Abstract
The deficiency of vitamins, a condition known as "hidden hunger", causes comprehensive pathological states. Research over the years has identified a relationship between liver diseases and hypovitaminosis or defects in vitamin metabolism. The exact mechanisms remain elusive; however, the crucial involvement of specific vitamins in metabolic functions, alongside the reclassification of liver disease as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), has prompted researchers to investigate the potential cause-effect dynamics between vitamin deficiency and liver disease. Moreover, scientists are increasingly investigating how the deficiency of vitamins might disrupt specific organ crosstalk, potentially contributing to liver disease. Although the concept of a dysmetabolic circuit linking adipose tissue and the liver, leading to liver disease, has been discussed, the possible involvement of vitamin deficiency in this axis is a relatively recent area of study, with numerous critical aspects yet to be fully understood. In this review, we examine research from 2019 to July 2024 focusing on the possible link between liver-adipose tissue crosstalk and vitamin deficiency involved in the onset and progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Studies report that vitamin deficiency can affect the liver-adipose tissue axis, mainly affecting the regulation of systemic energy balance and inflammation.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is closely associated with the body's energy metabolism. A potential strategy to regulate energy metabolism, combat obesity, and reduce NAFLD is by enhancing adipocyte thermogenesis and increasing energy expenditure. In this study, our objective was to examine the effects of phenolic extracts derived from Magnolia officinalis on the regulation of NAFLD. Specifically, we investigated the impact of Magnolol or Honokiol treatment on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese C57BL6/J male mice. Firstly, we monitored energy metabolism, dissected tissues, and analyzed tissue sections. Additionally, we conducted experiments on HepG2 and primary adipocytes to gain insights into the roles of Magnolol or Honokiol. To further understand the effects of these compounds on related signaling pathways and marker genes, we performed molecular docking, dual-luciferase assays, and interfered with target genes. Our findings revealed that Magnolol or Honokiol activate the peroxisome proliferator activated receptor alpha (PPARα) signaling pathway, leading to the alleviation of NAFLD. This activation promotes fatty acid oxidation, reduces lipogenesis, and enhances the expression and secretion of FGF21. Notably, Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), secreted by the liver, plays a crucial role in improving communication between the liver and adipocytes while also promoting the browning of adipose tissue. Additionally, Magnolol or Honokiol activate the peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) signaling pathway, resulting in increased uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) expression, heightened heat production in adipose tissue, and anti-obesity. Therefore, Magnolol or Honokiol alleviate NAFLD, promote adipose tissue browning and resist obesity through dual activation of PPARα/γ.

Abstract
Naringin, a natural flavanone primarily found in citrus fruits, has garnered increased attention due to its recognized antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective attributes. However, the functions of naringin in regulating energy expenditure are poorly understood. In the present study, we observed that twelve weeks of naringin supplementation substantially reshaped the metabolic profile of high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice, by inhibiting body weight gain, reducing liver weight, and altering body compositions. Notably, naringin exhibited a remarkable capacity to augment whole-body energy expenditure of the tested mice by enhancing the thermogenic activity of brown adipose tissue (BAT) and stimulating browning of inguinal white adipose tissue (iWAT). Furthermore, our results showed naringin supplementation modified gut microbiota composition, specifically increasing the abundance of Bifidobacterium and Lachnospiraceae_bacterium_28-4, while reducing the abundance of Lachnospiraceae_bacterium_DW59 and Dubosiella_newyorkensis. Subsequently, we also found naringin supplementation altered fecal metabolite profile, by significantly promoting the production of taurine, tyrosol, and thymol, which act as potent activators of thermoregulation. Interestingly, the metabolic effects of naringin were abolished upon gut microbiota depletion through antibiotic intervention, concurrently leading the disappearance of naringin-induced thermogenesis and protective actions on diet-induced obesity. This discovery revealed a novel food-driven cross-sectional communication between gut bacteria and adipose tissues. Collectively, our data indicate that naringin supplementation stimulates BAT thermogenesis, alters fat distribution, promotes the browning process, and consequently inhibits body weight gain; importantly these metabolic effects require the participation of gut bacteria.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease driven by periodontal pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), and its prevalence increases with age. However, little is known about the effect of immunosenescence on inflammatory response to P. gingivalis infection. In the present study, 16S rDNA sequencing analysis showed the relative abundance of P. gingivalis was significantly higher in periodontitis patients than healthy group, but there was no difference between the young (20 to 40 years old) and old (65 to 86 years old) periodontitis groups. Furthermore, the cytotoxic effect of P. gingivalis was greater on old THP-1 macrophages and on bone mar-row-derived cells (BMDMs) from old mice, and levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and IL-12 were higher in old than in young THP-1 macrophages. Furthermore, the activations of inflammasome components for IL-1β production by P. gingivalis infection were greater in old THP-1 macrophages. Finally, bone loss was significantly greater in P. gingivalis-infected aged mice than in young mice. These findings indicate that aging aggravates P. gingivalis-induced inflammatory cytokine secretion and inflammasome activation. The study enhances understanding of the relationship between periodontal immunosenescence and inflammatory response in the elderly.
