN Single-center randomized controlled design. SETTING A tertiary care center of national importance PARTICIPANTS: A total of 36 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in the maintenance phase of the treatment. INTERVENTION A five-session (540 min) brief, multidomain, audiovisually aided, therapist-facilitated conjoint intervention module for children with cancer and their parents. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Standardized psychological tools for children including CBCL, CPSS (Child Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms Scale), PedsQol (Pediatric Quality of Life), and NIMHANS (National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences) neuropsychological battery and parents including PTSD CC (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Civilian Checklist), CHIP (Coping Health Inventory for Parents), CBS (Caregiver Burden Scale), and SRQ (Self-Reporting Questionnaire). RESULTS A total of 36 patients were randomized to an experimental or a control group. Over 80% agreement was observed on indices of expert evaluation; 100% of participants found the sessions to be helpful, useful, appropriate in terms of time, duration, and place, and interventionist. The participation rate in the sessions was 94% and the study flow was smooth; 97.3% eligible candidates agreed to participate. Furthermore, 100% agreement on performance of activities was observed and the attrition rate was 5.26%. CONCLUSION This pilot study presents the CIMPALL, which to the best of our knowledge is the first of its kind in India. The data suggest that the CIMPALL intervention is feasibly delivered by a clinical psychologist and that the CIMPALL intervention has an impact on important psychosocial variables for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and their parents.

Abstract
Evolving treatment paradigms have led to increased survival rates for children diagnosed with a brain tumor, and this has increasingly shifted clinical and research focus to morbidity and quality of life among survivors. Among unfavorable outcomes, survivors of pediatric brain tumors are at risk for academic failure and low educational attainment, which may then contribute to lower health related quality of life, lower income and vocational status, and a greater likelihood of dependence on others in adulthood. Several specific risk factors for lower educational performance and attainment have been investigated. These are typically examined in isolation from one another which clouds understanding of the full range and potential interplay of contributors to educational difficulties. This review integrates and summarizes what is known about the direct and indirect barriers to educational success and performance (i.e., educational pain points) to enhance clinician knowledge of factors to consider when working with pediatric brain tumor survivors. Specific barriers to educational success include neurocognitive difficulties, school absences, psychosocial challenges, challenges to knowledge and communication, and physical and sensory difficulties. Finally, we discuss the current state of educational interventions and supports and offer recommendations for future research to improve educational outcomes for pediatric brain tumor survivors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate an interactive group psychoeducation programme for children treated for leukaemia. METHODS A longitudinal randomised controlled study across four UK hospitals with an immediate (N = 26) and delay control group (N = 32). The intervention covered the pathophysiology of leukaemia, its treatment, side effects and the importance of positive health behaviours. Primary outcomes were parent-reported child health related quality of life (HRQoL) and behavioural difficulties. Secondary outcomes were child-reported HRQoL, cancer-specific HRQoL, child confidence, caregiver burden, and treatment anxiety. Measures were completed pre- and immediately post-intervention, and at 13 and 26-weeks follow-up. Change over time was analysed using multilevel modelling. Acceptability questionnaires rated the intervention on benefits, recommendations, and barriers to participation. RESULTS The intervention significantly improved parent-reported child HRQoL but did not have a significant effect on other outcomes. Acceptability of the intervention was high. CONCLUSIONS This study provides initial evidence that interactive group psychoeducation is acceptable to families and improves HRQoL in children with leukaemia. Difficulties with recruitment removed power to detect effect sizes that are plausible for psychoeducational interventions. PRACTISE IMPLICATIONS Further studies to explore the potential of psychoeducation to improve outcomes for children with leukaemia and an examination of barriers to participation within this population are warranted.

Abstract
Background: Computer-based cognitive rehabilitation programs may help adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients with cancer-related cognitive impairment. This pilot study investigated the feasibility of cognitive rehabilitation as a preventive intervention for AYA patients receiving chemotherapy. Explorative objectives included the correlation of cognitive performance with serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Methods: This pilot prospective study included English-speaking patients 12-25 years of age with a fist diagnosis of cancer requiring chemotherapy. Participants enrolled in the intervention arm participated in a computer-based neurocognitive training program for 20-30 minutes daily for 16 weeks. Outcome measures, including engagement with and completion of computerized neurocognitive testing and serum BDNF levels, were obtained within the first month following diagnosis, ∼16 and 24 weeks from enrollment. Results: Fourteen of 18 eligible patients provided consent, with 7 patients assigned to each the intervention arm and nonintervention arm. Seventy-one percent of the patients in the intervention arm completed at least 80% of the required activities. Compared to baseline, patients in the nonintervention arm demonstrated higher prevalence of impairment in four of the six cognitive domains (processing speed, visual attention, attention/working memory, and executive function) at the end of the study period. There was a nonstatistically significant reduction of serum BDNF levels over time, which was observed in both intervention and nonintervention arms. Conclusion: This pilot study provides some evidence that it is feasible for AYAs with new cancer diagnoses to receive standardized cognitive rehabilitation. Patients receiving cognitive activities experienced less impairment in numerous cognitive domains.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Survivors of childhood leukemia, especially those from low socioeconomic status households, often experience persistent neurocognitive and academic impairment. This study adapted an existing parent training intervention to improve outcomes for low-acculturated, Spanish-speaking Latino parents of children with leukemia and pilot tested that intervention for feasibility. METHODS Semistructured interviews were conducted with a focus group of 20 Latino parents of children treated for leukemia. Ten Latino families participated in a pilot study of the adapted parenting intervention, consisting of eight sessions over 6 months. RESULTS Focus groups revealed that parents unanimously supported a parenting intervention but barriers to participation included time constraints, transportation issues, and anxiety in the hospital environment. The parents also highlighted cultural factors that could contribute to the health disparity, such as lack of knowledge and efficacy in facilitating their child's progress with learning and school. In the pilot study, adherence was 90%, establishing feasibility, and the adapted intervention was considered beneficial. The median parenting efficacy scores improved from preintervention to postintervention (median 3.40 vs. 3.94; p < .011), as did parent-reported school functioning of the child (median 50.00 vs. 60.00; p = .088). CONCLUSIONS This study addressed a health disparity by culturally adapting a parenting intervention, which was designed to improve school functioning, to meet the needs and preferences of low-acculturated, Spanish-speaking families of children with leukemia in Southern California. The pilot study demonstrated that the adapted intervention is feasible and acceptable in the target population. A larger trial is underway to test the efficacy of this adapted parenting intervention.

Abstract
Research shows promise for cognitive interventions for children diagnosed with brain tumors. Interventions have been delivered approximately 5 years postdiagnosis on average, yet recent evidence shows cognitive deficits may appear near diagnosis. The present study assessed the feasibility and initial effects of working memory training in children with brain tumors delivered soon after diagnosis and followed 2 years postdiagnosis. Children completed baseline assessments 10 months postdiagnosis and were randomized to complete adaptive or nonadaptive (i.e., control) Cogmed Working Memory Training. Children were administered the WISC-IV Working Memory Index (WMI) and NIH Toolbox Cognitive Battery (NTCB), and parents completed attentional and executive function measures at four time points. On average, participants completed half of prescribed Cogmed sessions. Retention for the three follow-up assessments proved difficult. For both Cogmed groups, WMI and NTCB scores significantly improved immediately postintervention compared to baseline scores. Significant differences were not maintained at the remaining follow-ups. There was preliminary evidence for improved executive function at the final follow-up on parent-reported measures. Working memory training closer to diagnosis proved difficult, though results suggest evidence of cognitive improvement. Future studies should continue to examine potentially efficacious interventions for children with brain tumors and optimal delivery windows to maximize impact.

Abstract
Central nervous system tumors are extremely rare in the pediatric population and molecularly heterogeneous. Growing scientific research and clinical practice experience are improving medical therapies to increase survival outcomes and quality of life and reduce side effects. The 2019 Neurobiology of Disease in Children Symposium, held in conjunction with the 48th annual meeting of the Child Neurology Society, aimed to (1) describe molecular advances in tumor classification, (2) better understand the evolution of targeted therapies, and (3) more clearly formulate a treatment plan for patients. The article summarizes the presentations and includes an edited transcript of a panel discussion.

Abstract
Individuals treated for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have a high survival rate. This fact, however, may lead to neurocognitive impairments in survivors, as shown in some studies. The prefrontal cortex and executive functions seem to be particularly vulnerable due to the late maturation in the development process. Executive impairments have been associated with poorer quality of life in childhood cancer survivors. A systematic review was carried out with studies that assessed executive functions in childhood ALL survivors.\ Studies were collected from five electronic databases: MEDLINE (PubMed); PsycInfo; WebOfScience; LILACS and IBECS. Eighty-four studies were retrieved from the database search, of which 50 were read in full and 26 met the inclusion criteria. The studies were heterogeneous as to the instruments used to assess executive function, the skills assessed and the comparison methods. Despite some discrepancies, ALL survivors seem to exhibit poorer executive functioning than typical controls, but this result did not hold true when subjects were compared to normative mean. Changes in brain structure and dynamics resulting from the disease itself, the toxicity of the treatment and difficulties in coping with the stress during treatment may be related to executive impairments in ALL survivors. Discussion proposed standardized methods and measures for assessing executive functioning in children during and after ALL treatment.

Abstract
As a child and adolescent neuropsychology service based within a paediatric psychology team at a large teaching hospital, we meet children and young people across the age range who experience cognitive impairment as a result of long-term health conditions or traumatic brain injury. We have a remit of providing a neuropsychological assessment and report. Typically, a neuropsychology report includes recommendations for home and for school. However, research suggests that their uptake is variable and depends on the understanding and resources of families and school systems. As a stretched service, we have very limited capacity to follow the work through to the extent that we might like. Therefore, we are always seeking effective ways to support the ongoing adaptation and implementation of the assessment recommendations in the child's various day-to-day contexts. We address both the cognitive functioning and the psychological well-being of the child as a unified whole. Drawing on systemic ideas influences our communications with children, families, schools and the medical teams in ways which help bridge the gap between hospital-based assessment and everyday life. This article describes how we are integrating our systemic and neurodevelopmental perspectives to make the assessment and the findings a meaningful intervention in themselves. We consider ways of sharing neuropsychology findings which promote the child's psychological well-being in their different contexts: hospital, home, school, community and culture.

Abstract
Aim To explore how an AV1 telepresence robot helps school-aged children and adolescents with cancer to remain socially and academically connected with their school classes during cancer treatment. Design Qualitative pilot study. Methods Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with school-aged children and adolescents (N = 3, 12-14 years) diagnosed with cancer, their parents (N = 3), teachers (N = 2), classmates (12-14 years, N = 15, focus group interviews) and healthcare professionals (N = 4). Participant observation was performed in the child or adolescents' homes and in the classrooms during education participation via an AV1 telepresence robot. Results Five themes emerged: expectations, sociality, learning, spatiality and technology. Participants experienced the robots as facilitating social interaction processes with classmates and inclusion in learning activities, reducing their sense of loneliness and lacking behind educationally. Nevertheless, multiple factors determine whether the robot is perceived as exclusive, including the technical functionality of the robot, spatiality in the classroom and mutual expectations of the parties involved.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Tumors of the cerebellum are the most common brain tumors in children. Modern treatment and aggressive surgery have improved the overall survival. Consequently, growing numbers of survivors are at high risk for developing adverse and long-term neurological deficits including deficits of cognition, behavior, speech, and language. Post-operative cerebellar mutism syndrome (pCMS) is a well-known and frequently occurring complication of cerebellar tumor surgery in children. In the acute stage, children with pCMS may show deterioration of cerebellar motor function as well as pyramidal and cranial neuropathies. Most debilitating is the mutism or the severe reduction of speech and a range of neurobehavioral symptoms that may occur. In the long term, children that recover from pCMS continue to have more motor, behavioral, and cognitive problems than children who did not develop pCMS after cerebellar tumor surgery. The severity of these long-term sequelae seems to be related to the length of the mute phase. AIM OF THIS NARRATIVE REVIEW The impact of pCMS on patients and families cannot be overstated. This contribution aims to discuss the present knowledge on the natural course, recovery, and rehabilitation of children with pCMS. We suggest future priorities in developing rehabilitation programs in order to improve the long-term quality of life and participation of children after cerebellar tumor surgery and after pCMS in particular.

Abstract
This systematic review identified empirically supported evidence of effective cognitive intervention for children with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and included clinical practice guidelines and recommendations for intervention of attention, memory and executive functioning. Databases included: PsycARTICLES; MEDLINE; PubMed; PsycINFO; PSYCHextra; Ovid; PsychBite; CINAHL and EMBASE. Abstracts and full text articles were reviewed by two independent authors. Articles reporting on a cognitive intervention for children aged 4-19 years with a primary diagnosis of ABI were included. 25 articles were identified by both reviewers (1 00% inter-rater agreement), with the last search conducted in June 201 9. Articles were assigned to one of four categories of primary intervention: (1) Attention and Memory; (2) Executive Functioning; (3) Attention, Memory, and Executive Functioning or (4) Multi-Model Comprehensive Combined Approaches. Articles were critically appraised and level of evidence was determined according to established quality methodology criteria. Of the 25 articles evaluated, nine articles were rated Class 1, eight Class 11, and nine Class 111. One practice standard and one practice option was provided. Key suggestions included using more homogeneous samples in terms of age and injury characteristics (e.g., nature and severity of ABI, age at ABI) and incorporating long-term monitoring of outcome. Interventionalists must consider the dynamic nature of brain and cognitive development and the changing environmental needs of children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As many as 95.7% of children diagnosed with a brain tumor will experience persistent late effects as adults. These include difficulties with general executive functions, lower IQ, and mental fatigue, which may negatively affect school performance. METHODS Through the Swedish Childhood Cancer Registry, we identified 475 children born between 1988 and 1996, diagnosed with a brain tumor before their 15th birthday. School grades in "Swedish," "mathematics," and "English," if their graduation was delayed, and qualification for school years 10-12 were compared with 2197 matched controls. Furthermore, we checked for interaction effects between sex and age at diagnosis, and possible effects of tumor grade (high or low) as well as parents' education. RESULTS Children treated for a brain tumor performed worse in the subjects compared to controls and also had delayed graduation to a greater extent. Fewer children treated for a brain tumor than controls qualified for school years 10-12. Children treated at a young age, especially females, and children whose parents have low education seem to be at particular risk. Unexpectedly, there were no differences in outcomes between survivors with high- and low-grade tumors. CONCLUSIONS It is important that schools provide regular pedagogical assessment and individualized support to meet the different needs of children treated for a brain tumor. Children treated for low-grade tumors do not perform better than children treated for high-grade tumors, despite the lighter treatment, and hence require the same attention and support.

Abstract
Currently, there are an estimated 400,000 long-term survivors of childhood cancer in the United States. Chronic leukoencephalopathy is a potential devastating late effect that can manifest as a range of neurological and neurocognitive sequelae. Survivors of the acute lymphocytic leukemia, central nervous system tumors, and stem cell transplant have frequently been exposed to cranial radiation, systemic and intrathecal chemotherapy, which places them at risk of developing chronic leukoencephalopathy. Defining leukoencephalopathy and its neuroimaging characteristics, the population of survivors at risk, its long-term consequences, and identifying prevention and intervention strategies can potentially mitigate the morbidity of these survivors. Better understanding of those at risk of leukoencephalopathy and its symptoms can lead to an improved quality of life for these cancer survivors.

Abstract
Cranial irradiation is used in combination with other therapies as a treatment for brain tumours and is thought to contribute to long-term cognitive deficits. Several rodent models have demonstrated that these cognitive deficits may be correlated with damage to neural progenitor cells in the subventricular zone (SVZ) and dentate gyrus (DG), the two neurogenic niches of the brain. Studies in rodent models typically assess the proliferating progenitor population, but rarely investigate the effect of cranial irradiation on the neural stem cell pool. Further, few studies evaluate the effects in juveniles, an age when children typically receive this treatment. Herein, we examine the cellular and behavioural effects of juvenile cranial irradiation on stem and progenitor populations in the two neurogenic regions of the brain and assess cognitive outcomes. We found regionally distinct effects of cranial irradiation in the juvenile brain. In the SVZ, we observed a defect in the stem cell pool and a concomitant decrease in proliferating cells that were maintained for at least one week. In the DG, a similar defect in the stem cell pool and proliferating cells was observed and persisted in the stem cell population. Finally, we demonstrated that cranial irradiation resulted in late cognitive deficits. This study demonstrates that juvenile cranial irradiation leads to regionally distinct defects in the stem and progenitor populations, and late cognitive deficits, which may be important factors in determining therapeutic targets and timing of interventions following cranial irradiation.

Abstract
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is among the most prevalent birth defects in the United States. Given that children with CHD are at risk for differences with development, learning, and psychosocial functioning, effective intervention becomes a central tenant of recommendations following neuropsychological consultation and evaluation. The primary focus of this review is to summarize available interventions for children and adolescents with CHD. The existing CHD literature has concentrated on early developmental services, psychopharmacological treatment, and need for academic supports. The literature is limited with regard to intervention studies that target cognitive deficits and psychosocial difficulties. To address this discrepancy, efficacious interventions that have been used to mitigate these concerns within other medical groups are also discussed in an effort to provide options for alternative recommendations and services. The current paper is intended to facilitate comprehensive care for cardiac patients by providing clinicians with a review of the available intervention literature, as well as potential interventions that may serve as supplemental strategies in the interim.

Abstract
This paper updates guidelines for effective treatments of children with specific types of acquired brain injury (ABI) published in 2007 with more recent evidence. A systematic search was conducted for articles published from 2006 to 2017. Full manuscripts describing treatments of children (post-birth to 18) with acquired brain injury were included if study was published in peer-reviewed journals and written in English. Two independent reviewers and a third, if conflicts existed, evaluated the methodological quality of studies with an Individual Study Review Form and a Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist. Strength of study characteristics was used in development of practice guidelines. Fifty-six peer-reviewed articles, including 27 Class I studies, were included in the final analysis. Established guidelines for writing practice recommendations were used and 22 practice recommendations were written with details of potential treatment limitations. There was strong evidence for family/caregiver-focused interventions, as well as direct interventions to improve attention, memory, executive functioning, and emotional/behavioural functioning. A majority of the practice standards and guidelines provided evidence for the use of technology in delivery of interventions, representing an important trend in the field.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Compromised integrity of the brain due to paediatric acquired brain injury (pABI) has been associated with cognitive impairment, particularly executive dysfunction, in addition to somatic and emotional symptoms and reduced everyday function. Goal Management Training (GMT) is a cognitive rehabilitation intervention for improving executive function (EF) that has received empirical support in studies of adults with ABI. The purpose of the present study is to determine the efficacy of a recently developed paediatric version of GMT (pGMT) for children and adolescents with ABI and reported executive dysfunction. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This study protocol describes a parallel randomised controlled trial including allocation concealment and assessor blinding. Eighty survivors after pABI, aged 10-17 years at the time of intervention, will be recruited. Participants will be randomly allocated to either pGMT (n=40) or a psychoeducative control intervention (n=40; paediatric Brain Health Workshop). Both interventions consist of seven group sessions for participants and parents, followed by external cueing and telephone counselling. The study also includes involvement of teachers. Assessments will be performed at baseline, immediately postintervention and at 6 months' follow-up. Primary outcome measure will be changes in daily life EF as reported by parents (The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function). Secondary outcomes include other assessments of EF (neuropsychological tests and questionnaires). Furthermore, we aim to assess generalisation effects of pGMT on other cognitive functions, as well as emotional, behavioural, adaptive and family function, academic performance, fatigue and quality of life. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Results from this study will be disseminated to relevant research, clinical, health service and patient communities through publications in peer-reviewed and popular science journals, in addition to presentations at scientific conferences. The study will be conducted in accordance with the Helsinki declaration and the Ethical Research Involving Children (ChildWatch International and Unicef). In accordance to Good Clinical Practice our study includes safety and quality monitoring guarantees in compliance with research ethics and safety. The trial will be reported in accordance with the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials 2010 statement and Standard Protocol Items for Reporting in Trials recommendations, in addition to being registered at ClinicalTrials.gov. The study has been approved by the Regional Committees for Medical and Health Research Ethics Norway (2017/772). TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT03215342.

Abstract
Introduction Multidisciplinary rehabilitation interventions are considered to be a need for children with acquired brain injury (ABI), in order to remediate the important sequelae and promote adjustment. Technology-based treatments represent a promising field inside the rehabilitation area, as they allow delivering interventions in ecological settings and creating amusing exercises that may favor engagement. In this work, we present an overview of remote technology-based training programs (TP) addressing cognitive and behavioral issues delivered to children with ABI and complement it with the results of a meta-analytic exploration. Evidence Acquisition We performed the review process between January and February 2019. 32 studies were included in the review, of which 14 were further selected to be included in the meta-analysis on TP efficacy. Evidence Synthesis Based on the review process, the majority of TP addressing cognitive issues and all TP focusing on behavioral issues were found to be effective. Two meta-analytic models examining the means of either cognitive TP outcomes or behavioral TP outcomes as input outcome yielded a nonsignificant effect size for cognitive TP and a low-moderate effect size for behavioral TP. Additional models on outcomes reflecting the greatest beneficial effects of TP yielded significant moderate effect sizes for both types of TP. Nevertheless, consistent methodological heterogeneity was observed, pointing to cautious interpretation of findings. A subgroup analysis on visuospatial skill outcomes showed a smaller yet significant effect size of cognitive TP, with low heterogeneity, providing a more reliable estimation of overall cognitive TP effects. Conclusions Promising results on remote cognitive and behavioral TP efficacy emerged both at the review process and at the meta-analytic investigation. Nevertheless, the high heterogeneity that emerged across studies prevents us from drawing definite conclusions. Further research is needed to identify whether specific training characteristics and population subgroups are more likely to be associated with greater training efficacy.

Abstract
Microstructural asymmetry of the brain can provide more direct causal explanations of functional lateralization than can macrostructural asymmetry. We performed a cross-sectional diffusion imaging study of 314 patients treated for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) at a single institution and 92 healthy controls. An asymmetry index based on diffusion metrics was computed to quantify brain microstructural asymmetry. The effects of age and the asymmetry metrics of the two cohorts were examined with t-tests and linear models. We discovered two new types of microstructural asymmetry. Myelin-related asymmetry in controls was prominent in the back brain (89% right), whereas axon-related asymmetry occurred in the front brain (67% left) and back brain (88% right). These asymmetries indicate that white matter is more mature and more myelinated in the left back brain, potentially explaining the leftward lateralization of language and visual functions. The asymmetries increase throughout childhood and adolescence (P = 0.04) but were significantly less in patients treated for ALL (P<0.01), especially in younger patients. Our results indicate that atypical brain development may appear long before patients treated with chemotherapy become symptomatic.

Abstract
Youth with brain tumors are at risk for late effects. Families report that survivors' difficulties with peer relationships are among the most distressing and impactful on quality of life. As such, interventions have been designed to improve social functioning. The objective was to review the nine published social skills intervention studies for survivors of brain tumors with regard to study design, participation rates, skills targeted, assessment measures, and outcomes. Results of this review were used to discuss future directions, with a focus on alternative approaches to inclusion criteria (including developmental considerations and screening for weaknesses), intervention timing and modality.

Abstract
The late neurocognitive and psychosocial effects of treatment for pediatric brain tumor (PBT) represent important areas of clinical focus and ongoing research. Neurocognitive sequelae and associated problems with learning and socioemotional development negatively impact PBT survivors' overall health-related quality of life, educational attainment and employment rates. Multiple factors including tumor features and associated complications, treatment methods, individual protective and vulnerability factors and accessibility of environmental supports contribute to the neurocognitive and psychosocial outcomes in PBT survivors. Declines in overall measured intelligence are common and may persist years after treatment. Core deficits in attention, processing speed and working memory are postulated to underlie problems with overall intellectual development, academic achievement and career attainment. Additionally, psychological problems after PBT can include depression, anxiety and psychosocial adjustment issues. Several intervention paradigms are briefly described, though to date research on innovative, specific and effective interventions for neurocognitive late effects is still in its early stages. This article reviews the existing research for understanding PBT late effects and highlights the need for innovative research to enhance neurocognitive and psychosocial outcomes in PBT survivors.

Abstract
Recent research has demonstrated that survivors of childhood cancer are at risk for a myriad of late effects that affect physical and mental quality of life. We discuss the patterns and prevalence of neurocognitive problems commonly experienced by survivors of CNS tumors and acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the two most commonly researched cancer diagnoses. Research documenting the direct effects of tumor location and treatment type and intensity is presented, and patient characteristics that moderate outcomes (eg, age at diagnosis and sex) are discussed. Potential biologic mechanisms of neurotoxic treatment exposures, such as cranial irradiation and intrathecal and high-dose antimetabolite chemotherapy, are reviewed. Genetic, brain imaging, and neurochemical biomarkers of neurocognitive impairment are discussed. Long-term survivors of childhood cancer are also at risk for physical morbidity (eg, cardiac, pulmonary, endocrine) and problems with health behaviors (eg, sleep); research is reviewed that demonstrates these health problems contribute to neurocognitive impairment in survivors with or without exposure to neurotoxic therapies. We conclude this review with a discussion of literature supporting specific interventions that may be beneficial in the treatment of survivors who already experience neurocognitive impairment, as well as in the prevention of impairment manifestation.
