Polyvinylpyrrolidone-induced anisotropic growth of gold nanoprisms in plasmon-driven synthesis

Plasmonic-mediated SC arylation and SS coupling on nanostructured silver electrodes monitored by in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Plasmon-mediated chemical reaction (PMCR) is a highly attractive field of research. Here we report in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) monitoring of plasmonic-mediated SS bond-forming reaction. The reaction is thought to be a self-coupling reaction proceeding by photoinduced aromatic SC bond arylation. Surprisingly, the SC arylation and SS coupling are found to be occurred on both partially oxidized silver and silver nanoparticles. The results demonstrated that silver oxide or hydroxide and small molecule donor sacrifice agent played a crucial role in the reaction. This work facilitates the in-situ manipulation and characterization of the active silver electrode interface in conjunction with electrochemistry, and also establishes a promising new guideline for surface plasmon resonance photocatalytic reactions on metal nanostructures with high efficiency.

Plasmon-Induced Hot Electrons in Nanostructured Materials: Generation, Collection, and Application to Photochemistry

Plasmon refers to the coherent oscillation of all conduction-band electrons in a nanostructure made of a metal or a heavily doped semiconductor. Upon excitation, the plasmon can decay through different channels, including nonradiative Landau damping for the generation of plasmon-induced energetic carriers, the so-called hot electrons and holes. The energetic carriers can be collected by transferring to a functional material situated next to the plasmonic component in a hybrid configuration to facilitate a range of photochemical processes for energy or chemical conversion. This article centers on the recent advancement in generating and utilizing plasmon-induced hot electrons in a rich variety of hybrid nanostructures. After a brief introduction to the fundamentals of hot-electron generation and decay in plasmonic nanocrystals, we extensively discuss how to collect the hot electrons with various types of functional materials. With a focus on plasmonic nanocrystals made of metals, we also briefly examine those based upon heavily doped semiconductors. Finally, we illustrate how site-selected growth can be leveraged for the rational fabrication of different types of hybrid nanostructures, with an emphasis on the parameters that can be experimentally controlled to tailor the properties for various applications.

Rapid and sensitive in situ detection of heavy metals in fish using enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Heavy metals have been widely applied in industry, agriculture, and other fields because of their outstanding physics and chemistry properties. They are non-degradable even at low concentrations, causing irreversible harm to the human and other organisms. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop high accuracy and sensitivity as well as stable techniques for their detection. Raman scattering spectroscopy and atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) were used parallelly to detect heavy metal ions such as Hg, Cd, and Pb of different concentrations in fish samples. The concentration of the heavy metals is varied from 5 ppb to 5 ppm. Despite the satisfactory recoveries of AAS, their drawbacks are imperative for an alternative technique. In Raman scattering spectroscopy, the intensities and areas of the characteristic peaks are increased with increasing the concentration of the heavy metals. For Hg concentration ≥ 1 ppm, a slight shift is observed in the peak position. The obtained values of peak intensity and peak area are modeled according to Elvoich, Pseudo-first order, Pseudo-second order, and asymptotic1 exponential model. The best modeling was obtained using the Elovich model followed by the asymptotic1 exponential model. The introduced Raman spectroscopy-based approach for on-site detection of trace heavy metal pollution in fish samples is rapid, low-cost, and simple to implement, increasing its visibility in food safety and industrial applications.

Integrating photothermal and plasmonic catalysis induced by near-infrared light for efficient reduction of 4-nitrophenol

The reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) into 4-aminophenol (4-AP) is an important reaction in both chemical manufacturing and environmental protection. The design of a highly active, multifunctional and reusable catalyst for efficient 4-NP decontamination/valorization is therefore crucial to bring in economic and societal benefits. Herein, we achieve an efficient plasmonic-photothermal catalyst of Pd nanoparticles by growing them on graphene-polyelectrolytes self-assembly nanolayers via an in situ green reduction approach using polyelectrolyte as the reductant. The as-fabricated catalyst shows high catalytic behaviors and good stability (maintained over 92.5 % conversion efficiency after ten successive cycles) for 4-NP reduction under ultra-low catalyst dose. The rate constant and turnover frequency were calculated at 0.197 min-1 and 7.79 mmol g-1 min-1, respectively, which were much higher than those of most reported catalysts. Moreover, the as-prepared catalyst exhibited excellent photothermal conversion efficiency of ∼77 % and boosted 4-NP reduction by ∼2-fold under near-infrared irradiation (NIR). This study provides valuable insights into the design of greener catalytic materials and facilitates the development of multifunctional plasmonic-photothermal catalysts for diverse environmental, chemical, and energy applications using NIR.

Unraveling the Chirality Transfer from Circularly Polarized Light to Single Plasmonic Nanoparticles

Due to their broken symmetry, chiral plasmonic nanostructures have unique optical properties and numerous applications. However, there is still a lack of comprehension regarding how chirality transfer occurs between circularly polarized light (CPL) and these structures. Here, we thoroughly investigate the plasmon-assisted growth of chiral nanoparticles from achiral Au nanocubes (AuNCs) via CPL without the involvement of any chiral molecule stimulators. We identify the structural chirality of our synthesized chiral plasmonic nanostructures using circular differential scattering (CDS) spectroscopy, which is correlated with scanning electron microscopy imaging at both the single-particle and ensemble levels. Theoretical simulations, including hot-electron surface maps, reveal that the plasmon-induced chirality transfer is mediated by the asymmetric distribution of hot electrons on achiral AuNCs under CPL excitation. Furthermore, we shed light on how this plasmon-induced chirality transfer can also be utilized for chiral growth in bimetallic systems, such as Ag or Pd on AuNCs. The results presented here uncover fundamental aspects of chiral light-matter interaction and have implications for the future design and optimization of chiral sensors and chiral catalysis, among others.

Tuning the Chiral Growth of Plasmonic Bipyramids via the Wavelength and Polarization of Light

Circularly polarized light (CPL) is a versatile tool to prepare chiral nanostructures, but the mechanism for inducing enantioselectivity is not well understood. This work shows that the energy and polarization of visible photons can initiate photodeposition at different sites on plasmonic nanocrystals. Here, CPL on achiral gold bipyramids (AuBPs) creates hot holes that oxidatively deposit PbO2 asymmetrically. We show for the first time that the location of PbO2 photodeposition and hence optical dissymmetry depends on the CPL wavelength. Specifically, 488 and 532 nm CPL induce PbO2 growth in the middle of AuBPs, whereas 660 nm CPL induces PbO2 growth at the tips. Our observations show that wavelength-dependent plasmonic field distributions are more important than surface lightning rod effects in localizing plasmon-mediated photochemistry. The largest optical dissymmetry occurs at excitation wavelengths between the transverse and longitudinal resonances of the AuBPs because higher-order modes are required to induce chiral electric fields.

Understanding the Behaviors of Plasmon-Induced Hot Carriers and Their Applications in Photocatalysis

Photocatalysis driven by plasmon-induced hot carriers has been gaining increasing attention. Recent studies have demonstrated that plasmon-induced hot carriers can directly participate in photocatalytic reactions, leading to great enhancement in solar energy conversion efficiency, by improving the catalytic activity or changing selectivity. Nevertheless, the utilization efficiency of hot carriers remains unsatisfactory. Therefore, how to correctly understand the generation and transfer process of hot carriers, as well as accurately differentiate between the possible mechanisms, have become a key point of attention. In this review, we overview the fundamental processes and mechanisms underlying hot carrier generation and transport, followed by highlighting the importance of hot carrier monitoring methods and related photocatalytic reactions. Furthermore, possible strategies for the further characterization of plasmon-induced hot carriers and boosting their utilization efficiency have been proposed. We hope that a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental behaviors of hot carriers can aid in designing more efficient photocatalysts for plasmon-induced photocatalytic reactions.

Contemporary advances in photocatalytic CO2 reduction using single-atom catalysts supported on carbon-based materials

The persistent issue of CO2 emissions and their subsequent impact on the Earth's atmosphere can be effectively addressed through the utilization of efficient photocatalysts. Employing a sustainable carbon cycle via photocatalysis presents a promising technology for simultaneously managing the greenhouse effect and the energy dilemma. However, the efficiency of energy conversion encounters limitations due to inadequate carrier utilization and a deficiency of reactive sites. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have demonstrated exceptional performance in efficiently addressing the aforementioned challenges. This review article commences with an overview of SAC types, structures, fundamentals, synthesis strategies, and characterizations, providing a logical foundation for the design and properties of SACs based on the correlation between their structure and efficiency. Additionally, we delve into the general mechanism and the role of SACs in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Furthermore, we furnish a comprehensive survey of the latest advancements in SACs concerning their capacity to enhance efficiency, long-term stability, and selectivity in CO2 reduction. Carbon-structured support materials such as covalent organic frameworks (COFs), graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs), and graphene-based photocatalysts have garnered significant attention due to their substantial surface area, superior conductivity, and chemical stability. These carbon-based materials are frequently chosen as support matrices for anchoring single metal atoms, thereby enhancing catalytic activity and selectivity. The motivation behind this review article lies in evaluating recent developments in photocatalytic CO2 reduction employing SACs supported on carbon substrates. In conclusion, we highlight critical issues associated with SACs, potential prospects in photocatalytic CO2 reduction, and existing challenges. This review article is dedicated to providing a comprehensive and organized compilation of recent research findings on carbon support materials for SACs in photocatalytic CO2 reduction, with a specific focus on materials that are environmentally friendly, readily accessible, cost-effective, and exceptionally efficient. This work offers a critical assessment and serves as a systematic reference for the development of SACs supported on MOFs, COFs, g-C3N4, graphene, and CTFs support materials to enhance photocatalytic CO2 conversion.

Streamlines of the Poynting Vector and Chirality Flux around a Plasmonic Bowtie Nanoantenna

The streamlines of the energy flux (Poynting vectors) and chirality flux as well as the intensity of the electric field around various plasmonic nanostructures (nanocube, nanocuboid, nanotriangle, hexagonal nanoplate and bowtie nanoantenna) induced by a circularly polarized (CP) or linearly polarized (LP) light were studied theoretically. The boundary element method combined with the method of moment was used to solve a set of surface integral equations, based on the Stratton-Chu formulation, for analyzing the highly distorted electromagnetic (EM) field in the proximity of these nanostructures. We discovered that the winding behavior of these streamlines exhibits versatility for various modes of the surface plasmon resonance of different nanostructures. Recently, using plasmonic nanostructures to facilitate a photochemical reaction has gained significant attention, where the hot carriers (electrons) play important roles. Our findings reveal a connection between the flow pattern of energy flux and the morphology of the photochemical deposition around various plasmonic nanostructures irradiated by a CP light. For example, numerical results exhibit vertically helical streamlines of the Poynting vector around an Au nanocube and transversely twisted-roll streamlines around a nanocuboid. Additionally, the behaviors of the winding energy and chirality fluxes at the gap and corners of a plasmonic bowtie nanoantenna, implying a highly twisted EM field, depend on the polarization of the incident LP light. Our analysis of the streamlines of the Poynting vector and chirality flux offers an insight into the formation of plasmon-enhanced photocatalysis.

Fabrication of heterogeneous bimetallic nanochains through photochemical welding for promoting the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Heterogeneous bimetallic nanochains (NCs) have gained significant attention in the field of catalysis due to their abundant active sites, multi-component synergistic catalytic, and exotic electronic structures. Here, we present a novel approach to synthesize one-dimensional heterogeneous bimetallic nanochains using a local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) based strategy of liquid-phase photochemical welding method containing self-assembly and subsequent welding processes. Initially, we introduce additives that facilitate the self-assembly and alignment of Au nanoparticles (NPs) into orderly lines. Subsequently, the LSPR effect of the Au NPs is stimulated by light, enabling the second metal precursor to overcome the energy barrier and undergo photodeposition in the gap between the arranged Au NPs, thereby connecting the nano-metal particles. This strategy can be extended to the photochemical welding of Au NPs-Ag and Au NRs. Using electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) as a proof-of-concept application, the obtained one-dimensional structure of Au5Pt1 NCs exhibit promoted HER performances, where the mass activity of the Au5Pt1 nanochains is found to be 4.8 times higher than that of Au5Pt1 NPs and 10.4 times higher than that of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalysts. The promoted HER performance is benefited from the electron conduction ability and abundant active sites.

Tensile-Strained Holey Pd Metallene toward Efficient and Stable Electrocatalysis

Noble metal-based metallenes are attracting intensive attention in energy catalysis, but it is still very challenging to precisely control the surface structures of metallenes for higher catalytic properties on account of their intrinsic thermodynamic instability. Herein, the synthesis of tensile-strained holey Pd metallene by oxidative etching is reported using hydrogen peroxide, which exhibits highly enhanced catalytic activity and stability in comparison with normal Pd metallene toward both oxygen reduction reaction and formic acid oxidation. The pre-prepared Pd metallene functions as a catalyst to decompose hydrogen peroxide, and the Pd atoms in amorphous regions of Pd metallene are preferentially removed by the introduced hydrogen peroxide during the etching process. The greatly enhanced ORR activity is mainly determined by the strong electrostatic repulsion between intermediate O* and the dopant O, which balances the adsorption strength of O* on Pd sites, ultimately endowing a weakened adsorption energy of O* on TH-Pd metallene. This work creates a facile and economical strategy to precisely shape metallene-based nanoarchitectures with broad applications for energy systems and sensing devices.

Photothermally heated colloidal synthesis of nanoparticles driven by silica-encapsulated plasmonic heat sources

Using photons to drive chemical reactions has become an increasingly important field of chemistry. Plasmonic materials can provide a means to introduce the energy necessary for nucleation and growth of nanoparticles by efficiently converting visible and infrared light to heat. Moreover, the formation of crystalline nanoparticles has yet to be included in the extensive list of plasmonic photothermal processes. Herein, we establish a light-assisted colloidal synthesis of iron oxide, silver, and palladium nanoparticles by utilizing silica-encapsulated gold bipyramids as plasmonic heat sources. Our work shows that the silica surface chemistry and localized thermal hotspot generated by the plasmonic nanoparticles play crucial roles in the formation mechanism, enabling nucleation and growth at temperatures considerably lower than conventional heating. Additionally, the photothermal method is extended to anisotropic geometries and can be applied to obtain intricate assemblies inaccessible otherwise. This study enables photothermally heated nanoparticle synthesis in solution through the plasmonic effect and demonstrates the potential of this methodology.

Advances in photochemical deposition for controllable synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts

Photochemical deposition has been attracting increasing attention for preparing nano-catalysts due to its mild reaction conditions, simplicity, green and safe characteristics, and potential for various applications in photocatalysis, thermal catalysis, and electrocatalysis. In this review, we provide an overview of recent advances in photochemical deposition methods for fabricating heterogeneous catalysts, and summarize the factors that influence the nucleation and growth of metal nanoparticles during the photochemical process. Specifically, we focus on the various factors including surface defects, crystal facets, surface properties and the surface plasmon effect on the size, morphology and distribution control of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles on semiconductors. The control of the photogenerated charges and the triggered photochemical reactions have been proved to be significant in the photochemical deposition process. Besides, the applications of the obtained catalytic materials in thermal catalysis and electrocatalysis is highlighted, considering that many reviews have covered photocatalysis applications. We first introduce the principle of photodeposition, nucleation and growth theory, and factors affecting photodeposition. Then, we introduce photodeposition methods that can achieve "controlled" photodeposition from a strategic perspective. Finally, we summarize the fruitful results of controlled photodeposition and provide future prospects for the development of controlled photodeposition technologies and methods, as well as the deepening and expansion of applications.

Morphology-Controlled Growth of Crystalline Ag-Pt-Alloyed Shells onto Au Nanotriangles and Their Plasmonic Properties

The surface plasmon resonance of noble-metal nanoparticles depends on nanoscale size, morphology, and composition, and provides great opportunities for applications in biomedicine, optoelectronics, (photo)catalysis, photovoltaics, and sensing. Here, we present the results of synthesizing ternary metallic or trimetallic nanoparticles, Au nanotriangles (Au NTs) with crystalline Ag-Pt alloyed shells, the morphology of which can be adjusted from a yolk-shell to a core-shell structure by changing the concentration of AgNO3 or the concentration of Au NT seeds, while the shell thickness can be precisely controlled by adjusting the concentration of K2PtCl4. By monitoring the growth process with UV-vis spectra and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), the shells on the Au NT-Ag-Pt yolk-shell nanoparticles were found to grow via a galvanic replacement synergistic route. The plasmonic properties of the as-synthesized nanoparticles were investigated by optical absorbance measurements.

Promoting plasmonic photocatalysis with ligand-induced charge separation under interband excitation

Plasmonic nanoparticles have been demonstrated to enhance photocatalysis due to their strong photon absorption and efficient hot-carrier generation. However, plasmonic photocatalysts suffer from a short lifetime of plasmon-generated hot carriers that decay through internal relaxation pathways before being harnessed for chemical reactions. Here, we demonstrate the enhanced photocatalytic reduction of gold ions on gold nanorods functionalized with polyvinylpyrrolidone. The catalytic activities of the reaction are quantified by in situ monitoring of the spectral evolution of single nanorods using a dark-field scattering microscope. We observe a 13-fold increase in the reduction rate with the excitation of d-sp interband transition compared to dark conditions, and a negligible increase in the reduction rate when excited with intraband transition. The hole scavenger only plays a minor role in the photocatalytic reduction reaction. We attribute the enhanced photocatalysis to an efficient charge separation at the gold-polyvinylpyrrolidone interface, where photogenerated d-band holes at gold transfer to the HOMO of polyvinylpyrrolidone, leading to the prolonged lifetime of the electrons that subsequently reduce gold ions to gold atoms. These results provide new insight into the design of plasmonic photocatalysts with capping ligands.

Synthesis of Linear Black Gold Nanostructures Processable as Sunlight and Low-Energy Light Collecting Films for Photo-Thermoelectricity

As one of the effort to cope with the energy crisis and carbon neutrality, utilization of low-grade energy generated indoors (e.g., light) is imperative because this saves building and house energy, which accounts for ≈40% of total energy consumption. Although photovoltaic devices could contribute to energy savings, it is also necessary to harvest heat from indoor lights to generate electricity because the light absorbed by materials is mostly transformed into heat. For daily life uses, materials should not only have high absorptance and low emittance but also be easily processed into various forms. To this end, this work synthesizes black aqueous suspensions containing winding and bent linear gold nanostructures with diameters of 3-5 nm and length-to-diameter ratios of ≈4-10. Their optical and photo-thermal characteristics are understood through experimental and theoretical investigations. Black gold nanostructures are conveniently processed into metal-dielectric films on metal, glass, and flexible substrates. The film on copper has an absorptance of 0.97 and an emittance of 0.08. Under simulated sunlight and indoor LED light illumination, the film has equivalent photo-thermal and photo-thermoelectric performances to a top-tier sunlight-collecting film. This work attempts to modify the film structure to generate more usable electricity from low-energy indoor light.

Tuning size and shape of gold nanoparticles using seed-mediated growth by unfocused femtosecond laser-induced plasma

Gold nanoparticles with tunable size and shape are effectively synthesized with a femtosecond laser using the seed and growth method by reducing a KAuCl₄ solution with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) surfactant as a stabilizer. The sizes of gold nanoparticles, including 7.30 to 9.90, 11.0, 12.0, 14.1, 17.3, 22, 23.0, 24.4, and 27.2 nm, are effectively altered. In addition, the initial shapes of gold nanoparticles (quasi-spherical, triangular, and nanoplate) are also successfully changed. While the reduction effect of an unfocused femtosecond laser can control the size of nanoparticles, the surfactant can influence the growth of nanoparticles and determine their shape. This technology represents a breakthrough for nanoparticle development by not employing strong reducing agents and instead using an environmentally friendly synthesis technique.

Generalization of Self-Assembly Toward Differently Shaped Colloidal Nanoparticles for Plasmonic Superlattices

Periodic superlattices of noble metal nanoparticles  have demonstrated superior plasmonic properties compared to randomly distributed plasmonic arrangements due to near-field coupling and constructive far-field interference. Here, a chemically driven, templated self-assembly process of colloidal gold nanoparticles is investigated and optimized, and the technology is extended toward a generalized assembly process for variously shaped particles, such as spheres, rods, and triangles. The process yields periodic superlattices of homogenous  nanoparticle clusters on a centimeter scale. Electromagnetically simulated absorption spectra and corresponding experimental extinction measurements demonstrate excellent agreement in the far-field for all particle types and different lattice periods. The electromagnetic simulations reveal the specific nano-cluster near-field behavior, predicting the experimental findings provided by surface-enhanced Raman scattering measurements. It turns out that periodic arrays of spherical nanoparticles produce higher surface-enhanced Raman scattering enhancement factors than particles with less symmetry as a result of very well-defined strong hotspots.

Plate-Like Colloidal Metal Nanoparticles

The pseudo-two-dimensional (2D) morphology of plate-like metal nanoparticles makes them one of the most anisotropic, mechanistically understood, and tunable structures available. Although well-known for their superior plasmonic properties, recent progress in the 2D growth of various other materials has led to an increasingly diverse family of plate-like metal nanoparticles, giving rise to numerous appealing properties and applications. In this review, we summarize recent progress on the solution-phase growth of colloidal plate-like metal nanoparticles, including plasmonic and other metals, with an emphasis on mechanistic insights for different synthetic strategies, the crystallographic habits of different metals, and the use of nanoplates as scaffolds for the synthesis of other derivative structures. We additionally highlight representative self-assembly techniques and provide a brief overview on the attractive properties and unique versatility benefiting from the 2D morphology. Finally, we share our opinions on the existing challenges and future perspectives for plate-like metal nanomaterials.

Continuous nucleation of metallic nanoparticles via photocatalytic reduction

Whether in organic synthesis or solar energy conversion, light can be a powerful reagent in chemical reactions and introduce new opportunities for synthetic control including duration, intensity, interval, and energy of irradiation. Here, we report the use of a molecular photosensitizer as a reducing agent in metallic nanoparticle syntheses. Using this approach, we report three key findings. (1) Nanoparticles produced by photocatalytic reduction form via a continuous nucleation mechanism, as opposed to burst and burst-like nucleation processes typically observed in metal nanoparticle syntheses. (2) Because nucleation is continuous, as long as the solution is irradiated (and there remains excess reagents in solution), nanoparticle nucleation can be turned on and off by controlling the timing and duration of irradiation, with no observable particle growth. (3) This synthetic method extends to the formation of bimetallic nanoparticles, which we show also form via a continuous nucleation pathway, and follow predicted patterns of metal incorporation as a function of the magnitude of the difference between the reduction potentials of the two metals. Taken together, these results establish a versatile synthetic method for the formation of multimetallic nanoparticles using visible light.

Active Site Engineering on Plasmonic Nanostructures for Efficient Photocatalysis

Plasmonic nanostructures have shown immense potential in photocatalysis because of their distinct photochemical properties associated with tunable photoresponses and strong light-matter interactions. The introduction of highly active sites is essential to fully exploit the potential of plasmonic nanostructures in photocatalysis, considering the inferior intrinsic activities of typical plasmonic metals. This review focuses on active site-engineered plasmonic nanostructures with enhanced photocatalytic performance, wherein the active sites are classified into four types (i.e., metallic sites, defect sites, ligand-grafted sites, and interface sites). The synergy between active sites and plasmonic nanostructures in photocatalysis is discussed in detail after briefly introducing the material synthesis and characterization methods. Active sites can promote the coupling of solar energy harvested by plasmonic metal to catalytic reactions in the form of local electromagnetic fields, hot carriers, and photothermal heating. Moreover, efficient energy coupling potentially regulates the reaction pathway by facilitating the excited state formation of reactants, changing the status of active sites, and creating additional active sites using photoexcited plasmonic metals. Afterward, the application of active site-engineered plasmonic nanostructures in emerging photocatalytic reactions is summarized. Finally, a summary and perspective of the existing challenges and future opportunities are presented. This review aims to deliver some insights into plasmonic photocatalysis from the perspective of active sites, expediting the discovery of high-performance plasmonic photocatalysts.

Controllable Preparation of Gold Nanocrystals with Different Porous Structures for SERS Sensing

Porous Au nanocrystals (Au NCs) have been widely used in catalysis, sensing, and biomedicine due to their excellent localized surface plasma resonance effect and a large number of active sites exposed by three-dimensional internal channels. Here, we developed a ligand-induced one-step method for the controllable preparation of mesoporous, microporous, and hierarchical porous Au NCs with internal 3D connecting channels. At 25 °C, using glutathione (GTH) as both a ligand and reducing agent combined with the Au precursor to form GTH-Au(I), and under the action of the reducing agent ascorbic acid, the Au precursor is reduced in situ to form a dandelion-like microporous structure assembled by Au rods. When cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (C₁₆TAB) and GTH are used as ligands, mesoporous Au NCs formed. When increasing the reaction temperature to 80 °C, hierarchical porous Au NCs with both microporous and mesoporous structures will be synthesized. We systematically explored the effect of reaction parameters on porous Au NCs and proposed possible reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, we compared the SERS-enhancing effect of Au NCs with three different pore structures. With hierarchical porous Au NCs as the SERS base, the detection limit for rhodamine 6G (R6G) reached 10^-10 M.

Gold Triangular Nanoprisms: Anisotropic Plasmonic Materials with Unique Structures and Properties

As a novel type of anisotropic inorganic nanomaterials, gold triangular nanoprisms (AuTNPs) have been widely studied for their well-defined structures and excellent plasmonic properties. This review starts with synthetic methodology, combing through the early thermal solution method to the mature seed-mediated method and seedless method. The possible mechanisms proposed by predecessors and the problems needed to be solved are also arranged. Along with this, the important morphological evolution process of AuTNPs during synthesis and post-synthesis stages are revealed, which is of great significance for further understanding the structure of AuTNPs and developing new synthesis strategies. Finally, the applications of AuTNPs, especially associated with plasmonic properties, are listed and summarized where surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), catalysis, phototherapy and biosensor are included, so that researchers can quickly comprehend the current situation, and provide a basis for further development and exploration of AuTNPs.

Two-Dimensional Metal Nanostructures: From Theoretical Understanding to Experiment

This paper reviews recent studies on the preparation of two-dimensional (2D) metal nanostructures, particularly nanosheets. As metal often exists in the high-symmetry crystal phase, such as face centered cubic structures, reducing the symmetry is often needed for the formation of low-dimensional nanostructures. Recent advances in characterization and theory allow for a deeper understanding of the formation of 2D nanostructures. This Review firstly describes the relevant theoretical framework to help the experimentalists understand chemical driving forces for the synthesis of 2D metal nanostructures, followed by examples on the shape control of different metals. Recent applications of 2D metal nanostructures, including catalysis, bioimaging, plasmonics, and sensing, are discussed. We end the Review with a summary and outlook of the challenges and opportunities in the design, synthesis, and application of 2D metal nanostructures.

Seed-Mediated Synthesis of Thin Gold Nanoplates with Tunable Edge Lengths and Optical Properties

Thin Au nanoplates show intriguing localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties with potential applications in various fields. The conventional synthesis of Au nanoplates usually involves the formation of spherical nanoparticles or produces nanoplates with large thicknesses. Herein, we demonstrate a synthesis of uniform thin Au nanoplates by using Au-Ag alloy nanoframes obtained by the galvanic replacement of Ag nanoplates with HAuCl₄ as the seeds and a sulfite (SO₃^2-) as a ligand. The SO₃^2- ligand not only complexes with the Au salt for the controlled reduction kinetics but also strongly adsorbs on Au {111} facets for effectively constraining the crystal growth on both basal sides of the Au nanoplates for controlled shape and reduced thicknesses. This seed-mediated synthesis affords Au nanoplates with a thickness of only 7.5 nm, although the thickness increases with the edge length. The edge length can be customizable in a range of 48-167 nm, leading to tunable LSPR bands in the range of 600-1000 nm. These thin Au nanoplates are applicable not only to surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy with enhanced sensitivity and reliability but also to a broader range of LSPR-based applications.

Simultaneous Harvesting of Multiple Hot Holes via Visible-Light Excitation of Plasmonic Gold Nanospheres for Selective Oxidative Bond Scission of Olefins to Carbonyls

Using visible photoexcitation of gold nanospheres we successfully demonstrate the simultaneous harvesting of plasmon-induced multiple hot holes in the complete oxidative scission of the C=C bond in styrene at room temperature to selectively form benzaldehyde and formaldehyde, which is a reaction that requires activation of multiple substrates. Our results reveal that, while extraction of hot holes becomes efficient for interband excitation, harvesting of multiple hot holes from the excited Au nanospheres becomes prevalent only beyond a threshold light intensity. We show that the alkene oxidation proceeded via a sequence of two consecutive elementary steps; namely, a binding step and a cyclic oxometallate transition state as the rate-determining step. This demonstration of plasmon-excitation-mediated harvesting of multiple hot holes without the use of an extra hole transport media opens exciting possibilities, notably for difficult catalytic transformations involving multielectron oxidation processes.

Intermetallic Nanocrystal Discovery through Modulation of Atom Stacking Hierarchy

A library of compositionally and structurally well-defined Au-Cu alloy nanocrystals has been prepared via scanning probe block copolymer lithography. These libraries not only allow one to map compositional and structure space but also the conditions (e.g., cooling rate) required to access specific structures. This approach enabled the realization of a previously unobserved architecture, an intermetallic nanoprism, that is a consequence of hierarchical atom stacking. These structures exhibit distinctive diffraction patterns characterized by non-integer-index, forbidden spots, which serve as a diagnostic indicator of such structures. Inspection of the library's pseudospherical particles reveals a high-strain cubic-tetragonal interfacial configuration in the outer regions of the intermetallic nanocrystals. Since it is costly and time-consuming to explore the nanomaterials phase space via conventional wet-chemistry, this parallel kinetic-control approach, which relies on substrate- and positionally isolated particles, may lead to the rapid discovery of complex nanocrystals that may prove useful in applications spanning catalysis and plasmonic sensing.

A Review on Gold Nanotriangles: Synthesis, Self-Assembly and Their Applications

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with interesting optical properties have attracted much attention in recent years. The synthesis and plasmonic properties of AuNPs with a controllable size and shape have been extensively investigated. Among these AuNPs, gold nanotriangles (AuNTs) exhibited unique optical and plasmonic properties due to their special triangular anisotropy. Indeed, AuNTs showed promising applications in optoelectronics, optical sensing, imaging and other fields. However, only few reviews about these applications have been reported. Herein, we comprehensively reviewed the synthesis and self-assembly of AuNTs and their applications in recent years. The preparation protocols of AuNTs are mainly categorized into chemical synthesis, biosynthesis and physical-stimulus-induced synthesis. The comparison between the advantages and disadvantages of various synthetic strategies are discussed. Furthermore, the specific surface modification of AuNTs and their self-assembly into different dimensional nano- or microstructures by various interparticle interactions are introduced. Based on the unique physical properties of AuNTs and their assemblies, the applications towards chemical biology and sensing were developed. Finally, the future development of AuNTs is prospected.

Large-Area Periodic Arrays of Atomically Flat Single-Crystal Gold Nanotriangles Formed Directly on Substrate Surfaces

The advancement of nanoenabled wafer-based devices requires the establishment of core competencies related to the deterministic positioning of nanometric building blocks over large areas. Within this realm, plasmonic single-crystal gold nanotriangles represent one of the most attractive nanoscale components but where the formation of addressable arrays at scale has heretofore proven impracticable. Herein, a benchtop process is presented for the formation of large-area periodic arrays of gold nanotriangles. The devised growth pathway sees the formation of an array of defect-laden seeds using lithographic and vapor-phase assembly processes followed by their placement in a growth solution promoting planar growth and threefold symmetric side-faceting. The nanotriangles formed in this high-yield synthesis distinguish themselves in that they are epitaxially aligned with the underlying substrate, grown to thicknesses that are not readily obtainable in colloidal syntheses, and present atomically flat pristine surfaces exhibiting gold atoms with a close-packed structure. As such, they express crisp and unambiguous plasmonic modes and form photoactive surfaces with highly tunable and readily modeled plasmon resonances. The devised methods, hence, advance the integration of single-crystal gold nanotriangles into device platforms and provide an overall fabrication strategy that is adaptable to other nanomaterials.

Effect of light at different wavelengths on polyol synthesis of silver nanocubes

Despite the presence of light-sensitive species in the polyol synthesis of silver nanocubes, the influence of light on it has yet to be investigated. Herein, we demonstrated that light radiation, by generating plasmon-based hot electrons and subsequently increasing the reduction rate of Ag⁺ in the system, in addition to enhancing the growth rate of nanocubes, causes twinned seeds, which these seeds are then converted into nanorods and right bipyramids. With shorter, higher energy wavelengths, Ag⁺ reduction progresses more quickly, resulting in structures with more twin planes. The overlap of the excitation wavelength and the band gap of Ag₂S clusters formed in the early stages of synthesis accelerates the rate of reaction at low-energy excitation. According to our findings, the surfactant polyvinylpyrrolidone acts as a photochemical relay to drive the growth of silver nanoparticles. Overall, this work emphasizes the impact of excitation light on polyol synthesis as a technique for generating Ag nanocubes of various sizes.

Plasmonic Hot-Electron-Painted Au@Pt Nanoparticles as Efficient Electrocatalysts for Detection of H2O2

Plasmon-driven catalysis of metal nanostructures has garnered wide interest. Here, a photogenerated plasmonic hot-electron painting strategy was reported to form Au@Pt composite nanoparticles (Au@Pt NPs) with high catalytic reactivity without using reducing agents. Au nanoparticles, including Au nanospheres (Au NSs), Au nanorods (Au NRs), and Au nanobipyramids (Au NBPs), generated hot electrons under localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation, which made the platinum precursor reduced as a consequence that Pt(0) atoms were painted on the surface of Au NPs to form an asymmetric Pt shell outside the plasmonic Au core. Compared with bare Au NPs, Au@Pt NPs exhibited significantly enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward reduction of H₂O₂ due to the bimetallic synergistic effect and great dispersion of Au@Pt NP-modified indium tin oxide (Au@Pt NPs/ITO). It exhibited a linear detection of H₂O₂ in a wide concentration range from 0.5 to 1000 μM with a low detection limit of 0.11 μM (S/N = 3). Therefore, the plasmonic hot-electron-painted Au@Pt NPs represent a novel and simple method for the design of advanced noble asymmetric metal nanomaterials.

Combination of Plasmon-Mediated Photochemistry and Seed-Mediated Methods for Synthesis of Bicomponent Nanocrystals

Plasmon resonances of metal nanocrystals resulted from free electrons oscillating around nanocrystals, leading to a strong electromagnetic field around them. Because these oscillating electrons possess higher energy than the original ones, also known as hot electrons, these were widely used as photocatalysts for various reactions. Also, the strength and distribution of the electromagnetic field around the nanocrystals strongly depended on their morphology and excited irradiation, which led to the reaction environment around nanocrystals being controllable. Here, we integrated the seed-mediated and plasmon-mediated photochemistry methods for fabricating bimetallic and semiconductor-metal nanocrystals with controllable morphologies and compositions of the nanocrystals, resulting from the highly anisotropic reaction environment around the nanocrystals. The highly anisotropic reaction environment around the template nanocrystal was caused by the distribution of electromagnetic fields around it and its exposure area in the reaction solution. This new synthesis method should enable the fabrication of various multicomponent nanocrystals with desirable functions for potential applications, such as photocatalysts, chemical sensors, biosensors, biomedicines, etc.

Molecular Cocatalyst of p-Mercaptophenylboronic Acid Boosts the Plasmon-Mediated Reduction of p-Nitrothiophenol

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) has been demonstrated to be highly effective in the initialization or acceleration of chemical reactions because of its unique optical properties. However, because of the ultrashort lifetime (fs to ps) of plasmon-generated hot carriers, the potential of LSPR in photochemical reactions has not been fully exploited. Herein, we demonstrate an acceleration of the plasmon-mediated reduction of p-nitrothiophenol (PNTP) molecules on the surface of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with in situ Raman spectroscopy. p-Mercaptophenylboronic acid (PMPBA) molecules coadsorbed on AgNP surfaces act as a molecular cocatalyst in the plasmon-mediated reaction, resulting in a boosting of the PNTP reduction. This boosting is attributed to the improved transfer and separation of the plasmon-generated hot carriers at the interface of the AgNPs and coadsorbed PMPBA molecules. Our finding provides a highly simple, cost-effective, and highly effective strategy to promote plasmonic photochemistry by introducing a molecular cocatalyst, and this strategy can be extended to promote various plasmon-mediated reactions.

Single-Particle Insights into Plasmonic Hot Carrier Separation Augmenting Photoelectrochemical Ethanol Oxidation with Photocatalytically Synthesized Pd-Au Bimetallic Nanorods

Understanding the nature of hot carrier pathways following surface plasmon excitation of heterometallic nanostructures and their mechanistic prevalence during photoelectrochemical oxidation of complex hydrocarbons, such as ethanol, remains challenging. This work studies the fate of carriers from Au nanorods before and after the presence of reductively photodeposited Pd at the single-particle level using scattering and emission spectroscopy, along with ensemble photoelectrochemical methods. A sub-2 nm epitaxial Pd⁰ shell was reductively grown onto colloidal Au nanorods via hot carriers generated from surface plasmon resonance excitation in the presence of [PdCl₄]^2-. These bimetallic Pd-Au nanorod architectures exhibited 14% quenched emission quantum yields and 9% augmented plasmon damping determined from their scattering spectra compared to the bare Au nanorods, consistent with injection/separation of intraband hot carriers into the Pd. Absorbed photon-to-current efficiency in photoelectrochemical ethanol oxidation was enhanced 50× from 0.00034% to 0.017% due to the photodeposited Pd. Photocurrent during ethanol oxidation improved 13× under solar-simulated AM1.5G and 40× for surface plasmon resonance-targeted irradiation conditions after photodepositing Pd, consistent with enhanced participation of intraband-excited sp-band holes and desorption of ethanol oxidation reaction intermediates owing to photothermal effects.

Site-selective introduction of MnO2 co-catalyst onto gold nanocubes via plasmon-induced charge separation and galvanic replacement for enhanced photocatalysis

For energy harvesting with plasmonic photocatalysis, it is important to optimize geometrical arrangements of plasmonic nanomaterials, electron (or hole) acceptors, and co-catalysts so as to improve the charge separation efficiency and suppress charge recombination. Here we employ a photocatalytic system with Au nanocubes on TiO2, and introduced MnO2 as an oxidation co-catalyst onto the nanocubes via site-selective oxidation based on plasmon-induced charge separation (PICS). However, it has been known that PbO2 is the only material that can be deposited onto Au nanomaterials through PICS with sufficient site-selectivity. Here we addressed this issue by introducing an indirect approach for MnO2 deposition via site-selective PbO2 deposition and subsequent galvanic replacement of PbO2 with MnO2. The indirect approach gave nanostructures with MnO2 introduced at around the top part, bottom part, or the entire surface of the Au nanocubes on a TiO2 electrode. The activity of those plasmonic photocatalysts was strongly dependent on the location of MnO2. The key to improving the activity is to separate MnO2 from TiO2 to prevent recombination of the positive charges in MnO2 with the negative ones in TiO2.

Methionine-Controlled Impediment of Secondary Nucleation Leading to Nonclassical Growth within Self-Assembled De Novo Gold Nanoparticles

The conventional key steps for seed-mediated growth of noble metal nanostructures involve classical and nonclassical nucleation. Furthermore, the surface of the seed catalytically enhances the secondary nucleation involving Au⁺ to Au⁰ reduction, thus providing in-plane growth of the seed. In contrast to this well-established growth mechanism, herein, we report the unique case of a methionine (Met)-controlled seed-mediated growth reaction, which rather proceeds via impeding secondary nucleation in the presence of citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The interaction between the freshly generated Au⁺ and the thioether group of Met in the medium restricts the secondary nucleation process of further seed-catalyzed Au⁺ reduction to Au⁰. This incomplete conversion of Au⁺, as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, results in a significant enhancement of the zeta (ζ) potential even at low Met concentrations. Nucleation of in situ generated small-sized particles (nAuNPs) takes place on the parent seed surface followed by their segregation from the seed. The self-assembly process of these nAuNPs arises from the aurophilic interaction among the Au⁺. Furthermore, the time-dependent growth of smaller particles to larger-sized particles through assembly and merging within the same self-assembly validates the nonclassical growth. This strategy has been successfully extended toward the seed-mediated growth reaction of AuNPs in the presence of three bio-inspired decameric peptides having varying numbers of Met residues. The study confirms the nucleation strategy even in the presence of a single Met residue in the peptide and also the self-assembly of nucleated particles with increasing Met residues within the peptide.

PVP-coated silver nanocubes as RRS probe for sensitive determination of Haloperidol in real samples

Polyol synthesis of silver nanocubes (Ag NCs) under dark conditions yielded nanoparticles with high uniformity and purity, as well as edge lengths of 42 nm with good stability and scattering cross-section. These nanoparticles were characterized by SEM, TEM, and Uv-vis spectroscopy. The presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a capping agent on the surface of Ag NCs, as well as its satisfactory interaction level with Haloperidol (Hp) as an antipsychotic drug, has led to the use of these nanoparticles as Resonance RayleighScattering (RRS) probe to measure Hp. Indeed, Hp resulted in reducing the RRS signal of Ag NCs, and this change in RRS intensity was linear in the range of 10.0 to 800.0 µg L^-1 of Hp. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were found to be 1.5 and 5.0 µg L^-1, respectively. The influence of interfering species was studied, and it was found that the suggested method has good selectivity and can be used to monitor Hp in actual samples. As a result, this RRS probe operated well in determining Hp in pharmaceutical and human plasma samples with satisfactory recovery.

Surface-Plasmon-Assisted Growth, Reshaping and Transformation of Nanomaterials

Excitation of surface plasmon resonance of metal nanostructures is a promising way to break the limit of optical diffraction and to achieve a great enhancement of the local electromagnetic field by the confinement of optical field at the nanoscale. Meanwhile, the relaxation of collective oscillation of electrons will promote the generation of hot carrier and localized thermal effects. The enhanced electromagnetic field, hot carriers and localized thermal effects play an important role in spectral enhancement, biomedicine and catalysis of chemical reactions. In this review, we focus on surface-plasmon-assisted nanomaterial reshaping, growth and transformation. Firstly, the mechanisms of surface-plasmon-modulated chemical reactions are discussed. This is followed by a discussion of recent advances on plasmon-assisted self-reshaping, growth and etching of plasmonic nanostructures. Then, we discuss plasmon-assisted growth/deposition of non-plasmonic nanostructures and transformation of luminescent nanocrystal. Finally, we present our views on the current status and perspectives on the future of the field. We believe that this review will promote the development of surface plasmon in the regulation of nanomaterials.

Experimental characterization techniques for plasmon-assisted chemistry

Plasmon-assisted chemistry is the result of a complex interplay between electromagnetic near fields, heat and charge transfer on the nanoscale. The disentanglement of their roles is non-trivial. Therefore, a thorough knowledge of the chemical, structural and spectral properties of the plasmonic/molecular system being used is required. Specific techniques are needed to fully characterize optical near fields, temperature and hot carriers with spatial, energetic and/or temporal resolution. The timescales for all relevant physical and chemical processes can range from a few femtoseconds to milliseconds, which necessitates the use of time-resolved techniques for monitoring the underlying dynamics. In this Review, we focus on experimental techniques to tackle these challenges. We further outline the difficulties when going from the ensemble level to single-particle measurements. Finally, a thorough understanding of plasmon-assisted chemistry also requires a substantial joint experimental and theoretical effort.

Nanomechanics of self-assembled surfactants revealed by frequency-modulation atomic force microscopy

Surfactants play a critical role in bottom-up nanotechnologies due to their peculiar nature of controlling the interfacial energy. Since their operational mechanism originates from the molecular-scale formation and disruption processes of molecular assemblies (i.e., micelles), conventional static-mode atomic force microscopy has made a significant contribution to unravel the detailed molecular pictures. Recently, we have successfully developed a local solvation measurement technique based on three-dimensional frequency-modulation atomic force microscopy, whose spatial resolution is not limited by jump-to-contact. Here, using this novel technique, we investigate molecular nanomechanics in the formation and disruption processes of micelles formed on a hydrophobic surface. Furthermore, an experiment employing a hetero-nanostructure reveals that the nanomechanics depends on the form of the molecular assembly. Namely, the hemifusion and disruption processes are peculiar to the micellar surface and cause a higher energy dissipation than the monolayer surface. The technique established in this study will be used as a generic technology for further development of bottom-up nanotechnologies.

Metal-Polymer Heterojunction in Colloidal-Phase Plasmonic Catalysis

Plasmonic catalysis in the colloidal phase requires robust surface ligands that prevent particles from aggregation in adverse chemical environments and allow carrier flow from reagents to nanoparticles. This work describes the use of a water-soluble conjugated polymer comprising a thiophene moiety as a surface ligand for gold nanoparticles to create a hybrid system that, under the action of visible light, drives the conversion of the biorelevant NAD⁺ to its highly energetic reduced form NADH. A combination of advanced microscopy techniques and numerical simulations revealed that the robust metal-polymer heterojunction, rich in sulfonate functional groups, directs the interaction of electron-donor molecules with the plasmonic photocatalyst. The tight binding of polymer to the gold surface precludes the need for conventional transition-metal surface cocatalysts, which were previously shown to be essential for photocatalytic NAD⁺ reduction but are known to hinder the optical properties of plasmonic nanocrystals. Moreover, computational studies indicated that the coating polymer fosters a closer interaction between the sacrificial electron-donor triethanolamine and the nanoparticles, thus enhancing the reactivity.

Identification of plasmon-driven nanoparticle-coalescence-dominated growth of gold nanoplates through nanopore sensing

The fascinating phenomenon that plasmon excitation can convert isotropic silver nanospheres to anisotropic nanoprisms has already been developed into a general synthetic technique since the discovery in 2001. However, the mechanism governing the morphology conversion is described with different reaction processes. So far, the mechanism based on redox reactions dominated anisotropic growth by plasmon-produced hot carriers is widely accepted and developed. Here, we successfully achieved plasmon-driven high yield conversion of gold nanospheres into nanoplates with iodine as the inducer. To investigate the mechanism, nanopore sensing technology is established to statistically study the intermediate species at the single-nanoparticle level. Surprisingly, the morphology conversion is proved as a hot hole-controlled coalescence-dominated growth process. This work conclusively elucidates that a controllable plasmon-driven nanoparticle-coalescence mechanism could enable the production of well-defined anisotropic metal nanostructures and suggests that the nanopore sensing could be of general use for studying the growth process of nanomaterials.

Atomic structure of a seed-sized gold nanoprism

The growth of nanoparticles along one or two directions leads to anisotropic nanoparticles, but the nucleation (i.e., the formation of small seeds of specific shape) has long been elusive. Here, we show the total structure of a seed-sized Au₅₆ nanoprism, in which the side Au{100} facets are surrounded by bridging thiolates, whereas the top/bottom {111} facets are capped by phosphine ligands at the corners and Br⁻ at the center. The bromide has been proved to be the key to effectively stabilize the Au{111} to fulfill a complete face-centered-cubic core. In femtosecond electron dynamics analysis, the non-evolution of transient absorption spectra of Au₅₆ is similar to that of larger-sized gold nanoclusters (n > 100), which is ascribed to the completeness of the prismatic Au₅₆ core and an effective electron relaxation pathway created by the stronger Au-Au bonds inside. This work provides some insights for the understanding of plasmonic nanoprism formation.

The formation pathway of shape-anisotropic nanoparticles is difficult to characterize and not well understood. The authors synthesize a prismatic-shaped Au₅₆ nanocluster as possible seed of a prismatic nanoparticle and characterize the structure and ligand bonding motifs, providing insight into the formation and surface protection mechanisms.

Gold nanostructures: synthesis, properties, and neurological applications

Recent advances in technology are expected to increase our current understanding of neuroscience. Nanotechnology and nanomaterials can alter and control neural functionality in both in vitro and in vivo experimental setups. The intersection between neuroscience and nanoscience may generate long-term neural interfaces adapted at the molecular level. Owing to their intrinsic physicochemical characteristics, gold nanostructures (GNSs) have received much attention in neuroscience, especially for combined diagnostic and therapeutic (theragnostic) purposes. GNSs have been successfully employed to stimulate and monitor neurophysiological signals. Hence, GNSs could provide a promising solution for the regeneration and recovery of neural tissue, novel neuroprotective strategies, and integrated implantable materials. This review covers the broad range of neurological applications of GNS-based materials to improve clinical diagnosis and therapy. Sub-topics include neurotoxicity, targeted delivery of therapeutics to the central nervous system (CNS), neurochemical sensing, neuromodulation, neuroimaging, neurotherapy, tissue engineering, and neural regeneration. It focuses on core concepts of GNSs in neurology, to circumvent the limitations and significant obstacles of innovative approaches in neurobiology and neurochemistry, including theragnostics. We will discuss recent advances in the use of GNSs to overcome current bottlenecks and tackle technical and conceptual challenges.

Cell Sheet-Like Soft Nanoreactor Arrays

Tissues, which consist of groups of closely packed cell arrays, are essentially sheet-like biosynthesis plants. In tissues, individual cells are discrete microreactors working under highly viscous and confined environments. Herein, soft polystyrene-encased nanoframe (PEN) reactor arrays, as analogous nanoscale "sheet-like chemosynthesis plants", for the controlled synthesis of novel nanocrystals, are reported. Although the soft polystyrene (PS) is only 3 nm thick, it is elastic, robust, and permeable to aqueous solutes, while significantly slowing down their diffusion. PEN-associated palladium (Pd) crystallization follows a diffusion-controlled zero-order kinetics rather than a reaction-controlled first-order kinetics in bulk solution. Each individual PEN reactor has a volume in the zeptoliter range, which offers a unique confined environment, enabling a directional inward crystallization, in contrast to the conventional outward nucleation/growth that occurs in an unconfined bulk solution. This strategy makes it possible to generate a set of mono-, bi-, and trimetallic, and even semiconductor nanocrystals with tunable interior structures, which are difficult to achieve with normal systems based on bulk solutions.

Construction of highly dispersed Au active sites by ice photochemical polishing for efficient acetylene hydrochlorination

Compared to traditional Au/AC, ice-photochemical polishing results in atomically dispersed AuClx-like multi-sites, yielding a significantly improved performance of Au/AC-F1I1 catalysts.

Effect of Photocharging on Catalysis of Metallic Nanoparticles

The photocharging effect is widely known across different research fields, has rarely been quantified as a background contribution in photocatalysis, and has often been overlooked in mechanistic interpretation of nanoparticle photocatalysts. To address these issues, this work presents a two-step experiment: charging colloidal Pd nanoparticles with light and hole scavengers and using the charged particles to catalyze the reduction of 4-nitrophenol by NaBH₄ under non-irradiation conditions. Experimental kinetics demonstrated a proportional correlation between accumulated electrons and catalytic improvement of Pd nanoparticles. This work reminds us that photocharged nanoparticles may still catalyze chemical reactions as a background phenomenon even when they are not undergoing photoexcitation.
