2D Graphene Oxide Films Expand Functionality of Photonic Chips

On-chip integration of 2D materials with unique structures and properties endow integrated devices with new functionalities and improved performance. With high flexibility in ways to modify its properties and compatibility with integrated platforms, graphene oxide (GO) is an exceptionally attractive 2D material for hybrid integrated photonic chips. Here, by harnessing unique property changes induced by photothermal effects in 2D GO films, novel functionalities beyond the capability of photonic integrated circuits are demonstrated. These include all-optical control and tuning, optical power limiting, and nonreciprocal light transmission. The 2D layered GO films are integrated onto photonic chips with precise control of their thickness and size. Benefitting from the broadband optical response of 2D GO films, all three functionalities feature a very wide operational optical bandwidth. By fitting the experimental results with theory, the changes in GO film properties induced by the photothermal effects are analyzed, revealing interesting insights about the physics of 2D GO films. These results highlight the versatility of 2D GO films in implementing new functions for integrated photonic devices for a wide range of applications.

Swelling of Thin Graphene Oxide Film in Water Vapor Studied by In Situ Spectroscopic Ellipsometry

Graphene oxide (GO) is obtained by the chemical treatment of graphene sheets, resulting in decoration with oxygen-containing functional groups. In the work presented here, we examined marked changes that occur in a thin film of parallel aligned GO sheets when exposed to water vapor at various pressures. It was found that exceptionally fast and substantial water uptake and release occur that is accompanied by major changes in GO interlayer spacing. These characteristics were obtained in situ with spectroscopic ellipsometry. At 99% relative humidity (RH) and 25 °C, the interlayer spacing became 1.41 nm, which recovers to ∼0.8 nm within 30 s when exposed to 10% RH. Besides layer thickness values, uniaxial optical constants for the GO vs RH were derived from the ellipsometry data. Molar refraction theory was applied that indicated monolayer water formation at ∼91% RH at 25 °C upon water adsorption. Our findings contribute to the understanding of the interaction between GO and its environment. The very outspoken effect of external water vapor pressure on GO water content, interlayer spacing, and optical properties can be utilized in sensing and separation devices, subnanometer positioning, chemical switches, and environmentally aware materials.

Solar-Driven Biomass Reforming for Hydrogen Generation: Principles, Advances, and Challenges

Hydrogen (H2) has emerged as a clean and versatile energy carrier to power a carbon-neutral economy for the post-fossil era. Hydrogen generation from low-cost and renewable biomass by virtually inexhaustible solar energy presents an innovative strategy to process organic solid waste, combat the energy crisis, and achieve carbon neutrality. Herein, the progress and breakthroughs in solar-powered H2 production from biomass are reviewed. The basic principles of solar-driven H2 generation from biomass are first introduced for a better understanding of the reaction mechanism. Next, the merits and shortcomings of various semiconductors and cocatalysts are summarized, and the strategies for addressing the related issues are also elaborated. Then, various bio-based feedstocks for solar-driven H2 production are reviewed with an emphasis on the effect of photocatalysts and catalytic systems on performance. Of note, the concurrent generation of value-added chemicals from biomass reforming is emphasized as well. Meanwhile, the emerging photo-thermal coupling strategy that shows a grand prospect for maximally utilizing the entire solar energy spectrum is also discussed. Further, the direct utilization of hydrogen from biomass as a green reductant for producing value-added chemicals via organic reactions is also highlighted. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of photoreforming biomass toward hydrogen are envisioned.

Floatable Cu2(OH)PO4/rGO Aerogel for Full Spectrum Driven Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants

Photocatalytic technology is an attractive option for environmental remediation because of its green and sustainable nature. However, the inefficient utilization of solar energy and powder morphology currently impede its practical application. Here, we designed a floatable photocatalyst by anchoring 0D Cu2(OH)PO4 (CHP) nanoparticles on 2D graphene to construct 0D/2D CHP/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) aerogels. The CHP/rGO aerogels have interconnected mesopores that provide a large surface area, promoting particle dispersion and increasing the number of active sites. Moreover, the optical response of the CHP/rGO aerogel has been significantly expanded to cover the full spectrum of the solar light. Notably, the 20%CHP/rGO aerogel displayed a high degradation rate (k = 0.178 min-1) taking methylene blue (MB) as a model pollutant under light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). The enhanced photocatalytic activity is ascribed to the rapid electron transfer in the CHP/rGO heterostructures, as supported by the DFT theoretical calculations. Our research highlights the utilization of full spectrum responsive photocatalysts for the elimination of organic pollutants from wastewater under solar light irradiation, as well as the potential for catalyst recovery using floatable aerogels to meet industrial requirements.

Novel electrochemical ZnO/MnO2/rGO nanocomposite-based catalyst for simultaneous determination of hydroquinone and pyrocatechol

An innovative electrochemical sensing method is introduced for dihydroxy benzene (DHB) isomers, specifically hydroquinone (HQ) and pyrocatechol (PCC), employing a zinc-oxide/manganese-oxide/reduced-graphene-oxide (ZnO/MnO2/rGO) nanocomposite (NC) as an electrode modifier material. Comprehensive characterization confirmed well-dispersed ZnO/MnO2 nanoparticles on rGO sheets. Electrochemical analysis revealed the ZnO/MnO2/rGO-NC-based modified electrode possesses low electrical resistance (126.2 Ω), high electrocatalytic activity, and rapid electron transport, attributed to the synergies between ZnO, MnO2 and rGO. The modified electrode demonstrated exceptional electrochemical performance in terms of selectivity for the simultaneous detection of HQ and PCC. Differential pulse voltammetry studies validated the proposed sensor's ability to detect HQ and PCC within linear response ranges of 0.01-115 μM and 0.03-60.53 μM, with detection limits of 0.0055 µM and 0.0053 µM, respectively. Practical validation using diverse water samples showcased excellent percent recovery of HQ and PCC using the ZnO/MnO2/rGO-based electrochemical sensor, underscoring the sensor's potential for real-world applications in environmental monitoring.

Two-Dimensional Materials for Highly Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) offer low costs and high power conversion efficiency. However, the lack of long-term stability, primarily stemming from the interfacial defects and the susceptible metal electrodes, hinders their practical application. In the past few years, two-dimensional (2D) materials (e.g., graphene and its derivatives, transitional metal dichalcogenides, MXenes, and black phosphorus) have been identified as a promising solution to solving these problems because of their dangling bond-free surfaces, layer-dependent electronic band structures, tunable functional groups, and inherent compactness. Here, recent progress of 2D material toward efficient and stable PSCs is summarized, including its role as both interface materials and electrodes. We discuss their beneficial effects on perovskite growth, energy level alignment, defect passivation, as well as blocking external stimulus. In particular, the unique properties of 2D materials to form van der Waals heterojunction at the bottom interface are emphasized. Finally, perspectives on the further development of PSCs using 2D materials are provided, such as designing high-quality van der Waals heterojunction, enhancing the uniformity and coverage of 2D nanosheets, and developing new 2D materials-based electrodes.

A Stretchable and Tough Graphene Film Enabled by Mechanical Bond

The pursuit of fabricating high-performance graphene films has aroused considerable attention due to their potential for practical applications. However, developing both stretchable and tough graphene films remains a formidable challenge. To address this issue, we herein introduce mechanical bond to comprehensively improve the mechanical properties of graphene films, utilizing [2]rotaxane as the bridging unit. Under external force, the [2]rotaxane cross-link undergoes intramolecular motion, releasing hidden chain and increasing the interlayer slip distance between graphene nanosheets. Compared with graphene films without [2]rotaxane cross-linking, the presence of mechanical bond not only boosted the strength of graphene films (247.3 vs 74.8 MPa) but also markedly promoted the tensile strain (23.6 vs 10.2 %) and toughness (23.9 vs 4.0 MJ/m3). Notably, the achieved tensile strain sets a record high and the toughness surpasses most reported results, rendering the graphene films suitable for applications as flexible electrodes. Even when the films were stretched within a 20 % strain and repeatedly bent vertically, the light-emitting diodes maintained an on-state with little changes in brightness. Additionally, the film electrodes effectively actuated mechanical joints, enabling uninterrupted grasping movements. Therefore, the study holds promise for expanding the application of graphene films and simultaneously inspiring the development of other high-performance two-dimensional films.

Exfoliation of Metal-Organic Frameworks to Give 2D MOF Nanosheets for the Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The structure and properties of materials are determined by a diverse range of chemical bond formation and breaking mechanisms, which greatly motivates the development of selectively controlling the chemical bonds in order to achieve materials with specific characteristics. Here, an orientational intervening bond-breaking strategy is demonstrated for synthesizing ultrathin metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets through balancing the process of thermal decomposition and liquid nitrogen exfoliation. In such approach, proper thermal treatment can weaken the interlayer bond while maintaining the stability of the intralayer bond in the layered MOFs. And the following liquid nitrogen treatment results in significant deformation and stress in the layered MOFs' structure due to the instant temperature drop and drastic expansion of liquid N2, leading to the curling, detachment, and separation of the MOF layers. The produced MOF nanosheets with five cycles of treatment are primarily composed of nanosheets that are less than 10 nm in thickness. The MOF nanosheets exhibit enhanced catalytic performance in oxygen evolution reactions owing to the ultrathin thickness without capping agents which provide improved charge transfer efficiency and dense exposed active sites. This strategy underscores the significance of orientational intervention in chemical bonds to engineer innovative materials.

Role of tea polyphenols in enhancing the performance, sustainability, and catalytic cleaning capability of membrane separation for water-soluble pollutant removal

Tea polyphenols (TPs), like green tea polyphenol (GTP) and black tea polyphenol (BTP), with phenolic hydroxyl structures, form coordination and hydrogen bonds, making them effective for bridging inorganic catalysts and membranes. Here, TPs were employed as interface agents for the preparation of TPs-modified needle-clustered NiCo-layered double hydroxide/graphene oxide membranes (NiCo-LDH-TPs/GO). The incorporation of porous guest material, NiCo-LDH-TPs, facilitated water channel expansion, enhancing membrane permeability and resulting in the development of high-performance, sustainable catalytic cleaning membranes. The introduction of TPs through coordination weakened the surface electronegativity of NiCo-LDH, promoting a uniform mixed dispersion with GO and facilitating membrane self-assembly. NiCo-LDH-GTP/GO-5 and NiCo-LDH-BTP/GO-5 membranes demonstrated permeances of 85.98 and 90.76 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, respectively, with rejections of 98.73% and 99.54% for methylene blue (MB). Notably, the NiCo-LDH-BTP/GO-5 membrane maintained a high rejection of 97.11% even after 18 cycles in the catalytic cleaning process. Furthermore, the modification of GTP and BTP enhanced MB degradation through PMS activation, resulting in a 0.33% and 0.35% increase in the reaction rate constants of NiCo-LDH, respectively, while reducing metal ion spillover. These findings highlighted the potential of TPs in enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of catalytic cleaning GO membranes for water purification and separation processes.

Reduced and modified graphene oxide with Ag/V2O5 as a ternary composite visible light photocatalyst against dyes and pesticides

Water pollution by dyes and pesticides poses significant threats to our ecosystem. In this research, a visible-light ternary composite photocatalytic system was fabricated using graphene oxide (GO) by reducing with N2H4, modifying with KOH, and decorating with Ag/V2O5. The fabricated photocatalysts were characterized through FTIR, SEM, XRD, BET, PL, EDX, ESR, UV-vis spectroscopy, TGA, ESI-MS, and Raman spectroscopy. The point zero charge of the reduced and modified GO (RMGO/Ag/V2O5) was measured to be 6.7 by the pH drift method. This ternary composite was able to achieve complete removal of methyl orange (MO) and chlorpyrifos (CP) in solutions in 80 min under the optimum operation conditions (e.g., in terms of pollutant/catalyst concentrations, pH effects, and contact time). The role of active species responsible for photocatalytic activity was confirmed by scavenger analysis and ESR investigations. The potential mechanism for photocatalytic activity was studied through a fragmentation process carried out by MS analysis. Through nonlinear fitting of the experimental data, MO and CP exhibited the best fit results with the pseudo 1st-order kinetics (quantum yields of 1.07 × 10-3 and 2.16 × 10-3 molecules photon-1 and space-time yields of 1.53 × 10-5 and 2.7 × 10-5 molecules photon-1 mg-1, respectively). The structure of the nanomaterials remained mostly intact to support increased stability and reusability of the prepared photocatalysts even after 10 successive regeneration cycles.

Nitrogen-Anchored Boridene Enables Mg-CO2 Batteries with High Reversibility

Nanoscale defect engineering plays a crucial role in incorporating extraordinary catalytic properties in two-dimensional materials by varying the surface groups or site interactions. Herein, we synthesized high-loaded nitrogen-doped Boridene (N-Boridene (Mo4/3(BnN1-n)2-mTz), N-doped concentration up to 26.78 at %) nanosheets by chemical exfoliation followed by cyanamide intercalation. Three different nitrogen sites are observed in N-Boridene, wherein the site of boron vacancy substitution mainly accounts for its high chemical activity. Attractively, as a cathode for Mg-CO2 batteries, it delivers a long-term lifetime (305 cycles), high-energy efficiency (93.6%), and ultralow overpotential (∼0.09 V) at a high current of 200 mA g-1, which overwhelms all Mg-CO2 batteries reported so far. Experimental and computational studies suggest that N-Boridene can remarkably change the adsorption energy of the reaction products and lower the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (*MgCO2 → *MgCO3·xH2O), resulting in the rapid reversible formation/decomposition of new MgCO3·5H2O products. The surging Boridene materials with defects provide substantial opportunities to develop other heterogeneous catalysts for efficient capture and converting of CO2.

3D Printed Conductive Hydrogel Patch Incorporated with MSC@GO for Efficient Myocardial Infarction Repair

Myocardial infarction (MI) results in an impaired heart function. Conductive hydrogel patch-based therapy has been considered as a promising strategy for cardiac repair after MI. In our study, we fabricated a three-dimensional (3D) printed conductive hydrogel patch made of fibrinogen scaffolds and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) combined with graphene oxide (GO) flakes (MSC@GO), capitalizing on GO's excellent mechanical property and electrical conductivity. The MSC@GO hydrogel patch can be attached to the epicardium via adhesion to provide strong electrical integration with infarcted hearts, as well as mechanical and regeneration support for the infarcted area, thereby up-regulating the expression of connexin 43 (Cx43) and resulting in effective MI repair in vivo. In addition, MI also triggers apoptosis and damage of cardiomyocytes (CMs), hindering the normal repair of the infarcted heart. GO flakes exhibit a protective effect against the apoptosis of implanted MSCs. In the mouse model of MI, MSC@GO hydrogel patch implantation supported cardiac repair by reducing cell apoptosis, promoting gap connexin protein Cx43 expression, and then boosting cardiac function. Together, this study demonstrated that the conductive hydrogel patch has versatile conductivity and mechanical support function and could therefore be a promising candidate for heart repair.

Technology and Integration Roadmap for Optoelectronic Memristor

Optoelectronic memristors (OMs) have emerged as a promising optoelectronic Neuromorphic computing paradigm, opening up new opportunities for neurosynaptic devices and optoelectronic systems. These OMs possess a range of desirable features including minimal crosstalk, high bandwidth, low power consumption, zero latency, and the ability to replicate crucial neurological functions such as vision and optical memory. By incorporating large-scale parallel synaptic structures, OMs are anticipated to greatly enhance high-performance and low-power in-memory computing, effectively overcoming the limitations of the von Neumann bottleneck. However, progress in this field necessitates a comprehensive understanding of suitable structures and techniques for integrating low-dimensional materials into optoelectronic integrated circuit platforms. This review aims to offer a comprehensive overview of the fundamental performance, mechanisms, design of structures, applications, and integration roadmap of optoelectronic synaptic memristors. By establishing connections between materials, multilayer optoelectronic memristor units, and monolithic optoelectronic integrated circuits, this review seeks to provide insights into emerging technologies and future prospects that are expected to drive innovation and widespread adoption in the near future.

Leaping Supercapacitor Performance via a Flash-Enabled Graphene Photothermal Coating

Elevating the working temperature delivers a simple and universal approach to enhance the energy storage performances of supercapacitors owing to the fundamental improvements in ion transportation kinetics. Among all heating methods, introducing green and sustainable photothermal heating on supercapacitors (SCs) is highly desired yet remains an open challenge, especially for developing an efficient and universal photothermal heating strategy that can be generally applied to arbitrary SC devices. Flash-enabled graphene (FG) absorbers are produced through a simple and facile flash reduction process, which can be coated on the surface of any SC devices to lift their working temperature via a photothermal effect, thus, improving their overall performance, including both power and energy densities. With the systematic temperature-dependent investigation and the in-depth numerical simulation of SC performances, an evident enhancement in capacitance up to 65% can be achieved in photothermally enhanced SC coin cell devices with FG photo-absorbers. This simple, practical, and universal enhancement strategy provides a novel insight into boosting SC performances without bringing complexity in electrode fabrication/optimization. Also, it sheds light on the highly efficient utilization of green and renewable photothermal energies for broad application scenarios, especially for energy storage devices.

The Physical Mechanism of Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Nanographene-Induced Chiral Inversion

Based on density functional theory (DFT) and wave function analysis, the ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis) spectra and Raman spectra of 1-meso and 1-rac obtained by the chiral separation of chiral nanographenes are theoretically investigated. The electron excitation properties of 1-meso and 1-rac are studied by means of transition density matrix (TDM) and charge density difference (CDD) diagrams. The intermolecular interaction is discussed based on an independent gradient model based on Hirshfeld partition (IGMH). The interaction of 1-meso and 1-rac with the external environment is studied using the electrostatic potential (ESP), and the electron delocalization degree of 1-meso and 1-rac is studied based on the magnetically induced current under the external magnetic field. Through the chiral separation of 1-rac, two enantiomers, 1-(P, P) and 1-(M, M), were obtained. The electrical-magnetic interaction of the molecule is revealed by analyzing the electron circular dichroism (ECD) spectra of 1-meso, 1-(P, P) and 1-(M, M), the transition electric dipole moment (TEDM) and the transition magnetic dipole moment (TMDM). It is found that 1-(P, P) and 1-(M, M) have opposite chiral properties due to the inversion of the structure.

Laser-Guided, Self-Confined Graphitization for High-Conductivity Embedded Electronics

Facile fabrication of highly conductive and self-encapsulated graphene electronics is in urgent demand for carbon-based integrated circuits, field effect transistors, optoelectronic devices, and flexible sensors. The current fabrication of these electronic devices is mainly based on layer-by-layer techniques (separate circuit preparation and encapsulation procedures), which show multistep fabrication procedures, complicated renovation/repair procedures, and poor electrical property due to graphene oxidation and exfoliation. Here, we propose a laser-guided interfacial writing (LaserIW) technique based on self-confined, nickel-catalyzed graphitization to directly fabricate highly conductive, embedded graphene electronics inside multilayer structures. The doped nickel is used to induce chain carbonization, which firstly enhances the photothermal effect to increase the confined temperature for initial carbonization, and the generated carbon further increases the light-absorption capacity to fabricate high-quality graphene. Meanwhile, the nickel atoms contribute to the accelerated connection of carbon atoms. This interfacial carbonization inherently avoids the exfoliation and oxidation of the as-formed graphene, resulting in an 8-fold improvement in electrical conductivity (~20,000 S/m at 7,958 W/cm2 and 2 mm/s for 20% nickel content). The LaserIW technique shows excellent stability and reproducibility, with ±2.5% variations in the same batch and ±2% variations in different batches. Component-level wireless light sensors and flexible strain sensors exhibit excellent sensitivity (665 kHz/(W/cm2) for passive wireless light sensors) and self-encapsulation (<1% variations in terms of waterproof, antifriction, and antithermal shock). Additionally, the LaserIW technique allows for one-step renovation of in-service electronics and nondestructive repair of damaged circuits without the need to disassemble encapsulation layers. This technique reverses the layer-by-layer processing mode and provides a powerful manufacturing tool for the fabrication, modification, and repair of multilayer, multifunctional embedded electronics, especially demonstrating the immense potential for in-space manufacturing.

MatGPT: A Vane of Materials Informatics from Past, Present, to Future

Combining materials science, artificial intelligence (AI), physical chemistry, and other disciplines, materials informatics is continuously accelerating the vigorous development of new materials. The emergence of "GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) AI" shows that the scientific research field has entered the era of intelligent civilization with "data" as the basic factor and "algorithm + computing power" as the core productivity. The continuous innovation of AI will impact the cognitive laws and scientific methods, and reconstruct the knowledge and wisdom system. This leads to think more about materials informatics. Here, a comprehensive discussion of AI models and materials infrastructures is provided, and the advances in the discovery and design of new materials are reviewed. With the rise of new research paradigms triggered by "AI for Science", the vane of materials informatics: "MatGPT", is proposed and the technical path planning from the aspects of data, descriptors, generative models, pretraining models, directed design models, collaborative training, experimental robots, as well as the efforts and preparations needed to develop a new generation of materials informatics, is carried out. Finally, the challenges and constraints faced by materials informatics are discussed, in order to achieve a more digital, intelligent, and automated construction of materials informatics with the joint efforts of more interdisciplinary scientists.

Enhancing Solar-Driven Water Purification by Multiscale Biomimetic Evaporators Featuring Lamellar MoS2/GO Heterojunctions

Solar-powered steam generation holds a strong sustainability in facing the global water crisis, while the production efficiency and antifouling performance remain challenges. Inspired by river moss, a multiscale biomimetic evaporator is designed, where the key photothermal conversion film composed of lamellar MoS2/graphene oxides (GO) can significantly enhance the evaporation efficiency and solve the problem of fouling. First-level leaf-like MoS2/GO nanosheets, obtained by a modified hydrothermal synthesis with an assisted magnetic-field rotation stirring, are self-assembled into a second-level nanoporous film, which achieves an evaporation rate (ER) of 1.69 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun illumination and an excellent self-cleaning ability. The tertiary-bionic evaporator with a macroscopic crownlike shape further enhances the ER to 3.20 kg m-2 h-1, 189% above that of planar film, yielding 20.25 kg m2 of freshwater from seawater during a daytime exposure of 6 h. The exceptional outcomes originate from the macroscopic biomimetic design and the microscopic integration of heterojunction interfaces between the MoS2 and GO interlayers and the nanoporous surface. The biomimetic evaporator indicates a potential direction through surface/interface regulation of photothermal nanomaterials for water desalination.

Modifying the electronic and magnetic properties of the scandium nitride semiconductor monolayer via vacancies and doping

In this work, the effects of vacancies and doping on the electronic and magnetic properties of the stable scandium nitride (ScN) monolayer are investigated using first-principles calculations. The pristine monolayer is a two-dimensional (2D) indirect-gap semiconductor material with an energy gap of 1.59(2.84) eV as calculated using the GGA-PBE (HSE06) functional. The projected density of states, charge distribution, and electron localization function assert its ionic character generated by the charge transfer from the Sc atoms to the N atoms. The monolayer is magnetized by a single Sc vacancy with a total magnetic moment of 3.00μB, while a single N vacancy causes a weaker magnetization with a total magnetic moment of 0.52μB. In both cases, the magnetism originates mainly from the atoms closest to the defect site. Significant magnetization is also reached by doping with acceptor impurities. Specifically, a total magnetic moment of 2.00μB is obtained by doping with alkali metals (Li and Na) in the Sc sublattice and with B in the N sublattice. Doping with alkaline earth metals (Be and Mg) in the Sc sublattice and with C in the N sublattice induces a value of 1.00μB. In these cases, either magnetic semiconducting or half-metallicity characteristics arise in the ScN monolayer, making it a prospective 2D spintronic material. In contrast, no magnetism is induced by doping with donor impurities (O and F atoms) in the N sublattice. An O impurity metallizes the monolayer; meanwhile, F doping leads to a large band-gap reduction of the order of 82%, widening the working regime of the monolayer in optoelectronic devices. The results presented herein may introduce efficient methods to functionalize the ScN monolayer for optoelectronic and spintronic applications.

Stepwise reduction of graphene oxide and studies on defect-controlled physical properties

Graphene oxide (GO) is a monolayer of oxidized graphene which is a convenient and potential candidate in a wide range of fields of applications like electronics, photonics, optoelectronics, energy storage, catalysis, chemical sensors, and many others. GO is often composed of various oxygen-containing groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, and epoxy. One appealing method for achieving graphene-like behavior with sp2 hybridized carbon is the reduction of GO i.e. formation of reduced graphene oxide (RGO). A stepwise reduction GO to form a family of RGO, containing various quantities of oxygen-related defects was carried out. Herein, the defects related chemical and physical properties of GO and the RGO family were studied and reported in an effort to understand how the properties of RGO vary with the reduction rate. Although there are several reports on various features and applications of GO and RGO but a systematic investigation of the variation of the physical and chemical properties in RGO with the varying quantities of oxygeneous defects is imperative for the engineered physical properties in achieving the desired field of applications. We have attempted to look at the role of sp2 and sp3 carbon fractions, which are present in RGO-based systems, and how they affect the electrical, optoelectronic, and adsorption characteristics.

Preparation of Electrodes with β-Nickel Hydroxide/CVD-Graphene/3D-Nickel Foam Composite Structures to Enhance the Capacitance Characteristics of Supercapacitors

Supercapacitors have the characteristics of high power density, long cycle life, and fast charge and discharge rates, making them promising alternatives to traditional capacitors and batteries. The use of transition-metal compounds as electrode materials for supercapacitors has been a compelling research topic in recent years because their use can effectively enhance the electrical performance of supercapacitors. The current research on capacitor electrode materials can mainly be divided into the following three categories: carbon-based materials, metal oxides, and conductive polymers. Nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2) is a potential electrode material for use in supercapacitors. Depending on the preparation conditions, two crystal phases of nickel hydroxide, α and β, can be produced. When compared to α-NiOH, the structure of β-Ni(OH)2 does not experience ion intercalation. As a result, the carrier transmission rate of α-Ni(OH)2 is slower, and its specific capacitance value is smaller. Its carrier transport rate can be improved by adding conductive materials, such as graphene. β-Ni(OH)2 was chosen as an electrode material for a supercapacitor in this study. Homemade low-pressure chemical vapor deposition graphene (LPCVD-Graphene) conductive material was introduced to modify β-Ni(OH)2 in order to increase its carrier transport rate. The LPCVD method was used to grow high-quality graphene films on three-dimensional (3D) nickel foam substrates. Then, a hydrothermal synthesis method was used to grow β-Ni(OH)2 nanostructures on the 3D graphene/nickel foam substrate. In order to improve the electrical properties of the composite structure, a high-quality graphene layer was incorporated between the nickel hydroxide and the 3D nickel foam substrate. The effect of the conductive graphene layer on the growth of β-Ni(OH)2, as well as its electrical properties and electrochemical performance, was studied. When this β-Ni(OH)2/CVD-Graphene/3D-NF (nickel foam) material was used as the working electrodes of the supercapacitor under a current density of 1 A/g and 3 A/g, they exhibited a specific capacitance of 2015 F/g and 1218.9 F/g, respectively. This capacitance value is 2.62 times higher than that of the structure without modification with a graphene layer. The capacitance value remains at 99.2% even after 1000 consecutive charge and discharge cycles at a current density of 20 A/g. This value also improved compared to the structure without graphene layer modification (94.7%).

Advances in the Research of Photo, Electrical, and Magnetic Responsive Smart Superhydrophobic Materials: Synthesis and Potential Applications

With the rapid advancement of technology, the wettability of conventional superhydrophobic materials no longer suffice to meet the demands of practical applications. Intelligent responsive superhydrophobic materials have emerged as a highly sought-after material in various fields. The exceptional superhydrophobicity, reversible wetting, and intelligently controllable characteristics of these materials have led to extensive applications across industries, including industry, agriculture, defense, and medicine. Therefore, the development of intelligent superhydrophobic materials with superior performance, economic practicality, enhanced sensitivity, and controllability assumes utmost importance in advancing technology worldwide. This article provides a summary of the wettability principles of superhydrophobic surfaces and the mechanisms behind intelligent responsive superhydrophobicity. Furthermore, it reviews and analyzes the recent research progress on light, electric, and magnetic responsive superhydrophobic materials, encompassing aspects such as material synthesis, modification, performance, and responses under diverse external stimuli. The article also explores the challenges associated with different types of responsive superhydrophobic materials and the unique application prospects of light, electric, and magnetic responsive superhydrophobic materials. Additionally, it outlines the future directions for the development of intelligent responsive superhydrophobic materials.

Tunable optical and semiconducting properties of eco-friendly-prepared reduced graphene oxide

Wide bandgap oxidized graphenes have garnered particular interest among the materials explored for these applications because of their exceptional semiconducting and optical properties. This study aims to investigate the tunability of the related properties in reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for potential use in energy conversion, storage, and optoelectronic devices. To accomplish this, we scrutinized crucial parameters of the synthesis process such as reduction time and temperature. Our findings demonstrate that controlling these parameters makes it possible to customize the optical bandgap of reduced graphene oxide within a range of roughly 2.2 eV-1.6 eV. Additionally, we observed that reduced graphene oxide has strong and superior absorption in the visible region, which is attributable to the existence of OFGs and defects. Notably, our results indicate that the absorption coefficients of reduced graphene oxide are up to almost three times higher (7426 ml mg-1 m-1) than those observed in dispersions of exfoliated graphene and graphene oxide (GO). To complement our findings, we employed several spectroscopic and morphological characterizations, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electrical measurements. The implications of our results are significant for the development and design of future semiconductors for energy conversion and optoelectronic applications.

Temperature-Dependent Optical Properties of Oxidized Graphenes

In this study, we investigate how changing important synthesis-related parameters can affect and control the optical characteristics of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). These parameters include drying time and reduction time at two different temperatures. We obtain an understanding of their impact on optical transitions, optical bandgap, absorption coefficient, and absorbance spectrum width by analyzing these factors. Accordingly, GO has an optical bandgap of about 4 eV, which is decreased by the reduction process to 1.9 eV. Both GO and rGO display greater absorption in the visible spectrum, which improves photon capture and boosts efficiency in energy conversion applications. Additionally, our results show that GO and rGO have higher absorption coefficients than those previously reported for dispersions of exfoliated graphene. Defects in GO and rGO, as well as the presence of functional oxygen groups, are the main contributors to this increased absorption. Several measurements are carried out, including spectroscopic and morphological studies, to further support our findings.

Optical properties of graphene oxide

The study of the optical properties of graphene oxide (GO) is crucial in designing functionalized GO materials with specific optical properties for various applications such as (bio) sensors, optoelectronics, and energy storage. The present work aims to investigate the electronic transitions, optical bandgap, and absorption coefficient of GO under different conditions. Specifically, the study examines the effects of drying times ranging from 0 to 120 h while maintaining a fixed temperature of 80°C and low temperatures ranging from 40℃ to 100℃ , with a constant drying time of 24 h. Our findings indicate that exposing the GO sample to a drying time of up to 120 h at 80°C can lead to a reduction in the optical bandgap, decreasing it from 4.09 to 2.76 eV. The π - π * transition was found to be the most affected, shifting from approximately 230 nm at 0 h to 244 nm after 120 h of drying time. Absorption coefficients of 3140-5507 ml mg-1 m-1 were measured, which are similar to those reported for exfoliated graphene dispersions but up to two times higher, confirming the improved optical properties of GO. Our findings can provide insights into determining the optimal temperature and duration required for transforming GO into its reduced form for a specific application through extrapolation. The study is complemented by analyzing the elemental composition, surface morphology change, and electrical properties.

Dynamics of reduced graphene oxide: synthesis and structural models

Technological advancements are leading to an upsurge in demand for functional materials that satisfy several of humankind's needs. In addition to this, the current global drive is to develop materials with high efficacy in intended applications whilst practising green chemistry principles to ensure sustainability. Carbon-based materials, such as reduced graphene oxide (RGO), in particular, can possibly meet this criterion because they can be derived from waste biomass (a renewable material), possibly synthesised at low temperatures without the use of hazardous chemicals, and are biodegradable (owing to their organic nature), among other characteristics. Additionally, RGO as a carbon-based material is gaining momentum in several applications due to its lightweight, nontoxicity, excellent flexibility, tuneable band gap (from reduction), higher electrical conductivity (relative to graphene oxide, GO), low cost (owing to the natural abundance of carbon), and potentially facile and scalable synthesis protocols. Despite these attributes, the possible structures of RGO are still numerous with notable critical variations and the synthesis procedures have been dynamic. Herein, we summarize the highlights from the historical breakthroughs in understanding the structure of RGO (from the perspective of GO) and the recent state-of-the-art synthesis protocols, covering the period from 2020 to 2023. These are key aspects in the realisation of the full potential of RGO materials through the tailoring of physicochemical properties and reproducibility. The reviewed work highlights the merits and prospects of the physicochemical properties of RGO toward achieving sustainable, environmentally friendly, low-cost, and high-performing materials at a large scale for use in functional devices/processes to pave the way for commercialisation. This can drive the sustainability and commercial viability aspects of RGO as a material.

An Introduction to Nonlinear Integrated Photonics Devices: Nonlinear Effects and Materials

The combination of integrated optics technologies with nonlinear photonics, which has led to the growth of nonlinear integrated photonics, has also opened the way to groundbreaking new devices and applications. Here we introduce the main physical processes involved in nonlinear photonics applications, and we discuss the fundaments of this research area, starting from traditional second-order and third-order phenomena and going to ultrafast phenomena. The applications, on the other hand, have been made possible by the availability of suitable materials, with high nonlinear coefficients, and/or by the design of guided-wave structures, which can enhance the material's nonlinear properties. A summary of the most common nonlinear materials is presented, together with a discussion of the innovative ones. The discussion of fabrication processes and integration platforms is the subject of a companion article, also submitted for publication in this journal. There, several examples of nonlinear photonic integrated devices to be employed in optical communications, all-optical signal processing and computing, or quantum optics are shown, too. We aimed at offering a broad overview, even if, certainly, not exhaustive. We hope that the overall work could provide guidance for those who are newcomers to this field and some hints to the interested researchers for a more detailed investigation of the present and future development of this hot and rapidly growing field.
