Fast heating of ultrahigh-density plasma as a step towards laser fusion ignition

Demonstration of stable, long-term operation of a nanosecond pulsed DPSSL at 10 J, 100 Hz

We report on stable, long-term operation of a diode-pumped solid-state laser (DPSSL) amplifying 15 ns pulses at 1029.5 nm wavelength to 10 J energy at 100 Hz pulse rate, corresponding to 1 kW average power, with 25.4% optical-to-optical efficiency. The laser was operated at this level for over 45 minutes (∼3 · 105 shots) in two separate runs with a rms energy stability of 1%. The laser was also operated at 7 J, 100 Hz for 4 hours (1.44 · 106 shots) with a rms long-term energy stability of 1% and no need for user intervention. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that long-term reliable amplification of a kW-class high energy nanosecond pulsed DPSSL at 100 Hz has been demonstrated.

Swept coded aperture real-time femtophotography

Single-shot real-time femtophotography is indispensable for imaging ultrafast dynamics during their times of occurrence. Despite their advantages over conventional multi-shot approaches, existing techniques confront restricted imaging speed or degraded data quality by the deployed optoelectronic devices and face challenges in the application scope and acquisition accuracy. They are also hindered by the limitations in the acquirable information imposed by the sensing models. Here, we overcome these challenges by developing swept coded aperture real-time femtophotography (SCARF). This computational imaging modality enables all-optical ultrafast sweeping of a static coded aperture during the recording of an ultrafast event, bringing full-sequence encoding of up to 156.3 THz to every pixel on a CCD camera. We demonstrate SCARF's single-shot ultrafast imaging ability at tunable frame rates and spatial scales in both reflection and transmission modes. Using SCARF, we image ultrafast absorption in a semiconductor and ultrafast demagnetization of a metal alloy.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in the Strongly Relativistic Regime

Stable transport of laser beams in highly overdense plasmas is of significance in the fast ignition of inertial confinement fusion, relativistic electron generation, and powerful electromagnetic emission, but hard to realize. Early in 1996, Harris proposed an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) mechanism, analogous to the concept in atomic physics, to transport a low-frequency (LF) laser in overdense plasmas aided by a high-frequency pump laser. However, subsequent investigations show that EIT cannot occur in real plasmas with boundaries. Here, our particle-in-cell simulations show that EIT can occur in the strongly relativistic regime and result in stable propagation of a LF laser in bounded plasmas with tens of its critical density. A relativistic three-wave coupling model is developed, and the criteria and frequency passband for EIT occurrence are presented. The passband is sufficiently wide in the strongly relativistic regime, allowing EIT to work sustainably. Nevertheless, it is narrowed to nearly an isolated point in the weakly relativistic regime, which can explain the quenching of EIT in bounded plasmas found in previous investigations.

Scan-less microscopy based on acousto-optic encoded illumination

Several optical microscopy methods are now available for characterizing scientific and industrial processes at sub-micron resolution. However, they are often ill-suited for imaging rapid events. Limited by the trade-off between camera frame-rate and sensitivity, or the need for mechanical scanning, current microscopes are optimized for imaging at hundreds of frames-per-second (fps), well-below what is needed in processes such as neuronal signaling or moving parts in manufacturing lines. Here, we present a scan-less technology that allows sub-micrometric imaging at thousands of fps. It is based on combining a single-pixel camera with parallelized encoded illumination. We use two acousto-optic deflectors (AODs) placed in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and drive them simultaneously with multiple and unique acoustic frequencies. As a result, orthogonal light stripes are obtained that interfere with the sample plane, forming a two-dimensional array of flickering spots - each with its modulation frequency. The light from the sample is collected with a single photodiode that, after spectrum analysis, allows for image reconstruction at speeds only limited by the AOD's bandwidth and laser power. We describe the working principle of our approach, characterize its imaging performance as a function of the number of pixels - up to 400 × 400 - and characterize dynamic events at 5000 fps.

Optimum design of double-layer target for proton acceleration by ultrahigh intense femtosecond lasers considering relativistic rising edge

Advances in laser technology have led to ever-increasing laser intensities. As a result, in addition to the amplified spontaneous emission and pedestal, it has become necessary to accurately treat the relativistic rising edge component. This component has not needed much consideration in the past because of its not relativistic intensity. In the previous study, a thin contamination layer was blown away from the target by the rear sheath field due to the relativistic rising edge component, and the target bulk was accelerated by the sheath field due to the main pulse. These indicated that the proton acceleration is not efficient in the target normal sheath acceleration by the ultrahigh intense femtosecond laser if the proton-containing layer is as thin as the contamination layer. Here we employ a double-layer target, making the second (rear) layer thick enough not to be blown away by the rising edge, so that the second layer is accelerated by the main pulse. The first layer is composed of heavy ions to reduce the total thickness of the target for efficient proton acceleration. We investigate an optimal design of a double-layer target for proton acceleration by the ultrahigh intense femtosecond laser considering the relativistic rising edge using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. We also discuss how to optimize the design of such a double-layer target and find that it can be designed with two conditions: the first layer is not penetrated by hole boring, and the second layer is not blown away by the rising edge.

High energy, high pulse rate laser operation using crystalline adhesive-free bonded Yb:YAG slabs

We report on the successful amplification of 10 ns pulses to 10 J energy at 10 Hz in a DiPOLE laser amplifier using crystalline Yb:YAG/Cr:YAG composite slabs manufactured using adhesive-free bonding (AFB) technology. We demonstrate that bonded slabs are suitable for operation in high energy cryogenic laser amplifiers. We also report on frequency doubling of the beam amplified in the bonded slabs. When the pulse energy of the output infrared beam is set to 5 J, a pulse energy of 3.9 J is achieved in the green (corresponding to 78% conversion efficiency). Results demonstrate that AFB technology is suitable for producing large-sized gain material slabs and can overcome current limitations in the manufacture of large-aperture gain material pieces. We believe this work will facilitate energy scaling of high energy lasers where aperture scaling of optical elements is not achievable via conventional manufacturing techniques.

Highly efficient harmonic vortex generation from a laser irradiated hollow-cone target

It has been recently reported that ultraviolet harmonic vortices can be produced when a high-power circular-polarized laser pulse travels through a micro-scale waveguide. However, the harmonic generation quenches typically after a few tens of microns of propagation, due to the buildup of electrostatic potential that suppresses the amplitude of the surface wave. Here we propose to use a hollow-cone channel to overcome this obstacle. When traveling in a cone target, the laser intensity at the entrance is relatively low to avoid extracting too many electrons, while the slow focusing by the cone channel subsequently counters the established electrostatic potential, allowing the surface wave to maintain a high amplitude for a much longer distance. According to three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, the harmonic vortices can be produced with very high efficiency >20%. The proposed scheme paves the way for the development of powerful optical vortices sources in the extreme ultraviolet regime-an area of significant fundamental and applied physics potential.

Magnetization of high-density plasma with a jet velocity of hundreds of km/s

High magnetic fields at the kilotesla scale have been experimentally generated and finding methods to fully embed such fields into high-density plasma is interesting for magnetically assisted a fast ignition scheme of inertial confinement fusion, laboratory astrophysics, and magnetically guided fast electron beam for broad applications. We investigate diffusion and embedment of an external magnetic field inwards a high-density plasma by analysis and simulation. By introducing the magnetic Péclet number, dimensional analysis indicates that the magnetizing process is sensitive to the jet velocity, temperature, and size of the plasma and gives a phenomenological scaling law of the magnetic field embedment time with an arbitrary jet velocity. The analytical results are verified by magnetic field simulation and applied in 100-g/cm^{3}, 100-μm-radius plasmas with a jet velocity of 0-400 km/s and a temperature of 50-500 eV, typically adopted in experiments. Attributed to an effective electric field from frame transformation, the magnetic field embedment time can be significantly reduced by one order of magnitude when a jetting plasma is adopted with a velocity of hundreds of kilometers per second, e.g., from 5.5 ns in a static plasma to a 0.5 ns timescale in a jetting plasma of 200 km/s. The promoted embedment process favors for various applications mentioned above.

Diffraction enhanced imaging utilizing a laser produced x-ray source

Image formation by Fresnel diffraction utilizes both absorption and phase-contrast to measure electron density profiles. The low spatial and spectral coherence requirements allow the technique to be performed with a laser-produced x-ray source coupled with a narrow slit. This makes it an excellent candidate for probing interfaces between materials at extreme conditions, which can only be generated at large-scale laser or pulsed power facilities. Here, we present the results from a proof-of-principle experiment demonstrating an effective ∼2 μm laser-generated source at the OMEGA Laser Facility. This was achieved using slits of 1 × 30 μm² and 2 × 40 μm² geometry, which were milled into 30 μm thick Ta plates. Combining these slits with a vanadium He-like 5.2 keV source created a 1D imaging system capable of micrometer-scale resolution. The principal obstacles to achieving an effective 1 μm source are the slit tilt and taper-where the use of a tapered slit is necessary to increase the alignment tolerance. We demonstrate an effective source size by imaging a 2 ± 0.2 μm radius tungsten wire.

FISI: frequency domain integration sequential imaging at 1.26×1013 frames per second and 108 lines per millimeter

High spatial resolution on the image plane (intrinsic spatial resolution) has always been a problem for ultrafast imaging. Single-shot ultrafast imaging methods can achieve high spatial resolution on the object plane through amplification systems but with low intrinsic spatial resolutions. We present frequency domain integration sequential imaging (FISI), which encodes a transient dynamic by an inversed 4f (IFF) system and decodes it using optical spatial frequencies recognition (OFR), which overcomes the limitation of the spatial frequencies recognition algorithm. In an experiment on the process of an air plasma channel, FISI achieved shadow imaging of the channel with a framing rate of 1.26×10¹³ fps and an intrinsic spatial resolution of 108 lp/mm (the spatial resolution on the image plane). Owing to its excellent framing time and high intrinsic spatial resolution, FISI can probe both repeatable and unrepeatable ultrafast phenomena, such as laser-induced damage, plasma physics, and shockwave interactions in living cells with high quality.

Research on the Removal Mechanism of Resin-Based Coatings by Water Jet-Guided Quasi-Continuous Laser Cleaning

Laser cleaning technology has the advantages of being green and efficient and is expected to become the most promising remanufacturing cleaning technology. However, the quasi-continuous laser can easily cause problems, such as a heat-affected zone and a recast layer on the substrate material, which limits the development of laser cleaning technology. The environmentally friendly water jet-guided quasi-continuous laser proposed in this paper is an innovative laser cleaning technology that can remove the resin-based coating on the metal substrate with high quality. The epoxy resin coating on the 304 stainless steel surface was cleaned by a water jet guided quasi continuous laser, and the surface morphology, surface element content, and surface roughness of the cleaning area were tested and analyzed. The removal mechanism of water jet-guided quasi-continuous laser cleaning technology was revealed, and the influence of process parameters on cleaning surface quality was found. The optimal process parameters were as follows: the energy density of the water jet-guided laser 17.5 J/cm2, the cleaning speed 135 mm/s, the cleaning line spacing 0.1 mm, and the laser pulse frequency 900 Hz. Therefore, this study is expected to be an important basis for water jet-guided quasi-continuous laser cleaning technology, and promote the development of water jet-guided laser cleaning technology.

Super-strong magnetic field-dominated ion beam dynamics in focusing plasma devices

High energy density physics is the field of physics dedicated to the study of matter and plasmas in extreme conditions of temperature, densities and pressures. It encompasses multiple disciplines such as material science, planetary science, laboratory and astrophysical plasma science. For the latter, high energy density states can be accompanied by extreme radiation environments and super-strong magnetic fields. The creation of high energy density states in the laboratory consists in concentrating/depositing large amounts of energy in a reduced mass, typically solid material sample or dense plasma, over a time shorter than the typical timescales of heat conduction and hydrodynamic expansion. Laser-generated, high current–density ion beams constitute an important tool for the creation of high energy density states in the laboratory. Focusing plasma devices, such as cone-targets are necessary in order to focus and direct these intense beams towards the heating sample or dense plasma, while protecting the proton generation foil from the harsh environments typical of an integrated high-power laser experiment. A full understanding of the ion beam dynamics in focusing devices is therefore necessary in order to properly design and interpret the numerous experiments in the field. In this work, we report a detailed investigation of large-scale, kilojoule-class laser-generated ion beam dynamics in focusing devices and we demonstrate that high-brilliance ion beams compress magnetic fields to amplitudes exceeding tens of kilo-Tesla, which in turn play a dominant role in the focusing process, resulting either in a worsening or enhancement of focusing capabilities depending on the target geometry.

Photon emission enhancement studies from the interaction of ultraintense laser pulses with shaped targets

We study the photon emission by bremsstrahlung and nonlinear Compton scattering from interaction of ultra-intense laser pulses with cone target and flat foil using particle-in-cell simulations. The simulations are performed for laser pulses interacting with Al and Au targets. The strength of the two mechanisms of photon emission from bremsstrahlung and nonlinear Compton scattering are compared. When an ultra-intense (I>10^{22}W/cm^{2}) laser interacts with a cone and a foil target, photon emission by bremsstrahlung is found to be comparable to that from nonlinear Compton scattering. The obtained electron energy as well as the energy and number of photons emitted were found to be higher in case of cone shaped target compared with that of a foil target. The enhanced photon emission from cone shaped target is attributed to the guiding or collimation of hot electrons towards the cone tip from the self-generated magnetic field and electrostatic field along the cone surface which pushes the hot electrons towards the tip.

Effects of laser paint stripping on oxide film damage of 2024 aluminium alloy aircraft skin

Paint layer was stripped from the 2024 aluminium alloy aircraft skin by either 1000 grit sandpaper or laser with 150 ps pulse width while the laser paint stripping (LPS) process was recorded by a high-speed camera. The surface and cross-section morphologies, chemical compositions and chemical valences of obtained the paint stripping samples were also characterise. The corrosion resistance was determined by the Potentiodynamic Polarization Curve (PPC). On mechanical paint stripping (MPS) samples, a large amount of scratches remained. Surface roughness increased and the oxide film was removed completely. The trace of the laser scan was observable on the surface of LPS samples. Recrystallisation occurred on the LPS surface and eventually formed arrayed micro and sub-micro structures. The oxide film is mainly composed of Al₂O₃ with a thickness about 2.10 µm. The corrosion current density of mechanical and LPS samples are 3.66 ×10^-2 mA·cm^-2 and 6.66×10^-5 mA·cm^-2, respectively. Comparing to MPS which removed all the oxide film and damaged the substrate metal, LPS only damaged the oxide film mildly without damaging metal substrate. The remaining oxide film contributes to a higher corrosion resistance of the LPS sample.

All-optical high spatial-temporal resolution photography with raster principle at 2 trillion frames per second

A novel single-shot ultrafast all-optical photography with raster principle (OPR) that can capture real-time imaging of ultrafast phenomena is proposed and demonstrated. It consists of a sequentially timed module (STM), spectral-shaping module (SSM), and raster framing camera (RFC). STM and SSM are used for linearly encoding frequency-time mapping and system calibration, respectively. The function of the RFC is sampling the target by microlens arrays and framing on the basis of frequency-time-spatial positions conversion. We demonstrated the recording of transient scenes with the spatial resolution of ∼90lp/mm, the frame number of 12 and the frame rate of 2 trillion frames per second (Tfps) in single-shot. Thanks to its high spatial-temporal resolution, high frame rate (maximum up to 10 Tfps or more) and sufficient frame number, our OPR can observe the dynamic processes with complex spatial structure at the atomic time scale (10 fs∼1ps), which is promising for application in plasma physics, shock waves in laser-induced damage, and dynamics of condensed matter materials.

Modeling and Measurement of Thermal Effect in a Flashlamp-Pumped Direct-Liquid-Cooled Split-Disk Nd:LuAG Ceramic Laser Amplifier

In this paper, a model to predict the thermal effects in a flashlamp-pumped direct-liquid-cooled split-disk Nd:LuAG ceramic laser amplifier has been presented. In addition to pumping distribution, the model calculates thermal-induced wavefront aberration as a function of temperature, thermal stress and thermal deformation in the gain medium. Experimental measurements are carried out to assess the accuracy of the model. We expect that this study will assist in the design and optimization of high-energy lasers operated at repetition rate.

Modelling and measurement of thermal stress-induced depolarisation in high energy, high repetition rate diode-pumped Yb:YAG lasers

In this paper, we present a model to predict thermal stress-induced birefringence in high energy, high repetition rate diode-pumped Yb:YAG lasers. The model calculates thermal depolarisation as a function of gain medium geometry, pump power, cooling parameters, and input polarisation state. We show that model predictions are in good agreement with experimental observations carried out on a DiPOLE 100 J, 10 Hz laser amplifier. We show that single-pass depolarisation strongly depends on input polarisation state and pumping parameters. In the absence of any depolarisation compensation scheme, depolarisation varies over a range between 5% and 40%. The strong dependence of thermal stress-induced depolarisation on input polarisation indicates that, in the case of multipass amplifiers, the use of waveplates after every pass can reduce depolarisation losses significantly. We expect that this study will assist in the design and optimisation of Yb:YAG lasers.

Preparations for a European R&D roadmap for an inertial fusion demo reactor

A European consortium of 15 laboratories across nine nations have worked together under the EUROFusion Enabling Research grants for the past decade with three principle objectives. These are: (a) investigating obstacles to ignition on megaJoule-class laser facilities; (b) investigating novel alternative approaches to ignition, including basic studies for fast ignition (both electron and ion-driven), auxiliary heating, shock ignition, etc.; and (c) developing technologies that will be required in the future for a fusion reactor. A brief overview of these activities, presented here, along with new calculations relates the concept of auxiliary heating of inertial fusion targets, and provides possible future directions of research and development for the updated European Roadmap that is due at the end of 2020. Simultaneous measurement of the absolute and relative time delay of a tiled-aperture coherent beam combination via the double-humped spectral beam interferometry

Coherent beam combination (CBC) is a promising technology for achieving several hundred petawatts and even EW-level lasers. However, the measurement of the synchronization error and the time jitter of CBC is one of key technical issues, especially in the few-cycle PW-level laser facilities. In this paper, we demonstrate that the absolute time delay (ATD) and the relative time delay (RTD) for a tiled-aperture CBC can simultaneously be measured by using the double-humped spectral beam interferometry. The experimental study also was demonstrated. A root-mean-square deviation of approximately λ/38 (70 as) and a combining efficiency of 87.3% at 1 Hz closed feedback loop was obtained, respectively. Due to the wide adjustment range and a vast resisting beam energy disturbance capacity, this technique provide an effective and practical solution for measuring simultaneously the ATD and the RTD in the few-cycle PW-level laser pulses CBC.

Double-cone ignition scheme for inertial confinement fusion

While major progress has been made in the research of inertial confinement fusion, significant challenges remain in the pursuit of ignition. To tackle the challenges, we propose a double-cone ignition (DCI) scheme, in which two head-on gold cones are used to confine deuterium-tritium (DT) shells imploded by high-power laser pulses. The scheme is composed of four progressive controllable processes: quasi-isentropic compression, acceleration, head-on collision and fast heating of the compressed fuel. The quasi-isentropic compression is performed inside two head-on cones. At the later stage of the compression, the DT shells in the cones are accelerated to forward velocities of hundreds of km s^-1. The head-on collision of the compressed and accelerated fuels from the cone tips transfer the forward kinetic energy to the thermal energy of the colliding fuel with an increased density. The preheated high-density fuel can keep its status for a period of approximately 200 ps. Within this period, MeV electrons generated by ps heating laser pulses, guided by a ns laser-produced strong magnetic field further heat the fuel efficiently. Our simulations show that the implosion inside the head-on cones can greatly mitigate the energy requirement for compression; the collision can preheat the compressed fuel of approximately 300 g cm^-3 to a temperature above keV. The fuel can then reach an ignition temperature of greater than 5 keV with magnetically assisted heating of MeV electrons generated by the heating laser pulses. Punching holes in light: recent progress in single-shot coded-aperture optical imaging

Single-shot coded-aperture optical imaging physically captures a code-aperture-modulated optical signal in one exposure and then recovers the scene via computational image reconstruction. Recent years have witnessed dazzling advances in various modalities in this hybrid imaging scheme in concomitant technical improvement and widespread applications in physical, chemical and biological sciences. This review comprehensively surveys state-of-the-art single-shot coded-aperture optical imaging. Based on the detected photon tags, this field is divided into six categories: planar imaging, depth imaging, light-field imaging, temporal imaging, spectral imaging, and polarization imaging. In each category, we start with a general description of the available techniques and design principles, then provide two representative examples of active-encoding and passive-encoding approaches, with a particular emphasis on their methodology and applications as well as their advantages and challenges. Finally, we envision prospects for further technical advancement in this field.

Observation of a high degree of stopping for laser-accelerated intense proton beams in dense ionized matter

Intense particle beams generated from the interaction of ultrahigh intensity lasers with sample foils provide options in radiography, high-yield neutron sources, high-energy-density-matter generation, and ion fast ignition. An accurate understanding of beam transportation behavior in dense matter is crucial for all these applications. Here we report the experimental evidence on one order of magnitude enhancement of intense laser-accelerated proton beam stopping in dense ionized matter, in comparison with the current-widely used models describing individual ion stopping in matter. Supported by particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, we attribute the enhancement to the strong decelerating electric field approaching 1 GV/m that can be created by the beam-driven return current. This collective effect plays the dominant role in the stopping of laser-accelerated intense proton beams in dense ionized matter. This finding is essential for the optimum design of ion driven fast ignition and inertial confinement fusion.

A detailed understanding of particle stopping in matter is essential for nuclear fusion and high energy density science. Here, the authors report one order of magnitude enhancement of intense laser-accelerated proton beam stopping in dense ionized matter in comparison with currently used models describing ion stopping in matter.

Sequentially timed all-optical mapping photography boosted by a branched 4f system with a slicing mirror

We present sequentially timed all-optical mapping photography (STAMP) with a slicing mirror in a branched 4f system for an increased number of frames without sacrificing pixel resolution. The branched 4f system spectrally separates the laser light path into multiple paths by the slicing mirror placed in the Fourier plane. Fabricated by an ultra-precision end milling process, the slicing mirror has 18 mirror facets of differing mirror angles. We used the boosted STAMP to observe dynamics of laser ablation with two image sensors which captured 18 subsequent frames at a frame rate of 126 billion frames per second, demonstrating this technique's potential for imaging unexplored ultrafast non-repetitive phenomena.

Ion species discrimination method by linear energy transfer measurement in Fujifilm BAS-SR imaging plate

We have developed a novel discrimination methodology to identify ions in multispecies beams with similar charge-to-mass ratios, but different atomic numbers. After an initial separation by charge-to-mass ratios using co-linear electric and magnetic fields, individual ions can be discriminated by considering the linear energy transfer of ions irradiating a stimulable phosphor plate (Fujifilm imaging plate) by comparison with the Monte Carlo calculation. We apply the method to energetic multispecies laser-driven ion beams and use it to identify silver ions produced by the interaction between a high contrast, high intensity laser pulse; and a sub-micrometer silver foil target. We also show that this method can be used to calibrate the imaging plate for arbitrary ion species in the range of Z ≥ 6 with dE/dx > 0.1 MeV/μm without requiring individual calibration.

Enhancement of laser-focused intensity greater than 10 times through a re-entrant cone in the petawatt regime

A versatile method to enhance the laser pulse intensity by one order of magnitude from 8×10²⁰W/cm² using a single plastic micro-cone target is proposed in this Letter. We found an increase of the initial laser pulse intensity by more than 10 times for a micro-cone tip diameter of 5 µm upon performing two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Numerical simulations of the spatio-temporal electromagnetic field distribution are used to replicate similar dependence of the maximum laser intensity to the cone tip diameter.

Thermal Shock Synthesis of Nanocatalyst by 3D-Printed Miniaturized Reactors

High temperature synthesis and treatments are ubiquitous in chemical reactions and material manufacturing. However, conventional sintering furnaces are bulky and inefficient with a narrow temperature range (<1500 K) and slow heating rates (<100 K min^-1 ), which are undesirable for many applications that require transient heating to produce ideal nanostructures. Herein, a 3D-printed, miniaturized reactor featuring a dense micro-grid design is developed to maximize the material contact and therefore acheive highly efficient and controllable heating. By 3D printing, a versatile, miniaturized reactor with microscale features can be constructed, which can reach a much wider temperature range (up to ≈3000 K) with ultrafast heating/cooling rates of ≈10⁴ K s^-1 . To demonstrate the utility of the design, rapid and batch synthesis of Ru nanoparticles supported in ordered mesoporous carbon is performed by transient heating (1500 K, 500 ms). The resulting ultrafine and uniform Ru nanoparticles (≈2 nm) can serve as a cathode in Li-CO₂ batteries with good cycling stability. The miniaturized reactor, with versatile shape design and highly controllable heating capabilities, provides a platform for nanocatalyst synthesis with localized and ultrafast heating toward high temperatures that is otherwise challenging to achieve.

Single-shot ultrafast imaging attaining 70 trillion frames per second

Real-time imaging of countless femtosecond dynamics requires extreme speeds orders of magnitude beyond the limits of electronic sensors. Existing femtosecond imaging modalities either require event repetition or provide single-shot acquisition with no more than 10¹³ frames per second (fps) and 3 × 10² frames. Here, we report compressed ultrafast spectral photography (CUSP), which attains several new records in single-shot multi-dimensional imaging speeds. In active mode, CUSP achieves both 7 × 10¹³ fps and 10³ frames simultaneously by synergizing spectral encoding, pulse splitting, temporal shearing, and compressed sensing-enabling unprecedented quantitative imaging of rapid nonlinear light-matter interaction. In passive mode, CUSP provides four-dimensional (4D) spectral imaging at 0.5 × 10¹² fps, allowing the first single-shot spectrally resolved fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (SR-FLIM). As a real-time multi-dimensional imaging technology with the highest speeds and most frames, CUSP is envisioned to play instrumental roles in numerous pivotal scientific studies without the need for event repetition.

Multi-frame interferometric imaging with a femtosecond stroboscopic pulse train for observing irreversible phenomena

We describe a high-speed single-shot multi-frame interferometric imaging technique enabling multiple interferometric images with femtosecond exposure time over a 50 ns event window to be recorded, following a single laser-induced excitation event. The stroboscopic illumination of a framing camera is made possible through the use of a doubling cavity that produces a femtosecond pulse train that is synchronized to the gated exposure windows of the individual frames of the camera. The imaging system utilizes a Michelson interferometer to extract phase and ultimately displacement information. We demonstrate the method by monitoring laser-induced deformation and the propagation of high-amplitude acoustic waves in a silicon nitride membrane. The method is applicable to a wide range of fast irreversible phenomena such as crack branching, shock-induced material damage, cavitation, and dielectric breakdown.

Effect of Small Focus on Electron Heating and Proton Acceleration in Ultrarelativistic Laser-Solid Interactions

Acceleration of particles from the interaction of ultraintense laser pulses up to 5×10^{21}  W cm^{-2} with thin foils is investigated experimentally. The electron beam parameters varied with decreasing spot size, not just laser intensity, resulting in reduced temperatures and divergence. In particular, the temperature saturated due to insufficient acceleration length in the tightly focused spot. These dependencies affected the sheath-accelerated protons, which showed poorer spot-size scaling than widely used scaling laws. It is therefore shown that maximizing laser intensity by using very small foci has reducing returns for some applications.

Petapascal Pressure Driven by Fast Isochoric Heating with a Multipicosecond Intense Laser Pulse

Fast isochoric laser heating is a scheme to heat matter with a relativistic intensity (>10^{18}  W/cm^{2}) laser pulse for producing an ultrahigh-energy-density (UHED) state. We have demonstrated an efficient fast isochoric heating of a compressed dense plasma core with a multipicosecond kilojoule-class petawatt laser and an assistance of externally applied kilotesla magnetic fields for guiding fast electrons to the dense plasma. A UHED state of 2.2 PPa is achieved experimentally with 4.6 kJ of total laser energy that is one order of magnitude lower than the energy used in the conventional implosion scheme. A two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation confirmed that diffusive heating from a laser-plasma interaction zone to the dense plasma plays an essential role to the efficient creation of the UHED state.

Thermonuclear fusion triggered by collapsing standing whistler waves in magnetized overdense plasmas

Thermal fusion plasmas initiated by standing whistler waves are investigated numerically by two- and one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. When a standing whistler wave collapses due to the wave breaking of ion plasma waves, the energy of the electromagnetic waves transfers directly to the ion kinetic energy. Here we find that ion heating by use of standing whistler waves is operational even in multidimensional simulations of multi-ion species targets, such as deuterium-tritium (DT) ices and solid ammonia borane (H_{6}BN). The energy conversion efficiency to ions becomes as high as 15% of the injected laser energy, which depends significantly on the target thickness and laser pulse duration. The ion temperature could reach a few tens of keV or much higher if appropriate laser-plasma conditions are selected. DT fusion plasmas generated by this method must be useful as efficient neutron sources. Our numerical simulations suggest that the neutron generation efficiency exceeds 10^{9} n/J per steradian, which is beyond the current achievements of the state-of-the-art laser experiments. Standing whistler-wave heating would expand the experimental possibility for an alternative ignition design of magnetically confined laser fusion and also for more difficult fusion reactions, including the aneutronic proton-boron reaction.

Picosecond-resolution phase-sensitive imaging of transparent objects in a single shot

With the growing interest in the optical imaging of ultrafast phenomena in transparent objects, from shock wave to neuronal action potentials, high contrast imaging at high frame rates has become desirable. While phase sensitivity provides the contrast, the frame rates and sequence depths are highly limited by the detectors. Here, we present phase-sensitive compressed ultrafast photography (pCUP) for single-shot real-time ultrafast imaging of transparent objects by combining the contrast of dark-field imaging with the speed and the sequence depth of CUP. By imaging the optical Kerr effect and shock wave propagation, we demonstrate that pCUP can image light-speed phase signals in a single shot with up to 350 frames captured at up to 1 trillion frames per second. We expect pCUP to be broadly used for a vast range of fundamental and applied sciences.

Paint Removal with Pulsed Laser: Theory Simulation and Mechanism Analysis

This paper studies paint removal using laser technology. A finite element model was created using COMSOL Multiphysics software, and the temperature field generated during the cleaning process was analyzed and verified. Laser paint removal behavior was investigated using a fiber laser, and its mechanism studied by combining Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. In-depth analysis of this relatively new technology could provide the theoretical basis for industrial application. The results of this study show that, when compared to the original paint layer, the infrared absorption spectrum of the cleaned surface had two additional two peaks—1333.36 cm−1 and 678.82 cm−1. In addition, there was a decrease in C element content on the treated surface and an increase in O content. In addition, new organic and complex compounds were formed on the cleaned surface as a result of bond cleavage and rearrangement. Furthermore, paint particles of varying sizes and shapes were produced by the impact of plasma shock. Under high-energy laser irradiation, the paint layer underwent combustion, resulting in spherical nanoparticles of uniform shape.

Direct observation of imploded core heating via fast electrons with super-penetration scheme

Fast ignition (FI) is a promising approach for high-energy-gain inertial confinement fusion in the laboratory. To achieve ignition, the energy of a short-pulse laser is required to be delivered efficiently to the pre-compressed fuel core via a high-energy electron beam. Therefore, understanding the transport and energy deposition of this electron beam inside the pre-compressed core is the key for FI. Here we report on the direct observation of the electron beam transport and deposition in a compressed core through the stimulated Cu Kα emission in the super-penetration scheme. Simulations reproducing the experimental measurements indicate that, at the time of peak compression, about 1% of the short-pulse energy is coupled to a relatively low-density core with a radius of 70 μm. Analysis with the support of 2D particle-in-cell simulations uncovers the key factors improving this coupling efficiency. Our findings are of critical importance for optimizing FI experiments in a super-penetration scheme.

Two-beam coherent combining based on Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification at the repetition of 1 Hz

In this Letter, we report the demonstration of the coherent beam combining (CBC) of two-beam femtosecond laser pulses based on chirped-pulse amplification (CPA). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental realization of coherent combination pulses from Ti:sapphire CPA systems. In this experiment, the combined laser beams operate at a repetition rate of 1 Hz, and a reference laser is introduced to detect the phase error between the sub-beams. Finally, we realize a coherent combining efficiency of 90% which verified the feasibility for CPA CBC. Moreover, the influence of the amplification process on CBC is studied.

Monochromatic 2D Kα Emission Images Revealing Short-Pulse Laser Isochoric Heating Mechanism

The rapid heating of a thin titanium foil by a high intensity, subpicosecond laser is studied by using a 2D narrow-band x-ray imaging and x-ray spectroscopy. A novel monochromatic imaging diagnostic tuned to 4.51 keV Ti Kα was used to successfully visualize a significantly ionized area (⟨Z⟩>17±1) of the solid density plasma to be within a ∼35  μm diameter spot in the transverse direction and 2  μm in depth. The measurements and a 2D collisional particle-in-cell simulation reveal that, in the fast isochoric heating of solid foil by an intense laser light, such a high ionization state in solid titanium is achieved by thermal diffusion from the hot preplasma in a few picoseconds after the pulse ends. The shift of Kα and formation of a missing Kα cannot be explained with the present atomic physics model. The measured Kα image is reproduced only when a phenomenological model for the Kα shift with a threshold ionization of ⟨Z⟩=17 is included. This work reveals how the ionization state and electron temperature of the isochorically heated nonequilibrium plasma are independently increased.

Measurement of the injecting time of picosecond laser in indirect-drive integrated fast ignition experiments using an x-ray streak camera

The injecting time of the picosecond laser in an indirect-drive integrated fast ignition experiment was measured by using an x-ray streak camera. Despite overlapping spatially and temporally in experiments, the soft x-ray signal from the nanosecond laser ablating the inner wall of an Au hohlraum and the hard x-ray signal from the bremsstrahlung radiation of hot electrons generated by a picosecond laser were separated by different image processes by filtering and collimating the two signals differently. The time sequence between the two x-ray signals was analyzed to extract the injection time of the picosecond laser relative to the hohlraum emission. By tracking the neutron yield as a function of the injection time of the picosecond laser, a clear positive correlation between the neutron yield enhancement and the derived injection times was exhibited. The heating effect of the picosecond laser was confirmed. It is concluded that this method could be used to measure the injecting time and validate the picosecond laser injection.

Advanced high resolution x-ray diagnostic for HEDP experiments

High resolution X-ray imaging is crucial for many high energy density physics (HEDP) experiments. Recently developed techniques to improve resolution have, however, come at the cost of a decreased field of view. In this paper, an innovative experimental detector for X-ray imaging in the context of HEDP experiments with high spatial resolution, as well as a large field of view, is presented. The platform is based on coupling an X-ray backligther source with a Lithium Fluoride detector, characterized by its large dynamic range. A spatial resolution of 2 µm over a field of view greater than 2 mm² is reported. The platform was benchmarked with both an X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) and an X-ray source produced by a short pulse laser. First, using a non-coherent short pulse laser-produced backlighter, reduced penumbra blurring, as a result of the large size of the X-ray source, is shown. Secondly, we demonstrate phase contrast imaging with a fully coherent monochromatic XFEL beam. Modeling of the absorption and phase contrast transmission of X-ray radiation passing through various targets is presented.

Magnetized fast isochoric laser heating for efficient creation of ultra-high-energy-density states

Fast isochoric heating of a pre-compressed plasma core with a high-intensity short-pulse laser is an attractive and alternative approach to create ultra-high-energy-density states like those found in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) ignition sparks. Laser-produced relativistic electron beam (REB) deposits a part of kinetic energy in the core, and then the heated region becomes the hot spark to trigger the ignition. However, due to the inherent large angular spread of the produced REB, only a small portion of the REB collides with the core. Here, we demonstrate a factor-of-two enhancement of laser-to-core energy coupling with the magnetized fast isochoric heating. The method employs a magnetic field of hundreds of Tesla that is applied to the transport region from the REB generation zone to the core which results in guiding the REB along the magnetic field lines to the core. This scheme may provide more efficient energy coupling compared to the conventional ICF scheme.

Single-shot ultrafast optical imaging

Single-shot ultrafast optical imaging can capture two-dimensional transient scenes in the optical spectral range at ≥100 million frames per second. This rapidly evolving field surpasses conventional pump-probe methods by possessing the real-time imaging capability, which is indispensable for recording non-repeatable and difficult-to-reproduce events and for understanding physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms. In this mini-review, we survey comprehensively the state-of-the-art single-shot ultrafast optical imaging. Based on the illumination requirement, we categorized the field into active-detection and passive-detection domains. Depending on the specific image acquisition and reconstruction strategies, these two categories are further divided into a total of six sub-categories. Under each sub-category, we describe operating principles, present representative cutting-edge techniques with a particular emphasis on their methodology and applications, and discuss their advantages and challenges. Finally, we envision prospects of technical advancement in this field.

Energy enhancement of the target surface electron by using a 200 TW sub-picosecond laser

One order of magnitude energy enhancement of the target surface electron beams with central energy at 11.5 MeV is achieved by using a 200 TW, 500 fs laser at an incident angle of 72° with a prepulse intensity ratio of 5×10^-6. The experimental results demonstrate the scalability of the acceleration process to high electron energy with a longer (sub-picosecond) laser pulse duration and a higher laser energy (120 J). The total charge of the beam is 400±20  pC(E>2.7  MeV). Such a high orientation and mono-energetic electron jet would be a good method to solve the problem of the large beam divergence in fast ignition schemes and to increase the laser energy deposition on the target core.

Energy transfer dynamics in strongly inhomogeneous hot-dense-matter systems

Direct measurements of energy transfer across steep density and temperature gradients in a hot-dense-matter system are presented. Hot-dense-plasma conditions were generated by high-intensity laser irradiation of a thin-foil target containing a buried metal layer. Energy transfer to the layer was measured using picosecond time-resolved x-ray emission spectroscopy. The data show two x-ray flashes in time. Fully explicit, coupled particle-in-cell and collisional-radiative atomic kinetics model predictions reproduce these observations, connecting the two x-ray flashes with staged radial energy transfer within the target.

Plasma density limits for hole boring by intense laser pulses

High-power lasers in the relativistic intensity regime with multi-picosecond pulse durations are available in many laboratories around the world. Laser pulses at these intensities reach giga-bar level radiation pressures, which can push the plasma critical surface where laser light is reflected. This process is referred to as the laser hole boring (HB), which is critical for plasma heating, hence essential for laser-based applications. Here we derive the limit density for HB, which is the maximum plasma density the laser can reach, as a function of laser intensity. The time scale for when the laser pulse reaches the limit density is also derived. These theories are confirmed by a series of particle-in-cell simulations. After reaching the limit density, the plasma starts to blowout back toward the laser, and is accompanied by copious superthermal electrons; therefore, the electron energy can be determined by varying the laser pulse length.

Demonstration of laser-produced neutron diagnostic by radiative capture gamma-rays

We report a new scenario of the time-of-flight technique in which fast neutrons and delayed gamma-ray signals were both recorded in a millisecond time window in harsh environments induced by high-intensity lasers. The delayed gamma signals, arriving far later than the original fast neutron and often being ignored previously, were identified to be the results of radiative captures of thermalized neutrons. The linear correlation between the gamma photon number and the fast neutron yield shows that these delayed gamma events can be employed for neutron diagnosis. This method can reduce the detecting efficiency dropping problem caused by prompt high-flux gamma radiation and provides a new way for neutron diagnosing in high-intensity laser-target interaction experiments.

A pinhole camera for ultrahigh-intensity laser plasma experiments

A pinhole camera is an important instrument for the detection of radiation in laser plasmas. It can monitor the laser focus directly and assist in the analysis of the experimental data. However, conventional pinhole cameras are difficult to use when the target is irradiated by an ultrahigh-power laser because of the high background of hard X-ray emission generated in the laser/target region. Therefore, an improved pinhole camera has been developed that uses a grazing-incidence mirror that enables soft X-ray imaging while avoiding the effect of hard X-ray from hot dense plasmas.

High-precision active synchronization control of high-power, tiled-aperture coherent beam combining

We propose and demonstrate a high-precision active control technique for tiled-aperture coherent beam combining suitable for high-power laser pulses. The method is a hybrid structure based on the near-field interference fringe technique and single-crystal balanced optical cross-correlation, which enables the active loop to exhibit high accuracy, wide dynamic range, and good capacity for resisting energy disturbance. In the proof-of-principle experiment, we realized an adjustable beam combining bandwidth of approximately 100 Hz (limited by the speed of the piezoelectric transducer) and root-mean-square deviation of approximately λ/51 for two beam channels with a combining efficiency of 93%.
