Interacting plexcitons for designed ultrafast optical nonlinearity in a monolayer semiconductor

Identifying high-order plasmon modes in silver nanoparticle-over-mirror configuration

Metallic nanoparticle-over-mirror (NPOM) represents as a versatile plasmonic configuration for surface enhanced spectroscopy, sensing and light-emitting metasurfaces. However, experimentally identifying the high-order localized surface plasmon modes in NPOM, especially for the best plasmonic material silver, is often hindered by the small scattering cross-section of high-order plasmon modes and the poor reproducibility of the spectra across different NPOMs, resulted from the polyhedral morphology of the colloidal nanoparticles or the rough surface of deposited polycrystalline metals. In this study, we identify the high-order localized surface plasmon modes in silver NPOM by using differential reflection spectroscopy. We achieved reproducible single-particle absorption spectra by constructing uniform NPOM consisting of silver nanospheres, single-crystallized silver microplates, and a self-assembled monolayer of 1,10-decanedithiol. For comparison, silver NPOM created from typical polycrystalline films exhibits significant spectral fluctuations, even when employing template stripping methods to minimize the film roughness. Identifying high-order plasmon modes in the NPOM configuration offers a pathway to construct high-quality plasmonic substrates for applications such as colloidal metasurface, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, fluorescence, or infrared absorption.

Recent progress of exciton transport in two-dimensional semiconductors

Spatial manipulation of excitonic quasiparticles, such as neutral excitons, charged excitons, and interlayer excitons, in two-dimensional semiconductors offers unique capabilities for a broad range of optoelectronic applications, encompassing photovoltaics, exciton-integrated circuits, and quantum light-emitting systems. Nonetheless, their practical implementation is significantly restricted by the absence of electrical controllability for neutral excitons, short lifetime of charged excitons, and low exciton funneling efficiency at room temperature, which remain a challenge in exciton transport. In this comprehensive review, we present the latest advancements in controlling exciton currents by harnessing the advanced techniques and the unique properties of various excitonic quasiparticles. We primarily focus on four distinct control parameters inducing the exciton current: electric fields, strain gradients, surface plasmon polaritons, and photonic cavities. For each approach, the underlying principles are introduced in conjunction with its progression through recent studies, gradually expanding their accessibility, efficiency, and functionality. Finally, we outline the prevailing challenges to fully harness the potential of excitonic quasiparticles and implement practical exciton-based optoelectronic devices.

Identification of Design Principles for the Preparation of Colloidal Plexcitonic Materials

Colloidal plexcitonic materials (CPMs) are a class of nanosystems where molecular dyes are strongly coupled with colloidal plasmonic nanoparticles, acting as nanocavities that enhance the light field. As a result of this strong coupling, new hybrid states are formed, called plexcitons, belonging to the broader family of polaritons. With respect to other families of polaritonic materials, CPMs are cheap and easy to prepare through wet chemistry methodologies. Still, clear structure-to-properties relationships are not available, and precise rules to drive the materials' design to obtain the desired optical properties are still missing. To fill this gap, in this article, we prepared a dataset with all CPMs reported in the literature, rationalizing their design by focusing on their three main relevant components (the plasmonic nanoparticles, the molecular dyes, and the capping layers) and identifying the most used and efficient combinations. With the help of statistical analysis, we also found valuable correlations between structure, coupling regime, and optical properties. The results of this analysis are expected to be relevant for the rational design of new CPMs with controllable and predictable photophysical properties to be exploited in a vast range of technological fields.

Charged biexciton polaritons sustaining strong nonlinearity in 2D semiconductor-based nanocavities

Controlling the interaction between light and matter at micro- and nano-scale can provide new opportunities for modern optics and optoelectronics. An archetypical example is polariton, a half-light-half-matter quasi particle inheriting simultaneously the robust coherence of light and the strong interaction of matter, which plays an important role in many exotic phenomena. Here, we open up a new kind of cooperative coupling between plasmon and different excitonic complexes in WS2-silver nanocavities, namely plasmon-exciton-trion-charged biexciton four coupling states. Thanks to the large Bohr radius of up to 5 nm, the charged biexciton polariton exhibits strong saturation nonlinearity, ~30 times higher than the neutral exciton polariton. Transient absorption dynamics further reveal the ultrafast many-body interaction nature, with a timescale of <100 fs. The demonstration of biexciton polariton here combines high nonlinearity, simple processing and strong scalability, permitting access for future energy-efficient optical switching and information processing.

Plexcitonics: plasmon-exciton coupling for enhancing spectroscopy, optical chirality, and nonlinearity

Plexcitonics is a rapidly developing interdisciplinary field that holds immense potential for the creation of innovative optical technologies and devices. This field focuses on investigating the interactions between plasmons and excitons in hybrid systems. In this review, we provide an overview of the fundamental principles of plasmonics and plexcitonics and discuss the latest advancements in plexcitonics. Specifically, we highlight the ability to manipulate plasmon-exciton interactions, the emerging field of tip-enhanced spectroscopy, and advancements in optical chirality and nonlinearity. These recent developments have spurred further research in the field of plexcitonics and offer inspiration for the design of advanced materials and devices with enhanced optical properties and functionalities.

Exciton polariton interactions in Van der Waals superlattices at room temperature

Monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials have attracted a great attention because of their unique properties and promising applications in integrated optoelectronic devices. Being layered materials, they can be stacked vertically to fabricate artificial van der Waals lattices, which offer unique opportunities to tailor the electronic and optical properties. The integration of TMD heterostructures in planar microcavities working in strong coupling regime is particularly important to control the light-matter interactions and form robust polaritons, highly sought for room temperature applications. Here, we demonstrate the systematic control of the coupling-strength by embedding multiple WS₂ monolayers in a planar microcavity. The vacuum Rabi splitting is enhanced from 36 meV for one monolayer up to 72 meV for the four-monolayer microcavity. In addition, carrying out time-resolved pump-probe experiments at room temperature we demonstrate the nature of polariton interactions which are dominated by phase space filling effects. Furthermore, we also observe the presence of long-living dark excitations in the multiple monolayer superlattices. Our results pave the way for the realization of polaritonic devices based on planar microcavities embedding multiple monolayers and could potentially lead the way for future devices towards the exploitation of interaction-driven phenomena at room temperature.

Coherent optical neuron control based on reinforcement learning

Optical neural networks take optical neurons as the cornerstone to achieve complex functions. The coherent optical neuron has become one of the mainstream implementations because it can effectively perform natural and even complex number calculations. However, its state variability and requirement for reliability and effectiveness render traditional control methods no longer applicable. In this Letter, deep reinforcement coherent optical neuron control (DRCON) is proposed, and its effectiveness is experimentally demonstrated. Compared with the standard stochastic gradient descent, the average convergence rate of DRCON is 33% faster, while the effective number of bits increases from less than 2 bits to 5.5 bits. DRCON is a promising first step for large-scale optical neural network control.

Ultra-confined Propagating Exciton-Plasmon Polaritons Enabled by Cavity-Free Strong Coupling: Beating Plasmonic Trade-Offs

Hybrid coupling systems consisting of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) and plasmonic nanostructures have emerged as a promising platform to explore exciton-plasmon polaritons. However, the requisite cavity/resonator for strong coupling introduces extra complexities and challenges for waveguiding applications. Alternatively, plasmonic nano-waveguides can also be utilized to provide a non-resonant approach for strong coupling, while their utility is limited by the plasmonic confinement-loss and confinement-momentum trade-offs. Here, based on a cavity-free approach, we overcome these constraints by theoretically strong coupling of a monolayer TMD to a single metal nanowire, generating ultra-confined propagating exciton-plasmon polaritons (PEPPs) that beat the plasmonic trade-offs. By leveraging strong-coupling-induced reformations in energy distribution and combining favorable properties of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and excitons, the generated PEPPs feature ultra-deep subwavelength confinement (down to 1-nm level with mode areas ~ 10^-4 of λ²), long propagation length (up to ~ 60 µm), tunable dispersion with versatile mode characters (SPP- and exciton-like mode characters), and small momentum mismatch to free-space photons. With the capability to overcome the trade-offs of SPPs and the compatibility for waveguiding applications, our theoretical results suggest an attractive guided-wave platform to manipulate exciton-plasmon interactions at the ultra-deep subwavelength scale, opening new horizons for waveguiding nano-polaritonic components and devices.

Optical Introduction and Manipulation of Plasmon-Exciton-Trion Coupling in a Si/WS2/Au Nanocavity

Strong plasmon-exciton coupling, which has potential applications in nanophotonics, plasmonics, and quantum electrodynamics, has been successfully demonstrated by using metallic nanocavities and two-dimensional materials. Dynamical control of plasmon-exciton coupling strength, especially by using optical methods, remains a big challenge although it is highly desirable. Here, we report the optical introduction and manipulation of plasmon-exciton-trion coupling realized in a dielectric-metal hybrid nanocavity, which is composed of a silicon (Si) nanoparticle and a thin gold (Au) film, with an embedded tungsten disulfide (WS₂) monolayer. We employ scattering and photoluminescence spectra to characterize the coupling strength between plasmons and excitons in Si/WS₂/Au nanocavities constructed by using Si nanoparticles with different diameters. We enhance the plasmon-exciton and plasmon-trion coupling strength by injecting excitons and trions into the WS₂ monolayer with a 488 nm laser beam. It is revealed that the emission intensities of excitons and trions with respect to the reference WS₂ monolayer can be modified through the change in the coupling strength induced by the laser light. Interestingly, the coupling strength between the plasmons and the excitons/trions can be manipulated from weak to strong coupling regime by simply increasing the laser power, which is clearly resolved in the scattering spectra of Si/WS₂/Au nanocavities. More importantly, the plasmon-exciton-trion coupling induced by the laser light is confirmed by the energy exchange between excitons and trions. Our findings indicate the possibility for optically manipulating plasmon-exciton interaction and suggest the practical applications of dielectric-metal hybrid nanocavities in nanoscale plasmonic devices.

Data-Enhanced Deep Greedy Optimization Algorithm for the On-Demand Inverse Design of TMDC-Cavity Heterojunctions

A data-enhanced deep greedy optimization (DEDGO) algorithm is proposed to achieve the efficient and on-demand inverse design of multiple transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC)-photonic cavity-integrated heterojunctions operating in the strong coupling regime. Precisely, five types of photonic cavities with different geometrical parameters are employed to alter the optical properties of monolayer TMDC, aiming at discovering new and intriguing physics associated with the strong coupling effect. Notably, the traditional rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) approach is utilized to generate a relatively small training dataset for the DEDGO algorithm. Importantly, one remarkable feature of DEDGO is the integration the decision theory of reinforcement learning, which remedies the deficiencies of previous research that focused more on modeling over decision making, increasing the success rate of inverse prediction. Specifically, an iterative optimization strategy, namely, deep greedy optimization, is implemented to improve the performance. In addition, a data enhancement method is also employed in DEDGO to address the dependence on a large amount of training data. The accuracy and effectiveness of the DEDGO algorithm are confirmed to be much higher than those of the random forest algorithm and deep neural network, making possible the replacement of the time-consuming conventional scanning optimization method with the DEDGO algorithm. This research thoroughly describes the universality, interpretability, and excellent performance of the DEDGO algorithm in exploring the underlying physics of TMDC-cavity heterojunctions, laying the foundations for the on-demand inverse design of low-dimensional material-based nano-devices.

Ultrafast Dynamics of Multiple Plexcitons in Colloidal Nanomaterials: The Mediating Action of Plasmon Resonances and Dark States

Plexcitons, that is, mixed plasmon-exciton states, are currently gaining broad interest to control the flux of energy at the nanoscale. Several promising properties of plexcitonic materials have already been revealed, but the debate about their ultrafast dynamic properties is still vibrant. Here, pump-probe spectroscopy is used to characterize the ultrafast dynamics of colloidal nanohybrids prepared by coupling gold nanoparticles and porphyrin dyes, where one or two sets of plexcitonic resonances can be selectively activated. We found that these dynamics are strongly affected by the presence of a reservoir of states including plasmon resonances and dark states. The time constants regulating the plexciton relaxations are significantly longer than the typical values found in the literature and can be modulated over more than 1 order of magnitude, opening possible interesting perspectives to modify rates of chemically relevant molecular processes.

Optical nonlinearity goes ultrafast in 2D semiconductor-based nanocavities

Hybrid systems of silver nanodisks strongly coupled to monolayer tungsten-disulfide (WS₂) show giant room-temperature nonlinearity due to their deeply sub-wavelength localized nature, resulting in ultrafast modifications of nonlinear absorption in a solid-state system.
